belated discovery day doodles :) a couple of different 1890s outfits
not to get emo on a little post (forgive me ive been very emo lately) but this gal here is the Reason i joined IAMP back in 2009. I was having a conversation about this recently that made me get all misty eyed and everything and it is very important to me personally that i got to be her VA and that i got to have some input on her human name and characterization.
the klondike gold rush has been my big history obsession since i was old enough to have one. theoretically it says 'sourdough' on my birth certificate because i was born in the territory, haha, so its been part of me for as long as i have been me. (don't ask why my yukon health card is more legible than my alberta one shh)
anyway discovery day is celebrated the third monday of august each year. you'll see skookum jim often listed as the guy responsible for discovering gold in the klondike, but you'll see kate carmack credited less often because [gestures to a long history of the erasure of Indigenous women] yknow.
anyway eons ago i did a little comic about the gold rush here if you want to read it in which i am much more eloquent and less dead and more ambitious lol

mani enjoying a quiet summer fishing time
i have been refreshing myself on manitoba history for work reasons so he's on my mind. There's a dearth of him enjoying himself and also experiencing the summer months so I'm aiming to correct it.
It has been a horrible summer with two states of emergencies that have been used as excuses for american politicians to take potshots at us so uh. manifesting better days and all.
just listened to this on repeat for the vibe hahaha

More 30s doodles, today it's Lilith!
Lethbridge had a massive turn around from the American whisky fort days in the 19th century, ended up on the Canadian side of the border, started coal mining, and was set to become one of the major distribution centres of Western Canada as the railways came through. With such amazing potential... Lethbridge spent more than the city could afford on a big international farming expo in 1912 that put the city in debt for decades after. In that sense, the Depression hit Lethbridge long before 1929.
Also, in a move somewhat reminiscent of our current struggles... the US put tariffs on Canadian coal in the 1930s. Miners were laid off and the coal those that those who were still working could mine wouldn't make it to their usual buyers, so the miners ended up having to steal coal from work in order to heat their homes and cook.

see the good news is i did a painting but the bad news is its getting dark and im not going to have time between the paint drying and the sun abruptly vanishing to do the details and even if i did i'll wait until morning for better lighting
yep asks still open (link is in pinned) its just that the Severe Thunderstorm that Damages Life and Property was supposed to start 5 hours ago and hasn't and i am once again --as i've been for the past week-- sitting in direct sunlight above my favoured temperature threshold so rather than sit at my desk to draw im going to pout on the couch and play video games until i can stand existence again so thanks for your patience
#hapo rambles#i could just scan it but then i'm worried i'll wash it out#cuz i can't see what im doing#this is the issue with painting in summer sigh#but yay for living at 53 N so i can have the dregs of sunset at 9:30pm#still no sign of this big storm but i have faith its coming

I realized drawing Jas yesterday that I haven't really drawn them very much since last summer for probably obvious reasons. Then this happened and I stewed on it furiously for ages until now hahaha...
i mean even if i didn't have family directly involved in the recovery effort i'd still take it personally
also... ironically my pen died while i was trying to draw the "please let me kill for you" panel ( TT A TT)
also yes new haircut for Jas because I wanted to like. Acknowledge what happened visually somehow in a way that I could also visually depict recovery so! yeah.

Me experimenting with this ^

More from the 30s, this time its Jas. This one was tricky for a lot of reasons - Jasper National Park was created in 1930 with the National Parks Act, but it also represented an interim between some of the darkest parts in Jasper history. When I do these brief skims for "what was going on where", I specifically look for how cities represent their own histories and as you'd expect there's a Very different attitude between historical accounts depending on whether they're directed at tourists or not.
The Depression in the National Parks was more of a boom in terms of infrastructure, tourism, and this was boosted further because of the rise of the film industry which highlighted the natural beauty for the world to see. This was possible because of the forced eviction of Indigenous peoples and particularly the Metis who defined Jasper's "cozy cabin culture", and it was also used as an internment camp for so-called enemy aliens in WWI and WWII. The construction projects, including the road between Jasper and Banff, was possible because of the labour from the camps.
A bit more meta and background below. Waaaay more detail than previous doodles because I'm still thinking through a lot and I gotta verbalize those thoughts.
So I made a firm decision that Jasper was going to be Metis, partially because the fort predated the presence of white women in the west and even if my characters aren't born in the usual way the number one thing on my list was not to default to an anachronism by having a character be 100% white in order to make navigating difficult history "easier", which is something that was more common in the aph fandom like a decade ago and I'm glad is changing.
Jasper's surname comes from Lewis Swift, a settler at the turn of the century who had married a Metis woman, Suzette, and became the park's first game warden by virtue of not being evicted. Swift was therefore a broker between the Park and his Metis neighbours who had been forced to relocate because Indigenous and Metis people, who had long been associated with "Natural" rather than "Human" history galleries in Victorian museums, suddenly were no longer "compatible" with nature in the 20th century. This is a complication that I didn't want to gloss over and instead make central to Jas as a character.
The Metis who were relocated did not have their promises fulfilled and therefore stopped recognizing authorities, refusing to pay collection fees or respect forestry bylaws. I think this is also an attitude at Jas' core that complicates their relationship with the Park - of course, it also makes it difficult to figure out exactly where Jas' personal history intersects with the Park and I don't have all the answers. Given that I've previously represented Jas sleeping, wandering off and returning to discover the world had changed, I don't think that Park officials were particularly capable of enforcing laws that would have affected them given Jas would be the #1 expert on navigating the region, with or without roads.
The road to Edmonton was completed in 1928, so I imagine that Ed would have visited to check up on Jas relatively more often. I don't think Jas and Nor would have spent a lot of time together, if any, before 1930 - however I think the construction of the road was something that literally and figuratively brought them closer in a time when neither of them had anyone in the rest of the world let alone the country who would understand their unique situations. Exactly how that relationship developed I still have to speculate on more, but its interesting!
Anyway. Long ramble to say that I don't know PRECISELY what Jas was up to given that the Park was built on removing people like them, but at the same time I think the reality of being a personification is that you don't really fit into the normal human kinship structures anyway and have to find your own way. I think Jas probably was involved in some way or another with the make-work projects because they were unable to continue as they had been living for the past century, but also because I assume they would be genuinely curious about the influx of people from elsewhere. Whether they were actually involved in the work or taking what they needed and sharing what they had is debatable though...
