King Vidor is not generally known as a comedy director, and The Patsy shows why: Vidor seems to have no sense of how to set up a gag, merely letting the skilled comic acting of Marion Davies as the put-upon younger sister, Pat Hamilton, and Marie Dressler and Dell Henderson as her parents do the work. The result is a giddy, silly movie with a good many laughs, but not much coherence. Pat is smitten with Tony Anderson (Orville Caldwell), but her sister, Grace (Jane Winton) has her hooks in him -- until, that is, she starts running around with playboy Billy Caldwell (Lawrence Gray). Pat tries to win Tony by memorizing joke books -- for a silent film The Patsy is unusually heavy on gags in the intertitles -- but this only makes her parents, especially her domineering mother, think she's gone mad. Then she tries to make Tony jealous by pretending that she's in love with Billy, arriving at his house when he's drunk and trying to woo him by imitating movie stars like Mae Murray, Lillian Gish, and Gloria Swanson. Davies's skill and charm makes all of this palatable if not plausible, but almost every scene is stolen by Dressler, who uses face and body to upstage everyone. Vidor and Davies teamed again the same year for Show People, another comedy.

Che idiozia, non si trovano più i romanzi di Flannery O’Connor! (Altrove pubblicano tutte le lettere)

Flannery O’Connor è insopportabile – e questo è garante di grandezza. I suoi libri ti torturano, è come se sbattessi contro una pietra d’angolo. Nulla è lineare, i romanzi di Flannery O’Connor vanno letti crocefissi, a testa sotto. Cominciai con Il cielo dei violenti, il secondo romanzo, pubblico nel 1960. Fu un battesimo nell’ardore, nella fiamma bianca. “Il vecchio che diceva di essere un profeta, aveva cresciuto il ragazzo insegnandogli ad aspettare a sua volta la chiamata del Signore, e a tenersi pronto per il giorno in cui l’avrebbe udita. L’aveva istruito sui mali che toccano a un profeta, quelli che vengono dal mondo, e sono trascurabili, e quelli che vengono dal Signore e lo purificano ardendolo, perché lui stesso era stato purificato ardendo più e più volte. Lui, aveva imparato attraverso il fuoco”.

Di Flannery – i cui Collected Works sono editi dal 1988 nel fascicolo n. 39 della Library of America – s’è fatta, all’americana, fiction. L’agghiacciante precocità, il lupus, le galline ammaestrate da piccina e i pavoni allevati da grande, il talento nel mischiare Jonathan Swift a Tommaso d’Aquino. “Flannery O’Connor è stata l’autrice americana più originale dai tempi di Hemingway”, ha scritto Harold Bloom, senza capire molto, parere mio, dell’origine di questa originalità: “La O’Connor è una moralista così veemente che i lettori devono guardarsi dalla sua tendenziosità: il suo obbiettivo è fin troppo palese, prenderci di sorpresa e costringerci a sentire il bisogno della fede tradizionale”. Non è affatto così, tanto che FOC sconcerta proprio i lettori ‘cattolici’ – gli altri si godono l’eccentricità come un ventaglio estetico o come uno sgargiante esotismo. Piuttosto, come esiste la narrativa ‘ebraico americana’, che piace a tanti, così la O’Connor ha cavato una letteratura ‘paolina’, connessa alla ferocia letteraria di San Paolo, a quella determinazione che agonizza, una cecità piena di luce, fanatica, fantastica. (Parlo di strategia narrativa, di esito pubblico: le voragini della fede sono affari vostri).

Due brani da Mystery and Manners (in Italia come Nel territorio del diavolo. Sul mistero di scrivere, minimum fax, 2003). “La narrativa riguarda tutto ciò che è umano e noi siamo fatti di polvere, dunque se disdegnate d’impolverarvi non dovreste tentare di scrivere narrativa. Non è cosa abbastanza nobile per voi”. E poi. “In realtà, un’opera d’arte esiste indipendentemente dal suo autore non appena le parole sono sulla carta, e tanto più compiuta è l’opera, tanto meno importante è chi l’ha scritta o perché. se si studia letteratura, le intenzioni dello scrittore vanno rintracciate nell’opera stessa non nella sua vita… La buona narrativa si occupa della natura umana”.

Tutti i buoni di cuore, i kapò delle case editrici converranno che la O’Connor è tra i grandi narratori del secolo. Ci vorrebbe un po’ più di O’Connor come degna quaresima per predisporre un autore all’opera somma – semplicemente, non conoscere la O’Connor è come darsi alla pittura ignorando il blu giottesco della Cappella degli Scrovegni. Invece. Della O’Connor trovate Tutti i racconti, stampati deo gratia da Bompiani, ma sono scomparsi i suoi romanzi (soltanto due), La saggezza nel sangue (un tempo Garzanti) e Il cielo è dei violenti (un tempo Einaudi), pubblico 60 anni fa esatti. A me pare una esattissima presa per il cu*o. In effetti, Flannery è insopportabile.

Morì a 39 anni, nella santità creativa: intrattenne relazioni epistolari con Robert Lowell ed Elizabeth Bishop, aveva la stima di Robert Penn Warren. “Era uno degli scrittori più promettenti della nazione”, scrive il redattore del “New York Times”, raccontando la sua morte. Leggere il ‘coccodrillo’ griffato a NY – fin dal titolo: Used Religion and the South ad Themes in Her Work – è istruttivo: un equatore del pensare divide la letteratura ‘sudista’ da quella del Nord e delle metropoli. “Miss O’Connor aveva qualità che hanno attirato e infastidito molti critici”, marca il redattore, cecchino. Orville Prescott, nel 1960, l’ha definita “la strega bianca della letteratura”.

La sua traiettoria creativa, dal 1951 fino alla pubblicazione, postuma, nel 1965, di Everything That Rises Must Converge, è contraddistinta dal rapporto con un’altra scrittrice, Caroline Gordon. Di trent’anni più grande di Flannery, è lei, stimolata dall’amico comune Robert Fitzgerald, a riconoscerne immediatamente il genio radicale. “Sono felice che tu mi abbia concesso Flannery O’Connor. Sono piuttosto eccitata. Questa ragazza è una narratrice autentica… è un fenomeno raro: un romanziere cattolico che ha il senso del dramma”, scrive, nel maggio del 1951. La Gordon contatta subito FOC, si premura di trovare un editore per il libro. Grazie al legame con Robert Giroux, riesce a far pubblicare Wise Blood per Harcourt, Brace & Company. “L’originalità del suo libro mi ha sorpresa. Ci sono così pochi scrittori cattolici che posseggano una simile finezza narrativa, credo fermamente nella grandezza del suo romanzo… Molti scrittori pensano di essere Kafka. Lei è il solo che possa in un certo qual modo accettare un accostamento simile. Non credo che la sua narrativa derivi da Kafka: il suo modo di scrivere è il più originale che abbia letto negli ultimi tempi. Intendo dire che lei, come Kafka, parte da una narrativa ‘realista’ per dare atto al proprio sistema simbolico”.

Caroline Gordon (1895-1981), perduta nel tempo che fu, è stata scrittrice di riconosciuto talento – naturalmente, in Italia non è mai atterrata. Ha ottenuto un Guggenheim (1932), un O. Henry Award (1934; davanti a gente come Faulkner, Caldwell, Steinbeck, Thomas Wolfe), nel 1952 fu finalista con The Strange Children in una edizione monstre del National Book Award (insieme a lei: L’arpa d’erba di Truman Capote, Requiem per una monaca di William Faulkner, La veglia all’alba di James Agee, L’eletto di Thomas Mann, Il giovane Holden di Salinger; naturalmente, vinse il peggiore, Da qui all’eternità di James Jones). Più che altro, donna di siderale intelligenza, la Gordon conosceva un mucchio di gente – da Hemingway a Fitzgerald, da Hart Crane a E.E. Cummings – e portò all’altare Allen Tate, più giovane di lei di quattro anni. Il matrimonio fu funestato da tradimenti e sovrane ubriacature: i due divorziarono nel 1945, si risposarono nel 1946, divorziarono di nuovo nel 1959. Nel ’47 lei si convertì al cattolicesimo. Nel rapporto epistolare – pubblicato dalla University of Georgia Press come The Letters of Flannery O’Connor and Caroline Gordon, per la cura di Christine Flanagan: lo traduciamo?, figurarsi… – Flannery fa intendere di non apprezzare la fede di facciata della Gordon, tutta messe e mise, che va in brodo per le basiliche romane. Ma la sua è una spietata pietà (“Potrebbe essere superficialmente irreligiosa, ma non saremo giudicati per ciò che siamo superficialmente. Saremo giudicati dalla cruda potenza con cui usiamo ciò che ci è dato. Il successo non significa nulla per il Signore, non è quella la grazia”).

Caroline è la prima lettrice dei testi di Flannery, li analizza, li migliora, si premura affinché altri li leggano. Una sterzata nell’amicizia accade nel 1958, quando si attrezza una edizione francese de La saggezza nel sangue, per Gallimard. Caroline scrive una introduzione al romanzo che infastidisce Flannery. Il 4 dicembre Flannery si rivolge al traduttore – la lettera è ora in Good Things Out of Nazareth. The uncollected Letters of Flannery O’Connor and Friends –, Maurice-Edgar Coindreau: “Sono infelice del fatto che ci debba essere una introduzione al mio lavoro. Non credo sia necessaria e i francesi sono troppo intelligenti per accettare che qualcuno li guidi nella comprensione del romanzo: sono certa che una introduzione potrebbe soltanto irritarli”. Nel 1959 Gallimard stampa La sagesse dans le sang. Senza introduzione. Coindreau – che per Gallimard ha tradotto Hemingway e Faulkner, Steinbeck e Capote, Dos Passos e Nabokov; si legga Mémoires d’un traducteur, 1974 – si limita a una prefazione informativa. Flannery non se la prende troppo con Caroline; dà la colpa alla sua ‘confusione’ amorosa, al caos dei sentimenti, alla polluzione emotiva (è alla soglia del secondo divorzio). Resteranno intime – con un sospetto all’ombra di ogni frase. Flannery ama le vertigini e non ammette deroghe alla debolezza, ama ciò che dalla tenebra emerge come degno di riscatto: il tiepido, il tepore mondano, la fragilità ogivale degli affetti non la riguardano.
