I keep getting Temu ads everywhere and their tagline "Shop like a billionaire" is the most out of touch slogan I've ever heard and immediately tells you everything you need to know about what kind of demographic they want to capture

They want the influencers whose whole brand is overconsumption and luxury while still trying to seem like a relatable everyman and the type of audience who likes that kind of content.

Overconsumerism

Imagine telling a starving child in Mexico that you're going to the store to purchase your 30th Stanley cup (You didn't have that shade of pink yet).

Ignoring the fact that they're impractical and will undoubtedly end up in thrift stores in a year or two, Stanleys are REUSABLE water bottles. Keyword REUSEABLE. This means that you don't have to get a new one every time you finish it. Also, no, you're Stanley doesn't need it's own backpack???

Imagine telling a child worker who is missing fingers at the ripe age of 7 from being so overworked because they're trying to help out their family that you have to go film your 4th Shein and Temu haul of the month.

We all know that these microtrends that you bought are going to stay in the back of your closet until you decide that they are ugly and throw them away. Unworn because you have a million other items of clothing that are overfilling you're closet.

If you are in a tough financial situation, I can understand buying a couple things from Shein, just so you have a couple new things. But if you are an influencer who is literally making bank and going on expensive, fancy trips for content and STILL buying HUGE hauls of cheap clothing made unethical by slaves, you are the problem and I hope you know whatever higher power you believe in is looking down at you in disgust and shame.

"Who wants to see my HUGE Shein haul 😋!!!" Nobody. The abused little girl who made it probably doesn't care that you just found the cutest top to wear this summer.
