Is Book VI: The Russian Monk the true message and correct position in the entire book? Well. Not exactly. Zosima is Dostoeyvsky's "ideal man" in the same way Jesus was his idea of an ideal man. Does this ideal man stay standing in the whole of the narrative? Not even Dostoevsky knew that! I'm citing a citation in Bakhtin's book here, but while he intended The Russian Monk to be the answer to The Grand Inquisitor, he wasn't sure whether it would be "enough". The author himself didn't know if he would be able to dethrone the idea he had let out into the text.

Whatever the hell Bill and Ford have going on in the books is so funny to me because, like, we have Journal 3 where Ford spends some time one-sidedly pinning over that asshole and the Book of Bill has Bill one-sidedly moping over Ford AND IN ANY OTHER, NORMAL SITUATION that would make this weird clusterfuck of a relationship mutual but somehow it still always stays one sided, if you get what I mean
