Trollhunters: “the book” versus “the books”

The Book

Trollhunters, a standalone horror-suspense novel by Daniel Krauss and Guillermo del Toro. It inspired the animated series produced by Dreamworks. 

This is the story people are usually referring to in Trollhunters fanfiction when they say they got an idea from the novel, or, the original novel. 

A general and spoiler-tastic summary: 

In San Bernardino, California, Jim Sturges Junior and his best friend Tobias ‘Tub’ Dershowitz discover trolls are real, and that Jim’s dad had legit reason for his paranoia because James Senior’s older brother Jack really had gotten stolen by monsters when they were kids. Jack works with the trolls, fighting Gunmar alongside Johanna M. ARRRGH!!! and Blinky, and has not aged since disappearing. 

Now they’re recruiting Jim because being a Trollhunter is a matter of genetic predisposition - the amulet is solely a translation device - and it looks like Gunmar’s going to escape from where Jack imprisoned him and they’re going to have to actually kill Gunmar this time, so they need all hands on deck. 

Jim’s crush, Claire Fontaine, is one of several kids who go missing in the next few weeks. Those kids are luckily rescued before they can be eaten, and it turns out Claire has the same genetic predisposition for Trollhunting. 

Gunmar spawns many unnamed babies on the football field during his attack on the surface. Jim’s dad acts as a cavalry in that scene, mowing them down with a landscaping vehicle. Steve Jorgensen-Warner, the school bully, is exposed as a Changeling when forced to touch a football helmet for the rival team, who use a horseshoe logo. We never do learn exactly what was up with Professor Lempke, but he was involved in the rebuilding of Killaheed Bridge (respelled as Killahead in the show) and implied to also be a Changeling. 

The Books 

Dreamworks Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia, a series of six novels by Richard Ashley Hamilton written as supplementary material to the animated series. 

These are the stories people are usually referring to in Trollhunters fanfiction when they say they got an idea from the novels, plural. 

A general and spoiler-tastic summary: 

The Adventure Begins: overlaps the first couple of episodes, Jim discovering the Amulet and becoming the Trollhunter. Also has some bonus scenes, like Kanjigar pleading with the Amulet not to pick Draal as Kanjigar falls to his death, and Jim’s knife-spinning trick being to dry the blade after cleaning it, and Barbara meeting Claire and Claire revealing Jim got the part of Romeo but learning Barbara didn’t know he was auditioning and Barbara promising to act surprised when Jim tells her. 

Welcome to the Darklands: in the start of the gap between Seasons 1 and 2, showing what the kids told Barbara had happened to her house, how they got the Glamour Mask, what Jim’s first few days in the Darklands were like and some interesting characters he met there, and why Nomura ended up in Gunmar’s dungeon. 

The Book of Ga-Huel: some time in mid-Season 2, a Changeling polymorph tries to assassinate the main characters and Blinky has to thwart a prophecy that implies he will die. Uhl is allergic to iron and thus mistaken for said Changeling. 

Age of the Amulet: early Season 3, a broken Kairosect results in Jim, Blinky, AAARRRGGHH, Toby, and Claire getting sent back in time and fighting a Trollhunter who cracked under the pressure of the job and joined Gunmar. In the present, Vendel’s grandfather has been brought forward in time and wants to eat humans, and Eli attacks Gunmar while under the influence of a grit-shaka. (Previously misremembered in this post as Gravesand - thank you @goodfish-bowl for the correction.)

The Way of the Wizard: Merlin, despite supposedly having almost no power, tampers with the Shadow Staff so they can’t portal from his tomb back to Arcadia, and the cast meets Draal’s mom while walking home, but Draal’s body gets exploded (possibly to justify why he can’t be revived with the Creeper’s Sun antidote they used on AAARRRGGHH) and his soul ends up in the Void. Somehow this is supposed to show Merlin being nice? Porgon the Trickster, who appears in 3Below, is also in this novel. 

Angor Reborn: Jim turning into a troll was a gradual process after the bathtub teleported him to a lake in the forest. During this, he meets troll versions of Romeo and Juliet, befriends a wolf cub, considers running away to live in the wilderness because he can’t fit in among humans anymore, and fights Angor Rot. Meanwhile, Barbara yanks Merlin around by the beard searching for Jim. 

The Other Books 

Yes, there’s more. There were a few “bonus content” books released. These are less likely to be referred to by writers, but handy for artists. 

Jim Lake Jr.’s Survival Guide: A journal written by Jim about the events of Season 1, added to here and there by other characters. (Unlike most of the Tales of Arcadia spin-off books, this one is credited to Cala Spinner instead of Richard Ashley Hamilton.) 

A Brief Recapitulation of Troll Lore: Volume 48: A glossy book with screenshots and descriptions of key moments and artifacts in Trollhunters Season 1. Has a framing device implying it was somehow put together in the, what, twelve hours?, between Strickler leaving Arcadia and Jim going into the Darklands. There are a few pull-out pages. 

The Art of Trollhunters: A coffee table book with production notes and concept art from the show’s development. This one goes all the way through Season 3.

The Comics 

You know, while we’re here. The comics disconnect from what was established in the show in jarring ways sometimes (like Draal joining Kanjigar on Trollhunting missions in the comics, when the show says their relationship suffered because Kanjigar started avoiding Draal after being called as Trollhunter), but they’ve got some fun ideas in them. 

The comics were written before Wizards aired and do not share a continuity. In the comics, there were Trollhunters before Deya, Deya herself was Trollhunter for at least a hundred years before the Battle of Killahead took place, and Kanjigar was Deya’s immediate successor. 

These, obviously, are the stories people are usually referring to in Trollhunters fanfiction when they say they got an idea from the comics. 

The Secret History of Trollkind: Blinky tells Jim, Toby, and Claire about the Battle of Killahead Bridge, the trolls’ decision to leave Europe for the Americas, Deya the Deliverer’s death, Kanjigar’s first few centuries as a Trollhunter, with sidenotes about Blinky and AAARRRGGHH’s slow journey from enemies to acquaintances to friends. 

The Felled: After the events of ‘Hero With A Thousand Faces’, Jim returns the Aspectus Stone to Vendel, who tells Jim and Toby some stories about various past Trollhunters: Spar the Spiteful (who met an Akiridion, which I was expecting to come up in 3Below but did not), Maddrux the Many, Araknak the Agile (mentioned here as being one of Blinky’s ancestors), Unkar the Unfortunate, Deya the Deliverer (on a quest to punch Merlin in the face), and Kanjigar the Courageous. Jim then goes to fight goblins with Claire.

... but, as always, there will be twists, and bumps, and all... 

PS. I still don’t believe or understand THIS OPTION was never thought of by Happy...and Toby. This was always the best idea, and most logical option. To have this never mentioned before... I will never get it... The 307 end scene lines from Toby & the 416 end scene with Walt/Ralph...were not really mentions of this option or actual “intros”  to this coming plot... 

Quintis is the best written duo and characters on this show, but even here... some decisions are...not good. Not setting up the plots properly, just going through every “bump” (different “family”option plots) one by one.. without any real repercussions and with no real focus on any of them.... that’s choosing quantity over quality... and that’s in network TV standards...

Meaning choosing certain tropes ... is not good TV writing. If you wanna do an emotional plot, and have it be part  of characters EQ development, and story, then do it properly... not to tick off things from “plots we wanna write” list just to add more drama/bumps on the road just to use every idea. My biggest wish for S5 is thatthey focus on less plots and more focus on each- quantity over quality. and... meeting the Quintis kid... for Christmas... 

I don’t want to  think of the Quintis family plot this way, but I do... it seems as if the writers are just trying to cross every option off the list, and since screen time is limited, no time to focus on any of the “items on the list”. But I’m the quality over quality kinda gal, so...

My Take-Aways: Scorpion Season 4 Finale (4x22)

So I’ve written a play-by-play, my interpretation of the Season 4 finale (because that is what we will be calling it, dammit, nothing else).

Before we dive in…ahem…we hold these Scorpion truths to be self-evident:

That this show ends, whenever it ends, with Walter and Paige together. That has been the point from the moment he walked into that diner, and they reiterated that in the S4 Christmas ep.

That the show is called Scorpion, not Centipedes.

That none of our heroes are evil, but that the writers do like to portray them as flawed (and personally, I like that).

That the writers use the characters to talk directly to us and give us clues and reminders.

“Love can be misspelled and messy, but it still works, it just needs to be given a chance.”

Opening Scenes at the Garage

Despite the fun, a lot of really important front-end loading happens in these scenes. Of course, the Quintis development is teed up, but so is the Waige development.

I’ve been baffled that anyone feels like the gang is not supportive or doing right by Walter. Happy clearly explains her motivations…I am pushing you to come clean Walter, to protect my Scorpion family. Toby clearly explains that no matter how innocent the moment was, Walter’s hiding will make it look suspicious…like a perfectly innocent pebble in a box Toby hides. 

I think the writers did a good job here of laying out for the viewers exactly where Toby and Happy’s mindsets were, as well as why Paige will eventually become perturbed. The one thing I wish had happened at some point during Happy’s multiple reminders was that she had evoked the secret marriage. Some kind of “Remember?” or “I know of which I speak” comment. But that’s a minor quibble.

We also see one last check-in from Sylvester about Walter, in which he curtly assures Sly that Flo is nothing but a friend. Once gain, keying up the Sly/Walter development to come.

Guest Stars Aren’t There for Nothing

Anybody notice how we literally didn’t need Alex there for anything? Homeland could just as easily have sent them on that case, and the team could have worked it on their own. No, Alex is there to remind the audience what we know (and the writers know) of Scorpion’s baseline. He’s bringing up old cases, group dynamics…a reminder that the show runners remember what this show used to be, and they won’t forget.

Cala also serves another important purpose. Not only do we get to see an amazing picture of Toby being a mentor and father figure…he shows a remarkable ability to be self sacrificing when he takes the rap for Cala when the police show up. He’s ready now. He’s a dad. But it also shows Happy a picture of what could have been for her…if only. And serves as the all important catalyst to bring her to the course of action she proposes at the end of the ep.

Remember, the Writers Use Characters to Talk to Us

A few examples…

At the end of White Out, Happy’s dad tells her she’s ready for love, she just has to let herself be Happy. Next thing we know, Quintis is canon. By the way, this is also the scene we see the Quinn home movie, labeled “Baby Coming!” A similar hint. Now that’s a slow play.

Collins is a favorite of the writers to be used to tell the future. He foretold the ending of the ep in “Toby or Not Toby” and then put the twist on it to make Toby, and the audience, think that he was just playing mind games. He did it again in 4x01-02…with this insistence that Walter and Paige are fundamentally different and therefore mismatched. We have been watching that eat at the back of their minds all season, and sure enough, for the moment, it seems he was right. I’ve been baffled by theories that the awkwardness in Waige this season was due to personal conflict with the actors or bad writing…these people are professionals. This was intentional from the gate.

Way to Grow, Sly

Cabe makes the comment that Sly is enough on his own, and that’s the final nudge Sylvester needed to install all this growing he’s been doing the last two seasons. He’s not the guy who needs Walter because he’s afraid of his own shadow anymore, and he's not just good as part of the team. He’s good all on his own. That plays into what happens when they get back home. And when Walter lashes out in the last scene, Sylvester stands up to him and does something I never thought we’d see. He quit. Everything came to fruition and he believed in himself more than he believed in Walter, for the very first time. His hero has fallen. More on this later.

Thank God I’m a Quintis Shipper

Remember when I said they use the characters to tell us things? Go back and rewatch Toby’s speech from 3x07 by the crib. His wording there was unusual, and the blocking was meant to make the moment very intense and attention-getting. I’ve thought from the moment I saw it that it was a promise to the fandom of two things…#1, Happy will be a mom…and #2, no guarantees on how she’ll get there. They were hinting at adoption way back then.

Now I for one, love things about a pregnancy storyline and an adoption storyline. I decided to remain open to both. I’m glad I did.

This scene was expected and so, so lovely. Thank you, Jadyn. Thank you, Eddie. Thank you writers and director. So, so, so good.

One More Time, For The People in the Back

The writers use the characters to tell us things. The very last thing anyone says before the shit hits the fan is Cabe…the dad…telling us it’s all going to be OK. That wasn’t for comic effect. It wasn’t funny. It was one last reminder to us to hold on tight and to keep the faith.

The Showdown

Sometimes no one can have evil or malicious intent, and a relationship can still fall apart. The tough thing about the argument is that no one can really lay exclusive claim to the high road. Everyone is part right, part wrong. Part innocent, part guilty.

Kudos to the writers for having Paige articulate that it wasn’t the lie, it was the hiding. Just as Toby foretold. #GoDoc Now, no matter how much Walter explains, she’s suspicious. I explore this theme in The Curtis Method, so I identify with this dynamic.

To top it off, it looks like what Walter kept has the unfortunate characteristic of hitting a big sore spot Paige has been dealing with. She’s self conscious about not being able to fulfill Walter’s intellectual needs. I think that’s totally legit. And in her anger and frustration she admits that he isn’t fulfilling her social needs either. Anger+doubt. This is so much bigger than it had to be.

Do I think Walter cheated? Absolutely not. Do I think that, perhaps even without realizing it, he kept bringing Flo close again and again because she was scratching that high-IQ itch for him? Yes, I do. He didn’t mean any harm. Sometimes, things gets all messed up even when no one had any intention of doing anything wrong.

So, it’s already pretty complicated and messed up and Flo’s about to throw a stick of dynamite into the mix. I’ve thought from the beginning Flo was keeping something and now we know what (at least as much as we can until the story continues)…she developed feelings for Walt after all. Again, Walter had no clue…but in Paige’s head, like the pebble in the box, it compounds the suspicion and hurt.

Before you think I find Paige blameless, I don’t. She led Walter into this minefield with the white lies and she has, for most of the season, been dating not Walter as he is, but Walter as she wishes he was. As she thinks he could and should be. That’s not fair to either of them. I would LOVE to see an exploration of Paige’s mindset (therapy/couples therapy, etc.) next season. Because again, dammit, next season is happening. I’ve made up my stubborn mind.

We leave off with one last set of clues it will be OK. For one thing, Centipedes is a ridiculous name, and the show is called Scorpion. (Did anyone notice the shirts said “Centipede PARTNERS”? Calls back to the conversation in 4x20 about the profit shares. We also see that Cabe has stayed to keep an eye on Walt, and that the ‘Pedes are doing just fine on their own, thank you very much. The door closes on WALTER. WALTER is the one on the outside. I think that’s an indication that Walter is going to have to do some soul searching and decide whether his team is more important than his precious pride.

And I know that seems bleak, but I’m actually really excited, once renewal is certain, for the storytelling possibility. It will be painful, but it will open such wonderful new doors. Why?
