Part 1
Part 3
Steve heaved a sigh of relief and rolled his eyes as he walked back into Scoops Ahoy.
“So should I add two more to the ‘You Suck’ side?” Robin asked, holding up her day’s tally board, pen at the ready to add another to the three marks already on it.
Steve quirked an eyebrow at her. “Why the hell would they count?”
Robin lifted her brow in disbelief. “Alright, if you say so.” She set the board down in the back and made the marks as Steve tried to be suave with the next female guest. She added another tally prematurely.
—
Eddie hurried outside, his heart racing at the uncomfortable encounter. He sat on a bench near the entrance and lit a cigarette, taking a long drag and sighing out the smoke. A group of kids passed by him. An X-Man comic was sticking out of the back of the bowl cut’s backpack, catching his attention.
“What movie do you guys want to see?” Lucas asked as they passed under the entryway arch to the Starcourt Mall.
“Well, if my plan works, then we can see whatever we want,” Max smirked as she walked backward through the automatic doors and into the crowded mall.
Mike sighed. “Are you going to share this plan with us?”
“You’ll find out soon enough.” She spun back around, her red hair dramatically flaring out as she did. “Steve got a job here, right?”
“Yeah.” Mike squinted. “What does he have to do with this?”
She smirked back at him briefly before guiding them to the food court. Will shrugged at Mike and Lucas as they followed her. They all chuckled when they saw Steve in the bright blue uniform.
“Seriously?” Mike laughed.
Will snickered. “It’s kind of cute.”
“That’s what makes it weird,” Lucas cringed.
“Oh, come on, just follow me.” Max grabbed Lucas’ hand and walked into the Ice Cream Parlor. She glanced around and didn’t see Steve, but hurried up to the counter as a customer walked away.
Robin looked up at them with a passive smile. “What can I get you?”
“Is Steve here?” Max asked simply.
Robin looked at the group of obviously unpopular kids and furrowed her brow in disbelief. “You’re here for Steve?”
“Yeah,” Max smiled.
“Uh, okay.” Robin shrugged and turned around. “Dingus, there are children here to see you.”
Mike didn’t appreciate being called a child and gave Robin a flat stare.
“What?” Steve said as he walked out of the back holding a drum of ice cream. “Oh!” His face perked when he saw the group.
“So, you do know them?” Robin glanced between Steve and the kids.
“Hell yeah.” Steve placed the drum in an empty slot in the display freezer and walked around the counter. “What are you guys doing here?” He gave Lucas and Mike quick one-armed hugs.
“Man, you look ridiculous,” Mike laughed.
“Don’t remind me,” Steve groaned. “If I want the job, I gotta wear the get-up.” He looked around. “Where’s Henderson?”
“He left for summer camp last week,” Will explained.
“Yeah, I think I remember him mentioning something about that.” Steve looked like he was in deep thought.
“Hey, Steve,” Max said happily, and Steve turned his attention to her. “Think we could use the back halls to get to the movie theater?”
“That’s your plan?” Lucas laughed.
Steve looked at her in surprise. “No, why would I let you do that?”
“I did it all the time in California,” she explained, mainly to Lucas. “I had a friend in a clothing store. She always let me in the back. I never had to pay for a movie, and I could bring all the snacks I wanted.” She looked back at Steve with an almost pathetic expression. “Please, Steve.”
The female pout, Steve’s mortal enemy. He closed his eyes and sighed a groan. “Fine.”
“Thank you!” Max said excitedly and gave him a hug.
“Yeah,” Steve shook his head and pat her back. “Let’s get this over with.” He opened the door to the backroom. He rushed to catch the door to the employee hallway before Max got to it. “But listen.” He said, blocking the doorway. “No one can hear about this, alright? I could lose my job. So don’t go telling your other friends that Steve at Scoops-”
“Dude,” Mike said, cutting him off. “We don’t have other friends. It’s us Dustin and El.”
“Right… regardless, no one can know, understand?” Steve pressed.
“We get it.” Max laughed impatiently.
“I swear, if anyone hears about this, you’re all dead.” Steve said firmly before pushing the door behind him open, letting the kids run past. “Follow the hall to the left.”
“You’re the best.” Lucas hit Steve on the shoulder as he hurried behind Max.
“Yeah man, you rock,” Mike said happily as he bounced past Steve.
“Thanks, Steve,” Will said genuinely, with a small nod and a bright smile.
Steve pat Will’s shoulder and watched him and the others hurry down the blank white hallway. He shook his head and sighed, closing the door behind him.

Flirting at the Mall 3
Chapter 3 out of 8
Steve and Eddie both work at Starcourt Mall, dancing around each other and flirting. When Steve finally manages to ask Eddie out, he gets kidnapped by Russians and misses their date. He shows up at Eddie’s house, drugged and beaten after Startcourt burned down to apologize and Eddie makes sure he’s okay, before they retry their date.
On AO3.
Ships: Steve x Eddie
Warnings: none
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Regular (Eddie POV)
It takes Eddie a week to built up the courage to go back to Scoops Ahoy. In that week, he is relentlessly bullied by his friends, who all tell him they want details and therefor he should put his heart on the line. The gossip hungry assholes.
They come bother him at work every day, trying to entice him to visit the ice cream shop again with them, but Eddie refuses every time. He has spend enough nights staring at his ceiling to come up with reasons why they’re all wrong and Steve hates him. And he knows that if he goes with them, they’ll embarrass him and Steve will think he’s weird.
Still, as much as Eddie adores king Steve, sweaty on the basketball court or with a smug smirk on his face and hair perfect, polo stretched over his muscles. Eddie is obsessed with dorky sailor Steve that he met in Scoops Ahoy.
There is something magnetizing about him. The way he’s nothing like the asshole Eddie would never make a move on no matter how hot he was. How he blushes and takes in stride the things Eddie said that would get him punched by every other jock.
So, despite what his brain has been trying to sell him, Eddie finds himself going back over to Scoops Ahoy, unable to stay away. He remembers Chris’ words as he justifies it to himself why he is being stupid.
However, when he gets to Scoops Ahoy, he sees Robin spot him, yell something, before Steve opens the window to the break room. Eddie isn’t sure, what he sees, but Steve slides over the counter in a smooth way that has Eddie swallowing as Steve smiles at Eddie as he enters the shop, Robin disappearing to the back.
The interaction they have is good. Eddie gets bolder and Steve flirts back. Actually flirts back, he gives a cute little smile when Eddie checks him out. He calls him a sweet guy! Eddie is so upset that he has to rush back to his own job, but Steve’s dorky ‘see you later alligator’ when he leaves is totally worth it.
It tides him over until the others come into Melody Records to try and bother him into going to Scoops Ahoy, only to find him licking out the cup.
Gareth spots it first, gasping in betrayal as he points to the cup and exclaims: “You went to get ice cream without us, you traitor.”
“Steve called me a sweet guy,” Eddie smiles, not replying to what Gareth said in any way, shape or form.
Luckily, he knows his friends and the at the mention of how it went, they all forget his betrayal to pester him about how it went. Sometimes he thinks he is friends with the knitting club instead of a metal band, but he loves them for it.
So, he regales his second interaction with Steve in great detail, ending with: “He was really nice, I think he might be serious in flirting, but I don’t want to assume and, like, get beat up or something, you know.”
“Become a regular,” Chris suggest. “Just make getting ice cream a thing you do on your break. Wait until he makes a proper move.”
“Yeah, if he likes you, I’m sure he will,” Gareth says. “He’s known for thinking with his dick.”
“Shut up,” Eddie tells Gareth, giving him a shove, while mentally filing away what Chris said. He has good suggestions. He should listen to Chris more often. “It might just be fun to him.”
“Better go along with that then,” Jeff shrugs. “I mean, it definitely sucks, but I don’t want to see you get hurt over Steve Harrington of all people. Let him make a move.”
Eddie nods, touched by the concern, but also a bit bummed out that this is the way this has to be. He is shaken out of his thoughts, by Gareth dramatically going: “I still can’t believe that our plan to laugh at Harrington over his sailor outfit turned into trying to set Eddie up with him.”
“Don’t you dare do anything,” Eddie quickly hisses, already envisioning the stupid plans his friends will undoubtedly come up with. He has seen their problem solving skills in DnD and he won’t trust them with something like this. Nu-uh, no thanks.
“Rude,” Gareth says, as Jeff assures him they won’t try anything.
They hang around for the rest of the day, Eddie is pretty sure his manager hates them, but he is rarely there and Eddie doesn’t care.
After his shift they get some food, before going to band practice together. They got a spot to play at the Hide Out on Tuesday and while they know only about 5 drunks will show up, they want to put on a great show. So, they’ve been putting in extra practice time.
However, the day after, he’s alone in the store again. No friends. He decides to take Chris’ words to heart. Eddie can become a regular at Scoops Ahoy. It’s summer. It’s hot… like Steve.
Whatever, he’s allowed to think that and he’s allowed to be a little pathetic, he thinks as he walks back over to Scoops Ahoy. Steve seemed to like his pathetic-ness anyway. He flirted back and Eddie is going to see how long they can keep it going.
When he arrives at Scoops Ahoy, he’s a little nervous, but Steve gives him a big smile as he does the spiel: “Welcome to Scoops Ahoy, I’m Steve and I’ll be your captain today. Are you ready to set sail on this ocean of flavor with me.”
“Howdy, sailor,” Eddie greets. “Can I request another of your recommendations?”
“Of course, Eddie,” Steve replies, eyes crinkling. “What are you in the mood for?”
Deciding to be a little daring, Eddie says: “I was thinking of being a sweet guy today.”
“Sure, I can give you something sweet,” Steve winks, giving Eddie half a heart attack with the words as he feels the blush explode on his cheeks.
And so, Eddie becomes a regular at Scoops Ahoy. On his breaks, he’ll wander over to the ice cream shop where Steve will be waiting for him with his dorky greeting. He stopped doing it once more, but Eddie questioned why, demanding to be treated like a good customer.
The fact that Steve picked it back up without question does something to Eddie. The stupid dorky greeting of captain Steve inviting him on an ocean of flavor does something to him. The combination off all of that with Steve in that sailor uniform does something to him. Everything about Steve does something to him.
Steve does so much for Eddie that he indeed comes in every day just to flirt with him. He asks Steve for recommendations and Steve will patiently let him taste all sorts of samples, smiling the whole way through, until Eddie finds something he likes enough to get a scoop off.
With a flavor chosen, Steve will bend over, letting Eddie ogle his ass in those shorts or his arm muscles as he scoops. Then Eddie gets his ice cream along with a Steve smile, employee discount and a flirty goodbye, before Eddie rushes back to his job with a teasing lick of his spoon.
At this point, Steve doesn’t even have to ask if he wants a cup or a cone.
His friends whine that they never get ice cream together and that Eddie is mean for not using his charms to get them all the employee discount. However, he knows it’s only teasing. His job stopped being interesting, so they’ve stopped coming by as often and the one time they did catch him before he could go alone, they teased him relentlessly after, claiming they couldn’t watch something so corny ever again in their lives.
God, his friends are dramatic assholes. But Eddie loves them. Loves how they took this in stride and never made him feel bad about having a big fat gay crush on Steve Harrington.
If anything, his friends are obsessed with getting him a date, thinking it’s the best thing ever. Every time he shows up for band practice, they first interrogate how his ice cream runs have been going so far, descending on him like a group of gossip hungry housewives.
It has happened only once that he came in when Steve was on break. Robin is behind the counter, smirking as she sees his face turn uncertain with her there. Vaguely he’s aware she must have noticed something and he thinks he has her pinned from when he was in band, but one could never be sure.
Still, not wanting to be too obvious about his disappointment that it isn’t Steve behind the counter, he ambles in, greeting her with: “Hi, Buckley.”
She gives him a one over, stifling her laugh, before calling to the back: “Dingus, your regular is here.”
They both hear a chair scraping and Robin winks at Eddie: “Be nice to my schmuck, Mr. Handkerchief,” both letting him know that she knows and that she’s cool and giving Eddie a weird semi-shovel talk.
Today is the second time he comes in to find Robin greeting him. It’s Eddie’s day off, yet he’s still here at the mall to get his ice cream. Which is a little pathetic. Especially, because Steve isn’t working today it seems.
Robin must notice something of that on his face, because she smiles: “Don’t worry, loverboy. He’s in. He’s taking his break right now, because his monsters are about to come in.”
“His monsters?” Eddie repeats, a pit forming in his stomach as he imagines a posse of jocks, who like pushing him around filling up the store.
“Ah, there they are!” Robin says, oblivious to his inner turmoil as she notices Steve’s monsters – whoever they are – over his shoulder.
With apprehension he turns around, but instead of the dreaded jock extravaganza there is a group of four middle schoolers. One girl with red hair and three nerdy looking boys. That- That is unexpected, Eddie isn’t going to lie, especially when Robin calls: “Hey, dingus, your children are here,” like she’d done when Eddie came in that other time.
“Again?” Steve asks exasperated, throwing open the window as the children reach the counter.
Curious to see where this goes, Eddie steps to the side to let the lanky brunet ding the bell loudly, looking into Steve’s eyes with a defiant look on his face. Then, he dings the bell again, making Steve glare at him.
Steve doesn’t scramble over the counter, like he’d done for Eddie, just pushes through the door with a resigned tiredness. He stands in front of the group and places his hands on his hips, making him look like a scolding mother, especially with the dishrag thrown over his shoulder. Eddie shouldn’t find it hot, but he does.
“What movie are you watching?” Steve asks, blocking there path and looking like he has no intention of moving if he doesn’t get an answer.
“Back to the Future,” the brown haired boy, who hadn’t been ringing the bell, answers.
Steve softens at the boy and asks him: “What rating does it have? You know Joyce doesn’t want you sneaking into any of the horror movies.”
Eddie now recognizes the boy as Will Byers, the kid that had gone missing in ‘83. He vaguely wonders how Steve knows the kid, but he’s mostly busy melting at how gentle Steve is being with him. How caring. Like every other thing about Steve, it does something to Eddie, seeing him all paternal.
“It’s PG,” the redhead rolls her eyes, obviously over Steve’s mothering.
“Yeah, we’re not idiots,” the other brunet says. “We’re not going to sneak into a dumb horror movie. Most of those are idiotic slashers anyway.”
“This one has fun science,” the black boy adds with a grin, the only thing that makes Steve relax his pose again after the other two riled it up.
“Alright, have fun,” Steve gives in, the guard to the kingdom stepping aside.
The kids don’t waste a second, bounding by him into the backroom. Eddie watches as Steve follows, vaguely hearing him call out: “If you tell anyone about this-”
“We’re dead,” four voices reply, like they’ve said it a hundred times before. Probably have, Eddie realizes. Because Steve has been sneaking snippy, nerdy middle schoolers into the movies for some reason. Middle schoolers he cares about.
He comes back to the counter, shaking his head at Robin as he sighs something about kids these days, before he spots Eddie. His eyes grow wide, before he breaks out into a big smile: “Hey, Eddie, welcome to Scoops Ahoy, I’m Steve and I’ll be your captain today. Are you ready to set sail on this ocean of flavor with me.”
Even in his surprise, he does the dorky greeting that Eddie loves so much. Eddie gives him a smile back and says: “Ahoy, fought off the hoard?” in reference to the kids.
Steve’s face is confused for a second, before he figures it out, then he huffs a laugh as he rolls his eyes. “More like lost to the hoard,” he tells Eddie. “Just can’t tell ‘em no, you know. I like the shitheads too much. But don’t tell them I said that.”
Eddie makes a sealing my lips motion as he winks: “Your secret is safe with me, sailor.” Then curiosity gets the better of them and he asks: “How do you even know those kids?”
“Oh, that,” Steve says, a combination of surprise and embarrassment at the question. He shrugs awkwardly and answers: “They’re Nancy’s younger brother and his friends. I started babysitting them when we were together, somehow I’m the one that got them in the divorce, you know.”
He laughs uncomfortably at the mention of his ex, a bit of hurt still in his voice. Eddie doesn’t know much about how that ended, but from the outside both had seemed to move on okay with Wheeler in Jonathan’s arms soon after and Steve befriending both like it was no issue. But looks can’t be everything and Eddie had seen the starts of a fight back at Tina’s party.
Still, Eddie isn’t about to dive into potential hurts of a break up with an ex from the boy he wants to seduce, so he gives a small chuckle and asks: “So, what flavors do they hate most? Can’t let them win all the time.”
Success, Steve laughs, less awkward this time and replies: “I think they have a collective dislike for pecan.”
“Well, can I try some pecan then, please,” Eddie grins, trying not to think how adorable it is that Steve knows that about the kids. He must really love them, even if he calls them shitheads and acts like he doesn’t. It’s cute.
“Course,” Steve replies easily, scooping a sample for him, knowing their game and that Eddie would try at least three flavors before settling on something.
“Thanks,” Eddie says, taking the small plastic spoon and licking the ice cream off it in a practically obscene manner for the establishment they’re in. However, it isn’t like anyone is watching them that closely and the way Steve’s eyes track the motion is definitely worth it every time.
Because he is free that day, he spends a little longer at the counter than usual, trying a few more flavors, but getting pecan in the end when a rush starts up.
He eats his ice cream in the store, pretty content to watch Steve sling ice cream and talk to customers. Steve is naturally charming, though not laying it on as thick as when he’s talking to Eddie, something that pleases him greatly.
When a few little kids come in, it’s adorable how Steve will lean over the counter and smile at them, being more enthusiastic about silly flavors and being patient as they try to decide on a flavor. He’ll even cheer a little if they’re allowed to get sprinkles from their parents, who will always smile gratefully at him for it.
Sadly, Eddie can’t keep watching Steve forever. He has a drug deal in the parking lot and then band practice. So, he has to leave before the rush ends, unable to speak more with Steve. He’s both saddened and glad by that. He loves talking to Steve, but he always has to remind himself that he is going to let Steve make the first move, a part of him still scared this is just a joke to Steve.
Maybe next time Steve will ask, he thinks, meeting Steve’s eyes as he goes and watching him do a dorky finger wave. How anyone ever thought Steve was cool, he doesn’t know.
King Steve never believed in the whole soulmate idea. He found it certifiably insane for someone to think that someone was made specifically for one person, it was baffling to him. Not only did the idea of commitment send a shockwave akin to the eight-point-zero magnitude earthquake through his body, but the idea of committing to one person blew his feeble little mind. How could someone become so in love with one person? Was it just that it is actually just socially acceptable to have affairs and simply never talk about it? He didn’t understand it. He couldn’t comprehend the rhotic lacing romance novels and movies. How could someone be so obsessed with someone that they devote their whole life to this one person? How could someone be so obsessed with someone that can be happy spending their whole life around someone? Because, certainly, his parents are not happy spending their whole lives together.
It all fell into place like puzzle pieces in the Summer 1985 when he first laid eyes on Y/N L/N. She worked in the Ladies’ Speciality store on the same floor as Scoops Ahoy. He would see her going to the food court, passing by the Parlour on her way to her shift or leaving for the day. He hadn’t even talked to her and he was infatuated. Not a word was spoken to him from her lips and he was being driven mad by the thought. It wasn’t until Y/N came in to get some ice cream with Robin (the two forming a friendship from working so close together) on her day off before they headed to the community pool that he spoke his first words to her.
From there, he was entranced. It all made sense to him. Every poem ever written about the obsession of love. Every line of literature that oozed with the sense of pining. He knew that he was made solely for her. To love her. To hold her. To simply be with her. It was his higher purpose. His calling. He was simply there to be hers. Despite his fumbling attempts at talking to her, Y/N found his dorkiness endearing enough to take a chance on him by making the first move - asking him to call her.
Unfortunately, that’s as far as Steve got before getting trapped in a storage room and plummeting into a Russian Underground Base. Her phone number in his passenger seat and the suggestive words of a date hanging in the air of his car from where she uttered them two nights ago. If he hadn’t been trapped and, consequently, kidnapped by Russians, there would be no way in hell Y/N would be at the Fourth of July party with some jock who didn’t even know her favourite ice cream flavour.
“I’m sorry,” Steve blinked, a dumb look on his face as he looked at Robin. Robin cocked her head to the side with a roll of her eyes, waiting for Steve to speak as she still held the payphone receiver in the air. “I must have heard you wrong,” He continued, speaking with a chuckle, hoping she was wrong. “‘Cause it sounded like you said that Y/N left you a voicemail saying she was going out on a date tonight-”
“It’s ‘cause of the giant flesh spider running rampant through Hawkins, isn’t it?” Dustin nodded as if he understood why Steve was so pale after hearing this news. Baffled, Steve and Robin both looked at him as he stood there, sweat staining through his graphic shirt.
Opening and closing his mouth like a fish, Steve shot a panicked look between Dustin and Robin. The three of them were off to the side, away from the rest of the scheming groups as Robin checked her voicemail, hoping to hear anything from Y/N to make sure she was okay. “No,” Steve nearly yelled, his voice impossibly high. “Well, now I’m worried about that.”
Robin, finally hanging up the phone, sighed. “She said he was taking her to the carnival,” Dread filled Steve. Obviously, Robin noticed since she continued on. “According to Hopper and Joyce, the carnival was untouched by the giant flesh spider-” She gave Dustin a pointed look for wording it that way. “And if this flesh spider is looking for this El girl, Y/N should be safe.”
“Again, not what I’m worried about,” Steve stressed, a hand coming up to run through his matted and grimy hair. Blood, sweat, and product weighed his normally fluffy hair down. “I’m more concerned about the fact that she’s out on a date with another guy because I was just trapped in a Russian Base for like three days!”
Dustin scoffed, causing Steve’s eyes to point angrily at him. “Calm down, Drama Queen. It was like 48 hours,” Dustin looked between Steve and Robin, shrinking slightly as he took in the context of the situation. “Which clearly felt like three days and jeopardised Steve’s chances with Y/N. I can clearly see that now.”
Silence enclosed around the three as they stood there. Robin ran the voicemail over in her head, trying to decipher how her new friend felt about this date knowing her feelings for the floppy haired new graduate that currently stood across from her. Dustin, trying to gauge the situation, looked between Robin and Steve before slowly starting to back up in an attempt to remove himself.
Steve. Steve was a ball of anxiety. So much so that this made Robin realise that Steve had actually changed. King Steve wouldn’t have cared. King Steve would have just shrugged it off and went off to find his new conquest. She could actually see the doubts and insecurities bubbling to the surface of his mind. “Wow. Nancy Wheeler ruined you, didn’t she?” Robin whispered, but she wasn’t one-hundred percent sure that the words met Steve’s ears. His mind seemed to be screaming too loud for him to hear anything else.
“I should’ve just manned up and asked her out,” Steve was beating himself up. Literally. Robin watched, a look of pure shock and bafflement on her freckled face, as he beat a closed fist into an opened hand. Just enough for his already swollen, bruised, and cut face to wince but not enough for it to attract anyone’s attention. “Now, she’s probably having the time of her life with this quarterback who will get a full ride to the University of Alabama or something-” He muttered to himself, the punches continuing, concerning Robin slightly.
“Woah, woah, woah,” Robin’s voice cracked slightly as she lunged forward. Gently, her hands grasped Steve’s wrists, keeping him from hitting his hand again. Steve, eyes watering in sheer insecurity, looked at her. Her heart broke for both her new found friends. She knew Y/N wasn’t having the time of her life. A, she hated stereotypical jocks and, if memory serves Robin right, this guy was the quintessential quarterback. B, she wasn’t with Steve - her long-standing crush. Something she admitted to Robin drunkenly. “Go to her.”
“What?” Steve’s voice was wobbly. It was soft.
“Go to her, Steve. You remember where she lives, you dropped her off that one time when her car wouldn’t start,” She started to explain. “Go to her, tell her how you feel. Lay it all at her feet.”
“W-what about everyone else?” He stammered, wide eyes looking towards the cluster of people. Robin waved her hand dismissively, making him look back at her. Her blue eyes were so confident and sure. They were compelling him to listen to her. Confirming that everything will be okay if he just listened to her.
They stared at each other, locked in a kind of communication only people destined to be best friends could achieve. “We can survive. We will survive.” She urged him despite the fact that she didn’t believe those words one bit. Swallowing thickly, Steve slowly nodded. Brown eyes casting over the cluster of people. Some he fought side-by-side with for the past two years, some who just joined the battle. They were all probably more capable than Steve at everything. At least, that’s what he tells himself.
Squaring his shoulders, he stood to his full height. “I’m going,” He spoke with a firm nod. The kind of nod that sealed some of the best and worst plans in history. “I’m going to her.” Just as the rubber sole of his converse slapped the pristine tile as he started to move towards the exit, unsure of how he’s going to get to Y/N’s place with no car, Hopper’s sharp whistle of his lips stopped him.
Seeing a Walkie-Talkie flying through the air, landing right in the scrambling hands of a nervous Dustin, disappointment and dread filled him. He wasn’t going to be able to slip away that easily. He barely listened as Hopper, Dustin, and Erica bickered about how it was best for them to communicate, hoping that whatever the solution was could spare him. His body buzzed with the need to tell Y/N everything. The need to bare his soul to her. The need to be near her - nay. To be hers.
The jingle of keys brought him from his locked in zone, letting him catch the keys Hopper was throwing him in time. “Steve’s in charge.” Those words weighted Steve’s soul down to the depths of the bowls of Hell for he knew this night was far from over.
“Come on,” Steve gruffed, his drive zeroing in. His sole focus was simply on beating this shit for another time and getting to Y/N as fast as he could. “Let’s kill these bastards.”
____
By the time it all fell silent again, rain was pelting down. Once the paramedic’s gave Steve the okay to leave and the firefighters were able to retrieve one of his keys from the Scoops backroom (thank god for cold rooms), he didn’t waste any time speeding off. He knew he should probably change his clothes from something that bore his blood, sweat, and tears, but he simply couldn’t waste another moment. That’s how, after a bout of reckless driving and a few near-misses, Steve was parking on the street, peering into the darkened driveway of Y/N L/N’s house.
A moment of hesitation fluttered through him. One thought was about the possibility of her not being home. The other one being the very likely possibility of her being asleep given the late hour. Another thought was about her parents not appreciating a beaten and bloody person professing their love for their daughter. However, a warm glow emitting from an upstairs window and her car being the only one parked in the driveway reassured him enough for him to muster the courage back up to get out of the car.
“You just survived two days in a Russian base and an interdimensional creature made of human flesh. You can do this.” He breathed, pumping himself up. Shaking his limbs out, his eyes zeroed in on the front door of her house. Just like a magnet, his body started to be pulled towards her, almost as if it were sure that it was meant to be around her. With a determination greater than the determination he felt to get out of the Russian base, he started to move quicker up her driveway until he was practically running up the rather long driveway, rain pelting his shirt and hair.
Standing there, his chest heaved as his back tingled with a mix of excitement and nerves. Before his consciousness could catch up, his finger was jabbing the doorbell repeatedly - much to his own horror. Despite not wanting to continuously ring the doorbell, his finger couldn’t seem to leave it alone until she pulled the door open. It was like his eyes were desperate to see her and his body was doing everything in its power to do just that.
“I’m coming, I’m coming.” Even with the muffled voice barely making it through the wooden front door and the sound of socked feet rushing down the stairs, his finger never ceased to stop pushing the doorbell. Part of him hoped that if the Jock did accompany her back to her place, his incessant doorbell ringing was annoying him. The large majority of him, however, was mortified that he couldn’t seem to stop ringing the damn doorbell. Suddenly, the door was pulled open, the burst of air from the movement making her hair wisp back from her face perfectly and Steve was stunned into a stupor, finger pressing on the button.
“Steve,” A look of shock crossed her face before it deepened once she caught the sight of his face in the glow of the entryway light. “Oh, my god, Steve!” She breathed out, concern lacing her voice as her hand came up to delicately cover her mouth as she took in his nearly swollen shut eye.
He couldn’t muster up any words. Hell, he couldn’t even take his finger off the doorbell. Hesitantly, Y/N reached out. He wasn’t sure if she was scared of him or scared to hurt him, but once her slightly cold fingers met the wet skin of his wrist, he blinked out of the trace he had been lulled into. “I needed to come see you,” His voice was much more hoarse than what it had been earlier. His throat was dry from the lack of water, but his body was becoming more and more exhausted as the seconds ticked by, but he felt energy shooting through him now that he stood in her presence. “Robin told me about your date with the Jock tonight and I couldn’t lose you just because I was kidnapped by Russians for two days.”
“You were what,” Y/N blinked, expression dropping from shocked to horrified. “Steve! You need to go to the hospital or the police station! Not to my house! This is serious-” She started fretting, her hands coming up, looking like they were going to lay on his face. His skin tingled in anticipation of her touch on him and his chest heaved as he tried to control his breathing, his eyes darkening, but her hands stilled halfway there. “Does it hurt?” She breathed, hands slightly shaking as her own adrenaline coursed through her.
Steve, with another surge of confidence, reached his own hands out to grab her wrists gently. Suddenly, as his fingers wrapped around the softness of her skin, he was all too aware that he hadn’t had a shower in two days and probably smelled horrible. On top of it, he was very much aware of the level of grime on his skin. But Y/N didn’t seem to care as her wrists seemed to sink into his hands, relief washing over her at the feel of his touch. “I’m fine. I got checked over by the paramedics, the Feds were there. I am fine,” He reassured her, noting the worry that still swam within the depths of her eyes. “But I needed to come see you. I would have ran here the second I escaped, but I was stopped.”
“Probably the paramedics stopped you because you were kidnapped, Steve,” She blinked and in a split second, guilt consumed him for not being able to tell her more. He was sure he would eventually tell her everything, but he didn’t want to scare her off. “But why did you need to see me so badly, you must be exhausted.” She furrowed her eyebrows, eyes flicking over his face.
“I needed to tell you how I feel, Y/N. Hearing that you were out with the Jock tonight, I-” He cut himself off, his throat swelling with emotion. “I couldn’t lose you. I couldn’t lose the person I was made for,” His words were like drops of blood dripping from his bleeding heart. “I can’t get enough of you, Y/N. I need to be around you and I’ve never understood the concept of soulmates until I saw you,” Shock crashed against Y/N like a tidal wave. Staring at the beaten and bruised boy, she could only manage to blink her eyes slowly as his words bleed with passion. “Y/N, there is no doubt in my mind that I was made solely to love you.”
Those words hung in the air like an anvil ready to squash Steve as his eyes burned into her shell-shocked ones. Her mouth hung open slightly as he could see her brain processing the words her ears just heard. Suddenly, she snapped back to reality, her jaw softly closing as she stood up, eyes as soft as a plush bed - making Steve want to lay within them for the rest of his life. “Oh Steve,” She breathed out, seemingly overwhelmed with the proclamation. Steve’s heart lurched, the anvil dropping an inch. An equally as soft smile as her eyes graced her lips, but it did little to ease Steve’s anxiety. “I thought you were never going to make a move. I thought you didn’t like me like that-”
Her words were cut off as Steve grabbed her face in his blood stained and, truthfully, grimy hands. In one motion, his lips nearly jumped on hers, kicking off a feverish kiss. His lips moved against her stunned ones as if she were the water he was so deprived of for two days. As if she were the thing he was derived from for so long. As if she were the air he needed in order to live.
He could feel the gentle touch of her fingertips ever so lightly touching his forearms as her lips seemed to match his speed, her body coming to life after falling into the shock of the sudden kiss. Goosebumps marked the trail of her fingertips as they made their way up to his hands. Soon, the warmth of her hands rested over his, just sitting there. Almost as if she was using them to tell if this was real or just a dream. Steve was worried about the same thing but the coldness of the pouring rain hitting his back as the wind blew it under the cover of her porch told him it was all reality.
Their lungs ached, Steve’s bruised ribs pulsed from his lungs beating against them, begging for air, not realising the lips he was attached to were (in fact) his air. Their chests swelled with warmth, both from their hearts becoming electrified with love and from the burning of their chests screaming from the lack of air. Lips became feverish in desperation as they both realised that, soon, they would have to pull away. Steve hated himself as he reluctantly pulled his lips back ever so slightly, just enough for both of them to suck in air, chests heaving - panting as if they had just ran a marathon.
Neither of them opened their eyes, feeling the laboured puffs of breath against their swollen lips as shockwaves of tingles shot through their bodies as if they were still kissing. “Nope,” Steve shook his head. “Not enough yet.” Y/N’s eyes fluttered open out of an act of confusion just in time for Steve’s lips to pounce back onto hers, this time her feet stumbling back from the force, his body crashing flush against hers. A squeak left her lips as she felt like she was going to fall backwards but his hands immediately left her cheeks, flying to her waist to pull her against him even more.
“Steve-” She pulled her mouth back slightly, words muffled by his lips still, but the risk of biting either of their tongues lowered, but he shushed her, ready to let his lungs explode if that meant he could keep kissing her. “Steve-” She tried again with a giggle, hands coming up to his chest to hold him back slightly. Finally opening their eyes, Y/N was stunned for a moment as she saw Steve. His lip now swollen, the cut on his lip re-opened and bleeding slightly. His eyes (or the eye that wasn’t swollen shut) nearly blown out as if he were high. Regaining her thoughts, she cocked her head to the side, eyes softening from the heated pools they were seconds ago. “Do you need a place to stay tonight?” She asked, having only caught enough information about his home life to know his parents were barely around and when they were, they barely met the standards of parents, let alone supportive and kind parents.
Suddenly, and if Steve wasn’t already sure, he knew he had finally found the place in the world he was looking for. He found the purpose of his life. He found the thing he would live and breathe. He found the thing he would even die for. “Actually, yeah.” He said almost sheepishly, realising his house key was on the set of keys the Russians took from him and his parents were away (shockingly). He felt scared, worried that she would think he came here and professed false feelings just so that he could have a place to sleep for the night.
His worries were eased with that soft smile slipping upon her swollen lips as she stepped back, Steve’s hands reluctantly letting go of her waist. “Come on in. I’ll even let you shower and sleep in my bed.” She winked, a giggle gracing the dimly lit entryway as she backed up, Steve following immediately - almost like she was luring him into a trance like state just with her beauty. In that moment, he knew he would never get enough of her and he will live everyday trying to give his everything to her.
June 27th, 1985.
A summer breeze gently creeps into Jonathan’s room, bringing the scent of dandelions and your childhood with it. It’s early evening and Jonathan hums to himself quietly, laying in his bed as he lazily skims through a comic he stole from you last week. You’re next to him as you carefully cut pieces of construction paper to glue onto the posterboard. Dustin comes home from camp in a few days and you want his welcome home banner to be perfect.
In the other room you hear the floorboards creak, followed by the sound of Joyce and Will laughing at whatever movie they’ve put on in the living room. Hearing their laughs makes you smile; it’s been so long since you’ve heard them laugh.
The tune that Jonathan hums now becomes a familiar one, and absent mindedly you begin to hum along with him. The cool summer night’s air encases the two of you, as if it senses that you want to freeze this moment forever. You’re in the Byers home, pressed against Jonathan’s side as you hum together an old song from when you were both fourteen and thought you had the world all figured out,
It’s nice, having this moment all to yourself with him. Moments alone with him have become few and far between, and it saddens you to think about.
There’s a new mall in town, Starcourt, and within a few months of it opening, Bookstrordinary has slowly been edging out of business. The entire town of Hawkins quickly fell in love with the mall, but with this love came the abandonment of downtown Hawkins.
Mrs. Waters can barely afford to have you work more than a few hours a day, so you’ve been spending your days visiting Nancy and Jonathan at their internship at the Hawkins Post or hanging at Scoops Ahoy to see Steve and Robin. While your friends have been lovely, you can’t swallow down the fear that you’ll lose your job by the end of summer.
As if somehow reading your thoughts, Jonathan puts down his comic and pokes your cheek. “Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask if you and Nance thought of anything else to try and save Bookstrordinary.”
You glue down a letter and try to distract yourself with the miniscule task. Nancy has been brainstorming a million ideas to try and help Mrs. Water, and while you appreciate her effort, it’s no use. Swallowing down even more dread, you shake your head at Jonathan. “No, nothing. Nancy offered to help organize a book drive to get more customers, but…”
“It wouldn’t be enough.” Jonathan finishes for you.
“Not nearly enough,” you sigh, desperately wanting to change the topic now. “But besides me possibly losing my job soon, how has yours been at the Hawkins Post?”
Now it’s Jonathan’s turn to sigh. “It’s… okay? I guess. I–I mean, definitely not what I expected it to be. The hours suck and the men are awful, but…” he shifts uncomfortably and looks away from you, embarrassed. “A job is a job.”
You rub his arm, understanding what he means. The Byers have always struggled with money, but ever since Will went missing two years ago and Jonathan lost his last job at the Hawk movie theater, it’s only gotten worse. They’ve tried hiding it, but last week you sneakily paid for Will’s ice cream at Scoops Ahoy while no one else was looking.
“I get it, bee.” You reassure him, hating that he even feels embarrassed in the first place.
Jonathan smiles and leans into your touch, appreciative of the fact that you know his family well enough by now to understand all he’s too ashamed to say. The two of you sit quietly for a few moments before he tries to lighten the mood with something else. “You excited for your birthday, bug?”
“Ugh,” you shake your head in disgust, which Jonathan laughs at. He knows you’ve never really liked your birthday. “Don’t remind me.”
“It’s in a few days, so you gotta suck it up.” Jonathan flicks your forehead and you swat your hand at him. “Besides, I bet $5 that Steve has some grand proposal planned for your birthday this year. He’s spent the entire summer drooling over you.”
His words make you blush furiously. “He has not–”
“He definitely has,” Jonathan tries to flick you again but you dodge, giggling. “I’m surprised he hasn’t publicly declared your love for you yet. I think there’s a betting pool going around the party.”
You gasp. “You’re lying!”
“Nope. Lucas and Max both lost last week, they bet mid June. Now it’s only me, Nancy, Will, and Dustin in the running.”
“What about Mike and El?”
“Mike didn’t want to encourage you dating Steve and the party agreed it felt unfair to have El gamble seeing as how she’s, ya know, still getting used to being in society.”
Despite yourself, you laugh. The idea is so bizarre and lovely, knowing how invested everyone is in your alleged love life, and it makes the worry you’ve been feeling fade away. “Can I join the pool? If I actually lose my job, I’ll need the money.”
Jonathan scoffs at you. “That goes against every gambling rule–”
“Please? I could be poor soon!”
“No, it’s not going to happen–”
“But–”
A knock on the window cuts you off. The two of you look up at the sound and find Nancy standing outside, waving and smiling. You hurry over to let her in, happy as always to see her. She’s been spending more and more nights at Jonathan’s, always sneaking in through the window.
It’s disgusting, and you couldn’t be happier for them.
Jonathan helps the girl climb through the window and greets her with a kiss to the forehead. “Hey, Nance.”
She smiles up at him with a shine in her eyes, and you know it’s time to leave. It’s getting late, anyways. You start to gather your banner supplies as you greet Nancy yourself. “Welcome back, Wheeler.”
“Hello to you too, Henderson.”
You wink at the girl and quickly ruffle Jonathan’s hair. “I’m going home, bee. My mom wants me to help prep Dustin’s room and I wanna have his banner done by tomorrow.”
“Bike home safe, please.” He says with a stern finger pointed at you.
Rolling your eyes, you give a mocking salute to Nancy and Jonathan. “Use protection, kids. I’m too young to be an aunt.”
Nancy gasps while Jonathan practically trips over his own two feet at your words, and you laugh. You leave them alone to compose themselves, closing the door to Jonathan shouting, “That wasn’t funny!”
You’re still giggling to yourself when you walk into the living room and see Joyce and Will sprawled on the couch. Their movie has just finished, the credits are rolling as you stand next to the TV and wave goodbye to them.
“You leaving so soon?” Joyce asks, surprised to even see you leave Jonathan’s room in the first place.
“Yeah, gotta finish up Dustin’s welcome home banner,” you hold up your supplies. Then, through the house’s thin walls, you all hear Nancy’s soft giggle. At the sound, you lean in close to Joyce and Will and dramatically whisper, “Plus, between the three of us, company came, so…”
Will’s eyes widen. “Yuck!”
Joyce chuckles, remembering how in love she was at Jonathan’s age back then. “Would I be a bad parent if I told Nancy she could just use the front door?”
“I don’t think so, but it’s fun watching them think they’re getting away with it.” You steal a piece of candy from the bowl Will had been eating out of, and he holds it up higher so that you can grab more. “Thanks, little bee.”
“You think it’s fun teasing Nancy and Jonathan now, Y/N, but when you’re the one sneaking in through a boy’s window one day…” Joyce shrugs, a twinkle in her eye. “You’ll understand.”
Will looks up at you with his own evil glint in his eyes, and before you can stop him, he turns to his mom and says, “I wonder how high Steve Harrington’s window is.”
You pretend to attack Will and he giggles as he flees his seat and runs to the other side of the living room. “Will Byers I will spit in your cookies–”
Joyce covers her mouth and gasps. “Y/N, are you hiding a boyfriend from me?”
Quickly you stop chasing after Will, terrified of the idea of the woman thinking you’d hide anything from her. “What? No! I’m not dating Steve–”
“Yet!” Will exclaims from across the room, but his retaliation is followed by a shriek as you chase after the kid again.
“If you keep this up, I’m telling Steve to stop letting y’all sneak into the movies!” You threaten as you chase the boy around the room.
Joyce watches in amusement, she’s never been able to take her eyes off of you when you’re with her boys. Will dodges a grab and you stumble, giving him just enough time to hide behind his mom’s armchair.
He pokes his head out at your threat, his eyes now uncertain. “You wouldn’t really tell Steve that, right?”
Catching your breath, you collapse onto the couch and shake your head at him. “No, little bee. I wouldn’t.”
You’d never do that to Will. He’s been so keen on spending as much time as possible with the party this summer, spending each and every moment planning DnD campaigns and biking all over Hawkins to spend mere seconds together. Will has spent all summer trying as hard as possible to be a kid again because so much of his childhood was stolen by Upside Down.
Will slowly gets up from behind the armchair and sits next to you, relieved. “Okay, good. We wanna see a movie tomorrow night and I already promised everyone you’d get Steve to let us in. That would’ve sucked.”
You and Joyce laugh at the boy’s response, and it feels so good to have this moment with the two of them. You allow it to wash over you for a second, the Byers home has always had such a comforting effect on you, before getting up and gathering your things once more. “I really should go, though. My mom is waiting.”
Joyce and Will say goodbye and tell you to be safe on your way home, and it warms something within you. As you bike down their driveway home, you inhale the summer night’s air and wonder, days before you turn seventeen, how much longer you have left of just this: being a little kid going home after a long day.
–
When you get home, Tews greets you with an angry meow.
The cat had been a Christmas gift for your mom from you and Dustin, seeing as how you accidentally killed Mews. Your mom had cried seeing the little kitten, and had cried even harder when your brother suggested the stupid name “Tews.”
But it stuck, and now Tews glares at you as you take your time feeding her.
In Dustin’s room you can hear your mom rustling around, frantically cleaning the place as if it currently isn’t the cleanest it’s ever been since the kid has been gone all month. After you feed Tews, you make your way over to your brother’s room to help with cleaning.
A few hours later, you’re laying in bed, exhausted from your long day. Dustin’s banner sits on your desk, right next to the phone that resides in the corner. Yawning, you glance at the clock, but when you see the time, you smile.
The phone rings.
“Right on time, honey.”
“Aren’t I always, angel?” Steve’s voice soothes your aching bones, his words like honey, the very thing you’ve come to associate with him.
Phone calls have become more and more common between you and Steve. You’re not sure when this tradition formed, but when you aren’t at Scoops and he isn’t at your house infiltrating your family, you’re on the phone with one another.
Hearing Steve’s voice puts you at ease, and it wasn’t long before you started calling each other before bed every night.
“How was your day?” You ask him, spinning the phone’s cable around your finger as you lay in bed.
Steve lets out a dramatic groan. “I swear, after you left today, Robin intentionally amped up her taunts. It’s like you’re her buffer or something. The second you leave,” you hear him snap his fingers, “she turns against me!”
“Robin would never do that.” Your voice is monotone as you say this, which only makes Steve groan dramatically once more. Robin would most definitely do that; you both know this.
“You two are the worst together.”
“Yeah, well,” you pull your blankets up to your chin and readjust into a comfier position. Your eyes feel heavy and Steve’s voice settles over your body. “Prepare for more pain tomorrow night. Will and the party have grand plans to sneak into yet another movie.”
Steve sighs. “Those kids are manipulating your power over me to get what they want.”
“You call it manipulation, I call it bonding.”
Another sigh escapes Steve. “You’re going to be the death of me.”
“And yet you stay.” You tease.
“And yet I stay.”
You bite back a smile; you can almost perfectly envision Steve laying in his own bed, phone pressed to his ear with his hair messy and eyes half lidded as he talks to you. You wish, more than anything, that you could be there with him right now; instead, you fall asleep to the sound of Steve’s voice, slightly raspy from his own exhaustion.
–
The next day you wake up to an empty house. Your mom has been spending her summer at Hawkin’s pool, like all the moms in town now do, to admire Billy at his new job.
It grosses you out to no end, and when your mom comes home some days swearing that Billy winked at her, you have to swallow down the phantom pain of his fingers wrapping around your windpipe.
By the time you get to work, Downtown Hawkins, as always, is a ghost town.
It’s been this way ever since Starcourt opened, and as you park your bike and lock it up, you can’t help but be unnerved by how quiet everything is. It was only a few years ago that you had to scream at a crowd of onlookers when Jonathan and Joyce had had that fight when they had found Will’s body in the quarry.
Now, walking slowly towards the front doors of Bookstrordinary, all you hear is silence in the once lively area. There are posters scattered throughout the old town, but they’re worn from the sunlight and torn from the weather. It’s a depressing sight.
Mrs. Waters greets you kindly when you walk in. “Hello, dear.”
“Hi, Mrs. Waters.” You give her a quick peck on the cheek as you quickly swipe your card to clock in. The bookstore is empty. “Any new shipments today?”
The old woman shakes her head forelonly. “Afraid not. We still haven’t sold last month’s shipment.”
You duck your head down and curse. This is the second shipment you weren’t able to sell. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Waters.”
“Oh, don’t be!” She walks over to you, her wrist shakes as she uses her cane. She has aged so much these last few years. “I’ve owned this store for thirty years, dear. I’m just happy that I can give you and Alex a job before you kids go off to college. Besides, it’s given me something to do these last few years without my husband…”
The woman’s eyes glaze over, something that has started to happen more and more now, and you grab her arm gently and give her a little shake. “Hey, Mrs. Waters. You still with me?”
She blinks, looks around in a confused daze, before breaking into her old smile once more. “Of course I am! Now, sort some books while I ward off those debt collectors with this cane.”
Despite the gravity of the situation, you can’t help but laugh at Mrs. Waters as she waves her cane around madly and gives you a wink. She hobbles back to her office and leaves you alone with the books and the ghost of Downtown Hawkins.
Only two customers come in during your four hour shift, and by midday Mrs. Waters releases you so that she can give Alex a few hours of work as well. She’s trying her best to keep you both hired for as long as she can, so she splits your hours. What she doesn’t know is that Alex now has a job at Hawkins’ pool and only comes into work because he just can’t bear to quit, and neither can you.
You bike to the mall, sad and needing a pick me up. Jonathan’s teasing from last night echoes in your head. How could you possibly think about your birthday when your boss is slowly losing both her mind and her business?
At the mall, your feet unconsciously take you to Scoops as they always do. This has become your favorite part of your dreary days: going to Scoops after work. The smell of ice cream greets you as you walk into the shop.
Robin sees you first and waves excitedly from the register. “Y/N!”
“It’s me!” You run up to the counter and lean over it to squeeze the girl into a tight hug.
There’s a loud crash from the backroom and just as you’ve pulled away from Robin, Steve bursts through the doors and leaps over the counter to join in on the hug. “Thank God you’re here, Robin was about to make me clean the tables.”
You giggle while Robin scoffs, pulling away. “It’s your turn, dingus.”
Steve, still hugging you from behind, hums. He begins to rock you back and forth in his arms, which only makes you giggle more, while he pretends to think about what the girl has said. “Nope, don’t remember it being my turn.”
Robin gives you a pleading look to back her up, and you reluctantly slide your arms over Steve’s and release his grip. He groans in complaint at the loss of your touch, and you roll your eyes at him as you turn around to now face him. “C’mon, let’s go wipe the tables so dear Robin can man the register in peace.”
Steve groans even louder now as Robin cheers, and you snatch the rag from his pocket and begin to wipe down the tables. He follows eventually, moaning and groaning as he cleans next to you, and you hit your hip against his. “Hey, at least you’re getting paid for this.”
“I give you free ice cream!” He argues, pieces of his hair falling out of his adorably dorky sailor’s hat that he has to wear for this job. It’s incredibly endearing, and as he hunches over to scrub at a particularly dirty table, his thighs strain against his probably too short shorts and you can’t help but stare at them. As you admire this spectacular show, Steve catches you and flicks your nose. “Quit ogling me and get back to your free labor, angel.”
“I wasn’t ogling, I was simply admiring.”
Robin gags from behind the register. “I can hear you guys, you know!”
You and Steve both stick your tongues out at her before going back to work.
The hours pass by quickly after that. The midday rush of tweens and teens alike infiltrate Scoops, so Steve helps Robin fling ice cream while you get comfortable in your designated booth in the corner. You’ve hidden a supply of comics underneath one of the booth’s cushions and you spend your time catching up on the latest Spider-Man arc.
You’re so engrossed in what you’re reading that you don’t notice a body slide into the booth next to you until the person speaks.
“Spider-Man, huh? Heard he’s a pretty cool guy.”
Startled by the stranger’s voice, you almost drop your comic in alarm. When you see that it’s just Jason Carver sitting next to you, you place a hand to your chest and inhale quickly, trying to settle your rapid heartbeat. “Christ, you scared me.”
“Sorry!” He genuinely looks apologetic, so you wearily set down your comic and straighten up.
You’ve never spoken to Jason before, even though you’ve been in the same classes ever since eighth grade. He’s always ran with the popular crowd, being a jock and all, and you’ve always ran with Jonathan. However, despite being on the basketball team, Jason has never been mean to either of you, so you figure it’s safe to offer him your attention.
“Can I ask why you’re here?” You cock your head at him, feeling your hair fall over your shoulders.
Jason smiles at you, in a sort of cute and charming way. “Stopped by to get my little sister some ice cream,” he points to a little girl next to him, who waves at you, and you wave back. “Then I saw you sitting here all alone reading one of my favorite comics, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to say hi to such a pretty girl.”
You blush at his bold words. You’ve never received such attention from anyone before, at least not anyone normal thanks to Billy, and you’re not really sure why Jason seems to be paying attention to you now. He’s had years to do this.
Jason sees your sudden shyness and chuckles. He stands up and offers you his hand. “Why don’t I buy you some ice cream, maybe you could help me show my sister around the mall–” Steve’s shoulder collides roughly into the teen’s, causing him to stumble into his sister’s ice cream cone and get chocolate ice cream all over the front of his pants. Jason looks up at Steve and balls his fists in anger. “What the fuck, Harrington?”
You quickly cover the little girl’s ears, though she giggles.
Steve shrugs as he looks at Jason. “Sorry, man. Didn’t see you there.” Then, he turns to you, and offers his own hand. “Anyways, I think it’s time for your daily free ice cream, angel.”
Jason’s eyes narrow as you accept Steve’s hand and spare him an apologetic glance. Before you leave, you dig some cash out of your overalls and hand them to him. “For your sister’s new ice cream cone.”
He sighs and accepts the money. Jason knows that Steve is still holding your hand as he stands behind you, but he has nothing else to lose at this point. He takes a deep breath and shakes his head. “I didn’t stand a chance, did I?”
Steve twirls you with your interlocked hands, causing you to giggle, and guides you to the ice cream counter. As he leaves, shouts behind him, “Not at all, buddy!”
You know you should feel bad, but Steve twirls you again and all you can do is giggle breathlessly as Jason Carver walks out of Scoops with his sister in tow.
–
Later that night the mall is busier than ever, and as you’re gossiping with Robin about Steve ruining Jason’s pants, you’re interrupted by Mike’s grubby little hand repeatedly hitting the bell.
Seems it’s time for their movie.
You flick the kid’s head, which Lucas, Max, and Will snicker at. “Enough!”
“Ow, Y/N!”
“Thanks,” Robin sends you an appreciative smile before she calls towards the backroom, “Dingus, your children are here!”
Within seconds, Steve opens the sliding windows and sighs when he sees Mike and the party. “Again? Seriously?”
“I warned you.” You say, shrugging at his annoyance. “Let the kids have some fun.”
Mike rings the bell again. “Do what Y/N says.”
Steve sighs in defeat and motions for the kids to follow him behind the counter. “Fine, but only because I’m nice, not because Y/N said so.”
“Right.” Everyone says, not at all believing him, which Steve chooses to ignore.
You all follow him through the back entrance of the mall. Checking to make sure the coast is clear, Steve waves the kids inside. “I swear, if anybody hears about this–”
“We’re dead.” The kids all respond, voices monotone with annoyance after hearing this threat a million times.
However, before they all leave, Will gently tugs at your hand to get your attention. “Are you coming with?”
You want to say yes, but then you catch Steve’s eyes and he silently pleads with you to stay, and you know you can’t tell him no. Squeezing Will’s hand, you shake your head. “Sorry, little bee. I promise I will next time, though.”
Mike scoffs in disgust, disappointed in you. Your relationship with Steve has always confused him, and you’ve only gotten closer to the teen since Dustin left for camp. He pities what the boy will think when he comes back to his sister all lovey-dovey with an idiot like Steve Harrington.
Once the kids leave, you go back into Scoops with Steve and settle into your booth once more. Grabbing your comic, you flip to where you left off before looking up at the teen and saying, “you have me for another hour. I can’t be out late tonight, Dustin comes home tomorrow and I promised Mike I’d be up at like seven to let everyone in.”
Steve salutes you and hops back behind his counter to help Robin with some customers. You smile at his antics and go back to reading. A few minutes pass, Spider-Man has just kissed MJ, before the lights above you start to flicker and then go out completely.
Everyone in the mall gasps and murmurs in a slight panic as they’re thrown into darkness. The hair on your arms stands up; you no longer trust lights that flicker. Robin catches your eye and gives you an odd look when she sees the fear on your face.
“Scared of the dark, Y/N?” She teases, not understanding what you really fear: what lies below Hawkins.
“That’s weird,” Steve mumbles to himself as he goes over to the light switch. He starts to flip the switch repeatedly, and you roll your eyes at him. He’s an idiot sometimes.
“That isn’t gonna work, dingus.” Robin says, looking over at you once more as if to silently ask, why are you attracted to him?
You shake your head at her as Steve continues to flip the switch, now only quickening his movements. He stares Robin down as if to challenge her. “Oh, really?”
Nothing happens, because contrary to what Steve may believe, he can’t fix what is likely (and what you hope) is simply a blackout from the summer heat. He flicks the lightswitch a few more times before the generators kick back on and Scoops Ahoy is once again lit up.
Steve raises his eyebrows at Robin and smirks at her, pleased. “See? Let there be light.”
You drop your head to the table, now also questioning why you’re attracted to the guy.
However, when it’s time to head home and Steve walks with you to your bike outside, he kisses your cheek and wishes you a good night; you know that this is the reason you’ve fallen for him: his kindness. With his kiss lingering on your cheek, you bike home.
–
When Steve gets back from saying goodbye to you, he’s met with a nosey Robin.
She stands against the counter with her arms crossed. There aren’t any more customers in the shop, they closed about ten minutes ago, and Steve was really looking forward to driving home and taking off his stupid uniform.
Robin, however, clearly has other plans.
“What did I do now?” He asks her, not daring to take any step closer.
“Why haven’t you asked Y/N out yet?” Steve’s eyes widen at the question and Robin knows she’s got him cornered. “I’ve spent hours with you guys, and it’s driving me insane that you haven’t manned up!”
“‘Manned up’?” Steve sputters out, completely offended.
Robin throws her arms out in front of her. “Yes! I mean, it’s so obvious that you’re in love with her and that she’s in love with you. Just… Just get it over with!”
Blushing, Steve slumps against the wall and closes his eyes. As much as it pains him to admit it, he knows that Robin is right. “It’s… complicated.”
“Well, go on.” The girl now hops on the counter and sits on it. “Explain it to me, then.”
“Y/N used to be in love with…” Steve stops, unsure if you’d want him to be telling Robin this. “Someone.”
She rolls her eyes. “Everyone knows she was in love with that Byers kid.”
“Right.” He clears his throat, uncomfortable with the reminder that at one point, everyone in Hawkins truly believed you were destined for Jonathan. “Well as I’m sure you know… He got with Nancy, who–uh, I had been with.”
“Okay, so what?”
“I–” Steve isn’t sure what Robin doesn’t understand. “I needed… time?”
Robin frowns. “After Nancy dumped you?”
“Technically I dumped her–”
“What does this have to do with Y/N?” Robin presses.
Steve groans and rubs at his eyes. He’s tired and wants to go home to call you and go to bed with your soft voice in his head. “Y/N understood that the breakup with Nancy hurt, and–well. She told me she’d wait for me. I guess. While I figured my shit out.”
Robin thinks this over for a minute. “Okay, I think I can understand that, but–wait, when did this all happen again?”
“... December.” He closes his eyes, bracing himself for the girl’s inevitable anger.
“Harrington!”
There it is.
“I know, okay?” Steve tugs at his hair in frustration. “I’m over Nancy, I’ve been over her since at least April, but… But what–what if Y/N has lost interest in me now? What if–maybe I made her wait too long, or–or what if she thinks she’s just Nancy’s replacement?”
Steve is rambling now, months of his anxious and insecure thoughts now spilling out. “I mean, it’d kill me if–if I ever made her feel second to anyone! She’s… She’s incredible and–God, I don’t even know why she likes me and I’ve spent this entire summer trying to–I don’t know… Figure out how to confess my feelings to her in a way that matters, ya know? Like, a grand proposal to show her that I’m crazy about her.”
Robin is silent for several minutes after Steve’s frantic spiel, he’s panting by the time he’s done. Then, finally, she says, “Dude… You’re way overthinking this.”
Steve winces. “I mean, her birthday is in a few days. I can… I can ask her to be my girlfriend then. That’s romantic, right?”
“You’re hopeless.”
–
“Dusty comes home today!” Your mom’s shrill voice wakes you up as she prances around the house getting ready. You roll over in bed and stretch, tired but excited to see your brother again after a month of being apart.
You get out of bed and press a kiss to your mother’s cheek before telling her to drive safe. Glancing at the clock, you see that you have just enough time to shower before the party arrives. The entire thing had been Mike’s plan and you were more than happy to help arrange everything.
After you’ve gotten ready, you hear three swift knocks on your front door and you answer it. “Right on time, Wheeler.”
Mike salutes you as he and the others walk in. El gives you a hug and Max high fives you as the boys start setting up the robots. The six of you get started on the plan: place all the robots in Dustin’s room, all hidden in various corners, and then use El’s powers to control them and guide him to the living room so that you all can surprise him.
It’s a brilliant plan, one only a Wheeler could think of.
It takes you, Lucas, Mike, and Will to successfully hang up Dustin’s banner that took you all week to make. There’s cursing, yelling, a few trips, and multiple snickers from El and Max while the four of you struggle to hang the thing, but eventually you manage to secure the banner into place in the living room.
Just as you’ve finished hanging it up, you hear your mom’s car pull into the driveway and you quickly shove the kids into a closet. “Quick! That’s my mom’s car, hide!”
Lucas yelps and Max punches his shoulder to shut him up, but thankfully you manage to close the closet door just in time before Dustin walks in. You hide behind the couch, quiet so as not to be seen by him, and carefully listen for his footsteps to retreat down the hall and into his room.
Once he’s gone, you scramble towards the closet and open the door. “Okay, he’s in his room, time for step two.”
“Did we all really have to hide in the closet?” Will asks, rubbing at his shoulder that had been shoved into a hanger.
“Yes, now shush and hide behind the wall so he doesn’t see you.” You order, and the kids all listen. Once you’re all pressed against the wall, you nod at El. “Ready?”
“Ready.” She responds, closing her eyes. Static fills the air and you hear one of the robots turn on in Dustin’s room. Then the other one turns on, then the monkey, and soon all the toys have been activated by El’s powers.
Mike pokes his head around the corner. “Okay, now start leading the robots here.”
Blood slowly begins to drip from El’s nose and you feel bad that she’s doing this, but the kids all look excited, and you’d be lying if you said you weren’t a little giddy yourself. The noise from the robots grows louder as El draws them out from the room and towards you guys.
You hear Dustin’s uncertain voice following behind them. “It’s just a dream… You’re dreaming.”
Then Mike whispers to El, “Now!”
The robots all die in the center of your living room and slowly everyone starts to creep out from behind the wall. Lucas is holding his own poster he made and you hand everyone party noisemakers. Dustin is investigating the robots and doesn’t hear you stalk up behind him. Max silently counts to three, and on her signal, you all blow your party noisemakers and surprise him.
Dustin screams and immediately holds up his Farrah Fawcett spray, blinding Lucas as he continuously sprays it. The poor boy screams as well and the rest of the kids back away, out of the line of fire. However, as soon as your momentary shock wears off, you manage to snatch the hairspray out of your brother’s hand and save Lucas.
“Why is Farrah Fawcett your weapon of choice?” You exclaim, shoving a still screaming Lucas towards your kitchen so that you flush the spray out of his eyes. Max joins, rubbing soothing circles into the boy’s back.
“Why would you scare me like that after the hell we went through this year?” Dustin shouts back at you, clutching at his chest.
Dustin’s words make you stop for a moment and think. Huh. He has a point. “Yeah, we should’ve thought about that, honestly.”
“A little help here?” Lucas brings the attention back to him and you apologize, helping him once more to flush his eyes out. As you and Max tend to him, Dustin tells the others to follow him to his room so he can show them what he built at camp.
Max splashes some more water in Lucas’ eyes. “Better?”
The boy stands up and wipes his face, though he’s careful not to touch his eyes. “Still stings.”
“I feel like I should call someone…” You mumble, Your first aid knowledge doesn’t include Farrah Fawcett in the eyes.
Lucas blinks a few times and looks around. He leans in closer to Max’s face and for a moment you’re scared he’ll kiss her, but instead he chooses to be an idiot. “Is that a new zit?”
You wince and Max’s eyes widen in disbelief. She looks at you and you both seem to come to the same agreement: grabbing the back of Lucas’ neck, the two of you shove his face back into the water. “What is wrong with you?”
Lucas screams again and you leave Max to deal with him, laughing to yourself as you go see whatever creation your brother has brought home. You love Lucas, you do, but you have no idea how Max puts up with his boyish antics.
Inside Dustin’s room, you find him and the others hunched over a collection of wires and metal pieces. You walk in and join them.
“I would like you to meet Cerebro.” Dustin presents his creation, but you honestly have no idea what it’s supposed to be.
You squint at it. “It’s… Pretty?”
“What exactly are we looking at here?” Mike asks, unimpressed.
“An unassembled, one-of-a-kind, battery powered radio tower!” Dustin explains with a proud smile on his face.
A beat of silence passes before Will carefully asks, “So… It’s a ham radio?”
Dustin’s excitement only grows. “The Cadillac of radios.”
“Still not understanding, buddy.” You now voice, usually always lost when it comes to the more AV stuff the party likes.
“This baby carries a crystal-clear connection over vast differences.” Your brother clarifies for you, and you nod along. “I’m talking North Pole to South. I can talk to my girlfriend whenever and wherever I choose.”
You, Mike, El, and Will all look at each other in shock at the word that has just left Dustin’s mouth. “Girlfriend?”
Your brother nods, looking all smug, and you immediately berate him with a million questions. “What’s her name, where is she from, how long have you been dating. Tell me everything, now!”
“Relax, dear sister. Her name is Suzie, and I’ll explain in a second. We can even talk to her if you guys help me set Cerebro up on Weathertop hill.”
You’re the first to start grabbing all the supplies, giddy and eager to hear more about your baby brother’s girlfriend. It’s almost too good to be true. Mike, Will, and El follow along and soon you’re all holding materials for Cerebro as you follow Dustin out of the house.
As you all leave, Mike starts asking questions again. “Wait, so her name is Suzie?”
Dustin nods. “Suzie, with a ‘z’. She’s from Utah.”
“People from Utah actually exist?” You ask, which the others laugh at.
“Girls go to science camp?” Will asks.
You give him a stern look. “Anyone can go to science camp, Will.”
“What Y/N said,” Dustin continues explaining his girlfriend. “And Suzie does, she’s a genius.”
“Is she cute?” Mike can’t believe what he’s hearing.
“Think Phoebe Cates, only better.”
You re-adjust one of the poles for Cerebro in your arms. “Can we focus on her being smart instead? I think she sounds lovely.”
From the kitchen, Max sees the four of you open the front door as she helps Lucas with his eyes. “What’s going on?”
“We’re going to talk to Dustin’s girlfriend.” Will informs them.
Lucas whips his head up from the sink as he and Max exclaim, “Girlfriend?”
“I know, right?” You say, motioning them to follow.
–
“Alrighty, one scoop of chocolate. That’s a buck twenty-five.” Steve hands the ice cream cone to the girl he’s currently serving. She’s pretty enough, and when he notices her Purdue shirt, he can’t help but say something about it. “Ooh, Purdue! Fancy.”
The girl smiles and hands Steve her change. “Yeah, I’m excited.”
“Yeah, you know… I–I considered it. Purdue.” He types the code into the register and places the change inside. “But then I was like, you know what? I really think I need some real life experience, you know, before I hit college. See what it’s like.”
The girl and the friend she’s with exchange weird glances, and Steve knows he’s rambling like an idiot. “Uh, what I mean is… You’re girls, right? How would the two of you like to be asked out by a guy?”
“I’m sorry?” Purdue girl asks, looking at her friend, creeped out.
The cash register begins to beep at him and Steve hits it a few times to shut it up. “Sorry, uh… Anyways, say you’ve seen this guy every day for like, months, and feelings are shared, you know, as they are. Then time passes and the guy never makes the move because he’s, well, he’s an idiot–”
“Yeah, totally.” Purdue girl interrupts him and her friend giggles.
“Exactly, so… This was, like, so fun. This little chat. Anyways, what do you think? How would you want the guy to ask you out?” Steve puts on his most charming smile, hoping that the girls will say that maybe he isn’t crazy for waiting so long to ask you out. As he hands them their change, he drops part of it. “Oh, sorry about that. Uh…”
“Yeah, we wouldn’t wanna be asked out.” Purdue girl says as her friend snorts.
“Sure, but I mean, it’s complicated, you know? And–”
Purdue girl interrupts him once more. “No, I’m sorry, but it sounds like you missed your chance and you’re like, really weird.”
“But the guy isn’t me!” Steve shouts as the two girls leave, only embarrassing himself even more. He sighs, closes his eyes, and wonders how he got here.
“And another one bites the dust.” Robin announces from behind him. He turns around and watches as she marks another tally underneath the you suck column of her whiteboard. Next to it is the column you rule, which currently has zero marks. “You are oh-for-six, Popeye.”
Steve crosses his arms. “Yeah, I can count.”
“You know that means you suck and that Y/N isn’t the problem here, you are, right?”
“Yup, I can read, too.” Steve swallows down his annoyance, he knows he’s only done this to himself.
“Since when?”
“It’s this stupid hat,” Steve complains, as if this is the only appropriate answer. “I’m telling you, it’s making everyone think I’m some pathetic guy who can’t ask a girl out.”
Robin leans against the window. “Yeah, company policy is the reason that you’re an idiot for not asking out Y/N.” She thinks for a moment and tries to offer the teen some advice. “Ya know, it’s a crazy idea, but have you considered telling the truth?”
“What? That I’m hopelessly in love with her? Sure, I’m such a catch who couldn’t even get into Tech and whose douchebag dad is trying to teach a lesson, now making three bucks an hour with no future.” Steve laughs at himself. “A catch who, by the way, could’ve been hers back in December had he not been a complete moron? What a great truth.”
Robin frowns, now feeling bad for making him feel this way. While she doesn’t understand everything, she gets that Steve has had a difficult few months. Taking pity on him, she points out some girls approaching and tries to lighten his mood. “Hey, twelve o’clock! Maybe they’ll see your side of things.”
Steve turns around and sees the girls as well. “Shit, okay. Okay, I can do this! I’m going in.” He quickly snatches the sailor hat from his head and tosses it to Robin. “Screw company policy, I’m getting advice about Y/N one way or another.”
For a second, Robin has hope for him, but then he opens his Scoops Ahoy greeting way too loud and then immediately starts to ramble about you, and she sighs in defeat and marks another tally underneath the you suck column.
Hiking up a giant, grassy hill in ninety degree heat while hauling heavy equipment for a giant radio that your brother built to talk to his alleged long distance girlfriend definitely wasn’t what you had in mind today. In fact, you mourn the fact that you aren’t working today.
You’re only here to hear about Dustin’s girlfriend, honestly.
“Aren’t we high enough?” Lucas pants, voicing what everyone else is thinking.
Dustin shakes his head. “Cerebro works best at a hundred meters.”
“You know, I’m pretty sure people in Utah have telephones.” Max quips.
You wipe sweat from your brow and cringe, you feel disgusting. “Max, you’ve always been so wise.”
“Suzie’s Mormon.” Says Dustin, and you almost trip over a rock.
“You’re dating a Mormon?”
Lucas talks over you. “Oh, shit. She doesn’t have electricity?”
“Oh, that’s the Amish.” Max corrects him, and you get flashbacks to when you had to correct Steve about Nazis and Germans.
Will frowns at you. “What are Mormons?”
“Scary people–”
Dustin interrupts you. “Super religious white people. They have electricity and cars and stuff, but… Since I’m not Mormon, her parents would never approve.”
“Please don’t become Mormon,” you beg, dripping even more sweat. “I need someone sane in our family.”
“I won’t,” Dustin reassures you, though he has a far off look in his eyes. “But it’s all a bit Shakespearean, don’t you think?”
“Shakespearean?” Max laughs and you also can’t help but giggle.
Dustin doesn’t let your teasing deter him from reminiscing, though. “Yeah, like Romeo and Juliet.”
“They both die, Dustin.” It’s important to you that he knows this.
“But they were also star crossed lovers.”
“Who killed themselves.”
Below, Mike shouts to the rest of you, “Hey, guys!”
You all turn and you frown when you see just how far he and El are, both of them empty handed and dry as a daisy in the summer heat. When Mike sees that he has all of your attention, he taps at his watch. “This is fun and all, but, uh…”
“I have to go home.” El announces, her arm intertwined through Mike’s.
Dustin points towards the top of the hill no less than a few yards away. “We’re almost there.”
“Sorry, man. Curfew.” Mike shrugs, he isn’t really sorry and you all know it. He then grabs El’s hand and they descend down the hill, giggling and enamored with one another.
With a gleeful laugh, El says goodbye. “Good luck!”
Dustin looks down at his watch. “Curfew at four?”
You’re startled by the time, having assumed it was at least closer to six. Hopper may be an overprotective grump of a man, but not even he is crazy enough to enact a curfew for El at four in the afternoon. “That… Doesn’t sound real.”
“They’re lying.” Lucas explains, frustrated.
“It’s been like this all summer.” Will says bitterly, something that you take note of.
Max nudges you with her shoulder. “I think it’s romantic.”
“It’s gross!” Will voices again.
You bite your lip. “I don’t know, it’s your guys’ last summer before high school and…”
“It’s bullshit.” Dustin finishes for you, hurt in his voice. “I just got home.”
You flick him. “Language! But… I agree.”
Dustin watches with annoyance as Mike and El walk down the hill hand in hand. While he’s incredibly hurt that they’ve ditched him after being gone for a month, he remembers what Steve has taught him. People can suck, but there’s nothing he can do about it. “Well, their loss, right? Onwards and upwards, Suzie awaits!”
Max and Lucas groan at the idea of continuing the hike while you admire your brother’s perseverance. You’re proud of him for not letting Mike and El ruin his plans with the others. He’s excited to be home, and you’re more than happy to go along with whatever schemes he has planned.
You’re about to follow the others up the hill when you realize that Will hasn’t joined. You turn around and see that he has his hand around the back of his neck as he stands there, frozen. Then, he turns and faces Hawkins, stumbling back a bit as he does so, and you watch with a frown on your face.
“Hey, little bee, are you okay?” You gently place a hand on his shoulder, which seems to break him of whatever spell he’d been under.
“I’m fine,” he lies, and you don’t at all believe him. Will looks uneasy, as if he’s just seen a ghost. A part of you begins to worry, but you don’t push him. For all you know, it could be about Mike and his growing distance from the others.
“Well, c’mon, then.” You grab Will’s hand and together you ascend the rest of the hill.
At the top, Dustin drops his bag and sighs. “Made it!”
“Yeah, only took five hours,” Max pants out, stumbling the final few steps up the hill.
You collapse onto the ground and fight to catch your breath. “I run almost every morning. I think I lost a lung back there.”
“Why couldn’t we just play DnD?” Will collapses next to you.
Lucas grabs the flask of water, and as you struggle to get air into your lungs, you watch as he chugs the remaining water without a care in the world. Max watches as well, annoyed, and once again you pity Lucas. He’s such a boy.
Building the radio takes longer than expected. After your short five minute break, Dusin puts you all to work. There’s a million pieces to the thing and your fingers ache from screwing bolts into slots and extending poles. The sun has begun to set when you finally push the giant radio into an upright position. It’s easily fifteen feet high, and it’s an impressive sight that you can’t deny.
“Not bad, Dustin.” You admit, walking around Cerebro in awe.
“Ready to meet my love?” He asks everyone, and you all sit down next to him and eagerly await. Dustin switches the radio on. “Suzie, this is Dustin. Do you copy? Over.”
No one answers. All you hear is radio feedback.
Dustin scratches his nose nervously. “One sec. She’s probably… She’s still there.” Again, no one answers, and he ducks his head down in embarrassment. “Suzie… This is Dustin, do you copy? Over.”
More radio static follows in the absence of Suzie’s response.
You wince, despite trying to appear supportive. You can’t help it, this is embarrassing for your brother. While you don’t doubt that he has a girlfriend, you admit that this doesn’t look good for him. A long distance girlfriend who is hot and smart and magically needs a radio to communicate with? Unlikely.
“I’m sure she’s there,” Dustin tries to explain to you guys, now even more embarrassed. “It’s dinner time, and she’s busy…”
“Yeah, sure.” Lucas tries to be supportive and play along, which you appreciate him immensely for. Max nods as well, but Will just stands there silent.
“Maybe try again?” You encourage, trying to be nice.
Dustin nods and tries once more to contact Suzie, and it goes on like this for a while. He radios, no one answers, and eventually you and everyone else lay down in the grass as you wait for nothing.
Almost an hour passes and the crickets begin to chirp as the sun goes down and the moon comes up. Dustin is still trying to reach Suzie, but Max finally has enough. “Dustin, come on! She’s not there.”
“She’s there, alright? She’ll pick up.”
“Dustin…” You sigh, unsure how to tell him that you also want to leave. You had plans with Steve tonight, he invited you over to watch a movie and you should’ve left ten minutes ago.
Will lifts his head up from the grass. “Maybe Cerebro doesn’t work.”
“Or maybe Suzie doesn’t exist.” Lucas argues.
Dustin gasps. “She exists!”
“She’s a genius and she’s hotter than Phoebe Cates? No girl is that perfect.”
You pinch the bridge of your nose at Lucas’ words and wait for Max’s inevitable offense. He truly, deeply, is such a boy. As predicted, Max sits up and looks down at him with annoyance. “Is that so?”
Lucas shuffles up in panic, now realizing too late what he’s said. “I mean–you’re perfect! I mean, like, perfect–in your own way, in your own, uh, special way!”
“Lucas,” you hit his shoulder. “Stop talking, dude.”
Max laughs, pleased with herself. “Relax, I was teasing. I’m obviously perfect and Dustin is obviously lying.”
“Okay, no,” you now sit up. “He isn’t lying, it’s just a very unfortunate circumstance.”
Max doesn’t listen and instead offers Lucas her hand to help him up so that they can leave. “Come on, Don Juan.”
“Where are you going?” Dustin follows, not understanding yet what’s happening.
“Home,” Max huffs, before remembering that you’re there, too. “Bye, Y/N!”
“Bye,” you wave at them weakly, knowing that this will only upset your brother further as she and Lucas slowly head home.
Dustin stands next to you now. “Well, guess it’s just us and Byers, Y/N,”
Will now stands up and awkwardly avoids your brother’s gaze. “Um… It’s late. Sorry. Maybe tomorrow we can play DnD, or something fun, like we used to?”
Dustin clenches his jaw. You know he’s close to tears, and it breaks your heart to watch. You stand up and rest your arm around him as he responds to Will. “Yeah, sure.”
“Welcome home,” Will says sadly before he starts to walk down the hill as well.
You anxiously watch as he leaves. “Be careful, please!”
“I will!” He reassures you, knowing that you’re still terrified of losing him again.
As you watch Will, Dustin whispers to himself, “Yeah, welcome home.”
His words break your heart even more. Forgetting about your anxiety over Will, you wrap both arms around your brother and hug him. He had been so excited earlier to be home and see all his friends after a month of being away. You understand that the kids are all growing up, but you had always hoped that they’d grow together, not apart.
“You still have all of July and August,” you try to comfort Dustin, desperately hoping that you aren’t lying to both him and yourself. “I’m sure they’ll come around.”
Suddenly the radio attached to Cerebro switches on and Dustin pushes you off of him so that he can get to the radio in time. He stumbles over his feet and trips, and you watch with amusement and curiosity.
He manages to finally untangle himself from the radio and answers. “Suzie, Suzie, is that you?”
You sit down next to Dustin and lean in close to the radio, excited to finally meet your brother’s girlfriend. Instead, you hear what sounds like a foreign language. It’s distinct, slightly muffled, but you know what it is. “Is that…”
“Russian.” Dustin whispers.
Everything changes, then.
–
You force Dustin to go home immediately. He wants to stay, see if he can find any more hidden messages, but you refuse. He’s elated, talking a mile a minute as you bike home, theorizing every possible answer as to why you heard Russian in Hawkins, Indiana.
“Dustin!” You yell at him, terrified that someone could be listening. “Not here, okay?”
He deflates, but pedals home alongside you.
You’re terrified as you bike home, a million thoughts are running through your head. You don’t at all like what any of this could mean; you’ve had enough sketchy government facilities and secret government agencies to last you a fucking lifetime.
When you get home, you order Dustin to go to bed.
“But Y/N, we’ve got to tell someone about this–”
“Tomorrow, okay? Just, please, Dustin.” You’re exhausted and confused and overwhelmed.
Your brother senses that you’re at your limit and reluctantly backs down. “Fine, but can we at least tell Steve tomorrow?”
Hearing Steve’s name puts something at ease within you. Tomorrow, you’ll go to Scoops with Dustin and ask Steve what he thinks about all of this. Comforted by the fact that you now have a plan forming, you begin to calm down. “I promise we’ll tell him tomorrow, okay?”
Dustin nods and heads to his room, wishing you a good night. When you hear his door click shut, you slowly head to your own room. You’re terrified, and there’s only one thing you want to do to lessen the fear that scratches at your throat. After crawling into bed, you call Steve.
He answers immediately. “Y/N? Is everything okay?”
“I’m fine,” you breathe out, his voice like an exhale of a summer’s day. “I… I’m sorry I missed our movie night.”
Steve laughs softly. “Angel, I’m just happy you’re okay. I was getting worried there.”
You close your eyes. “It’s been a weird day.”
“Did something happen?” Steve senses that there’s something you aren’t telling him, which worries him.
“Dustin… He may have found something, but I just–I don’t want to talk about it just yet. I… I don’t want to jinx it,” you squeeze your eyes tight and will away the fear you feel. “I–I’m just, I’m so exhausted, you know?”
“Y/N, are you in danger–”
“No,” you dispel any fear that Steve may feel. “I promise I’m okay, I just really need to hear your voice right now, okay? Can you just talk to me, please?”
“Of course I can.” Steve agrees without any questions asked, and you love how he trusts you enough to do this.
Exhaling the remaining fear, you allow the warmth from Steve to hold you through the night. “Thank you, honey.”
“Anytime, angel. You know that.”
And you do.
Steve begins telling you a story from today, how he dropped an ice cream cone on a toddler and enraged the mom, and you fall asleep that night to the sound of his voice over the phone.
This commercial means so much to me. Steve and Robin both being so awkward on camera but in different ways. Steve's tired of filming but Robin is trying to make sure she did it right. The fact that they had to stand there in silence after saying their lines because the reply is a voice over. The fact that it's possible they had to do this multiple times.
Then there's the canon implications. Is this commercial a canonical event? If so, would that make Steve and Robin local celebrities? Would people point at them and just say "Scoops Ahoy" if that's what they know them from? Did they get paid to do the commercial? Does anyone in the party know they did a commercial, and did they ever see it while watching TV? I have so many questions.
Scoops Ahoy Stobin commercial you will always be famous.
Eddie: Welcome to the club?
Nancy: You're actually late to the party but thanks nonetheless.
Eddie Munson celebrates two birthdays every year: the day he was actually born, December 19th, and the day he woke up in the hospital, April 8th. Funny enough, the latter is usually a bigger celebration. Family and friends that no longer exist in separate groups come together with all of Eddie’s foods and drinks, small gifts and sometimes, a bigger gift from the collective.
Try as they might, they’ve yet to top the Metallica tickets.
But today is Eddie’s original birthday. December 19th— the one that’s usually swallowed up by the holidays, the one that really doesn’t mean all that much to him because, well, compared to waking up after saving the world, why would it? The last few celebrations have been tight-knit, mostly just himself, Wayne, and Steve either at Wayne’s trailer or the tiny little apartment Steve and Eddie managed to find for themselves.
This year, it’s just the two of them with no one to blame but Mother Nature. A blizzard drops nearly three feet of snow over northeastern Indiana and no one is going anywhere, least of all Wayne whose getting up there in years. We'll make up for it later, Eddie assures him when he calls with a stream of apologies.
How can he complain though? Wayne will make up for it, he’s snowed in with the love of his life, and the apartment smells like his favorite pasta sauce, the one he knows takes Steve hours to simmer. So no, he’s not disappointed. Not in the slightest.
“Sorry your day got snowed out,” Steve sighs, plopping down onto the couch and draping an arm along the back of the couch, toying with the ends of Eddie’s hair. “I did get you a surprise though.”
Eddie’s brow furrows, knitting tightly above his nose. There’s been no mail for two days, and their apartment doesn’t exactly lend itself to keeping secrets. “A surprise? What kinda surprise?”
“Well,” Steve smirks, confident in the way that always makes something stir in Eddie’s chest. “It’s not a birthday without a cake.”
He’s so fucking lost.
“A cake? We’ve been snowed in since Sunday and I would’ve smelled you baking in here. Also, I would’ve tasted it already, or at least demanded to lick the spoon so— wait, what are you doing?”
Steve stands up and walks around the back of the couch, just behind Eddie. “Just close your eyes, okay? Or do I need to blindfold you?”
He can hear Steve’s smug grin without even seeing his face and now it’s not just his chest stirring. Eddie shifts I’m his seat.
“No, no I can just close my eyes. Put a pin in the blindfold idea though.“
With his eyes closed, all he can do is imagine what the rustling is behind him, scenarios that will never compare to the sight he sees when Steve gives him the all clear.
“Okay,” Steve says, his voice now coming from directly in front of Eddie. “Open.”
Very funny, brain, he thinks. My entire life since the demobats has to have been just one long, final burst of dopamine before kicking the bucket because there’s absolutely no way this is fucking real.
Steve’s standing in front of him, shirtless, in nothing but some of the tightest shorts he’s seen Steve wear since the time he blindly walked into Scoops Ahoy asking for rum raisin and instead, got a fucking show. They’re dark maroon in hue with the word Cake printed in white script across the entirety of Steve’s ass. Moles litter his skin from the base of his neck down the flesh of his thighs, and the small indentation in his lower back is highlighted by the low waistband. Barely noticeable cuts in the sides expose what looks like black lace detailing.
“Holy shit,” Eddie groans, unable to stop himself from reaching out and touching the soft, cotton material.
“Yeah?” Steve looks over his shoulder with a knowing smile. “You like it?”
Eddie fingers trace the font and he doesn’t even dare to blink. If it is a coma dream, he doesn’t want to risk waking up. “Do I like it? If I ever say no to that, Steve, take me into a field and off me because I’ve been replaced by the body snatchers.”
Steve laughs and Eddie pulls him in closer, one hand on Steve’s hip and the other working its way up Steve’s thigh and beneath the fabric.
“Y’know,” Eddie starts, swallowing with a dry mouth around the lump in his throat. “There’s just one little problem with this birthday cake.”
“What?” Steve looks back over his shoulder again, this time confused.
He gives his right cheek a light tap, just enough to relish in the way the plush flesh moves. “It’s not finished.”
“Oh yeah? What’s it need?”
“You know I need my cakes frosted. And c’mon,” he leans forward and presses a kiss to Steve’s hairy thigh, just below the hem of the shorts. “Where’s the candle?”
Steve turns with a teasing grimace. “Did you just compare your dick to a candle?”
“Sure did. Is it working?” He smiles with his bottom lip between his teeth as he stands and places both hands in Steve’s hips.
“I can’t believe it, but yeah, it kinda is.” Steve’s eyes flicker down to Eddie’s lips and back up.
Eddie can barely get his thoughts in order, placing both hands on either side of Steve’s face and kissing him between words.
“Best.” He kisses his forehead. “Birthday.” He kisses his nose. “Ever.” He kisses his lips.
They make their way back to the bedroom and no one can blame him for leaving Steve’s ass littered in purpling hickies and love bites.
It’s a cake, after all.
Flirting at the Mall 4
Chapter 4 out of 8
Steve and Eddie both work at Starcourt Mall, dancing around each other and flirting. When Steve finally manages to ask Eddie out, he gets kidnapped by Russians and misses their date. He shows up at Eddie’s house, drugged and beaten after Startcourt burned down to apologize and Eddie makes sure he’s okay, before they retry their date.
On AO3.
Ships: Steve x Eddie
Warnings: none
~~~~~~~~~~
Melody Records (Steve POV)
Robin has been hounding him to try and find Eddie’s place of employment ever since they found out he works at the mall. But Steve doesn’t want to come across as a creepy stalker, to which Robin always argues that with that logic Eddie would be a creepy stalker.
Naturally, Steve disagrees with that. Eddie found his place of employment by accident and it’s really cute that he comes by nearly every day to try ice cream and talk with Steve. It’s perhaps even a little embarrassing how much Steve adores it whenever Eddie comes by. Robin often makes fun of him and how he perks up when Eddie comes into Scoops Ahoy.
So, no, he doesn’t think what Eddie does is stalker-ish and therefor he doesn’t think what he is currently doing, is stalker-ish.
Well, maybe a little.
Is it really that wrong to use the shopping trip with the kids to stake out some stores and see if Eddie works there? Like in the big picture is that really so bad? Steve hopes Eddie won’t think so, if he manages to find the other boy.
The kids aren’t the happiest he’s with them, all thinking themselves too old for a babysitter and it isn’t like they haven’t been in the mall by themselves. However, Dustin is almost returning from camp and they need supplies for their little prank. And they think Steve is the perfect person to pay for all that. Of course. So, he’s been grudgingly allowed to come along.
Currently the little band of dorks are still arguing about if they need an air horn or if they should get a tape with screaming music or something. Steve isn’t going to involve himself in it, just looks around the mall he’s been at nearly every single day, but hasn’t really explored.
“Fine,” he hears Mike throw up his hands. “We can first look for tapes, but if there isn’t anything good, we’ll go get an air horn.”
“Fine,” Lucas agrees smugly.
“You dipshits finally decided?” Steve asks, knowing the answer and getting a huff from Mike and nods from the others as they take off to a record store Steve hasn’t been to before.
Behind the counter is a girl with a blonde ponytail and a pretty smile. Any other day, she would have been Steve’s type and he’d use the moment to flirt with her while the kids run through the store. However, Eddie has been all that’s on his mind lately, so he just gives her a polite smile and flips through a few tapes.
He gets distracted by Mike loudly complaining: “I told you all, we can’t know if it’s any good based of the cover. This is a waste of time.”
“No, it isn’t,” Lucas shoots back. And Steve realizes why he’s so adamant about it when he spots Max going through a few Kate Bush and Madonna tapes.
Steve smiles to himself and decides to back Lucas up, especially when he sees Will looking anxiously between his two friends. “You can always just ask an employee, Wheeler.”
“Yeah, Mike,” Lucas says, before going up to the counter and asking the girl: “What’s the loudest, most annoying and screaming music you have?”
She looks up from her magazine with an annoyed look and says: “Don’t ask me that. Wait, here and I’ll call Eddie.”
Steve is pretty sure, he has never looked up so fast as he watches her call out to the back stating that some kids want to know about his music with a little distaste in her voice. Mentally he makes a note that he doesn’t like this girl very much, however, he’s distracted by Eddie coming out of the backroom with a smile as he exclaims: “Who here seeks my music wisdom?”
“We, apparently,” Mike answers, still sounding annoyed. The kid would rather be spending more time with El.
Not that Steve cares about Mike right now. He wants to say something, get Eddie’s eyes on him, but he also doesn’t want to make it weird or be disappointed when Eddie doesn’t reply as he usually does at Scoops Ahoy.
He needn’t have worried, though. Eddie spots him in the middle of the gaggle of middle schoolers and lights up. Steve’s heart flips at that. Then Eddie says: “Hey there, brave seafarer. Finally left your ship?”
“Uh, yeah,” Steve replies, knowing that he’s blushing and that the kids are looking at him weird, but unable to help it. “Can’t find treasure by staying aboard, right?”
That was pretty smooth, Steve is proud of that, especially when Eddie’s cheeks pinken at the implication that he is said treasure. But he recovers quickly and smiles: “Well then, how can I help you on your quest?”
“We’re looking for annoying, loud music,” Mike interrupts and Steve wants to face palm and hide away, because Mike has just insulted Eddie’s music taste pretty badly.
Eddie takes it in stride, luckily, just saying: “I can’t help you with annoying, but loud I can certainly do. Metal section is over here. Why do you need it, if you don’t like it?”
“Our friend is coming home from summer camp,” Lucas informs Eddie. “We’re going to scare him when he comes back.”
“I still think an air horn will be better,” Mike huffs.
“Whoa, are you planning on blasting it in his ear?” Eddie stops rummaging through the tapes to look at them, brow furrowed. The kids nod. “You should get party horns, not air horns. Those are way too loud for these kind of things. You could give your friend serious hearing damage.”
“We can?” Will asks nervously.
“I told you music was better,” Lucas immediately grins.
“Yeah, but party horns are way cheaper than a tape,” Max argues. “When it was tapes or air horn price was similar.”
“Whatever, Steve’s paying anyway,” Mike shrugs.
“Oi,” Steve speaks up at that, cuffing the back of his head. “I don’t get paid enough for this attitude towards my money. You’re buying party horns.”
The kids all immediately start pouting and Steve hates seeing them unhappy. Besides, he’s sure that if he grovels and begs, his parents might be kind enough to not let him starve to death while they’re away on business, so he compromises: “You can still pick a tape, if you wanna waste it on getting something you don’t like to scare Dustin, that’s on you.”
At that the kids light up and set off into the store, looking for music they actually like. Steve sighs and rubs his forehead, wondering why he keeps doing this.
“That was sweet,” Eddie says, snapping Steve’s attention towards him. He hadn’t necessarily forgotten about the man, he’d just focused on the kids.
“Oh, yeah, it’s- uhm, it’s nothing really,” he says awkwardly, rubbing the back of his head. He knows where Eddie lives, sat in the car once while Tommy bought drugs. He know their lives aren’t the same. But he doesn’t want to come across as a rich asshole, so he shrugs: “I’m lucky I only have to pay for groceries with my salary, not bills. And if it makes them happy, you know.”
“You really care about them, don’t you?” Eddie asks, sounding genuinely interested and not weirded out, like most of Steve’s other failed dates after Nance.
“Yeah, they’re good kids,” Steve smiles. “Annoying assholes from time to time, but that’s never truly malicious, just them being thirteen.”
“Truly mama Stevie,” Eddie jokes, before winking: “But who rubs your feet at the end of a hard day with the kids, huh? Do you get your TLC?”
“Shut up,” Steve says, his cheeks heating up at the comment.
“You’re cute when you blush,” Eddie tells him, pinching his cheeks. Then he swiftly changes topics, making a big flourish with his arm as he says: “But, you are in my abode now. So, welcome to Melody Records, while I might not be a captain, how can I, a humble jester, amuse you today, sailor?”
The dramatics make Steve giggle, a sound he didn’t use to make before Eddie. “Not much of a sailor today,” he comments after, relieved that he puts effort into his outfits no matter what and Eddie can see him in something better than that stupid, dorky uniform.
“You are in spirit,” Eddie assures him.
“Gee, thanks,” Steve laughs.
“So, any tapes for you, or just spoiling the kids today?” Eddie asks and it shouldn’t make Steve feel so hot that Eddie is talking about him like a parent, but it does.
To obfuscate the fact that it gets to him, he quickly distracts with: “No, I can look at some tapes. I need to expand my horizons beyond the top 40 according to Robin.”
“A wise lady,” Eddie agrees, nodding sagely, before a wild grin breaks out: “Luckily for you, we are already near the best music,” and he gestures to the metal section he’d been rooting through for the kids before they abandoned them in favor of other music.
“So, what’s good in this then?” Steve asks.
Eddie’s eyes light up and he warns him: “You should not ask me that, if you do not want to be stuck here for the next hour, big boy.”
“I mean, I have time, come on, tell me,” Steve replies, not minding. Eddie looks so fucking excited to talk about it and it’s just cute. Plus, Steve is interested in what Eddie likes. He wants to know. He wants to built the mental image of the boy in his head as best he can. Of course he wants to listen to Eddie talk about metal music.
And the cute way Eddie bounces a slightly up and down at the okay to ramble would be worth it for Steve in itself.
However, that doesn’t compare to Eddie actually talking. He talks with his whole body, hands gesturing with long slender fingers plucking tapes from the stacks to show Steve. Not to mention his voice, the way he drags out certain sounds, uses language like it’s his playground and twists words in a deep, hypnotizing voice.
Steve doesn’t follow much of the music lingo and band names he has never heard before and struggles to remember. But he has fun. It’s just nice to talk to Eddie. It’s new to have people his own age he likes talking to other than Robin.
Eddie is also very passionate and Steve is a little obsessed with how he practically vibrates in place as he says: “It’s- I know how this sounds, but I swear to you, this is real music. It hits you in your bones. It’s good to have some music in your bones.”
“I believe you,” Steve says, unable to stop his smile. Then he asks: “What’s the best music to get into all this? I mean, I assume there’s a way to ease into it?”
“Would you- would you like to try some metal?” Eddie asks in return, sounding as if he can’t believe it.
“Yeah, I mean, if that’s okay?” Steve answers, suddenly a bit shy about it. “You make it sound cool and I wanna try more, you know, broaden my horizons.”
“I can help you broaden your horizons, Stevie,” Eddie grins, the comment making Steve’s heart flutter. “Of course it’s okay. Here, I’ll find you some good beginner metal. What kind of music do you like best?”
“Oh, uhm,” Steve blushes, knowing that what he’s about to admit is a little embarrassing. “I like Tears for Fears and Queen, you know, and maybe also ABBA and Wham! Or Madonna.”
“God, pretty boy,” Eddie laughs. “That is not a metal basis, but don’t you worry, I’ll work my magic,” as he finishes, he wiggles his fingers in a playful manner that should be silly, but has Steve swallowing as he looks at them.
Eddie either doesn’t notice or graciously ignores it as he goes through the tapes again.
Steve wants to keep staring at Eddie, however, he’s distracted by Max bumping into him. He nearly jumps in the air, having completely forgotten the kids were there. But he saves himself with a: “Hi, red, found something?”
“Yeah, we all did,” she holds up a stack of tapes. “The others went ahead to the craft store for the banner supplies, but I told them I’d wait until you were done. But it was taking kind of long.” She flicks her eyes to Eddie with a knowing smile.
And Steve feels his stomach turn to led. The playful flirty mood disappearing as he starts to rethink everything, wondering if they’re being too obvious and who else could have seen.
Max must notice something, because she says: “You’re not being obvious to anyone who doesn’t know you. It’s nice to see you smile like that again. I won’t tell.”
“Thanks, Max,” he says softly, throwing an arm around her shoulder and pulling her to his side for a second with a squeeze, before letting her go.
Then she gives him a sly smile and holds up another tape: “I actually found two tapes, you know. I haven’t decided yet, I love them both a lot. What do you think?”
She knows exactly what she’s doing and Steve informs her of that as he plucks both tapes out of her hand. In turn her grin turns even more mischievous. He acts annoyed, but he doesn’t mind. Max is one of his favorite kids and with her home life and Billy, he tries to be the best older brother he can be for her. If that means buying her two tapes, so be it.
“Here you go,” Eddie’s voice snaps him back and he looks at the other boy. He’s smiling at Steve and Max, looking fond and amused. Steve tries not to think about how he probably heard her little manipulation.
“Thanks,” Steve says, taking the tape from Eddie and studying it.
Eddie explains: “It’s Animalize from KISS. They have some good stuff and are easy to get into, more on the glam rock side of the spectrum. I could give you some Dio or Iron Maiden, but they’re more guitar-y and I think AC/DC or Mötorhead might be a bit too scream-y to start with.”
“Maybe I can try them later,” Steve suggest, wanting to ask Eddie out, suggest they can listen to it together. However, Max’s appearance has made him aware of how visible they are, so he chickens out once again.
“Yeah, you can come in whenever,” Eddie tells him with a smile, before ringing him up, plugging in the employee discount like Steve always does for him.
Then they say their goodbyes and Steve follows Max out of the store to join the other shitheads, but his mind is on Eddie in his element back at Melody Records. The metal record he got burns in his pocket. God, he’s so far gone for that boy.
Later he tells Robin about the whole encounter and she exclaims: “I can’t believe you didn’t ask him out, dingus,” as she puts another strike on the board.
“I swear I wanted to,” Steve whines.
“You just chickened out like a pussy,” Robin fills in.
“This is so unfair,” Steve pouts. “It’s not like you’re out there asking your crush out. Hell, you haven’t even told me who you like.”
“And I’m not going to either,” Robin says. “Besides, my crush isn’t even into me. Yours is. Relish in it, Harrington.”
“I can feel out the vibes if you tell me who it is,” Steve suggest as a bribe.
Robin raises a brow, before replying: “I tell you what. If you ask Eddie out on a date and it goes well, I will tell you who my crush is.”
Steve considers it for a moment, then says: “Is just asking him out not enough?”
“No, I have to believe in romance first,” Robin tells him.
“You don’t believe in romance?” Steve asks.
“Fuck you, I do. It just hasn’t worked out for me yet,” Robin shrugs. “Now stop giving me those sad eyes and go clean the tables, loverboy.”
~~
A/N:
One of the reasons this fic is getting longer than expected is because I really can’t write Steve without Robin or his kids. They belong, okay xp
(Also don’t come hating on me for the music. I listen to some metal, but I’m not too heavy into the scene, just mostly things I grew up with and KISS is one of my mom’s fave bands, so this is for her lmao)

come a little closer
REQUEST → dear nonny, SUMMER BLURB PARTY ❝ 💬 prompt 58, “do i make you nervous?” where steve and reader are more acquaintances and have mutual friends? – tina invites you to a party while her parents are out of town, but aren’t you too old for this shit? and then you run into steve and, god you wished you’d said no • +18 ( a little king!steve, a little spice, a little frenemies and a little fluff • steve harrington x reader )
C O M E A L I T T L E C L O S E R 🎶 waiting for a girl like you, foreigner
This was easily the stupidest decision you’d ever made, telling Tina you’d come to her party and then actually showing up. Because you were too old for this shit. Because you’d been out of high school for a few years now and who partied like this anymore?
You shot Eddie and Robin a glare as they stood next to you snickering under their breaths. They’d dragged you along with everyone else to crowd down in the basement and wait outside a closet door to see if Tommy and Carol would ever come out.
Seven minutes in Heaven. The most asinine game of all time, but everyone was eating it up. It’d been well over seven minutes and you were tired of hanging out with a bunch of old high school acquaintances.
“I’m leaving,” you hissed at Eddie and he grabbed at your hand with ringed fingers.
“No, not yet,” came out in a whine, looking down at you with big, brown, puppy dog eyes.
“There is no way in hell I’m going in that closet.”
Eddie grinned, smile lines creasing his cheeks. “C’mon, it’s not that bad.”
“Eds, you need glasses. Look at this,” you waved an arm around at the potential candidates you’d have the ‘pleasure’ of sharing a small, dark, linen closet with.
A low chuckle rumbled in his chest. “The worst is already in there,” he teased, “’sides, Harrington’s here.”
Harrington.
“Don’t even think about it,” you muttered and he grinned even wider.
“What? He’s nice now. Saved my ass more than a few times,” Eddie protested and you rolled your eyes.
“Absolutely not.”
Steve Harrington and his stupid member’s only jacket and perfectly coiffed hair and million dollar smile, the one that could – apparently – bag any girl he wanted. It had boggled your mind when Robin told you she’d made a new friend, Steve Harrington, can you believe it?? No, you couldn’t. Since when did King Steve buddy up with band geeks? A few shifts at Scoops Ahoy and you were already playing second fiddle to some asshole jock.
Well, not today. You didn’t need this.
Shooting back the last of the whiskey sour in your cup you gave the handle of the door one last glance and shook your head – stupid – but when you moved to leave the crowd gave a whoop.
“Shit, Tommy!” “Carol, oh my god, how was it??” “Did you find heaven?” “Gross!”
Tommy emerged from the closet triumphant, pumping a fist in the air with Carol under his arm, cheeks flushed and a big grin on her face. Everyone was eating it up and the thought of having to go in there with someone, anyone, made your stomach flip over.
“Eds, I’m going–”
“No–Sweetheart, stay!” he begged, nudging Robin with his elbow, “Right, Robs?”
“Are you kidding? No, you can’t leave. This is just getting good! What, are you nervous or something? Oh my god, you are! What’re you nervous about? Is it cos Peter Townsend is here? He’s so not your type–”
“Robin,” you hissed, cheeks flushed as every pair of eyes in the room settled on you.
“Wha–oh,” Robin chuckled and pasted on a piss poor excuse for a smile.
“You can’t go now,” Carol purred from under Tommy’s arm, “You’re up next, hon.”
Fuck, fuck, fuck. This wasn’t happening.
“Sorry, I have to be up early tomorrow for work and–”
“It’s only seven minutes,” Tommy sneered, the grin on his mouth pulling up at the edges – a shark with blood in the water.
You couldn’t breathe, air sucked out of your lungs as your grasped at straws, trying to muster up another excuse. You desperately looked to Robin and Eddie for help, but they were too busy whispering and giggling at your expense and your cheeks burned.
“Fine,” you pushed, trying your best to sound unbothered, chin tipped up in defiance.
“That’s more like it,” Tommy said with a whoop, rubbing his hands together, “And while you were too busy arguing with tweedle dee and dum over there we all decided you’re in with Harrington.”
Your stomach lurched dangerously, queasy and full of dread.
“But, I thought you were supposed to spin–”
“Nah, we put it to a vote,” Carol cut you off picking at her nails, “Better not keep him waiting.”
Keep him waiting? Your eyes frantically searched the sea of faces staring at you, but Steve wasn’t among them. When your gaze finally settled on the closet you saw it was just barely cracked, a shadowy figure shifting in the inky black just beyond.
You thought you were going to be sick, but you weren’t about to be made into a wuss. Turning to Eddie you grabbed his beer and chugged it in one go, then finished off whatever was in Robin’s cup too, shit, easy sweetheart.
“You’re on the clock,” Tommy goaded as Carol took hold of your hand and tugged you toward the closet.
“Have fun,” she teased, voice sing-songy, shoving you through the door and shutting it behind you, plunging you into darkness.
❝ MAYBE I’M WRONG, WON’T YOU TELL ME IF I’M COMING ON TOO STRONG?
Your eyes strained against the black of the small room, your body all too aware of there being someone else in there with you. It made the air thick, too warm and too close and the booze swimming through your veins had you feeling on edge.
“Thought you were gonna stand me up.”
Steve’s voice broke the tension and you jumped at the sudden noise, pulse fluttering against your neck.
“You’re lucky I didn’t,” you cut back, trying to stick to your guns, but then he shifted a little closer, his breath warming over you cheek, and it melted whatever resolve you had left.
“Ouch,” he half-laughed, arm brushing yours as he rocked on his feet.
It was slow, but your eyes were adjusting, dense black shadows blurring into soft indigos and violets and Steve’s face swam into focus. Thick, dark lashes framing warm, hazel eyes, the strong slope of his jaw, moles chasing across his neck and cheeks and that dumb grin. The one he was giving you now.
"This is stupid,” you muttered and Steve laughed, tutting at you.
“You didn't have to come, you know,” he teased and you gifted him with a particularly bratty eye roll.
“Seemed like a good idea at the time,” you snarked and it pulled the corners of his mouth up into a tiny grin.
“At the time, huh? Not anymore?”
You scoffed, shook your head and folded your arms over your chest, but the words wouldn't come. Stuck in your throat at the way you could feel the warmth of Steve's chest lingering just a few inches away, the scent of his cologne making you dizzy, hazy at the edges and all of a sudden unsure.
Shifting on his feet, Steve's toes bumped into yours as he put a hand on the wall next to your ear and leaned a little closer.
“Do I make you nervous?” he asked, his voice notched a little lower, closer, closer, closer, and it made something in your belly twist.
“Nervous?” you huffed a weak laugh, “Keep your pants on, Harrington. I don’t even know you.”
“D'you want to?” Your breath caught in your throat as he crowded over you and lifted a hand to tuck your flyaways behind your ear. “You can obviously do whatever you want, but–” his tongue flicked out to chase along his lower lip and heat pooled in your belly at the thought of what he might taste like, “–aren’t you a little curious?”
“Curious?” you breathed, voice barely above a whisper and he nodded softly.
“Yeah, what it would be like.”
You’d been in classes him with since grade school, watched as he won everyone over for popularity in middle school and shot to the top of the social pyramid in high school all while you lingered down at the bottom with Eddie and Robin and Jonathan, but you couldn’t deny it. Of course you’d looked at him just a little too long, eyes stuck on the way his Levi’s hugged in all the right places, heart racing when he smiled at you from down the hall.
“To kiss you?” you asked and he hummed, a low rumble in his chest.
“Only if you want to,” came out strained, a strangled sound as he pushed the words from his lips and you found yourself arching into him.
“I–” you started, lashes fluttering atop your cheeks, “–I want to.”
And Steve wanted it too, hadn’t realized just how down bad he was for you. You in those jeans. You and the way you seemed immune to his charms. You and your confidence and fire and disregard for everything ‘cool’ or ‘trendy.’
“You sure?” he asked again, body tensing as your hips bumped into his, jaw ticking as he bit down on the heat swelling his chest.
“Kiss me,” you whispered and he felt himself unravel at the way your voice edged on needy, a little desperate, a little bossy and God – you were hot.
His free hand moved to rest on your waist, fingers pressing into the plush of your hip, breaths falling heavy between you as he leaned down, down, down to capture your bottom lip between his and it was like a rubber band snapping.
Years worth of tension pulling and stretching and straining as you both played it all off like nothing. Like you didn’t care. The thought of you being with each other like this a joke, but the only people you were fooling was yourselves.
Steve tugged at your bottom lip and it pulled a sound from your throat that put him in the palm of your hand — soft, pliable, yours. He dropped his hand from the wall to grab at your other hip and you teetered a little off balance, grabbing at his shoulders to steady yourself.
Your arms looped around his neck too easy then, like they’d been doing it for years, like they’d mapped the curve of his neck and muscles pulled taut across his back a thousand times. Pressing your tongue to the seam of his lips he opened to you and you licked into him, tasted spearmint, cheap beer, Steve, and you wanted more.
He slotted a knee between your thighs and you gasped, a lovely pretty sound he wished he could keep forever, keening for him as he pressed your back into the wall. Parted your lips with a pop and dragged messy, open-mouthed kissed down your neck, your collarbone, your shoulder–
“Harrington, is your watch broken? Jesus it’s been like ten min–”
“Shit,” Steve stumbled away from you into the shelves full of towels as Tommy yarded the closet door open, the sight of you two dropping his mouth into a little ‘o’. Hair messed, foreheads dewy with sweat, lips kiss-bitten and a hicky sucked to your neck.
“My bad, did you need another seven?” Tommy grinned.
Head leaned back against the shelves, Steve squeezed his eyes shut, chin tipped up as he pushed a heavy sigh from his lungs and all too aware of the way the crotch of his jeans was way too tight.
“Yeah, maybe,” Steve hissed, hands tangled in his hair and it made you laugh. A soft, little thing without any heat behind it, cheeks flushed and pink.
“It’s all good, Hagan,” came out easy, confidence swelling where Steve’s had deflated, “We can finish it in the car.”
And God, Steve would’ve made a mess of his pants right then and there if you hadn’t pulled him from the closet and up the stairs out to your bronco with a bench seat more than wide enough to fit two people on top of it, more than confident you wouldn’t need another seven minutes.
