as a CSA survivor I honestly think that the number one way to prevent child abuse is to surround kids with adults who treat them with respect. partially because it means there are people for kids to turn to in times of crisis. but also it makes kids way less vulnerable to the magnetism of “wow this adult is the first person to treat me as a human being. better do whatever I can to keep their respect”

I mean one of the features of rape culture is that sex is treated as a kind of trump card. as in. the moment 'sex' is added to the equation, an act is seen as a sex act, regardless of what else is going on

'sexual violence' is seen as sex + violence, where 'sex' comes first and 'violence' comes second. 'sexual harassment' is seen as sex + harassment, where 'sex' comes first and 'harassment' comes second. even in my own context, of being a survivor of CSA, there is framing of this as a deviant sex act on the part of my abuser rather than as an act of abuse and an exertion of power. none of these are examples of sex acts, they are examples of abuses of power

other people have talked about this before, but it's important that we stop seeing sex as a special kind of activity that overrides all other components of what is going on. this kind of thinking prevents us from being able to meaningfully understand (and therefore prevent) sexual violence in all its forms
