Crispy Chicken Tacos with Avocado Tomatillo Sauce

Harvests from last week!

- Queen of Malinalco tomatillo! These are weird elongated tomatillos that ripen to a bright yellow and are sweeter than your typical tomatillo cultivar. I also notice that they’re less likely to have the gross sweaty musky smell a lot of tomatillos have when they get too ripe. They also come in fun shapes! The first one looked like soft serve ice cream.

- Jaltomata repandidentata, another nightshade, and one that’s supposedly perennial in our climate. The flavor is sort of like a milder blueberry or huckleberry, which I wasn’t expecting at all from a nightshade. They don’t have the nightshade musk some fruit have at all. They’re not super sweet so they’d probably be good as jamming berries. Though I’ve eaten some that were sweeter than the prepackaged strawberries sold in Safeway!

Did a bunch of work with the tomatillos today. The biggest cause of damage so far has been the squirrels - they climb around and snap branches as they pull off fruits to eat.

I heavily pruned sick, dead or dying branches (one plant is basically dead already). Added another tomato cage and tied more branches to the supports. Added granular fertilizer and compost. Added a layer of bird netting to slow or discourage the squirrels; they might chew through the net, but it gives us more time to chase them off.

I also took some cuttings inside in hopes of rooting into new plants. Hopefully, the extra support, airflow, nutrients, and netting will give it enough boost to bounce back. Michael’s really hoping for a good harvest and lots of sauce.

Authentic Pozole Verde de Pollo

Some of the first seedlings to emerge. Tomatillos, wallflowers, brussel sprouts, and lemongrass.

The wallflowers are a bit too leggy coz they spent their first few days in a dark corner so I decided to replant them. I saw some dude on Youtube replanting plants in this early stage and I’m really curious on how they’re going to turn out.

Homemade Salsa Verde! 😋

I have started my tomatoes and tomatillo seeds. Aside from the purple bumblebee cherry tomato these are all varieties I have not tried growing before.

My preferred starting for tomatoes is peat pucks. I find they do better than in plastic or compostable pots.
