The Shoe Shop
Artist: Elizabeth Sparhawk-Jones (American, 1885–1968)
Date: c. 1911
Medium: OIl on canvas
Collection: Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, United States
Description
In 1911 the department store was a relatively new and important urban institution, and The Shoe Shop depicts the activities of female employees and their customers. Elizabeth Sparhawk-Jones rendered this modern subject in a rapid, painterly style, paying particular attention to effects of light and atmosphere. Her early work often represented women in the modern city: nursemaids at home, women strolling in the park, shoppers, and store clerks. Strongly influenced by artist William Merritt Chase, Sparhawk-Jones’s painting constitutes a highly personal vision that drew from both Realism and Impressionism.

For your miniature painting ponderings. Acrylic paint is good and works fine. Obs there are specifically made paints for miniatures, but I personally like to use just their various effects paints and shit that you cant get otherwise(and some colors i really like the shade of). But in a larger scale, good quality acrylics do perfectly fine.
Omg sorry I didn't see this aaaaa thank you for the advice!!! I'll check if the acrylics I have are good enough, I'll try a bunch of things and then decide if I wanna invest in some more specific stuff :0

People joke about ADHD all the time, even swear up and down they totally think they also have it, but then if you ask for an accommodation, to please please please provide things in fucking writing, EXACTLY what they want and need, you will even work it out WITH them, like they promised they would do — repeatedly over and over, and then you don't get it people really will fucking be like:
Tumblr media
I am using the incorrect bathroom (TM) to place my shelving and store my things. Homegirl literally removed various sundries and toiletries from a CLOSED CABINET and SHELF because she's interested in boundaries and accountability for my mess.
I said months ago I wanted to improve things for her comfort level and needed a written list of what precisely that fucking looked like in order to achieve it and not miss anything she deemed important. I explained how ADHD works, why I needed a written reference. Why I had to have it laid out, and if something needed changing we needed to write it all out. I would've made the list myself, but they said they would make it for the whole house to hold up their end of things. And, thinking this was a very reasonable adult solution to keeping the house in good shape, I said okay, come up with the list of expectations and what is needed and that way we can update how we handle chores. Awesome. I will do that to uphold my end.
No list ever gets made or drafted or anything despite my bringing it up, knowing we need to do it, but I DO get berated for failing to meet expectations and boundaries that were never fucking provided or delivered and include "don't store toiletries in this particular bathroom because I don't like it."
I can't believe I am a goddamn adult who gets treated like an idiot child for expecting adult communication instead of snide ass passive aggressive bullshit and basic respect for my things.
Because when I fucking get home, my shelving has been removed and a cabinet emptied of my things and placed in the "correct" bathroom.
🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

Oh shit she solved it, this doesn't look cluttered at all!
What a vast improvement to storing things in appropriate storage!

This fucked up painting is haunted (?) and following me.
So. About four years ago I worked in a thrift shop on the east coast of the United States. This painting was donated to that store. I specifically remember it because of 1. The glued on googly eyes and 2. my coworker and I discussing what Horror they were staring at.
This week, I walked into my local thrift store and found it. Again. This would be less weird if I had not moved 2,500 miles in the meantime.
I bought it. Haunted or not it obviously yearns for me tragically and I am not one to deny the universe. If you have any info at all about this fucked up painting or what could be following me, please advise <3
Facts so far:
It is hand painted, not a print.
The google eyes are glued on, not painted.
There is a signature on the bottom right that appears to say "L Kollinks "93"
Searching through google lens suggest this is a copy of an oil painting by Karl Huber, a German artist who was born in 1928 and died in 2009.

Woman with Umbrella in Front of a Hat Shop
Artist: August Macke (German, 1887-1914)
Date: 1914
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany
Description
This is regarded as the most mature of Macke's shop window paintings. It arose immediately after Zwei Frauen vor dem Hutladen and also builds on it. Theme and atmosphere are similar, typically urban, but anything but loud and hectic. The female figure, dressed in an elegant suit, wearing a hat with a white bouquet on her head and an umbrella over her shoulder, could have been taken right out of that earlier work. The lady has no face and remains anonymous, as if she were a fashion doll.
Compositionally, Macke has arranged the image space along clear diagonal perspective lines. The plane-disintegrating geometric shape of the stone facade with the carved pilasters and the shop window, as well as the abstracted figure, fit into the structure of the painting like mosaic stones and form an integrated unit. This also applies to the use of color, with deliberately chosen accents around the middle. The woman's clothing, predominantly warm reds and yellows, corresponds to the hats in the shop window on stands, which are decorated with ribbons and feathers. The light breaks in the window. Reflections mix both inside and outside with the spaces and surfaces. The transparent surfaces in the shop window are echoed in the rustic pilaster on the side.
The attraction of the work lies mainly in the clear and firm power of the composition and the radiant expressive power of the contrasting colours. The atmospheric figurative description of the situation is naturally mixed with a cool abstract effect, giving the painting a special classical-modern tension.

What? An actual scene from The Painted Sable in 2024? That’s crazy.
Tumblr media
In an effort to beat my forgetful brain that doesn’t remember to eat sometimes, I’ve been trying new foods. 1.) I might find something I like enough to add to the foods or seasonings I keep around, and 2.) I hopefully like something enough to, ya know, remember it’s there and be happy to eat it. Perhaps even excited to cook with it. Also something hopefully not so expensive to where buying it can be as food instead of a treat. I’m mostly out for ingredients I can use in lots of stuff, not just snacks or jams where it’s really only useful in one area (hence able to go bad if I don’t make that one food). As a plus, it’s an outstanding excuse to explore local shops or markets. Recently found a store that was just full of stuff. Seasonings and meats and produce that’s a little hard to locate in my area with such variety.

My favorite so far has been soup dumplings. It’s definitely more of a treat if I’m buying it frozen, though, haha. Might be able to make it myself a little cheaper.
