and yet, when you find yourself confronted with an individual so unable to be ignored, so inherently alluring and frustratingly enigmatic that you cannot help but want to get close, that’s when you let yourself feel that burn, that’s when you surrender

julia and regulus find each other in the shadows cast by lantern glow , they search for each other between pages of old, tattered alchemy textbooks , they reach for each other like dripping wax reaches for the cool touch of the metal candle holder , the intrigue that holds them together is the stitched embroidery of stars that regulus points out to julia whenever they catch themselves spending another late night in their secret sanctuary, their shared haven, their abandoned classroom

you would think after weeks, after months of shared companionship, where the simmering connection between them keeps growing, there would be an inevitable end to the bitterness of past competition, but no . no no, regulus and julia thrive on that teetering balance of friend and foe, where the light they bring to each other is equally blinding on an intentional level — after all, they can’t let the other catch the snitch every quidditch match just because of their feelings, now, can they?

old habits die hard and it isn’t uncommon to find the pair fighting the instinct to resolve any disagreement with a duel (where their attacks will consist of blowing air in the other’s face, drenching the other with some cold water, making the other spin uncontrollably until they trip over themselves — petty , but it sends the message)

yet in the end, when all is said and done, who else can understand them if not the other?

because, you see, people are afraid of fire, but they need it

it’s that pull for warmth, for heat, for comfort, for passion, for life

verse 9:99 – "kaito saeki is the goat"

i don't think many people know about one of my bestest friends in every single one of my drs – kai saeki, otherwise known as Nine (for reasons to be explained). Allow me to introduce him...

inspired by macknshift!

originally, kai was only in my loric dr. if you're familiar with the lorien legacy series (which i doubt you are), he IS number nine. just a normal guy!... so normal............ anyways, regardless of normality, he was my favourite character in the lorien legacies series #4EVER and i thought 'why not script him in'! he makes everything 10 times more fun.

the most recognisable dr you'd find him in is my f1 dr, although he is a part of my big three – fame, marauders, AND f1.

in my F1 DR, kai is a pro surfer in the world surfing league, and was an olympic silver medalist at the tokyo 2020 games (praying for the paris 2024 gold!). we met because we were both red bull athletes, and #traumabonded over it

in my MARAUDERS DR, he's in slytherin and plays as beater for the quidditch team (he is really good at knocking people out. in a good way!!!...). he's #enemies with sirius, and unknowingly on regulus' hit list (aren't we all?)

in my FAME DR, he's a friend from uni who is currently a middle school teacher and football coach! riveting stuff

...and in my LORIC DR, he's an alien with superpowers and a penchant for violence. what's new!?

i'm not joking when i say i've been obsessed with this man since 2019...................................... it's okay! i'm so normal. anyways, over the course of those five years, i've struggled with finding a suitable fc for him (this is a recurring problem you will notice with me). in my f1 dr, his career is hugely inspired by kanoa igarashi, who is in the photos above.

the current fc i use for kai is takahiro yaguchi (below). i felt like i'd seen a glimpse of heaven when i found him [sniffle].

MORE KAI FUN FACTS!! (specifically f1 dr related)

he's japanese american, and competes under the japanese flag despite being born in chicago

he's competed under the number 9 since he started surfing professionally, which is why people call him nine as a nickname. in the WSL, he's synonymous with his number – the same number i use in f1

lived in chicago for the first few years of his life, and then moved to huntington beach for surfing

he has a brother that's 10 years older than him named tadashi

when kai saw big hero 6 in cinemas he had to get up and leave when tadashi died in the movie because he couldn't stop crying and thinking of his brother 😭 (he was 15)

he's like. 6"4. NEEEEEVER lets it go. or lets me forget. it is hard to forget with him looming over me

the two songs that remind me of him the most are BOOGIE by brockhampton and tell me by wonder girls, the latter being my ringtone for him 😏 (he hates it)

english isn’t my first language. while i am pretty fluent, excuse any grammatical or spelling errors in the future haha. anyways, MUSIC is my favorite thing. in a perfect world, i’d be a rockstar in the 70’s (which is one of the reasons i’m eternally grateful for shifting.) i listen mostly to classic rock, my favorites being zeppelin and the beatles, but i love soda stereo, bowie, am, the stones, etc. . .

my favorite season is spring or summer even though i hate the heat. i love making detailed PINTEREST boards. i love TRAVELLING so much. my goal in life is to follow a career that lets me travel and live all around the world and meet all kinds of people.

i discovered SHIFTING in 2021 (thank you, cousin), and though i've taken several long breaks over time, it's something i'll always come back to. i've minishifted once to my waiting room for like two minutes, but that was a while ago and i barely remember it. i've been part of shiftblr for a while, but i'm just now starting to post! my MAIN REALITIES are tcoptp, marauders, and film director. but i have 586 more, probably.

Hogwarts As A School

i saw someone else do this and our drs are vastly different in how hogwarts schooling is ran so i thought i’d post my version. i’ve been shifting to Hogwarts in a few different eras for years now and this is how school has always ran for me. i shift to a university style hogwarts btw, first 5 years are like undergrad, and then you can leave after 5th year if you don’t need it for your work. 6th and 7th years are the equivalent of grad school.

School Size

hogwarts is much smaller than many of you think

the castle itself is massive but the population is quite small

there’s about 280 students at Hogwarts give or take some. 10ish students per house, per year. my graduation class at hogwarts in 38 in my golden trio dr, and 45 in my marauders dr

the wizarding population of the uk is much smaller than you’d think it is

Classes

All classes are 2 times per week minus astronomy

astronomy is at midnight or later on different days for each year. Mondays are 2nd years, Tuesday is 3rd years, Wednesday is 1st years (as per the first book) Thursdays are 4th years, 5th years are Wednesdays at 1 am, 6th years are Tuesdays at 1am, 7th years are Mondays at 1am

classes start at 9am Monday through Friday and last class ends at 3pm

for your first two years, you don’t have any electives (per the books) so you have a lot more free time. out of 20 class slots (minus astronomy time) 13 are taking up for 1st years, and 12 for 2nd years, Flying being the extra class for 1st years

when your 3rd year comes, you must take at least 2 electives, but you can take up to 4 without needing a time turner like Hermiome in the 3rd book. 6 core classes plus 4 electives taking up all 20 class slots. (i am doing this in my 5th year and it’s HELL. but i want the OWLs so i suffer)

Testing

for final exams every year each class has a written test where you go over your theoretical knowledge of magic, and a practical test where you get to test the skills you’ve learned over the semester.

exams are taken twice a year in december and june with mid terms in october and march

OWLs are taken at the end of your 5th year, and then you take NEWTs at the end of your 6th year. you have to test at a certain level for each class to be able to take OWL/NEWT level classes

General Things

breakfast is from 7am to 8:30, lunch is from 12pm to 12:45, dinner is from 6 to 7:30

uniforms do not have to be worn for meals unless there is a special event

you also do not have to sit out your house table unless there is a special event

Sports/Clubs

club sign ups are always the second weekend back so around the middle of September

you can sign up for as many clubs as you like as long as you can balance them

you can also sign up for things like study groups or house study halls, Ravenclaw house study is on Wednesday after classes from 3:30 to 5:30

Quidditch try outs are always at the beginning of October, and the season starts the first weekend in November.

Canonically there’s only about 6 games of quidditch but that’s dumb so there’s quidditch most saturdays November to April with the games starting at around 10am

˗ˏˋ Winter for Florence, Regulus, and James was a season of contrast—equal parts chaotic adventure and quiet intimacy, depending on their mood and whose idea won out that day. Some Background!

Theres a lot of lore that is easier to write about when it comes up so ill keep it short. Canonly peter is white....thats not the case here. As im a poc ive changed things so that our family is poc.

Annabeth is illegitimate and hidden from society for most of her life. I grow up raised to be the perfect heir, shielding peter from the responsibility. Our father keeps his eyes off of the other two because i keep him away from them.

When we were six our mother bans our house elf from helping us with anything. I venture out to the muggle word because of that. There i meet my gang, i meet them after about two years of scavenging on the street. They dont know anything about my home life or anything personal for many years.

Ive met but was never properly introduced to sirius through pureblood events before (also how i know a few other people), james used to be in the same neighborhood as peter and i, and we did know each other for about two and a half years before he moved away.

Ive been researching stuff on animagi for six months (before first year). (My family has a big library...and i happen to be a reader.) I found out about animgaus stuff early on, just a bit before hogwarts. I researched more at hogwarts and started the process three months into hogwarts. I finish the animagus process a little over the middle of the year. Im able to shift into any animal. The animal i shift into depends on multiple factors. I find out about remus' secret and so i use my animagus secret to help him. He isnt aware, no one is besides me. Obviously until second year when the other marauders find out hes a werewolf and want to become animagi.

I meet the marauders, officially, on the train to hogwarts!

This is mostly the beginning of first year! With a bit of lore sprinkled in! I know i kinda rushed the animagus thing but I can't say i regret it one bit?

• On their anniversary night, Marlene gifts Dorcas a real rare dragon that Dorcas has no idea how she got, Marlene replies with a simple "I have my ways"

• while Dorcas checks the collar of the dragon, she notices the locket open and inside a diamond ring. when she turns around, Marlene is on one knee with arms spread open

• he tries to get her to try drugs a little but she refuses with a burning passion, after a few months go by he stops taking drugs cause he wants to be better for her

• after mary gets dumped by yet another boyfriend, she feels undesirable and goes to evan to find solace. Evan listens to her every word with a burning sensation in his chest, he comforts her up close, rubbing her back.

• they're running down the halls after pranking Severus Snape again before they see professor McGonagall walking straight down the hallway, they panic and hide in a small secluded area trying not to breath each other's air

• "well, it seems we've found each other in a tight situation" James replies with a grin making Sirius grin back "good one James" he retorts playfully

• they stay there for awhile and notice McGonagall is gone, but both seemed to like...being up close. they wouldn't tell each other that though

• extreme slow burn, Sirius isn't the one with internal homophobia. anything his parents is against, he fully supports so gay rights is his middle name. James is the one who has to deal with the conflict, he's undoubtedly sure his parents will support him but he still struggles

• I also feel like they're the same but in different fonts lol, like they'll look at a situation and think "should we?" and the other is like "definitely"

• definition of "partners in crime" except the crime is getting James to admit his feelings to Sirius but he is in EXTREME denial

• Barty growing up in a household similar to an orphanage, too many kids around and the only way he felt noticed was by being a little gremlin

• Remus who actually grew up in orphanage but did the same although soon realizes those people weren't his parents and stopped trying to get their attention or approval

• both understand each other in a deeper way

• they also have nasty sex LMAO

• they're both tall, semi strong and extremely dominant. if your dorm is across from them, and you hear screams of agony and things crashing into the walls, don't worry they're just making love <3

I love how canon-noncompliant my Marauders DR is.

Jily? Nah mate. Lily is my second best friend in the entire world, and I adore her more than anything, but her and Pandora have got some mad vibes.

Peter Pettigrew? Random ass Hufflepuff (nothing against Hufflepuffs we just don’t hang with many is all). I heard he got in an accident in third year with a mandrake root and is 80% deaf in one ear.

Wolfstar? Nah mate, Remus is mine. Sirius has no scripted partner, I’m letting him figure that bit out.

Voldemort? He picked a fight with the wrong werewolf. Yeah, his ideologies didn’t make it very far.

Regulus and Sirius’ parents? Cool new addition to the curriculum, bogarts are mandatory for first years in the first three months of school, and if the student’s biggest fear is their legal guardian, they’re removed from the home! My parents took in those two and Reggie is the sweetest boi ever, I do not care about your canon compliance my boi is soft and couldn’t hurt a soul.

Animagi being illegal? Nah, no registry necessary, no criminal charges. Would the ministry like to know? Sure, just so they can be careful, but it’s not a legal requirement. Some are even born (like me!), but if you’re not born one, it’s hard to become one.

House elves? Paid. A yearly stipend similar to that of Hogwarts professors (who also get paid well, otherwise Minerva would have quit already), anything below £50,000 is criminal and punishable by fines equal to that of whatever the house elf’s pay was docked.

David Bowie? Definitely a wizard. He’s our music teacher a few times a year, and he damn near give Rem and Siri heart attacks they were so excited (we were in 2nd year).

Barty, Evan, and Reg being questionable? Nah. I mean yes, but in a fun way. Otherwise, they’d be boring. Also Reg is a cat, both personality wise and animagus wise.

　　　　　𖣠 we met in divination class, first year. i was very reserved and pandora was just happy to have a partner who actually would do their work. over time, i slowly opened up to her and she introduced me to her friends. i would often sneak into her dorm room to finish our homework and then we'd just talk for hours. it turned romantic at the end of our first year, when she confessed to be about two days before we were set to leave for summer vacation. it was one of the few times i'd ever seen her nervous about something. i, of course, felt the same and that's where our relationship stared.

'Marlene is My Queen'

I am writing a chunky marauders band au next year; this is just some drabble that may or may not be used. I will continue to tease marauders band from now until it is published so please drop me a follow to see more! <3 words: 700, rs: platonic/romantic blackinnon, can be read either way but i had romantic in mind (i'm from the old fandom where they're both bi in my eyes - remember that this fandom is built on headcannons so everyone has different opinions and i love romantic blackinnon.) anyways rant over - enjoy my little drabble and it will be posted on ao3 too (un: hattiecursed_sigh)

Vibrations from the full-volume speakers buzzed through the stage and over the crowd like a wave of continuous sound, firing a constant stream of adrenaline and energy and the true sense of being alive into the minds and bodies of each and every single person within the audience and up on the stage. Blinding colourful lights jumped from shade to shade and on and off with the beat, reflecting from the sheen of the drums, the metal of the guitar and bass, and the handle of the microphone, highlighting each member of the band for the audience’s eyes to filter between. The singer leaped into the air on the spot three times, stomping her heavy Dr Marten black leather boots on the segment of carpet on the stage that covered the countless wires, stomp, stomp, stomp along with the heavy undertone of the bass and the enraged bang on the drum. Once securely landed back on her feet, she ran her free hand through her medium-length platinum blonde hair, throwing it back over her head and letting the now bright yellow strobes cast rays of sunlight onto her face, which was beading with sweat. Her face had an awe-stricken appearance as she paused her vocals; taking in the harmonious atmosphere of the audience who were previously screaming her lyrics back at her and jumping alongside her as well as the continued melodic chaos of the rest of the band who were still focussing on perfecting the first live showing of their newest single. As the final bridge of the song approached, she took a swift look over at each of her bandmates, casting them each a meaningful glance, but the only one who locked eyes with her was the bassist who had lost his shirt earlier on in the show and who’s sweat was free flowing down his tattooed abdomen, and who stared at her with stars reflecting in his grey-blue shimmering eyes. Picking back up with her vocals, which were much softer to match the fading-out music compared to the previous verses in the upbeat rock song, she softly belted the emotional lyrics which held so much meaning to her and brought salty tears to her green eyes. Walking over to the bassist, still singing and still holding eye-contact, she made her way behind him; he leaned backwards and rested his head over her shoulder, still playing perfectly but making her voice hitch slightly – though it was unclear if that was because of his touch or because she was now baring her tears on stage in front of millions of people. Her heart thumped against its cage, and she was cautious of it getting picked up on the microphone as she gave it her all for the final word of the second to last song of the setlist. The crowd erupted into cheers as Marlene dropped her hand by her side and wrapped her other arm around Sirius’s neck, wiping her tears and the little mascara she had left onto his bare skin, it ending up smudged over his Nordic tattoos and over the tattoo of their band name. Sirius propped his bass up against the speaker before turning around, and faster than she knew it, she was hoisted up into the air and onto his shoulders – which she didn’t know he was strong enough to do, especially after a two-hour show. Her thighs rested at either side of his head as she failed to supress a giggle as he held her in place and took the microphone from her hand. His voice rang through the speakers and the crowd screamed again while the other band members looked on, confused by what he was about to say yet not appearing surprised at his antics whatsoever. As the audience cheers subsided by the bassist’s voice chorusing through the environment, she sucked up her emotional tears and smiled proudly as she stood tall above everything and everyone else; it was difficult to contain one’s ego when floating so high up above the world. Sirius cleared his throat before continuing and threw a classic wolfish smirk into the crowd and yelled into the microphone: “Marlene is my Queen!” And the crowd went wild.

Speaking of James, what do you think of him in the prequel + Lily’s letter? She mentioned him not having the chance to go on excursions without the cloak, despite them being in hiding.

I've been thinking about this question and funnily enough it came up in another post where I had a fun back and forth with @seriousbrat! I should probably preface my answer by saying that I haven't put that much thought into James or Lily in general, and I don't really spend time in the parts of the fandom that discuss them at length, so my thoughts are based on a cursory revisiting of the text. Some of what I say may be basic stuff for the Jily/Marauders/¯\_(ツ)_/¯ parts of the fandom, some of it may be stuff that has already been counter argued with points I haven't thought of, etc. This isn't my area of interest, but your question is interesting! Tl;dr proceed with caution I guess lol.

The first thing that comes to mind about the letter from Lily to Sirius is why she wrote it in the first place. My own reading of it is that it's meant to be exposition more than something that has to do with a thought out relationship between these characters. Like many others, I'm frustrated with the minimal and flat way Lily is written. We get very few insights into who she was, most of them through descriptions from other characters like Slughorn. To me it's clear that Rowling held back on her for the sake of the big reveal at the end of DH, and I think a lot of Lily's character development got thrown under the bus as a result. But it could also just be that Lily is writing a thank you to Sirius for Harry's birthday present and it was the only time she ever sent him anything, but in the process she's giving him an update since they know each other as well as anyone knows their spouse's best friend.

In her letter she writes:

James is getting a bit frustrated shut up here, he tries not to show it but I can tell - also, Dumbledore’s still got his Invisibility Cloak, so no chance of little excursions. If you could visit, it would cheer him up so much.

Lily is showing a lot of sympathy for James here, while also acknowledging that if he had his Invisibility Cloak he would probably be sneaking out under it. I know that this implication is contentious across fandoms, and my own thoughts on it are: it falls within James' character to do something like that and be reckless, but while I think it's irresponsible and shitty, I also don't think he's satan incarnate for it, by any means. To me it - and how young James tends to be written - shows that he's an immature guy in a war where he spends most of his time shut up in a comfortable house instead of fighting (ie. his ideals aren't tested or challenged by trauma), and the first chance he gets to do something brave he forgets his wand on the couch and is immediately killed. I think James had very good intentions but kind of bad follow through.

In her letter, Lily is also asking Sirius to come visit to cheer James up, which I find strange, given the two men are such close friends. Why should Lily have to ask Sirius to visit? Are he and James not in touch? Or is Lily being thoughtful and identifying James needs and trying to meet them when he hasn't done so himself? Again, I think this letter is more about exposition, so I don't think there's any significant meaning here, just that the author was a bit careless. Lily then goes on to say:

Wormy was here last weekend, I thought he seemed down, but that was probably the news about the McKinnons; I cried all evening when I heard.

For me there's a conspicuous absence of any note referring to what a comfort James was. I talked about this in my other ask, but I think a lot of James, and as an extension his relationship with Lily, is the author's projection of her own experience in an abusive relationship and what she wishes it had been. That isn't to say I think James abused Lily, but rather that Rowling transferred some of her abusive husband's qualities onto James, while also projecting a fantasy of what she wished he had been onto the character too, ie. a devoted, loving father onto him who would - and did - die for his family. A lot of James' actions, mannerisms, and words - his arrogance, dismissiveness, and enjoyment of cruelty towards select people he has dehumanized - raises my own red flags as an abuse survivor. While I think he was a bully at school - and bullying is a form of abuse - I don't think he was abusive to his wife or child. I could draw a parallel with the phenomenon of the prison guard who enacts cruelty on his charges freely and then goes home and is a loving, doting husband and father who wouldn't hurt a fly, because he only abuses those he dehumanizes. Instead, though, what I think is going on is that Rowling is projecting a lot of her first husband onto James, and unconsciously and unintentionally leaving a trail of abuser red flags written into his character.

It hits hard for me that Lily is concerned enough about James, and empathetic enough of him, that she shares her worry about his frustration and cabin fever with his best friend, and asks him to come visit, because she wants to cheer James up - yet she makes no mention of James being a comfort to her when she spends all night crying about her friend being murdered. In short, Lily is identifying and attending to James' needs but we see no indication that this is reciprocated. It doesn't feel out of line for an abuse victim to describe a relationship like this, especially since it would be so simple to have added something like, "as difficult as it is being shut up in this cottage, it was a great comfort to have James that night."

It's odd to me that someone thoughtful enough to attend to their spouse's emotional needs would forgo expression appreciation for them doing the same, so my reading of this is that James doesn't provide Lily with the same kind of comfort. More importantly, it doesn't seem to be on Rowling's radar to mention how James reacted to his wife outright crying for a whole evening, which tracks with how a lot of abuse victims understand relationships, ie. it often doesn't occur to them that they should be reciprocal. And so, Rowling forgets to add in the bit where James offers Lily comfort, perhaps because it was something she lacked experience of and therefore didn't think to write. And while I feel the need to include the requisite statement of "fuck JKR and her transphobic, bigoted views" I also feel that despite that, I won't sink to her level and dehumanize others, and therefore feel it's still important to balance that view with sympathy for her experiences as an abuse victim.

As for the prequel, the implication seems to be that two muggle cops got in the middle of James and Sirius escaping from some Death Eaters. It's a fun little piece but also reveals that Rowling really benefits from having an editor, because the prose is overwrought and a bit clumsy. In terms of what it says about James' and Sirius' character, they don't seem at all concerned with violating the Statute of Secrecy in front of muggles, or with protecting those muggles from the three wizards who are presumably Death Eaters. James and Sirius were described by Rowling as "bad boys" and she talked about how this was something sexy that all women loved in men (which I find problematic for a number of reasons), however she doesn't seem to differentiate between youthful rebelliousness and selfish destructiveness. It's something Lupin talks about in PoA when he reflects on their youthful adventures. In any case, James and Sirius weren't rebellious - not in their bullying at school, not in their animagi nights, and not in the prequel. They weren't challenging an unfair authority or status quo, but instead were pursuing their own fun for fun's sake, and other people often get hurt, or come dangerously close to it.

In the prequel they leave the cops vulnerable and without defense with the three DEs who are knocked out and might be back on their feet any minute. Given that Death Eaters torture muggles for sport in canon, this seems like a careless and callous move. I also feel like the Phoenix shirts are a bit cheesy... Dumbledore would never? Is the idea that James and Sirius made the shirts themselves? Or is this just another clumsy literary device that exists for the sake of exposition but doesn't fit the characters all that well? I feel like if the Order did have some kind of gear with their emblem on it, it would be more subtle and also a bit more refined than a t-shirt. The idea of these besties wearing matching shirts is cute, it just feels out of character.

I'm not sure if this was the parallel you meant to draw or were asking about, but as to whether the prequel story takes place while James and Lily are in hiding, I don't think it does. James and Sirius are described as looking like they're in their "late teens" and this seems to be a pretty clear indication from the author that this is the age they're at. James and Lily are killed when they're 21, and they'd been in hiding for about a year according to @said-snape-softly's calcutations in this amazing post (though I need to adjust the timeline a bit because @saintsenara had some great thoughts too in this other post). So even if it was just a year or six months in between, I think the prequel story is set before James and Lily go into hiding.
