Decorative Sunday
The Warli are an indigenous tribe of western India, living in the mountain and coastal areas along the Maharashtra-Gujarat border north Mumbai. Their artistic traditions date back 5000 years, with patterns of circles, triangles, and squares that accrete to form dynamic natural forms like expressive, fluid pictograms. Today, these patterns may be found on the walls and floors of both domestic and community spaces in Warli communities.
In The Deep, a limited-edition, hand-bound book, silkscreen-printed by hand on recycled cotton paper with unique cover marbling, and published in Chennai, India by Tara Books in 2020, the brothers Mayur and Tushar Vayeda adapt the Warli style of their community to present the dynamic relationships between human habitation and the depths of the sea. The text by Arun and Gita Wolf is derived from an oral narrative by the Vayeda brothers.

Hi my name is Don Quixote of La Mancha the Knight of the Rueful Figure and I have a rueful figure (that's how I got my name) with purple bruised ribs and tall stature and gaunt features and hair turning gray and a rather hooked aquiline nose and large black drooping mustaches and a lot of people tell me I look like Amadís of Gaul (AN: if u don’t know who he is begone!). I’m not related to Lady Oriana but I wish I was because she’s an incomparable flowering beauty. I’m a knight errant but some of my teeth and grinders are missing. I have long lank limbs. I’m also a defender of damsels, protector of orphans, succourer of the needy, righter of wrongs, undoer of injustice, and I wander a magic countryside called the mountains of Spain where I’m in my first year of knighthood (I’m forty-nine). I’m a gentleman (in case you couldn’t tell) and I wear mostly armor. I love my great-grandfather's forgotten corner of the house and I cobble together all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a doublet of fine cloth with matching shoes and velvet breeches and a helmet, morion, visor, breastplate and backpiece. I was riding outside La Mancha. It was early morning so the rays of the sun fell obliquely and the heat did not distress me, which I was very happy about. A lot of giants stared at me. I put up my pasteboard visor at them.

who else has ever been personally victimized by season five episode sixteen of buffy the vampire slayer The Body. you know the one. the episode with no non-diegetic music. the episode with the major character death. the episode with the incredibly poorly timed title sequence. the episode that perfectly showcases how different people process grief and develops all its characters to the next level simply by showing us the both the big and little ways they react to this kind of pain. (yknow. buffy with the staying strong for everyone else and blaming herself. xander with the wall punching and quietness but still trying to make jokes. willow with the changing outfits and searching so hard for something she CAN control. anya with the trying so hard to comprehend something she went so long without having to understand. giles with the taking care of everything.) the episode thats one of only two buffy the vampire slayer episodes to be a featured article on wikipedia. the episode that might be the best done piece of television i’ve ever seen. the episode that had me nauseous cause i was crying that hard. you know the one.

Growing up near the Ganga River in the cultural wellspring of Mithilia, Rambharos Jha spent much of his childhood observing the natural world and traditional arts of the region. When his father began working with a government project to breathe life into local art traditions, Rambharos had the opportunity to study Madhubani women painting walls and courtyards in their renowned Mithilia style utilizing natural dyes and pigments to depict people engaging with nature and deities.
Inspired by these encounters, Rambharos began his artistic painting career in line with the traditional motifs of Hindu mythology but has since evolved his practice to better represent his personal experiences and experimental mediums. Waterlife, published in 2012 by Tara Books, is a culmination of Rambharos’s efforts to balance the delicate traditions of Mithilia art with his contemporary ideas. Waterlife is silkscreen-printed by hand on handmade cotton paper and masterfully plays with adding movement and new subjects and environments to the classic Mithilia medium marrying Rambharos’s childhood memories and folk legends.
