One of Lovecraft's minor short stories of the so-called Dreamland series was titled, THE WHITE SHIP. in style it was highly reminiscent of the works of Lord Dunsany. Dunsany along with Poe was unquestionably the most powerful influence on Lovecraft's literary achievements. Though Dunsany's dreamy and archaic style was seen more infrequently as Lovecraft's style matured his protagonists at times would drift into Dunsanian verbage when quoting from ancient and forbidden tomes like the Necronomicon, etc. One of the elements mentioned in THE WHITE SHIP was "the celestial bird" also referenced several times as "the bird of heaven". This large and hovering bird glides above The White Ship leading it on to ever more more glorious and mysterious cities and regions of "the land of Dreams". Unfortunately by the climax of the tale "The White Ship" and the "bird of heaven" come to ruin. The protagonist of the story, a lighthouse keeper in the "real world" wakes to find the blue feathered bird of his dreams dead on the rocks at the base of his lighthouse. Added to this he sees a broken, pure white spar of a wrecked ship washing in the waves and rocks. After this the lighthouse keeper is never able to travel to the bejeweled regions of Dreamland ever again. Lovecraft discribed the bird of his story as having blue plumage not unlike the colour of the sky. Though the exact species of the bird is not identified (if its type even exists in the real world?) we might imagine that the Great Blue Heron might have been an inspiration for its appearance. The photo below was taken by your curator at Lake Elkhorn, Columbia, MD. (Exhibit 526)

Norman era bishops seemed to really love talking about sodomites and the feminisation of men. And here we are almost 1000 years later.

H. P. Lovecraft short stories "The White Ship" and "Beyond the Wall of Sleep" read by D. E. Wittkower (Wittkower's Librivox readings catalog); Wittkower's reading voice is great for these : D

unlike many people, i think that scene is so beautiful and meaningful. i wanna talk about this scene from vi’s perspective, and more specifically about touch and her past with physical violence.
all she's ever known is pain, violence and physical abuse. it's how she copes and what she'd had to live with her whole life: since she was a child, to protect powder and the others, being in prison for 7 years and getting beat up, using her fists in every fight, getting punched by cait, then jinx (literally in the scene before this one) becoming a pit fighter and using all she knows to cope with any emotion she has
Tumblr media
Vi needed, deserved that closeness, that intimacy, a touch that isnt a violent one, a form of trust and warmth that she has never gotten, especially after everything physically abusive that she went through until now, she's finally allowed and able to feel loved and cared for.

and cait didn't apologize for hurting vi the way that she did, but i believe that scene was a step towards forgiveness and redemption. it's about second chances and saving their relationship from the curse it was in, the oil and water curse.

September Reads
Seven books finished this month and, since I am one of those people who prefers to have many books on on the go at all times to I can pick and choose according to mood and brain power, significant headway made with another six. This is the first month since March that I’ve finished more non-fiction than fiction (and I’m not entirely sure that counts since I only finished three books in total) and…
