A short platformer game (1026×800 px)

Incomplete little platformer game about letting go of the old internet, made in the Godot engine, as a group effort. You play as a cursor in the form of a cat and platform through a tactile 2000s website before it collapses as it gradually goes offline.

CatNet3000 is playable and downloadable on itch.io.

We named our group Team Hyppekass as a sort of reference to Tiigrihüpe, which was the initiative that brought computers and internet access to Estonian schools.

Sven Mantsik (@ seitsmes_mnt, me): I did the sprite art, sprite animation, some lore writing, and itch.io page design.

Caroline Pajusaar (@ artsycreaturez) - background art, level design.

Karu Kaljuste (@ libakary) - programming, game design.

Anni Hõ (@ 4nnih6) - audio, game design, writing.

Made in 47 hours during the TalTech GameCamp game jam of March 2024, theme: "Into the Unknown." It got 6th place!! (Out of 28 games.)

This game is still very incomplete with a few things missing and a lot of things not working. It's not really completable.

Tallinn University of Technology's (TalTech) second student satellite, Hämarik (Twilight), has concluded its journey by burning up when entering the Earth's atmosphere.

Having orbited for nearly four years, Hämarik holds the record as Estonia's longest continuously operating satellite.

«The satellite has now completed its celestial journey, the last few estimated flyovers yielded no signal,» said Ivo Müürsepp, senior lecturer at TalTech and the supervisor of the development of Hämarik's communication system. Based on the latest data, Hämarik's altitude had dropped to 250 kilometers.

Hämarik is the second satellite from TalTech to end its mission. Earlier this year, on April 1, the same fate befell TalTech's first student satellite, Koit (Dawn). Such an end awaits all satellites in low Earth orbit.

The satellite, built jointly by TalTech students and AS Datel, reached orbit in the early morning of Sept. 3, 2020. It was first contacted on Nov. 15 of the same year, and since then communication with the satellite has taken place several times a day, in thousands of sessions in total, according to Müürsepp.

The students who participated in the satellite project have since founded several space technology startups: PL Space OÜ, Cubehub OÜ and Falconers OÜ.

In total, several dozen theses were written about Hämarik, both in bachelor's and master's programs. Müürsepp also highlighted the space observation ground station on the roof of TalTech's Mektory building as an outstanding benefit from the project.

Currently, students of TalTech are working with the Estonian Student Satellite Foundation and other Estonian universities on a new student satellite project, SUTS, a satellite for testing strategic innovations. The technical goal of the project, carried out in cooperation with students and private companies, is to develop and build a picosatellite that will test new technologies in orbit. The launch of SUTS is scheduled for 2027-2028. In addition to new satellites, the TalTech Space Center engages in the commercialization of the ground station and provision of support for space-themed study programs.

It didn’t take long for Arthur track the mother down.

“Dead.” He said pointing to his screen of her death certificate. “almost two and a half years ago from an allergic reaction to nuts.”

“So, the boy is an orphan.” Raphaëlle sighed as she leaned up against his desk.

“I have the names of his grandparents in Normandy.”

“I’ll pass it onto the social worker. Email me their contact details.  I’ll get a community officer to go and break the news to them.”

“Right-o.”

“What about Alex’s phone, what did you get off that?”

“Not much.  There’s a call logged from when the boy called emergency but no messages and no calls through the night.  I did find Slack installed on his phone.”

“Which is…?”

“A business messaging app. Alex’s company uses it to communicate internally.”

“Okay, and what did you find?”

“He works for a pharmaceutical company called Taltech as a Regional Sales Director.  A lot of business style stuff but he seemed pretty friendly with a guy called Assim Chaibi who is the IT Director for the company.  And then I found this.”

Arthur handed over the phone to Raphaëlle and she scrolled through some messages from a woman called Sophie Kaplan.  

“Seems like there might have been a bit of thing going on with her.” she commented after reading through the messages.

“It sure does.” Arthur said.

“Nice work, Arthur.  Text me his work address. I think I should pop down, see if I can have a chat with these two.  Meanwhile if you can start digging up what you can on the victim.”

“Will do.”

She grabbed her coat.

“Let Nico know where I am when he gets back from the crime scene.” She said as she hurried out, momentarily debating whether she should swing by to pick up Astrid before deciding against it.  She probably needed the time to get on with her actual job after the morning’s disruption.

Nature-inspired materials can be used in applications ranging from tunneling to space

Optimal materials for cutting tools of tunnel boring machines (TBM) were developed in the recently finished three-year long project "Innovative polycrystalline diamond (PDC) drag bit for soft ground tunnel boring machines" by TalTech materials scientists from the tribology and recycling group.

The history of tunnel boring machines can be traced back to 200 years ago when the first tunnels were built. In general, the materialsof a TBM that are in contact with abrasive particles can be divided into metals, ceramics and materials that combine them, i.e. composites. The composites usually have the highest wear resistance in aggressive environments. "We were trying to improve the wear resistance of materials of moving elements of a TBM and the composites were the right choice for further development," the head of tribology and recycling research group, senior researcher of TalTech School of Engineering, Maksim Antonov explains.

The tests done during the research period were following the main goal—to prolong the lifetime of TBM cutting tools in order to minimize the need for their replacement. The tools made of materials with higher wear resistance can be replaced less frequently.
