✨Meet The Characters - Weisse Rose✨
Martin Hagen
Oh, it all started with him, Marty my beloved 🖤 so a few of his ~important~ character sheet things below, and later I'll list some personality traits/characteristics!
This is the first study I did of him in full color, with decent linework and a ~final~ design!
Age: around late 28
Height: 1.75 (5'7)
Astrological Sign: Chaotic Sagittarius
Languages: Russian, German, English
Heavenly Virtue: Undeniably loyal, wants to see the people he loves happy
Hellish sin: People pleaser, has a hard time saying no and establishing boundaries - is made a mop by most people because of this
Current Occupation: Pâtissier Assistant and sometimes a Chef Assistant at the same high-end Hotel his friend Diana works at
Now, a little list of things I wrote down when first thinking about his character that have remained to this very day which is quite a rare thing tbh
Looks like Diana out of coincidence, but his hair is more pale blond and has tanner skin (compared to hers)
That Billy Idol hairstyle
A good hearted punk :)
There you go, now I'm picturing him as Nero (Devil May Cry)
STING STYLE
Has strong opinions but avoids conflicts
You know, "a gentleman will walk but never run" - will walk away from fights but if the situation calls for it, will fistfight with grace and burning anger (I can't run away from Sting)
Very chill and friendly vibe
But also "don't mess with said vibe or I'll fucking kill you :)"
Noisy. Gets easily evicted - that's how the story begins
Super skilled guitarist but enjoys a more practical, grounded and simple approach
What works, works. He won't argue and he doesn't want to make his life difficult
Just wants to vibe with his music
Connects easily with people
Very friendly and chatty - can and will talk with the first animated object in his line of sight
Heart of gold, must be protected at all costs
Has neglectful parents who never really cared about him
He tried his utmost best to impress them, but it never worked
Hence why he became such a huge people pleaser
And that's it for Marty... For now. We'll get to know him better in the comic ;)
He ended up being that precious little character I got super attached to and didn't even see it coming. These little illustrations were my first try at presenting a character, exploring different angles, poses and how to show personality through simple and subtle things - I still have to get better at drawing the same face in multiple angles, but the best way to learn is by doing it!
Face consistency/likeness is a bitch to be honest, but hey, at least you know all the art here is human made then, not AI hahahahaha

The myth that medieval people only drank beer, ale, or wine to avoid drinking water because it was so polluted is so established that even many serious scholars see no reason to set the record straight; they simply repeat it as if it were undisputed truth. Through the Middle Ages, there are very specific and casual mentions of people drinking water. There is no evidence that they thought of it as unhealthy, except when it appeared to be so. Doctors neither recommended against drinking water in general nor using alcohol to avoid it.
Scholars believe, based on evidence, that people preferred ales or wines because of the taste: water was relatively tasteless in comparison. Yet there are many sources that offer more insight into the consumption of water during this period. Medical texts encourage the drinking of water as long as it came from a running river and was clear. As far back as the 7th-century Byzantine physician Paul of Aegina, wrote "of all things water is of most use in every mode of regimen. It is necessary to know that the best water is devoid of quality as regards taste and smell, is most pleasant to drink, and pure to the sight; and when it passes through the praecordia quickly, one cannot find a better drink."
There are numerous texts on when and how to drink water and when it should be mixed with other drinks. It was said spring water was refreshing and the best kind, apart from rainwater, which was considered the finest type of drinking water. However, a 15th-century Italian physician advised pregnant women against drinking water as it caused them to have girls, and he suggested they drink only wine during pregnancy. Water was also to be avoided during meals as it ‘chilled’ the belly, and apparently that was unfavourable.
Certainly, local leaders knew of the importance of providing water to the population. Leon Battista Alberti, the fifteenth-century architect, gave this reason as to why urban areas needed clean water. "Since a city requires a large amount of water not only for drinking, but also for washing, for gardens, tanners and fullers, and drains, and — this is very important — in case of sudden outbreak of fire, the best should be reserved for drinking, and the remainder distributed according to need."
Similarly, in the thirteenth century, the city of London constructed ‘The Conduit’. Using a system of lead pipes, it brought fresh water from a spring outside the city walls into the middle of London, where people could freely access it at public fountains. There are records pertaining to the maintenance and cleaning of the Conduit, and during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, this system was expanded to other parts of the city.
But the place where water is mentioned the most is in religious texts. Documents relate how saints refrained from drinking anything but water, and handbooks of penance often suggested punishing people for their sins by taking away their finer food and drink, making them drink only water and eat bread.
Bede notes that King Edwin of Northumbria had posts erected near springs and rivers with bronze cups attached to them so travellers could stop and quench their thirst.
While they did not understand the implications, medieval people knew not to drink from marshy areas or stagnant water. Fresh clean drinking water was in abundance and was enjoyed in copious amounts, but much like modern-day people, our ancestors preferred a little something extra. 😜

The Vancouver Canadians were unable to get above the .500 mark for the first time in three years. They fell to 3-4 on the year after a 4-3 loss to the Spokane Indians in 10 innings at Ron Tonkin Field in Hillsboro, Oregon Tuesday. Spokane scored the winning run with a Brenton Doyle sacrifice bunt to Canadians pitcher Hagen Danner and a Michael Toglia sacrifice fly to center field to score Aaron…

Review: Newsies at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres

Chanhassen Dinner Theatres kicks off their 50th year with a show that will put a smile on anyone’s face: Disney’s Newsies. My sister and I watched the movie (1992) countless times growing up, so we were pretty excited when it was turned into a Broadway production and enjoyed the tour that made a stop here last year. What makes it even more special is that the story…

HAYLIGHTS HIGHLIGHTS: 2018 EDITION
1. IDLES - “Danny Nedelko”: Haylights Magazine’s very unofficial ~*~Band of 2018~*~ award goes to none other than IDLES. Don’t be fooled by Joe Talbot’s growling vocals and the brash chaos of their songs—underneath it all, IDLES’ much-needed-in-2018 “positivity punk” (thx for coining this, NME) is centered on ideologies of unity, compassion and tolerance. From the pro-immigration anthem, “Danny Nedelko”, to the giant middle finger to toxic masculinity that’s “Samaritans”, IDLES’ songs are a refreshing return to punk music with a message.
youtube
2. Vundabar - “Acetone”: If we had to describe our idea of a perfect band, we’d say “Vundabar” and leave it at that. This Boston-based three piece truly lives up to their name (meaning wonderful in German), with crunchy, math rock-esque guitar work, smart lyrics and tite af drumming, all grounded by undeniably poppy melodies. Indie dreamboi Brandon Hagen lays it all out on the line on Smell Smoke—the most personal of Vundabar’s 3 LPs—and we just can’t wait for its follow-up.
youtube
3. Amyl and The Sniffers - “Some Mutts Can’t Be Muzzled”: From The Chats to Mini Skirt, Australia’s seemingly mullet-infested punk scene is truly where it’s at, and Amyl and The Sniffers are a standout among standouts. Led by the badass that is Amy Taylor, this band has a knack for knocking out bratty, face-melting tunes like “Some Mutts Can’t Be Muzzled”. Woof woof!
4. Ty Segall - “Every 1’s a Winner”: Ty Segall’s output is often hard to keep up with, but he is forever our Indie King who never disappoints. On his 2018 album, Freedom’s Goblin, his 10th solo record in 10 years, Segall owns Hot Chocolate’s “Every 1’s a Winner” so hard you’ll forget that he didn’t even write it himself. You could cut that thick ass fuzz guitar with a knife.
5. Flasher - “Pressure”: Flasher is one of our favorite music discoveries of 2018. If you told us this song was released 35 years ago, we’d have no reason not to believe it. The entire album, Constant Image, features banger after banger, complete with slick riffs and 80s-style percussive accents.
youtube
6. Post Animal - “Ralphie”: We are absolute hoes for Joe Keery.
7. Grapetooth - “Violent”: It’s difficult to dislike this Chicago duo made up of Twin Peaks guitarist/vocalist Clay Frankel and producer Chris Bailoni (aka Home-sick). “Violent” is a danceable, new wave-inspired cut from this weirdo-pop act’s self-titled debut album released in November via Polyvinyl Records.
8. Tanners - “Holy Water”: We don’t often describe songs as bops here, but this is truly a BOP if we ever heard one. The track is beautifully produced, with Tanners’ reverb-flooded soprano on full display over twinkling synths and a groovy bass tone reminiscent of that on Tame Impala’s 2015 album, Currents.
9. Julia Jacklin - “Head Alone”: We could listen to Julia Jacklin’s sweet voice and intricate lyrics all day long. The slow-building “Head Alone” is a perfect example of her impeccable ability to mix quiet, reflective moments with louder electrified hooks. Based off this song and prior single “Body”, Jacklin’s upcoming album Crushing (due out 2/22) will be well worth the 3+ year wait since 2016′s Don’t Let The Kids Win.

10. Shame - “Lampoon”: It took us a while to come around to Shame, but there’s no denying that “Lampoon” is an absolute mood, lads. “I’m so needy/I’m so greedy/I’m so hungry/Won’t you feed me”…literally us LOL! Plus that post-punk talk-sing thing always sounds better with a British accent.
11. Mitski - “Nobody”: Yes, we know we are very late to the Mitski train, but we’re finally on board and chugging right along. Choo choo, bitches! Be The Cowboy is well-deserving of its many accolades and we still can’t get enough of the disjointed, disco-tinged pop nugget, “Nobody”.
12. Soccer Mommy - “Your Dog”: “Your Dog” is one of Sophie Allison aka Soccer Mommy’s most lyrically-biting tracks, making it one of our favorite indie moments of 2018.
13. Slow Pulp - “Preoccupied”: Simply dreamy. Keep an eye out in 2019 for this Chicago by way of Madison, WI four piece. They’ve been busy following up their Ep2 with a handful of deliciously melodic, slow-burning singles that have us extremely excited for a full-length album.
youtube
14. David Thomas Jones - “In Springtime”: Like Haylights Magazine, some of the most revolutionary ideas were originally intended to be jokes. Adding to this list is "In Springtime” from longtime Noël Wells collaborator, David Thomas Jones. “I was randomly playing the guitar part to what turned into this song,” Jones recently told Substream Magazine. “My producer started singing in falsetto. We thought it was funny in the moment and laid it down.”
15. Japanese Breakfast - “Road Head (Recorded Live at Spotify Studios NYC)”: Finally, we can’t have a year-end list without including in some capacity our Indie Queen Japanese Breakfast. So please enjoy this 2018 live rendition of “Road Head”, which is just as captivating as the recorded version from the 2017 masterpiece Soft Sounds from Another Planet.
There you have it, folks! Go ahead and amp up your indie cred by saving the entire playlist to your Spotify. You’ll thank us later when we probably run into each other at Pitch4k Fest 2k19.

Exciting Competition at the Lucas Oil, NHRA 2018 Winternationals!
Exploding engines, crashes, and a new record kicked off the 2018 NHRA calendar at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California. Early on, Funny Car legend John Force shed the body off of his Peak Auto Chevrolet Camaro, while his daughter and last year’s champion Brittany Force went along for the ride as her Top Fuel car hit both walls and rolled over. She was taken to the hospital and treated for an injured shoulder.

The 11,000hp monsters powering some of these cars, though strong, can have a tough day. This was the case for Kalitta Motorsports driver Doug Kalitta, whose Top Fuel engine erupted into a fireball in the first elimination round of competition. Bo Butner looks to defend his Pro Stock title this season and did so with a win. Taking down teammate Jason Line, Butner ran a 6.549 at 209.62 mph in the final round.
