#The Homosexual Dream

I don’t know if we’ll ever see the mental health gap between straight people and gay people close, at least not fully. There will always be more straight kids than gay kids, we will always be isolated among them, and we will always, on some level, grow up alone in our families and our schools and our towns. But perhaps that’s not all bad. Our distance from the mainstream may be the source of some of what ails us, but it is also the source of our wit, our resilience, our empathy, our superior talents for dressing and dancing and karaoke. We have to recognize that as we fight for better laws and better environments—and as we figure out how to be better to each other. I keep thinking of something Paul, the software developer, told me: “For gay people, we’ve always told ourselves that when the AIDS epidemic was over we’d be fine. Then it was, when we can get married we’ll be fine. Now it’s, when the bullying stops we’ll be fine. We keep waiting for the moment when we feel like we’re not different from other people. But the fact is, we are different. It’s about time we accept that and work with it.”

I still often think about this passage—how there will always be less gay people than straight people, and that most of us homosexuals will grow up alone until we’re old enough to go out and meet others like us. It’s always left a bittersweet taste in my mouth, but I have to accept that we will always be different, and that’s okay.

eric bogosian seems like the kind of guy that experimented with gay sex back in the day and regrettably unfortunately found himself to be heterosexual and it was one of the biggest disappointments of his life but now he's been given the opportunity to live out his gay dream in a way and he is clearly so stoked to be playing a homo character on the gay vampire show and whenever he does a press junket with jacob assad and sam he's giving vibes of proud pflag dad with his three rainbow kids..actually maybe not kids because one of them is desperate to lick the back of his throat, and with the other two he is clearly convinced they are in love with each other, something which he has tried to allude to in, and this is not a joke or exaggeration, the majority of the group interviews he has participated in

I saw the film adaptation of E. M. Forster’s Maurice by Merchant Ivory many years ago when I was still a teenager (perhaps over a decade ago; I finally read the novel only within the past few months), and through all these years, I still recall how resilient the ending remains, as portrayed in this song of the official soundtrack. Those two chords in the second part somehow bring about a closure to all the conflicting feelings Maurice experienced in his life… he finally met another gay man whom he loved & loved him back—the most significant thing to happen in a gay man’s life, especially during this time in Edwardian England. 

Most homosexual-themed media is severely depressing, because more often than not the gay main character dies or is killed, but Maurice was intentionally different, because the main character was able to experience love & physical consummation, despite living in an extremely prude & homophobic place & period. What’s more important for me, however, is that Maurice (the novel) was initially written in pre-WWI England (specifically 1913–14), meaning that it is NOT a period piece that was set in that time—it is an EXACT PRODUCT of that time—further meaning, homosexuality was alive & well beneath the heavy morality-filters Edwardian England held on history. 

E. M. Forster was never able to publish Maurice until after his death (in 1970). When I hear this piece again & again, I mentally hear Alec tell Maurice, “Now we shan’t never be parted” repeatedly, as a testament to homosexual male love in an era that was not kind to homosexual men.

I love that even with all the lengths Stronghart went through to hide Kazuma's identity (using a mask to hide his eyes and a cloak to cover everything else, banning him from even speaking), the minute Ryunosuke saw him for the first time he suspected it. From his posture alone, they knew each other for about a year and were separated for like eight months and Ryunosuke could still identify his bbf from the way he stood like... Kazuma lost his memory, his identity, his... everything and Ryunosuke still clocked it, even though he literally thinks Kazuma is dead, that the prosecutor's masked apprentice is the whole reason he's even there at all.

Literally what else could Stronghart have done to hide Kazuma's presence from Ryunosuke, he did as much as he could but still Ryunosuke felt it immediately. This feels gayer than most of the yaoi I've come across, this is a major plot point in a romantic drama, this can't not be a trope in one of the kdramas my dad likes to watch on Netflix.
