hello highly self indulgent ask but which of your ocs do you think would get along the best with my man onyx :D
among the ones that Onyx would like there's the King of Stories. My man would be classified as a DILF. He would probably feel mildly positive towards Onyx.
Conversely his daughter, The Young Witch would dislike Onyx. But it's in the way that a young kid would dislike their parent's new partner, especially if that child is an orphan and is worried about being replaced. She's like 7 though give her a break.
The Singing Soldier likes almost anyone it meets.
The Victorian Biologist would be happy to have someone to info dump on. Though once she starts Onyx would not be able to stop her.
The Feral Flower would fight them either way. Unclear if this means she is positive or negative to a person. She has gotten better at not attacking people on sight as she gets more experienced.
Fox mask would be the only one of the Masked Jesters to have a positive relationship with Onyx as opposed to neutral, especially if she can get him to try outfits on.
The Ghost, Shifting Baker, Chaotic One, Burned Detective, Captain, Traveling Librarian and Truth's Artist are all neutral to mildly positive to Onyx

"In short:
Victorian farmers and volunteers have planted 750,000 trees to restore habitat for a critically endangered bird.
The Regent Honeyeater Project has brought together volunteers from all walks of life since it was launched in the 1990s.
What's next?
An ornithologist says the project is working wonders for the species and other wildlife.
--
John Paul Murphy is not an ecologist, but he knows a thing or two about trees.
The young cattle farmer from Winton in north-east Victoria has helped plant more than 750,000 trees as part of the Regent Honeyeater Project.
"Our involvement as a family goes back to the early 1990s, when the project first kicked off," Mr Murphy said.
The regent honeyeater is a critically endangered bird known for its black-and-bright-yellow colouring.
"Back in the day, millions of these birds would darken the sky from Adelaide up to Queensland," ornithologist Maggie Watson said.
"They're quite large compared to other honeyeaters, are highly nectar-dependent, and are one of the main pollinators of eucalypt trees."
Dr Watson, based in Burrumbuttock, New South Wales, said habitat fragmentation was a major reason the bird was threatened.
"When people started clearing farmland as part of colonisation in the 1800s, they removed all the productive, nectar-producing trees," she said.
"So that essentially wiped out the regent honeyeater's main food-base."
'Great for all wildlife'
Benalla cattle farmer and Regent Honeyeater Project president Rob Richardson said agriculture had claimed its share of the environment.
"We've destroyed a lot of habitat to create grazing and cropping land to the point where there are less than 500 wild regent honeyeaters left in Australia," he said.
"So now we're trying to restore the balance.
"We propagate all the trees in our plant nursery, and then plant them across the landscape to establish vegetation corridors."
Dr Watson said the project would significantly benefit the regent honeyeater population.
"The birds need to have 'roads' to get to flowering trees like eucalypts, and those roads happen to be other trees — so the more you plant, the better," she said.
"Tackling habitat fragmentation is great for all wildlife."
Huge volunteer effort
Mr Richardson said local volunteers were at the heart of the project.
"Over the last 30 years we've had many farmers donate land to be revegetated and over 40,000 volunteers help plant all the trees," he said.
Mr Murphy said the volunteers came from all walks of life.
"At our planting days, I've met university students, doctors, lawyers, biologists … and many of them come back year after year," he said.
Mr Murphy said it was nice to have a chance to get to know with people he may not otherwise have met.
"Farming can be pretty isolating," he said.
"But when you're planting, learning, and just getting your hands dirty together, the conversations you have are really unique.""

Mermaid AU where Viktor is a merman who lives in polluted waters. Jayce is a marine biologist.
I can see this AU going multiple ways ⬇️
The cute AU:
Modern setting where Jayce wants to bring awareness to climate change, but very much fails to reverse the negative effects of the pollution so he offers childhood friend (and fulltime merman) Viktor to recover in the pool in his back yard. They’ve never been this close before. While taking care of Viktor (getting him food, medical treatments, etc) they slowly fall in love. It’s wholesome, fluffy, cute. Everything sweet and nice.
When Viktor recovers they move to a location with cleaner water and live happily ever after.
The tragic AU:
Victorian setting where most of the pollution is caused by a huge factory. Jayce is married to Mel (homophobia is a thing in this AU and Jayce has internalised plenty, doesn’t even realize he likes men too). Viktor lives in a lake (or river I guess) and they meet when Jayce almost drowns and Viktor saves his life. Viktor’s mermaid tribe (Zaunites) don’t discriminate and homophobia is a foreign concept to Viktor.
After Jayce’s near drowning experience he becomes very afraid of water, but his infatuation with Viktor is strong enough to keep getting close to it. Through his interactions with Viktor he’s able to overcome some of his fears and his growing trust allows him to even get into the water sometimes. They have long and deep conversations and eventually develop a deep bond.
Jayce fails at trying to convince the factory to stop polluting the waters. Profit is prioritized. The fight is too exhausting for Viktor, he tells Jayce’s he would rather accept his ever worsening illness and die. Jayce begs him not to give up, which eventually leads Viktor to seek out a sea mage (Singed lol) from which he gets a potion that will allow him to grow a pair of legs.
When Jayce sees Viktor’s new (naked psps) body for the first time he’s thrilled. He immediately urges him to live with him and Mel (who’s a kind hospitable woman).
Learning how to walk isn’t easy. It takes months before Viktor’s finally able to make good use of his legs. Jayce eagerly helps him.
They grow closer and closer. At this point Viktor very much realizes that he’s in love with Jayce, but he’s conflicted. Continually he tries to convince himself that his affection isn’t reciprocated, but Jayce’s words, his body language, the way he looks at him, they all tell differently.
When Viktor confesses Jayce responds that while he cares deeply about him, he simply sees him as a brother. Jayce is still kind, still determined to keep Viktor around, but he already has a partner.
A broken heart proves to be much more painful to live with than any illness.
One day Viktor decides to return to the water, never to surface again.

*... And Intemperate
The 1966 New York City smog was a major air-pollution episode and environmental disaster, coinciding with that year's Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Smog covered the city and its surrounding area from November 23 to 26, filling the city's air with damaging levels of several toxic pollutants.
Anactoria (or Anaktoria; Ancient Greek: Ἀνακτορία) is a woman mentioned in the work of the ancient Greek poet Sappho. Sappho, who wrote in the late seventh and early sixth centuries BCE, names Anactoria as the object of her desire in a poem numbered as fragment 16. Another of her poems, fragment 31, is traditionally called the "Ode to Anactoria", though no name appears in it.
The Badge Man is a figure that is purportedly present within the Mary Moorman photograph of the assassination of United States president John F. Kennedy in Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963. Conspiracy theorists have suggested that this figure is a sniper firing a weapon at the president from the grassy knoll.
The Destroying Angel and Daemons of Evil Interrupting the Orgies of the Vicious and Intemperate is an 1832 English oil painting on canvas by English artist William Etty, first exhibited in 1832. Etty had become famous for nude paintings, and acquired a reputation for tastelessness, indecency and a lack of creativity. With The Destroying Angel he hoped to disprove his critics with an openly moral piece.
The 1881 world tour of King Kalākaua of the Hawaiian Kingdom was his attempt to save the Hawaiian culture and population from extinction by importing a labor force from Asia-Pacific nations. Critics in Hawaii believed the labor negotiations were just an excuse to see the world. The 281-day trip gave Kalākaua the distinction of being the first monarch to circumnavigate the globe.
The murder of Sir William de Cantilupe, who was born around 1345, by members of his household, took place in Scotton, Lincolnshire, in March 1375. The chief suspects were two neighbours—a local knight, Ralph Paynel; and the sheriff, Sir Thomas Kydale—as well as de Cantilupe's entire household, particularly his wife Maud, the cook and a squire. The staff were probably paid either to carry out or to cover up the crime, while Paynel had been in dispute with the de Cantilupes for many years; it is possible that Maud was conducting an affair with Kydale.
The nuckelavee is a horse-like demon from Orcadian folklore that combines equine and human elements. British folklorist Katharine Briggs called it "the nastiest" of all the demons of Scotland's Northern Isles. The nuckelavee's breath was thought to wilt crops and sicken livestock, and the creature was held responsible for droughts and epidemics on land despite being predominantly a sea-dweller.
Surtsey is an uninhabited volcanic island located in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago off the southern coast of Iceland. It was formed in a volcanic eruption which began 130 metres (430 feet) below sea level, and reached the surface on 14 November 1963. It was intensively studied by volcanologists during its eruption, and afterwards by botanists and other biologists as life forms gradually colonised the originally barren island.
The Tichborne case was a legal cause célèbre that fascinated Victorian Britain in the 1860s and 1870s. It concerned the claims by a man sometimes referred to as Thomas Castro or as Arthur Orton, but usually termed "the Claimant", to be the missing heir to the Tichborne baronetcy.
"Well he would, wouldn't he?" is a British political phrase and aphorism that is commonly used as a retort to a self-interested denial. The Welsh model Mandy Rice-Davies used the phrase while giving evidence during the 1963 trial of the English osteopath Stephen Ward. Ward is considered to have been made a scapegoat for the Profumo affair, a scandal involving John Profumo, the Secretary of State for War. During the trial, Ward's lawyer James Burge asked Rice-Davies whether she was aware that Lord Astor—a hereditary peer and Conservative politician—had denied having an affair with her; Rice-Davies replied "Well he would, wouldn't he?"

Queer people in the middle ages
So, the whiny manchildren, who want the middle ages to conform to their white supremacist fantasy, also keep claiming that there were no queer people in the middle ages - or that in fact queer folks just miraculously materialized at some point in the 1970s. But let me talk about one thing: How do we know that there were queer people in the middle ages? And how do we know that actually apparently at least some queer people in the European middle ages were living fairly openly?
Now, the very obvious answer to the first question is, that we do know that biologically queerness is simply a part of human nature. We know that just some people will be queer. How many people are queer... Well, biologist and psycholigists will argue with no end about this. Because of course we cannot look at someone and say "Oh, definitely a queer person", so we can only base our assumptions on what people say when asked. And we absolutely do know that how many people will admit to being queer the less afraid they are of societal consequences. Of course, biologically we can look at some apes and will see that their group behaviors work centrally over exchanging sexual favors with basically most apes being bi... But yeah, currently we can only guess. Maybe 10% of all humans are queer in some way or form - maybe it is more like 50%, maybe even more. We don't really know.
But what about the middle ages?
See, here I gotta say that I at times am annoyed with the way a lot of queer folks interact with history by just speculating about the queerness of some well known historical figures. Don't get me wrong, quite a few of them might have been queer. But this also falls into a very typical falacy.
Basically, when we talk about history we have the bad habbit of talking mainly about a few well known historical figures. When it comes to the middle ages, this narrative tends to focus mostly on clergy and nobility. This is partly because we have the best historical record of them - but also because to this day we tend to overvalue the lives of people who have influence.
And the other falacy is, that we just assume that the Victorian ideals about sex were true in the middle ages and that henceforth people were not able to be open about it.
Because here is the thing. We actually do have records of people being fairly open about it. This is partly records we have from lower nobility and especially gentry, but at times also from the peasants and normal folks that history often tends to ignore.
See, when I look at the historical record I could not care less about the richer nobility and royalty. Because their lives could not be further removed from normal society at the time. And especially I do not really care about the politics in terms of wars and aliances and such. Because it tells us fairly little about what LIFE at the time actually looked like.
No, the stuff I find interesting is the letters send by normal people - and stuff like grafitti. Maybe diaries, we still have access too. Or one interesting source I found for the middle ages: A collection of jokes a French monk wrote down over the course of years.
Because this is the kind of source that reflects the life of normal folks a lot better than whatever political drama some duke or king or bishop was involved in.
And in those sources you will find... that people are actually fairly open in talking about queerness. Heck, we even have sources in this regard that talk about specific sexual acts. Going so far that through this we have at least some vague ideas about kink at the time (though that really is a topic on which the historical record is super light).
In fact we have sources of this sort going back to the ancient times, even. Which is also why we know that the Romans in general were a lot more put off by queerness than people in the early and high medieval times. (Mind you, this did not stop the Romans from having gay sex, they were just a lot more scandalized by it!)
Of course, this is nothing that people are taught in school. Heck, you can manage to study history and still be ignorant of this, because this is not the type of sources a lot of history is concerned with or was concerned with for the longest time. Recently this is shifting a bit - but shifts tend to be slow.
So, yes, we know that queerness was definitely something that existed in the middle ages. Yes, the time was still very heteronormative - but it was clearly also less scandalous about queerness than either the Romans or the folks in the Rennaissance.

A bit about me!
🍄🏛️🌲🏛️🏔️🏛️🌲🔮🌲🏛️🏔️🏛️🌲🏛️🍄
I’m Isaac, I’m a baby polytheist born and raised Christian in the PNW! I’m pretty scarred from Christianity and the ablism I suffered in my upbringing as a result of autism and ADD, and the “special” schooling I received as a “treatment” for it. I am cautiously re-exploring spirituality, inspired by my 75 year old neighbor who is a witch! I’m starting my journey with Hellenism, Celtic Paganism, and Norse paganism and they have always been a fascination to me. I’m deeply connected to the earth and nature and always have been, and would love to become more spiritually in twinned with it.

lafontaine from the carmilla webseries was truly one of the most characters of all time. they're a mad scientist biologist. they're a good friend. they're simultaneously the most unhinged and the most chill member of their group. they got mind controlled by an ancient fish god. they did necromancy without telling anyone. they tried to kill god with a diy gun full of nanobots. they dissect things as a coping mechanism. their love interests include a victorian ghost-cyborg-vampire-zombie and a repressed normie. they're even nonbinary.
#eliot posts#carmilla#lafontaine#s. lafontaine#guess what series from my teen years i've been rewatching#i have the same fav character now as i did back then. lafontaine my beloved.#sone aspects of the series i actually appreciate more now that i'm the sane age as the characters#tho i'm also noticing some flaws now that i missed back then#and also how it is just such a crystalized essence of mid 2010s quirky tumblr girl culture#but nonetheless i still love this beautiful campy low budget dumpster fire#it's so fun and has some genuinely great moments#and was some of my earliest exposure to queer rep

Twisted Wonderland Arknights!AU HCs Part 1: Savanaclaw
Commemorating my return to this blog after 1212391813 years (rl has been overwhelming), I'd like to write myself a self-indulgent HC of a crossover between two of my current gacha game hyperfixations.
Some weeks ago, thanks to my insomnia, I made a thread on twitter to make myself sleepy. It's about TWST characters with visible physical characteristics that may pass as Arknights characters which includes their possible race as well but I can only post pictures without explanations. So now, I'd like to do the similar thing but I'm gonna break down the ideas.
Explanations including the description and lore of the races, a quick highlight of what I thought as interesting parallels in settings, stories, or characters, and simple wild guess about what specific animal species they could be since Arknights is pretty specific with the animal species' they referenced in this game.
Disclaimer:
English is not my first language and this post is so self-indulgent I don't even think much about the grammar or such so bear with me and my messy writings.
Pardon any lore inaccuracies of both games. Feel free to correct me if you find any.
Introduction to non-Arknights players and those who are not familiar with the game: Arknights is an RPG tower defense mobile gacha game made by Chinese developer 'Hypergryph'. The story of Arknights took place in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic planet called Terra. The 'humans' who inhabited Terra got kemomimi and anthropomorphic features of animals and mythological creatures, which then divides them into several races based on the animal they're referenced from.
Leona Kingscholar | Race: Aslan

Aslan is a race in Arknights which is based on lions, they're somewhat a sub-race of the Felines which is based on cats and big cats. They originated from desert area of a country called Sargon, though many of them migrated to a country called Victoria, the Arknights equivalent of the United Kingdom. This race is known to bring the blood of royalty and prominent figures in politics.

The only aslan character in-game so far is Siege, the leader of a street gang called the Glasgow Gang and the last heir of Victorian royalty. Personally I like how Siege's rough vibe as a gang leader as well as her royalty background kinda matches well with Leona. Even I've seen some fan-artists draw crossover fanarts of them and boy do I need more of them.

Since Leona was twisted from the Lion King, I believe that his referenced species is Panthera leo melanochaita, a sub-species of African lion mainly inhabiting Southern and Eastern Africa where many assumed was the setting where the Lion King take place.
Ruggie Bucchi | Race: Reproba/Rebbah

Reprobas in Arknights are based on hyenas and the can be recognized through traits such as pricked ears and tails with tufts of hair, spots, or stripes. Just like the aslans, they originated from desert area of Sargon as well though many of them ended up spreading everywhere across Terra. They're known to possess knowledge in wilderness survival which is also why many of them are working as mercenaries, biologist, geology researchers, and such.

Since he's twisted from the hyenas of the Lion King, undoubtedly his referenced species would be the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta).

Jack Howl | Race: Lupo

Lupo is a race based on wolves. Their traits can be noticed by their pricked ears and bushy tails. They originated and mostly found in a country called Siracusa which is Arknights' equivalent of Italy. Siracusan lupos are often associated with mafia-like community, though many of them are also working in other fields.

Now, there are no wolf character in the Lion King and from Jack's unique magic we can see that his wolf form definitely doesn't seem like any African wolves (not to mention that unlike Ruggie and Leona who came from Sunset Savannah, Jack came from Shaftsland). His fur is white and seems thick, indicating that he's most likely a part of wolf species that lives in colder climate. With that in mind, I think the best referenced species for Jack is the Eurasian wolf or common wolf (Canis lupus lupus).

And that's all for Savanaclaw. I made this as a stress-reliever but if there are anybody who read this post I really appreciate you for your time and I hope this could entertain you🥰 .
Nobody's asking but, yes, I'm gonna continue making the 2nd part of this. Hint:

Finally showing Abigail's family members! They are pretty important for lore reasons so I'll talk about them now.
Alysa meshol(formerly known as alysa howard) is a high society lady who maintained the family clothing business and who managed to maintain a large fortune for this (clothing in the victorian era was no small feat) however this was at the cost of his social life by isolating himself from potential distractions and his cold and strict attitude made it difficult to get him to interact with anyone other than his family or family servants.
However, shortly before getting engaged she had an affair with one of the house servants, Abraham was a family servant for years and one of the few friends Alysa had, however at some point their relationship became physical and ended with she pregnant with Abigail.
Despite her pregnancy, her husband did not want to break the engagement, so when Abigail was born her mother was married to her stepfather Gael Meshol, who had an insurance agency.
However, Abigail's existence was hidden from the press for many years, being locked up at home while her mother had children with her stepfather.
Abigail grew up trying to earn her mother's approval, but she gave up when she realized that her mother would never consider her anything other than a stain on her family.
Abigail's stepfather was delighted with her intelligence, so he decided to give her the same education as her younger brothers and she quickly became his pride as she possessed a lot of intellectual and political potential.
Abigail grew up close to her biological father and her half-brother Austin. Austin grew up kind and somewhat idealistic but had the talent to follow in his sister's footsteps despite being born sickly and weak.
Abigail did not know that Abraham was her father until her adolescence and then she stopped communicating with her mother but maintained contact with him.
It was from Abraham that Abigail got the inspiration to fight for workers' rights and he always supported his daughter since he thought that she deserved to have more opportunities than he had and he was always a very loving father.
His brother Aaron grew up having a very violent rivalry with Aby, whom he considered inferior to him due to racist and sexist thoughts(typical man of the 20th century), and it did not help that his father constantly compared them, causing Aaron to come to regard Abigail an intense hatred that later ended in homicide.
Aaron went to Abigail's house to demand money, by that time his father had disinherited him until he achieved something big and didn't gamble with his agency's money, when Abigail refused to give him money Aaron strangled her to death, Instead of taking responsibility, he stole her research and burned her house with an oil lamp (those things were very dangerous at the time).
Fortunately, years later Austin uncovered the truth about Aaron and he died in prison after hanging himself in his cell after spending about 4 years receiving the same horrible treatment as all prisoners.
Austin managed to live to be over 70 years old and managed to make a great name for himself among biologists, and managed to win the legal battle so that Abigail's research could once again be her as it should be, he married a woman named Layla and had triplets(abigail second, amelie and amanda).
Ironically, Austin is the one who lived the longest even though he was sickly and weak, his parents did not exceed 60 and Aaron did not reach 50😅

Some Halloween-related headcanons since it is 🎃🦇🕯️ the season! 🕯️🦇🎃 These apply to my arts & music verse and to my marine biologist verse.
Autumn is Itachi's favorite season and Halloween is his favorite holiday/celebration of the year. In general, he is a big fan of psychological horror books and video games.
When they were younger, he would always take Sasuke to go trick-or-treat around the neighborhood. Any of Sasuke's friends that wanted to go along as well would always be welcome.
Nowadays, even though he doesn't really participate directly anymore, he always has some nice treats waiting for anybody that might visit. Which include handmade cookies, cupcakes, and other thematic little things.
Pumpkin carving isn't really something he's fond of doing himself, mostly because of the potential to make a mess. However, if any of his friends/family are into it, he will cheer them on.
Usually he doesn't put much effort into Halloween decorations, depending on how much free time he has for it or if he is even home at the time (which is a thing in both these verses, for different reasons). But, again, if he lives with somebody who's into it, he will definitely want to help decorating.
As far as decorations go, the favorite is (unsurprisingly) crows. Something else he loves is thematic candles and lights, and merch related to his favorite books and games.
If he dresses up, he will actually make his own costume. In the arts & music verse, he will design it from scratch and, in the marine biologist verse, he will put together something with whatever he has in his dresser at the time.
Regarding costumes, he doesn't necessarily have a favorite but he is quite fond of Victorian and Gothic aesthetics. And, again, characters from his favorite franchises.
This one is more of a fun fact but, in the arts & music verse, he can play the organ so if you ever need someone to provide spooky music for your Halloween party you know who to call.
Another fun fact: Itachi is that person who will point at a decor skeleton and judge it if any of the bones are missing and/or misplaced.
One final fun fact: depending on the thread, Itachi has a female black cat named Lunafreya.

hi!! big fan of your blog. you really changed my succession viewing experience and i can't wait to rewatch after reading the recs you've put up!
that being said, i read megan garber's piece in the atlantic about the animal imagery/darwinian implications in the show and really loved it (as a biologist with an interest in sociology lol). do you have any specific reading material relating to the topics in that piece? i'd just love to read more but not super sure what i'm even asking/looking for, so feel free to ignore!
hi! so, there's quite a large body of literature in history of biology that deals with the politics of evolutionary theory, including darwinism. you can read these in any order, though i would recommend starting with bob young's 'malthus and the evolutionists: the common context of biological and social theory' if you haven't already encountered it. this was a signal essay in historically grounding the argument that darwinian evolutionary theory read victorian industrial capitalism and malthusian population anxiety into the natural world, which was why it appealed to victorian men of science in a way that previous theories of evolution (sometimes referred to as species transformation or transmutationism, or transformisme / transformismo in france / italy) hadn't. bob was a marxist historian at a time when history of biology had been largely written by working scientists and naive positivists, and his methodological influence continues to be felt in the field today. anyway, these are only starting points and are centred on france and britain, and also i excluded p*ter b*wler because i hate his ass:
the politics of evolution: morphology, medicine, and reform in radical london, by adrian desmond
utopia's garden: french natural history from old regime to revolution, by emma spary
the age of lamarck: evolutionary theories in france, 1790–1830, by pietro corsi
l'introduction du darwinisme en france au xixe siècle, by yvette conry (<- i can't remember whether this was translated into english, sorry)
faces of degeneration: a european disorder, 1848–1918, by daniel pick
darwin: the life of a tormented evolutionist, by adrian desmond and james moore
the cuvier-geoffroy debate: french biology in the decades before darwin, by toby appel
evolution before darwin: theories of the transmutation of species in edinburgh, 1804–1834, by bill jenkins
the spirit of system: lamarck and evolutionary biology, by richard burkhardt
the meaning of evolution: the morphological construction and ideological reconstruction of darwin's theory, by robert j richards
the great nation in decline: sex, modernity, and health crises in revolutionary france, c. 1750–1850, by sean quinlan
lamarck, the mythical precursor: a study of the relations between science and ideology, by madeleine barthélemy-madaule
victorian sensation: the extraordinary publication, reception, and secret authorship of vestiges of the natural history of creation, by james secord
