Saturday Morning Vid Recs - Women!
Back in January I told @poetikat that I wanted to share just a fraction of vids I’ve seen since I started vidding in 2007 that I love. Taken me forever to format the links into a post to share. I have several more posts half-finished and may show up on your dashboard in following weeks or months.
I'm reccing vids that are at least 1 year old, but most of these vids are 4 and 8 and 12 years old and sometimes older. These vids feature a variety of sources, characters, genres of music, genres of shows. Each of these vidders have their own style and the way they approach a song or a source. I love these vids, they're fun to watch, they're hot, mesmerizing, engaging, thoughtful, full of love and horniness and BAMFs and joy and struggle. I love. I love.
I give to you 23 vids for this weekend's theme:
Women!!
Learning to Fly by rhoboat. Beautiful Boxer (2004). A movie vid based on trans Thai boxer Nong Toom’s life. This song is so good showing her journey to learning to find herself and fly! Ako Te Reo by bironic. Rūrangi (2020). Ana learning Te Reo Māori. This vid is so wonderful! It's never too late to learn. Come on Feet by JinkyO. Pumzi (2009). The song choice and pacing is incredible for this Kenyan sci-fi film. Something has to keep us moving forward. Black Nails by fightingarrival. A League of their Own (2022). A Max vid that is a great look at her journey on the show. This vid makes me want to rewatch all her scenes all over again. Here, take this L. Damned if She Do by chaila. Borgen. This source is the Danish political drama Borgen. Birgette is so kick-ass and this song is perfect for her. She come alive when she dying. "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." Strict Machine by such_heights. Doctor Who. River Song. I’m in love with River Song so of course I have to rec this. I get high on a buzz then a rush when I'm plugged in you. Counting Stars by beccatoria. DC Animated Wonder Woman. Beccatoria has always done such a great job of vidding animated source and WOMEN!!!! Superstar by @heresluck. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A Faith vid. This (one of many) epic Faith vids to come out of vidding fandom over the years. This vid lives rent free in my head. But I would pay this vid to live in my head because I love it so much. Never gonna be the same again.
Down & Dirty by @sweeter-than. Killjoys. A Dutch fanvid! A++ song choice for a character study showing her relationship with the Jacobi brothers and her general awesomeness. Make way. Cut Like a Buffalo by kiki_miserychic. Empire. Cookie Lyon fanvid! Cookie has all the skin in the game and she is so good at music, but damn there’s so much bullshit she has to deal with along the way. Yeah, you know I look like a woman but I / Cut like a buffalo / Stand up like a tower, tall / Then I fall just like a domino. Control: A Monstress Fanvid by garrideb. Based on the comic Monstress. You know this Halsey song + any woman who has been Going Through It is going to be a fucking ride. Great editing, amazing art. Fortunate One by @moocowmoocow The Expanse. CAMINA!!! DRUMMER!!!! A Sleater-Kinney cover of Fortunate Son is 10 million kinds of brilliance here for Camina and this source. I ain't no fortunate one. Celebrity Skin by @some-stars. Black Sails. This is an Eleanor and Max character vid. I repeat: Elenor and Max vid to Courtney Love’s music. Heed the warnings. This vid is so goddamn good. It better be worth it. Double Woman by starlady. Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame. So much awesomeness packed into this vid. Through the camera lens re-editing history gives imagination to the people. Wu Zetian and Shangguang Jing'er are awesome. Hooray for awesome ladies of the Tang Dynasty! Titanium by giandujakiss. Wonder Woman (the original tv show). She is titanium! Suffering Sappho.
Mirrors by @kuwdora. Snow White and the Huntsman. Queen/Snow. Lots of fantasy imagery and bdsm like themes since the Queen wants to suck the youth from Snow. Sex. Love. Control. Vanity. Lightning Field by bradcpu, a Legend of the Seeker fanvid of Cara/Kahlan. The imagery in this vid is outstanding, the tone the atmosphere. I have rewatched this more times than I can count. Strike me down, Give it everything you've got. Hands Away by chaila and beccatoria. Sarah Connor Chronicles/Fringe. Sarah/Olivia constructed reality fanvid that is constructed really really fucking well that you might forget that these are two different shows. I can't reach you. (Or, two messiahs walk into an alternate reality) Hurricane by @laurashapiro. Farscape and Battlestar Galactica, Starbuck/Aeryn.This vid is so epic and hot and incredible...Hot and sexy and can’t take your eyes off them. Two pilots walk into a bar. I Wanna Go by millylicious, a multi-source action vid Angelia Jolie tribute. This is fun and delightful. Space Girl by charmax. Multi-source space women and girls! My momma told me I should never watch Sci-fi but I did, I did, I did. Celebration by sweetestrain. Pop divas. Madonna, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, etc. Another one of my favorites of favorites. The connected imagery between all of these music videos still blows my mind, but goes to show you how pop music continues to build and evolve from each other. Plus sexy dancing. If it makes you feel good. Your Song by anoel. Multi-fandom. One of the most epic sapphic/wlw vids out there. I don’t wanna hear sad songs anymore, I only wanna hear love songs.
Hope you like these recs! Follow the tags to keep up #saturday morning vid recs and/or #kuwdora recs

Hi, i'm a newish bl drama watcher from thailand that just started watching thai bls. i'm a bit ashamed to say that for a long time as a gay man living here i've been avoiding bl shows like the plague cuz of both the fandom reputation and of misconception from my yaoi era which i leave far behind. i'm just want to ask how did you got into watching thai bls and what were you preconception before you got into it.
Welcome to the Tumblr side of BL fandom. I'd actually like to also hear more of your experience with yaoi and BL as a gay person growing up in Thailand if you're willing to share.
For me, I'm a Black American from the Gulf Coast (the South). I grew up in a Catholic city and spent my entire adolescence in the closet. Despite having a sense of who I was as early as 8 years old, I kept most of that to myself. Because I didn't talk about it much with people, I found out most information about queer media and queerness from the internet.
Tumblr media
I entered BL via queer cinema. I think the first explicitly gay character that I remember from TV was Marco from Degrassi: The Next Generation. There were probably others, and definitely more subtle expressions, but when I think about the oldest gay character I remember and connect to, it's Marco. I don't like counting things like shipping Shawn and Corey on Boy Meets World or Tai and Matt on Digimon for oldest gay characters. Sailor Moon can't even count because we got a censored version of it in America.
Tumblr media
I got access to satellite television away from observing eyes around age 16 and started watching content on Logo back when they aired gay content regularly. I watched basically whatever I could late at night. It's how I saw movies like Get Real (1998), Beautiful Thing (1996), and Bent (1997). It's also how I saw Queer as Folk (2000-2005) Noah's Arc (2005-06).
Tumblr media
After hitting adulthood I mostly got lost in video games and standard American TV for a while, but I did basically show up to any Gay Event in TV. I appreciate that Stef and Lena from The Fosters (2013-2018) were some of the only TV lesbians to survive the horror of 2016.
Tumblr media
I watched a bunch of movies in this time, many of which appear on the Queer Cinema Syllabus I made for a hypothetical Westerner new to BL and queer cinema, which @wen-kexing-apologist has decided to try to complete.
Tumblr media
I got into Thai BL in 2018 accidentally. I started seeing gifsets of Kongpob telling Arthit he'll make him his wife passing around Tumblr and was basically like, "Right, what's all this then?"
Tumblr media
I had watched a few Thai gay films, mostly notably Love of Siam (2007), Bangkok Love Story (2007), How to Win at Checkers Every Time (2015), and The Blue Hour (2015), but this was the first time I was seeing a long series made available so easily from any Asian country.
Tumblr media
From there I got into Make It Right (2016-17) and Love Sick the series (2014). Once I realized that yaoi had moved beyond manga and a few anime adaptations, I went looking for a lot more. I basically haven't left since I started in about 2016 with SOTUS.
There's my basic entry into the genre. I don't think I was as worried about fandom and worries at the time because so much of being a fan of queer cinema was a mostly-private experience for me for so long. I didn't realize that BL fans active in the space would predominantly be women or queers figuring themselves out. It took a while to adjust to that, and also to adjust my expectations of the kinds of queer stories BL distributors were willing to fund.
Tumblr media
That being said, I tend to agree with @absolutebl that BL has a useful role in normalization for non-queer audiences who encounter it. I like cheering BL when it does things I think work really well, and also deriding it when I think it does things that are offensive to help nudge the genre and offer my perspective as a gay man.
Tumblr media
I like the place we're at right now where there's way too much to watch for any person with other hobbies and responsibilities because it means that people can pick and choose what's to their tastes.
Tumblr media
More often than not, I'm probably most-invested in something airing from Japan because of my melancholy nature, but there's so much variety these days that it's okay if you don't like everything. I certainly don't!
I'm glad you joined us on Tumblr and look forward to your thoughts!

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞
↳ warnings: none
↳ notes: forgot how good this movie series was. going to be thinking about it quite a bit these few coming days. especially egon! favorite character by far, with winston in next place
↳ song: main title theme (ghostbusters)—elmer bernstein
masterlist | commisions | carrd
• When a flyer for a job downtown mysteriously appeared in your mailbox slot, your first thought was to throw it away
• It looked scrappy. Par on course with the rest of the junk mail companies normally delt out to catch your eye
• Still. Three days later you were standing outside a mildly reevaluated looking firehouse with the paper clutched loosely in your hand, and your best clothes on
• As you’d walked towards the doors, a man came up from behind you, uttering an apology as he nearly bumped into you
• “Hey,” He had paused, allowing you to catch a glance of his tan suit and kinky black hair. “You here for an interview, too?” He asked, walking through the large off-green door as you held it open for him
• “Sure am.”
• “Well, may the best one win. Or get the job, I suppose.” He chuckled with a lopsided grin
• "I dont think they’ll mind hiring the both of us." You eventually responded, looking up at the way the ceiling sagged with old age
• Following your line of sight, the man beside you nodded deeply, and the both of you made your way up to a reception desk with a very annoyed looking lady behind it
• That was the day both you, and who you later learned to be Winston, got the job as the newest pair of Ghostbusters
• “Meet back here tomorrow at noon.” The snappy lady with glasses had said monotonly as she thrust a set of papers at you. You were still looking in the direction that two yelping men in jumpsuits had just gone holding a machine, that it took you a second to notice
• “With the way this job is looking? No way I’m missing tomorrow.”
• Meeting your employers slash coworkers for the first time— technically second if you counted the way two of them crashed your interview mid hiring —was certainly an experience
• Only one had been prepared for both you and Winston’s first days with a handshake and slightly unbuttoned lab coat
• He had introduced himself as doctor Egon Spengler, and shook your hand with a certain rigidness to it. Still, you caught him looking at the both of you with curiosity, so you tossed him an easy upward twitch of you lips. He seemed to relax a little after that
• The other two, however, had proved to be more difficult upon meeting
• Ray Stanz and Peter Venkman were certainly a pair, with the latter sure to be the cause of later headaches, but seemed friendly anyways—if the way they slapped you on the back said anything
• “Welcome to the nerd squad.” Peter has smiled teasingly at you, immediately wrapping an arm around your shoulders and bringing you close as if he was about to tell you a secret. “Stick with me, and you’ll be kicking it with the cool kids!”
• “Is he always like this?” You asked while pushing him away
• “Regrettably.” Egon responded in a flat tone as he moved back to statistics on a chart. “Try being roommates with him in college for six years.”
• “No thanks. I think I’d rather get possessed by one of those ghosts you guys hunt.”
• “Hey, still here!”
• You fell right into place with them pretty quickly after that. Something about getting slimed by a poltergeist in Central Park really brings a group of people together. Especially if they happen to get a really good meal of Thai right after
• In the days weeks and months following your hiring, you get to learn a lot about the little team you’d been squished into
• Winston was probably the first one you befriended. Maybe because the both of you had showed up around the same time, but you found him one of the easiest to just sit down and talk to after a mission without being interrupted every two sentences. The other guys were great, but he seemed to appreciate a little peace and quiet more than what you got in the headquarters
• “Seriously— do we have to call it the headquarters?” You interrupted Peter in the middle of his rant. Sipping on a cup of coffee, you took a moment before speaking more. It really was too early for this. “I mean, come on. It makes us sound like bizzaro superhero’s. More than we already do, anyway.”
• “Personally I wouldn’t mind playing a little Bruce Wayne every now and then.” Peter grinned back suggestively. From beside you, Ego let out his equivalent of an annoyed sigh as he tinkered with stray machinery. Apparently someone else felt it was too early for Peters antics, too
• “Gag me with a spoon.” You deadpanned while swirling your mug around moodily
• “Fine fine. We can call it home base. Happy, sunshine?”
• You grumbled at his sickeningly sweet tone before delving back into your coffee, missing the way Ray and Winston shared slight smiles at the exchange
• “Now that you four are done, mind helping me with our actual jobs?”
• “Oops. Yeah. Sorry Egon.”
• “Sigh.”

Get to know your moots.
Thanks for the tag @almostempty and @probablyreadinsmut 💗
what's the origin of your blog title?: “When it comes to love I don’t choose sides” y'all know where it comes from, right? Oberyn 💗 it represents me well heheh
favorite fandoms: PPCU and I used to be a huge GOT fan.
OTP(s) + shipname: Braime, Jaime Lannister + Brienne of Tarth (don't talk to me about that shitty ending, it still haunts me in my sleep)
favorite color: black. But also red, white and pink.
favorite game: I don't play videogames since I was a child but I used to love Tetris and Pac-Man lol
song stuck in your head: currently Messy - Lola Young and another couple of songs I'm using for a ff I'm writing so no spoilers heheheh
weirdest habit/trait?: I have a closet full of clothes but I often tend to wear the same ones in rotation (I obviously wash them regularly 😂) out of convenience and habit, especially if I have to go to work. I only make an effort if I have dinners/birthdays/special occasions and things like that lol
And I regularly think that people hate me, so if I don't write to you often it's because I'm afraid of bothering you, not because I don't want to know you 🥲
hobbies: writing, reading, watching show/movies, I used to have a bullet journal and I used to practice hand lettering (can't keep up with it anymore but I still love it)
if you work, what's your profession?: I am the secretary in a medical office. I also have another job related to customer satisfaction.
if you could have any job you wish what would it be?: I'd love to be a writer (lol not skilled or even talented enough but hey, what do you expect from someone who shares her birthday with Emily Brontë?)
something you're good at: I’m quite good at cooking. I’m Italian, baby, it’s in my genes.
something you're bad at: I’m messy. I can draw like a 5 years old kid lol
something you love: concerts. I’ve been to 100+ concerts in my life and some of my favorite memories and trips are related to concerts I've been to.
something you could talk about for hours off the cuff: I could still rant about Braime and GoT ending for hours. lol Also, concerts memories, I have some good stories 😂
something you hate: Lies. God, just tell me the truth ffs. And the majority of cis men. They just suck, you know.
something you collect: nothing. But I love stationary stuff. I could buy everything, I don't do it because I would waste my savings LMAO
something you forget: If I don't write things down on my phone it's very easy for me to forget them because my memory sucks.
what's your love language?: Cooking for someone, calling people a variety of pet names and/or finding a special one for them, being a great cheerleader, shower them with compliments and love. Just being there when they need help, I am a reliable person.
favorite movie/show: too many, jeeez. How am i supposed to choose? Some movies: When Harry met Sally, Parasite, Almost Famous, Fried Green Tomatoes, Brokeback Mountains, Stand by me, Aftersun, Past Lives, Promising young woman, 10 things I hate about you, Love me if you dare, Rear window, Le conseguenze dell’amore (The consequences of love, it’s an Italian movie by Paolo Sorrentino).
Some shows: Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Friends, Fleabag, Jane the Virgin, My Brilliant Friend, When they see us, Sense8, Peaky Blinders, Mad Men, The Handmaid’s Tale, Grace and Frankie, Bojack Horseman, Normal People.
favorite food: sorry to be such an Italian clichè but pasta and pizza. I could eat them all day everyday lol I also love a good risotto, sushi and Pad Thai.
favorite animal: dogs. I love all of them but especially mine (obviously lol).
are you musical?: I can sing quite decently (I sing in in my car all the time hahahah) but I never studied music and I can’t play any instruments.
what were you like as a child?: I used to be bold and chatty, I always loved reading and writing.
favorite subject at school?: Literature and Art.
least favorite subject?: Math. I’m the worst at it.
what's your best character trait?: loyalty and respect. I never make unsolicited judgments about anyone's body or comment on it, I never ask those shitty questions like "when are you graduating, when are you getting married, why are you still single, when are you having a baby" you know, right? I hate them, I hate them deeply and I think people should mind their own fucking business.
what's your worst character trait?: Lack of self-esteem, laziness, my poor memory. And I don’t give second chances, once you hurt me you’re out of my life permanently and I totally forget about you like you meant nothing for me (I kinda love that about me but I know it can be brutal lol)
if you could change any detail of your day right now what would it be?: I wish I was damn rich and not have to work hahah I would like to be more sporty but I hate doing sports lol I promise I’m going to try to force myself to do something for my well being.
if you could travel in time who would you like to meet?: The first person that comes to my mind is Artemisia Gentileschi, (b: 1593 d: 1656) she was an Italian painter. Read something about her, she’s fucking great ♥️ Also, my grandpa, I loved him so much and he passed away when I was 15. I would love to meet him again.
recommend one of your favorite fanfics (spread the love!):
I love so many so I’m going with last ones that I read and I thought WOW, this is amazing and deserves so much more attention:
Yes ma’am - @sizzlingcloudmentality
Law of attraction series - @baronessvonglitter
Pretty boy - @joelmillerisapunk
Npt: @joelmillerisapunk @milla-frenchy @baronessvonglitter @aurorawritestoescape @thundermartini @schnarfer @sizzlingcloudmentality @cvntclip @evolnoomym @msjarvis @arcanefox207 @gothcsz 💗

I'm so sorry if I'm clogging your inbox but I'm nothing but a hyperactive gal with chronic brain rot
Domestic Kate Laswell?
Domestic Kate Laswell who gets into not-so-quiet arguments with household appliances.
Domestic Kate Laswell who sits at the kitchen table and doomscrolls while her wife makes a recipe she saw on Instagram reels.
Domestic Kate Laswell in ratty lounge clothes with her hair pulled in a tangled ponytail, somehow holding a cat, book, and a bag of Lays.
I saw Kate Laswell and immediately knew what I had to do. Not apologising for this, I like Laswell posting so it's gonna be long. Also, when it comes to Station Chief Kate "I love my wife" Laswell, there is no clogging my inbox.
Kate Laswell, the esteemed woman she is routinely argues with their toaster because it's broken but she refuses to get a new one because it was the first ever appliance she bought herself. She and her wife have the money to purchase hundreds of new toasters but she refuses because this one is her toaster. Sarah Laswell has walked into their kitchen on multiple occasions to find Kate talking to this fucking toaster. "You under-toast the bread and then you over-toast the bread. Just toast my fucking bread correctly." "Let's get a new-" "No."
Kate, who has a Pinterest board full of recipes that she thinks Sarah might like to try and she'll send them to her wife only to find that it's the same recipe from the Instagram reel that Sarah had bookmarked last night. So, now she sits and watches videos about behind-the-scenes facts from movies while Sarah argues with herself about how much garlic is too much garlic.
Kate, who spends her day off on the couch with Minnie, their Maine Coon, on her lap with a book resting on Minnie's back and a bag of chips held between her chest and the cat. She's wearing sweatpants that are so old she can't identify what logo used to be on the leg. Her shirt is definitely Sarah's because there's green paint around the collar and it matches the green in the painting above their mantel.
Kate Laswell, who can routinely be heard threatening to put one of her cats in the soup. What soup, you ask? The soup.
Kate, who very `begrudgingly` agrees to let Sarah buy the cat Halloween costumes. And then days later sends John a series of photos. Minnie, their big, glorious, sophisticated girl, is dressed like a hotdog. Borris, her favourite grumpy old man, has a stupid Dracula cape. Dolly, has on a costume that makes her look like Yoda. And John's favourite of their cats, Dot, the little mold spore has tiny ladybug wings because they were the only thing small enough to fit her. Kate makes a photo of the four cats and Sarah her laptop wallpaper. John makes a photo of Dot in her tiny wings his phone wallpaper.
Kate Laswell, the professional woman who after having spent 26 hours awake sits and scrolls through Facebook one night on Sarah's phone. Except she doesn't actually look at any of the posts, she just sits scrolling with her thumb for ten minutes before she realises what she's been doing. Sarah waits until after she's tucked her wife in to lose it laughing in the other room.
Kate and her wife who parallel play on their phone. They'll sit on the couch with a movie they've seen countless times in the background while Kate plays solitaire and Sarah does her daily word search on her favourite app.
Kate, who does that thing I've noticed literally every woman do when they're on the phone at home and they start doodling in the corner of the nearest bit of paper. It starts as squiggles, then they draw black circles and eventually there are various little flowers scattered across the page.
Kate, who absolutely adores the movie 9 to 5 and will throw it on whenever everything in her job starts to become a bit too suffocating. Sarah recognises the action and immediately orders dinner from their local Thai place. The man who owns it knows the two by name, she doesn't have to order, she just has to call up and she hears "it'll be about half an hour" over the phone. More often than not on those days they'll fall asleep on the couch together like they did at the start of their relationship.
Kate and her wife, who like to make gingerbread cookies at Christmas and decorate them. Sarah is amazing at it when she's not giving the gingerbread ladies gumdrop titties. And then there's Kate, she tries, she genuinely does but every year a photo of her gingerbread folks gets sent to a group chat with her, Sarah, John and Nikolai where they are subsequently body-shamed beyond belief. She saves some for Nik anyway and he accepts them gratefully.
Kate and her beloved blue shirt that she wears to work and owns three of because the first one mysteriously disappeared. Coincidentally, Sarah started baking in the kitchen in nothing but a pale blue shirt and Batman underwear around the same time. Her second has a blood stain on the cuff from where John had grabbed her, not knowing his palm was sliced open and he'd stained the light material with blood. He had felt horrible, Kate brought up the time she'd drunkenly thrown up on a pair of his nice shoes years ago when they were younger and more reckless. They moved on. That shirt is now her "Sarah has roped me into helping paint" shirt. If anyone fucks up her last shirt then she's asking Nikolai, John and Sarah separately all to get her a new one for her birthday so she'll have a decent stock of them.
Sarah, who has to keep a stock of Dr Pepper and Mountain Dew in the fridge because Dr Pepper is her favourite and Mountain Dew is Kate's but the other woman would never admit it or buy it for herself because she's weirdly embarrassed by it. But amongst a very small group of people, it is common knowledge, Station Chief Kate Laswell's favourite drink is Mountain Dew.
And lastly:
Kate Laswell, the woman who once snapped a man's neck with his own gun, is also the woman who loves her wife's family. When they get asked to babysit baby Katie [named after Laswell], the two women agree before the question is even half out of the relative's mouth. In fact, you're right, they should keep baby Katie for the night just to give her parents a night off because they're kind like that. No other reason. And this little girl adores her aunts, if Kate is near then the toddler is by her side clinging to her pant leg.
So, they go shopping and get snacks. They also get baby Katie a new stuffed elephant because she really needed one and who were they to deprive her. Then they go home and change into their respective comfy clothes. Katie's is a little shark onesie and the two women take no less than 19 photos. They spend the day drawing pictures with little Katie, and eventually, it results in the toddler colouring in Sarah's tattoos and drawing Kate some of her own. Eventually, they order some takeout from their local Chinese place and watch Zootopia with their favourite niece. Hours later Sarah takes a photo of big Kate fast asleep on the couch with little Kate asleep on her chest. Kate has an arm around the little girl and the toddler has a fistful of her t-shirt. The next day they very reluctantly take their niece home but not without managing to persuade her parents to let them take her in two weeks time again.

👎🏻 I've been catching up on some KBLs from last year this month and sadly most of them were very disappointing. I put a few on my watchlist that generally had good reviews but yeah let's just say I'm glad I didn't miss anything in the last 2 years lol. The only one I liked was Love Mate, the rest was pretty much pointless. Hopefully the upcoming ones will be better 🤞🏻

forgot to post my thoughts while reading the first chapter of tlkof as someone who has only ever read tda and tid (translated from chaotic portuguese)
thais??? who??
dru likes learning by understanding how things work, relatable (SHE'S LITERALLY ME)
she's learning about downworlders and can ask magnus for help, but specifically cristina (the diva who loved studying faeries!!), mark and helen (icon) and kieran and i love that for her 💞 like yes give her one thing she can take advantage of
SHE'S GOT HER MOTHER ELEANOR'S JACKET !! I REPEAT SHE'S GOT HER MOTHER ELEANOR'S JACKET !!
not her dyeing her hair black (ate)
"thais always looked glamorous in her gear" 🤨 no look i know friends can find each other pretty and beautiful etc but when it's ya literature.....it's usually the censored version of "hot as fuck" JUST SAYING
DRU IS 5'3 YAAA WE'VE GOT THE SAME HEIGHT (i think, i'm not american)
i already love dru and thais's friendship 🫶 they match each others freak
dru trains to forget everything she's gone through 😭
oh already the preppy guys and fuckboys (mason hardcastle)
"dru and thais didn't need to ask each other; they knew already they'd be a team" awwww i already know i'm gonna love their friendship
paige ashdown when i see you in the street (no but like an ableist and fatphobic bully? i'll fight that fucker with my bare hands)
thais speaking portuguese in the middle of nowhere i love it
OH AND THE FUCKBOY IS HER EX AND HE SUCKS, if it was me and i had classes with him i'd literally throw myself off a bridge
dru inventing "sex crocodile",,, she's too iconic i fear
"nothing scared [dru}. nothing in a movie, anyway." babygirl 😭 i remember her like mentioning how she liked horror movies but the horror depicted would never be as bad as the real life horror she's experienced
dru still talks to kit 😭 no like imagine your sister still talks to your situationship of two weeks from three years ago, i'd jump off a bridge (yet again)
"there's no danger. we're on academy grounds" famous last words
"she tugged gently at a dangling lock in her friend's hair" THAT'S LITERALLY A MICROTROPE IN ROMANCE MOVIES
"she cursed silently, imagining every bad word she could think of and some she was pretty sure she'd just made up." let dru say fuck pleaseeee. just once. as a little treat, she deserves it
"she wondered for a moment if she should mention that her brother, mark, was the consort of the unseelie king" not her trying to use her connections
ASH SHOWING UP AND HUMILIATING THE LITTLE FAERIE MEN 😭 he slayed i fear
no yeah he's literally royalty he's literally a prince (get that bag girl!!)
dru thinking that ash's eyes were like the sea glass julian loved......oh how i love this family
"'how do you know my name?' she demanded. his eyes narrowed. 'you must be joking,' he said. 'you've forgotten? you can't have forgotten.'" of course she's forgotten a random guy she was with for two minutes three years ago, she has a life, YOU'RE just a SIMP
ash getting yelled at and reprimanded by his daddy or whatever but still literally helping his crush and sending her away to safety 🙏 and your man can't even text you back
julian and emma leaving london to take care of their child drusilla blackthorn
OH AND JULIAN'S GONNA NEED A LOT A THERAPY AFTER THREE BOOKS OF HIS KIDS GETTING THEMSELVES IN TROUBLE
he didn't even sleep during the three nights she was missing 😭
i fear i might become thais/dru shipper under the right circumstances

How a Bad Date Turned Me into a Serial MILF Hunter
I asked a while ago if I could turn this blog into a personal one. Y’all said it was cool, but I never did anything with it until now.
I met this girl named Jenny. I was in the dorm living room getting a haircut from my barber when Jenny walked in to check on her cookies. She was a cute, small Thai girl with black hair. We asked her what she was doing and after some banter, I asked her how much she was charging for the cookies. She laughed and offered one for free as a token of friendship. Maybe it was the warm cookie, maybe it was the banter but I had a good feeling about her.
I ran into her a couple of days later while walking back to my dorm and noticed she was on my floor. She was as surprised as I was when we discovered that we basically lived across from each other. She said we should hang out sometime, and I told her, "Sure," so she asked for my phone number. We exchanged numbers and then went our separate ways. A few days later, I saw her again. She apologized for being busy but mentioned she was up for hanging out later in the week. That's when I broke the bad news. After I met her I got offered a house and would be moving soon. She was flabbergasted and asked when I would leave. I sheepishly mentioned, “Well, in two days, I will be gone.” To my surprise, she asked for my ADDRESS and said she would come over. I was flattered, gave her the addy and told her I would be busy with moving but afterwards we should be cool. Also note that we weren’t texting in the meantime. We just had each other’s numbers and that was that.
I moved and kinda forgot about her until I went in for another haircut and randomly saw her doing laundry. She later mentioned that she felt terrible seeing me then because she was in her "I’m not seeing anyone" outfit and said she felt ugly. I thought she still looked great and I talked to her. We hadn’t seen each other for a couple of months, and I mentioned it was good to see her and a shame we never really got to hang out. She said she was still up for it since the summer break had started and she had more time. So we set up a date at my place. I would make dinner, and she would bring dessert. I also proposed picking her up in my car, which in hindsight is a crazy ask. Think about it, you're going to a guy’s house, someone you barely talked to. He’s going to pick you up, meaning you have no way of getting home if you want to, and you don’t know where you are to begin with. Crazy. But we were both oblivious so I picked her up in the car, went home and made some Korean food which she liked.
When it came to picking a movie, she mentioned that she loved Disney movies. I was down to watch whatever Disney movie because how bad can a Disney movie be until she mentioned she adored *The Descendants*… If you just went, "I don’t know what that is, and I saw all the Disney movies," I would say the same. The movie is from 2015, featuring some Disney XD actors in a musical. It’s at this point I gotta to mention that she’s 19 and I’m 24. Which doesn’t seem like much, but man… When your favorite movie is from 2015, I feel old AF.
After the movie and food, we just kinda talked about whatever. I also noticed that if I didn’t keep the conversation going, we’d just sit in silence. Like, she would respond to what I was saying and also add her own story, but if I waited for her to start talking, I would keep waiting. It wasn’t too bad since I’m a certified yapper and can just keep going but after some time it did start to bother me.
During dinner, I asked her what she would like to drink, and she saw the two soju bottles I had and picked those. But then she asked if it was okay for me to drink and drive her home… Mind you, I’m 220 lb and 6'3". A single bottle of soju isn’t going to do shit. I need like three back to back before it even starts to tickle my brain. I assured her I would bring her home safely, and we started playing a drinking game. Now, halfway through her bottle, she mentioned that if she took another sip she would probably puke. I don’t know if she was nervous or what, but indeed she had that classic Asian redness in her face and was clearly drunk. Again now she is in some dude's house, with no way of getting home, AND she is shitfaced drunk. On one hand I am happy she felt safe and comfortable enough to act this way around me. On the other hand, that isn’t a smart thing to do. She mentioned later that her phone was blowing up because her friend was keeping tabs on her. I’m glad she has good friends but still.
So we sat on the couch with me stone cold sober and her drunk until she said, “Okay, I want to go home now.” And I was like, “Alrighty then.” We walked to the car (like a 5 min walk), and she went ahead and said, “I am so drunk I probably won’t remember anything after this point.” I didn’t know what to say to that. I put her arm around mine, and she leaned up against me as we walked back. I brought her home safely and hugged her goodbye. At the time, I thought it was a great date. Some dinner, a movie that was kinda slop but the good kind slop, some drinks, and a story to tell. But the more I looked back, the more red flags popped up. I started wondering whether the age gap was too big.
Later I posted a vlog on insta which she complimented. I thanked her and asked if she was up to make a mini vlog together. And so the second date was set. Only not really. I proposed going to the arcade and eat something afterward. But two days before the date, she mentioned she wanted to go to the movies instead. Now, I love movies. I’m a certified Letterboxd user, okay? But man, do I hate movies as a date. You’re sitting in the dark for two hours watching something else. So instead of getting to know each other, you’re watching Timothée Chalamet attempt getting his first Oscar for the billionth time. It’s silly. I don’t like them at all. So I said to her, “Yeah, I would love to go to the movies; let's do it.” I know okay I know. She picked *It Ends with Us*, and not gonna lie, I was just admiring Blake Lively for the better part of two hours. I usually don’t look up movies before seeing them, but I checked the reviews of this movie, and... they were not high. But she picked the movie, and I figured at least she would have a fun time.
Until halfway through the movie, she goes, “This movie is boring.” *Insert internal screaming.* So I told her I agreed and that we could just dip and get some food. But then they started fist fighting in the movie, and she said, “Nah, it's good.” So I sat through the movie (wasn’t that bad tbh), but I wasn’t invested at all. I asked her how many times she had been to the movies. She then mentioned she hadn’t been since she moved from Thailand… WHICH BEGS THE QUESTION, WHY ARE WE IN THE MOVIES RIGHT NOW??? I thought she must love going to the movies or watching them, but now I am two mid movies in for no reason.
Afterwards we walked to the mall to get food, but when we got there, I asked, “So, what are you feeling?” and she goes, “Oh, I’m not hungry, I had some popcorn remember.” She was referring to the popcorn I bought, of which she ate maybe 10% before we threw it in the trash. So now we are seated in this mall with just me being hungry because we basically skipped dinner to watch the movie right after work. And she says she’s not hungry... so I got some Chinese sharing platter, but she only took one or two snacks, and the rest was for me. Sadly it was too much even for my big ass and we left.
She mentioned we could walk home in the cool summer evening. So we talked some more but since dinner the same thing happened as last time. I was talking and asking her questions, but she never really asked me anything in return besides the “and you?” pingpongs. So at some point, I thought, “Maybe I am just talking too much. Maybe she wants to just enjoy her evening, and here is this guy yapping with no end in sight.” So after some back and forth, I stopped talking and just enjoyed the night air and her company. This went on for like a minute or two until she asked, “Do you feel awkward walking in silence?” I told her I didn’t mind the silence and asked her what about her, and she goes, “Yeah, I feel awkward walking in silence.” *MORE INTERNAL SCREAMING.*
IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE SILENCE, THEN JUST GO AHEAD AND SAY SOMETHING??? It’s at this point I knew this wasn’t going anywhere. I even asked her if she wanted to talk about a certain subject or if she had any questions for me but she replied with a simple, “No, not really.” I mean, come on. So you don’t have anything to say but also don’t like walking in silence…how does that even work? So, I started talking about the reason why I won't ever do shots again, and she told me about her drunkest story ever. We got to her house. Finally. And we hugged goodbye. I’m not planning on ever seeing her again after this date because, sheesh.
So, I tried, guys. I really did. I tried dating girls within my age range, but I can’t do this. I’m going back to my MILF hunting habits, but that’s a story for another time. Was I in the wrong here? Did I do something I shouldn’t have done, or was it just her? I don’t know, do let me know.

Get to know you better game!
Tagged by @bobafvcks (whom I love and cherish <3)
Last song: Advice by Taemin. Other things I've been listening to a lot lately include: Black Cat Nero by Ateez (appropriate for this time of year), Deep Cleaning by Parn Thanaporn from the 4 Minutes OST (I fell in love with this song even before watching the series) and Держи by Мельница (my favorite group)
Favourite colour(s): ..still green
Watching: 4 Minutes (Thai BL, mystery thriller drama, basically made for me, but being spoiled for it killed my motivation to watch), The Loyal Pin (Thai GL, historical drama, reminds me a lot of old school shoujo manga), Mitsuya Sensei's Planned Feeding (Japanese BL, age-gap romance with the most adorable old man as the romantic interest and it's also an adaptation of my one of my favorite mangas about food and love and food as love - I have one episode left, but I don't wanna watch it because I don't want it to end), A Killer Paradox (Kdrama, just started so no opinion). And a bunch of stuff on Youtube, including Taskmaster Australia (series 2)
Last movie: How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (2024), which was very beautiful and touching. But by the time this gets posted, my last movie might actually be A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), because it's getting a theatrical release where I live and I want to go see it today
Sweet/savoury/spicy: I like all of them? My spice tolerance probably has gone up since I last did one of these tag games too
Relationship status: let's be real here
Last thing I googled: It was probably the romanization of Parn Thanaporn's name for this post
Last video game: Adding this because I think these tag games should have this question and also to whine. I'm playing Hollow Knight. People who follow me on Twitter know that I've been playing Hollow Knight for months now (close to year). And I still have one achievement to get. I'm in Hollow Knight purgatory. But I love it SO MUCH. My perfect little game <3
No-pressure-only-if-you-wanna-do-this tagging:
@heathyr, @fuhosh-i, @impending-doom-lol, @returning-spring, @vegaseatsass
@useryennefer, @melodydrifts, @heterodropit, @kat8porgs and @oforthetaintedsorrow
(Please pay no attention to those paragraphs, that's me trying to make the tags work)

Warriors Tidbits PT3
Swan and Cowgirl are actually old friends and used to be in a minor gang with each other before it devolved.
Swan was actually the reason that cowgirl actually joined the Warriors in the first place if the video games events are to be believed since they roughly joined around the same time.
Snow is the tallest of the Warriors and despite being openly friendly has an obsession with Kung Fu movies that they tend to practice.
Vermin despite being a casanova is implied to be the wisest of the Warriors and often tries to give advice even if they're loaded statements.
Fox is a Christian and is the scout for the group.
Cowgirl is the con artist that uses her trickery to swindle money from onlookers which helps the others out when it comes to getting quick cash.
Cochise specializes in Muay Thai, capoeira, and taekwondo and her fighting style at least within the video games it's so brutal that it makes the others afraid of her.
Cleon, Vermin, and Cochise have a former friend called Virgil who was the leader of the destroyers aka the original Coney Island gang before the former started the Warriors.
Virgil was a paranoid alcoholic that had had dreams of grandeur what was incredibly abusive and had a lot of self hatred because of how society treated him as a black man.
His awful behavior as a person is what caused the original Three Warriors to leave the destroyers and form their own gangs

This is a broad one, so take it whatever direction you wish: what are five shows, actors, or creative teams that have exceeded your expectations or pleasantly surprised you?
WOW. I struggle with broad asks because there's so much I like and think about.
Nadao Bangkok
Tumblr media
I loved Nadao Bangkok so much. I had basically only engaged with really stylish Thai movies and media before BL. It's the kind of stuff you see at film festivals. I was not really used to the quick and efficient production processes and talent pools of the TV show production of BLs. I adapted, but it was such a relief to watch things like Project S, I Told Sunset About You, I Promised You the Moon, and Great Men Academy. I also just adore the talent they cultivated and how so many Nadao alums are still doing things in entertainment. They really did something special there.
Koisenu Futari (2022)
Tumblr media
We talk so much about about representation and wanting to see more kinds of stories. I really loved the way this story explored the spectrum of asexuality alongside loneliness and the search for companionship. I love that it's a story about people who all care about each other, but they are all out of alignment for various reasons. I love that so many of the relationships don't resolve in a way that pairs people in an expected way. The sister left her cheating husband, Sakuko and Takashi don't live together, and Kazu was actually able to just be her friend. It's an unexpected delight.
For the Boys (2021)
youtube
I will never stop pimping this show out. Many of the folks are new to BL and queer TV in general, so they don't even remember Noah's Arc. I've been wanting more shows about black queer friend groups, and this show delivered. Every week I check on Slay TV to see what else they're up to. This show features a femme/GNC character finding their way through presenting publicly and dating, a fat black gay man struggling with body image and race identity issues, and a promiscuous black gay man struggling with his place in the world. It's a nuanced look at queer friendship, and I really wish more people would watch it.
Ossan's Love: In the Sky (2019)
Tumblr media
I already apologized to this show once, but I'll bring it up again. This AU season could have been a real flop, but in some ways it's my favorite. I love doing an AU as a way to soft reboot your characters and dig deeper into their interiority before returning to them years later. I like Haruta so much more because of this season. I also really love the bonds between men in this series and the ways they push each other. It's really excellent, and this is a special franchise we have been lucky enough to return to multiple times.
Sherri and Teri Polo on The Fosters (2013-2018)
Tumblr media
In an era where almost every TV lesbian died, these two delivered some of the best onscreen chemistry I've ever seen. They felt like a married couple for the entirety of a dramatic and often-messy Freeform (formerly ABC Family) TV show. We talk about Business Gay Performance (BGP) around here a lot, and these two are masters of their craft. At no point did you ever think these two actresses were secretly dating or cheating on their partners, but they were open about how much they loved each other and how important the friendship they built on this show was to them. I have immense admiration for the work they did and continue to do in the queer space. We are really lucky that these two took on the role of playing loving moms to all them kids, who got to also got to have a romantic and sexual relationship with each other onscreen.
Thank you for the ask! Since it wasn't explicitly BL, I decided to have some fun.

BECAUSE THEY'RE MY BABIES AND I NEED TO SPREAD THE AGENDA ABOUT THEM
LightningStorm hcs? 🥺🙏
HEHEHE YES
SOME NSFW TOPICS MENTIONED!!
they absolutely HATED each other before anything
those mfs wanted to see each other burn
then they realized they were gay
they both denied it for the longest time
Jackson actually was training with Cruz when she brought up Lightning
the look on Jackson's face was so lovesick
Cruz immediately just "omfg you're gay for Mcqueen!"
"No! >:T" (lies)
the third time they raced next to each other, it was intense
even the crowd could feel the tension
after the race they talked (like all racers do, dw)
all anyone saw was them both blushing like mad trying to be cool
eventually they stopped being idiots and went to friends to lovers
they really on that enemies to friends to lovers train and I love thay trope sm
Lightning asked out Storm
Jackson was SO NERVOUS
he almost said no out of pure anxiety
when he told Lightning that later on in their relationship he CACKLED
Also used it to tease Jackson
their first date was super cute tho
they were all dressed up and went out on the town
once they were official everyone was eating it up
Lightning ALWAYS had a hand on Jackson
that man's secret love language is touch and you can't tell me otherwise
during off season the two with go back and forth between their towns
eventually Jackson just moves to RS and just becomes apart of the family dynamic they all have there
they cuddle and watch movies on the nights they're both struggling to sleep
they smoke 🍃 and do the deed
Lightning will sit there taking drags as Jackson sucks him off
the bedroom life is insane for them
Jackson is a WHORE when it comes to things in his mouth
when they're not in the bedroom, he has to have gum, candy, mints, anything to keep him settled
in the bedroom? if Lightning's cock/fingers aren't in his mouth immediately that man will be a full fucking brat
Jackson isn't the only dirty one tho
Lightning loves being called sir/master
he won't be nice if Storm doesn't call him something like that
except daddy is off the table
neither of them like that
Lightning is a whore for Jackson and vice versa
if Jackson wears slightly revealing clothing or his shirt rides up?
it's done. Lightning is pining that mf to a wall and Jackson isn't walking for a good few hours
they love marking each other
Lightning loves when he can leave hickies/bruises all over Jackson. especially bc of the vice grip he has on Jackson's hips during it
Jackson loves it too
Lightning loves when Jackson leaves hickies in return
they both enjoy the idea of people knowing they own each other
if there's ever a race Lightning isn't in, he's in the pit as Jackson's crew chief
that mf has been racing for years. You think he's not gonna let his rookie in on the secrets?
everyone is jealous/angry with Jackson bc he learns all the tricks (old and new) from Lightning and wins basically every race
Cruz is even jealous but not like "wtf i should be winning this!?" its more of a "how did i not know these tricks????"
but she's just happy one of the guys she helped train is getting those wins
anytime one of them wins, they both know it'll be a long night
as soon as they step in the trailer, they're handsy and all over one another
one time in an interview, they got asked if they would adopt kids and they both paled
neither of them want kids
not because they hate them exactly, but it's just not for them
they in turn said they were happy with their golden retriever and black cat back home
they're both basically children anyway
when they first announced the relationship, there was some backlash bc of the age gap
since Jackson is in his twenties and Lightning his forties, people thought it was very... yeah
it eventually calmed down tho and everyone just enjoys the two tho
they bounce off one another like crazy
Lightning is very laid back in public, which gives Jackson the opportunity to be chaotic af
Lightning swears sometimes he'll get gray hairs from Jackson
even jokes about it in interviews
at home it's complete opposite
Jackson is calm and relaxed and Lightning is the one bouncing off the walls
same person, opposite reactions basically
THEYRE END GAME
When Lightning proposes to Jackson, they do it in a private setting
somewhere really nice. like a little forest hideout they found one day that became their favorite spot
they were gonna announce it in style but Lightning slips up
Jackson won a race after almost losing and everyone just heard Lightning basically scream
"THATS MY HUSBAND"
everyone lost their shit
there you go 🥰
if you don't like this then oh well. scroll on pookie

people i want to know better (the knowerrrr)
I was tagged by @eraserspiral via my main account, but using context clues I think this might be better here! Thank you for tagging me, it's nice to write something today that isn't a job application :)
1. Favorite Ships
Tav/Astarion (bg3) Spike/Buffy (BtVS) Jude/Cardan (The Cruel Prince by Holly Black) Howl/Sophie (both film and book incarnations for different reasons!) Garrus/Shepard (Mass Effect)
...I think these are the top 5? I could go on forever though lol.
2. First Ship
The first media pairing I went feral for/ first thing I read fanfic for was Spike/Buffy, but my first ship that I remember fundamentally altering my brain chemistry is Kaye/Roiben from the Tithe series by Holly Black (shout out to Roiben for being my first sad tortured man with white hair, we all have to start somewhere).
3. Last Song
Pretty Girls by Renee Rapp
4. Last Movie
Oh my god this is so cringe, yesterday I watched 'Ticket to Paradise' (the divorced parent film with George Clooney and Julia Roberts) to try and cure the black mood depression (very fun film tbh, so not *that* cringe!)
5. Currently reading
Last week I finished my mindblowing/soul-cleansing reread of The Wicked + The Divine Comics by Kieron Gillen. I sobbed my little heart out, fell in love all over again with both the art style and the insanely good worldbuilding concept.... i'm not currently reading anything, bc I'm still processing the high of binging all 9 in 2 days.... not to be dramatic, but it was like mainlining cocaine.
6. Currently Watching
Look, I *was* watching jjk for the first time and had just reached the Shibuya Incident before I got my bad news this week... and I have therefore made a very sensible, sane, and self-aware decision, and swerved wildly into watching the v. cute 'Sign of Affection' instead :')))))))
7. Currently Craving
I am about to go eat Thai food with a friend and just need to walk to her house BUT OH MY GOD I'M SO HUNGRY AND HAVE BEEN SINCE 4PM. so... 'thai food', I guess. as well as, idk... some fucking rest plz god plz.

Josh Hartnett: 'People genuinely thought I'd been thrust on them'
Ryan Gilbey
Twenty years ago he was one of the world’s hottest young actors, before he retreated – and ended up in Surrey. He explains why he had to leave Hollywood – and what he knew about Harvey Weinstein
Fri 23 Oct 2020 06.00 BST
Source :
Josh Hartnett is sitting at home in Surrey, thinking about the time he was asked to play Superman. “I had this idea that because he lives in this world where he can’t touch anything without it flying across the room, he has become almost afraid of himself and his own power. He doesn’t know how to be Superman any more. He’s so afraid, he has become almost neutered by the experience of living on Earth, where he can blow things up just by looking at them.”
The studio demurred – “They didn’t really want a fear-based character at the centre of their movie,” he says wryly – and Hartnett walked away. But his Superman concept now feels like a metaphor for what was happening at the time in his own life, as he became increasingly overwhelmed, even horrified, by his status and the hysteria that surrounded it. Twenty years ago, the hottest young male actors in Hollywood were Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck – and Hartnett. Michael Bay, who directed him in Pearl Harbor, put it bluntly: “He’s going to be fucking huge.” The actor grimaces at the mention of that. “Huge was never something I aspired to,” he says.
Back then, he seemed like a pretty kid who had got in over his head. Now 42, he has acquired the squinting, quizzical handsomeness of Richard Gere. He and his wife, the British actor Tamsin Egerton, moved to Surrey with their two young children to be closer to her parents, he explains. “And then, of course, coronavirus ...” In other words, they’re not going anywhere. So he has time to talk and a new film to talk about: the factually based thriller Target Number One, which is better than any of its plucked-from-a-hat titles (it has also been known as Gut Instinct and Most Wanted) might suggest.
This is partly due to the dazzling Antoine Olivier Pilon, star of Xavier Dolan’s psychodrama Mommy. He plays a real-life petty drug dealer who was sentenced to life in a Thai jail after being set up by Canadian police. Hartnett is solid in the less showy, meat-and-potatoes role of the journalist Victor Malarek, who fought to expose the truth. In this capacity, he gets to perform the time-honoured All the President’s Men routine of storming into his editor’s office, tossing a newspaper on the desk and demanding to know where the hell his story is.
Hartnett does his homework. On The Virgin Suicides, it wasn’t enough to play what the director Sofia Coppola had written; he also raked over his character, a dreamy high-school stud, with Jeffrey Eugenides, who wrote the original novel. On Brian De Palma’s film noir The Black Dahlia, Hartnett trained as a boxer for several months, simply because his character, a cop, used to be one. Naturally he met with the real Malarek before playing him. Why? “I wanted to see if he was full of shit.”
Malarek, he explains, has been accused by his critics of putting himself at the forefront of his own stories. “Ultimately, Victor is a humble man, but he does think of himself as someone who stands up for people in vulnerable positions. He likes to insert himself into a situation, though in my opinion what he’s really doing is putting himself in the line of fire. In a way, he almost downplays his own contribution.” Malarek has said that he had no idea who Hartnett was. As someone who has spent the last 15 years or so running from fame, this must have pleased him. “I didn’t assume he’d know me,” he says. “My interest in going to meet him was not to have flowers laid at my feet.” So he didn’t take along a signed Pearl Harbor poster? “I should have done. That would have been a great introduction. ‘Hi, I used to be somebody …’”
Quite. At the end of the 90s, Hartnett was everywhere. He starred in back-to-back horror hits – the aliens-in-high-school romp The Faculty and the sequel-cum-reboot Halloween H20 – and resembled a walking shampoo commercial in The Virgin Suicides, where he sashayed in slow-motion to the sound of Magic Man by Heart.
“It’s a little bit heartbreaking to see all that time has passed,” he says. “I was a child. I was 19. The Virgin Suicides felt like a group of friends all pulling together. I think I’m still looking for that experience whenever I make a film.”
The Faculty and Halloween H20 were produced by Dimension, the horror arm of Miramax, making Hartnett part of the Weinstein brothers’ stable of talent. “I was a kid who they felt they should invest in, but I didn’t spend a ton of time with them,” he says. “We had a sort of antagonistic relationship because the contract I signed for those first two films guaranteed me to be a part of, like, five more or something. They’re called contract extensions. I was told at the time that nobody ever uses them, but then I guess I became popular and they decided to, um, exercise that right. What they did a few times was to jump on other projects I was working on already and become co-producers.” These included O a modern-day Othello with Hartnett impressively coiled as the Iago figure, and the comic thriller Lucky Number Slevin, in which he seemed to be poking fun at his own image by spending the first half-hour scampering around in nothing but a towel.
He shifts uneasily when I ask whether he was surprised by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein. “There are all sorts of rumours about guys like that which permeate the business and you think, ‘That’s awful.’ The casting couch was a thing people joked about when I was first in the industry, so it was an open secret that this business is a little bit fucked up.”
When he was offered Pearl Harbor, his instinct was to turn it down. “I didn’t necessarily want things to change that much,” he says. “I was happy with the amount of fame I had and the types of roles I was getting. At the same time, I asked myself: ‘Am I just afraid that by doing Pearl Harbor, I’m going to enter a new category of film-making that I might not be ready for?’ I ultimately chose to do it because turning it down would’ve been based on fear. Then it defined me, which means I was right to fear it.”
His co-stars didn’t have it easy either. Kate Beckinsale was told to work out (“I just didn’t understand why a 1940s nurse would do that,” she said) while Affleck was ordered to get new teeth. “Well, they are great teeth,” Hartnett says. “I was asked to work out, too. But you know, I could have used it. I was 165lb wet. I was a really skinny kid.”
As well as his own misgivings about the project, there was the heightened press attention, including a splashy Vanity Fair interview with him from the set of Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down. “Oh, that was an awful piece,” he shudders. “Was there even a quote from me in it, or was it just everyone talking about how hot I was? People got a chip on their shoulder about me after that. They genuinely thought I’d been thrust on them. It was a very weird time.”
It was around then that he plotted his calculated retreat. After Superman, there were reports that he had also turned down Batman; in fact, he didn’t get any closer to that part than a conversation with Christopher Nolan. But the perception of him in Hollywood began to change. “They looked at me as someone who had bitten the hand that fed me. It wasn’t that. I wasn’t doing it to be recalcitrant or a rebel. People wanted to create a brand around me that was going to be accessible and well-liked, but I didn’t respond to the idea of playing the same character over and over, so I branched out. I tried to find smaller films I could be part of and, in the process, I burned my bridges at the studios because I wasn’t participating. Our goals weren’t the same.”
He has put his movies where his mouth is, working with idiosyncratic directors such as Tran Anh Hung on the thriller I Come With the Rain and Atsuko Hirayanagi on the comedy Oh, Lucy. Nor is he averse to the mainstream: he will next be seen alongside Jason Statham in Guy Ritchie’s Wrath of Man. But it’s a measure of how unusual it is for a star to withdraw so early in his career that by the time Hartnett made The Black Dahlia in 2006, GQ magazine was already referring to it as his comeback.
“I’m happy to be done with that era and to be making films that are more personal to me,” he says. “Directors are coming to me to play characters as opposed to versions of a hero I played in a movie once.”
He is nothing if not conscientious. A few days after our Zoom conversation, he phones me because something has been bothering him: he doesn’t feel he made his feelings about Weinstein clear. This time, he puts it as plainly as he can. “I wasn’t surprised he was a creep,” he says. “But I guess I was surprised at the extent of his creepiness.” He’s concerned, too, about what comes next. “The shameless seem to be finding it easy to make a comeback. Louis CK has been pretty shameless. Harvey Weinstein, if he had the tiniest bit of daylight in there, would find a way to get back in. Those are situations that freak me out.” But there are, he says, visible changes taking place. “Different things are expected of the way people act on set. There’s an open line of communication now for anyone who feels they’re being harassed. And there’s less of the so-called locker-room humour that people used to hide behind.”
Was he ever harassed as a young actor? “The last thing I want to do is come across like … You know, I’ve been in situations where I’ve been uncomfortable with my boss’s behaviour but I’m not gonna say …” He changes tack. “That’s not my experience and it’s not my place to claim that. It makes me feel icky to try to do so.”
He also tells me that he went back to that Vanity Fair article and realised it wasn’t so bad after all. “It’s just that it happened at a time when I wasn’t that famous, and it seemed to already be asking whether I should be or not. I felt like: ‘Oh my God! I’m not the tallest poppy yet – don’t cut me down!’ I was being compared to Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts and that’s insane. It was a set-up-to-fail moment.” He gives a sigh. “It was actually an interesting look at the nature of fame. If only it wasn’t about me.”

{ cont'd from here }
It's a Thursday. The leaves are spooling on the curbs in ten shades of Burberry beige. It's about sixty-one-degrees-Fahrenheit, far too warm for scarves, and it's October. He picks up a menu in his hands; warm and worried hands.
Ben blinks, considers a "Booberry Chai," changes his mind. Contextual nausea bubbles in his stomach. Chai, Chá. He tries not to think of places where the word chá means tea, and Thai means free man. He still sees a man burning.
'Champagne to Busan' and 'Pét-nat Sematary' (two horror genres he has seen and enjoyed) are thoughts that come and go; Chris doesn't serve Krug MV, and Ben doesn't drink anymore. He's listening—he met Chris's greeting with their signature handshake and a half-hug. He asks about plans with a half-smile.
Popcorn: good.
Pizza: good.
Mario Kart: good.
Grass: okay, indoors. Okay, with Chris.
Yes, he jumps when Chris addresses him again; his broad, black shoulders jerk up to his ears. Yes, he squints, and yes, his eyebrows knit while he's squinting.
"Chris. 'Babe.'"
Ben reaches over and takes his hand. Cool and soft; baker's hands. He holds the one like they're sitting shiva. Holding Chris's hand, he finally admits- "I haven't seen the first one. Talismans in the woods...?"
He thinks, avoiding any reflective surfaces and grinning bats. Avoiding the how have you not seen that movie expression blooming on Chris's face.
"Bad. No."
Releases Chris's hand to shrug and grin, feline-like and sheepish.
"But, ah, hey. Japanese popcorn. The non-sequitur Blaire Witch sequel. Why not? I've heard nothing but good things."
