Life saving surgery took twelve hours. (cut for triggers as tagged)
Within the first two hours, he flatlined just after they'd fixed his clavicle. Once they got his heart beating again, they waited about half an hour to see how stable his body was. It was determined from the shock of the atmosphere change, the sheer trauma his body faced and severe blood loss was a detriment and his body had felt in a place 'safe enough' to go comfortably (but of course that didn't happen).
Logan's clavicle was missing a small piece of bone, so they used a little metal cylinder that looks like a pipe, hollow on the inside, screwed to the bone on either end to hold it together.
While his body was stabilizing after having come back from the flatline, they slowly cut out dead nerve endings and necrotic tissue, as well as tried to clean off the alien saliva that had done a good deal of preservation of his major organs exposed. They saved samples and handed it off to a team of experts who had overseen Logan's retrieval from the station. (Any scientific findings have never been revealed to the public or private facilities working on his case).
Once his body was deemed stable, they got to work in trying to make a plan of how to stitch him back together. This is what took them so long, for they wanted to ensure he had enough skin in the first place to close him up, but they also wanted to be aware of keeping things comfortable and not having unnecessary pulling or possible tearing once everything was stitched. The first of their experimental procedures took place here, where they used a synthetic version of a skin graft, though it was made of entirely organic materials and fairly well matched to him biologically (by whatever coincidence or not that came to pass).
Closing him up took the longest, they wanted to be careful with each stitch and to ensure nothing was too tight or threatened rejection of the skin graft (which wasn't that big but it helped cover most of his left pectoral). Once he was stitched and covered in medical glue and bandages, they put him in a neck brace to give everything uninterrupted healing time without movement to limit pain and stretching. After that, they gave him a couple blood transfusions to replace what he'd lost and assist his heart in having to not pump so hard.
It was during the first transfusion that he flatlined a second time. They were able to bring him back pretty easily and again waited about a half an hour to continue any more work, monitoring all his vitals which were slowly improving very limitedly to the bare minimum of functioning. It was determined later on that he did not sustain any lasting brain damage from lack of oxygen. They noted these instances in his file, told his parents, but never told him.
Once the surgery was completed, the doctors put him in a medically induced coma for about two weeks in duration. This was done to help him in not waking up, hopefully, in so much pain, and they would be able to monitor whether or not his body would reject the synthetic skin graft while he wouldn't experience the trauma of said rejection. They kept the neck brace on him so any movement would be reduced to not pull or pop the delicate stitches on the underside of his jaw or neck.
When they tried to wake him back up, he did but only stayed barely awake for half an hour: he doesn't remember anything about it. After that, his body put him back to sleep of it's own accord, and he stayed in a natural coma for another two weeks. The doctors explained that his body was protecting him from the worst of the pain in this way by keeping him asleep, and promoting healing in this way. At this time too, when he'd been awake, they began the first of many stem cell transplant treatments since his body did not reject the skin graft. Stem cells would help increase the regeneration rate of new skin cells and they hoped would speed up the process of healing his massive flesh wound, as well as his internal tissue damage restoration.
They kept the neck brace on for an additional month after he woke up and stayed awake, but unfortunately the pain was insurmountable. It was the beginning of his mental decline, even if his body was slowly, very slowly, healing.

had the consult for my gallbladder surgery. the doctor told me i need to "lose 10 - 15 pounds" before they'll perform the surgery on me, and that I would need to wait 2 - 3 months before they would schedule it. i told her i have PCOS which makes it difficult to lose weight. she told me that does happen, and offered to refer me to a bariatric surgeon who is used to bigger bodies who could perform the gallbladder removal instead. i asked her for the referral to them instead
i was very angry at her for this, as 10 - 15 pounds do not make any difference when you are 300 lbs. my weight fluctuates between 280 - 340 lbs depending greatly on what i've eaten, how much i exercise, and so on. this will also vary greatly depending on if the stone is blocking my gallbladder completely or partially- if it's fully blocking the neck of my gallbladder, i cannot get enough digestive juices into my stomach to properly digest my food, so i will begin violently vomiting to get the undigested food out, and to get bile flowing into my stomach again. i begin to lose tons of weight when this happens, and i put it back on during the periods where i can get enough bile in my stomach to properly digest my food.
i can't digest my food properly. eating "healthier" will not change this- i can't digest food at all, period. healthy or unhealthy, i can't digest anything, because a good half of my digestive juices are completely missing from my guts. there is a functional issue with the way my guts work, of course i will lose weight drastically and put it back on at times. of course the issues will be episodic.
both her and the student that was working with me kept assuming that i said that my pain got worse after "high fat" meals. both of them put this in my mouth-
the student did it first. she asked when the pain gets worse and i said sporadically, but sometimes after i eat. she literally asked me "so you said it gets worse after fatty meals, right?"
i got frustrated and said "no, it's really random." i didn't get to tell her that raw leafy vegetables and lightly steamed or cooked vegetables make me vomit. broccoli and cauliflower that aren't heavily cooked, salads, raw vegetables, lightly cooked carrots, applesauce and apples in general are all problem foods.
the doctor then came in and said "it gets worse after high fat meals, right? you said that" and i went, again, "no it just kinda happens."
i don't even eat a high fat diet. i cook at home now for every meal now that i have all the tools i need to do so. i make rice, fish, pasta, and certain vegetables that i can digest like potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, mushrooms, and so on. i eat bread, seeds, nuts, dried fruits, and drink oatmilk. i don't eat land meats, eggs, or dairy. i don't have any of those things. i do eat french fries and fish sticks, but not for every single meal. i don't eat chips because they're too salty and irritate my stomach. i don't eat candy or sweets unless the food bank delivers them to me. i don't eat much sugar other than pancakes and certain fruits
she wouldn't listen to me and went "well when you eat fatty meals, your gallbladder has to contract more and it can cause you a lot of pain." you would not believe how many times she came back to "you need to eat a lower fat diet." "the pain gets worse after you eat a high fat meal, so eat lower fat meals and your pain will go down." "just eat a lower fat diet and it'll help."
i just kind of sighed. there were tears in my eyes. i felt defeated. they made a bunch of assumptions just because i was sitting there, being fat. i was wearing long sleeves due to it being cold and they didn't get to see that i have a lot of muscle in my body mass. quite a lot. i wanted to tell them that i'm on testosterone and physically active when and where possible, and that i frequently lift heavy objects and move, but i never got a chance. i wanted to tell them my BMI isn't what they think it is, but i just didn't bother to try
i despise that people assume that fat people are fat because they eat "unhealthy" foods. i ate high fat foods for a few months while i was homeless because i didn't have the resources to cook every single meal. it affected my liver, i'm dealing with some fatty liver. but my gallbladder has more important issues in the form of the literal stone inside. she would not stop pushing for me to eat lower fat meals. all because i was sitting there, existing, as a fat person. i wish i would've told her i can only eat fish and plant matter
i don't understand how a patient telling you they're vomiting and can't keep down certain foods does not sound like a more pressing issue than an arbitrary number. weight as a number means nothing, it tells you nothing about that person's actual body composition. i have trauma with vomiting and yet i'm going to have to keep doing it anyway despite the fact that it could kill me via dehydration or if i just. can't stop
either way i'm very unhappy with result as i already waited for a month for this consult. now i have to wait for a referral for another surgeon to go through, and to do the consult with them, too. all while being in pain and having GI issues the entire time. just because a surgeon doesn't want to take the time to learn how to operate on fat bodies. i'm tired. what a joke

I Carry You With Me
I knew going into my surgery that cadaver bone would be used to help support the shifts in my upper jaw. In fact, I surprised my surgeon’s office when we first discussed it.
"We’ll be doing a bone graft on the upper jaw." "Oh, where are you grafting it from?" "Oh, we won’t be using your bone." "Ah, dead tissue. Got it." "You really did do your research!"
13 days ago, I underwent the procedure. The plastic splint on my upper palate will come out in another five weeks or so. But the bone up there? That is now a part of me.
And now that it is in me, I realize I am carrying someone else with me for the rest of my life, someone who chose to donate pieces of themself to help others live. I will have a more fulfilled and healthier life because of them.
I will never know their name or their life story. Did they have children? How old were they when they died? Were they loved?
I don’t know if they chased their dreams, or if they were too afraid. Did they love to watch sunrises and sunsets, too? Or did we have absolutely nothing in common?
And now this selfless person who chose to be an organ and tissue donor has given me a better quality of life—one I would not have without them.
I will carry them with me the rest of my life. And I will hold gratitude in my heart for them, too.
And, yes, I am an organ donor! Maybe someday some part of me will help someone else. And that is a true gift.

💚 - A memory that makes them feel guilty
(Context)
12/20/1949
Loading memory...
Loaded!
He had just gotten his new job as a doctor at a medical centre in the state of Georgia. Freshly 26 as of the 16th of the month and he has gotten the job he's always wanted after years of studying. It was his first day and he wanted to make sure that he was on his best performance. He was doing a heart transplant on a patient when he accidentally poked the replacement heart deep with his scalpel while cutting the connectors to fit the patient. He panicked and just covered the heart in duct tape that he had on his person at the time. He was afraid that he messed up, but even with what he did, the patient managed to survive and live on fine for a few years before death. He always felt that he should of just gotten a new heart, but he didn't and that was the start of his guilt complex.
End memory.

I'm sorry, but I just don't think jokes about lobotomies are funny. I don't think the deliberate physical destruction of millions of mentally ill and mentally disabled people's brains, often without consent, frequently just to make them easier to manhandle, is a laughing matter. I think it's a humanitarian tragedy

Aww, You Do Care
Pairing: Loki x female reader (Y/N)
Summary: You are an analyst for SHIELD and you are going for a simple surgical procedure. All of the Avengers wish you luck and Loki does his best to pretend he doesn't care.
Warnings: Loki being a little annoying but that's expected, mentions of a surgery happening but it isn't described and I skip from the day before to the day after so the surgery isn't shown at all
A/N: This is 100% self indulgent lol I'm actually going for this same surgery in the middle of August so I wanted to write how the team would respond to what was happening.
You close your laptop when the meeting ends and stand up, pushing in your chair. Loki stays seated in the chair next to you, finalizing his notes and Steve walks over to you from the other side of the table.
The super soldier pulls you into a tight hug and says, "Good luck tomorrow, Y/N."
"Thanks," you reply with a smile when he lets you go.
"My turn," Natasha says, pushing him aside. She hugs you tightly, "Good luck. Text me if you need anything."
"I will," you promise. "One of my friends is coming to stay with me for a few days so I should be okay."
Thor hugs you from behind, almost picking you up off the floor, "I hope everything goes well."
"Thanks," you laugh when he releases you.
Loki gets up, "Do you mind?"
He motions towards the door and you move out his way without saying anything to the God of Mischief. Tony rolls his eyes behind Loki's back then gives you a hug as well.
Loki stands with his hands in his pockets as he waits for the elevator and you join him silently.
"Why was the team so insistent on wishing you luck?" Loki asks without looking at you.
"I'm having an operation tomorrow," you answer.
"An operation?" Loki asks, his voice holds no emotion but you see a hint of worry in his eyes when he looks at you.
"It's not a big deal. I didn't bother to tell you cause I figured you wouldn't care," you shrug.
"I do not," he agrees and the doors open. "Out curiosity, not concern," he clarifies and you smile to yourself, looking down, "What type of surgery?"
You follow him into the elevator, "They are operating on my sinuses." You touch your cheeks then the bridge of your nose to indicate where the procedure will be performed.
"Why?" he asks, still trying to act as if he is unconcerned and merely curious.
You sigh, "You know how annoying you think it is when I can't stop sniffling or sneezing?"
"Yes," he nods. "It is quite irritating that you cannot breath silently and constantly sound as if you are unwell."
You roll your eyes but that was pretty much the response you expected from the younger prince. "Well it turns out there a reason I'm always kinda sick. There's something wrong with my sinuses so my doctor is going to remove the infected tissue and then reshape my sinus cavities so they work better," you tell him with a little description as possible.
"Oh," he nods, his eyes meet yours for a moment then he looks back at the elevator buttons.
"So, I'll need to find a new way to bother you since simply trying to breath won't do it anymore," you joke.
He chuckles, "I have no doubt you will find a way. You are one of the more tiresome Midgardians I have met."
"Hurtful," you tell him sarcastically when the doors open on his floor. "Try not to miss me too much. I'll be back in a few days," you wave when he steps out.
Just before the doors close fully Loki says, "Good luck, Y/N."
You stand alone in the elevator wondering if you had heard him correctly.
The day after the surgery, you lay in bed reading when your friend knocks on the open door to your bedroom. "You have a visitor," she says, pointing down the hall. "Feel like seeing anyone?"
You look at her a bit confused, a few of your friends were stopping by tomorrow afternoon but no one had texted about coming over today. "Umm, sure. Who is it?" you ask.
She shakes her head, "You wouldn't believe me if I told you."
"Oh... that's- okay. Yeah, you can let them in," you tell her hesitantly.
"Hello," Loki says when he walks into your bedroom a moment later.
You look at him, too stunned to respond as you sit up more in bed. You adjust your sheets and put the bookmark back in your book before setting it next to you.
"How are you feeling?" he asks, his eyes showing a hint of concern as he observes your post surgery face.
"You remember that time the hulk slammed you into concrete a bunch of times?" you ask him.
He nods, "Vividly, yes."
"Kinda like that expect face first," you point to the bruises covering your cheeks and bandages supporting your nose.
"Well..." Loki smirks, "You do look as if that is what happened."
"No, I wanted to bring you this," he conjures a small potted plant and you look at it in surprise. He puts it on your nightstand and says, "I heard it was customary to bring flowers when someone is in the hospital but you have said before that most flowers aggravate your allergies so that did not seem like a suitable option. I know you have several plants similar to this one in your office so I thought you might like it."
You laugh but stop yourself quickly, the muscles in your face are still incredibly sore. "That was mean," you tell him, touching your cheek lightly. "Did you just come here to tell me I look awful?" you ask in a joking tone.
"Wow," you say quietly, touching the green leaves gently. You look up at him and smile even though it hurts, "Aww Loki, you big softy, you do care."
"Do not tell anyone," he says seriously then he returns the smile, "But of course I care."
I hope you liked this!! Please like, share and comment if you did 💚💚 Please let me know if you want to be added to my taglist!
