Meta has a major opportunity to win the AI hardware race
🟢 AI wearables have struggled significantly this year, despite early excitement surrounding their potential. Initially, the tech world was eager about devices like the Humane AI Pin and the Rabbit R1, which promised transformative experiences. However, neither has met expectations, echoing a pattern seen in past gadget hype cycles, such as with Google Glass and various augmented reality headsets, which have ultimately failed to achieve commercial success.
🟢 In an ironic twist, the most promising AI wearable currently is the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which have exceeded expectations despite skepticism about their viability. Unlike previous iterations, such as the Ray-Ban Stories, the Meta glasses successfully combine style and functionality, appealing to consumers who prefer fashionable designs over sci-fi aesthetics. Priced at $299, they offer a more affordable alternative to high-end devices while still delivering good audio and video quality, making them suitable for everyday use.
🟢 The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses incorporate AI features as practical enhancements rather than the primary focus. Users can leverage the AI for tasks like object identification, caption writing, and video calls, all of which integrate seamlessly into their daily lives. Although some AI functionalities might be imperfect, the glasses remain functional even if the AI underperforms, distinguishing them from other devices that have faltered.
🟢 Moving forward, Meta faces the challenge of improving its AI capabilities to transition from merely convenient features to indispensable tools that enhance everyday life. With a solid foundation established through style and usability, Meta has the potential to succeed in the AI wearable market. The upcoming Meta Connect event will serve as a crucial opportunity for the company to demonstrate its commitment to innovation in AI hardware, which could reinvigorate interest in this technology sector and solidify its leadership position.

The National Theatre in London has made their performances more accessible to deaf and hard of hearing patrons with smart closed caption glasses that use augmented reality.
The glasses pair transcripts of a performance with intelligent speech following software that’s able to recognize spoken words. They also recognize details like lighting and stage cues to deliver dynamic captions that are in-sync with the performance.
Before the introduction of subtitle glasses in the National Theatre, deaf patrons had to watch an open captioning screen on the side of the stage, causing them to miss out on both nuanced and major aspects of a show.
And previously, the National Theatre only offered 2-3 captioned performances per season. With their Smart Caption Glasses, they’ve now increased the number of performances accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing to 80%.

Project Orion, The Sequel.
Despite already writing a blog post about Meta’s "Project Orion” smart augmented reality glasses, I realized I didn’t specifically mention what made it possible to achieve the near-totally-normal glasses form factor. Similar to how Apple had to remove the battery from the Vision Pro to save on weight, space, and thermals, Meta removed the entire computational power into a separate compute unit that streams data to the glasses, which merely act as a receiver. While Meta might not have the most intuitive user interface or established ecosystem, they’ve certainly nailed the form factor. The downside being it costs about $10,000 to produce for now. As rumors circulate on what a lower cost Vision Pro might look like, I find myself hoping they take note of what Meta had done here. Could my MacBook do all the computing and wirelessly transmit to the glasses? Even better, could my iPhone do the same thing? In that case, I’ve spent significantly less on the glasses themselves and am taking advantage of the device I already carry with me everywhere anyways. These low barriers could make the Vision Pro SE a far more appealing product to a mass market audience than the Vision Pro ever could’ve been. Of course, there will be some drawbacks, as with every single AR or VR headset to date. But while the technology improves, I feel that we might as well take advantage of the serious power something as small and light as our smartphones have that might harness an untapped potential for wildly new experiences. If Apple feels that AR and wearables are staying for the long run, it seems fairly logical to combine them in a cost-effective, mass market appealing way given the struggles the Vision Pro has faced for not doing so.
