Rylee had never known her family. She was raised in the foster system from a very young age and never knew where she came from. Year after year she saw the other kids move on from their lapsed childhood to better things and began expanding on their heritage and missing lineage. However, Rylee never had that same privilege. Because she was put into the system at such a young age she didn't have anywhere to go to learn more about her family.

That was, until the day of her eighteenth birthday she was approached by a man. This man was Sean O'Reilley, an estate lawyer. O'Reilley can with grave news of her grandmother, Marion Chase's passing. To Rylee's surprise, she was left with the deed to her grandmother's abandoned farm in Henford-On-Bagley.

This left Rylee with so many questions. She had a family? Why didn't her grandmother take her out of foster care? Why was all of this hidden from her?

Rylee wasn't sure, but she knew that she needed to find out. So off she went with her belongings, leaving her foster family behind, and headed for the countryside.

im gonna take you on a path following the costumes of star wars legends' most hated character

say what you will about artists always depicting mara in a catsuit - at least it's consistent.

callista ming, on the other hand? there's not much official art out there, and what there is can get muddled on the details. the most common outfit seems to be a purple vest layered over an asymmetrical purple skirt - purple seems to be a common thread here

even the details get muddled between different interpretations. sometimes she's got a white undershirt, sometimes she has bracers and armbands. pretty much always, she's showing off some serious cleavage (classic star wars official artist moment)

so what is a cosplayer to do?

i started by looking at my stash. for a different project i had already purchased a combo vest/blazer pattern: McCall's M7254:

I'll admit: when I first saw view D, my thought was that it looked like something Genevieve O'Reilley would be styled in for her turn as Mon Mothma in Andor.

practically every image of Callista available shows some shimmer in that vest. but not too much shimmer. Is it just the way artists like to color? Or is it meant to connote some non-obvious material?

(my mom keeps trying to suggest silk velvet, dyed so the rayon backing is purple but the silk pile remains undyed. i am probably not going to go for that)

anyway here is my progress on view A, mostly for fit purposes.

i cut the pattern pieces for the XL size based on the final measurement of the garment, which is a bust of 44" (which is about what I have.) however, the body really doesn't fit without taking the sides in by a good measure, even more than the L size (for a 40" bust). i also experimented with some dart placement, but nowhere made me happy so i just left it

(dress form pro tip: if it won't adjust to your size, you can put a tight-fitting shirt over the top and stuff its bra (and tummy))

I've seen some people suggest a full-bust adjustment, but looking at the process for adjusting a princess seam is scary

my mom managed to dig up 3 yards of purple jersey, so i might fuck around with that next. this pattern is like REALLY fabric-intensive

so anyway that's my progress so far, i would love to hear ideas on this whole thing

the interview is devastating no matter who you think about watching it.

mildred potter seeing her husband, who has fought in every major war since the first world war. daniel pierce seeing his son, looking so haggard. peg hunnicutt seeing her husband, getting that message he says while looking straight at the camera that he loves and misses her and erin. uncle ed and mama o'reilley seeing that boy they swore just yesterday -- because it was -- ran out the door with his textbooks a'danglin' from their carrying strap because he's gonna be late for school, looking so grown up.

louise burns seeing her husband and clenching her jaw. kathy mulcahy seeing her dear older brother, noticing he doesn't say hello as earnestly to anybody back home, because he doesn't want anybody to know his home hasn't ever been a kind place, watching him tear up when he says he just wants to be warm and clean and hear confessions and run the cyo.

the klinger clan seeing their max. most of them hardly speak a lick of english, but they jump and exclaim and cheer, that's their max! look, habibi, it's max! our maxwell! trapper john mcintyre seeing everybody he left, his little girls asking him questions and his wife holding his hand. that could've been him. lorraine blake crying through the whole thing. her husband was supposed to come home. these are the people he always wrote to her about.

when the second interview episode comes around, honoria winchester seeing her older brother, and beaming with pride, but it slowly fades as she realizes how hard this is on him. alvin houlihan impassively watching his iron-clad daughter.

what about the others? based on the scenes gelbart wrote 30 years later, he had a few others in mind to be interviewed. igor. kellye. colonel flagg. sidney. what did their families and friends think when they saw them on tv?

This is all we saw, and felt, for the 96 hours from Indonesia to Philippines. Water. Waves. Wind. Rolling, pitching, hurling you into the walls, ejecting some stomaches overboard.
