Books I read in July and holy fucking fuck were bangers
"Radio Apocalipse" by Kayleigh Gallagher 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕
Does it deserve this rating? I don't know, but I do know that reading this book made me feel like I'm soothingly stroking hair of my teenage self and at the same time for the most part I needed to take a walk outside to make sure that the world did not actually end. And the author wrote this as a teenager? Have my firstborn child.
"All systems red" by Martha Wells 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕
Have I ever thought that I would see a character that calls itself "murderbot" and think "BABY!"? Yes. There is no motherly bone in my body but be not fooled. Everyone will be babyfied. No one is safe. Lock your favorites away because I will find them and I will spoon-feed them soup. Also, the found family slapped me upside the head in this one and I'm a step away from writing silly little coffee shop AUs. Stay tuned for other books in the series ig

It's been a while since a book made me fear my own mortality and vulnerability to the influence of the people around me, thank you Tara Westover.

Christianity is literally the worst for son preference. This mother says, "[my son] has always protected angels with broken wings." Meanwhile, the aforementioned son is literally torturing (sending her to ride on unbroken horses) and abusing (gaslighting her about a candy bar) and stalking a vulnerable (divorced parents in Mormon community) girl.

Educated by Tara Westover
Stepping into Brigham Young University at the age of seventeen, Tara goes into her first classroom. Growing up with a father who believes he needs to prepare for the end of the world and that public schools are evil, and a mother who makes herbal remedies and midwifes for a living, Tara did not have a stable education as a child. This memoir details her education as a child, her education in university, and learning to unlearn the things she was taught as a girl.
This book was tough, honestly. I found it endlessly fascinating, but there were a lot of portions detailing abuse, and those parts were really tough. I thought this book was fantastic, though. I found Tara's thinking to be intriguing, since her upbringing was so different from my own, and her family seems like they were tough to live with, especially as her world was opening up.
Recommended for: people curious about doomsday preppers, anyone who thinks this book sounds interesting, and people who want to appreciate their own education
Content Warnings: abuse (emotional, physical, and verbal), gore
