Carved Marble Group of Two Addorsed Lions by André Beauneveu (circa 1335–1402), dating from 1364–66.

Originally executed to form part of the tomb of King Charles V of France at the Abbey of St. Denis, they were brought from France in 1802 by the English aristocrat Sir Thomas Neave (1761–1848), and have remained in the same collection ever since. Known to scholars only from an engraving of the 18th century, the emergence of these lions represents a remarkable re-discovery. Celebrating the art of medieval Europe, while simultaneously representing technical brilliance.

Designing Crochet Mandalas are really tough, I won’t deny it. To get the stitch counts right so the project lays flat is nearly a miracle or just a fluke. There is a science to it and once a designer has the tricks up their sleeve, it’s amazing what can be accomplished.

We asked crocheters on the The Crochet Crowd Stitch Social Group to recommend designers that they have physically done a pattern from.

I did look at the pricing for the patterns. Completely reasonable. I am not kidding when I say how tough mandalas are to design. They are worth the investment of purchasing a pattern.

Local Victim Advocate Recognized for Reducing Rape Kit Backlog

When she was 13 years old, in 1985, Masters was raped at gunpoint by a stranger who broke into her Dallas home. Physical evidence was collected but never tested. Nearly two decades later, in 2004, Congress passed the Debbie Smith Act, making funding available to address the backlog of sexual assault kits nationwide. The following year, the Dallas Police Department established a cold case program, and Masters’ case was among those reopened. Police found a DNA match to a man serving time in prison for other sexual assault convictions, but the statute of limitations had run for Masters’ rape, so her case could not be prosecuted.

Masters spent the next 14 years advocating for reform in Texas, which, as of 2017, was still sitting on a backlog of 18,000 untested rape kits. She joined forces with Democratic state Representative Victoria Neave, and together they helped pass the Lavinia Masters Act of 2019, which prohibits the premature destruction of rape kits and delays statutes of limitations for crimes of sexual assault until rape kits are tested.

Her focus now is on reaching out to rural Texas towns that aren’t familiar with the new statute.

“I want to make sure even the smallest towns or the smallest cities are taking care of business,” she says. “I had an incident where I was doing a talk on a totally different event in Denton County, and one of the crime scene officers was talking and he mentioned that some rape kits from the ’70s were on the shelf. And I asked him, ‘Why are those kits still there?’ And he said, ‘We don’t have the money, and it probably doesn’t matter.’ And I said, ‘No sir, every victim matters. That could be evidence of a serial rapist who was running around in our state or another state. Or he may have even done an offense such as murder, and we don’t have that evidence processed. There is funding available. I want to make sure everybody’s on the same page.

Drugs made from the urine of pregnant mares generate more than $1 billion in sales for Pfizer every year.

Due to its high oestrogen concentration, it is a key ingredient in many Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) drugs.

Premarin (PREgnant MARes' URIne) is the commercial name for the HRT medication manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals which is owned by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.

For 6 months of their 11 - month pregnancies, the horses are confined 24/7 to stalls so small that they cannot turn around or take more than one step in any direction.

Around the world, hundreds of thousands of pregnant mares are kept on pregnant mare urine (PMU) farms. Here they must wear rubber urine-collection bags at all times, causing chafing and lesions. They are denied free access to water to increase oestrogen concentration.

Once the foals are born, they are taken away from their mothers – often forcibly. They are typically sold at auction by farmers where most are purchased by slaughterhouses.

Mares are then re-impregnated. This cycle continues for about 12 years until they are unable to become pregnant and are sent to slaughter.

Pfizer has PMU farms in the U.S. and Canada, as well as in China and India. They have purchased conjugated equine oestrogens in bulk from China and India since the 1980s. There are currently no nationwide laws in China that explicitly prohibit the mistreatment of animals.

If you’ve been prescribed HRT drugs like Prempak-C, Prempro, Premique, Premarin or the combined menopausal - osteoporosis drug Duavee, you have been prescribed a synthetic form of HRT that contains conjugated horse oestrogens.

Plant - based and synthetic HRTs carry comparable benefits and risks.

Bio-identical hormones (BHRT) differ from conventional hormone replacement therapy, which by definition uses animal or synthetic hormones whose structures differ from those produced in the human body.

BHRT hormones are used as an alternative to HRT. They are compounds that have exactly the same chemical and molecular structure as hormones that are produced in the human body.

They are mostly derived from soya and yams which are chemically altered to become a therapeutic agent for humans and are thus cruelty free.

Transdermal gels and patches are suitable for vegans as well as pellets and implants. The vast majority of HRT tablets are not suitable for vegans as they tend to contain lactose and/or gelatine.

Some examples of alternative drugs include Estrace, Estratab, Climara, Cenestin, and Ortho-Est.

An Average Guide to Having Fun with Paint (Metallic Gold)

Hello again, CellPhish returned with another painting guide for you all. This is less formal, more just showing some tricks I do when I paint to create shortcuts or just for fun color/effect combos.

Today’s fun guide is going over some of my approach to metallic paint, specifically gold.

As always, we’ll need models. I collect a Stormcast Eternals army (Warhammer: Age of Sigmar; Games Workshop) so gold tends to be a major component of their signature appearance. Perfect for this little quick tutorial

To begin with, I’ll start with 2 different primer/base coats. The model on the left is a kitbash I made to fit with the theme of my personal collection while the model on the right is Neave Blacktalon; a named character that is part of the Stormcast Eternals model line (her armor will be painted to match her own stormhost).

Now the next step is to cover them in a shade wash to get the shadows on their armor. Most like to use a light reddish brown (Reikland Fleshshade from Citadel, as an example) or a brown but I was inspired by a fellow hobbyist’s approach to gold, which he got from a tutorial he had seen. If I find the tutorial, I’ll be sure to link it.

My chief take-away was how different colors can change the gold’s appearance... which leads to experiments like this!

Neave is covered in a green shade (Biel-Tan Green) and my caster is covered in a purple shade (Druchii Violet). They look pretty weird, especially Neave. Got to let these dry so went off to watch Netflix or something for about 30 min.

Once the shade wash is dry, time to break out the dry brush!

I go pretty heavy handed when drybrushing at this stage, as I want to cover up most of the shade coloring. I only want the shading to be in the recesses and where shadows make sense on the model

Neave (on the left) is given a liberal drybrushing of Ghenna’s Gold (Citadel) to bring her armor back up to that yellow gold and blend the green into the recesses. My Caster (on the right) is liberally drybrushed with Sigmarite (Citadel), blending the violet  down.

Almost there. Quick and easy job.

Final step is one last drybrushed layer, this one more concentrated on just the highlights using a silver paint (Necron Compound, Citadel). Using my work light as a source, I brush the silver where the light is brightest on parts of the model. It looks the most natural when on the table that way.

And huzzah, done... but what was the point of showing you guys this?

Mostly, it’s fun. I find experimenting with techniques and colors can teach you a lot about painting, even if they don’t work out afterwards. After all, how will you know if you don’t try?

A better angle on Neave Blacktalon... but why choose a brass base coat and use a green wash to make her armor gold?

I wanted her armor to look like it had been worn, seen years of combat. Green is a common color you’ll find in the patina on aged and worn metals. I’m also not heavily fond of ‘bright’ golds. I find it an obnoxious color in abundance and since her armor is predominantly gold, I wanted it muted. Once fully painted, it will all come together.

And this one?

My bone-head caster here is actually NOT all gold. The armor will be a dark purple and the robes yellow. The gold, in this case, serves as a trim. The use of the purple color was to tone down the intensity of the bright gold base coat as well as get all the more subtle shadowing and highlighting out of the way before doing the color.

SO i wanted to make some kind of a.....semi coherent post about em new babis that i have bc i want to talk about them but i wont be able to make too much content about them (or as much as im doing w aura now lol) for a while at least but yeah. i want to ramble about them anyway because they good. and im a proud mama. all of them were initially born into pinterest boards so you kinda get the most out of them from their boards i think. visually anyway. OKE so meet eir, asher, isa and neave.

eir is my dark-skinned and pale eyed elfy archer queen. her name means peace and mercy and thats mostly what her personality is about lol. shes quite lawful and wants to do the right thing, preferably with no violence. she is skilled with her bow but wants to use it as the absolute last option when negotiating or making decisions. she’s very calm and collected and can be quite serious, but she has a kind heart. her mother was an elf and her father a human, which kind of drives her motivation to learn about humans and maybe how to make peace with them. i just made her in dao, as a dalish warden (so her backstory kind of conflicts with the lore but who cares about canon right haha *sweats*) and im v excited to see what kind of journeys shes gonna have (and who is she gonna romance YEET).

asher is the sweetest boi. the sunshine. with his red hair and freckles. so many freckles... he’s a rogue as well and really, really, loves his blades. he doesnt really have a filter, he says all the things that hes thinking about and that def has got him into trouble. hes short, pretty and a meme and just wants to climb trees and have a good time. and maybe go stick a knife in some bad guys throat from time to time. he has a younger sister (but who really knows which one is supposed to be the older one). im planning on making him as my hawke in da2 and thatll certainly change some things (like...add another sibling lol good luck @ me trying to figure that out) but till then! hes my chaotic boi. his name also means happy so there ya go.

isa is a buff stronk qunari warrior lady, very intimidating looking, extremely scarred all over, broken nose, all that stuff. but in reality she is the softest and gentlest bean, cries a lot, and spends most of her free time taking care of lil forest creatures. she was trained to be a warrior from a very young age, never wanted to be one but kind of had to and didnt know how to live life any different. that has left her with a lot of emotional burden and insecurity and that combined with she already being very sensitive is.....A Lot. but we love her v much. i made her in dai and eeep cant wait to play with her and see her grow and develop more. her name does mean strong willed so *eyes emoji*.

neave is a mystery for both me and them probably. neaves a demon babey, not really of any gender or race, not really alive but still existing in some way. they werent always like that tho, but shenanigans happened (im....figuring it out alright), they died and came back blind and having all the color taken away from their skin, hair and face. and seeing that sacrifice was really for nothing, why even believe in good anymore huh? they give that creepy kind of vibe just being very calm, cunning, emotionless. doing terrible things and not blinking an eye. but they dont do those things just for the sake of doing them, neaves very intelligent and always have their reasons, whatever those might be. neaves a blood mage (an evil blood mage? really stretching the stereotypes here huh) but not part of any game as of now, and prob not going to be in a while at least. so they chillin here and there for now.

A collaborative display by the V&A+RIBA Architecture Partnership. Drawn from the RIBA Collections and V&A archive, this display presents six UK social housing projects from the last 100 years, each with an experimental approach in addressing the provision of a home for all.

The challenge of providing housing for all is one that has faced governments and architects for over a century. This display presents six innovative projects from the collections of the RIBA and the Victoria and Albert Museum, each demonstrating a unique experiment in social housing design. A Home for All will place the current thinking around housing in a historical context; focusing on instances of innovation will emphasise and encourage further experimentation.

Five historic schemes and one contemporary example showcase the way architects and local councils have experimented with design and process in response to the need for mass housing, experimenting with parameters of public participation, of form and design, and of successive visions of contemporary societal and domestic life. The display includes works from the RIBA collections by Neave Brown, Mary Duggan Architects, Ralph Erskine Arkitektkontor, Denys Lasdun, Tecton and the architectural departments within various local government bodies.
