Hiding a secret pet from your parents was stressful enough, but hiding a whole grown ass man in your room would likely be a thousand times as nerve wracking.  Especially with a step douche who had a habit of barging into the room. Luckily for Winnie, her stepfather was never a quiet man, always stomping along the floor in thick combat boots. And her current stowaway was very perceptive. That still didn't cover all her issues. Winnie had searched all over Nexus Mods for that damn cheat mod she downloaded but could not find it again. It was as if the creator deleted it just after Astarion got out. To make matters worse the vampire was likely starting to get hungry. He'd been gazing at her more and more longingly each day since his escape from the computer. She'd need a way for feeding her guest which didn't involve anyone getting sucked flat like a caprisun. Of course she thought about offering him her own blood, but the idea honestly made her uneasy. In fantasy it was very appealing, having an extremely attractive and alluring man suck on your neck, what's not to like? There was the whole sharp teeth tearing into your flesh aspect, but in fantasy there was no pain, no need to worry about death. Just sweet sweet blissful fantasy. But that was not the case now.  In reality if Astarion were to sink his fangs into her neck he wouldn't need to drink all her blood to kill her. She'd probably bleed out from her jugular being punctured alone.
Winnie stared over at him as he peeked out the window. Night had fallen and he didn't need to worry about the sun. At least not for a while.
Winnie sighed, “I have no idea how I'm going to feed you if I'm honest.”
“Since you're so keen on protecting our dear friend Brian I suppose that leaves me with having to go out and hunt for my next meal, well unless you'd be generous enough to offer me your lovely neck.”
“I don't think that's a good idea, but I guess my arm might be okay…” Winnie lifted up her arm to look at it.
“You love to take the fun out of things don’t you? But alright, I'm not about to turn down a willing meal.” Astarion's pupils practically dilated at the sight of the veins on Winnie’s arm. His mouth watering at the thought of her warm blood coating his throat and he couldn't help but lick his lips.
“Hold on! I didn't mean right this second!” Winnie hid her arm behind her back, her cheeks turning red at the hungry look he was giving her.
“Such a tease.” Astarion huffed and crossed his arms.
“I had some things planned for tonight and I can't do them if my head is spinning from blood loss.”  Winnie said before searching through her closet.
She pulled out a large duffle bag and began to unzip it. Inside were some hoodies and other clothing. Grey and black T-shirts, some jeans and a pair of sneakers. “Here, these were my brother's, they’ll probably fit you.” Winnie said before tossing the bag onto the bed.
Astarion made a disgusted sound.
“These are so tasteless and drab!”
“We’ll get you something more suitable to your tastes later. For now you need to be able to blend in.” Winnie explained. Astarion muttered something under his breath before he started removing his purple doublet and exposing his pale muscular chest. He was so perfect, so flawless. Winnie’s brain honestly turned off for a moment as the elf then proceeded to slide down his pants. Her eyes nearly entranced by a certain large shape in his drawers, her face turning bright red.
“My eyes are up here, darling.~”Astarion purred, voice husky and soft.
“A-Ah sorry! I should….” Winnie sputtered before scrambling off into the connecting bathroom. Astarion chuckled a bit, watching the flustered female dash out of the room. He couldn't help but find her rather adorable.  Winnie stood in the bathroom for a few moments, heart pounding as she pressed her back against the door.
Oh God, why didn't I walk out sooner!?
“You can come out now, my dear.” Eventually Astarion's voice broke her from her thoughts. The human girl let out an exasperated sigh before opening the door and heading back in. The clothes were a little tight around his body, making his muscles quite visible through the light gray tee.  Winnie quickly grabbed a black hoodie and handed it to him. “Here, put this on.” She said, watching him slide the jacket on. Winnie zipped it up for him before leaning up on her tiptoes and  pulling the hood over his head.
“Hey! My hair!” He whined.
“I'll fix it for you later. Right now I don't want anyone gawking over your ears.”
“Why would anyone be doing that?”
“Ah, right. You see, in this world there are no elves, no magic, no vampires….Just humans really.” Winnie rubbed the back of her head.
“Really? Gods, how dull. Not that I mind being the only vampire around. That actually sounds rather delightful.” Astarion smirked a bit.
“Please don't get in any world domination ideas. Just because there aren't any vampires doesn't mean there aren't people who can tear you a new one.” Winnie sighed before peeking out the door into the hall. “Okay, they're asleep. Now come on.” Winnie said quietly.
“Where are we going?” Astarion whispered, slowly following Winnie as they tiptoed out of the house.
“We're heading out to town. It's probably a good idea for you to get acquainted with the area just in  case something bad happens.” Winnie explained, “plus I feel bad about keeping you locked up in my room for days.” She then took out her cellphone and shook it, causing the flashlight to turn on.
“I thought you said, you didn't have magic here.”
“We don't. This my fanged friend is technology. It’s a machine mostly for talking to people far away, but also does a bunch of other stuff.” Winnie used her phone to navigate in the dark as they began walking down across her driveway. Winnie’s neighborhood was quiet, each of the houses were fairly spaced out with plenty of trees and brush littering the terrain.  Parked in the yard near her family’s cars was a purple motorcycle.
“Oh, and this is my trusty steed! Or well it's basically my personal source of transportation. Think of it like a horse but made of metal. To make it even better this won't decide to turn around and bite you!” Winnie said with a smile.
“As wonderful as that sounds. I'm not quite sure about climbing onto some strange metal contraption.”
“Well…If you'd rather walk….” Winnie said in a sing-songy tone, putting her phone into her pocket.
“Nevermind! Let's go!”
Winnie climbed on the bike, her hands gripping the handles as she glanced over at Astarion. He looked the vehicle over curiously, nearly jumping up in the air when the girl turned on the engine.
“Come on!” Winnie said.  Hesitantly he climbed on and immediately clung to Winnie, arms wrapped around her plush waist.
“Oh, this is rather intimate.~” Astarion took the opportunity to nuzzle his face into her neck, growing a bit more comfortable as he held onto her soft form. Winnie immediately turned bright red, a shiver going down her spine.  She didn't really think this through did she?
Focus! Do not let the incredibly sexy vampire elf hugging your back cause you to have a crash!
We are not dying because of horniniess goddamnit!
Winnie mentally scolded herself as she drove off. Not that she disliked his attentions, mind you. She was just very easily flustered, never having been in any kind of romantic relationship, physical or otherwise.  Astarion sighed into her neck, The smell of lavender and cherry blossoms mixed with the delectable scent of her blood was absolutely heavenly.  It took all he had to resist the urge to sink his fangs into her neck and gorge himself on her blood.
Winnie kept her eyes on the road, the headlights of her motorcycle illuminated the street as they zoomed down it.  There weren't too many cars on the road so Winnie could be thankful for that.
They rode away from the suburbs where Winnie’s home resided, eventually until coming towards a small shop just outside of the city. A large sign that read ‘CornerStore’ sat atop the building and illuminated the parking lot.
“This is where I work.” Winnie said as she turned into the parking lot. She parked up front in her usual spot before turning off the engine and hopping off.
“Well this seems like a cozy little shop.” Astarion said, getting off. “What exactly could you precure here?”
“Mostly snacks. Some hygiene products and other things. Just stuff you need around your home really.” Winnie said, leaning up on her toes to fix his hoodie before leading him inside.
Winnie looked around the shop, thinking about anything she could get which would be useful for her new guest to have in the future. She couldn't get too much however. She only had so much room in the little trunk she had on her motorcycle.
Bandages would be a good idea, shampoo…. Though he'd likely complain if it was some kind of cheap smelling stuff….
Astarion looked over Winnie as she scanned around the store. His tongue flicked over his fangs as he couldn't help but stare at her jugular. The gnawing pain in his stomach was crying out, demanding to be sated. He backed up as Winnie became engrossed in the products that decorated the shelves. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed a small creature outside the shop. Almost cat-like, but with a longer snout, a ringed tail and tiny black hands.  The creature appeared to be picking around in the trash outside. Not his first choice, but it had to at least be better than a rat.
Winnie kept looking through some hygiene products, wondering what her fanged friend would need when suddenly she heard what sounded like an angry raccoon. She quickly whipped her head around, heart nearly stopping when she noticed Astarion was gone.
Quickly she rushed outside and glanced over to see a dead raccoon fall to the ground. Astarion stood over it, blood dripping down his chin.
“Are you fucking kidding me!?” Winnie whisper-shouted.
“I was hungry…” Astarion shrugged, looking at her with round innocent eyes, mouth still covered in blood. Winnie grimaced, kicking the dead raccoon off to the side and out of sight before grabbing hold of Astarion and dragging him off. She pulled him into the store before making a beeline for the bathroom. She dragged him inside and slammed the door.
The young woman pinched the bride of her nose, on the verge of tearing her hair out.
“Please…Just please….Can you not do any vampire shit out where people can see you!?” Winnie said.
“No one was even around to see me. Sweetie, you worry far too much.” Astarion said, making a sassy hand gesture. Winnie crossed her arms and huffed, her eyebrow twitching.  She turned before grabbing some paper towels and wetting them.
“You have to understand.” Winnie said calmly, “if people find out you're a vampire they'll probably try to kill you or worse cut you open and try to find out what makes you tick. Just please be careful.” She wiped the blood off his face before crumbling up the towels and burying them in the bottom of the trashcan. Astarion crossed his arms and stepped closer to her.
“I am a master of stealth, my dear. And if you expect me to just wait about for my next meal while you flaunt around that delicious neck of yours, I might not be able to control myself for long.” He said, running a clawed finger over her jugular making her shiver. His voice was playful, a bit flirty even, but the warning was still very clear. If she kept him waiting for too long he might not even be able to think before taking a bite out of her.
“I promise I'll figure out a way to feed you, just give me time…Please.”
“Oh alright, but only because you're so sweet.” He tapped her nose playfully. “And that little snack should keep me sated for now, ahaha.”
Winnie washed her hands before leaving the bathroom to continue looking around for some supplies. Astarion followed after her, red eyes inspecting the isles with interest. Some of the objects looked familiar, but somehow still foreign.
A couple of times he'd ask Winnie what something was, and she'd do her best to explain, but sometimes it was difficult. Especially with some technological items that Winnie herself wasn't even completely educated on.
She picked up a few things she deemed would be useful for hosting her guest, bandages, hygienic stuff and a burner phone. Winnie was about to go pay for the items when she froze, eyes widening in fear. Shit. Becca was working tonight.
“Darling, are you alright?” The vampire’s voice was gentle. Astarion noticed Winnie’s fear and placed a hand on her shoulder before looking over to what had her tense. At the cash register was a tall skinny woman with long red hair, round red glasses and a face full of freckles. There was a black visor around her neck with a name tag attached along with several different round pins, most notable ones being a colorful pin with a pattern of pink and blue with a purple line in between and a second pin with what looked like a mind flayer on it. She wore a casual blue dress and didn't look the least but intimidating so Astarion was rather puzzled as to what had Winnie's heart pounding so wildly.
Becca was probably the closest thing Winnie had to a friend these days, considering practically all her peers from high school had ran off to start their own lives (the fucking plebs) and the two were able to bond a bit over a common interest in video games. See where this is going? Becca was a gamer. A rather devoted gamer who was always quick to snatch up any of the hot new triple A releases.  Winnie turned back to look at Astarion before quietly whispering, “when we go up to the counter do not say a word, okay?”
“Why?” Astarion asked.
“I'll explain it later, just stay quiet please.” She said before the two walked up to the register. Becca glanced up from the magazine she was looking over and smiled. Astarion held the small of Winnie’s back and stayed close to her. He was still not sure why Winnie was so frightened of this very simple looking woman. Though looks could be deceiving. She could be some kind of shapeshifter in disguise!
“Winnie! I didn't think you'd be stopping by tonight.” Becca said in a cheerful tone.
“Hey Becca!” Winnie greeted in a tone as perky as she could muster. “I…Just needed to pick up a few things I was running low on.” She said handing over the items. Becca’s blue eyes looked over Winnie’s face as she scanned the supplies.
She noticed her nervousness, but didn't seem too concerned. Winnie was known to get anxious quite easily. But then she noticed the male standing next to her and hummed. Becca noticed the white curls peeking out from under the hoodie he wore and took a long look at his very pretty face. He seemed very familiar, but she couldn't for the life of herself figure out why.
“Winnie,” She spoke up in a playful tone, “is this your boyfriend? He is cute.” Becca teased with a wink. Astarion couldn't help but chuckle a bit.
“A-Ah! N-No! We're just friends!” Winnie said, getting very embarrassed. Astarion suddenly snapped his head towards her, a bit shocked at her words.
WHAT?!
Winnie ignored him the questioning looks he was giving her. She leaned over towards Becca. “I'm just helping him out. He's really really shy….” Winnie muttered to her. Astarion stood there arms crossed as he glared at Winnie slightly, eyebrow twitching.
“Oh, okay.” Becca responded, scanning and bagging up Winnie’s things. “That'll be 29.50.”
Winnie paid for the supplies before walking out, Astarion stomping after her. She put the bags into the trunk of her motorcycle before she finally acknowledged his glaring.
“What?” She asked.
“Just friends? After everything we've been through, you and I are just friends?!” Astarion almost hissed out, but his tone sounded far more hurt than angry.
“We literally just met a few days ago.” Winnie said, a bit confused. She backed up a bit, flinching at his tone.
“I wasn't lying when I said I fell in love with you over and over! I..I…Did something happen? Do you not like me anymore?” His voice sounded a bit hoarse. Winnie’s heart shattered as she noticed he looked like he was on the verge of tears.
“Astarion…” She said softly before approaching him. “I do like you. I like you a lot, but you don't really know me ... .The person in the game, the brave strong beautiful adventurer. That's not me.”
Astarion huffed, trying to blink away the glassiness of his eyes.
“I fell in love with the sweet person who saved me, nothing else matters!” He took her hands in his. “Please…I want to be with you…”
“Honey, you don't even know my birthday.” Winnie said with a sad smile. “And I….I'm really not sure. I know everything was probably quite real for you, but to me it was like I was just a spectator. Someone enjoying a good story. Hell I've never even kissed anyone in real life so the idea of jumping into a serious relationship out of nowhere is honestly terrifying…” Winnie said and looked off to the side. The silver haired male took a moment to regain his composure, wiping one of his eyes.
Winnie thought for a moment before looking back at him and gently squeezed his hands.
“Look, I don't have a lot of experience in this, but maybe we could start over? I could court you, maybe?”
“Oh….Y-Yes…Yes that would make me very…happy…” The vampire blinked away his tears before mustering up a smile. Winnie released his hands, before hesitantly moving in closer. She thought about going in for a hug before she noticed him lean closer, lips puckered.
Quickly she stopped his mouth with her index finger.
“I'm…Not ready for that just yet…” She said with a sad smile as he pulled back.
“Of course, apologies…I misunderstood.” He said feeling a bit embarrassed. Winnie quickly decided to just pull close for a hug before anything else happened. Astarion relaxed a bit, taking comfort in her embrace, and quickly wrapping his arms around her. It was difficult. His relationship had now practically been set back to stage one.
~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~
After Astarion had calmed down and the two of them left the Corner Store. Winnie decided to keep her word about beginning a courtship with her flamboyantly fanged friend.  The night was still young and a date was the perfect excuse for Winnie to stop somewhere to look for something edible to sate her own hunger. Unfortunately there was little the pale elf could enjoy at such establishments, but Winnie did have one idea.
Astarion looked over Winnie’s shoulder, his eyes widened in awe at the bright lights of the city. It was rather beautiful, making the night much more pleasant and allowing him to see so much more color than he usually would at this time.
Winnie eventually stopped, bringing the motorcycle to a halt as they arrived at a large pleasant smelling building. The air was filled with the scent of meat and other savory dishes.
Winnie got off the bike before quickly adjusting the hood on Astarion's head, making sure his ears were not visible.  Winnie then took her vampiric companion inside before ordering a table for the two.  She sat across from him in a booth, looking down at her hands shyly.
“I know it might be hard to believe with my charms and devastatingly good looks, but I've actually never been on a date before, not a real one anyway.” Astarion chuckled a bit.
“What about before you were turned? Surely you'd have been on a date then?” Winnie frowned.
“Perhaps, but I can't exactly remember much from before. It might as well not have happened.” He sighed, looking off as a waitress walked towards the table. She was rather beautiful, long blonde hair, blue eyes, a waspy waist and thick curves in all the right places.
“What can I get you both?”  She asked.
“Oh, something full bodied and red.”  Astarion said and looked back at Winnie.
“Red wine and a pinjacolada please.” Winnie said as she glanced up at the waitress, eyes staring enviously at her nearly perfect bodice.
“Ah and some fried chicken fingers, and um….Can you get maybe get us an extremely rare steak?” Winnie asked feeling a bit clumsy and embarrassed about how her last line was worded.
“An extremely rare steak?” The waiter looked at Winnie like she had grown a second head.
“I don't know if we're allowed to-”
“Be a dear, and fetch me something as bloody as possible won't you beautiful?” Astarion turned towards the waitress, his tone dripping with charm, his ruby red eyes almost hypnotic as he gave her a flirtatious wink.
The waitress’s face turned bright red.
“Y-Yes! Yes of course!” She sputtered, a giddy grin spreading across her face. Winnie felt a twinge a jealousy shoot through her. She understood why he did that, but it didn't make it feel any better. The pudgy female took out her cellphone as Astarion began to ramble on about something. Something about how dull all of the people here seemed, and how abhorrent their attires were.
Winnie began looking on Tumblr, noticing a notification about TheRespectfulBard posting a new BG3 fanfiction. Though something else caught Winnie's eye as she skimmed through the Bard’s blog.  Apparently the bard was also looking for a mod that had been recently removed from the Nexus Mod page. However the modification they were looking for happened to be a mod that added a few new overpowered attacks to the game. Winnie quickly looked through the comments and reblogs to find someone saying the mod was made by a user named ShadowMommy69.
Oh God…….It was made by a simp…..
“Winnie? Winnie? Are you even listening to me!?” Astarion spoke up, sounding a bit annoyed.
“Ah! Sorry…I got a bit distracted….” Winnie hearted TheRespectfulBard’s post before putting her phone in her pocket.
“Honestly darling if you can't pay attention I might have to find a way to punish you.~” He teased, his hand reaching over to hold hers from across the table.
“Oh shut up.” Winnie rolled her eyes with a grin, her cheeks burning up. Astarion was just eating up all of Winnie’s overly flustered reactions. They were honestly all too cute. He looked at her with soft round eyes, wanting nothing more to plant kisses all over her pudgy little face.
“I've got your order!” The waitress from before brought in their food and drinks. Her hips swayed as she strutted over and set them down on the table. Blue eyes roamed over Astarion’s face and body, though he didn't seem particularly interested. The smell of blood from the meat hit him like a truck, making his mouth water. Winnie immediately began to nibble on her chicken, but her eyes were glued on that woman.
“I hope you both enjoy…. Especially you.~” The blonde said, seductively running a finger over Astarion's chest, making him stiffen.
“Um lady he doesn't like to be touch-” Winnie tried to object, though her mouse like voice was completely ignored.
“I'm getting off at ten just so you know.” She winked at him before wandering off. Winnie glared at her strutting form.
“Creepy bitch…” She muttered under her breath. That skank was so not getting a tip. Astarion cleared his throat before dusting off the front of his jacket, acting as if the waitress had got him dirty.
“Well, now that that's over. I think I have something to attend to.” His looked down at the streak which was practically dripping with blood.
Winnie bit her lip. She wouldn't lie. This was a bit gross.
Winnie grabbed her drink, slowly sucking it down as she attempted to ignore the vampire in front of her, cutting up the steak and sucking the blood off. She couldn't imagine what was probably going through the head of any on lookers.
“Oh my God he is so fucking hot.” Winnie’s ears perked up at the waitress’s voice as she gossiped with her friends.
“Who's girl with him? Think they're together?”
“Fuck no! Have you seen her? Probably his sister or something.”
Winnie rolled her eyes and glanced back at her food. She didn't really feel very hungry anymore. She looked down at her stomach. The round, plumpness of it made her feel so disgusting. It wouldn't be long before Astarion realized he had more options. Better looking options.
“Are you alright my sweet?” Astarion's concerned voice brought her gaze back up.
“I'm fine I guess…A bit tired if I'm honest…” She said tapping her fingernails to the table.
“Well then, perhaps we should get you home so you can get your beauty rest hm? Not that you need it of course! You're already the most beautiful person here.” The elf said sweetly.
“Yeah, let's go.” Winnie nodded, the two left their table and Winnie payed for the food at the register. She side eyes the waitress from before who was still gossiping with her friends. Winnie turned ready to head out the doors before she was suddenly snatched up by Astarion.
“I just want you to know once we get home. I am going to make you scream my name.” He said, his husky voice purposely raised loud enough for everyone to hear.  Winnie immediately buried her embarrassed face into his neck. Despite being ready to faint she also couldn't help but let out a series of giggles at his bluntness.
The waitress from before looked over with a shocked and frankly pissed expression. The vampire smirked slightly before tugging Winnie outside.
It was around eleven o'clock when they arrived back home. Winnie got off her bike with a yawn before looking over at Astarion who's hood had once again fallen off due to the motorcycle ride.
Since they were home though, she saw no point in fixing it again.
“I think that was an absolutely delightful first date, my love.” Astarion said as the two walked over towards the front door. “Don't you agree?”
“Shit.” Winnie stopped in her tracks.
“Oh come on! It wasn't that bad! Actually I don't think it was bad at all!” Astarion crossed his arms with a scoff.
“No! Shit!” She pointed at the front door which was cracked open about two feet.
“Oh, oh dear.” The vampire exclaimed before his companion rushed inside. He quickly followed after her as she zoomed into her bedroom.
“Maddie!? Maddie!” She called looking under the bed and in her closet before checking the bathoom. Astarion went into the bedroom and inhaled, trying to pinpoint the scent of the sweet little kitten’s blood. Was it nearby? However, his red orbs suddenly shot open at the echo of barking coming from outside.
“Maddie!” Winnie cried in fear.

Note from The ChaoticDruid: Been so hyped to get this chapter out! We have a lead on who caused Astarion to suddenly become sentient and it looks like a Shadowheart lover lol. A Shadowheart simp if you will! Also I know a lot of people would probably think Winnie's crazy for not wanting to jump right into a serious romance with Astarion, but I just feel like there are some things we'd love to fantasize about, but might not be too sure about in real life. Besides the girl is very romantically awkward. If anyone has any ideas on how to hide Astarion's ears better I'm open to suggestions, oh and PLEASE tell me what you think of the chapter! I love hearing all the comments about stuff, really makes my day.
Also fuck, Maddie's in danger! Somebody do something!

This one is currently winning on my little motivation poll so here we go
SEPERATED LEO AU!!! (because we don't have enough of those already lol)
Link to original post
So, I wanna talk more about how they all refound each other (link to how they met here)
Just to recap, Big Mama has Mikey, Draxum has Raph, and Splinter has Donnie. Big Mama's in her Nexus Hotel, Draxum is in NYC with a cloaking broach, and Splinter's in the ever iconic sewers.
Big Mama is actually a very kind mother to Mikey! She loves her little baby, and especially loves how he has her beloved Lou's smile. She spoils him to death and lets them express himself however she'd like. (If you haven't picked up on it yet, Mikey is genderfluid in this au and generally presents as a feminine man) Mikey absolutely adores skirts and zip-up hoodies, and usually wears a very bright suit top with a big orange ball gown skirt to formal events that Big Mama matches at Mikey's whims (I cannot draw for the life of me so if anyone is willing to draw this for me I will work out some kind of trade with you if you'd like 🙏)
But yeah, Big Mama does not let her fight in the Nexus, and has even toned down the brutality of the Nexus due to Mikey's pleading. There aren't any more lethal fights and she rarely makes binding, lifelong contracts because it made her baby upset to see all the sad and scared people.
They are a very cute duo and both genuinely love each other very much
Tumblr media
Then there's Draxum amd Raph! Draxum luckily snagged two cloaking broaches before his lab exploded and slapped them on both him and his 2 year old son before heading up to the surface. The two of them then got a apartment in the.....*shuddder*........human world. Draxum tries to hide them in mostly secret, only leaving the house for groceries and necessities, but eventually realizes that poor Raphie is very lonely.
This is made so much worse when he meets the little girl downstairs and wants so desperately to follow her to school after their playdates.........Draxum finally caves.
With the help of Mr. and Mrs. O'Neil, he enrolls Raphie in the same Kindergarden as April and lets him finally go to school after years of homeschooling. Raphie struggles with the transition a bit, but eventually he gets the hang of it and thrives! Draxum encourages him to join as many clubs as he can (without getting overwhelmed of course) and is his biggest fan.
Once Draxum is able to settle down, he's actually a huge soccer mom and goes to all of Raphie's events, he gets totally embarrassed sometimes. Draxum and the O'Neils are really good friends and try to have dinner at least once a week
But once again, a very happy family! They struggle to show it sometimes, but they truly love each other and only want what's best for each other
Tumblr media
Then we have Donnie and Splinter! Splinter was mutated with the DNA from his pet rat that he picked up on his travels with Big Mama and Draxum to get the turtles, and he was only able to grab Donnie and retreat to the sewers before Draxum's while lab collapsed. He, along with the other two, belive his partners and other children to be dead, so he never goes searching for them. Instead, he raises his son in the sewers on his own, foraging for all that they need just like in canon.
However, their sewer home is PREEEEEEEETY nice, since Donnie doesn't really doesn't have anything better to do other than make their home as nice as possible. He's has all major appliances working since he was 6 and only makes improvements from there. He also has his little pet project, but Splinter doesn't know about that yet!!!!
Speaking of Splinter, he varies pretty dramatically from canon. He's a lot less depressed because he had a much better experience with the yokai world and doesn't feel nearly as ashamed to BE a yokai (or yokai-adjacent) and keeps himself in much better shape, helping him with the dysmorphia that he does have. Overall, Splinter's doing pretty well, and he's a pretty attentive parent overall!
He was able to access some of his funds from his Lou Jitsu days and pays for Donnie to go to online school, and by the time Donnie meets up with the rest of his family at 11, he's halfway through high school work and has plans to go on to college so that he can start building up his tech empire by the time he's 18
But yeah, yet again, a overall happy parent/child relationship!
Tumblr media
(Then there's Leo. All the angst had to go somewhere, right???)
Moving on! Now, the adults all lived separately with each of their respective kid, but when Raphie was about 8, he got really sick. Like, really really sick. Draxum went to as many human doctors that he could trust, but none of them were able to figure out what was wrong with his baby. He finally musters up the courage to go down to the Hidden City, and finds out that Raphie has Mystic Overload Syndrome. While he's running around trying to find stuff to help his little boy (he's so affectionate guys), Raphie sneaks out! He starts running around the Hidden City unbroached, and he feels truly seen for the first time in his life.
While running around, he literally runs into another turtle yokai, one who's dressed in expensive orange clothes...........
This post got REALLY long, so stay tuned for more! Next post will probably be how Draxum and Big Mama finally met, and then how Splinter and Donnie come into play!
(Don't worry about Leo this isn't about him he's fine)
First // Previous // Next
(Also stay tuned for the name reveal of the AU!

Hello!! I have a few headcanons to share!! :D
•Puppet and Jack are probably on the Autism spectrum, and/or have ADHD
•Sun is Caderomantic and Caderosexual (Someone who has become Aromantic/Asexual due to past trauma)
•Jack doesn’t like Sun and Dazzle bonding not only because he thinks that Sun is also her best friend, but I believe because he knows about July 16th and Dazzle being Evelyn. I think that he’s scared it will happen again and Sun will hurt her. And I think he’s also scared of being replaced by Sun.
•Solar Flare is actually really good at playing the banjo, and his favorite song to play is ‘I Will Wait’ by Mumford & Sons
•Earth is half Lunar’s sister, half his adoptive mother (I mean, have you SEEN the way she scolds him like a mother does to her child?)
•Sometimes when Solar and Moon are working and they get tired, they fall asleep on each other. (Has happened before, will happen again)
•After Earth asked Solar to be her brother, he was pretty chill about it, however after she left he started crying of joy and freaking out.
•Nexus keeps a picture of his family in his pocket
•Dark Sun likes calling Nexus mean words as a joke
•Whenever Eclipse smiles smugly his mouth forms into the shape of a cat lip :3
•Sunshine (EaPS) has made a foam box with LEDs in it so when Eclipse and Puppet tried to turn the lights off he was protected. However after they found out, they burned it
•Earth keeps plushies of all her siblings that she likes hugging sometimes. Her favorite is the Monty plush which she hugs when sad and when going to sleep
•Dazzle and Jack like trampolines
•Lunar is Polyromantic/Polysexual (someone who is attracted to many, but not all, genders)
Yeah, that’s all for now… eh, sorry the list is so long lol. I just randomly came up with 3/4ths of them as I was writing ha-ha…
Thanks for headcanons!

my friends said tfone Quintus Prime seems to use the chakram as a weapon. I actually see him holding a donut-shaped metal object in his hands. so his fighting style would be quite powerful, I guess? he could wear the chakram on his arm like a bracelet, spin it around to defend himself, and then flick his wrist to grab and swing it when needed....It's a unwieldy weapon, I honestly didn't expect him to be able to handle such a thing. Perhaps he could take aim at an intruder like his brother Nexus sneaking into his lab and hit it from a distance. I'm sure the Quintessens were afraid of their Creator at this point so they needed in cowards like Sentinel lol.

Slight rant I guess lol
I'm probably most likely wrong about Sun cause like honestly I doubt that VAs know what depressive psychosis is and guilt delusion and all that stuff so there's no way that my perspective on Sun is right but it's whatever I guess idk so anyway..
In laes episode I think that Sun was like "why Moon still blames himself when things are my fault".. Sun (at least to me) always seemed to want to help Moon realize that the things that happened to them aren't his fault.. or that's what Sun always thought..
And it somewhat fits with what he told Earth "sometimes I don't know how to help".. he sounded sad.. because he was never able to help Moon realize that things aren't his fault that Sun really don't blame Moon.. but himself..
To me it seems that Sun doesn't want to talk with Jack about his feelings anymore because he said that Jack didn't understand him.. and I really think that it's all about the guilt that Sun feels for how Moon and later Nexus turned out to be.. their suffering and mental issues..
I feel like Sun doesn't care about what will happen to him as long as he won't die solely because he doesn't want to leave his family.. because he knows exactly how it feels when your family member dies.. he went through this so many times..
For me Sun doesn't want to share his feelings on any matter that may reveal how guilty he feels.. that he blames himself and feels like he's a bad person..
But like I said.. it's how it looks like to me.. but 1) I'm not the writer of this show so idk what VAs has planned for Sun 2) things could've pretty much changed regarding Sun's story arc cause like this show has over 2 years so a lot of things happened in VAs lives that could shape later parts of story and 3) I heavily doubt that Sun actually has depressive psychosis cause it's not that common and like Davis said himself they only show stuff that either they themselves experienced or their friends.. which is understandable tbh..
I'm trying to comes to terms with it.. that only I and maybe just a few peeps see Sun this way - depressive psychosis with guilt delusion etc - cause it's highly unlikely that's true..
As much as I doubt that Sun will become Dark Sun 2.0 it's still more likely than what I think about Sun tbh.. heck even theory that Dark Sun is actually Sun from the future is more likely than what I think about Sun..
And that's okay cause this is VAs story and not mine..
It only hurts a little solely because I had learned the hard way that people don't understand how it is to feel guilty on delusional level.. how it is to feel like you're the worst person ever.. but that's my personal experiences..
But idk VAs and their personal experiences that they later base their characters on.. so I'm trying to get over it a little bit..
If later it'll turn out that I was completely wrong about Sun I might continue writing my fic as an AU.. if I really will still feel like it.. cause for now it kinda sucks that no one understands..
This is also why I lost some of the passion that I had for theorizing for sams.. or about Sun.. cause those folks who were rude me made me realize that most people don't get it how it is to feel like you're evil and everything is your fault..
And that's okay but it still hurt how they went about it.. how they ridiculed me and were mean to me..
But maybe it's not that bad cause at least it helped me distance myself from sams and Sun.. like it doesn't matter that no one gets it.. I can't theorize for shit lol but that's fine..

You find some poor sucker of a boy who's gotten his privates stuck in a glory hole. What do you do?
Wellll lookie what we have here ~ it's a sleepy prince. What ever shall I do with this lazy boy who got himself all stuck in a situation? Good thing I always come prepared, and speaking of coming.
Ahh, here's my massage oil and my wide makeup brush which is ever sooo perfect for covering the curvy surface of a royal jewel bag~ Do you hear me darling? Don't go all shy on me now. We're going to get to know each other sooo well, oh yesss we are~ we're going to bond over this hole ~ I'm going to get to know you sooo well and you're going to get to know me tooo ~ and by the end you're gonna call me mama and that's a Miss Amy promise~
and sooo let's carefully glide the brush up the surface to coat that sensitive royal area with shiny oil. Ah, ah, seeee he's trying to press closer to the brush. But no, we keep juuuust the tips of the makeup brush gliding on that ticklish cute boy part. Ooh it's sooo tough to be teased on the jewels only ~ the royal rod is sooo jealous, just look at him bob and protest~ don't worry dearie pie, we have a brush just for you tooo~
Extra coating of oil hereeee and there we gooo ~ my thin nimble paintbrush is so good at teasing this dipstick it's almost ~criminal~ aww him wants it sooo bad ~ but noooo mama isn't giving anything more but this tiny soft brush up the underside, up the vein to the tip. Tickle tickle ~ even if he could pull out he wouldn't because he luuuuvs his mama tickles sooo much ~ yesss, tickle mama always makes it feel soo good huh?
Are you still awake? I'm quite good at reading dick faces and you look positively flushed, like you might pass out ~ don't you dare cutie, because that won't stop me anyway. Oh yes, I'll make you ticklecum while you dream and you'll think it's a ten armed octopus woman with a penchant for handjob tickling boys upside down ~ and somehow, you're all ten of them ~ I bend time and space you silly doll and in every reality you are my plaything ~ yess, my tickle brush is the nexus of your universe and you exist solely to spill your silly giggle drops for me ~
Which is why I have my friend Mrs. Wand for you ~ Mmhmmm ~ you hear the buzzing huh? You want it? Yeahh? You want the buzziesss? Mmmmh that tickles so good doesn't it, right on your tip? Right under the head? Oooh I know, I know darling, but that's all you get. Nope. Mrs. Wand is turning off now. Mmm Mmm ~ nah -ahhh not yet, not cumming for you cutie boyyy ~ it's feather time. Where are you going? You don't want feather time? Better than~~~ hammer time~!!
Oooh sweetie pie what a twitch, what a wince! ~ I'm only kidding you knowww ~ had to get you off that edge somehow ~ and now my cute purple fluffy feather gets to work you back up and my nails can twirl and dance on these balls. Yesss, bouncy bouncy ball balls ~ Why are they called balls anyway? They're really not like that at all, like the shape and the consistency ~ mmm see? See what I mean? And is this one bigger than the other one? Come on now, don't be all shy ~ that's just a feather on your cocky cock a doodle doooo ~ and why do we call it that? Are you a rooster? Do you go cock a doodle doo?
Maybe back in the olden days giggle girls like me would go to the boy barn and tickle the silly boy of the day on his royal parts until he sang like you. Ahh, what a dulcet way to wake ~ the cry of the boy's gigglecum ~ do you want to be my giggle rooster? Well you are a silly goose ~ and guess what? It's handjob timeee ~ now, now don't fret. I'm going to jerk you so much you silly boy. Yeah? You wanna cum? You bet you fucking do ~ but oooh no.... sorryy I just realized this is a no gigglecum glory hole. Yeahh, the writing is on this side. But don't worry, I'll keep this feather riiiight under your tip so you don't feel lonely while you come off that edge. I knowwww it tingles soooo bad huh? You were soooo close~! I can't believe you didn't cum there~

Ahti and Warlin are probably such good friends. They have so much in common!
They're both mysterious, timeless paranatural beings, unaffected by the manufactured realities of nightmares, who can travel across places through an interdimensional nexus that takes the shape of a building that's not easily accessed by normal means.
Ahti goes in and out of The Oldest House unobstructed. The building has probably shown Ahti some sights as a token of gratitude for all the upkeep.
And Warlin maybe has seen and been through everything, willing his own Door in the Oceanview to take him when and where he wants and needs to be.
I wonder if it's the Oceanview where they met for the first time. Or where they've never met.
How that conversation went. When Door offered a Janitor job to Ahti in his Talk Show Studio when there was no more work on the Bureau. Ahti has no closet in the Nightmare version of the Oceanview as far I remember.
How that conversation went. When Ahti unlocked a Door for a tired Warlin in the Motel, so he wouldn't need to go through the Janitor's closet.
How that conversation went. When each one noticed the other had always been in the Oceanview.
I wonder if Warlin has ever set foot within The Oldest House. Such event being a mere possibility means he has. Some time and some universe else.
And there are more connections and reflections if you will.
Ahti meets Jesse who never once complains about her given title, Janitor's Assistant. She's happy about it, she knows the ins and outs of the job very well. Maybe one day she'll be handed the keys to the Motel and command of the House itself, the Gods themselves sang about it
And so I’m drawn ever deeper In the Oldest House and all these empty rooms This vacant, spellbound mystery motel Where I’m the keeper, where I set the rules
He's never once lied to Jesse, or hidden information from her. Sure he may seem a bit obscure, if you've had to learn a second language then you know how infuriating the barrier is sometimes, and the little rush of pride you may feel in refusing to try to translate idioms, and Jesse seems to have compassion or intuition of this fact, maybe even both. And she never resented anyone for her lack of understanding.
Ahti knew what Jesse wanted and needed, and immediately pointed her in the right direction, the elevator is just over there. Go find your brother, get rid of the pests. And scrub some of the mold in your way there.
He was even there in her Nightmare, once again a guide. Encouraging her, and proud when the third time around she got a grip on herself to awaken and merge with her Guardian Angel.
Same and not the same with the writer. Another lost soul in a Nightmare, this one of his own making. Although with him, Ahti seemed wary about unlocking the door. Was Ahti trying to protect Alan from himself? He knew the writer had not mastered his Stalking Demon yet. And, he's just the Janitor you see, not a Gatekeeper.
How many times did Ahti talk to Jesse in The Oldest House? Maybe it's the same number he talked to Alan in the Dark Place.
And Warlin? He's got one unwilling disciple, playing something like a twelve-dimensional chess with him as a piece. A center piece?
And his approach is, particular, to say the least. Unlike Ahti's clear waters, Door is obscuring as much as possible from Timothy. There's no upfront information here. And Warlin knows the outcome, maybe. Tim will eventually know what is going on, the why of every one of Warlin's actions, perhaps Tim will even understand him, for there was at least once a different version of both of them that ended up working together. There was a path for Jack Joyce to follow Martin Hatch.
Funny how the Janitor's Assistant and the Unwilling Disciple met and worked together in a different version of themselves.
I wonder, if Warlin shifted into this version because here, when she'd emerge, it would be her the one to shoot the man in charge of the shady institution that "employed" her? Where instead of dying in an explosion like a supernova, she'd carry a Star within her? An echo that didn't need to be Wilder, where she had the space and guidance to come into full and total control, unlike the disease of time and loneliness that wreaked havoc in Door himself once/always?
And the woman Warlin is worried about in this version of this universe? His very own daughter. But don't tell anyone, that's not his style.
How excited must he be for the moment Saga gets to see through it all. They'll maybe even complain about Mr. Wake, and how he made a habit of a writing other people's daughters into his story. And toast to make sure it doesn't happen a third time.

you know it truly amazes me how you can't do practicly anything on tiktok or search the thing you like without getting absolutley shat on
Like I'm feeling a little in the mood for rottmnt angst A lil bit of that kick in the gut, and I can't go 3 minutes without one of those made in 5 minutes max videos that's just background video and text over it Saying shit like "Yall need to stop with the rottmnt angst it's getting annoying" or "the rottmnt angst artist need to chill out" or even better "The rottmnt fandom needs to stop the angst it's just a show for kids"
First off, if angst isn't your thing, you can block it or just scroll pass it OR you know what if youre feeling like a little shit you can hate read it or whatever but keep the comments TO YOURSELF
Second off I checked what the content of most of these people is And it's always goddamn always those 10 second background videos with text over it
nothing more
I dare these people to even try to draw the shape of leo's head, or write out something more than 40 words I accualy dare them. do it.
Also the same goes for shipping over there
Let's say you see a legal completly normal ship you don't like Example let's say leo x usagi or raph x mona
What you wanna do is scroll or block it
NOT make up info to make others stop shipping it, I'm sick and tired of people non stop saying that usagi or mona are adults or that their entire characters are being love intrest in the fandom's eyes Because if you look at any of the fanfic's or fan content of those Yeah it's easy to find content where there love intrest's but it is hard to find content where there ONLY love intrest
People love mona so much for the fact that she's a badass warrior who loves her planet and people they often give her more backstory focused stories that explore how she would feel depending on where the writers story will go or already went, I have never seen anyone maker her just a typical love intrest (witch honestly suprised me)
Usagi? People have more free will with his interpretation's so he has many many diffrent faces backstories, personalities but often people make him focused on something in their stories, examples being, getting back home, protecting others, getting over something, fighting in battle nexus and exploring how it would be Etc. Etc. That mixed with being a love intrest
The only times when these two can be seen as just love intrest and nothing more is in
Edit's/tiktok content where everything is short af (and even then sometimes people give em backstories and their own lore it really amazes me sometimes lmao)
short (usualy) tagged as fluff without plot fics on ao3 (witch you can litellary tag out SO easily)
Little comics/some art pices That HAVE VERY STORT LIMITS
also this might suprise you it really might but DRAWING IS HARD AND TAKES ALOT OF TIME SAME GOES FOR MAKING THE IDEA UP
And when it comes to their ages we all know there not adults, littelary where did anyone mention mona being an aduly ever, and the only times when usagi and leo accualy interact is when there in similiar if not the same ages
(in 2003 usagi and leo are close friends and Both teens, in the early comics there both adults when they first meet, even in 1987 version there both shown to be close if not the same age, the ONLY TIME where leo and usagi have very diffrent ages is in 2012 and honestly i have a little theory on why specificly that version had them be you know that but that's for another post)
Seriously what the fuck is tiktok's problem with any form of fanon content? You want the fandom to die? It aint gonna happen, you either get used to some bad stuff existing there and there and ignoring it (reporting then ignoring it if it's really bad) OR you keep quiet OR you will get banned by alot of creators after crying in their comments, then cry when you can't find something they made anymore
Tiktok man, good for daydreaming to the sounds, looking at edits and for some art trends but litellary can't let anything else exist on there or else you'll explode
(Also I bet if some of the fanon angst made it to the accual show they would deepthroat that shit right up and call it writing of ceuntry)

WIP tag game
RULES: Post the last sentence you wrote (fanfic / original / anything) and tag as many people as there are words in the sentence.
Thanks for the tag, @tragediegh
Is anyone actually posting just one sentence? I'm sure not. I'm working so hard to pull this fic kicking and screaming from my brain, so you're gonna enjoy a whole ass snippet whether you want to or not. This isn't the last thing I wrote, but its close enough and it'll make more sense out of context. Also, I like it better. I do what I want.
This is from a fic I am writing about the Fool's early days at Buckkeep. I am forever thinking about his relationship with Shrewd, and wanted to explore more deeply how he came to love his king so much that he was willing to abandon everything he worked towards to be by his side.
“And so you propose to be rid of him? To murder my grandson?” “Better now, when I can ensure a peaceful end.” Chade says quietly. “Leave him, and I may be forced to resort to more violent means. A man is much harder to kill than a boy.” “I do not like it,” Shrewd murmurs, and yet he seems to be considering the option. The child is gripping the poker he never put down, his entire body thrumming with tension. The intricately carved handle presses indents into his flesh, but he does not notice. This is the nexus he has Dreamed of, the one where he can save his Catalyst. He knows it as intrinsically as he knows his own name. All around him the possibilities unfurl into a multitude of futures. He saves his Catalyst, but only the first time. He loses his Catalyst, and then himself. He saves his Catalyst, again and again, but it is not enough, and his icy end fills him with despair. He loses his Catalyst, but he himself lives on, and on, and on, and the everyday the empty skies remind him of his failure. And, following the thinnest of paths, brilliant in its possibility and yet so fragile, he saves his Catalyst, and his Catalyst saves the world. The Path divides again from there, and in his favorite divergence, as he lays dying, he can just make out the shapes of dragons flying overhead through the ice of his grave.
I need more writer friends who haven't already been tagged. If you're seeing this and have a WIP you want to share, consider yourself tagged!

☁️🩵✨AEOLUS (CANONS)✨🩵☁️
(I was bored, not headcanon btw)
They are Very shy and self conscious
They’re the same age as nexus, they came around the time after V2 eclipse died.
They’re bigender and can go by any pronouns. Usually goes by “he” or “they/them”
they’re pansexual, recipromantic, and Achillean but super closeted. They’re afraid no one will like them back or not be interested. They don’t know what love feels like.
They have angelic singing voice, that’s useful for soothing crying babies and anxious children. They like to sing in private when they’re alone. Nexus likes to call him his “little song bird”
They are very popular, despite their popularity, they still feel very insecure about themselves around others because they secretly didn’t like to have so much attention but, they try to hide it for the sake of the children, they’re friends and themselves.
They enjoy science, and likes to share out some ideas. He and new moon hang out privately to enjoy scientific activities together and sci-fi exploration.
They have a stage name, cloud drop/sky drop
They have HUUUGE hyper fixation with clouds (it’s called nephophile), they love seeing clouds, how they can takd shape and look beautiful in the sky. New moon would take them out to do cloud watching because he enjoys them being so excited.
They are shorter than everyone else, but slightly shorter than ruin. For reasons, they are made innocent and less intimidating for shy kids and babies.
They love soft textures and have a plushie collection
He and nexus are soulmates. They are independent and are dependent on each other. Aeolus always accompany him in the hardest times, especially during solars death. Nexus hates everyone except for Aeolus because he was the only one that companied him, everyone else gave up on him but he didn’t.
Aeolus HATES Monty because of his brutish nature, (and for shooting his bf) but he Earth are besties :)
He and nexus had a secret relationship and didn’t want to reveal anything because they are awkward. They hang out together in private and don’t want to let anyone know where they go off too. Solar was the first to discover their relationship but agreed to keep it secret. Solar respects their privacy and lets them to decide if they ever feel like coming out or not. (Big brother Solar approves 👍)
They enjoy cult of the lamb. He and Sun have a BIG hyper fixation of the game and play for HOURS through the day night.
They love to do ballet and aerial dance, they practice doing they’re poses for hours to get ready for performances. they practice on the wire the first time and got tangled up new moon had to
They have favorite TV shows/movies: Mlp, frozen, Cinderella, Snow White, the nut cracker, Alice in wonderland
They been givin nicknames, specifically by new moon/nexus: “Fluffy, snowy, snowflake, angel, bunny, cuddle bug, puppy eyes, starlight, little dreamboat, princess, darling, babe, love, sweat heart, little song bird, baby doll, precious”

A Few Cool Things about Into The Deep!
I'm so nervous about releasing this. Lol.
I was inspired by a friend to make this thingy. Sort of a way to show off some of my stuff, ya know? Also, here's my friend's AU blog. (@ninjago-the-madness-leaders) It sounds super cool, so definitely check out if you want! Okay, let's get started!
1: Many mysteries from Master Of The Mountain will be solved. Can't say to much about that without spoiling things, but yeah!
2: It has plenty of fan service in terms of the canon ships. (I.E. Jaya, Kailor, Pixane.) The story flipping starts with a Jaya wedding. Lol. 💜💙🤍 💙🧡 So if you're hungry for more content with them, it's got plenty!
3: It's inspired by classic literature from authors like C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, and Jules Vern.
4: It has Cole x Vania in it! (Yeah, I guess most people don't go for it. But if you dooooo, this definitely the fan season for you! Because they have plenty of cute moments!🤍🖤💛)
5: We get to take a deep look into the characters and who they are, along with what shaped the them. (You could say the title "Into The Deep" has a double meaning.)
6: It has plenty of fun new characters. Some including Rocky, Cole's Grandfather. Morgratha, the Amber Witch. And Digger, her henchman.
Well, I hope you all liked this! If you have any questions, feel free ask! Thanks for reading! - ✒️🐉
Tag List: @shatteredhope123 @nocturnal-nexu @dexter-the-dog @aroninshonour 😁👋)
Want to be added to the tag list? Just ask! That way you can stay updated on Ninjago: Into The Deep all the time!😁

Day 10: Mushrooms
(Part of the Grand Not-Coven of Palo-Alto series.)
SAM WESSON'S GARDEN was a truly spectacular work of time, effort, engineering, and spell work. It was the first thing any visitor to his properly noticed from the street and a favored place for friends and family to gather to spend time together just chatting and enjoying each other's company. Even if you didn't have a lick of sensitivity to the supernatural and mystical energies, the Garden was a visual marvel of growth and care, at least some parts of it always in bloom no matter the season. If you were sensitive to mystical energies, it was a massive nexus of magic, from the carved stones and mosaics that marked out the footpaths and plant beds to the plants themselves. It was the focal point of the wards Sam had built around his house and extended to the house next door where Dean Smith lived, and it was where the anchor stones for the wards Sam maintained around the homes and businesses of his "network friends" and Palo Alto as a whole were kept, continually renewing and recharging with every sunrise, moonrise, and rainfall.
As a licensed herbalist and practicing witch, it was no surprise that the Garden held a lot of the plants and herbs Sam needed for various potions, tinctures, and poultices, grown fresh and harvested with care to dry and preserve. The large glass greenhouse at one end of the Garden, which connected to the main house via the Solarium, held the more "tempermental" plants in their specially warded pots and beds, the ones that Sam's FBI contacts really wanted to pretend didn't exist for one reason or another. There was even a section of the Garden devoted to growing fruits and vegetables which Sam used to cook and gave to or traded with other members of the network. Frankly, the only thing that was surprising to people who had learned the secrets of the Garden was that Sam would need to go anywhere else for some type of plant.
Specifically, mushrooms.
"It's not that there aren't mushrooms in the Garden," Sam explained as he led the way into the woods behind the house, Bones cheerfully bounding ahead before circling back to dance around her favorite human and his friends. "The act of foraging is itself a part of the ritual, much like harvesting. A reaffirmation of life and sustainability amid death and decay as part of the cycle of the natural world."
"And they're really safe to eat?" asked John Castiel Novak curiously, stepping around a fallen branch even as he split his attention between Sam and the mushroom guidebook the witch had given him.
"Some are," Sam nodded, then shrugged. "Some aren't. And some of them are only safe to eat in certain stages of their growth, so pay close attention to that guide book and if you aren't sure ask me or Bones to double check."
"Too bad we don't have a pig along for truffle hunting," Cas's twin, James Constantine Novak joked, and then yelped as the golden retriever abruptly stood up and changed into a golden-haired woman with her hands on her naked hips.
"I'd like to see a hog sniff out the good mushrooms of all types and warn you away from the bad ones even half as well as I can!" she snapped. Then her indignation melted away into a mischievous smirk as she added, "Besides, Dean said he was never doing that again after he got dirt up his nose that was still there when he changed back."
"Bones," Sam groaned as Cas and Jimmy exchanged slightly alarmed looks. To the twins, he explained, "It was a dare from Andy to see if I even could change someone who wasn't my familiar into an animal, and Jess suggested a truffle hog to see if we could find some wild growing truffles to save some money on ingredients. Dean volunteered to be the guinea pig, and, well.... actual pig."
"And it worked?" Jimmy asked with interest. "No negative side effects?"
"Dean gained a better appreciation for vegetables as a food group, so your mileage may vary," Bones snorted, then slipped back into her canine shape with a cheerful yip.
"I, on the other hand, was exhausted, which is the real reason he said never again," Sam explained, getting tandem nods. The twins were well acquainted with Dean's intense protective streak when it came to Sam. "So Bones conspired with Dean to learn the scents of every mushroom in these woods and a few that aren't so she could be my primary hunting partner."
As it should be, Bones whispered in Sam's mind, answering his small smile with a lolling canine grin. Sam may have left the world of hunting behind along with the Winchester name, but there were some aspects he just couldn't give up completely. He rather suspected that, with the way the Novak twins kept coming back with their increasingly flimsy excuses, the hunting world wasn't ready to be done with him, either.
He thought he might could live with that.

Eddie would have to wait until his lunch break to see this new, hot, weird chick. He wondered which flavor of weird she was. Art weird? Theater weird? Band weird? Weird weird? He shrugged. He liked weird. In other words, you’re the new girl in town, and Eddie is intrigued.
note: We're in the endgame now! There'll probably be one or two more chapters and an epilogue after this. 🖤 I'll compile and post a masterlist for this fic soon, too!

Your heels pounded on the pavement. The pressure patch bounced against your chest. Bitter wind dried your eyes. Ash swirled in the air, creating incomprehensible patterns. It contrasted the dark wall of smoke curtaining the street ahead. You skidded to a stop.
Why were you running towards a fissure? What the hell were you thinking?
You looked over your shoulder. Eddie stepped onto the street, shirt streaked with blood. You couldn’t run in his direction. He was too fast. He’d catch you, take you to Vecna.
Shit, you’d nearly done that yourself.
A roar like a tornado boomed in front of you.
You turned to the fissure. A massive arachnoid shape moved inside the smoke. You stepped back. The blacktop surrounding the fissure cracked further, making you retreat. Vines you’d only seen through the tumbler or in visions snaked into the air.
You couldn’t fight a thing made of smoke. You couldn’t beat back the vines.
Chittering and howls echoed from the fissure, reminding you of a wolf pack. Demodogs, according to Dustin. You’d heard them months ago. The primitive part of your brain had known then they were predators.
There was nowhere to hide. Eddie had already seen you, anyway. However, you couldn’t give up.
With a scan of the street, the only practical option was an alley on your left. You raced into it. Dumpsters, blocky AC units, and dented trashcans blurred as you ran.
A wood pallet soared on your right. It hit the brick wall and exploded into shrapnel.
You shielded your face in your elbow. A board smacked your side. Pain bloomed, muscles cramped. You twisted and gasped, stumbling over shattered pieces of wood.
Eddie stood yards away. From the street, the chittering increased in volume. Your shoulder knocked into a parked box-truck. He stepped forward, relentless and silent. You cursed as you bounced into the wall.
You had to keep moving, had to keep him away from Max.
You jogged into the narrow gap between truck and wall. It was a clear shot to the next street. Unfortunately, the fissure crossed the alley on the other side. Vines slithered up the broken buildings.
To your left, police barricades spanned the street. You couldn’t go right because that would lead you to the nexus. You ran left and realized you were drawing closer to the hospital. At the next intersection, you went left again.
Humvees, camo-painted trucks, and police cruisers rolled away. Plumes of ash spun in their wake. You ran onto the street and yelled for them to stop, but an attack helicopter whooshed overhead. It charged towards the nexus. You had to get out of here. The helicopter launched one of its missiles. A great, monstrous shriek answered. You covered your ears at the cacophony. The ground shook, and you bent your knees to keep your balance. A second later, the report from a blast rattled windows.
You looked back. Eddie steadied himself on the side of a parked car less than twenty feet away. With eyes on you, he pushed off.
You murmured, “Come and get me, baby,” before sprinting down the street.
You passed the police and fire stations, squinting against the falling ash. While you could seek shelter in either place, you didn’t know what Eddie would do to those who got in his way. And you didn’t want to think of what they’d do to Eddie if they saw him.
You needed him to pursue you — and only you.
The nearest fissure cutting through the street stopped you short. Vines zigzagged over the ground. Another monstrous shriek bellowed, and it reverberated in your heaving chest. A neighborhood of older homes sat across the way. You ran between two houses, certain no one was inside — not with how close the houses stood to the fissure.
You hid behind a large oak in the backyard and leaned on the trunk. In the distance, demodogs chittered and gunfire resounded. The hit to your side made itself known as you panted for air. You pressed your palm over it. Muscles spasmed. With a grimace, you repeated the healing spell under your breath. Heat sparked under your skin. Sweat prickled above your lip and at your hairline.
It took a small eternity for the heat to dissipate. You lifted your shoulder to stretch it out. The muscles complained, but it wasn’t a stitch in your side. That was good enough.
Glancing around, it was difficult to find your bearings. You weren’t sure it mattered where you were. Your primary concern was keeping Eddie occupied until you figured out what to do.
A twig snapped.
You whipped to the side to peek around the trunk. Nothing was out of place. No sign of Eddie, either.
Shit.
Had he given up?
No, making the hunted think they were safe was a horror-movie cliché.
You weren’t safe.
You turned to face the other backyards. Still no sign of Eddie. He was hiding and watching. You felt it. He would lose patience soon enough, though.
Instead of running, like your hind brain wanted you to, you walked away from the oak. He wasn’t going to kill you. Vecna didn’t want you dead yet. You marched farther into the neighborhood, navigating fences and darting between houses.
A wooded area bordered the neighborhood. That was a prime place to play hide-and-seek with your undead, psycho-controlled puppet of a boyfriend. Jesus Christ, what was your life? You paused on the curb at the end of a cul-de-sac. The woods lay beyond the arc of houses.
A fence gate clanged before Eddie walked around the corner of a house and stopped in the front yard. He’d smeared the blood from his chin up his sharp jaw. The blood on his scrubs had oxidized to a rust brown. From this distance and through the ash-fall, his cursed eyes could be mistaken for pale ones. It didn’t suit his face. He looked best with brown sparkling eyes and flushed cheeks. He looked best smiling. He looked best when he’d been yours.
But he wasn’t yours anymore — and you didn’t know if he’d ever be again.
The edges of your vision blurred. You took a stuttering breath. There had to be a way to get him back. If Vecna could animate him, you could restore him.
You stepped onto the grass, heading for the woods. Eddie matched your pace stride for stride. At the edge of the yard where manicured turned wild, he quickened his steps.
He wasn’t toying with you any longer.
You ran, graceless and bumbling, into the woods. The real fight started now. Under the canopy of ash-covered foliage, shadows deepened. Your heart pounded rabbit-fast. Branches and twigs snagged your sleeves and hair, scratched your exposed skin. You couldn’t hear anything beyond the sound of your panting breath.
After jumping the third log, your thighs almost gave out. You staggered to a thick tree and lay against it. Your temples throbbed with your forceful heartbeat. Sweat beaded down your face.
Sudden weight pressed you against the tree. The musty scent of dried blood filled your nose. Hands grabbed your hips.
“Got you.”
You gasped and tripped sideways. Eddie held the back of your jeans until you pushed him away. He caught your forearm until you wheeled it out of his grasp. You spun and bolted deeper into the woods.
He clawed at your shirt with every step, fingers scraping down your back. You lunged to the side. Arms hooked around you before lifting you off the ground. You kicked out and writhed. He swayed with you to expel your momentum. He then brought your upper body close and dragged his sharp teeth over the side of your neck.
You stiffened, thinking of the MP he’d killed.
This couldn’t be it. Eddie wouldn’t kill you. This couldn’t be what Vecna had planned. It made no sense. You had magic, for fuck’s sake.
“No, let me go!”
“Or what?”
He didn’t even sound out of breath.
You pushed against his arms.
“I don’t want to hurt you.”
“I’d like to see you try, witch.”
You arched your back, freeing your arms, and slapped your palms on his cold forearm. You concentrated all your energy into them. The air cooled. The temperature dropped so fast, you expected to see your breath fog. You shivered as goosebumps rose along your skin. You pushed the energy as heat into him.
He howled and released you.
You landed hard and fumbled forward. The energy vanished from your hands like it’d never been there. The air heated. Your forehead ached from the quick temperature change. However, you couldn’t let that stop you. Eddie was right behind you.
After lumbering into a tree, you found your balance and pushed off. You ran with the hope it was away from the houses and fissure.
You glanced back. Eddie was nowhere to be seen. You couldn’t slow to catch sight of him. Like before, you knew he followed you.
He darted out between two trees and tackled you into another. Your back struck the unyielding trunk. It knocked the breath from your lungs. He pressed his burnt forearm across your upper chest, pinning you to the tree.
You heaved for air and pushed at his elbow and wrist. His other hand went to your hip.
“You will see this through,” he said, leaning his weight on you. “It’s your responsibility.”
You shook your head. At one time, having him against you would’ve been a comfort. You would’ve wrapped your arms around him and buried your face in his neck.
He said, “We should thank you, you know. None of this would’ve happened if you hadn’t cleared the way.”
You hung your head and held onto his arm. He was right. You’d opened the proverbial door for Vecna.
“I know,” you said. “I thought I understood. I thought… I thought I could heal this place.”
He huffed.
“So arrogant.”
The corner of your mouth quirked.
“Yeah, so fucking arrogant. Just like Vecna.”
“But Source can do what you can’t.”
“Oh?” You met his colorless gaze. “Like make the world worse?” Searching his blank face, you said, “He’s going to kill everything.”
“Sometimes destruction is a means of restoration.”
“That’s not what you believe.”
“What do you know of what I believe?”
“I know you want to create.”
“I am creating — with Source.”
“I thought you wanted to create with me. You wanted to leave this town with me.”
“No, I—”
“Yes. Don’t you remember what you said on New Year’s? You said I inspire you. You want to write songs for me! You said you think about me every day!” You touched his cold cheeks. “You said you’d give me everything.” You inhaled and put weight into your words. “So, give. me. everything.”
The weight of magic overloaded your limbs. You fisted his shirt to stay upright. However, he was no stronger.
Together, you fell to the ground.
Through gritted teeth, he said, “No, I’m doing what needs to be done.”
“For who, huh? You? Me?” You bent closer, taking the risk he wouldn’t choke or bite you. “Don’t you care — about me — at all?”
You wanted to ask if he loved you anymore, but… That was too far, too much. You imagined all the venom Vecna would make him spit.
“I do this because I—” He blinked. “It has to be done.”
“Are you listening to yourself right now?”
“What?”
“He killed me. Vecna killed me. He took Max.” You motioned to your head and said, “He killed me,” before motioning to your heart.
“Then you should’ve stayed dead.”
“Well, here I am.” You threw your hands wide. “Just like you.”
“You’re pointless.” He moved in to drive his words home. “You’re a little rich girl slumming it. You have all this power, but you never make anyone’s life easier. You have it easy. You’re spoiled and entitled, and we’re glad we killed you.”
“Fuck you! He killed you, too!”
What he said couldn’t be true. That’s not what Eddie thought. Right? You weren’t… You couldn’t be… It must’ve been a ploy by Vecna to hit where it hurt. He’d pulled some doubt or negativity from your mind months ago.
“It had to be done,” Eddie said.
“And what’s he going to do when he gets what he wants, huh?”
“I…”
“Answer me! What’s he going to do to us?”
“He’ll…”
“He’ll kill us again, Eddie.”
“No, he—” He frowned, looking away. His mouth opened and closed. “No…”
“Yes!”
You grabbed his face and forced him to meet your gaze. You wouldn’t play into Vecna’s hands by abandoning Eddie. Too many people had done that already, and you refused to be another.
“Come back to me.”
He wrenched his head from your hold to hide his face.
“I can’t come back. No, I— I’m where I need to be. I’m whole here. I’m bigger than… Bigger than—”
“Come back, honey.”
He looked to the side, the corners of his mouth turned down.
“You know, I never told you how you feel to me,” you said. “What you feel like. I figured it out in Chicago. At the concert.” You followed the slope of his blood-covered jaw with your eyes. “With all those people around us, you still stood out to me. I couldn’t help but feel you… feel your warmth.” You rested your forehead on his temple and softly said, “You’ve always been a flame in the dark.”
He propped his hands on his knees, sagging.
You softly added, “He can’t make it out of the Upside Down without us. It’s you and me. It’s always been you and me.”
He pulled away to look at you.
“You and me?”
You nodded.
“However long we got.”
His face became a rictus of pain, eyes going full black. Gray veins wormed under his sallow skin. He shook and wailed. You held his shoulders to keep him upright. He coughed black liquid as his eyes flashed brown. The liquid trickled down his chin to mix with the dry blood. His eyes clouded white.
He listed right. You couldn’t steady him as his weight dropped. You cushioned his head as he fell, your mind racing. Could you use the Eradix spell now? Would it kill Eddie, too? Did you want to gamble with his life? Was the nexus open enough for any spell to get through or not? Would he hate you if you couldn’t do anything?
The whites of his eyes went red — like blood, like lightning. He flailed. The black liquid from his chin smeared your inner forearm. Blistering heat sizzled up your nerves. You pulled away with a curse and a quick draw of breath. Your skin puckered. You needed to get it off you.
The few fallen leaves crumbled in your grasp. You picked at your shirt. If the liquid burned your skin, it would probably burn through clothing. Then you’d be in the same predicament, but this time on your stomach. The only solution was scraping it off.
Leaning over, you bit your lip and dragged your throbbing forearm across the bark of the tree. It abraded the wound like sandpaper. A whine escaped your throat.
Eddie’s yowl eclipsed it. He thrashed to the side. The gray veins darkened. He retched more black liquid. It sprayed over rotting moss.
The entire forest was rotting. The leaden sky became visible as leaves drooped, black and brown and covered in ash. Even the evergreens umbered.
“Eddie,” you said, touching his sallow cheek. “Eddie, don’t leave me.”
He rolled onto his back, coughing a mix of black and red. It splattered his reviving face. The eyes that stared at you were the Bambi brown you adored. Red bloomed across his clothes in blurry slashes and discs.
“No no no no no…”
A pained, distant roar rang through the woods.
You clambered for the side-seam of your shirt. You could use the fabric to wipe the caustic liquid from his skin. Then you had to stop the bleeding. He couldn’t— Not like this. You wouldn’t let him— Not when you could make it right.
His shaking hand made its way to your face, fingers warm on your cheek.
His voice was thick when he said, “Sweetheart…”
You knew what he was going to say, the jerk.
Tearing an uneven strip from your shirt, you said, “Shut up, no.”
His eyelids fluttered and hand dropped to the ground.
“You gotta take ‘im out then.”
“You’re more important.”
He grinned, eyes half-closed and teeth red with blood.
“You flatter me.”
“Quit distracting me.”
You wiped at his chin first, then his cheeks and neck. There had to be a way to get Vecna and heal Eddie at the same time. His bloodstains grew. Time was running out.
“Far be it from…” He panted. “From me…”
“Oh my God, will you be quiet?!”
“Impossible.”
You laughed despite yourself. A sob bubbled out between breaths. Your tears landed on his top. Ignoring them, you threw the soiled fabric and pressed your palms to the biggest bloodstain on his torso. Thick, fresh blood oozed between your fingers. He winced and tensed. You told him to relax.
He breathed, “Fuckin’ bats…”
That was right, the demobats had done this. The bats that had been yours, but taken over by Vecna. They’d become part of the hivemind — and maybe you had, too, until your death. Vecna had sent them. Even if they were dead, they remained a part of him. The hivemind was a loop—
Which meant you could send back what they’d done.
Like a karma spell. What went around came around. You couldn’t recall a full spell, but you remembered enough to focus your intention.
“Stay still,” you said, settling on your calves. “Thought of something.”
He gestured he wouldn’t go anywhere.
You closed your eyes to visualize the vague, shadowy form of Vecna superimposed on Eddie.
“Three times three; Here’s what you’ve bid.” You imagined every bite and every tear pulling out of Eddie’s body. “Own what you did.” You pushed the wounds into Vecna. “Reap what you sowed; A torment you’re owed.”
Eddie twitched under your hands. He choked around broken syllables. One of his hands wrapped around your wrist.
That same pained, distant roar came again.
You met Eddie’s distressed eyes.
“It’s okay,” he croaked. “Keep—”
You nodded, shutting your eyes, and repeated the chant, putting more force behind it. He wheezed as his hold loosened. You bent over him as if to shelter him, but it was too late for that.
You said the spell again. Your fingertips dug into his flesh.
“C’mon, you fucking shit.” You repeated the spell at double speed. “Get out!”
A terrible roar vibrated the very air, resounding from every direction. The ground shuddered. Ash showered from the tree canopy. Eddie’s hand fell from your wrist.
You shoved his shirt up. Your bloody fingerprints joined the blood-rimed scars littering his stomach. Despite the healing, his chest stayed unnaturally still.
If he was healed, why didn’t his chest move?
“Eddie?” You tapped his cheek and put a finger under his nose to check for breath. “Eddie?”
When he didn’t respond, and you couldn’t feel him exhale, you rose onto your knees. You hadn’t cast spell after spell, cried pitchers of tears, and literally died to lose him like this.
Those CPR lessons from middle school had better pay off, you thought as you got into position.
You layered your hands at the center of his chest, hoping you weren’t making a mistake. You used your weight to compress his chest in a fast rhythm. After a few seconds, you tilted his chin back, sealed your lips over his, and breathed air into his lungs.
Cycling through compressions and breathing, you began silently bargaining. If he lived, you’d give up anything — Djarums, wearing black, spellwork. If he lived, you’d do anything — tell your parents about you being a witch, volunteer at an old-folks home, bless every person you interacted with. Anything. Anything to get him back. Whatever higher power out there told you to do, you’d do it.
You puffed into his lungs once, twice. You begged him to breathe. He convulsed, feet kicking the dead leaves. You cried out in relief before resting your forehead on his shoulder. His head flopped to the side as he coughed and sputtered.
His voice was thready as he said, “Ow.”
You straightened and held his cheek. He didn’t pull away from your touch or stiffen, but something in his body language shifted. Like you made him uncomfortable, and he didn’t want you to know you made him uncomfortable.
“Can you breathe okay?” you asked, withdrawing your hand from his cheek. “Any sharp pain?”
“No, just… just sore.”
You nodded, gnawing on your lip, and rubbed your dirty palms on your thighs.
He asked, “Vecna’s alive, isn’t he?”
You nodded again.
With your left eye still cursed, you had to assume so. You’d failed. Sure, you’d injured him. Maybe that would work in El’s favor. Maybe that would be enough.
You glanced at Eddie. He lay in the dead leaves, scrubs bloody and morgue tag around his toe.
Injuring Vecna wasn’t enough. Leaving it to El wasn’t enough.
“I think I can kill him.”
Eddie strained onto an elbow. You reached for him, then stopped short. You didn’t want to make him uneasy. He closed his eyes as he breathed through obvious discomfort.
He asked, “What do you need?” before opening his eyes.
“Nothing.” You swallowed. “I just need to concentrate.”
In the meantime, ash had ceased falling through the withering trees. Chittering from the demodogs had quieted as well. You took that for a good sign. It was time to hit Vecna while he was down.
However, if using magic made Eddie uncomfortable, you wouldn’t do it in front of him.
“Rest here,” you said and scooted back on your knees.
Your gut twisted and muscles quivered. The back of your neck twinged.
“Where—”
“I’ll be over there.” At random, you pointed to your right. “It won’t take long.”
You stood on flimsy legs. The woods spun and became fuzzy. The ground tilted. You caught yourself on aching, tired arms as you collapsed to the side.
Eddie said, “Don’t—”
“No,” you said. “I can do this.”
You shook yourself alert before attempting to stand again. This time, you rose by degrees. Your knees still wobbled, and your fatigued thighs complained, but you stood. You couldn’t give up. Vecna still lived.
Eddie said your name like a question.
You assured him it would be alright. Then, taking deliberate, deep breaths, you heel-toed it to a tree a few yards away. After rounding the trunk, you slumped. The bark caught on your shirtsleeve and flecked away in brittle pieces.
You sank to your knees, skeptical of your ability to stand again. That doubt hardly deterred you. If Vecna died after this spell, you’d sleep off the exhaustion here.
You leaned your shoulder on the trunk and closed your eyes. Even though you had no idea what Vecna looked like, you knew his energy. You threw a silent prayer out to guide the Eradix spell. No one else should be harmed.
Enough people had suffered because of Vecna.
You bowed your head and fisted your hands. “Radicitus scindo, vlaen forma,” flowed from your lips without thought. Thunder boomed nearby. You repeated the incantation, thinking of an arrow nocked. Again, you repeated it. You loosed the arrow. It blazed through the air, its tip glinting sharp and true.
You wet your lips, tasting steel. Each word of the incantation rocked you forward. Your arrow glided through smoke and lightning, a cage of lies, a temple to misery. Dark secrets yielded like the earth to a shovel.
Clouded eyes widened when the arrow struck.
Vines like veins burst to hemorrhage inky bile. It flooded the blood-soaked land in a torrent of black. The red sky turned gray. Screams, mighty and meek, crashed across realities. Pillars housing relics of despair crumbled.
Countless hands rose from the inhospitable depths to flay burnt, corrupted flesh. They whispered his name; your incantation beneath. He attempted to drive them away, but the dead were relentless. They didn’t know pain or exhaustion. There was no torment he could show them to make them cower.
They pulled at his neck, his scalp, his open mouth. He gurgled and choked on decades of his own creation. Pieces of him disintegrated, leaving swirls of gray in the ichor’s black mirror.
The dead dragged him under at last. Then there was silence, like the brief hush after a long exhale.
His inner world fragmented with a bellow of thunder. The last beat of his desiccated heart. Fragments became slices became scraps became splinters became particles — until there was nothing.
Not even your arrow remained.
Cool droplets landed in your hair, slunk down your forehead. You opened your eyes to a murky woodland. Raindrops trickled over trembling leaves. You blinked before bringing your fingers in front of your left eye. You could see them.
The curse had been lifted. Vecna was dead. Was Max awake? There was no reason to think she wasn’t.
With a grin, you called, “Eddie?” and spread your hands on the damp soil.
Only the peaceful tip-tap of drizzle answered.
“Eddie, are you there?”
Using the trunk for balance, you stood. Your rubbery legs held your weight, but you wouldn’t trust them to run a marathon any time soon. You held onto the trunk and inched around it.
Eddie was gone. The used strip of your shirt lay amongst the leaves as evidence he’d been there.
You left the safety of the tree, heading to where you’d left him. You examined the ground to determine where he’d gone, because you couldn’t linger while a storm gathered. Trampled leaves offered some direction. You followed the trail, yet the surrounding woods remained unfamiliar. Of course, you reasoned, you hadn’t exactly been surveying the land as you ran from him.
Step by aching step, minute after barren minute, your heartbeat sped. Your chest constricted. He wouldn’t abandon you. Your shirt dampened with chilly rain and new sweat. He wasn’t callous. The trees all looked alike. You assured yourself you weren’t walking in circles.
Ahead, leaves crunched in uneven strikes. Like tottering footsteps. You opened your mouth to call for Eddie, but you stopped short. That could be anyone. You huddled behind the nearest tree. They could be a soldier or a lone vigilante or an injured demo-creature.
Lord, you hoped it wasn’t a demo-creature.
You put a hand over your mouth and nose to muffle your breathing. Footsteps shuffled past. You stole a quick look, recognizing the dark hair and green scrubs. You slumped and caught yourself before you fell.
“Eddie?”
He spun to face you and winced.
“Hey, I—” He bounced on one foot. “Goddammit…”
He bent and did something at ground-level the leaves obscured. You stood and eased from your hiding spot. He staggered before crowing. He sounded like his old self, which made you smile.
He straightened, holding the morgue tag aloft.
“Fucking thing’s annoying.”
“I bet.” You wiped water from your forehead with the back of your hand. “Where’d you go?”
“Found us a ride.”
“My car’s parked at the hospital.”
“We’ll get it later.” He approached you, tucking the tag in the shirt’s breast-pocket, and held out his hand. “C’mon, our chariot awaits.”
You dried your palms on the sides of your jeans.
“Are you sure?”
He frowned, his hand dropping to the side.
“Sure about what?”
“That you want me touching you.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Before… After I…” You sighed and shook your head, too tired to explain. “Nevermind.”
“Hey,” he said, drawing near to cup your cheek with a trembling hand. “We’re—uh… We’re good, alright? I’m… good.”
You put your hand over his and leaned into his touch.
“Me too.” You gave him a wry look. “Under the circumstances.”
He grinned.
“Yeah, your eyes are the same color now.”
You returned the grin.
“Yeah, you’re breathing.”
His grin widened.
“What a pair we make.”
He extracted his hand and offered it for you to take. You curled your hand around his palm. His fingers tightened. That certain touch was enough to keep you going, though neither of you could walk at a brisk pace.
“Sorry if I freaked you out by disappearing back there,” he said as he picked his way through the underbrush. “I wasn’t leaving-leaving, but I knew it was safe. I… I knew you were safe.”
You squeezed his hand in affection before offering your socks to protect his feet. He refused, albeit kindly, explaining he didn’t want to stick around long enough to put them on.
“Are there demo-whatevers out there?” you asked.
“Dead ones.”
“Holy shit.”
“It’s a goddamn mess, but the truck can handle it.”
“Truck?”
“Unlocked. Looked like the owner left in a hurry.”
You didn’t blame them.
He asked, “Where do you want to go?”
With a sigh, you mentally deliberated. Your house was across town. Or at least, you thought it was. His might be closer, but there’d been a gate in its ceiling. No doubt that had turned into the start of a fissure. So that was out. Getting your car from the hospital meant driving close to the nexus — and the heart of the battle.
The underbrush yielded to a carpet of mown grass. Eddie rubbed his feet on it, muttered how much nicer it’d been when he hadn’t felt pain.
The cloudy sky was just a cloudy sky that promised steady rain. The tower of smoke from the nexus had vanished. You’d never experience this level of stillness and quiet. No whoosh of cars, no conversations, no television or radio, no pet noises, no chirping birds. It was like you and Eddie were the last people in Hawkins.
Even so, Eddie hadn’t joked when he said the street was a mess. Demo-creature bodies littered the pavement and yards. Some shaped like canines, others like spindly humanoids, but all their petaled mouths and clawed hands lay limp and bloody.
You whispered, “Holy shit.”
This was what the predators you’d heard months ago looked like. The lamprey-like tooth on your necklace came from them.
The rain started coming faster.
Eddie gave your hand a gentle tug.
“C’mon, let’s go.”
You nodded, letting him lead you across yards, through rusting gates, and around painted sheds. He guided you to the passenger side of a maroon-and-white pickup truck parked in front of a detached garage. The worn interior smelled dusty, but you cracked the window as Eddie slid behind the steering wheel.
He unclipped the steering column and pulled a socket of wires loose. From the bundle, he chose two wires and yanked them from the socket. Using his shirt hem as insulation, he twisted the wires together. The dash lights and radio lit. Static gushed from the speakers. You turned the volume knob until the radio clicked off. He nodded in thanks and pulled another wire loose to graze it with the twisted wires.
Sparks blinked across the exposed metal.
The engine rumbled to life. You hooted in delight and drummed on the dashboard. Eddie beamed at you, revving the engine.
He gave the locked steering wheel a good heave. Metal pinged from inside the steering column. He turned on the windshield wipers and shifted the truck into Reverse.
“Where to, my lady?”
“Well, I’ve been staying at Steve’s, so…”
With a sly look, he asked, “Is there something you wish to tell me?” His eyes widened. “Have I been replaced?”
You chortled.
“It’s not like that.” You poked his upper arm. “I’ll explain on the way there.”
