I want a hilarious fic where Nico accidentally calls Vergil some variation of “Dad” but like, it the way some kids accidentally call their teacher “mom”.

Like, she doesn’t actually see him as a father, but she Does see Nero as a brother. With him occasionally pulling the “c’mon dad” line out to get Vergil to do something, she’s picked up mentally referring to him as “dad” sometimes too.

I just think I would be funny (and literally Anyone would be a better dad for her than Agnus. Fuck that jackass. She deserves better)

(Assuming Cassandra knows Casey is her future son, I just picture her being like, "Hey, wanna see a cool thing I made?" and then grabbing Casey and holding him up like Simba in the Lion King, being all like, "LOOK AT MY AWESOME SON!! GAZE upon his MAGNIFICENCE!"

I already preach that Leo would be a DMC fan and would idolize DMC3 Dante, so meeting one of his favorite characters would probably send him into fanboy mode.

Overall I think they'd be shocked to meet people that are more built different™ than they are and I don't think the Sparda's would find the situation that weird considering what they've seen and done. The real kicker would be the boys seeing how insane the family dynamics are between those three, like there's the disaster twins and then there's THE disaster twins. Like what do you mean you tried to kill each other multiple times??? What do you mean y'all stab each other often??? What do you mean you two first met and filled each others with stab wounds AND bullet holes???

They'd also all try to fight Dante cause like cmon guys he may have demon powers but there's four of us plus the Casey's AND we have ninpo (they get their asses handed to them and styled on, Nero just sits and watches while Vergil is sitting and reading).

Oh but see. Apparently this is only a tradition in my hometown, but we have these things called "sparrows" in our high schools. Basically, at the end of senior year, classes will prepare a special performance for prom. This can be a play, a song, anything, really, as long as it's creative, made to represent the class (usually making fun of the teachers) and can be performed at prom.

I feel like that could live on in yumenosaki :3

All: had been in Manhattan for something fun, then got lost on the q, then had to head all the way back from the end of the line to Queens, made it to one of the safe stations i could transfer only to face the MTA deciding multiple times that they could no longer send a train following the proper routes i needed (i got on and off so many trains), and ended up leaving from the closest station i knew, speed-walking home in the freezing cold, cursing God and the MTA, until my dad finally came to escort me home safely.

Cochise: i have gone to parties for way older people. i get all the nice perks with a twist: i have to do karaoke performances for my mom and her friends at parties or cheer on their karaoke. i've done this multiple times. my voice will literally die and i can't keep up after a couple of songs, even though these middle-aged ladies can. i persevere for the sake of food and drinks.

Cowgirl: once saw an extra virgin olive oil bottle and spaghetti and instead of being sane and thinking about recipes, i fully blurted out "once your spaghetti comes to a boil, stick your d*** in some extra virgin olive oil." IN THE MIDDLE OF A CROWDED SUPERMARKET. IN THE LINE TO THE CASHIER SURROUNDED BY STRANGERS.

Fox: i once outran a train because i could. i had a bit of a lead because i was in the middle of the platform once it started coming in but trains are pretty fast. it was coming up from behind me but i kept running. eventually i could hear my friends saying i already outpaced. i looked behind me and sure it was, behind me. pretty cool.

Cleon: i was in a short film where i got beaten up multiple times. thrown into stairs, shoved against a wall, etc. not as bad as my co-star who i strangled and also shoved into walls but it was pretty bad. we also broke the boys bathroom door during this (it was in the stairwall we were working with) so it was a funny bit of teamwork where i was the lookout and the one holding the still working door shut in case staff tried to come in and the other guys were just doing their best to pick the door lock to get it open and unbroken.

Ajax: once shoved my head through the subway doors to try and get through while it was closing (i wanted to get home quick and my friends were already on). ended up accidentally getting it clamped on my neck so i basically had to shove it open with my bare hands. if it's funnier... i'm in middle school during this. so imagine you're like a full blown adult sitting on the train and all of a sudden, you're watching a 13 year old, with braces and tiny pink strands flowing through her brown hair, shoving a door open with her hands while her friends are trying their best to help. you don't know whether to continue staring or clap once she gets through and finally on the train.

Rembrandt: got high in the middle of the park with my friends and instead of being chill like i expected, i went on a rant about the artistry of dante and vergil, fanfiction, and both of their connections to each and the veil, reaching beyond life to things we cannot touch. i also was real rambly and uneloquent compared to how i am irl.

Swan: once had a sprained shoulder the day before my kickboxing practice. I still went in and told the teachers only to realize both didn't hear me. i didn't feel like repeating myself so i pushed myself through the rest of the class. i then listened to a scolding from one of the teachers at the end for not putting my all into it, nodding along as if i didn't have a shoulder injury because i didn't want to sound like i was making up excuses last minute.

Mercy: once had such a crazy crush on a girl that i was willing to brawl with some other people. i then got shoved under a bus seat while she was punching a guy on top of it. she helped me get out after but ugh did i have to stare at chewed up gum for a while.

Three Students Just Deciphered the First Passages of a 2,000-Year-Old Scroll Burned in Vesuvius’ Eruption

A Roman scroll, partially preserved when it was buried in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79, has been virtually unwrapped and decoded using artificial intelligence.

The feat was achieved by three contestants in the Vesuvius Challenge, a competition launched in March 2023 in which people around the world raced to read the ancient Herculaneum papyri.

Papyrologists working with the Vesuvius Challenge believe the scroll contains “never-before-seen text from antiquity,” and the text in question is a piece of Epicurean philosophy on the subject of pleasure. The winning submission shows ancient Greek letters on a large patch of scroll, and the author seems to be discussing the question: are things that are scarce more pleasurable as a result?

The author, whose identity is unconfirmed, doesn’t think so: “As too in the case of food, we do not right away believe things that are scarce to be absolutely more pleasant than those which are abundant,” one passage from the scroll reads.

The three members of the winning team had previously individually made significant contributions to the competition. Luke Farritor, a computer science student at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Youssef Nader, a machine learning Ph.D. student at Freie University in Berlin, had been two of the first contestants to detect a smaller number of letters, winning $40,000 and $10,000 respectively. Julian Schilliger, a robotics student at ETH Zürich, developed a tool that began to automatically segment the scrolls. They will share the $700,000 grand prize.

Nat Friedman, a tech investor and executive, and one of the challenge’s organizers, recently printed out the winning submission. “All this has been in this dreamlike digital world in my imagination before," Friedman says. "Seeing it on paper, rolling it up, it just made it so tangible.”

There’s a lot more to discover. The scroll partially decoded by the winning submission was one of 800 discovered in a southern Italian villa that was first uncovered in 1750. The combined efforts of the competitors and organizers so far have resulted in around 5% of one scroll being read.

The final scramble to read the scrolls

Since the Vesuvius Challenge launched nearly a year ago, participants had both cooperated and competed, sharing their latest techniques with each other and posting pictures of their progress. But as the race for the grand prize intensified, the Discord, a social media platform where the participants shared information, went dark, says Friedman.

Of the eighteen submissions for the grand prize, most of them were received on the last day of the contest, Dec. 31, and three were sent in the final ten minutes, according to Friedman. Friedman recalls he was at home with his family around Christmas, decorating for the holiday while compulsively refreshing his phone, when the winning submission came in. “I ran into my little office at home and popped it open,” he says. “I was like, ‘Wow, this is really magnificent.’”

In accordance with the criteria set in March 2023, the winning submission contains four passages of 140 characters each, with at least 85% of the characters in each of those passages recoverable by professional papyrologists. It also contains a further 11 columns of text.

It isn’t known who authored the ancient scroll, but experts have developed theories. “Is the author Epicurus' follower, the philosopher and poet Philodemus, the teacher of Vergil? It seems very likely,” writes Richard Janko, professor of classical studies at the University of Michigan. “Is he writing about the effect of music on the hearer, and comparing it to other pleasures like those of food and drink? Quite probably.” Robert Fowler, a professor of Greek at the University of Bristol, also believes the author to be Philodemus. “Like other Epicureans, he valued pleasure above all - but pleasure rightly understood, not mere indulgence,” Fowler writes of the philosopher.

In the final section of the scroll, the author appears to criticize his intellectual adversaries, who “have nothing to say about pleasure, either in general or in particular, when it is a question of definition.”

“I can't help but read it as a 2000 year old blog post, arguing with another poster,” says Friedman. “It's ancient Substack, and people are beefing with each other, and I think that's just amazing.”

What comes next

The Vesuvius Challenge has issued a new grand prize for 2024 that will allow the AI-enhanced decoding to move at a faster pace.

The competitors largely have been developing algorithms for automatic letter detection—using AI to see traces of ink on segments of virtually unrolled scrolls. Aside from letter detection, the other main challenge associated with reading the scrolls is segmentation—separating the layers and virtually unrolling the scrolls. So far, this process has been highly manual; the Vesuvius Challenge employed three full-time segmenters. In order to ensure that they’d have segmented enough of the scroll for someone to win the grand prize, Friedman bought the team new monitors and computers to boost their productivity. The challenge for 2024 is to automate the segmentation process.

Friedman admits that he has had other tempting offers of new quests to pursue. Over the last year, he says his inbox has been filled with Robinson Crusoe-esque proposals, from people alerting him to lost shipwrecks and ancient cities, undecoded languages, and strange glyphs on the sides of mountains.

But he can’t walk away. He wants to help read all of the 800 scrolls already discovered in the villa. And some archeologists believe there is a main library containing tens of thousands of scrolls, still waiting to be excavated.

To expedite the excavation, Friedman has obtained the mobile number of the Italian civil servant responsible for the villa, whom he has texted, twice. “My hope is that I won't have to go and dig it out myself,” says Friedman. “But if that's what it comes to, I will.”

So I'm a pretty firm believer in the possible Virgil = Guido theory. I think the evidence is pretty legit. But that makes me wonder

....what prevented Dante from simply using Guido as his guide? Like could he not just make Guido a character? I know that this is probably impossible to answer but I wanted to hear your thoughts cuz you hella smart

Celebrating Virgil's birthday with this ask.

So the thing about the overlapping of Virgil and Guido is that it is only partial. Virgil is there as figure of Guido, but also as Virgil himself, and is important in both roles.

Specifically, Virgil as Virgil is fundamental for the story because he's able to symbolize reason enlightened by the divinity, and thus is able to guide Dante. Virgil is the man who wrote the fourth Bucolic, which in the middle ages was thought to be an anticipation of the birth of Christ, and the Aeneid which, recounting the fatality of the birth of the Empire, says, from a christian pov, that the greatness of Rome was willed by God and in the middle ages the greatness of Rome was the greatness of faith and the roman catholic Church, seeing as those territories were governed by the pope (basically they saw it as "the pagan roman empire was necessary for the future of the catholic church, Rome was chosen by God to be his own home", Dante also explains this concept in Paradiso with Justinian, I believe). So Dante saw in Virgil a pagan man (earthly Reason) who inadvertedly understood a part of divine Truth (enlightened by God). This comes in handy when his guide has to literally do that: bring him as close to God as possible. If Virgil were to only represent Guido, I believe Dante would've had to stop in Hell lmao because Guido was only earthly Reason, he could've only guided him amongst the damned who refused God and/or his teachings; it's God's light that allowed Virgil to go through Purgatory, and exactly because he's still Reason after all, he couldn't go through Paradise, because Reason cannot comprehend faith by definition. Of course, Virgil as Virgil has also many other meanings, but this one in particular is why Dante couldn't simply put Guido and why he actively chose Virgil to be by his side. Also, considering how much effort Dante put into turning upside down all fo Guido's words, it would've been strange to have exactly him guiding him towards truth, no? So Dante puts Virgil and Guido, his two most important guides and teachers, one who didn't know God but knew his Truth and one who did know him but refused it, fused together into one being, creating character-Virgil who on the one hand is historical Vergil (be it in a distorted form, but still), on the other is Guido, and neither of them are present in their full form but only in fragments. So character-Virgil, in my humble opinion, is both and neither.

Also, why couldn't he make Guido a character?? well. he is. he's Dante's the Comedy's shadow. Guido was too big to be a momentary character in a Canto, he had to wrap his ghostly form around the whole work, weave and corrode it from the inside. like a spider ahwhahhwhahw I'm so normal about this

[Fluff] {Anime} Uncle! Dante And Teen! Niece Reader Homecoming Part One (Old)

Dante has never been the type of person to like watching over children or teenagers for say, however, he couldn’t deny his young niece since she lost both of her parents. It’s hard to say what happened to her mother, but he found her on the steps of his workplace, taking care of her and raising her as his own. “[Name]! Are you ready to go?” He asked while standing at the bottom of the staircase, having his hands in his pants pockets, hearing footsteps from his niece from upstairs.

“Yes, I’m ready to go.” [Name] came out of her room with a [Favorite Color] dress with a [Second Favorite Color] sweater jacket covering the top of her dress, her silver [Hair Length] looked beautiful due to Lady’s handy work of doing hair. “Thank you, Lady.” The teenager looked at the black-haired female that was behind her, having a smile on her face. “It’s no problem [Nickname].” Lady returned the smile to the teen.

[Name] may be Vergil’s daughter but she sure doesn’t act like him as much, except when she’s playing pool where she becomes calm and collected. Dante took the role of a father figure since Vergil had perished at his hands, along with the fact that [Mother’s Name] was the only person that his brother ever loved, even if his brother was power-hungry and wanted to embrace his demon heritage to become stronger.

It’s unknown how [Mother’s Name] perished but Dante could only guess that she disappeared and couldn’t raise [Name] on her own or there are many other reasons why he’s stuck with his niece, however, he didn’t mind since his niece and a young child named Patty became friend. “You look lovely [Name], ready to hit the joint?” He couldn’t help to grin silly.

Both Dante and [Name] had been chosen to do a job at a school, someone came to the shop early to ask for help with a demon that’s been taking teenagers during homecoming at the said school. This allows Dante to take his niece out for her first hunt, even though Lady and Trish had scolded him for the idea due to [Name] being a seventeen-year-old girl, who doesn’t have experience with demon hunting.

Lady soon joined both Dante and [Name] downstairs, fixing the teenager’s jacket and dress a bit. “Be careful okay?” She asked while looking into [Name]’s [Eye Color] eyes, being the motherly person towards her. “I will Aunt Lady.” The seventeen replied to the older female before her with a smile, before turning her head towards her uncle. “I’m ready to go Uncle.” She couldn’t help but hide the excitement of being on her first demon-hunting job.

Morrison had brought in another customer into Devil May Cry, only earning the attention of bored Dante but being greeted by Patty who was playing pool with [Name] at the time. “What is it this time?” Dante asked as he leaned against his chair with his feet on top of his desk with the photo of his mother, plus a photo of [Name] when she was a child. “During homecoming or prom nights, female students will disappear with a strange boy.” The customer seems like a teacher at the school.

Soon Dante seemed to frown since homecoming and prom were for students that go to school, plus he wasn’t exactly a person for the job. “Sorry, but I never experienced school dances before, along with the fact that I’m too old for school now.” Dante shrugs his shoulders while leaning into his desk to grab a piece of pizza. “Dante, you can be the entrainment and for the student part.” Harrison looked over at [Name], which made her stiffen a bit.

Patty soon looked at her friend who became frozen in her place with her pool stick in her hands still, eyes nearly widening at the idea of being a student that’s going to homecoming for the very first time, or prom for that matter. “Well kiddo, this is your lucky chance to come with me to do demon hunting.” Dante looked over at his frozen niece with a small chuckle, this would be indeed her first time hunting demons.

“Do you mean it?” [Name] questioned her uncle with a clueless face as she blinked her eyes, thinking that she was daydreaming. “Of course, except there’s one problem…” Dante had forgotten about how Trish and Lady would react to the mission and deny it since it could be too dangerous for an inexperienced demon hunter just like [Name], however, the teenager was fitted for the job as a female student.

After the teacher had left with Morrison who had given them the date and time for the school’s homecoming, [Name] became unaware of the danger that the unknown demon disguised itself as a young male student to lure female students away from the safety of the school could do to her if she’s caught unguarded. Snapping out of her thoughts of the door opening due to the bell ringing, noticing both Lady and Trish had come back from their hunting trip.

Surprisingly the two demon hunters have gotten along just fine after their small brawl when they first met, even though Dante had just watched while the whole thing went down prefer. Trish had noticed something on Dante’s desk that looked like a piece of paper, except this was a ticket form. “Going somewhere?” She asked the male demon hunter. “Homecoming.” Dante didn’t exactly explain why or how he got a homecoming ticket.

[Name] soon fixed the [Favorite Color] flat shoes that Lady had given her to match her dress, who couldn’t blame the two demon hunters when their [Nickname] was going on a hunt that could be dangerous for her? “Here Dante, everything is packed in this case.” Trish had given a guitar case to Dante, which holds his sword and twin guns, along with a thin sword for [Name] in case there is a demon in the school.

“Thanks, Trish, we’ll be on our way now. Come on [Name], let’s go to a party.” Dante places a hand on his niece’s shoulder before heading out of the shop, waiting for the seventeen-year-old outside. “Goodbye, Aunt Trish, and Aunt Lady!” [Name] bows her head softly before running out to rejoin her uncle, both females had a plan to follow the two of them just in case something goes wrong.

Both Dante and [Name] made their way to the car that was parked in front of the shop, the older devil hunter walked over to the driver’s side, placing the case in the back as he got in the driver’s seat. Meanwhile, [Name] had gotten into the passenger side, only being careful with the dress that she and her two Aunts had gotten at a mall, while her shoes were comfortable; despite that Lady wanted to get her high heels that matched her dress.

“Let’s rock and roll,” Dante started the car up when his niece closed the door, hearing her let out a small chuckle as the vehicle started. Silence filled the air as the two headed for the high school, which made [Name] anxious has never been around people who were the same age as her. “Don’t be nervous, I’ll be right with you.” Her uncle knew that his niece was anxious and he couldn’t blame her, this was her first time hunting a demon.
