"Oh, shit, I'm Moist," I say as I paint my pants gold, completely oblivious to the absolute horror of those around me, who are not, in fact, Discworld fans

When I find it hard to do certain things, I like to pretend I am a neanderthal living in a cave with my clan, and I must do The Thing in order to survive.
So, when I'm doing cardio at the gym, I'm actually chasing and tracking a mammoth, and when I need to cook, well, I'm not cooking on a stove top, I am hurdled over the first fire and watching the fat of our kill drip down onto the burning wood. And when I find it hard to crochet, I pretend that the first winter storm is coming and our clan needs me to make blankets to hurdle under and that I must contribute.
I hope whatever you do to do The Things will help. It is a uniquely personable trait to motivate yourself through pretend and stories. That's what makes this life interesting - that's what makes you feel larger than yourself 💛

Good afternoon honeys… just a little peek into my knitting set up in the workshop.
My work has not been going as planned as the techniques I am trying to do keep failing on me and it is incredibly frustrating, but I don’t want to give up on it since I am determined to be a specialist in this area of textiles soon enough. I spent so long on a single piece, my watch was telling me to take a break! I’d just had my lunch so I pressed on.
It’s annoying when you spend so many hours on something and barely have anything to show for it, but I am working hard regardless.
I’m listening to a Lofi Girl playlist on Spotify which is really keeping my nerves together bwahaha.
I also feel super weird today as I am wearing one of those really long smock skirts (never worn one before) and I don’t know if people are judging me or not. I think it looks cute.
Have a fabulous day, guys.

Many years ago I started stitching a cross stitch project. I got a little ways into it before I packed it away, for what turned out to be a very long time.
Maybe a year or two later I’m on a mission to finally finish all my WIPs, so I pull it out and see that there’s a big spot where the needle had been sitting, but it actually works really well with the pattern, so I leave it.
I finish it, I take it off the hoop to fix it up and there’s a very obvious line where the hoop used to sit. I could probably have fixed it if I washed it, but we’re leaning into it, so I don’t.
I recently moved and the piece ended up at the top of one of the moving boxes my cat stepped on and into with muddy paws. You can tell. It honestly just makes it better.
Here’s the final piece:
Tumblr media
I love it so much and it would not be nearly as good, if destiny had been kinder to it. It’s currently hanging in my kitchen, the place where I am most in need of this kind of calming energy.
I got some beautiful fucking mugs but FUCK lmao
the kiln over fired everything on the bottom shelf apparently because everything from that shelf (my mugs) got at least one flaw
but this mug turned out fucking hilarious with the flaw

it’s so much funnier than the original

everyone should attempt an artisan craft at some point in their life because it would cut down the number of comments questioning why handmade goods like ceramics or textile craft or woodworking are so expensive
and this is an unrealistic expectation, but I think the attempt should include seeing through to the end at least one "finished" item, no matter how clumsy or lumpy your first attempts might be. like to me, there's a huge difference in perspective between attempting to learn how to crochet or throw a pot for a few days, acknowledging that it's harder than it looks and giving up, versus committing to finishing that scarf or clay pot you started and working on it for weeks while you painstakingly learn from your mistakes and grow attached to your project while also simultaneously hating it.
once you finish the latter, your perspective changes from "why does this crocheted blanket cost $200" to "holy shit I can't believe they're charging $200 for this crocheted blanket instead of $2000" because you may have known crocheting is hard, you may have easily agreed with the idea that "handmade goods take time and effort" even before attempting a craft, but now you know firsthand the absolute time sink it takes to make things. like yeah dude, that one item took you 2 months to make and probably wasn't even an ultra complex item if it was the first thing you made, now imagine attaching an hourly wage to that time to calculate the cost (and this is ignoring every nuance of the artistic element and master crafters being able to work faster/charge higher because of their years and years of experience)
anyway this rant has been motivated by a comment I saw on someone else's ceramic post asking why a mug was $60 and they understand it's handmade but $60 just seems overpriced, and bro do you know how long ceramics take to make. that mug probably took at minimum 3 weeks between how long it takes to throw the mug, dry partially, trim the mug, dry fully, bisque fire, wait a day for the kiln to cool, sand and paint and glaze, glaze fire, wait a day for the kiln to cool, take product photography of the mug, write description and list the mug online for sale, im not even including the skill needed to complete all these steps without the mug literally exploding or collapsing while also making it an appealing piece of art, aaaaaaaaaaaaa

5/100 redux.
The previous post doesn't really count because I didn't accomplish anything productive (point of this blog) so we're doing 5/100 again.
Today there's a local recycling/upcycling event happening and I'm supposed to take advantage of it to get rid of stuff but I'm already a half hour late!!!
The first thing I wanted to do was to see if the textile recycling people are there again this year. Last year they got so many donations they stopped taking stuff before the event was over! They refused to take my stuff! I've been hanging on to a bag of rags since then. Hoping to get rid of them this year. If all I accomplish today is to get unsaleable, undonateable, unsewable, unuseable textiles out of my house then I will consider it a successful day.
First I need to get dressed and stuff!

managed to finish another decent ish piece so here's narinder's inutial design!! as always probably will change later
Tumblr media
we're living by furry laws in this house so "head fur" aka hair is an option and im using it. period. another unpopular(??) choice is giving narinder a fur pattern, and don't get me wrong i love the pure black void nari, but as an artist i enjoy making up details to draw, so i indulged myself here. (but if i ever were to draw comics with him i would simplify it or just make him all-black, because repeating this every frame is a misery. fun for a one-off ref sheet tho)
not a lot of lore stuff for the guy since the idea of the au is still fresh and im figuring it all out, but there're design inspirations under the cut if you're interested!!
Tumblr media
sooo lets go
i wanted narinder to have that dramatic sharp featured og cartoon villain look, so i took inspiration from oriental longhairs for the facial structure and from maine coons for fluffy dramatics. also i just love using maine coons as cat references. look at those things. marvellous.
from the very start (pretty much) my brain was consistently giving me images of narinder with hair, specifically dark long-ish straight-ish, so i tried to walk this mental image backwards to find the origins of it, and i think scar and ozai are my best bets. in my first sketches narinder had shoulder length hair with slight waves, but in the end i opted for long and straight. not really a reason to, just was vibing better to me
clothes are pretty standard narinder robes i think. i find it funny that fandom unanimously gave him basically a priest outfit, and i like it too, so i kept it. that red stripe gave me a little bit of a headache though, couldn't get it to look okay and not weird or tacky. i think i managed. i had to contain my urge to design him an intricate outfit with different textiles and embroidery and shit, but i try to keep it at least somewhat tied to logic and the au, and let's say that no-one was willing to do something this elaborate for narinder for quite some time
and some lore crumbs
• narinder is declawed (after his defeat that is).
see the narinder's claw relic and the whole do no evil motive. the most evil narinder directly did was the injures he inflicted on his siblings, and he did it by, quoting shamura, "such sharp claws". so yeah, that tracks. funfact i considered taking only one of his claws, from the left ring finger, because the relic is "narinder's claw" singular, but "callamar's ear" relic is also one ear and not two, so it didn't feel kike a good enough basis to take only one claw yk. so sorry big cat, all your claws are now gone
• lamb did kill narinder after defeating him. there's nothing on the pic that's tied to that fact, just thought it would be interesting to know

I did a thing ~
I know this is a simple thing to make compared to any other crochet outcome but as someone who has never made anything out of crochet before, this is huge!
I just wanted to share my success with you…
After a day of mishaps, this achievement means the world to me.
Enjoy the rest of your day, lovely.
