My only real gripe with Dropout is their subtitling. It is horrendous, I think especially on D20. Constant mistakes and seems like every other line won't make sense if you're deaf or hard-of-hearing.

I just have auditory processing issues so most of the time I can tell that the captions are wrong, but I can't imagine how misleading the captions are to folks with less of an ability to decipher the audio.

Like I'm sorry to sound harsh but hire someone new for that department, because the quality control is abysmal.

There’s a difference between using a phone’s built in text to speech for something and using online AI voice text to speech.

One is something that has been licensed. The people who provided the voices were paid. They’ve given their ok for people to use their voice to read text.

The other is stealing people’s voices without compensation and without permission.

Please for the love of God don’t get them mixed up. Just because something uses text-to-speech doesn’t automatically make it evil and bad and on the side of AI taking jobs.

PSA for TTS users: DO NOT USE SPEECHIFY

- the site supports and provides celebrity voice deepfakes

- uses generated images in web design and marketing

- made the T&Cs difficult to find and they have these clauses which is a wall of text but reads (to me) as "Nothing you submit is private, and we can use everything you submit for literally anything we want and there is nothing you can do about it"

- these things combined (to me) implies a data scraping trap

I honestly would avoid any tools like this that have cropped up in the post-2020 generative media boom; as with all things, read the T&Cs of any new tools you want to use very carefully

Something that I worry might get lost in the AI discourse, specifically around AI voices:

If you as an individual have purchased an ebook and are using the text-to-speech function built into your ereader for accessibility-- this is not an AI audiobook.

It's more like asking a friend to read a book you own out loud to you. You bought a book, not an audiobook, and you're using it in a way that people have always used books. Everyone involved in the creation of the book got paid, and no one lost their job. You don't need to feel guilty for using an accessibility feature.

It's very different from a publisher choosing not to put a job on the market because they decided to have a machine do the job instead. And very different from a producer stealing a real voice actor's voice by recording them and making a custom robot voice** from it, thereby denying them future jobs.

You aren't "supporting AI in stealing jobs". Individual choices in how you use what you buy are entirely different from how an industry as a whole values or devalues the work of human beings.

**The same technology is also used by people with degenerative conditions that will eventually stop them from talking, so the communication devices they use then will "have their voice." These "AI voices" are not taking jobs and should be respected.
