Harvests from last week!
- Queen of Malinalco tomatillo! These are weird elongated tomatillos that ripen to a bright yellow and are sweeter than your typical tomatillo cultivar. I also notice that they’re less likely to have the gross sweaty musky smell a lot of tomatillos have when they get too ripe. They also come in fun shapes! The first one looked like soft serve ice cream.
- Jaltomata repandidentata, another nightshade, and one that’s supposedly perennial in our climate. The flavor is sort of like a milder blueberry or huckleberry, which I wasn’t expecting at all from a nightshade. They don’t have the nightshade musk some fruit have at all. They’re not super sweet so they’d probably be good as jamming berries. Though I’ve eaten some that were sweeter than the prepackaged strawberries sold in Safeway!

Jaltomata Repandidentata, and Jaltomata Tlaxcala seeds! They're So Tiny!
Planted 4 of each, today, August 14th, 2022.
They have sweet edible fruit, and in the case of Repandidentata, the young leaves are boiled and eaten as a pot herb, which sounds similar to how Solanum Macrocarpon is used.
[ID: three images, all three showing tiny blackish brown seeds sitting in white lids from canning jars , with a finger placed next to them for scale, showing how small they are. The first picture is of Jaltomata Repandidentata seeds, which are about the size of basil seeds. The second is of Jaltomata Repandidentata, which are about the size of Groundcherry seeds, and the last shows one of each seed side by side for comparison. End ID ]

Genome sequence of Jaltomata addresses rapid reproductive trait evolution and enhances comparative genomics in the hyper-diverse Solanaceae
Within the economically important plant family Solanaceae, Jaltomata is a rapidly evolving genus that has extensive diversity in flower size and shape, as well as fruit and nectar color, among its ~80 species. Here we report a whole-genome sequencing, assembly, and annotation, of one representative species (Jaltomata sinuosa) from this genus. Combining PacBio long-reads (25X) and Illumina short-reads (148X) achieved an assembly of approximately 1.45 Gb, spanning ~96% of the estimated genome. 96% of curated single-copy orthologs in plants were detected in the assembly, supporting a high level of completeness of the genome. Similar to other Solanaceous species, repetitive elements made up a large fraction (~80%) of the genome, with the most recently active element, Gypsy, expanding across the genome in the last 1-2 million years. Computational gene prediction, in conjunction with a merged transcriptomic dataset from 11 tissues, identified 34725 protein-coding genes. Comparative phylogenetic analyses with six other sequenced Solanaceae species determined that Jaltomata is most likely sister to Solanum, although a large fraction of gene tress supported a conflicting bipartition consistent with substantial introgression between Jaltomata and Capsicum after these species split. We also identified gene family dynamics specific to Jaltomata, including expansion of gene families potentially involved in novel reproductive trait development, and loss of gene families that accompanied the loss of self-incompatibility. This high-quality genome will facilitate studies of phenotypic diversification in this rapidly radiating group, and provide a new point of comparison for broader analyses of genomic evolution across the Solanaceae. http://dlvr.it/QVhpzr

First sungold tomatoes of the season!! This is the sweetest cultivar of tomato I’ve ever eaten.
I’m also got some ripe Jaltomata fruits! (J. repandidentata) They taste like mild huckleberries and would probably be good sweetened and jammed.
Not pictured but I also finally tasted fruit from Solanum opacum, which is an Australian nightshade. It weirdly tasted like a mellow cantaloupe, which I was not expecting at all from a nightshade.

Berry harvest!!!!!
Also fun fact, gourd family members like the Cucamelon are also berries! They’re a specialized kind of berry called a ‘pepo’ which I think is very cute. (Iirc a pepo is a berry with a harder rind.)
(The other fruits are Jaltomatas and Sungold tomatoes.)

Finally got this one to flower! This is Jaltomata herrerae(200 days), another uncommon nightshade outside of its home range in southern Turtle Island.
It’s a pastel goth nightshade with blood red nectar! I originally got it for the fruits but it might be too late in the season and I’m not sure if it’s self compatible since it’s my only surviving one. It had buds earlier but it kept dropping them for some reason. I’m not sure whether it’s due to day length, temperature, or it was just unhappy before.

Assorted baby plants!
Avocado
Butterworts propagated from leaves
Bukiniczia cabulica
Jaltomata herrerae
I've never gotten avocados to work before despite being a common science experiment. The toothpick method always fails for me so I simulated giant sloth dung (their original seed distributor) using some moistened paper towels and set it in a bag near my router.

As someone who was into aroids over the pandemic can you tell me some about nightshades? I havent really heard about them much.
Yeah!! They’re a pretty diverse group of plants so there’s not too much I have say about them as blanket statement, but despite the reputation of the name, a lot of edible stuff comes from that family as well besides just tomatoes, potatoes, etc. Jaltomata is another genus with edible members in it for example. Lots of very regional foods.
Most of them aren’t too good as houseplants unless you have a lot of space unless you’re willing to prune a lot, or unless you’re like me and can’t help but want to try growing them indoors. :P (Though certain peppers will stay compact easily.)
In my experience they also aren’t horribly hard to grow like some plants. Tomatoes can be fussy or hit-and-miss and sometimes it takes a bit of trying to get seedlings that don’t stall on you but if you can get one established they end up pretty sturdy and like temperatures that humans like as well. In my experience a lot of the ones I’ve tried have had pretty good germination rates as well!
Here is their wiki page for more info and browsing!
