“Dante could pull a half broken refrigerator out of a trash heap and use it as a bear-trap on a chain in minutes.” has me fucKING CACKLING.
Summary:
Vergil looked her in the eye then, the first time since he made his unwanted presence known. There was something in the back of it, a spark of some sort. “Say… Patty,” He was unsure how far he was treading. It was kinda funny how similar he looked to Dante in those first few days of knowing him. “I could offer you a bit of advice on using such a weapon.”
Patty is struggling with her new sword, and Vergil offers his aide. The two end up gaining something by the end of it.

I want a hilarious fic where Nico accidentally calls Vergil some variation of “Dad” but like, it the way some kids accidentally call their teacher “mom”.
Like, she doesn’t actually see him as a father, but she Does see Nero as a brother. With him occasionally pulling the “c’mon dad” line out to get Vergil to do something, she’s picked up mentally referring to him as “dad” sometimes too.
I just think I would be funny (and literally Anyone would be a better dad for her than Agnus. Fuck that jackass. She deserves better)

What do you think would happen if rottmnt (and both the Caseys) met Dante, Vergil, and Nero?
(Assuming Cassandra knows Casey is her future son, I just picture her being like, "Hey, wanna see a cool thing I made?" and then grabbing Casey and holding him up like Simba in the Lion King, being all like, "LOOK AT MY AWESOME SON!! GAZE upon his MAGNIFICENCE!"
Casey, being held up and hiding his embarrassed face behind his hockey mask, awkwardly waving: "Hi." [as an aside to Cassandra] "Mom, please put me down, this is really embarrassing.")
I already preach that Leo would be a DMC fan and would idolize DMC3 Dante, so meeting one of his favorite characters would probably send him into fanboy mode.
Overall I think they'd be shocked to meet people that are more built different™ than they are and I don't think the Sparda's would find the situation that weird considering what they've seen and done. The real kicker would be the boys seeing how insane the family dynamics are between those three, like there's the disaster twins and then there's THE disaster twins. Like what do you mean you tried to kill each other multiple times??? What do you mean y'all stab each other often??? What do you mean you two first met and filled each others with stab wounds AND bullet holes???
They'd also all try to fight Dante cause like cmon guys he may have demon powers but there's four of us plus the Casey's AND we have ninpo (they get their asses handed to them and styled on, Nero just sits and watches while Vergil is sitting and reading).

Oh but see. Apparently this is only a tradition in my hometown, but we have these things called "sparrows" in our high schools. Basically, at the end of senior year, classes will prepare a special performance for prom. This can be a play, a song, anything, really, as long as it's creative, made to represent the class (usually making fun of the teachers) and can be performed at prom.
I feel like that could live on in yumenosaki :3

Another List of Words related to Mythology
to include in your next poem/story
Archē - First principle or origin of things that exist. The Ionian philosophers posited a single element (water, air, fire) as the archē in the belief that everything was reducible to one substance.
Ataraxia - “Without perturbation, calmness.” Describes the Epicurean ideal of happiness: freedom from pain in the body and in the soul.
Cynicism, philosophical - Not a school, but a loosely organized sect. Most famous exponent was Diogenes of Sinope (ca. 400– ca. 325 BCE), who preached that happiness attained by limiting desires to the most basic needs. Ideal of life is attainment of self- sufficiency (autarkeia).
Elysian Fields/ Elysium - Abode of dead heroes and righteous souls. Set in Homer’s Odyssey 4 at the edge of Ocean; in Vergil’s Aeneid 6 it was incorporated into Hades as a separate part. Also equated with the Isles or Isle of the Blest.
Golden Bough - In mythology, a branch with golden leaves needed to gain entrance to the underworld.
Hubris - “Insolence, arrogance.” Used in situations in which a person of humble station insults a superior or, more often, when a mortal commits affrontery against a god.
Nous - “Mind.” Begins and directs the cosmic whirl in the cosmology of Anaxagoras, though not identified with god. For both Plato and Aristotle, the rational part of the soul.
Sophist - Private teachers in Athens in the 5th century BCE. They taught mainly rhetoric and techniques of argument to students preparing for public life; reputed for questioning traditional values, myths, and religious beliefs and for promoting relativism.
Theion, (to) - “The divine”; a quality that belongs to both gods and exceptional mortals.
Theomachia - A battle among the gods.

Can I request... Sparda boys x university student female reader, please? 👩‍🎓
Absolutely! Here you go!
Sparda boys x Fem!University student!Reader headcannons
¤ Dante ¤
-Dante never went to college himself, as he spent his entire youth fighting off demons.
-To make up for it, he visits you every chance he takes and makes you take him on tours throughout the campus.
-Has no idea how to help you with your homework since the last time he had to was around 3 decades ago.
-Tried to spy on you (because he's proud of you) through the window of your classroom and got caught, mistaken for a stalker, and promptly thrown out and banned from campus.
-Now the only time you can see each other is during breaks between semesters when you can go home, but never fear, Dante has a workaround.
-You guys now video call each other all day every day, each of you very reluctant to shut off your phones.
■ Vergil ■
-Vergil was very proud of you for going to college and completing your education.
-He visits you every chance he gets, but unlike Dante, he doesn't make you show him around campus. He just likes spending time with you.
-When you guys walk around together people mistake him for a professor, occasionally running up to him and asking questions related to their studies.
-Vergil makes a good professor, though, and answers them more accurately and clearly than their own teachers.
-Since he's so smart, Vergil will help you with your work, but ONLY as if you're stuck and it's last resort. He doesn't want you using him to cheat.
-Sends you treats and things nearly all the time, along with letters reminding you to eat and drink plenty of water.
□ Nero □
-Nero never cared for college, which is why he never went, but he's proud of you for putting in the effort and studying hard.
-He can't visit as much as he'd like to because of devil hunting, his inability to travel without a vehicle, and your busy schedule, but he takes the time to call and/or text at least 4 times a day.
-When you come back to see him for holidays/break time, he is overjoyed.
-He misses you every day that you're gone, getting increasingly lonelier and lonelier until you return.
-Then when you come back he squishes you up in a bone-crushing hug and just stays there for about half an hour, not wanting to let you go.
-He's tempted to grab onto your leg and keep you from leaving again, but knows better than to actually do it. You're leaving for the sake of your education, you'll be back soon.

Ancient Roman Poets on a Modern Date
Catullus (Gaius Valerius Catullus)
If you meet him before Lesbia, he will be charming, eloquent, and happy to go wherever you like, although his funds could be limited. Even so, he'll make sure you both enjoy yourselves. Theater or concert tickets in the plebian--nosebleed--section, for instance. If you meet him after Lesbia, there is a possibility he will spend the entire time trauma-dumping about his ex. If you also have one to complain about, this could be cathartic.
Vergil (Publius Vergilius Maro)
He takes you out to his beehive dressed in full bee-keeping gear to introduce you to his bees and then goes inside, where you sample different varieties of honey drizzled over fruit. He is sweet, but does talk about fields and bees a lot.
Ovid (Gaius Valerius Catullus)
Let's be honest. This might be more of a Tinder or Grindr hookup than a date. However, it's possible you met at a theater, race track, parade, or seaside resort. If you are aro/ace, run away. If you aren't and you are interested in seeing if he truly is proficient as a teacher of love, stick around. Don't expect him to be faithful, however. And although his manners are perfect, remember that it's an art and a game to him, so guard your heart.
Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus)
He'll take you out for a night of expensive dining and pay for it solely because the friend of a friend that owns the place owes him. He is charming company and can get you into any exclusive club or private experience you want to go to, but will expect reciprocated favors. Also, he turns on the charm, but absolutely expects to be complimented in return.
Sulpicia
She plays hard to get initially, not wanting to be too obvious with her affection. The first date will be YOUR choice. Pick well and she'll follow that with a candlelit dinner and eternal devotion. She does have expensive taste, however, and she would absolutely report you to her scary uncle if you break her heart.
Martial (Marcus Valerius Martialis)
He takes you on a picnic. Despite this being in the country, he'll opt for fine wine and gourmet food. He's easy to talk to, funny, and catty with his gossip. However, he'll also go on about his childhood in the country and how he went hunting and fishing and how he misses the simple country life. (All while sipping from an expensive goblet.)
Livy (Titus Livius)
He takes you to a museum and acts as your tour guide throughout the entire thing. Who knew that your date would double as a living and breathing audio tour? You're supposed to eat at the museum cafe, but you may not make it there before it closes... If you're a fan of history, you're in for a treat.
Iullus Antonius
Iullus is a huge romantic and just as charming as his famous father. He will show up with flowers and take you on a date in a small, undiscovered restaurant and to a lot of cute places that are off the beaten path. Whether you hit it off romantically or not, he's the kind of guy who could be your ride or die. (Spoiler alert, when he says he's your ride or die, he's extremely serious. 💀)
Albius Tibullus
When he falls, he falls hard. He takes you on a date in an orchard. This includes picking grapes and then tasting wines. If the date is before he was entranced with one of the lovers he wrote about, all is well. If not, he might get a little teary eyed about his past love(s). He is polite, sweet, attentive, and apologetic though.
Juvenal (Decimus Junius Juvenalis)
He takes you to an expensive restaurant and makes it clear he is only paying for HIS meal. The entire time he criticizes everyone else in the restaurant for being posers and judges them based upon appearance, status, and gender. His date is not a safe place for anyone who doesn't fit his definition of traditional values. Definitely talks about kids these days and the degradation of society.

Three Students Just Deciphered the First Passages of a 2,000-Year-Old Scroll Burned in Vesuvius’ Eruption
A Roman scroll, partially preserved when it was buried in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79, has been virtually unwrapped and decoded using artificial intelligence.
The feat was achieved by three contestants in the Vesuvius Challenge, a competition launched in March 2023 in which people around the world raced to read the ancient Herculaneum papyri.
Papyrologists working with the Vesuvius Challenge believe the scroll contains “never-before-seen text from antiquity,” and the text in question is a piece of Epicurean philosophy on the subject of pleasure. The winning submission shows ancient Greek letters on a large patch of scroll, and the author seems to be discussing the question: are things that are scarce more pleasurable as a result?
The author, whose identity is unconfirmed, doesn’t think so: “As too in the case of food, we do not right away believe things that are scarce to be absolutely more pleasant than those which are abundant,” one passage from the scroll reads.
The three members of the winning team had previously individually made significant contributions to the competition. Luke Farritor, a computer science student at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Youssef Nader, a machine learning Ph.D. student at Freie University in Berlin, had been two of the first contestants to detect a smaller number of letters, winning $40,000 and $10,000 respectively. Julian Schilliger, a robotics student at ETH Zürich, developed a tool that began to automatically segment the scrolls. They will share the $700,000 grand prize.
Nat Friedman, a tech investor and executive, and one of the challenge’s organizers, recently printed out the winning submission. “All this has been in this dreamlike digital world in my imagination before," Friedman says. "Seeing it on paper, rolling it up, it just made it so tangible.”
There’s a lot more to discover. The scroll partially decoded by the winning submission was one of 800 discovered in a southern Italian villa that was first uncovered in 1750. The combined efforts of the competitors and organizers so far have resulted in around 5% of one scroll being read.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The final scramble to read the scrolls
Since the Vesuvius Challenge launched nearly a year ago, participants had both cooperated and competed, sharing their latest techniques with each other and posting pictures of their progress. But as the race for the grand prize intensified, the Discord, a social media platform where the participants shared information, went dark, says Friedman.
Of the eighteen submissions for the grand prize, most of them were received on the last day of the contest, Dec. 31, and three were sent in the final ten minutes, according to Friedman. Friedman recalls he was at home with his family around Christmas, decorating for the holiday while compulsively refreshing his phone, when the winning submission came in. “I ran into my little office at home and popped it open,” he says. “I was like, ‘Wow, this is really magnificent.’”
In accordance with the criteria set in March 2023, the winning submission contains four passages of 140 characters each, with at least 85% of the characters in each of those passages recoverable by professional papyrologists. It also contains a further 11 columns of text.
It isn’t known who authored the ancient scroll, but experts have developed theories. “Is the author Epicurus' follower, the philosopher and poet Philodemus, the teacher of Vergil? It seems very likely,” writes Richard Janko, professor of classical studies at the University of Michigan. “Is he writing about the effect of music on the hearer, and comparing it to other pleasures like those of food and drink? Quite probably.” Robert Fowler, a professor of Greek at the University of Bristol, also believes the author to be Philodemus. “Like other Epicureans, he valued pleasure above all - but pleasure rightly understood, not mere indulgence,” Fowler writes of the philosopher.
In the final section of the scroll, the author appears to criticize his intellectual adversaries, who “have nothing to say about pleasure, either in general or in particular, when it is a question of definition.”
“I can't help but read it as a 2000 year old blog post, arguing with another poster,” says Friedman. “It's ancient Substack, and people are beefing with each other, and I think that's just amazing.”
Tumblr media
What comes next
The Vesuvius Challenge has issued a new grand prize for 2024 that will allow the AI-enhanced decoding to move at a faster pace.
The competitors largely have been developing algorithms for automatic letter detection—using AI to see traces of ink on segments of virtually unrolled scrolls. Aside from letter detection, the other main challenge associated with reading the scrolls is segmentation—separating the layers and virtually unrolling the scrolls. So far, this process has been highly manual; the Vesuvius Challenge employed three full-time segmenters. In order to ensure that they’d have segmented enough of the scroll for someone to win the grand prize, Friedman bought the team new monitors and computers to boost their productivity. The challenge for 2024 is to automate the segmentation process.
Friedman admits that he has had other tempting offers of new quests to pursue. Over the last year, he says his inbox has been filled with Robinson Crusoe-esque proposals, from people alerting him to lost shipwrecks and ancient cities, undecoded languages, and strange glyphs on the sides of mountains.
But he can’t walk away. He wants to help read all of the 800 scrolls already discovered in the villa. And some archeologists believe there is a main library containing tens of thousands of scrolls, still waiting to be excavated.
To expedite the excavation, Friedman has obtained the mobile number of the Italian civil servant responsible for the villa, whom he has texted, twice. “My hope is that I won't have to go and dig it out myself,” says Friedman. “But if that's what it comes to, I will.”

So I'm a pretty firm believer in the possible Virgil = Guido theory. I think the evidence is pretty legit. But that makes me wonder
....what prevented Dante from simply using Guido as his guide? Like could he not just make Guido a character? I know that this is probably impossible to answer but I wanted to hear your thoughts cuz you hella smart
Celebrating Virgil's birthday with this ask.
So the thing about the overlapping of Virgil and Guido is that it is only partial. Virgil is there as figure of Guido, but also as Virgil himself, and is important in both roles.
Specifically, Virgil as Virgil is fundamental for the story because he's able to symbolize reason enlightened by the divinity, and thus is able to guide Dante. Virgil is the man who wrote the fourth Bucolic, which in the middle ages was thought to be an anticipation of the birth of Christ, and the Aeneid which, recounting the fatality of the birth of the Empire, says, from a christian pov, that the greatness of Rome was willed by God and in the middle ages the greatness of Rome was the greatness of faith and the roman catholic Church, seeing as those territories were governed by the pope (basically they saw it as "the pagan roman empire was necessary for the future of the catholic church, Rome was chosen by God to be his own home", Dante also explains this concept in Paradiso with Justinian, I believe). So Dante saw in Virgil a pagan man (earthly Reason) who inadvertedly understood a part of divine Truth (enlightened by God). This comes in handy when his guide has to literally do that: bring him as close to God as possible. If Virgil were to only represent Guido, I believe Dante would've had to stop in Hell lmao because Guido was only earthly Reason, he could've only guided him amongst the damned who refused God and/or his teachings; it's God's light that allowed Virgil to go through Purgatory, and exactly because he's still Reason after all, he couldn't go through Paradise, because Reason cannot comprehend faith by definition. Of course, Virgil as Virgil has also many other meanings, but this one in particular is why Dante couldn't simply put Guido and why he actively chose Virgil to be by his side. Also, considering how much effort Dante put into turning upside down all fo Guido's words, it would've been strange to have exactly him guiding him towards truth, no? So Dante puts Virgil and Guido, his two most important guides and teachers, one who didn't know God but knew his Truth and one who did know him but refused it, fused together into one being, creating character-Virgil who on the one hand is historical Vergil (be it in a distorted form, but still), on the other is Guido, and neither of them are present in their full form but only in fragments. So character-Virgil, in my humble opinion, is both and neither.
Also, why couldn't he make Guido a character?? well. he is. he's Dante's the Comedy's shadow. Guido was too big to be a momentary character in a Canto, he had to wrap his ghostly form around the whole work, weave and corrode it from the inside. like a spider ahwhahhwhahw I'm so normal about this
I hope this answers your doubts :>

Does anyone have any insight or ideas as to how Vergil learned how to use Yamato? Ideas so far are:
went to Japan and learned
didn't go to Japan, found a kenjutsu teacher somehow
learned from old samurai movies and anime

tw physical abuse, violence, domestic abuse
*spins* I wonder if anybody ever noticed how quickly reboot Dante heals, and used it as an excuse to hurt him more/worse than they would've otherwise dared to when they knew he was going to be seen out in public? Because they know he can just heal up just fine (he's not fine- healing still takes energy, his healing factor still has a LIMIT, but its not like Dante'll ever tell them that, and they more than likely wouldn't care enough to stop if they knew), "so it doesn't matter what I do to him". Like, abusive foster parents, or guards, or teachers, or other people in positions of power. I wonder if Dante ever used that healing factor of his as an excuse to take physical abuse meant for somebody else, even if the victim wasn't someone he knew or they weren't kind to him, just because Dante knows they don't deserve to be treated like that? It still HURTS, but at least he can take it. (Besides, it hurts less than seeing someone else get hurt, and because he thinks he deserves it for being- who he is. Like maybe he thinks there must be something wrong with him for the demons to keep hunting him so doggedly.)
I wonder if he's ever been stabbed or shot on someone else's behalf? I wonder if he's ever killed someone that took the abuse too far, human or not? I wonder if he ever ran away into Limbo, because it made running from the cops easier?
Plus, reboot Dante has more control over his healing factor than preboot Dante seems to, so if reboot Dante needs to lie there and bleed for a bit to satisfy someone's sadism, he can. Very useful trick, that, sometimes. Especially if/when you need to play dead.
Ok so I may have gotten off topic but I'm very interested in the idea of reboot Dante and violence asdfghjk. I love characters and their complicated relationships to violence, it's a whole thing for me.
But yeah in an effort to keep this short my TLDR is: I think that yeah, Dantes been subject to a lot of abuse and his healing abilities could have enabled that abuse to be worse in the right scenario though I think he's very liable to start hitting back. I think he's definitely protected people he cares about with his healing abilities and he's definitely killed abusive people before (something him and Kat have in common). And I think the ability to play dead would be useful for him dfghjkl
In an effort to ramble about reboot Dante and violence, here's more post asdfghj (I'm not putting it under a read more but if anyone wants me to let me know):
I've come under the realization that I tend to categorize reboot Dante as more...violent and volatile then a lot of the fandom. I tend to characterize him like a scary dog in a lot of ways, largely a persona built out of a desire to protect himself and shut other people out. Which is to say I think he grew up in a lot of abusive and dangerous situations and given his unique circumstances he learned to hit back rather quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if Dante were someone's punching bag when he was younger and I wouldn't be surprised if he, given things like his healing abilities and what not, then decided to take this opportunity to punch back.
From what we see of him in game, particularly the late game conversation with Vergil about finding solace and release (the one where Vergil's like 'yeah I channeled all my energy into hacking because I felt like I didn't quite belong and it made me feel better what about you :)' and Dante was like 'yeah no I just slept around a lot and killed lots of demons' which was definitely not what Vergil wanted him to say asdfghjk), I think it's fair to assume Dante gets some sort of not exactly comfort or enjoyment from violence but a sort of like...it's sort of an outlet for his frustrations and emotions. And it's an easy outlet for those emotions.
I think there's also something to it with that one Barbara Kruger piece, this one:
Tumblr media
The piece itself has like a homoerotic tone to it, at least I feel, particularly within the context of when it was made and all. But there's also this idea that like any sort of attention when you are starved from it is good attention. Here it's the idea that like these men want attention from other men but are too scared to receive it in a loving, kind way and so then turn to violence because it is some sort of attention, some sort of contact, with one another.
Which relates to what I want to talk about here, Dante is starved of affection and love which he copes with by both a lot of meaningless sex but also I think there's something to the idea that when you are touch starved, any sort of touch will do after a while. So getting into a physical fight, allowing oneself to engage in that, can give the sort of give a little hit of what he's looking for. Which is that sort of connection with another person, that like 'we're both here we're both alive you're real and I'm real' of a hug except you know, Worse. Like is a fight a kind interaction, no, but you can't really deny the fact you are both here in this moment and you are both alive and real as you drive a fist in a guys face. The idea that any attention is attention, even if it's bad attention.
I also tend to view him with very little care for his own self preservation. A mix of just not caring what happens to him but also that young person invincibility complex that's further enabled by the fact he can heal himself at will. Like he both is aware he can recover from injuries and all, but also fairly sure he's not going to live long, that sort of thing and isn't quite sure how much he cares to. But I definitely can see him, given the big heart he has down there that he likes to pretend he doesn't have, very eagerly playing human shield for people he cares about because he can take it and they can't.
So I think it's very likely he's taken hits on someone else's behalf before lashing out on the abuser/attacker. I don't think he takes abuse well, happening to himself or others.
I'm also very much of mind he has killed people who are not demons before because of the above.
There's also a lot of other angles to look at when it comes to reboot Dante and violence done by him or onto him to but I'm trying to keep this short asdfgh it's just a really interesting subject to me with characters, particularly characters already associated with violence.
