ARG notes: ZampanioSim

Okay, a work this metafictional and also that (I think) responds to audience interaction is going to need a high-caliber gimmick. Hang on.

Alright. Hey guys, catfishAnabasis (Light) here, taking a moment out of my surprisingly busy day tell you about a weird thing on the internet.

ZampanioSim is an intricate and brainbending ARG. It takes direct inspiration from Homestuck, The Magnus Archives, and House of Leaves, as well as the creator (JR, jadedResearcher/justifiedRecursion)'s previous canon of Homestuck fan-work and games. A major theme is "unreality".

I know very little about JR's other work, right now. However, among my many INTERESTS, I am something of a TMA ENJOYER and an AMATEUR INTERNET INVESTIGATOR, and if I were in a HOUSE I like to think I could LEAVE it pretty easily.

So, yeah. I figured I'd just describe my experience of this rabbithole and maybe you'll want to check it out too. I'm sure this will only scratch the surface.

ZampanioSim is structured as a nested labyrinth. In the same way that:

Homestuck is a webcomic framed as an interactive adventure game about an account of kids playing a video game (Sgrub) that doesn't exist, and

House of Leaves is a novel framed as a found scholarly discussion about a documentary (The Navidson Record) that doesn't exist about a house that doesn't exist,

ZampanioSim is a game-based ARG framed as an attempt to simulate a game (Zampanio) that doesn't exist based on a found FAQ of the game (that only sort of exists).

More concretely, ZampanioSim features a lot of nested browser games, as well as audio, narrative, an actual audience-interactive narrative game (the way Homestuck was originally), external websites, and more.

The starting point is, of course, the House:

ZampanioSim takes full advantage of the browser as medium. There is content accessible via the address bar, developer tools, cookies (I think), the developer console, and probably more that I haven't realized.

Like, to give you a sense of the kind of rabbithole we're dealing with: Here's a map I made of the House outset page today:

...And I say today because the House does change over time. Today (a friday) when I clicked on the EastEast route, for instance, I was greeted by this grotesquely distorted version of Rebecca Black's "Friday":

Okay, let's talk about what we have going on in the House map, starting from the doors and working out. (I've given some of these my own names for clarity.)

North

The Classpect Menu Game:

This, I think, is the main titular "ZampanioSim". It's the part that's intended to recreate the experience of a supposed old computer game, but by and large, you only experience the menu screen, not the rest of the gameplay. You can select attributes (based on Homestuck's Classpecting system + the Magnus Archives fears) gain points and select skills and (depending on your seed) eventually "beat the game". It's glitchy, it's a hellscape, there's an entity or two in the menu system that are trying to talk to you. It's great fun. Contains links to a rabbithole (which you can plug passwords into for more secrets) and + some secrets to you in the credits.

(While mostly the aspects seem to add flavor to the menu options, there's a special class called "Waste". This appears in neither TMA nor Homestuck, but comes from a fan or meta-joke that Andrew Hussie and Toby Fox, the writer and a major composer for Homestuck, are classpected* as the "Waste of Space" and "Waste of Time". By telling it you're a "Waste"you're more likely to get weird glitches and new options in your Classpect Menu game run - there's a fun recurring element in some of these games about the game changing depending on who you tell it is playing. I learned about the Waste trick from JR's youtube channel. Also, setting your birthday as Halloween might also do something.)

I have no idea if the different iterations of games here are substantially different. I haven't checked. There's a lot going on. "There's a lot going on" is a good summary of ZampanioSim overall.

*( Uh, classpecting is this in-Homestuck personality system where game players are a [Role] of [Element].)

Eyedlr: Eyedol Games is the company that supposedly made the original game Zampanio. Eyedlr is their spambot-filled tumblr clone, which also has secrets in it. (Actually, just assume everything has secrets out.)

East

The House Exploration game: It has the same setup screen as the Classpect Menu game, but this one drops you into a game with visuals: An infinite(?) procedural house you navigate with imagery derived from your choices.

Peewee's exploration game: When it's not blasting Rebecca Black's Friday But Weird into your ears, the EastEast route is another procedural infinite(?) maze, except that you type directions to Peewee, a snake guy with goggles who also moves around on his own. This one also introduces named characters we learn more about elsewhere.

Bathroom text: Procredural bathroom maze, unless it's just some text telling you to take a break. ZampanioSim really likes telling you to take breaks and hydrate, so that you can better appreciate and spread Zampanio.

Absolutely not. Also, I'm a busy woman. I have to finish this writing summary first.

South

The Train Game: a game - notably not a maze - where JR walks down a series of train corridors and monologues to you about the game and the "reality" behind it.

The mazecrawler game: You tell a little guy how to navigate an infinite(?) maze - and if you choose right and open up your browser's Console menu, you can learn a great deal more about

West

The only West route is AdventureSimWest, which is an actual text narrative game where readers submit commands that the author incorporates into updates - just like early Homestuck. It's still going. The logs are extensive but it's mostly about the antics of a new employee at Eyedol Games, which is stuck in a time loop.

Other

Then there's some other scattered clickable text -

The truth about alt: An exchange between two shapeshifters.

A transcript: A dialogue between two people who apparently work for Eyedol Games.

The lower left leads you to an apparently rotating selection of other Zampanio-related games. I particularly liked NagaGirlfriend.

None of this is even the stuff you can reach this page exclusively through the Console menu.

And much more

And there's a lot of stuff that's NOT branching directly off of the house. There's other things you find buried in links or by searching - a discord and a wiki that both straddle the line between in-character and -out, Archive of Our Own content, a youtube channel, the Eyedol website...

Is there a "story" to ZampanioSim?

Yes.

Like I said, there's a lot I haven't seen yet. But what's going on is something like this:

JR is attempting to recreate this game, Zampanio, of course, and tap into its fanbase. The game Zampanio is an infectious meme. Eyedol Games is a transdimensional company that is perhaps both trying to spread the meme and contain it, by removing its spores, e.g. the Zampanio FAQ - the thing that inspired JR to make ZampanioSim - from the internet.

Various parts of the game recognize that they are fictional and may identify you the reader/player as "Observers".

There are a few recurring characters who have gotten swept up into the meme, either working for Eyedol or trapped in ZampanioSim or both, and have followed it from variant to transdimensional variant.

Japes aside, this is a brain-bending, very cool, and completely ludicrous unfiction project which I believe is made mostly by one person with an unparalleled hand for web sorcery, whimsy, and vibes. The vibes are so good.

The host website, Farrago Fiction (which AFAICT is a multi-person project), hosts a number of often-homestuck-inspired weird games and simulators.

I know ZampanioSim is now a few years old and is still actively updating. Consider checking it out.

TMAGP 16 Thoughts: Aave Maria

This was an interesting one. I don't think I loved it but I do think there is a surprising amount to dig into. I also think this is showing more of the form of TMP. A bigger focus on a rogue's gallery and unlike TMA is more more in the thick of it to start with. We're not piecing together an unseen world, we're in the world and getting our bearings.

Spoilers for episode 16 below the cut.

It's really great to see some immediate follow up on Alice's run in with Drowning Victim. I was a little worried it'd be something she pushes down and ignores like everything else in the job. Because she didn't I think there might be a change in her perspective. Previous she's been very uninvested in the specifics of the cases and now she's basically been in one I do wonder if it'll effect her work. We definitely saw more of a reaction from her from this incident than we've ever seen before. So I'm wondering where that will lead her. I'll also be interested to see how this ties back into the Institute. The Drowning Victim is obviously connected but it makes me think Connor Dyer (found in CHBD, see master sheet below) might not be her dead name. I wasn't a fan of the idea of both main protagonists having the same backstory but the way she alluded to the death of her parents here makes me think the Institute might have had something to do with it. Not that I think she knows that but that the narrative placement of it might be laying the groundwork for that connection to be revealed.

For the incident itself I don't have a load to get into I don't think. I thought it was pretty effective in showing Madame E to be kind of a tool but then giving us more and more reason to be sympathetic towards them. Ink5oul's first voiced appearance was remarkably understated too. I was expecting them to feature more here but I think I'm glad they didn't. As I mentioned there is more of a rouge's gallery here and with a couple of really loud characters already it's quite nice to see one more understated than that. They've got a bit of an M.O. forming here too. Part ironic "punishment", part graverobbing plagiarist. DIG. Which does lead me to wonder about how they'll end up kicking the bucket. It feels like a set up waiting for a punchline. The way they give the "clients" what they're after in a twisted sense has a lot of room for interesting stories so I'm interesting to see where that goes. It's also interesting just how similar this was to Daria's incident. Very similar incidents overall but to different ends. What I think is a more interesting concept in those is how it totally differs from the tattoo that showed up in Marked. The tattoo in both of Ink5oul's works have been afflictions on the tattooed but Marked's tattoo was something that affected those that viewed it. Whether that's a consequence of they're plagiarism or a different "school" of tattoo technique remains to be seen.

Also fun fact: from.vision.ruled really is a location in Highgate Cemetery. There is a map app called what3words that is a grid of 3 metre squares over the globe and then each square gets a three word code. It's so you can give a more precise location than something like an address or broad location. So in this case you don't need to say "Meet me outside the Circle of Lebanon in Highgate East" you can say "Meet me at from.vision.ruled" and get a more accurate location. It's great if you want to meet people where there isn't much or any signage, point people towards the entrances to places when it's not obvious from a address, and stuff like that.

Post-incident was really great too. It's lovely to see Lena be so clearly angry and lose her typical collected nature. Not only because it shows she's got range but because it really hammers home just how scary a character like Lady M. is going to be. Gwen not taking her shit for it is also great. I think bringing Lady M. to the OIAR as a power play was pushing it hard but I also think Lena treats Gwen like shit and needs a lesson or two as well. This power struggle they've got going is always captivating to see and I can't wait to see more of it.

Incident/CAT#R#DPHW Master Sheet (Now with terminology/theory cheat sheet)

DPHW Theory: 1565 is about where I was expecting this would end up. 1 in Death in an episode where someone died already seems to be a sticking point for people. I personally don't understand that particular framing. Every Power in TMA had a massive body count but only one of them was the Power about death, and not all of them focused on stuff that'd outright kill you. So while a person did die this episode it's not an episode about Death as a concept/theme/subject.

CAT# Theory: CAT1 is very interesting given how the other tattoos have been placed thus far. But I'm going to leave that for the time being. I've got an essay in the works about the current more common CAT# theory. Should be out over the weekend.

R# Theory: B seems about right for this. It's weird and publicised but, ostensibly, medically explainable. So it happened and we can agree it happened but it's just an unfortunate illness in the eyes of most.

Header talk: Tattoo (Influencer) -/- Cardiac is interesting in the same way the CAT# is so I'll leave some of that for later. What I do want to talk about in that subsection. Influencer as a subsection is intriguing because it's very unlike Smirke's methodology. That was fairly rigid but Influencer in this context is such a modern term that it implies this methodology is reacting to how things change and express more rapidly, or it's not as old as I think has been implied so far.

Jon couldn't help but stare at the letter in his hand, refusing to believe it was true. A ghostly thought of the Eye made his skin crawl as his mind wished to simply know, but Jon had fully regained his normal human form and hadn't truly felt the eye since... the incident three months ago. The incident where, despite Jon being the one taking the stabbing, caused his beloved to perish. 

But here was a letter, supposedly from Martin, in his handwriting and smelling of his distinct scent. Then here was Jon, in the states, looking down into a vast layer of fog where several maps and a kind gas station worker claimed Silent Hill lied. He truly did not have much to go on, but if he were honest, Jon truly did not have anything more to lose.

Overly Sarcastic Productions: End & Eye

This one was a bit hard to tag because they make so many different things, but I think the Mischellaneous Myths videos that really stick in my brain are the ones where Red is trying to puzzle out information about a god or story and how it developed and the information is just gone. I think there's also some of that in History Summarized on Blue's end. I think OSP as an embodiment of fears of knowledge being lost, that tries to prevent knowledge from being lost, but also feeds on the horror of everything that's already gone because it's End aligned would be very cool.

Kennie JD's Bad Movies And A Beat: Stranger

This is specifically bad movies and a beat because I don't watch most of her other stuff and can't speak on it. A lot of Bad Movies And A Beat involves movies that are badly written and acted in a way that you could easily push towards human imitators and the uncanny valley and "why does this writer write like he's never met a human being? Because he hasnt". Also like! She doesn't always do her makeup but I feel like the fact that Kennie is changing her appearance with makeup, especially since her look is heavy foundation, very extreme, very far from how she looks without it, really does add to the stranger energy.

Film Theory (and that whole quartet of channels): Spiral/Eye

Matpat is elbow-deep in red string and thumbtacks, he is claiming that the Cars in Cars are actually insects, he is giving in to the madness. I think there's something inherently very spiral about trying to find patterns in details that in many cases probably just weren't well thought out by the original creators of the media. (like the scratches on Rubble's helmet in paw patrol when it should be new). At the same time, fiction is maleable, and sometimes he's trying to create a story that arguably makes more sense than the original using thoughtless details thrown in by the creators. There's another Spiral component of there being no "real answer" in fiction and it not mattering what the author originally intended if Matpat can use clues they accidentally left to create a different story. And then there's also an Eye component in that sometimes he is looking at details the author intentionally left and piecing together a story they intended to be found! And an Eye component in that some of the other channels, like Food Theory, do have more objective answers, like yes, the best thing to eat with spicy food to make it less spicy is something that can be scientifically found.

Kurzgesagt In A Nutshell: Extinction if it's real! Probably Desolation if it's not but Kurzgesagt has elements of almost every fear when I think about it.

I cannot think of anything more Extinction-coded than Kurzgesagt. I don't even like the Extinction that much but I want it to be real just so Kurzgesagt can belong to it. This channel has a video called "How To Kill The Universe". It's almost a running joke that 70% of their episodes are about an apocalyptic scenario, from the heat death of the universe to "what if we set off all the nukes. what if we turned all the uranium into nukes and then set off all those nukes" to horrifying antibiotic resistant pandemics to "what if we turned the earth into gold" to climate change bad scenarios. Kurzgesagt wants to end the world so bad. From impossible hypotheticals for funsies to things that could happen to things that will happen.

If I'm not allowed to say Extinction I guess the raw destruction for the sake of it of Desolation maps to that the channel the best? The more heat-death type scenarios read as End. They do a lot of astronomy content and also have some scale of the universe episodes and episodes on how the size of an organism affects its biology dramatically, which all feel Vast to me. They explain how a lot of pathogens and notorious diseases work, which is obviously corruption. Then there are a lot of more human psychology videos that dip into Stranger and Lonely. This channel has bits of all of the fears but I'll reluctantly go with Desolation.

TMA ENTITIES X DBD KILLERS

Strap in cos this is gonna be a long one. I'm not going to do all 38 at once because that would actually kill me. So I'm gonna do 10 at a time, covering the original killers. I might cover the licences but then it becomes an argument on how much of their OG representations to include.

The vibe is what Entity I think the killers would serve. Not who they'd be victims of. I.E. I think The Legion would be targeted by The Loney but wouldn't serve it. This is the killers as avatars basically.

With all that out of the way, let's get into these justifications, as always if this has been done before or you have your own interpretations please let me know!

The Trapper

The Slaughter

Starting off hard. In DBD lore Evan doesn't want to serve THE Entity so you could argue none, however I think the most suitable TMA Entity would be The Slaughter.

His kills aren't personal, he commited mass murder, before that he didn't hunt individuals, just punished those who stepped out of line. Even then it wasn't to cause death or for cruelty, he killed as a means to an end. On the other side, he still sees people as people, he didn't view them as flesh to abuse and use.

Because of these action pre-realm, and his impersonal use of beartraps, which maim at random, I think he has similar vibes to the Entity of war and apathetic harm. I could see the argument for The Buried because of how he killed the miners, however I have a much better fit for Too Close, I Cannot Breath.

The Wraith

The Buried

Poor Philip. He also didn't want to be a killer, he spent his life buried. He escaped a war-torn country, he worked a dead-end job, and he literally spent years crushing people to death, with his first and final intentional kill being via crushing aswell.

I don't think he fears The Buried, if he fears an Entity it would be The Slaughter because of his childhood, I think him learning about his accidental murders but then immediately lashing out and inflicting that on his guilty boss shows he embraces The Buried. I think Choke is the best fit for Philip.

The Hillbilly

The Flesh

Also another tragic character. Max was defined by his flesh. I believe by the time he's taken into the realm he's truly internalised The Flesh. We see this in his killing style and home map. His weapon is a chainsaw he uses to butcher and rend, and his realm is a farm covered in slaughtered animals and an abattoir. Hillbilly isn't scared of The Flesh anymore, now he wishes to make everything into meat.

The Nurse

I don't think I can keep calling all the killers tragic ...however. Sally also went through the wringer, she lost her husband, worked in an asylum until the things she saw broke her mind and she strangled 54 people. They find her rocking back and forth sobbing, after completely losing her mind.

However she's not just heavily marked by The Spiral, but she also perpetuates it. It's Meta-Lore that Nurse isn't a normal killer, even compared to other teleporting killers she's on another level, she breaks the game formula, you can't loop normally, she truely is not what she seems. Also I can definitely see a Helen Skin for her, add a door opening animation for her blinks and *chef's kiss*

The Hag

The Desolation

I swear they'll start being less sympathetic soon. Lisa honestly just got screwed over. Was she messing with magic beyond our mortal comprehension? Yes. However that is not a crime, just very Jonathan Simms-coded. Anyways Lisa wouldn't serve The Desolation, however The Hag? The Hag was born after Lisa was tortured, mutilated and starved, and when she got her freedom she chose revenge, she called down calamity on the cannibals and reveled in their deaths.

In the trials The Hag doesn't prioritise quick deaths, she slows down gens, she forces you to hunt down hexes. She wishes to prolong the suffering of the survivors that the Entity makes look like her kidnappers. She has become an Avatar of retribution and cruelty.

The Doctor

See I told you they wouldn't all be tragic characters. Herman is fucking Evil. He didn't have a tragic childhood, he was a child prodigy, he was published as a teen, got into Yale, was set up for being a normal person. However, the CIA gave him unchecked access to prisoners and suddenly the Geneva convention was his personal checklist.

Whilst torture is very Desolation-core, he "excelled" in psychological torture, to the point where even CIA torturers thought he was going to far. DO YOU KNOW HOW BAD YOU HAVE TO BE TO HAVE THE CIA GOING "yo chill". To The Spiral with you Herman, you Doctor David dupe.

The Huntress

The Hunt

I lied the sympathetic characters are back. Good news though, we're not staying here long. She's The Hunt. Duh. She does protect her isolation so you could argue Lonely, however, she's not really got the social development to know what being lonely is, in her mind she's just protecting her territory. The Hunt for you Anna, go forth and prosper.

The Clown

The End

Oh the creepy ones are back. Kenneth/Jeffery is also really hard to place. Because he does a lot of weird shit. He followed the psychopath playbook, killing birds, small animals, then people. He collects FINGERS which he LICKS. This is going to be controversial but I'm gonna put him in The End, I don't like that he shares the same Entity as my baby Oliver, however I think it fits the most.

He doesn't kill for cruelty (Desolation) or the chase (Hunt), but it is personal (not Slaughter), he kills because he just really enjoys killing. He likes killing and ending lives so much he went from track-star to Clown, he collects fingers as mementos. Truely he has a passion for graphic murder. Out of these 10, Clown is the one who enjoys killing the most.

The Spirit

The Web

I'm still salty that Rin is a killer. Glad she's not a survivor though, but I just want my girl to have peace. Rin noticed her family's decline from her mother's health and her school bills, but she didn't confront her father directly. Instead she gets a job to help support the family, she also looks after her mother. Now, this might just be me seeing her as Martin-coded. However, her more subtle approaches in trying to alleviate her fathers burdens seems very Web.

These small changes didn't save Rin though. Her father snaps, he kills her mother and brutalises Rin. In her last moments she begs for control, to not let this be how her story ends, for the power to avenge her mother and kill her father. And something answers. Truely, if Rin was in the TMA world I think it would've been the Mother of Puppets that answered her.

Her gameplay let's her psych out survivors, tracing scratch marks, and ensnaring her chosen prey with Rancor. Lastly her family tree (or family Web if you will) is part of the reason she's in the realm, her convoluted history linking her to The Oni.

The Legion

The Hunt

I tried to limit repeats, however just as Nurse and doctor are so obviously The Spiral. The Legion are just as Hunt as Huntress. Whilst Anna is more akin to Daisy, a lone wolf, the 4 members of Legion are exactly like the Hunt domain of MAG: 176. They look to Frank as their leader, always checking for weakness, when Susie tries to resist stabbing the janitor, they take her hand and guide the knife into the cleaner's throat.

They Hunt together, they're game mechanics include an animalistic frenzy, and they do it for the thrill, the final stop of a past of vandalism, bullying and theft. I think if the Entity hadn't taken them they most likely would've gone down a similar road to the murder club of MAG: 112.

And that's the list! Obviously the argument could be made for all of them to be Web or Desolation as they all serve the same insect-esque dark god, by causing eternal suffering. However that's boring, and a direct cognate to that doesn't exist in the TMA universe (maybe the things that were fear?). If you disagree with any choices lemme know. Doing some research for a sequel to my Gallifrey maps, focusing on Skaro instead and I think I noticed something.

So Skaro has been shown with two distinctly different colourations over the series, a deep red:

And a more Earth-like, nuanced grey-ish planet:

This could be due to whatever happened with the destruction of Skaro, the Time War, Antalin etc, but the colours seem consistent before and after the destruction...

While the timeline of the Daleks is very unclear, this seems to have happened shortly after the Daleks' creation, rather than simply been an effect of the Kaled-Thal war as might otherwise be assumed, with the exception of TMA/TWF being a restored 'cleaned-up' Skaro based on how much safer the outside seems. It could still be a long-term effect of the neutron bomb fallout, but I think we can be a bit more specific.

I think the reddening was a gradual effect that slowly overtook the planet. This goes all the way back to Terry Nation's Dalek Chronicles (even here, Skaro's depiction varies quite a bit).

First of all, there's literally a body of water on the planet called "the Sea of Rust". This can be seen in the "Dalography" map in The Dalek Book, but also much more recently in Dalek: The Astounding Untold History of the Greatest Enemies of the Universe, which features the same map:

Given that rust is exactly what gives Mars its own reddish hue, this sea would seem to be the epicentre, and gives us a realistic mechanism for the change.

But why is this the case? And how does it spread over the entire planet?

The answer comes in Plague of Death, a TVC21 story. The test of a "Dalatomic" weapon results in the creation of a radioactive rust cloud that spreads like a disease (possibly literally as germs?), carried by wind currents across the landscape.

Though the Daleks successfully subdue the cloud, small fragments continue to spread.

The rusted dalekanium does not seem to be infectious in and of itself, meaning the disease does not spreadly directly from Dalek to Dalek. Instead the black Dalek seems to show immunity, but acts as a carrier for the plague.

By the end of the events, the Dalek Emperor seems to believe the disease can be prevented from effecting Daleks in the future. I suspect this relates somehow to developments in dalekanium alloys, given the lack of much effect on the black Dalek.

We know that when Dalek Sec recieved his black casing, it consisted of a type of black metalert (an alloy of Dalekanium), so it wouldn't be surprising if the black Dalek in the story had this too - presumably after the advancements "Zeg" made in a previous TVC21 story. I expect all future Dalek casings were altered to include whatever material it was that protected him - perhaps Flidor gold or Arkelis sap, both of which we know was infused into Dalek casings.

I also think it's possible the static electricity of the Dalek city helped to protect its infrastructure, given how electrolysis can be can be used to remove rust.

So we know the Daleks survive the rust plague, but what about the rest of the planet?

Given the durability of the plague even after the Daleks believe they had surpressed it, fragments likely survived. During the events, a gale is said to be blowing East to South-East. While the rust plague that would have hit the city is stopped, I suspect there was some that missed it and kept blowing in that direction, which would lead it right into the Sea of Rust.

It settles here and begins to spread. Eventually, it spreads over the whole planet, possibly distributed by volcanic activity from the Island of Gushing Gold, turning metals in the surface a deep red and killing off much of the population of metal-based creatures like magnedons. I think we might even have met a victim of the plague way back in The Dead Planet:

As to what happens then... who knows? Maybe, if it really was a germ, then it dies out. Or maybe it mutates to become less harmful, or to consume something else. Whatever happens, Davros's Daleks seemingly end up taking care not to reintroduce it when they rebuild.

MAG 158 Relisten

Activity on my first listen: baking something in the kitchen, most likely with apples...

This is one of my favorite episodes ever! There is just so much going on and every single bit is so exciting, it has me sitting at the edge of my seat. Plus big reveals of course. The panopticon, Elias etc. (And a bit of comedy.) Generally, I think the S4 finale, so MAG 158 to 160, might be the best fiction experience I've ever encountered.

MARTIN: "It’s fine. Don’t particularly like it down here." I mean, not to say that Jon wouldn't have every right to feel uncomfortable in the tunnels as well (e.g. his experiences in them in S2), but Martin also didn't have a good time down here. Wandering for hours and finding Gertrude's body + guilt of having left Jon and Tim behind, accidentally entering the Distortion's corridors only to be spat out in the Archives again (after spending 100 times more hours in there as in their real world) to the bloody mashed potato that is Leitner's head and on top of it we know that Martin is claustrophobic.

Peter just blatantly making uncomfortable small talk. Martin is already on his way to the panopticon with you, why torture him even more??

MARTIN: "Are you sure about that map? I’m pretty certain the tunnels change." PETER: "Oh, don’t worry about that. Ink’s practically still wet. Not to mention, if they do change, well… I happen to have something that will change them back." Hmmm, do the tunnel really change on their own? There is some kind of weirdness to them because of which you usually can't find the panopticon. But otherwise I thought this was just Leitner moving them around... also maps are a funny thing in TMA. There also was the map for Sannikov Land. We never learn where they're from and who made them. Would Elias really have drawn the map for Peter? If yes, he must have been pretty sure that he can prevent Martin from killing his body.

MARTIN: "That’s a Leitner." PETER: "It is!" MARTIN: "And the, um… the blood on it?" PETER: (cheerfully) "That’s Leitner too!" MARTIN: (apprehensively) "…Riiight." Peak comedy!

MARTIN: (wryly sarcastic) "Very impressive." PETER: "I’m reading. Shush." Jon was also like "I didn't hear you reading!" in MAG 80. All of the Archive crew are so used to read something out loud, they don't think it’s even possible to read quietly XD

NOT-SASHA: "So you finally decided to let me out, Jon? (calling) Jooooon?" Not gonna lie, I totally forgot about Not!Sasha on my first listen. So this did actually shock me.

BASIRA: "A couple of guards on duty vanished too." JON: (agitated) "Vanished. How?!" BASIRA: "Just left. Best we can tell, he had some dirt on them." Hmmm, if it wasn't for the "just left" and Peter later being a bit taken aback of Elias being also at the panopticon, the wording "vanish" does remind me an awful lot about Peter! And Peter just got a map to the panopticon... So did Peter get the map from Elias? His astonishment does contradict this... But also I guess Peter could have easily sneaked into prison (like, he can turn invisible, duh) and got that map from Elias! According to Jon, Basira and Daisy earlier it does seem like Elias got out because of his little deal.

Also, last episode Daisy and Basira weren't in the Institute. Maybe they were already out because that old friend from the prison called them. This could have given Elias time to get to the Institute and leave Dekkar's statement for Jon. I totally hadn't considered, that it could have been him as well, not just Annabelle.

MARTIN: "So that’s it. Both Lonely and Watching." PETER: "You must admit you’re the perfect candidate." And the panopticon is actually the perfect location for this.

MARTIN: (shaky breath) "Where are his eyes?" ELIAS: "Exactly where they’ve always been, Martin. Watching over my Institute." OMG, I was soooo blown away! This sentence of course made it very clear, what was going on. Buuuut we get a more direct reveal on that in just a minute, just for anyone still doubting this.

BASIRA: "It’s just that there’s a lot of tapes around." JON: "And I don’t keep any of them with the key to the tunnels. It’s been left for me." DAISY: "And it says ‘play me’. Kind of suspicious." This definitely was Elias.

GERTRUDE: "I’d rather hoped you’d still be hampered with all the Dark’s business. It’s their ‘Grand Eclipse’ at the moment, isn’t it?" So this means it's March!!!

GERTRUDE: "I’m not really in the mood for nostalgia, Elias. You might have noticed I’m rather busy so either shoot me or –" [A GUNSHOT RINGS OUT. GERTRUDE GASPS AND COLLAPSES.] GERTRUDE: (gasping) "Well… there it is. Thought it would hurt more." ELIAS: (sighs) "Pity." 1.) Elias never lets people finish their sentence when killing them. So rude... 2.) MAG 52 - Jon: "I know the secret to her death is on one of them. It must be. I just… I hope I don’t have to hear it firsthand." :/ 3.) I immediately noticed that this was only ONE gunshot, when Martin had explicitly stated that there were (as far as he could tell) THREE gunshots to the chest!!!

This tape was so cool!

JON: "Yes. And I’d wager that Elias’ body –" BASIRA: "Gotta be Jonah Magnus, right?" I mean... who else would it be, but at no point whatsoever does that name come up in the tape. We as audience know it's Jonah's body because we just heard Peter say it.

Ah man, these gunshots and screams are really unsettling...

MARTIN: "If I do kill you, will the others survive?" PETER: "Elias?" ELIAS (JONAH): "Come now, Peter, it’s a valid question. And you should have addressed it yourself, really. The short answer is, I don’t know, Martin. I guarantee it won’t be pleasant for them, but I honestly don’t know if their ties to the Institute are quite as strong as I may have implied. " So he did bluff!!! He genuinely didn't know (because no one knows how the Fears actually work...). If the Archivist dies, the others go free. Maybe it would have worked just like that with Jonah? Who knows!

ELIAS (JONAH): " Melanie’s well out of it, so that just leaves Basira and Daisy. And the rest of the Institute, of course, and you can’t tell me you care about them." But... but... the others can quit? This seems like they are not affected by these "ties" at all. Buuut, this is Elias saying it and he loves to manipulate...

Seriously, Ben's voice acting is phenomenal... He is so smug!

PETER: "Then do it. Kill him and help me save the world." If Martin still wasn't sure until now, this did the trick. Peter acting like Martin's the hero. Martin never believed that and this just was the final straw, if he hasn't made his choice already.

I said in MAG 154 that I think there are two points in the story of TMA, when a time travel fix-it reaaaally could work. This is the second one. I think killing Jonah could have pushed back a possible Fearpocalype for a looooooooong time. I don't know if Peter knows about Elias plan, like in detail (he knows, the wager was to get Jon marked by the Lonely and that he is relevant for the ritual), but perhaps he doesn't know the last step, how to... open the door^^ 

JON: "Do I, uh… do I get a gun?" BASIRA: "You’ve fired one?" JON: (indignant) "You never taught me!" Love comedy like this!

Sburb Aspects and The Fear Entities - TMA x Homestuck (spoilers ahead!!!)

I love the style of hyper-flexible mythology used by both Homestuck and The Magnus Archives: power systems and personality types are all well and good, but stories are elevated so much when those are combined with structures of the world's metaphysical nature. Few stories do it nearly as great as these two (and if you know any on their level please offer those recommendations!).

That said, I think there's a lot of overlap between their systems. Nothing is 1-to-1, of course, the numbers don't match up and they try to map out different types of concept (one explicitly about fear, the other dubiously about storytelling & other stuff maybe): however, some concepts are similarly touched on between the systems. I intend to explore these links in this post.

Now, I'll explain the obvious ones first for each, then touch on some of the less expected matches.

BREATH

The Lonely: First, I hope this one is clear. The Breath aspect is very explicitly about detachment. If its opposite Blood is about attachment and community, Breath touches on isolation and lacking a place. See how HS's Egbert values their friends throughout the comic, but once it ends they become a shut-in. The fog aesthetic also fits the wind theme.

The Vast: Speaking of a wind theme, those who follow The Vast have a more positive view on Breath's detachment, and value their freedom very highly. See how Mike Crew lashes out at Jon when he feels John disrespect his desires and then proceeds to make him feel Lots Of Quick Movement (how Breathy!). Now, onto the weird ones.

The Desolation: Why link The Fire Entity with The Wind Aspect? Well, if The Lonely applies for having no attachments, then The Desolation applies for being the pain of losing those attachments. See how its agents target the homes and families of its victims, leaving them with nothing, cold and shelterless after the fire wanes.

The Hunt: Breath is the aspect of Direction/Motivation and Movement, and The Hunt is all about perpetual chase and goal-seeking.

The Stranger: Breath is associated with levity & humour & magic/clownery, like The Stranger's circus aesthetic. Not to mention The Stranger's penchant for wayward vagabonds (haha), those with no place to call home and always on the move.

BLOOD

The Buried: Things that these two have in common: duty/crushing responsibility/obligation, pacts/promises/transactions, bondage/shackles, metal/soil/the element of earth, and basically everything else.

The Corruption: Penned in some ways as opposing The Lonely, it's also known as The Swarm and The Hive. It's about NEVER being alone, losing your individuality, etc. Also opposed to The Desolation.

The Flesh: Well, Blood is the aspect of the Purely Physical, the Material, the reality of our form, and The Flesh focuses on the idea that we are naught but meat with no spirit. Plus, y'know, blood & viscera imagery doesn't hurt. (okay it probably HURTS but y'know!)

The Hunt: This fear's literally pseudonymised as "Blood"! Touched on in a couple of episodes, The Hunt's domain expands into the fear of the pack turning if you take a wrong step, so you better damn well conform or else!

The Slaughter: Us Vs Them. Conflict is nothing without opposition, and your side matters more than anything in war. You have a duty, and if you neglect your obligations, blood will be spilled.

The Web: Everyone's connected, everyone has a role to play, no man is an island and all actions affect everyone. The Web's domain over addiction could be linked to Blood's claim on dependency... Also, rope bondage?

SPACE

The Vast: Dimension & distance & depth, size & scale, the universe as an ocean, the incomprehensible vastness of reality. These two are so deeply similar, conceptually.

The Lonely: In Calliope and Jade's discussion on the nature of reality, it is revealed that the path of the Spacebound is especially prone to loneliness. Recall the isolation of every Space player before entering the game, and "MAG 57: Personal Space".

The Corruption: Space is biology and growth, and while I can't remember any specific Corruption statements on motherhood I can easily imagine a woman birthing a plague of worms and beetles (or perhaps frogs!), and doting on her "children". It feels like a statement that *should* have happened somehow, it's just so obvious a version of Corruption's themes, y'know?

The Eye: "Those bound to the aspect of Space are, as the name suggests, concerned with the big picture. They are patient, masters of the art of ‘wait-and-see’, and are inclined to take things as they come." Space is the most passive aspect, while The Eye is arguably the most passive Entity (beside The End).

The Extinction: The Spacebound hold an "understanding that sometimes you have to let something burn to the ground in order to build it back better and stronger than before. To this effect, they tend to be innovators, concerned with creation and redemption. Catch them recycling the old to make the new, the fresh, and the beautiful."

TIME

The End: Time's the aspect of endings, conclusion and death. Next.

The Slaughter: Music, rhythm, regularity. Pressure, aggression, action. Different vibes, but surprisingly high overlap.

The Hunt: Was debating whether this was appropriate, since Time values destination over journey while Hunt values the chase over the catch. However, even with this difference, they both hold dominion over unstoppable forces and strict determination.

The Web: How can your free will matter in a clockwork universe? We see Dave struggle with his agency, knowing that only his actions in the Alpha timeline matters. Time loops are very Webbish.

The Extinction: Time is also about what comes next, after the end. Progress, technology, change and eternity are the nature of Time & The Extinction. Out with the old, in with the new.

LIGHT

The Eye: Knowledge, information, sight & light, being noticed whether you like it or not, sorting things into neat discrete categories, focus & clarity & attention. They're the same damn thing! This is the Light of Rose, Doc Scratch and Aranea

The Web: Light players struggle with agency, whether there's any greater meaning, any purpose, any master plan behind life. Well, if The Mother of Puppets has her way, EVERYONE can have a purpose and contribute to her master plan! (Might not be a nice plan, but hey.) This is the Light of the Serket sisters, Vriska & Aranea.

The Hunt: Part of Lights sway over knowledge is its dominion on exploration, discovery, seeking. These aren't *traditional* Hunt symbols but they're certainly present in the text, see most of the Hunters in South America.

VOID

The Dark: Okay, I shouldn't need to explain the link between these two. Obscurity, concealment, secrecy, mystery, the cold, water symbolism, emptiness (especially in space), deaf/blind/losing senses, and literal darkness/shadow? They're basically the same!

The End: The domain of non-existence.

The Flesh: Void, like Blood, deals with the physical world and denies greater divine purpose. Lends itself well to hedonism and empiricism. See Equius and his huge muscles.

The Spiral/Stranger: Falsification of senses and reality, deceit and blurriness, obsession and obstruction. Distortion & Unknowing.

The Vast: Deals with cosmic insignificance, as does Void. See also the ocean imagery.

The Extinction: Again, the idea that we don't matter, and a return to a blank canvas for something new.

HEART

The Lonely: Being alone with yourself, no outside interaction to speak of, longing for love? SO Heart-coded it's unreal.

The End: Heart deeply values The Self Being A Thing That Exists, thus fear of The End must affect it worse than maybe any other aspect.

The Flesh: I'm thinking of body dysmorphia here, the idea that your physical identity doesn't match your Truest Self. See Jared Hopworth's gym, and the perfection its members strive for.

The Hunt: Known as one of the most primal Fears, the Hunt taps into our base, bestial nature more than any other. Heart presides over base instinct, and is associated with animal imagery

The Stranger: "Who will you be, with a name or three, and a stranger's face worn wrong?" - Identity issues are a whole thing. Deals with things not being what they "should", messing with presentation and souls.

MIND

The Spiral: Mind = Sense, equally in terms of logic and perception. The Spiral distorts logic and perception equally. Mind is also about dishonesty to the self, and you can hopefully see the link to Es Mentiras a.k.a. "It Is Lies" there. See The Distortion's identity crisis.

The Web: Mind is also about Choice, of karma, the interconnectivity of everything and thorough planning. The Web is the entity of weaving plans, interconnectivity and the questioning of your own agency and choices.

The Buried: Perhaps a bit tenuous, but Mind touches on karma and I see that as being "trapped by your choices".

LIFE

The Corruption: Uncontrolled growth and biological imagery. I see Life less as bugs (though they're still viable symbols, just less obvious ones!), and more as plant overgrowth, encroaching mold.

The Flesh/Hunt: Life is about consumption, food and domination, the assimilation of the weak to the strong, growth at no expense. Following your desires with no obstacles, fashioning yourself how you see fit. If Aspects had true name like TMA entities, Life could be the "It Will Eat & Grow".

The Extinction: Even without us, life will find a way. Nature shall reclaim all. Isn't it beautiful? Poetic?

DOOM

The Desolation: Pain, searing flame, loss, and sacrifice. Very very Doom.

The Corruption: Rot, disease and decay. Very very Doom.

The Buried: Restriction, limitations, etc. Very very Doom.

The Flesh: Oh my GOODNESS, those factory-farming episodes are DISTURBING. The utter helplessness, the looming tyranny of machines, the exploitation of your body before and after death... SO very VERY Doom. Recall the tragedy of The Ψiioniic Helmsman.

The Web: Fate, predetermination, bondage and learned helplessness. You get the drill by now.

The Extinction: Fossil fuels, factory farming, deforestation, political terrorism... Continuing on our path, Doom and Extinction as synonyms would be inevitable unless things change.

HOPE

The Spiral: "I am the throat of delusion incarnate" - every Hope player ever. Belief, whether in truth or falsehood, is the domain of Hope. I would also like to draw attention to the spoiling of belief, hope, faith and delusion in the "Desecrated Host" two-parter.

The Corruption: Hope is about a different kind of growth than Life but growth nonetheless, and Hope also touches on love as a form of desire. Corruption statements have a heavy emphasis on love, see "MAG 157: Love Bombing" (also features a literal cult belief system!!!)

The Extinction: The Catastrophic Change need not be so catastrophic, if we rebuild after. If Rage shatters glass, Hope will make a mosaic of it. If life as we know it ends, who's to say what comes next can't be better?

RAGE

The Stranger: Carnival, theatre and circus, masks and mannequins. The doubt of everything you encounter is what Rage is all about!!! It's perfect, honestly.

The Slaughter: Aggression, rabidity, anger, unpredictable violence, (in) justice, overhaul of the natural order. Dionysian madness, Pt. 1.

The Desolation: Hope is potential, Rage opposes Hope, and Desolation is the destruction of potential. Rage is happy to see (some parts of) the world burn. The aspect also touches on physical pain, and intensity of emotion.

The Flesh: Carnival, literally "farewell to meat", is the major symbol of Rage as mentioned already. Another case of Flesh's rejection of divine faith, manifesting Rage as Doubt (skepticism and empiricism).

The Hunt: Single-minded dogged determination, the denial of other possibilities in pursuit of The Undeniable Root, the unbreakable truth. PURE adrenaline. Fangs and horns and claws are also very Rage-y vibes.

The Spiral: Doubt of the senses, doubt of the self, doubt at its core. Dionysian madness, Pt. 2.

The Extinction: The Rage-bound are prone to believe that our world is unjust, unstable and unsustainable. All that's needed for everything to crumble is a little shake-up.

* Final Wrap-Up:

The Aspects connected to the most fears are Void and Rage, tied at 7. Makes sense, since the unknown is so central to horror and Rage is literally the aspect of fear! Of course half the fears would connect to either of those.

Doom & Blood tie second at 6 each (also sensibly scary). Mind, Light & Hope tie last at 3 each. The rest all have 4-5.

The Fears which line up with the most Aspects are Extinction at 7 then Hunt and Flesh each with 6 - half of the whole Aspect wheel!!! Funny how it's arguably the most primal Fear and the two most recent Entities which are most prominent.

The Dark alone aligns with just 1 Aspect and The Eye, funnily enough, has a mere 2. I can't really see them as anything else when they are SO similar in concept to Void and Light (though I did come around to Spaceye in the end).

Phe-YEW. Now THAT was a long post, anda took a while to write (presumably to read too!)

So now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna use my discoveries to help myself write a D&D campaign!

still loving it! i have since discovered who the undercover boy was—and can i just say, Laura my absolute beloved—and also hmmmm Butterfly was absent when Yuelia appeared and only re-appeared after she left…hmm hehe i wonder what that’s about! i suppose i’ll just have to see.

and the gameplay’s great! i like how much free roam i have, and how i can kinda do whatever i want, whether that’s solely plot progression or completing requests or whatever it is i want to do. not hand-holdy at all.

also i moved out of Pam’s attic! i think the house i moved into is called the log cabin? it’s in south Castele, on the left side of the map. that one. i don’t have much furniture but i do have a cat—a calico named Lieutenant Jade (typed out in-game as Lt. Jade to fit the character limit haha). fun fact, i’d come up with her a short while before playing Fantasy Life, as a pet cat for Jon Jarchivist Sims in a WIP of mine! so you can see how the TMA obsession kinda melds into everything else i like lol.

so all in all, i’m having an awesome time :D
