Chapter 7: Satan’s Railway

Earth, 1995

“Amelia! I hope you’re picking up your toys!” The girl called out to the 8 year old she was babysitting, there was no answer. “Little girl, you better not be tryin to scare me again.”

The girl walked throughout the house, the silence started making her anxious; “Amelia..?”

She made her way down the hall to Amelia’s bedroom, “I was just kidding, I’m still taking you to see A Goofy Movie later,” the girl entered the room then froze.

Amelia was laying on her bed in a puddle of her own blood staring right at the girl. The girl gasped, “Oh no, no no no!” She ran over to Amelia looking for any sign that she might be alive. “Please! No! What did you do?!” The girl sobbed to herself.

“What did you do?!”

“Okay guys!” Charlie clapped, “I hope you all got your partners, today’s activity is all about getting to know each other; and we’ve noticed that there’s been some isolation and tension with each other.”

Angel rolled his eyes, “Can I just say I talk to everyone, it’s the newbies with the isolation problem.”

“Well that’s why you got paired with a stranger,” Vaggie put her hands on her hips. “Now let’s get to it, you only have an hour and a half.”

Everyone dispersed. Angel sighed walking away, Erin was following behind, “Where are we going huh?” She said cheerfully.

“Somewhere I don’t know,” he sat on the couch. Erin jumped on the couch next to him landing on his leg.

“So, what’s your favorite color buddy?” She smiled.

These are times when Angel wished he was high.

“So..I was thinking,” Eric started.

Sugar rolled her eyes, “That you probably rigged the activity so we could be alone.”

“Well no, that was just fate,” Eric smiled. “I was wondering if you could help me with my podcast.”

“Ugh what?” Sugar groaned, she didn’t even know what a podcast was. “Can’t we just answer the questions?”

“Come on, it’ll be fun,” He smirked.

“I don’t even know what a podcast is,” Sugar responded.

“A podcast is just talking about whatever you want on live, but you usually listen to it,” Eric explained.

“Oh! Like radio,” Sugar smiled.

“No,” He replied, offended. “You can invite people to join you on podcasts, to like ask them questions and stuff.”

Sugar was confused, “Can’t you invite people to be on radio stations-“

“Yes! Yes! Ok! But the only difference is that I can do my podcasts from RIGHT here!” Eric points to his bed. “While you have to travel to a dusty old radio station! Plus you can listen to podcasts on the go! Can’t do that with radio!” He headphones around his neck and handed her a pair. “Here.”

Sugar took the headphones, staying silent. Eric opened his laptop, putting the headphones on. “Sit over here,” he gestured to a little table with small mics sitting on opposite sides. They both sat down and Eric started recording.

“Good afternoon sinners of Pentagram City, welcome to another day of Ravin’ with Rave,” he said into the microphone.

Sugar covered her mouth trying not to laugh.

“Today I have a special guest with me, it’s hell’s cutest little porn star Sugar Cube,” Erin looks at her. “How are you doing today?”

She leaned into the mic, “I’m fine, how are you?” She said awkwardly.

“Awesome as always, I have a few questions for you today? You ready?” He takes out flash cards.

“Sure.”

“What made you want to become a porn star?” Eric read from the card.

“Been waitin’ to ask me that huh?” Sugar smirked.

“No I just wanted to know- ya know..” Eric blushes. “What makes a person wanna do that..”

“Being homeless and starving makes a person wanna do that, or sometimes people just like to do porn, it’s hell. We can do what we want,” Sugar said, she didn’t know what to think of that first question.

“That..is definitely true,” Eric mumbled looking embarrassed.

“A little birdie told me that you watch my videos,” Sugar bit her lip.

“Who told you that?” He gasped.

She giggles, “You did; so which one’s your favorite?”

Clearing his throat Eric said, “I guess probably the one where you have a chain around your neck and you’re getting takin from the back; that was hot as shit. At least in my opinion.”

Sugar looked uncomfortable putting her hand on her neck, “Yeah..hot.” There was an awkward pause, “What’s the next question?”

“Right! Um.. what was your race when you were alive?” He asked.

“Geez these are some hard hitting questions,” she laughed a little.

“My apologies, you don’t have to-”

“Don’t be sorry, but I don’t think race should matter anymore; some of us are either mixed with objects or animals. I don’t think anyone’s worried about race.” She smiled to reassure him.

“You’re right,” Eric scratched the back of his head.

“So, when did you die?” Sugar tried to keep whatever this podcast show thing going.

“2020” He answered.

“Wow! It’s been that long?!” She was shocked, she honestly hadn’t even known Earth was in the 2000s; “What’s happening up there?”

“I’m not sure about now but last time I was alive there was a global pandemic,” Eric said a bit too enthusiastically. “Anyway, your story was basically a rags to riches kind of deal huh?”

“I guess,” Sugar was again uncomfortable. She wanted to help, but were all the questions about this? She thought they could talk about whatever they wanted.

“How’d you go from being homeless to working with one of the most famous overlords?” He asked.

“I don’t remember,” she looked around the room wanting to leave.

“What do you mean that was like the biggest thing to happen to you? And you just can’t remember?” Eric kept talking.

“That’s just me,” she shrugged.

“Is it? How did you even get into something like that?” Eric chuckles a bit. “Like, were you like a sexually active kid or something?”

Sugar stayed silent, “Please stop.” She quietly begged him. Eric seemed to get that he’d gone too far.

“Sorry, I shouldn’t have asked you that stuff,” Eric sat back in his chair.

There was an awkward silence, Sugar took a deep breath. Did he really not have anything else to talk about? This demon was drowning, he didn’t deserve it but Sugar would help him out. Just this once.

“Would you like to hear a story Rave?” She smirked. “I’m pretty sure the listeners would love to.”

“A story about what?” Eric leaned forward interested.

“My mom told me this story when I was younger, it’s a story about a train-”

“Boo,” he interrupted.

She looked at him with a straight face, “You done?”

“Continue, but if this is about Thomas the tank engine I’m gonna scream,” Eric said.

“Anyway, this story starts a very long time ago,” she smirked.

Earth, 1888

Once there used to be a railroad system that ran through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, then back around.

No one really knows who made it but it was convenient for the people. Anyway on June of 1888, William Francis, the conductor of the train was making his way through a tunnel in Mississippi with about 500 passengers onboard; when apparently he started acting strange, hearing whispers. Telling him all kinds of horrifying things, then in an instant the train derailed at the exit of the tunnel; killing everyone except William. A few weeks later he was found dead in his bathroom.

“Seriously?” Eric raised an eyebrow. “That’s it?”

Sugar grins, “I never said I was finished.”

Earth, 1925

A few years went by and the tracks were soon abandoned and cut off from Alabama and Mississippi, people thought the tracks were cursed.

How did such a nice family man like William kill 500 people?

Some people say he wasn’t all there.

Others say that the Devil made him do it.

They think the Devil promised him immortality for the souls on the train.

They called it “Satan’s Railway”.

Anyway, William had a son named Tobias, he was just a baby when his dad died so he didn’t remember him.

Tobias, like his father, was a family man; with a wife, and a daughter. He worked hard for his family, and tried to keep his soul as pure as possible. While he did all these things for everyone else, he never got anything in return.

He worked hard but was still in poverty.

He was faithful to his wife but he had suspicions about her faith.

His life was miserable.

However, one day when walking home from work he decided to take a shortcut over the abandoned tracks; while walking his mind began to wander. He was lost in his own thoughts, that’s when he looked up and realized…

He was actually lost.

For miles there was nothing but fog and tracks.

That’s when he heard something.

“Tobias” the voice whispered. “Turn around,” it sounded so close. “Please, I wanna show you something.”

Tobias turned around.

No one knows what happened that night, no one knows what Tobias saw or who was talking to him.

But after that he was a completely different man, he was violent. He would go out late at night and come back in the early morning.

People started going missing.

Day by day Tobias was either antsy or angry. His wife couldn’t take it anymore, she confronted him.

The next day, his daughter Gertie found her mother in the kitchen with no limbs. She caught her father covered in blood and holding a rifle, Gertie stared up at him frozen in place.

“I’m sorry,” was all Tobias said before he shot himself in the mouth.

Gertie, left to be an orphan, became the talk of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She wasn’t too keen on the attention; when she was old enough she went up north to Chicago, Illinois. Hopefully to get away from whatever curse plagued her family.

June, 1986

Years passed and Gertie had a beautiful daughter named Eugenia, who grew up and had two daughters of her own.

Eugenia had married a nice man after her daughter’s birth father had died, the man was very sweet and treated the girls as if they were his own.

The youngest daughter was always seen as quiet and innocent, she could do no wrong. However the older daughter was seen as a headache, Eugenia and the older daughter always argued; she thought maybe it was because of teenage hormones or that she was just ungrateful.

Eugenia had the idea to go to where her mother was born and raised, Gertie had long passed and couldn’t stop Eugenia from going to see her relatives.

So they all went. Her, and her daughters and the stepfather.

But things didn't go as planned, the older daughter ran away from the house they were staying at. She ran all the way to “Satan’s Railway”.

It was tapped up and blocked off but she continued on. The girl noticed a thick fog surrounding her, she remained calm walking in the direction she came from.

But there was nothing.

Just tracks and fog.

Until…

“Hey, turn around,” a voice whispered. “I wanna show you something.”

The girl knew better.

She knew not to turn around.

She knew who this was.

“Why?” The girl asked.

There was a pause.

“I want to help.” The voice answered

“What do you want?” She looked at her feet, there wasn’t anyone behind her.

“Your trust,” the voice replied. “Turn around.”

The girl turned around.

“The end,” Sugar smiled at a shocked Eric.

“What do you mean the end?” Eric exclaimed. “What happened next?!”

“She died,” Sugar shrugged.

“Instantly?” Eric replied.

“Nope, somewhere in 1995 I believe,” she said nonchalantly.

“What happened to the mom? And the little sister and the husband-”

“Shh,” she put her fingers to his lips. “Some stories don’t have clear endings, only cliffhangers.”

“Wait..?” He narrowed his eyes. “Is this fake?”

“If you want it to,” Sugar shrugged.

“How’d your mom know all these generations of people?” Eric asked.

“Oh my gosh! It’s just a story dude,” she rolled her eyes.

“If I have nightmares tonight, it’s all your fault,” he pointed at her.

“Don’t worry baby, I’ll be here to cuddle with you,” Sugar winked.

Eric waved her off, “Whatever, I have one last question?”

“Okay?” She leaned forward.

“Do you think every soul down here is redeemable?” He looked at her.

Sugar had to think, “I think whoever is willing to change for the better is redeemable.”

Eric nodded, “I like that answer.” He smiled at her and she smiled back, “Anyway! Thanks for being here with me today.”

“Thanks for inviting me,” she shook his hand.

“Alright you sinners this is Rave signing off, see y’all at another party,” he stopped the recording. “That was awesome,” Eric high fived her.

“Ravin with Rave?” Sugar raised an eyebrow.

“What? It’s cool,” Eric took his headphones off.

“I guess,” she rolled her eyes. “I accept your apology by the way,” she smiled.

“Oh, um thanks, I’m sorry I had come up with all that stuff and wasn’t even thinking about how you’d feel-”

“You’re fine, if anything it’s one step further to redemption,” Sugar gave him a thumbs up.

“I guess you’re right- oh! I never asked, when did you die,” He asked.

“Sometime around 1995,” she answered.

“Wow really?- wait didn’t you say-”

“Um Latte?!” Angel called. “There’s something here for you!”

“Really?!” Sugar jumped up.

She ran down the stairs almost missing a step, everyone was in the parlor standing very far away from a red box with a bow on it. Sugar gasped, “Is that for me.” She was about to run towards it but was stopped by Vaggie.

“Wait!” She had her spear pointed at box.

The demons watched the box, it started to move and everyone got defensive. “Oh my god,” Erin hid behind Charlie. “What if it’s a bomb or something?”

“Angel shoot it!” Sugar said she was excited. “I’ve never been sent a bomb before.” Everyone looked at her horrified, “What?”

“I don’t think shooting it would help,” Angel said. “But..” He pulled out his guns. The demons all started to freak out, half were telling Angel not to shoot while the other half were egging him on, “Relax I was just kidding,” he laughed.

The box moved off the table landing on the floor, everyone screamed jumping behind whatever was around the room.

“I wanna see the bomb!” Niffty ran towards the box before anyone could catch her, she tried picking up the box but it was too heavy so she kicked it making everyone scream again.

“My my what is happening here?” A voice made everyone turn to it. It was Alastor walking into the parlor with Voe.

“Where were you two?” Angel raised an eyebrow.

“Just talking,” Voe answered.

“Uh huh,” he smirked.

The box moved again, this time it whimpered. Alastor walked towards the box; he opened it then dropped the lid. Backing up.

“Is it a bomb?” Charlie was in Vaggie’s arms.

“It’s even worse!” Alastor sounded terrified.

Voe walked up to the box looking inside, then turned to everyone; “It’s a dog.”

“A dog bomb?” Zeke looked in the box. Voe looked at him like he was stupid.

“Are you serious?” She looked him up and down.

“Ugh! Move! It’s my bomb!” Sugar pushed Zeke out of the way. “Awe!! He’s so cute!!” Inside was a large red dog with four eyes and little horns on his head. She pulled him out of the box, “You are heavy, look! It’s a dog!” She showed everyone.

“That’s what I said,” Voe rolled her eyes.

“Awe man,” Niffty was disappointed.

“How cute!” Charlie walked towards the dog. The rest of the group surrounded her.

“Who sent this?” Husk looked at the animal disgusted.

Angel looked in the box, there was an envelope inside. On it read,

“Val ♥️”

okay we obviously stan motorcycle adam but may i ask for a brief explanation as to why you (correctly) predicted he would get one in cdth? like how did you guess that lmao

I’ll be honest: I have no idea how I came to that conclusion textually/factually, only emotionally. 

VERY NOT-BRIEF EXPLANATION TO FOLLOW.

We recorded Episode 0 of the Ravin’ Girls podcast WAAAAAY before I was really even on Tumblr or following Maggie on social media or anything–I think it was late July or early August 2017, then released on Sept. 21st. Maybe Maggie had made an offhand comment about motorcycles I had run across? Mostly, though, a motorcycle for Adam just really, really made sense to me from a practical/economical standpoint. AND A SEXY STANDPOINT.

LOTS OF MOTORCYCLE FEELINGS UNDER THE CUT, INCLUDING PHOTOS OF ME AS A UNFORMED GRUB-LET. (aka “child”)

#this except reversed #i really want ADAM on a motorcycle #he would totally justify how economical they are #both in initial purchase price and in gas mileage + maintenance #also his commute back to the barns would be faster #because he can lane split and get through gridlock #and parking is easier at a big school right? #but really he would love the look of shock and awe on ronan’s face #every time adam pulls up on his bike and flips down his kickstand #and pulls his helmet off and his hair falls into his eyes #and he’s in LEATHER and ronan cannot keep his shit together #and adam’s like your hands are petting my ass again lynch #and ronan’s not even sorry about it #and practical adam is thinking another point to the motorcycle #and jeezus #this is all i want for christmas #amen 

I even did some cost analysis on a very expensive bike (Ducati 2019 17K-30K) vs. a practical mid-sized car (Honda 2019 17K-30K). 

I ask you: which would be sexier? I think we all can agree on the Ducati. ;P

All that said, I think it comes down to that fact that I grew up not only with Camaros, but also motorcycles. There wasn’t a time I can remember when we didn’t have Harley, Indian, or Triumph motorcycle parts stacked with band equipment in my living room (we didn’t have a “garage” on the “farm”, so into the living room it was stored.) Motorcycles have always just been a Thing in my life, my dad was constantly rebuilding classic bikes, so it made sense for Adam to do that too. (Of course, he probably won’t need to do that on a dream bike.) XD

on a related note, I started listening to the Ravin’ Girls podcast and I am having the time of my life

Thoughts on episode one: at one point somebody mentions not quite understanding exactly why Declan hates Ronan, and the quote that immediately came to mind was the following:

“On Thursday, his son Ronan found his [Niall Lynch’s] body in the driveway. On Friday, their mother stopped speaking and never spoke again. On Saturday, the Lynch brothers found that their father’s death left them rich and homeless. The will forbade them to touch anything in the house — their clothing, the furniture. Their silent mother. The will demanded they immediately move into Aglionby housing. Declan, the eldest, was meant to control the funds and their lives until his brothers reached eighteen. On Sunday, Ronan stole his deceased father’s car. On Monday, the Lynch brothers stopped being friends.”

I feel like this pretty succinctly sums up their entire rivalry/conflict, or at least the start of it. One of the people in the podcast suggested that it was maybe Ronan stealing the car that shattered his relationship with Declan, but I feel like there’s too much going on to attribute it to just one thing.

Another note: getting to experience The Raven Boys after reading Call Down the Hawk is a really spectacular experience, 10/10 would recommend
