Carter: Continuously Charitable Centenarian

Oldest living president Jimmy Carter turned 100 at the start of October and despite only serving one term in the White House, his presidential and post presidential actions will serve a lasting legacy. He’s most likely recognised for his handling of the Iranian Hostage Crisis (1979-81) and his failure to deal with it when he successfully and peacefully negotiated their release, but since it was minutes after Reagan was inaugurated, he never received credit. 

Carter has spent his years since the presidency focusing on charity work, for example the Carter Centre which was founded by him and his wife Rosalynn in 1982, only 1 year post presidency meaning he wasted no time in using his name for good when it was most recognisable. 

Since then, the Carter Centre’s aim to improve human rights worldwide has been a success, leading to them alleviating bacterial eye disease trachoma in Ghana (2010) and ending river blindness in Sudan (2012). His work with the foundation meant Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. 

He's also worked with Habitat for Humanity, donating a week of his time every year since 1984, even celebrating his 40th wedding anniversary building a home. His commitment to helping people is unwavering, at age 95 he was helping build houses despite having 14 stitches days prior: “I haven't missed a habitat weekend in 36 years, so I didn't want to miss this one”.

For his 100th birthday, habitat built 30 homes in that week, showing his true legacy comes from his character over his policies.

Habitat for Humanity is an international organization that seeks to eliminate poverty housing from the world by making decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. The Riverside affiliate is an independently-funded nonprofit dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes across the Inland Empire. A unique facet of the organization is that while it provides affordable housing, prospective homeowners participate in the construction of their homes.

This year’s event will take place on November 1, 2024, featuring multiple job sites across Palm Beach County. This significant fundraiser and community effort aims to support veterans and active service members.

With nearly 76,000 veterans residing in Palm Beach County, Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to honoring these heroes by promoting homeownership. The Veterans Build program is pivotal in ensuring that veterans can achieve or maintain the American dream of homeownership, providing them with a secure and affordable place to live.

How You Can Get Involved

There are several impactful ways for the community to contribute to Veterans Build 2024. You can become a sponsor, participate in or organize fundraising activities and volunteer for building projects, or donate to the American Dream Fund, a special fund dedicated to Veterans Build 2024.
