hello highly self indulgent ask but which of your ocs do you think would get along the best with my man onyx :D
among the ones that Onyx would like there's the King of Stories. My man would be classified as a DILF. He would probably feel mildly positive towards Onyx.
Conversely his daughter, The Young Witch would dislike Onyx. But it's in the way that a young kid would dislike their parent's new partner, especially if that child is an orphan and is worried about being replaced. She's like 7 though give her a break.
The Singing Soldier likes almost anyone it meets.
The Victorian Biologist would be happy to have someone to info dump on. Though once she starts Onyx would not be able to stop her.
The Feral Flower would fight them either way. Unclear if this means she is positive or negative to a person. She has gotten better at not attacking people on sight as she gets more experienced.
Fox mask would be the only one of the Masked Jesters to have a positive relationship with Onyx as opposed to neutral, especially if she can get him to try outfits on.
The Ghost, Shifting Baker, Chaotic One, Burned Detective, Captain, Traveling Librarian and Truth's Artist are all neutral to mildly positive to Onyx

Last year many kind people donated in Gumby’s memory to Zoos Victoria’s Amphibian Bushfire Recovery Centre. This week they have a fantastic update to share about one of the frogs that Gumby’s donation has been supporting!
70 Critically Endangered Spotted Tree Frogs have been released into the wild at Mt. Beauty in Victoria! They were bred at Melbourne Zoo's Amphibian Bushfire Recovery Centre and Healesville Sanctuary's Threatened Amphibian Biolab

Queer people in the middle ages
Tumblr media
So, the whiny manchildren, who want the middle ages to conform to their white supremacist fantasy, also keep claiming that there were no queer people in the middle ages - or that in fact queer folks just miraculously materialized at some point in the 1970s. But let me talk about one thing: How do we know that there were queer people in the middle ages? And how do we know that actually apparently at least some queer people in the European middle ages were living fairly openly?
Now, the very obvious answer to the first question is, that we do know that biologically queerness is simply a part of human nature. We know that just some people will be queer. How many people are queer... Well, biologist and psycholigists will argue with no end about this. Because of course we cannot look at someone and say "Oh, definitely a queer person", so we can only base our assumptions on what people say when asked. And we absolutely do know that how many people will admit to being queer the less afraid they are of societal consequences. Of course, biologically we can look at some apes and will see that their group behaviors work centrally over exchanging sexual favors with basically most apes being bi... But yeah, currently we can only guess. Maybe 10% of all humans are queer in some way or form - maybe it is more like 50%, maybe even more. We don't really know.
But what about the middle ages?
See, here I gotta say that I at times am annoyed with the way a lot of queer folks interact with history by just speculating about the queerness of some well known historical figures. Don't get me wrong, quite a few of them might have been queer. But this also falls into a very typical falacy.
Basically, when we talk about history we have the bad habbit of talking mainly about a few well known historical figures. When it comes to the middle ages, this narrative tends to focus mostly on clergy and nobility. This is partly because we have the best historical record of them - but also because to this day we tend to overvalue the lives of people who have influence.
And the other falacy is, that we just assume that the Victorian ideals about sex were true in the middle ages and that henceforth people were not able to be open about it.
Because here is the thing. We actually do have records of people being fairly open about it. This is partly records we have from lower nobility and especially gentry, but at times also from the peasants and normal folks that history often tends to ignore.
See, when I look at the historical record I could not care less about the richer nobility and royalty. Because their lives could not be further removed from normal society at the time. And especially I do not really care about the politics in terms of wars and aliances and such. Because it tells us fairly little about what LIFE at the time actually looked like.
No, the stuff I find interesting is the letters send by normal people - and stuff like grafitti. Maybe diaries, we still have access too. Or one interesting source I found for the middle ages: A collection of jokes a French monk wrote down over the course of years.
Because this is the kind of source that reflects the life of normal folks a lot better than whatever political drama some duke or king or bishop was involved in.
And in those sources you will find... that people are actually fairly open in talking about queerness. Heck, we even have sources in this regard that talk about specific sexual acts. Going so far that through this we have at least some vague ideas about kink at the time (though that really is a topic on which the historical record is super light).
In fact we have sources of this sort going back to the ancient times, even. Which is also why we know that the Romans in general were a lot more put off by queerness than people in the early and high medieval times. (Mind you, this did not stop the Romans from having gay sex, they were just a lot more scandalized by it!)
Of course, this is nothing that people are taught in school. Heck, you can manage to study history and still be ignorant of this, because this is not the type of sources a lot of history is concerned with or was concerned with for the longest time. Recently this is shifting a bit - but shifts tend to be slow.
So, yes, we know that queerness was definitely something that existed in the middle ages. Yes, the time was still very heteronormative - but it was clearly also less scandalous about queerness than either the Romans or the folks in the Rennaissance.

A bit about me!
🍄🏛🌲🏛️🏔️🏛️🌲🔮🌲🏛️🏔️🏛️🌲🏛️🍄
I’m Isaac, I’m a baby polytheist born and raised Christian in the PNW! I’m pretty scarred from Christianity and the ablism I suffered in my upbringing as a result of autism and ADD, and the “special” schooling I received as a “treatment” for it. I am cautiously re-exploring spirituality, inspired by my 75 year old neighbor who is a witch! I’m starting my journey with Hellenism, Celtic Paganism, and Norse paganism and they have always been a fascination to me. I’m deeply connected to the earth and nature and always have been, and would love to become more spiritually in twinned with it.
🌲🏛️🌲🏛️🌲🏛️🌲🏛️🌲🏛️🌲🏛️🌲🏛️🌲
A GUIDE TO MY POST COLLECTIONS: (find tag in bottom of such posts to find collection)
#agodtoconsider = secondary deities and a basic breakdown of their known lore, and family trees, as well as relevant stories to them and their role in the epics, and other general information to familiarize yourself with them, and maybe even consider worshiping them!
#Isee = 5 ways I may interact with or notice the presence and influence of a specific deity in my day to day life as a hellenist.
#Symbolismof = a comprehensive guide of the mythological and historical symbology associated with a specific god. This includes things such as sacred animals and food, commonly associated herbs, crystals, and flowers, as well as the explanations for why they fit this gods symbology.
#subtlewaystohonor = a collective list or guide on various ways in which you can worship or honor a given deity in subtle or non complicated ways on a day to day basis, without necessarily having to devote too much to it, whilst also effectively honoring them.
#Analtarto = a comprehensive guide on how to set up and decorate an altar or shrine space dedicated to a given deity. This includes going into the symbolism and attributes associated with that god and how it can manifest in an altar, as well on tips for how to use said altar when you have completed it!
#Aprayerto = an idea for a prayer or hymn to any given god.
#Eoffering = an aesthetic board E-offering collage I made that I’ve dedicated to a specific god.

lafontaine from the carmilla webseries was truly one of the most characters of all time. they're a mad scientist biologist. they're a good friend. they're simultaneously the most unhinged and the most chill member of their group. they got mind controlled by an ancient fish god. they did necromancy without telling anyone. they tried to kill god with a diy gun full of nanobots. they dissect things as a coping mechanism. their love interests include a victorian ghost-cyborg-vampire-zombie and a repressed normie. they're even nonbinary.

Some Halloween-related headcanons since it is 🎃🦇🕯️ the season! 🕯️🦇🎃 These apply to my arts & music verse and to my marine biologist verse.
Autumn is Itachi's favorite season and Halloween is his favorite holiday/celebration of the year. In general, he is a big fan of psychological horror books and video games.
When they were younger, he would always take Sasuke to go trick-or-treat around the neighborhood. Any of Sasuke's friends that wanted to go along as well would always be welcome.
Nowadays, even though he doesn't really participate directly anymore, he always has some nice treats waiting for anybody that might visit. Which include handmade cookies, cupcakes, and other thematic little things.
Pumpkin carving isn't really something he's fond of doing himself, mostly because of the potential to make a mess. However, if any of his friends/family are into it, he will cheer them on.
Usually he doesn't put much effort into Halloween decorations, depending on how much free time he has for it or if he is even home at the time (which is a thing in both these verses, for different reasons). But, again, if he lives with somebody who's into it, he will definitely want to help decorating.
As far as decorations go, the favorite is (unsurprisingly) crows. Something else he loves is thematic candles and lights, and merch related to his favorite books and games.
If he dresses up, he will actually make his own costume. In the arts & music verse, he will design it from scratch and, in the marine biologist verse, he will put together something with whatever he has in his dresser at the time.
Regarding costumes, he doesn't necessarily have a favorite but he is quite fond of Victorian and Gothic aesthetics. And, again, characters from his favorite franchises.
This one is more of a fun fact but, in the arts & music verse, he can play the organ so if you ever need someone to provide spooky music for your Halloween party you know who to call.
Another fun fact: Itachi is that person who will point at a decor skeleton and judge it if any of the bones are missing and/or misplaced.
One final fun fact: depending on the thread, Itachi has a female black cat named Lunafreya.

hi!! big fan of your blog. you really changed my succession viewing experience and i can't wait to rewatch after reading the recs you've put up!
that being said, i read megan garber's piece in the atlantic about the animal imagery/darwinian implications in the show and really loved it (as a biologist with an interest in sociology lol). do you have any specific reading material relating to the topics in that piece? i'd just love to read more but not super sure what i'm even asking/looking for, so feel free to ignore!
hi! so, there's quite a large body of literature in history of biology that deals with the politics of evolutionary theory, including darwinism. you can read these in any order, though i would recommend starting with bob young's 'malthus and the evolutionists: the common context of biological and social theory' if you haven't already encountered it. this was a signal essay in historically grounding the argument that darwinian evolutionary theory read victorian industrial capitalism and malthusian population anxiety into the natural world, which was why it appealed to victorian men of science in a way that previous theories of evolution (sometimes referred to as species transformation or transmutationism, or transformisme / transformismo in france / italy) hadn't. bob was a marxist historian at a time when history of biology had been largely written by working scientists and naive positivists, and his methodological influence continues to be felt in the field today. anyway, these are only starting points and are centred on france and britain, and also i excluded p*ter b*wler because i hate his ass:
the politics of evolution: morphology, medicine, and reform in radical london, by adrian desmond
utopia's garden: french natural history from old regime to revolution, by emma spary
the age of lamarck: evolutionary theories in france, 1790–1830, by pietro corsi
l'introduction du darwinisme en france au xixe siècle, by yvette conry (<- i can't remember whether this was translated into english, sorry)
faces of degeneration: a european disorder, 1848–1918, by daniel pick
darwin: the life of a tormented evolutionist, by adrian desmond and james moore
the cuvier-geoffroy debate: french biology in the decades before darwin, by toby appel
evolution before darwin: theories of the transmutation of species in edinburgh, 1804–1834, by bill jenkins
the spirit of system: lamarck and evolutionary biology, by richard burkhardt
the meaning of evolution: the morphological construction and ideological reconstruction of darwin's theory, by robert j richards
the great nation in decline: sex, modernity, and health crises in revolutionary france, c. 1750–1850, by sean quinlan
lamarck, the mythical precursor: a study of the relations between science and ideology, by madeleine barthélemy-madaule
victorian sensation: the extraordinary publication, reception, and secret authorship of vestiges of the natural history of creation, by james secord

Blown off course and washed away, wildlife hit by hurricanes (Washington Post)
Excerpt from this Washington Post story:
Hurricanes Helene and Milton blew long-winged sooty terns and high-flying frigatebirds hundreds of miles away from their ocean comfort zones into Indiana, Kentucky and other inland states.
Helene interrupted the migration of more than 100 million birds crossing over Alabama, and triggered floods that swept thousands of North Carolina’s 30-inch-long hellbender salamanders to their deaths.
And it is very likely that some of Florida’s beloved manatees have been stranded or trapped by the hurricanes and their aftermath.
It has been a wild ride for the wildlife in hurricane country.
As swaths of the southern United States recover from the aftermath of two hurricanes that left millions without power and killed hundreds of people, ecologists and biologists are working to understand the impact the devastating storms have had on wildlife.
A few animals have capitalized on the destruction. North Carolina’s black bears have been nosing through the open doors of shattered structures in search of groceries now suddenly available. Far more animals have been displaced or killed.
Falyn Owens, a North Carolina extension biologist, said that “the biggest impact from Hurricane [Helene] that we know of so far has been species that have been basically swept out of their natural habitat either by the water, for aquatic species, or by the air itself, especially for migratory birds.”
Just how great a toll the hurricanes took on birds migrating south to spend the winter months in the Caribbean, Mexico and South America is not yet known. The first and possibly strongest indication may be feathers washing up on beaches along the Gulf Coast.
Farnsworth estimates that 150 to 275 species were in the midst of migration during the hurricanes, including magnolia warblers, American redstarts, green herons, Baltimore orioles and Swainson’s thrushes.
In a pinch, many do the bird equivalent of pulling over at a Motel 6: They find a small hole in a tree or the convenient eaves of a three-bedroom Victorian and ride out the storm.
“A lot of birds do die,” Farnsworth said. “They get exhausted and fall or get pushed into the water. These small songbirds can occasionally land on the surface of the ocean, but when there’s a hurricane they do not do well.”

eel smut eel smut eel smut!! uwu
I will write it!!! I just need to think of a delicious premise. >:D the twins are a package deal, so you get two scary eels for the price of one.
So far these are a few ideas I’ve had for tweel thought 1:
✧ victorian era in which you (riddle’s wife) purchase jade and floyd from an underground auction in hopes that riddle (a renowned biologist) will be able to study them to his heart’s content. but riddle disapproves of both eels and so they’re left to exist in the quiet gloom of their enclosure. you decide to study them for riddle’s sake, but by spending more and more time with them, bonding and learning, the eels begin to obsess over the one who rescued them from a midnight auction.
✧ omegaverse where you (an omega) are in debt to the leech family and in order to repay them and keep debt collectors away you offer to help mr. leech’s sons with their monthly ruts. the relationship soon spirals out of control when both fall in love with you.
✧ an alternate side to azul thought 4 where you don’t break the contract terms and therefore the two months come to an end peacefully. but after hearing about how much fun you and azul had, the twins want their chance to enjoy good times with you. now you’ve begun fwb with them and this time they’re determined to keep you all to themselves. azul plays dirty, but the twins play dirtier.

Send '🤝' for a pro and a con to befriending my muse!
Pro:
Depending on when they meet, Shikoba would be thrilled to hear Jotaro is a marine biologist. She is always happy to meet a fellow animal lover, and since she has always wanted to be a wildlife ecologist, she will ask a lot of questions. Like "What's it like doin' all that research an' workin' wit' animals," "Have you done any big conservation projects yet?", "Have ya ever petted a shark??" And just want to learn about his work and what led him to it, which could open up his huge story about destroying a Victorian vampire and travelling the world. Her mind would be blown!
Con:
But she could also be super reserved and fearful about asking him all those questions. She can be pretty perceptive, but to her own detriment. She could assume that his cool demeanor means she's annoying and needs to get herself out of his way. Shikoba tends to view others' silence as a reflection of her flaws/unlikeability.

Okay which AU should I make first? I will get To them all eventually, but I want to know which ones you guys are interested in the most. (some of these Jokes some of these are serious)
I don’t Blame you guys if you don’t read all of this
A. An AU based on H2O Just add water (if people don’t know this one I would be shocked, also yes this a joke one)
b. An AU based on Wolfblood: Basically people born with the ability to turn into wolves if you want the simplified version, kylo would be the wolf. Hux would be (shh secret lore stuff)
c. An AU based on Alien Surfer Girls: Kylo is an alien that has come to earth for some reason. The shows reason was surfing but I might change that bc why 😭 (this is another Joke one)
D. An AU based on Thunder Stone: A meteor destroyed life on earth so now the survivors live underground in a high tech society, and then one of them will discover time travel and go to the future where everything’s a desert and there’s like nomad rebel people that get captured by the dictator people and forced to work the mines and stuff, and also all the animals are just dead (i haven’t decided who is the traveler and who is from the future, also fun fact the show was made in the 90s but set in 2020, the meteor supposedly hit in 2003)
E. An AU based on Girl From Tomorow: Ben is from a post apocalyptic Utopian Future where everything is peaceful and they have these devices that allow to use what is basically the force. And Hux is from the past just before the apocalypse took place in a war torn world run by a dictatorship. Ben accidentally travels back to that time and has to figure out what to do because the apocalypse is getting closer and closer. he probably gets arrested by Hux or some thing.
F: an AU based Ocean girl: (I haven’t decided if they will be adults in this one or if it will be BenArmie) Kylo is living and working in an underwater, marine research facility as a marine biologist, and he comes across an island where he meets Hux an alien prince, who crash landed there when he was a child and Can like swim really well and talk to Whales
G. An AU based on Sparticle Mystery: A BenArmie story where all of the adults have been teleported into another dimension, leaving the children to fend for themselves (a lot of them end up creating dictatorships) anyway while traveling around Ben stumbles into a military school (that is one of those dictatorships) where he meets Armie. (I wish people would get the reference for this because the character I based Hux on is like so funny, also that character does have a romantic relationship in the show and has a child by the end of it 😂) in season two of the show, the kids parents get returned as teenagers. I don’t know if I will do that, but it would be pretty funny 😭 (this is like a semi joke one)
H. An AU based elephant princess: basically, Kylo finds out that he’s from a different dimension and is actually heir to the throne of that dimension, and has a whole bunch of magic powers. And he stuck between going off and living as a prince or continuing to be in his rock band, and also he’s distracted by the guy he has a crush on at school who just joined the band (this is a joke one, he’s literally going to be adopted by snoke. Also fun fact, young Liam Hemsworth is in this show.)
I. An AU based on spellbinder in the land of the dragon lord: this one is going to be more loosely based they just have a dimension traveling boat, and I just wanted to mess around with that. Like I remember, there was one of the universes where, like all of the adults could not have children, so they made children out of robots and then captured the characters because they realized that they could have children and we’re like “make us children!” Also all dressed like they were part of Victorian France, It’s a really weird show.
J. just a parody of Doctor Who but with Kylux.
(I wanted to do one based on house of Anubis but unfortunately, I don’t remember enough of the lore and I can no longer stream the show for free :( . If I somehow, miraculously, remember, I will update this.)
feel free to tell me why you’re interested in the ones you’re interested in, or list your level of interest for each one in the replies or tags, infact I encourage you to do this
