Jerry Lewis in 'The Patsy', 1964
Nobody did it like Jerry. The absolute master of physical comedy. He was absolutely hilarious.

Peter Lorre in drag again, this time it’s Morgan Heywood from The Patsy, who I’m certain, having been a Broadway executive, may have indulged in once in a while. He's angry because he has to work with Jerry Lewis.

One of the comments under the video. Which I confirm word for word: Every time I watch this, I think to myself - how many statues actually hit the ground before he caught em all- I love Jerry!! He's the greatest, sexiest, funniest man I've ever seen. His youth seems to be eternal, and no matter how old he is/gets I'll always see his face as the gorgeous 24 year old on CCH.
And I add: seven minutes without practically speaking. Just physical comedy. Everywhere in the world this comedy is understood. That's why Jerry was loved ALL OVER THE WORLD.

Watching The Patsy (1964) as it is the only one I haven’t seen (and is available) and I guess it is ironic to watch the movie that killed him on his birthday.
But goddamn Jerry Lewis is so fucking annoying. Like I suck at things big time, but this man’s characters, or maybe even him as well, is so unfit for even the simplest tasks, like breathing for instance. I just wanna kill this man so bad. I see fucking red whenever he is on screen now.

Jane Winton and Marion Davies in The Patsy (King Vidor, 1928)
Cast: Marion Davies, Orville Caldwell, Marie Dressler, Lawrence Gray, Dell Henderson, Jane Winton. Screenplay: Ralph Spence, based on a play by Barry Conners. Cinematography: John F. Seitz. Art direction: Cedric Gibbons. Film editing: Hugh Wynn. Music: Vivek Maddala.
King Vidor is not generally known as a comedy director, and The Patsy shows why: Vidor seems to have no sense of how to set up a gag, merely letting the skilled comic acting of Marion Davies as the put-upon younger sister, Pat Hamilton, and Marie Dressler and Dell Henderson as her parents do the work. The result is a giddy, silly movie with a good many laughs, but not much coherence. Pat is smitten with Tony Anderson (Orville Caldwell), but her sister, Grace (Jane Winton) has her hooks in him -- until, that is, she starts running around with playboy Billy Caldwell (Lawrence Gray). Pat tries to win Tony by memorizing joke books -- for a silent film The Patsy is unusually heavy on gags in the intertitles -- but this only makes her parents, especially her domineering mother, think she's gone mad. Then she tries to make Tony jealous by pretending that she's in love with Billy, arriving at his house when he's drunk and trying to woo him by imitating movie stars like Mae Murray, Lillian Gish, and Gloria Swanson. Davies's skill and charm makes all of this palatable if not plausible, but almost every scene is stolen by Dressler, who uses face and body to upstage everyone. Vidor and Davies teamed again the same year for Show People, another comedy.

Jerry in "The Patsy" 1964
I really loved this one especially the end. It was pure 100% Jerry. And also, Ed Sullivan gave Martin and Lewis a mention. And Jerry tells his leading lady at the end of the movie "aren't you overacting", a phrase he used many times directed at Dean on the Colgate Comedy Hour. Beautiful!

A very quick doodle before I go to sleep of Morgan Heywood telling the main dancers where to stand on the stage. In a nice skirt because he likes being comfortable during rehearsals

In 1960, Sammy Davis Jr. appeared in a TV episode of General Electric Theater known as "The Patsy". I saw this episode when I was 10 yrs old. "The Patsy" plot overview: "Army recruit (Sammy Davis Jr's character (Jacob Johnson) from Peanut, S.C., is the butt of all jokes in his training platoon (99% white). He's a bumpkin with a golden heart and takes the frequent, often cruel ribbing in stride, choosing to think of his fellow enlisted troops as his friends. For example, at one point his platoon makes him "coffee sergeant" whose duty it is to taste the cook's coffee. They goad him into telling the cook that his coffee is putrid. The cook directs his anger at the hapless recruit.
At another point they simply tease him by taking his only letter from home and tossing it from one another while he tries to intercept it. It becomes obvious that he can't read. But the letter represents his connection with family. They make fun of his lack of sophistication and slow wit. But he does not lose his temper and remains sweetly resigned to his low status among his fellow soldiers.
The denouement comes when the platoon trains with dummy hand grenades. A few of the trainees see an opportunity to scare their patsy by throwing one of the practice grenades at their feet and huddling together in mock panic as he looks on with great fear. He yells at them to flee, and when they don't, he dives on the grenade and braces for what he believes will be certain death. This has a decidedly sobering effect on them. Their commanding officer coincidentally observes what happened and approaches. They snap to attention and he helps (Davis) to his feet and dusts him off. Boiling with anger, he tells the wiseguys that of all the men in the platoon there is no one he'd rather have with him in combat..." ~~ Even at 10 years old, that scene had a huge effect on me, emotionally. I never forgot it, but I had to look it up through Sammy Davis Jr's TV & Filmography before I found out what the name of that show was and when it was broadcast 60 yrs ago (on black & white TV no colors). Here's the Link
Today In History
Sammy Davis, Jr., legendary entertainer, received the 53rd NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date March 30, 1969 for: his multifaceted talent, his participation in the civil rights movement, and for his dedication to freedom, justice, quality, and the brotherhood of all mankind.
He overcame prevailing racism to establish himself as an entertainment legend, becoming a successful comedian, actor, dancer and singer. As part of the Rat Pack, with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. was known for films like Ocean’s 11 and Sergeants 3.
As his fame grew, his refusal to appear in any clubs that practiced racial segregation led to the integration of several venues in Miami Beach and Las Vegas.
A Tony-nominated performer, Davis was also associated with popular recordings like “I’ve Gotta Be Me” and the No. 1 hit “The Candy Man.”
