You Weren’t Supposed to Get Hurt
Cody quietly walked into the hospital room, only the slight stutter to his entering step giving away the hesitation he had in coming in. Machines beeped and holoscreens showed readings of the figure lying in the biobed. Cody approached the bed, contrite as he looked down at Starlee, who was laying so very, very still on it.
Starlee wasn’t supposed to be still. She wasn’t supposed to be quiet either. Starlee was supposed to be full of life, zooming from one place to another on her skates, and giving him that look that said she knew what he was up to, and that she had a backup plan. She wasn’t supposed to be lying in a bed, unconscious, with a head injury that they weren’t sure the effects of.
Her parents were on their way. It would take them a couple of days to get here, but Cody had made sure to book them the fastest transportation that he could get. Telling them that their daughter was seriously injured had been the hardest thing he’d ever had to do, especially since it was his fault.
Cody stood at her bedside and grasped the bed rail.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “You weren’t supposed to get hurt. You weren’t even supposed to be there. I thought—I thought I could handle it. I know… I know my training isn’t as good as the guys was, but I thought that I knew enough, that I had learned enough that I could handle things and… I was wrong.” He swallowed, “And you paid the price for it.”
He suddenly sat heavily in the chair that was next to the bed, not even looking at Starlee, but instead staring down at his hands.
“I… I didn’t know what else to do. Uncle Darius is a wanted criminal. The guys and Master Splinter have gone back to the past. Serling fell in with them. So, I thought… when this problem came up, I thought…”
Cody closed his eyes and leaned his head on the bedrail. For a few moments, he said nothing, letting the silence envelop the room.
“I thought that you didn’t know, or that I had fooled you, but you were the one that had me fooled. You came back, because you knew I was doing something dangerous, didn’t you? My plan was going to fail, but you saw that and came up with a solution. And it worked. It worked Starlee. But I would have rather it not worked or got hurt myself then have you get hurt.”
Cody looked up again, staring at the very still, very quiet Starlee.
“I’m so, so sorry, Starlee. You weren’t supposed to get hurt.”
A subtle throat clearing caused Cody to look up and over towards the doorway. President Bishop stood in it, and for a moment, Cody just stared at him, before he realized that he should probably stand up. But Bishop didn’t seem to mind, just gestured for Cody to stay seated, and walked further into the room.
“I heard what happened,” he said. “I thought that you might want to know that all of the Dark Turtles are in custody.” Bishop looked down at Cody. “Technically, you are the closest thing they have to family, so guardianship falls to you.”
Cody looked up at Bishop for a moment, and then back down at Starlee. “I…I’m not sure what to do. After all, they’re the reason that Starlee is—I just wanted some fam—It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.” He cut himself off from anything further and took a minute to gather himself before he looked back up at Bishop. “Can they stay where they are for now? Just until I get this all figured out.”
Bishop nodded. “For a few more days, yes. But they can’t stay forever.”
Cody took a deep breath. “I know,” he said.
Bishop reached a hand out and put it on Cody’s shoulder. “You might want to know that the Blue One asked me to pass on a message to you. He said that he didn’t mean for the girl to get hurt.”
Cody blinked back up at Bishop, taking a moment to process those words. “Thank you,” he said after a moment.
Bishop nodded, removed his hand, and then turned to leave. “Mr. Jones. The government thanks you and Miss Hambrath for your help in capturing these dangerous criminals. We can only hope that rehabilitation will be successful.”
Cody blinked at Bishop “Yeah,” he finally said. “Rehabilitation. I—that sounds like a good plan.”
Bishop nodded. “You should also know that Miss Hambrath’s family will be slightly delayed due to a report of the invasive scablen beetles on their next shuttle,” Bishop said. “They are being transferred to a different shuttle, one that was bringing experts in various medical fields to Earth for a symposium. Fortuitous how that happened.”
Cody’s breath caught as he realized what Bishop was saying, but he slowly nodded his head instead of saying anything. “Yeah, it is fortuitous,” he said.
Bishop walked towards the door again, but then he paused, and turned around. “Mr. Jones. You are… aware… of my more sordid past. Perhaps not all of it, but in more detail than many people. If I have learned one thing in all of my years, it’s that improper training is often worse than no training. I’m not saying that the Splinterson clan trained you improperly, but that you haven’t learned your limits and how to implement it yet. However, if you would like to continue your training and learn how to implement it properly, then I can open certain avenues for you.” He nodded his head towards Starlee. “It might prevent things like this from happening again.”
Cody nodded slowly. “I—thank you, Mr. President. I’ll probably take you up on that offer.”
With a final nod, Bishop left, and Cody turned his attention back to Starlee. He stared at her for a moment, before reaching out and picking up her hand.
“You weren’t supposed to get hurt,” Cody said. “And I never want to see you get hurt again, Starlee. I’m going to make sure that nothing like this ever happens again.”
And if that meant he was going to throw himself into new training, work on rehabilitating the dark turtles, and put every bit of O’Neil Tech’s influence and money behind Starlee’s recovery, then that’s what he’d do.
Because this? This could never happen again.

Illustrations of the turtles' memories from the seventh episode of Back to the Sewer, "Identity Crisis." Minor bits of trivia
Leonardo and Donatello only have seven memory illustrations whereas Raphael and Michelangelo have eight (I double checked this in my files.)
The memories based on the Fast Forward season feature their associated turtles with white slits for eyes rather than irises and pupils like the other illustrations based on previous seasons.
Leonardo is the only turtle not to have a memory associated with the Fast Forward season, although his memory involving Renet does depict his eyes as white slits like the other Fast Forward memories

@tmaynt Day 23: Favorite Human Ally
At first I wasn't sure who to do, I love April and Casey, but they had their own days, so I thought I'd focus on some of their other human allies. I thought about doing the Professor from 2003 (Not Professor Hunnicut aka the Fugitoid, The Professor who's name we never learned but was invited to their christmas and never commented on the fact that the turtles were turtles). Also thought about doing Silver Sentry because he's a cool dude, but wasn't sure if a superhuman counted as human lol.
THEN I remembered Cody Jones, and I love him. He's the descendant of April and Casey and is brilliant like his Great Grandma and eager to fight along side the guys like his Great Grandpa. He's a turtle fan boy but doesn't let that cloud his vision of them. He gets to have a silly fun time with the turtles, and the guys get to be out in public during the day thanks to being brought to the future. He's honorary little brother to the turtles <3

Okay so gonna properly elaborate here because this concept gives me thoughts but mostly I’m actually relieved we didn’t get this episode, not gonna lie.
I think my biggest issue with it is framing it as Stockman “joining the good guys” which wasn’t really ever a big goal and I don’t think it’s how he’d frame it, you know? He’s fighting for his autonomy and freedom to do what he wants in a body he wants. And like, sure he might be doing legal things with his Mousers now but you KNOW he would be a smug bitch about it all. I don’t think he’d do it for the sake of “being a good guy.” That would be such a one-dimensional reason!
Second of all, what do you MEAN “tempted by the Shredder”????? When Bishop offered him a legit normal job and a legit normal life Stockman was like “oh ya what’s the catch do I have to let you torture me forever again?” And Bishop’s done like. Way less damage than the Shredder, so his reaction to the Shredder would most likely be wayyy worse. Like?? Tf you MEAN “ooo Dr Stockman join me to finally kill these worms” fuck you?? No! Obviously the turtles are the right choice, especially if you take the Hacking Stockman episode into account.
If you wanna make this episode about Stockman’s character development and morality, I think the way to do it would’ve been for him to have a chance to escape and have to choose between abandoning the turtles and Cody and going back to help them fight the Shredder. Would that not be badass, for him to come back and back them up???
Also I am a liiiiittle salty because “The Devil and Dr. Stockman” is a BANGER title but you guys can NOT tell me it doesn’t sound like it’s talking about Bishop. Something something “handsome devil if I do say so myself” and all. Like Bishop legit was created to make a new scary villain because the Shredder was getting easy to defeat and thus less scary. Bishop is ruthless, nigh undefeatable and just generally scarier, and you’re gonna waste your devil imagery on Ch’Rell??
Plus — GOD, dude, just leave Ch’Rell on that god damn asteroid he got banished to, man. He’d gotten so stale by this point and I am SO relieved they didn’t have a chance to make him come back for the umpteenth time 😭
ANYWAYS. Getting stuck and hunted on a hostile planet sounds AWESOME though, and I so badly wish we got a Cody and Stockman interaction. Would that not be awesome? Also a friendly relationship between Stockman and Donnie would’ve been neat I think. I just live for the nerds of the group hanging out together okay :(( Plus like by all means please DO confront Stockman’s morals! He didn’t kill Bishop, but is he actually willing to lead a normal life now? Will this last? How does his trauma reflect on his survival instinct? Would he just get a normal body again?
Bishop : Living his best life
[Somehow Shredder returned]
You’re joking but APPARENTLY this was supposed to happen to Stockman 😭

I suddenly feel the urge to ramble about this on my turtle blog but let’s just say that this would not really work for the AHC AU, lmao. You know, one of the things we came up with on literally the first day of creating this AU was, “hey what if this entire AU Stockman is just vibing and living his best life?” So. Close enough, anon! But personally I am in favor of letting the Shredder stay dead 💞

Flinching
Title: Flinching       Day: Febuwhump Day 2: Flinching   Fandom: TMNT Word Count: 2375   Author: aquietwritingcorner/realitybreakgirl Rating: G/K   Characters: Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo, Cody Jones     Warning: NA     Summary: Being viewed as just regular people, able to just walk around is what they’ve always dreamed of, right? Yet Leo can’t stop his instinctive flinches towards his weapons or to the shadows, and he doesn’t think his brothers can either.     Notes: Takes place during Fast Forward.     ff.net ||AO3

Flinching
“Oh, excuse me.”
Leonardo tensed and flinched as the large alien bumped into him. His hands automatically started to jump up to go after his swords before he caught himself and he aborted the movement. The alien was looking at him a little strangely, and Leo did his best to smother his discomfort.
“It’s not a problem,” he said, keeping his voice even.
The alien looked as if he didn’t quite believe him, but he let it slide and walked off. Leo took a breath and made his way across the crowds and to the table at the food court that his brothers were at. He had to dodge a few more people along the way, although a few still bumped into him. They had, apparently, picked a busy day to come to the mall and people were everywhere. By the time he made it to the table he felt like his shoulders were so tense that he might as well have been trying to put his head in his shell. He knew better than to show that tension in such an obvious way—not that he could put his head in his shell anyway—but that didn’t mean that he didn’t feel it.
“Took ya a bit, bro,” Raph said as soon as Leo got close enough to the table. To the average person it might have sounded accusing, but Leo could hear the note of relief in his brother’s voice.
“Yeah, we thought you might have fallen in,” Mikey joked, but Leo could see the same relief in him.
“Mikey, that’s impossible, as we’ve told you many times,” Don said, but Leo could see the once over that his brother gave him.
“Sorry,” he said, “There was a line.” Leo apologized, pulling out a chair and sitting down.
“It is a little crowded in here,” Don said, looking up from his wrist computer. “According to the sensors, there’s around 4,567 people in here.”
“Oh, only around 4,567?” Raph said sarcastically.
Don frowned and looked back at the computer. “Yes, only around,” he replied, with a little bit of bite in his voice. “The sensors can’t account for everything like children being carried or hidden, beings who share a body, people in—”
“We get it, there’s a lot of people here,” Raph said, cutting Don off.
It wasn’t typical for Raph and Don to bicker as they were, and Leo quickly recognized it as a symptom of the same problem he was having. Raph, despite looking relaxed, was tense and coiled. His hands kept flexing near his sais, especially when anyone came near the table of their chairs. He looked ready to jump up the moment anyone laid a hand on any of his brothers.
Don’s eyes being practically glued to the holographic display—and probably hacking the mall’s security system—was him gathering as much data and information on a situation as he could. And if he wasn’t looking at his data, as he wasn’t now, while he and Raph were busy fighting, then he had his collapsed bo staff in his hand, twirling it about.
They were both signs of the two of them being as uncomfortable as Leo was. The bickering was just another sign of how tense they were.
Leo looked over at Mikey wondering if he was feeling the same. He seemed to have something from at least six different restaurants in front of him. He was eating on all of it, seemingly the picture of a teenager eating his weight in food. Leo knew better. Mikey’s eyes darted around as he ate, clearly watching who was coming near. He was almost shoveling the food in, something he typically only did when he was stressed. It was an echo of their childhood, when there often wasn’t enough, or they would have to move quickly if someone came. They had all learned to eat fast, although over the years the had all learned to break that habit to some degree, but Mikey retained it when he was stressed.
The amount of food he had, and the way he seemed to subtly lean forward, like he was protecting it, tensing up whenever anyone came close, the hand that kept flinching towards his weapons, was just another sign to Leo of how uncomfortable Mikey was.
What a fine group they made in a crowded mall. Leo felt something in his chest tighten in response to his brother’s stress, but he ignored it, looking instead at Cody.
Cody, fortunately, seemed just fine, although perplexed by their behavior. “You guys alright?” he asked, taking a drink of whatever passed for soda in this century.
“It’s just crowded in here,” Leo said, trying to keep his voice even. He knew that he wasn’t fooling his brothers, just like they weren’t fooling him, but he was pretty sure that they all were fooling Cody.
“The food court is always crowded,” Cody said with a shrug. “Or at least, that’s what Starlee’s told me. She’s visited all of the malls multiple times. We can always go somewhere else if you want.”
“Oh—yes! Let’s do some more exploring!” Mikey said, perhaps a little too excited for it. “There’s supposed to be this awesome retro store on the third floor that has stuff from our time! I wanna go see if they’ve got anything good!”
Raph stood up a little too quickly. “Anything to get outta this place.”
Don shrugged, switching his display to a map of the mall. “I’m game.”
“Then let’s go check it out,” Leo said, just as glad as his brothers to get out of the crowded food court.
The store was three floors up, and the most direct path was just as crowded as the rest of the mall. Leo lost count of how many times he was bumped into, accidently touched, or almost lost sight of one of his brothers in the crowds. Each time it happened and he had to hide his instinct to jump into the shadows, pushing it down to a mere flinch instead, that tight part of his chest felt a little bit tighter. He could tell that his brothers were feeling it, too. They all started to unconsciously fall into old patrol patterns, the kind that let them know where the others were without a word. It had helped them on D'Hoonnib, and it was helping them now.
It was a relief when they finally made it to the store. Unfortunately, the store itself was a letdown, without much that was really popular from their time and a very unknowledgeable management. But for Leo, that wasn’t the biggest problem. His tension only grew as they made their way back through the mall to other stores. But every person who bumped into them, every being who got too close to himself or his brothers, he had to fight the instinct to hide, to run, to fight. The sensation only grew, until all he could feel was this need to get himself and his family away, and he was flinching at every small thing.
Of course, his brothers noticed.
Leo had no idea who made the decision to duck into a music store, but he was more than glad to get away from the crowds in the common area. Don and Mikey wandered away with Cody, the two of them sticking tight together, just like if they had been split up for a patrol. Raph hung back with Leo.
“Leo?” Raph asked as they stood just out of view of the entrance to the store. “You alright, bro?”
Leo gave a tight nod. “Yeah,” he said. “It’s just—”
Someone dropped something that landed with a loud bang, someone else yelled, and Leo reacted instinctively, pulling into the shadows, taking Raph with him. He only just stopped himself from reaching for a katana, although his arm had been halfway there.
Raph’s face filled with understanding.
“I get that,” he said, and glanced down, to where his hand was tight on the hilt of one of his sais. “I’ve had enough. You wanna get out of here?”
“Yes,” Leo said through gritted teeth.
Raph signaled to Mikey and Don, who had obviously been watching for a signal. It only took them a matter of seconds to come to Leo and Raph’s side, melting into the shadows the same as Leo and Raph. Only Cody stood out, looking a bit confused.
“You ready to go?” Raph asked them.
“Yes,” Don said without hesitation.
“Sounds good,” Mikey said, almost as quickly.
Cody blinked at them. “But we’ve only been here a couple of hours.”
“Yeah, well, it’s enough for us,” Raph said, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Let’s go.”
“Okay,” Cody said, sounding confused and a little disappointed.
“Nearest exit is that way,” Don said, his map up on his display again. “It’s not a standard exit, but it’ll get us out of the crowds. From there we can make our way to the Hovershell and then back to Cody’s Penthouse.”
“Lead the way,” Raph said.
Leo honestly didn’t mind that Raph was taking the lead right now.
Don let them out, Mikey steering Cody along with them, Leo and Raph following behind. Raph never left Leo’s side, for which Leo was grateful. He recognized this now. It was a type of anxiety. Understanding that, Leo worked his way through some breathing exercises, trying to calm screaming instincts and fight off the urge to disappear as they all normally would.
Don, as usual, knew what he was doing, and he had them out of the mall and in some random, empty area behind a door that they probably weren’t supposed to open in no time. He led the way through a maze of confusing hallways, but the emptiness helped Leo to calm a bit. He, like his brothers, slipped into more of a ninja mindset, sticking close to the shadows and staying quiet, listening for anything that might be a problem. It was soothing to him to fall into familiar patterns, and he felt his tension decrease just a little bit. Cody, not sure what was going on, stayed silent.
Finally, Don led them out of those strange hallways and into the parking garage, not far from the Hovershell. The relief was palpable when they were safely inside, and Leo sat down almost immediately, taking a few good, deep breaths as Don started it up and piloted them out of there.
“Ya good, Leo?” Raph asked.
Leo nodded. “Yeah. I think… I think it was just too much.”
“I don’t understand,” Cody said, obviously confused. “I thought that you’d love being able to go to a mall. I mean, wasn’t being able to live a normal life something you guys always wanted?”
“Always wanted,” Don said, “but didn’t have.”
“Huh?”
“What he means,” Raph said, “is that usually when people can see us, it’s not a good thing.”
“Yeah, that’s usually when someone’s about to scream, or attack us, or even just call the police,” Mikey said.
“We’re not used to it, Cody,” Don said gently. “You’ve lived a sheltered life, but even you’ve had Starlee and Serling and your uncle. You’ve been to galas, and symposiums, and to the laboratories. You’re used to having a spotlight turned on you and people seeing you. Maybe they aren’t your favorite things, and you wish you had more freedom, but you’ve still been conditioned that these things are normal. For us, they aren’t.”
“We only had each other and Master Splinter when we were young,” Mikey said, unusually serious. “Anyone seeing us meant we could be taken away, experimented on, or killed. We knew that pretty much all our lives.”
“We were trained,” Raph said. “We were trained to hide in the shadows the moment we saw or heard somethin’. We were supposed to be invisible, hidden. Anyone who caught even a glimpse could be a threat to us or to our family.”
“It’s ingrained in us,” Leo said, raising his head up to look at Cody. “It’s been deeply ingrained all of our lives.”
“So ingrained that being around people gave you a… a panic attack?” Cody asked.
“Hey, I was gettin’ pretty ancy too,” Raph said, coming to Leo’s defense and giving his arm an unseen squeeze. “I was about ready to lose it on the next person that bumped into me. Probably would have on whoever yelled, if Leo hadn’t dragged me towards the shadows.”
“I wasn’t doing so well either,” Don admitted. “That’s why I had an exit strategy ready. But I about jumped out of my shell at that bang.”
“Gotta admit that, as cool as it was not to be looked at twice, it was still pretty overwhelming to be around that many people,” Mikey said. “It felt like any one of them could grab us at any moment. I was ready to fight or run when I heard the bang and yell.”
“That’s why I went towards the shadows.” Leo said. “It was instinct. But I guess this new normal is just something we’re going to have to get used to.”
“I guess so,” Cody said, still sounding a bit mystified, but accepting it nonetheless, and the conversation faded away.
But although the conversation faded, it was clear to Leo that the experience hadn’t. Raph was still sitting near him, his leg bouncing with pent up energy. Don, even while driving, was looking up information about routes. Mikey, kept glancing out the windows, twisting a nunchuck in his hand idly. Leo was still doing breathing exercises. All of them were still very keyed up from the experience.
Leo didn’t know if they would ever get used to being around people. He wasn’t even sure that he wanted them to. Getting rid of that instinct now might make it worse when they went back to their own time. Yet at the same time, living in this tension was not going to do them any good either. Leo shifted, thinking. He would have to talk to Master Splinter about this.
In the meantime, though, at least he and his brothers could look out for each other. That was an instinct he would never flinch away from.
