MEDIC! - Teaser (Donald Malarkey x Fem!OC)
Tumblr media
Hey guys, i'm Kate and i'm new to this tumblr business, but i love writing and i love band of brothers so here i am...here to write and make friends with people who are here to do the same! There...is definitely more of this to come...like forty or so pages already written...anyway please enjoy this teaser/snippet and let me know what you think!
I sit in class, writing notes as the lecturer goes over the powerpoint of the class. My head hurts and I need to get a proper sleep, but life goes on before I can catch up these days. After the class ends I pack up my books and laptop into my bag as the other students file out of the class. I move slowly in no rush to leave. I have nothing to do after this except for study, which has been the normal now for three years. I am nearly at the end of my Bachelor of Nursing, only having this last semester to go before sitting my State Exam and then going out into the world as a Registered Nurse. The thought scares me that in about 3 months I will be properly in charge of patients and making decisions about their welfare. I shudder at the thought as I stand to leave the class, I make my way down the empty hallways as this was the last class for the night. I walk out into the cold night my breath showing on the air, I pull my cardigan closer trying to trap the heat that escapes me, the thin material of my nursing uniform offers me little relief but in my defence it was warmer during the day as spring poked its head out from the clouds bringing a lighter vibe to the air, teasing summer. I make my way to the now empty car park where my little car sits lonely, I unlock the door and slide in, sighing as I settle into the seat, today has been a long day. I plug my phone into the AUX, turning up the volume as I sing my way home. I get out of the car gathering all of my belongings before locking the door behind me, I turn to walk towards the apartment when a shimmer catches my eye, I double take focusing my eyes on the shimmering in the distance, I tilt my head unsure of what I am looking at as I move toward it.
A large surface glistens like oil in water, it’s transparent though I am able to see details behind it; it looks like looking through a bubble. I reach my hand out hesitantly as I get closer to the glare, my hand tingles like having pins and needles. The odd sensation makes me snatch my hand back and I look down at my fingers. Nothing seems to be wrong, they are normal in colour and no trauma seems to have occurred. I take a breath, reaching my hand out again, willing myself to be brave, my fingers stretch out stroking the transparent film. I gasp as my fingers disappear into the surface like putting my hand in a pool. I try to wretch my hand out of the shimmer but it pulls me further, as if someone is grabbing my hand and pulling me towards them. I panic gripping at my forearm to tug myself back, dropping my books and laptop as I do so. I disregard them, more worried about my limb being sucked into the glimmer. The force becomes stronger. I dig my heels into the ground but it is no use as I watch my whole arm has disappeared, my head frantically turning as I look for help. The force becomes stronger and my whole body is sucked through, I let out a yelp, my body rolls forward as I faceplant into the dirt.
A cheering crowd walks the street, I quickly get to my feet before I am trampled. “What. The. Actual. Fuck!” I look around, people cheer, sing and dance through the street waving flags, they move them so fast I can’t seem to recognise what flag they are representing. I gaze around. It appears to be a small village, people are dressed in older fashion than I am used to seeing, this fashion style hasn’t been around since the 40’s. My heartbeat accelerates, where am I? Where did that weird shimmer thing take me?
A lady close by laughs taking my hands in hers. She spins us around, I pull away and she says something in a foreign language. My heart skips several more beats, what do I know so far? I am in a foreign village and seem to be very far from home and some weird I guess portal thing spat me out here. My breathing quickens, I spin around searching for something, even I am not sure what will help anchor me to reality. I feel suffocated as people bump and jostle me, the loud singing and cheering is overwhelming my senses. I try to push through the crowd needing space to breathe and think. My eyes lock onto a tall man walking through the crowd dressed in army uniform, maybe he could help me? I push my way through the crowd reaching the soldier. I grab his arm clinging to him like a lifeline, he turns focusing his attention onto me. I notice the man has grenades strapped to his chest and a cigar hangs from his mouth.
“Hello!” I say loudly trying to be heard over the crowd, a thought hits me, what if he doesn’t even speak english. I brush the thought to the side, I still need to try.
“You’re American?” he asks, confused looking down at me.
“Yes, I was just wondering…”
“You’re a nurse?” He asks again, taking in my appearance.
“Yes, but…” I try again.
“How did you get here so early?” He looks confused, taking his eyes off me he scans the crowd.
“What?” early?
“Are there other field nurses with you?” he turns his attention back to me.
“I’m sorry?” This interaction is going the complete opposite to what I intended.
“Did you lose the other field nurses you came with?” He seems concerned, his eyes darting around the crowd again.
“I didn’t come with anyone.” I say thinking back to how I stupidly put my hand into the unknown substance. What the hell is wrong with me why can’t I mind my own business.
“Come with me, little lady.” before I can reply his big hand takes my upper arm moving me in front of him. The other hand rests on my shoulder as he steers me through the busy crowd, his firm grip is strong enough I cannot turn to look at him, to show my apprehension of being manoeuvred through the crowd to somewhere else unknown.

Prologue Teaser
Fandom: Black Butler
Word count: 2,274
This is a short introductory chapter to one of my many fan projects. It doesn't feature any canon characters, but is the backstory to an original character before they join the main cast. I will upload this, along with the second chapter (which will feature canon characters) to AO3 upon its completion. Until then, I wanted to share this short teaser.
In 1865, in the waning midsummer, a peculiar girl was born along the western coast of Italy. By the age of four, she claimed to see and hear things others couldn’t—spirits. This revelation brought her ridicule and even beatings from those who saw her speaking to the invisible. Her name was Lucia Santoro.
Raised by her single mother and blind grandfather, Lucia experienced two vastly different reactions to her gift. Her mother, overwhelmed by hardship, berated her, lamenting the burden of a child she believed was mentally ill. Her grandfather, however, understood. He would sit with her, telling her how special her gift was, urging her to treat the spirits with compassion. But after his death, Lucia’s mother became more unstable, lashing out more frequently. When Lucia was seven, her mother quietly took her own life while her daughter slept peacefully through the night. And just as they both departed her life, another presence entered.
Celia—a spirit who had once lived in England—took it upon herself to raise Lucia for several years. Under Celia’s stern yet caring guidance, Lucia learned to read, write, and speak English, along with many other skills. Though Celia could be strict, she was a motherly figure, teaching Lucia to be patient and kind, lessons that would stay with her forever. But when Lucia turned fourteen, Celia departed, vanishing without a word. From that day forward, Lucia never saw her again.
Despite her absence, Lucia was self-sufficient. She continued to hone the skills Celia had taught her, relying on spirits for companionship while avoiding people. Eventually, a spirit guided her to a special grimoire—an ancient text that would allow her to harness her abilities with greater precision. With the grimoire in hand, Lucia found herself drawn into all manner of adventures, each one teaching her more about the spiritual world she inhabited.
Yet, every gift comes with a cost. Lucia soon learned from other spirits that mediums like her often descended into madness by the time they reached their twentieth year. With no cure in sight, Lucia resigned herself to her fate, deciding to spend her remaining time aiding as many spirits as she could before her mind unraveled.

Along the western coast of Tuscany sat an old house that overlooked the Ligurian Sea. The house was generally quiet aside from the creaking of the floorboards and the occasional rat scuttling over them. The walls too were mostly hollow and drafty, allowing the salty air to permeate the insides. All would be rather quiet—for a normal person at least.
“Che palle! It's your birthday and you are spending it lying on the floor?”
A voice loudly passed through the walls, yet echoed off none of them. Its audibility did not reach the sensitive ears of a nearby mouse, which peacefully slept in the far corner of the room.
“Maria, don't be rude. If she wants to lay around, it is her choice to do so.”
Another voice spoke up in the quiet house, although not as loud as the other's. Once more the mouse slept peacefully and was undisturbed. The two voices might have well been non-existent to the small creature. Not that it was their target to begin with.
“Having a little rest is fine, but it's her birthday for God's sake! And just look at her—she looks like a corpse!” Maria's voice cried out before pointing at the cause of her frustration. She let out a sigh, trying to calm herself down before she continued speaking.
“By the way, when was the last time you even bathed, spazzatura della grondaia?”
While the other voice disapproved of Maria's referring to her as ‘gutter rubbish’, it hardly seemed to bother the woman who laid on the floorboards. It was a warranted question, as even by commoner standards, she was considerably filthy. Her reddish brown hair was pulled into a braid that had no shortage of debris woven in it. Though after a few seconds of thinking, she finally looked up at them, her silver eyes glossed over with exhaustion.
“I believe it's been… two weeks?” she answered, her voice slightly hoarse.
At the sound of her faint voice, the little mouse finally stirred from its slumber. It was not startled but now on alert. The small creature eyed the woman with caution as it observed her from across the small room.
“You are truly…” Maria wanted to say more, but knew that her words would hold no weight. If she had put off bathing for this long, calling her actions repulsive wouldn't change her mind.
Still lying lifelessly on the floor, the young woman gazed up at her two visitors. Both of them had come out of their way to find her. It would be rude to completely ignore their concerns. Even if they didn't matter much in the end.
“I’ll wash up later, I promise. The ocean is right outside,” was her response. Just as she said that, the sound of waves crashing against the cliff side echoed upwards to the house.
“I might as well drag you in myself! Are you trying to make yourself ill?” Maria growled, but fully knew that that would be a task too difficult in her current state.
Ignoring her continued protests, the other woman turned her attention to the less demanding soul in the room.
“Anthony?” the woman all but rasped out—a side effect of not having water in several hours. “Why did the two of you come to find me today?”
The two people that had visited the still alive woman were far removed from the average person. Or rather they were people once. While they still had the forms of their old human selves, it was rare that others could see or hear them. One of the people given such a gift was the one they chose to converse with. And with that ability came a moral duty.
“Why, to visit our friend Lucia on her birthday of course! At your age, you mortals still count birthdays. This is… your twenty-second, yes?” he said with an incredulous smile on his face. Most likely not the whole truth, but a good enough excuse.
“Twenty-third,” Lucia corrected, a weakened grin forming on her face. “But astoundingly accurate for a spirit. You all are always losing track of time. I'm honestly a bit jealous.”
The dead never had to worry about trivial things such as time. Nor did they usually concern themselves with the living. But as Lucia was one of the only people who could converse with them, she was a bit higher on their radar. After all, through her they could interact with the living world in a more personal way.
“We also came across some news you may be interested in,” Maria said, drifting over to sit in front of Lucia. Half of her legs sunk right through the floor as she did so.
And there it was. Lucia couldn't help but smile though. Even now, the spirits would come to her for aid.
“This noble, Damon-something, recently experienced quite the horror in England while on a business trip,” she chuckled, grinning mischievously. “His skin was all charred and he kept going on about this haunted Phantomhive mansion. Might be something particularly exciting you'd want to look into.”
News from the spirits had to be another big reason why she continued to stick around, even in her current condition. Their retellings may not be entirely accurate and sometimes too dramatic, but she still loved hearing from them either way. That said, a man nearly getting burned alive was nothing new. Same went for haunted houses. However, something else stood out to her.
“The Phantomhive estate…” Lucia muttered as she recalled the familiar surname.
This wasn't the first time she had heard about it. It was around two years prior during the winter when she was first told about that place. The entire mansion had gone up in flames after most of the inhabitants were killed. With that little bit of information, it wasn't enough to warrant an investigation. And Lucia was already past twenty at that point.
“It's too much of a hassle to go all the way there. Besides, there are plenty of wayward spirits I can assist here in Italy,” Lucia said, brushing off the suggestion.
There was no reason for her to even leave this house. Especially not when the madness could settle in any day now. It should have already consumed her. So she'd rather be in a secluded area to pass away peacefully.
“But isn't helping other spirits like that more important? If they cause too much trouble, they could end up exorcized!” Maria growled, much to the surprise of her ghostly companion.
There was a lot of truth to her words. It was not unheard of for a particularly angry spirit to possess severely dangerous supernatural abilities—starting fires was one of the more common ones. Priests would be sent to dispel any demonic activity and sometimes that included angered spirits. In actuality, most spirits themselves were not wholly evil and bent on harming others. So Lucia would often seek them out to calm them in an attempt of saving them from a second, more permanent death.
But she never did leave Italy, except one time to go to France. It was just simpler to stay in one spot for years. If spirits wanted to seek her out, finding her was easy. But most simply stayed in their respective regions out of convenience.
“Have you really lost all resolve to continue caring about us?”
Those words caused her eyes to widen and her slow heartbeat quickened. All her life she had spent for the sake of helping wayward spirits. Her true companions. Gone out of her way at times just for their benefits.
“You know that's not true—”
Her words were cut short when she felt a rumbling underneath her. Another wave had crashed into the side of the rocky cliff. Just a little too hard as the cliff's resistance to water erosion was wearing thin. One more would send part of the cliffside—and the house—down to the rock littered waters below.
Lucia's survival instincts had her clamber to her feet and rush down the steps that led to the ground floor. Just as her feet reached the last step, half of the house decided to break apart and fall down the cliff. In just a few more paces, Lucia launched herself into the slightly muddy grass as the remainder of the house fell into the ocean with a large splash. Just for good measure, she furthered herself from the cliff before plopping down into the muddied grass.
“England, was it? Maybe I'll go after all,” Lucia chuckled, suppressing a louder laugh at the loss of her shelter.
Maria shook her head at that.
“You only say that because your tomb—”
“Che meraviglia! Celia will be so proud that you decided to visit her home country,” Anthony interrupted the other spirit with enthusiasm as he clapped his hands together.
A wry smile came to Lucia's mouth as she thought about her old caretaker. She hadn't seen her since she was fourteen, over nine years ago. There was a chance that she'd meet her again in England. But Lucia didn't want to get her hopes up.
A shrill whistle came from down below, where the house had crashed into the ocean. Within moments, a small trail of black fog shot over the cliffside and spiraled around in the air for a bit. It flitted around in the air for a moment before attempting to dive bomb Anthony—who quickly shifted out of the way. The black ball apparition made its new target Lucia as it landed at the spot next to her feet.
“Did you lose the rats you were haunting, Fairy?” Lucia asked it as the black blob morphed into a giant rat before returning to its round shape. It let out a wailing cry, seemingly saddened at the losses.
“Oh? Fae's still with you?” Maria asked, watching the animal spirit swivel around Lucia before resting above the mortal’s shoulder.
“She comes and goes—just like everyone else,” Lucia said, tickling the spirit blob as it nipped at her fingers.
Unlike the other two who would most likely stay in Italy, Fairy, an animal spirit, held no sentimentality to the land she haunted. So there was a fair chance that she'd accompany Lucia to England too. While not as communicative as a human’s spirit, there were plenty of tasks Lucia could accomplish with Fairy alone. The little spirit was also a bundle of entertainment.
The journey to England would take several days and a lot of patience. But with nothing else to lose, Lucia was willing to go through with it. Her last act before the madness took over—whenever that will be. Having a goal to work towards was certainly better than rotting away in some abandoned house.
For the first time in a while, the tiniest flicker of excitement stirred in her heart. This would probably be the most adventurous thing she'd done since the short excursion in France several years ago. She didn't know how long this trip would last, or even if she'd return to Italy at all. But she was too enthused to think about the specifics.
Lucia Santoro would finally see what England was like with her own eyes. Only hearing stories and rumors from others, she could only envision it so clearly. In a matter of weeks or perhaps days, she'd uncover many dark secrets lurking beneath the country's polished surface.
It would be to die for.

Tweezlers Twislers Teasers!!!
Hidy, howdy, hey, fellow strangers!!
As for a celebration of my recent resurrection on this websters website, I have a few teasers of some upcoming works for you all!!
What you will find are small teasers for an upcoming artwork adding to my collection of pieces of a fan-made house, and my next fanfiction. Both are for---of course---Welcome Home!
This right here is another viewpoint of the living room of the fan-made home I've created! I'm very excited to finish this piece, as it will be the last one of the living room! Hopefully if all are viewed together it will lead to a clear view of what the living room looks like in full.
I've been having so much fun on these with adding details and such vibrant colors! It's admittedly a small bit difficult to recreate some of the details in other views, but it pulls it all together in such a way, I can't refuse to add them!
Tumblr media
And next is my next upcoming fanfiction! This is only a small bit of what the work will turn out to be, but for you fanfiction...well, fans out there, I will let you in on this small teaser!
Green with Envy (Howdy x GN! Reader)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was like a fairytale. And like most, it all started with a wave and a smile.
It was a calm and slow evening---your first one in the neighborhood, in fact---when you were wandering around getting familiar with your new home. Unpacking had been a pain that day, and had taken twice as long as you originally thought it would. You had already met most of your neighbors, but much to their disappointment---and yours---none of them could stay long to chat and help unpack.
The paper in your grip crinkled and waved in the gentle breeze. A small homemade brochure, scrawled in crayon and covered in glitter. The neighborhood's mailman was the first to visit. He greeted you with a tip of the hat, a friendly smile, a letter hand-written from each neighbor greeting you, and a handmade brochure for a play one of your neighbors was hosting tonight. Your gaze travelled down back to it as your eyebrow twitched. While you had only met a few of them, you already found many of your neighbors were quite….unique, in a way. Other than them being puppets, of course. Each with a different major interest and equally as thrilled to have you in the neighborhood. From art, to comedy, being a mailman, and even playing games made up on the spot.
Living here will be quite interesting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aaaaaand there you have it! There are your teasers for now! Keep in mind these are very much a work-in-progress, so they may change with time and work!
Alrighty tighty, then! That's all for now, fellow strangers! I dearly hope you all have a fantabulous day, and remember that the world is your oyster! Keep on oystering it up!

Upcoming Magical Girl Projects
Magical girl fans are finally eating good after years of starvation. So good, in fact, that I decided to make a list of magical girl projects in development.
Tumblr media
The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies - The most imminent of these projects, since it's premiering only in a few days. It's the story of the forbidden romance between the magical girl Byakuya Mimori and Mira, a high-ranking official of an army trying to take over the world.
Tumblr media
Mermaid Magic - In a new western magical girl show from the same studio as Winx Club, Princess Merlinda, with her friends Sasha and Nerissa in tow, ventures to the human world in order to find a way to save her homeland of Mertropia from the ghost pirate Barbarossa and his monster horde. Dropping on Netflix next month.
Tumblr media
Acro Trip - One of several new magical girl series coming out in the Fall 2024 anime season, Acro Trip follows Chizuko Date as her efforts to increase appreciation for her idol, local magical girl Berry Blossom, takes her down a "dark path filled with strange folks."
Tumblr media
Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc. - Kana Sakuragi is having a hard time finding work, botching over 15 different job interviews. However, her luck changes when a series of events lands her a job at the magical girl company Magilumiere.
Tumblr media
The Story of the Girl Who Couldn't Become a Wizard - The third of the magical girl anime coming out in October, MahoNare for short tells the story of Kurumi Mirai as she tries to become a wizard anyways after failing to get into her school's magic division.
Tumblr media
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie - Walpurgisnacht Rising - The fourth PMMM movie, which will pick up where Rebellion's massive cliffhanger left off. It's currently set to come out sometime later this year.
Tumblr media
Cute High Earth Defense Club Eternal Love! - The magical boy series is getting a new movie in winter 2025 as part of the celebrations for its 10th anniversary. While the movie will "consist entirely of new scenes that will be newly drawn," exact plot details are unknown. (Added August 7, 2024)
Tumblr media
Mahou Tsukai Precure: Mirai Days - A new installment in the Precure franchise, Mirai Days will serve as a sequel to Mahou Tsukai, the thirteenth season. Even though it's premiering early next year, specific plot details are currently unknown.
Tumblr media
Princess Session Orchestra - A TV original coming next year, Princess Session Orchestra is based on a concept by Akifumi Kaneko, one of Symphogear's co-creators. The land of Alicepia's peace is destroyed when monsters called Jammerwocks attack, prompting a trio of young girls to step up the plate to protect the realm.
Tumblr media
Winx Club - The western magical girl classic is getting a CGI reboot. While comments by Iginio Straffi imply that certain characters who were introduced later in the original series (such as Roxy and Nabu) will appear earlier, no specific plot details have been revealed so far. The series is coming to Netflix late next year.
Tumblr media
New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt - Panty & Stocking is getting a second season after over a decade that's coming out sometime next year with no specific plot details revealed yet. (Added August 7, 2024)
Tumblr media
Project Symphogear Next - A new Symphogear movie was announced late last year. However, no further details have been revealed.
Tumblr media
Hua Xianzi: Zhi Mofa Xiang Dui Lun - A co-production between Tencent Video and Toei Animation's Shanghai branch, this anime is being billed as a "remake" of Lunlun the Flower Fairy. That being said, promises of "a fresh story and characters" make it sound more like a reboot.
Tumblr media
Studio Pierrot's new anime - Studio Pierrot, which has made a variety of magical girl anime from Creamy Mami to Tokyo Mew Mew, has announced that they're creating a new TV original magical girl anime. No specific details have been disclosed, but the caption for the teaser image ("I want you to sing once more...") implies that it'll be a magical idol anime.
Tumblr media
Lolirock season three - After Lolirock's second season ended with a cliffhanger all the way back in 2017, it seemed like the story would never get a proper conclusion. However, the series's creator and director, Jean-Louis Vandestoc, announced on his Instagram in 2023 that creative meetings for a third season have begun.
Tumblr media
Magic Knight Rayearth revival - TMS Entertainment is making a new Magic Knight Rayearth anime in honor of the franchise's 30th anniversary. Unfortunately, it's currently unknown what the format will be.
Tumblr media
Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card season two - The sequel to the magical girl classic is getting a second season that will adapt the rest of the manga.
Tumblr media
Magical Girl holoWitches - A multimedia project starring six VTubers as fictionalized versions of themselves who work as both streamers and magical girls who save people when they get trapped in the magical Holocas World. There was a four minute extended trailer in May, but the anime's proper premiere date is unknown.
Tumblr media
Ojamajo Doremi 16-20's - An adaptation of Ojamajo Doremi's light novel sequel series, which follows the girls as they grow from being in their mid-teens to early 20s. Interestingly, the format for the adaptation (TV show, movie, or streaming series) will be based on the reception of a music video featuring the girls as adults.

In recent years, we've seen a shift in how trailers are released. Many production companies now opt for teaser trailers, followed by full-length versions. This strategy keeps fans engaged over a longer period, as each release builds anticipation for the show's premiere.
As viewers have become more discerning, trailers have evolved to include more diverse storytelling elements. Today’s trailers often reflect the complexity of characters and intertwine various plotlines. This trend allows audiences to connect more deeply with the series before they even watch an episode.
An important aspect to consider is the impact of TV series trailers on the show's marketing strategy. They often serve as a crucial element in the overall promotional mix, alongside posters, interviews, and social media campaigns. A strong trailer can significantly boost a series' visibility and attract a broader audience.
In conclusion, TV series trailers are not just promotional tools; they are artistic creations that encapsulate the essence of a show. As the landscape of television continues to evolve, the role of trailers in shaping viewers' perceptions will undoubtedly remain significant.

In light of season one of IWTV hitting Netflix soon, here’s just a few things I want to (re)state wrt the show itself and asks in general:
The Vampire Chronicles IWTV is built on has 13 books
The first two seasons are only the first book with some inclusions of later ones
There is a big shift in tone between IWTV and later books, as the rockstar teaser already makes clear
Season 3 will be built on the second book, called “The Vampire Lestat“
Lestat is and will be the main (anti) hero of the show. Louis is the main narrator for the first book, Lestat is for the upcoming four. That does not mean that Louis will disappear, but it does mean the focus will shift a bit
I have been a fan of the VC for decades. I love the movie and the show. I had not dared to hope for a show like this. If you ask me something I will answer with that background knowledge, which might contradict show-only-current knowledge since this show (and the books) only offers very flawed POVs and no absolute truths. Any hate bc of that will lead to a block (and yes blocking anon is possible).
The show gives a brilliant social commentary on a variety of issues, not the least patriarchy or racial discrimination, cycles of abuse and so on. However, it is important to differentiate the in-universe story level and that added social commentary level in discussion. And to differentiate the actors from the characters AND to realize you (we all) might not know all after season one. Don’t come to me if you cannot do that.

Okay, let's finally talk about EPIC's Apollo
I feel very compelled to say, first of all, that I do not dislike Epic. In fact, I am very fond of Epic and have been following its production and status very eagerly! I attend all the launch streams, I watch all of Herrans' update videos; I am, at the end of the day, a fan and I want it to be known that my words are spoken out of love and passion as much as they are spoken from a place of critique.
So really, what my problem with Epic's Apollo?
In the briefest possible terms; the choice to have Apollo be defined by his musical aspect in God Games is thematically strange. And not in the 'oh well in the Odyssey, Apollo was important to Odysseus and his family so it's weird that that wasn't kept in Epic' strange, strange in the sense that Odysseus' character arc since My Goodbye has been getting more and more obviously Apollonian and so it is positively bizarre that when we get to meet Apollo, the god seems entirely disinterested in him and his affairs. So much so that he is not even defined by any station that would indicate that he has been watching over and protecting Odysseus and his family.
What do I mean by 'Odysseus has been following an Apollonian arc'? I'm so glad you asked!
Remember Them is the last song in which Odysseus explicitly uses his sword until Mutiny where he must use it to defend himself against Eurylochus' blade. He uses it to help enact the plan to conquer Polyphemus and, due to Polites dying in that battle, Polites who wished for Odysseus to put the blade down entirely and embrace a post-war life, Odysseus also retires his sword. This is an action that symbolically separates him from Athena - and the image of Odysseus as a traditional warrior set for him in Horse and Infant - as much as My Goodbye physically separates him from the goddess and her war-ways - from this point onwards, Odysseus will no longer be leaning on Athena's wisdom or methods to solve his problems. Likewise, he will no longer be able to rely on her protection.
Odysseus thusly solves most of his upcoming problems through diplomacy and avoidance. He approaches Aeolus - a strange and ambiguous god (both in gender and in motivation) and appeals to them for help. Circe too, he approaches not with wishes to conquer or for revenge, but for the safe returning of his men and an alternate way forward. In all of these scenarios, there is some Apollonian element which is subtly interweaved alongside the influence of other gods; it is with a bow and arrows that Polyphemus' sheep is slain (and thus it is this Apollonian element which is at the root of Odysseus' spat with Poseidon), it is a vision of Penelope that warns Odysseus that his men are about to open Aeolus' wind-bag, Circe's peace offering to Odysseus is to refer him to a prophet of Apollo who has since died.
In this way, Apollo is walking alongside Odysseus for all of his journey after Athena departs - even in the Underworld, he is guiding him. It is Tiresias' proclamation that is the last straw for Odysseus, it is by the power of a mouthpiece of Apollo that Odysseus decides to embrace his ruthlessness. It is with the bow and arrow that Odysseus subdues the siren who sought to trick him, likewise, Odysseus does not attempt to undermine or escape the fate of paying Scylla's passage price - he knows of the doom about to befall the six men and quite unlike the rest of the journey until this point, he does not fight against it. This all comes to a head on Thrinacia where it is a blade which sacrifices the sun god's cow and brings destruction upon the crew once more.
My point with all of this is that when I heard the teasers for God Games years ago, it made perfect sense to me that Apollo would be Round One - he is not Odysseus' adversary and has no reason to oppose Athena's wish to free him. From other teasers about what will happen in the climax of Epic, Apollo will still be walking alongside Odysseus - it is Apollo's bow that Penelope will give the suitors to string. Likewise, it is Apollo's bow that will prove Odysseus' legitimacy and identity. That bow will be the power by which Odysseus hunts his adversaries and cleans out his palace - it is Apollo who is the avatar of Odysseus' ruthlessness, not Athena.
So tell me, truly, what was the point of having Apollo raise a non-argument in God Games? Why have him appear unconcerned, aloof and slightly oblivious? Why have him appear in his capacity as the Lord of Music at all?? And if the intention was never to make Apollo an active player in Odysseus' life like he was in the Odyssey, why keep Odysseus as a primary archer?
The answer of course is that Apollo is inextricable from the fabric of the Odyssey - his influence and favour exudes from Odysseus just as much as Athena's. In Athena's ten year sulk, it would have been Apollo who kept Telemachus and Penelope safe. It would have been Apollo protecting Odysseus from Poseidon's gaze as he travelled the seas (according to the Odyssey anyway)
Forgive me for not being excited about something that I thought was being purposefully set up. I was extremely ecstatic about all of the little Apollonian details that litter the sagas because I know where this story ends up (loosely) but all God Games did was reveal that maybe those Apollonian details were not intentional at all, but merely the ghost of the Apollo who persistently haunts those he favours, even if he cannot explicitly come to their aide in an adaptation.
