Nameless and Friendless. ā€œThe Rich Manā€™s Wealth is his Strong City, Etc.ā€ - Proverbs, x, 15
Artist: Emily Mary Osborn (English, 1828ā€“1925)
Date: 1857
Medium: Oil paint on canvas
Collection: Tate Britain, London, United Kingdom
Description
Nameless and Friendless focuses on the predicament of the single woman in the modern metropolis by offering a female version of the traditional ā€˜Choice of Herculesā€™ theme. The picture shows an orphaned female artist (as suggested by her black dress), accompanied by a boy, presumably her brother, diffidently offering one of her paintings to a dealer whose disdainful expression suggests rejection. An assistant looks down cursorily at her canvas from his position on a ladder, while the woman is eyed up from behind by two rakish men otherwise engaged in examining a hand-coloured print of a ballerina ā€“ the bare legs of whom suggest other choices facing the impoverished and desperate young woman. Isolated in the centre of the composition between leering and contemptuous glances, the womanā€™s vulnerability is accentuated by her downward gaze and fingers nervously pulling a hoop of string. The mud-splattered crepe of her skirt, her dripping umbrella and protective cape hint at the distance she has travelled and the conditions she has endured to brave the encounter.

Paintings by Ethel C. Smith Worcester, MA January 30, 2025
On a frigid morning in January, I wandered into a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store to donate a bundle of paper bags. On one of my first trips to this Re-Store, one of the employees told me they hardly ever had bags for the customers to put their purchases in, and these paper bags have just been taking up space in our apartment, so I thought I would donate them. After dropping them off, I decided to shop. They always have new, reasonably priced stuff on their shelves.
I had no idea I would stumble across these. A collection of 34 12x16 paintings all by the same lady, Ethel C. Smith. With an old-fashioned name like that, I thought maybe she had passed away recently and her family didn't want her artwork. It made me sad to think about because the paintings are so well done.
They were priced at $2.50 each. I splurged and bought all of them.
Before I made the decision to buy all of them, I gathered them into my cart and scanned them right there in the store because I knew that whether or not I bought them, I wanted to share them. But the longer I stood there and scanned, the stronger this feeling grew that I needed to keep the collection together. I knew that, more than likely, no one else would buy the whole collection. I didn't necessarily love every single one, but I knew I had to keep them together.
Not all of them have dates on the back, but the few that do are dated from 1984-1986. This one even says "Smith Home in Westboro, Mass."
Tumblr media
Ari looked up her name and found her obituary from 2004. Ethel C. Smith lived to be 93 and had three sons. With her obituary being twenty years old, I think maybe one of her sons kept the paintings initially and then later passed away himself, and Ethel's grandchildren or great-grandchildren didn't have as much sentimental attachment to them and donated them.
I want to get them all framed someday and display them after we buy a house and have more wall space.

For your miniature painting ponderings. Acrylic paint is good and works fine. Obs there are specifically made paints for miniatures, but I personally like to use just their various effects paints and shit that you cant get otherwise(and some colors i really like the shade of). But in a larger scale, good quality acrylics do perfectly fine.
Omg sorry I didn't see this aaaaa thank you for the advice!!! I'll check if the acrylics I have are good enough, I'll try a bunch of things and then decide if I wanna invest in some more specific stuff :0

People joke about ADHD all the time, even swear up and down they totally think they also have it, but then if you ask for an accommodation, to please please please provide things in fucking writing, EXACTLY what they want and need, you will even work it out WITH them, like they promised they would do ā€” repeatedly over and over, and then you don't get it people really will fucking be like:
Tumblr media
I am using the incorrect bathroom (TM) to place my shelving and store my things. Homegirl literally removed various sundries and toiletries from a CLOSED CABINET and SHELF because she's interested in boundaries and accountability for my mess.
I said months ago I wanted to improve things for her comfort level and needed a written list of what precisely that fucking looked like in order to achieve it and not miss anything she deemed important. I explained how ADHD works, why I needed a written reference. Why I had to have it laid out, and if something needed changing we needed to write it all out. I would've made the list myself, but they said they would make it for the whole house to hold up their end of things. And, thinking this was a very reasonable adult solution to keeping the house in good shape, I said okay, come up with the list of expectations and what is needed and that way we can update how we handle chores. Awesome. I will do that to uphold my end.
No list ever gets made or drafted or anything despite my bringing it up, knowing we need to do it, but I DO get berated for failing to meet expectations and boundaries that were never fucking provided or delivered and include "don't store toiletries in this particular bathroom because I don't like it."
I can't believe I am a goddamn adult who gets treated like an idiot child for expecting adult communication instead of snide ass passive aggressive bullshit and basic respect for my things.
Because when I fucking get home, my shelving has been removed and a cabinet emptied of my things and placed in the "correct" bathroom.

Oh shit she solved it, this doesn't look cluttered at all!
What a vast improvement to storing things in appropriate storage!

This fucked up painting is haunted (?) and following me.
So. About four years ago I worked in a thrift shop on the east coast of the United States. This painting was donated to that store. I specifically remember it because of 1. The glued on googly eyes and 2. my coworker and I discussing what Horror they were staring at.
This week, I walked into my local thrift store and found it. Again. This would be less weird if I had not moved 2,500 miles in the meantime.
I bought it. Haunted or not it obviously yearns for me tragically and I am not one to deny the universe. If you have any info at all about this fucked up painting or what could be following me, please advise <3
Facts so far:
It is hand painted, not a print.
The google eyes are glued on, not painted.
There is a signature on the bottom right that appears to say "L Kollinks "93"
Searching through google lens suggest this is a copy of an oil painting by Karl Huber, a German artist who was born in 1928 and died in 2009.
