I love the idea of like. Nieyao reconciliation but specifically with the flavor of Jin Zixuan accidentally being the one to make it happen.
Jin Zixuan is a brother now and he has no goddamn fucking clue what that means or how to be good at it and he's not usually someone willing to ask for help but Yanli has been encouraging him to speak up and be honest with people more often, and this is important -- arguably one of the most important things he'll ever do! -- so. So. He's gonna need some advice, and there are few places where he can go to get it.
Jiang Wanyin and Wei Wuxian are the most immediately available, but their whole relationship is so messy and complicated and weird that even Jin Zixuan can tell that he should take their interactions with several grains of salt.
Lan Xichen would probably be the most gracious about offering his help, and he and Jin Guangyao are close, so his advice will probably also be like. Custom tailored to whatever is most likely to make a-Yao like Zixuan. But therein kind of also lies the problem, because he and a-Yao are close and he also has a weird psychic-link thing going on with Lan Wangji and Jin Zixuan isn't convinced that Zewu-Jun actually knows how to bond with people; he's pretty sure Lan Xichen has never in his life had to work to build a relationship. Everyone who has ever met the man has walked away seeing stars.
So. That leaves Nie Mingjue. The Nie brothers are very close -- Chifeng-Zun is protective and doting and supportive of Nie Huiasang, who in turn will sing his brother's praises to anyone who is willing to listen (and many people who are unwilling but trapped.) But they're also both normal about it. They bicker. They don't always seem to get along. Sometimes they seem endlessly frustrated with each other. And a-Yao and Nie Mingjue are sworn brothers, which does kind of technically give Zixuan and in even though it doesn't make the idea of speaking to Nie Mingjue any less terrifying.
I don't have very much more plot for this but please just imagine Nie Mingjue's utter bafflement at receiving a letter from Jin Zixuan that basically says "Hello, senior da-ge. I have recently gained the title of da-ge myself. Unfortunately I have no training or prior experience in the art of da-ge-ing and I am Terrified of screwing this up. Any advice you could offer on how to be da-ge would be deeply appreciated." and then somehow through the course of helping Zixuan figure out how to bond with his brother (and through Jin Guangyao suffering through Jin Zixuan's attemps for them to bond) Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao end up fixing their shit.

More from my bb!
“Yinyin is better at a chang gun,” Wei Wuxian said, and Jiang Wanyin glared at him. Lan Qiren gave him an appraising look. “You have used a chang gun before?” Jiang Wanyin nodded even though he looked unsure. “He used to compete in gunshu!” “Wei Wuxian,” Jiang Wanyin hissed. “We have a gun,” Lan Qiren said and went to the backroom. While he was in there, Nie Huaisang watched his brother and Jiang Yanli go through several forms with the battle axe. It flowed just as well as when they were in the gym – even though that axe was larger than she was. There was art to it. He wondered if she had competed as well. Lan Qiren emerged with a staff and handed it to Jiang Wanyin before stepping back to watch. Jiang Wanyin blushed. “Do a form,” Wei Wuxian urged. Jiang Wanyin nodded before testing the weight of the gun, balancing it and twirling it. He then jumped, twirled the staff, and landed in a crouch. “Another!” Wei Wuxian enthused. “It’s been too long,” Jiang Wanyin muttered, standing again. “Do it anyway,” Lan Qiren said. “A gun might be more efficient for you than a crossbow. If you can use one but not the other, use the one that will save your life.” Jiang Wanyin blushed and looked at Nie Huaisang, who gave him an encouraging look. Jiang Wanyin nodded and sank into a crouch before he did the most complicated routine Nie Huaisang had ever seen. It was like a dance. There were jumps and crouches and a fucking flip all while jabbing and twirling the staff. It was sexy. The competence. The economy of movement. The biceps flexing and the cords on his arms… Delicious. “Told you,” Wei Wuxian said smugly. Jiang Wanyin breathed heavily and was slightly flushed. Nie Huaisang couldn’t tell if it was from performing in front of people or the exertion from the performance itself. “That was beautiful,” Nie Huaisang enthused. “A bit rusty,” Lan Qiren said with a nod, “but it’s something we can work with. Better than learning to use a crossbow from scratch.” Jiang Wanyin nodded, looking down. “I thought the flip was inspired,” Nie Huaisang added with a smile. Lan Qiren gave him an irritated look.

Fic Finder
~*~
1. sorry if this is a repeat. I had an error when submitting. I can't find this though I swear I bookmarked it. WWX is fatally injured walking back from Caiyi, LWJ locks himself in the Jingshi and all anyone can hear is DEEPLY unsettling guqin music. When it stops LXC goes in braced for the worst, then finds WWX alive. LWJ had invented a new kind of demonic cultivation to revive WWX.
FOUND! a song you've never heard by arahir (g, 4k, WangXian, Canon compliant, Presumed dead, Angst with a happy ending, podfic read by raitala)
~*~
2. Do you know the fic where wwx goes to gusu and the lans give him a white stone to use to cleanse him of demonic cultivation? Then the stone begins to turn black? I think there might be the reveal that wwx has no golden core? I'm sorry I can't remember anything more!
FOUND! 🧡a stone to break your soul, a song to save it by rikke ( M, 180k, WangXian, Arranged marriage, Canon Divergence, Hurt/comfort, Light angst, Canon typical violence)
~*~
3. Hello! I'm looking for a fic I read at least a year ago, maybe more, where wwx is in really bad shape when he takes the wens to the burial mounds - like combo chronic pain, starvation, depression/ptsd I think - and it's like "damn it's a good thing wen qing and her family are healers". Unfortunately I remember nothing else about the story except the wens making sure he gets as much sunshine as he can in the bm and forcing him to rest a lot. Thank you, even if you can't help! I know it's not much to go on.
Hello! I'm number 3 on post/683884721300717568! (Hopefully I did that right) Unfortunately the suggested fic "I had to abandon myself" isn't the one I was thinking of, though it WAS extremely lovely and scratched an itch for me. I really appreciate everything you do! Thank you very much!
NOT FOUND! i had to abandon myself (you took all of me) by justdoityoufucker (E, 27k, WIP, WangXian, Canon Divergence, Burial Mounds Settlement Days, Not Jiang Clan Friendly, Novel Characterizations, LWJ fucks a core into WWX)
~*~
4. Hey!! Everything y’all do is wonderful and i appreciate all the hard work you put in! I was wondering if y’all could help me find a fic. Lan Wangji is a single dad to Wen Yuan. He meets Wei Ying for the first time in a store where Wwx already knows Wen Yuan and he says wen yuan saved his life because he’d been in a really rough patch and jiang yanli or someone would send him pics of wen yuan to cheer him up. he keeps calling wen yuan a baby and lwj keeps correcting him bc he’s one so no longer a baby. that’s al i remember thanks for the help!
FOUND? box your errors by mellowflicker (G, 42k, wangxian, modern, single dad LWJ, domestic fluff, family issues, slow burn, kid fic, hurt/comfort, pining)
~*~
5. hi! ummm I´m looking for an omega verse fanfic I last saw on ao3 I think. Where Wei Ying´s ghost protects Lan Zhan from his punishment(lashes) and Lan Zhan gets expelled from the clan and goes to live in the burial mounds with A-Yuan, and i think Wei Ying is a Yiling local god or something
FOUND? Of Destruction and Rebirth by demoniqt (M, 88k, wangxian, JYL/JZX, major character death, rape/non-con, underage, graphic depictions of violence, canon divergence,Slow Burn, Canonical Character Death, GodWWX, God & Goddesses au, BAMF WWX, Grieving LWJ, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, JC & WWX Reconciliation, Rabbits, Fix-It, Attempted Sexual Assault, Attempted Rape/Non-Con, Blood and Gore, Castration, Lots of it, repeatedly, Punishment, Hell)
~*~
6. Hi - I thought I had this one bookmarked, but can’t find it! Canon divergent- WWX and LWJ don’t meet at Cloud Recesses, but LWJ travels a lot and comes to Yiling when WWX is at the Burial Mounds with the Wens and they meet and fall into an affair. Kind of a sugar baby thing. Includes art by the author. @sam-watchingtv
FOUND! Awaiting Your Return by Karmiya (E, 118k, wangxian, canon divergence, burial mounds settlement days, found family, age difference, discussion of childhood abuse, WIP)

7. hey to the new mod!!! (Hello~ Mod C) as always thank you all for doing this! for the next fic finder there's a fic where the lans as a whole get drunk like it was a planned thing by the jins some fruity tasting thing the lan camp thought was tea and then a drunk LWJ ends up in WWX room who i think was injured b4 already. anyway i remember there was crying from wwx and misunderstanding and i think not sure a golden core reveal (I'm pretty sure this is about the same fic I accidentally deleted a previous ask about 🥲 - Mod C)
FOUND? 8. Hello, I'm looking for a fic and I hope this is where I ask.  It's a modern AU, I think it's set when wangxian are in high school but it might be earlier.  I remember that lxc and lwj are living with their parents, the parents are happy together.  It's a series I think? One of the fics is lwj and lxc retaliating against each other with petty pranks, like lwj uses up all of lxc's favorite tea and lxc replacing all of lwj's socks with cutsey cartoon socks.  Please help!
FOUND? MDZS modern AU Series by Aki_no_hikari (G, 13k, WangXian, Modern AU, Birthday Fluff, Sleepovers, Friendship, Family Feels, Family Fluff, Brotherly Bonding, bit OOC, Pining, One-Sided Attraction, or so lwj thinks)
FOUND? A sip of vinegar by Aki_no_hikari (G, 1k, wangxian, modern, pining, one-sided attraction, or so LWJ thinks)
~*~
9. Hi! Very new here and am not sure if the format. Please feel free to sternly tell me if I'm doing something wrong! C: I'm looking for a fic where wwx is kind of an empress (not 100% sure). I just remember this one scene where jgy (who I think is married to lxc) waits outside wwx palace early, knowing wwx doesn't get up early, to implicare him and make everyone think wwx is mistreating him. Thank you for your awesome recs, also!
FOUND? true gold fears no fire by defractum (nyargles) (M, 52k, wangxian, royalty au, historical au, arranged marriage, identity porn, emperor LWJ, empress WWX, pining, misunderstandings, eventual happy ending, WIP) description doesn't quite match, it's Su She lying in wait in ch 10 not JGY, but Su She is definitely acting on JGY's behalf so idk maybe
FOUND? Bound Only by the Sea by levament (E, 271k, wangxian, royalty au, ABO, politics, hurt/comfort, mpreg, light angst w/ happy ending, cinderella fusion-ish, implied/referenced child abuse, WIP)
~*~
10. Hi! I'm looking for a fic where Wei Wuxian has to play dead during the sun shot campaign and he gets kicked down stairs by Wen Ruohan in front of Lan Zhan and Jiang Cheng and Lan Zhan kisses Wei Ying once he finds out he's alive. I also remember that there was no Yiling Patriarch in this Fic. @bunnylover24
FOUND? the universe would turn to a mighty stranger by RavenclawLoki (T, 11k, WangXian, Angst, Eventual Fluff, First Kiss, Canon Divergence, Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies, Set during ep 12) It's the indoctrination camp and Wen Chao rather than the sunshot campaign and WRH though

11. Hi! Hope you are doing well~ I would like to ask for your help to find a fic, in it, MXY finds he has a little brother, who happens to be WWX reincarnated, their mom actually calls him Mo Ying, but with a different character, and there is kind of a romance betweem MXY/XY. Thank you!!

12. Hello! I am looking for a fanfic I read a while ago. It's a time travel fanfic, in which modern wwx! Times travel back to the past to help yllz!wwx? Something like that, I remember him being able to time travel because of this book that was given to him by baoshen sanren. I don't know if the fic was deleted or I just can't find it:(
Hello! I Am number 12 in the fix finder and unfortunately it is not ' Crazy Little Thing Called Time by kippalittlefox ' :( I am afraid the fic might have been deleted.
For #12! It's definitely the Across Years series with the sequel "I am Loved" by yareyarejojosan. Unfortunately I believe they deleted their whole account

14. Hello Mods~~ I have a fic I’ve been trying to find but can’t :’( The fic is one where XuanLi, Jiang Cheng, Jin Ling, Lan Wangji and I think Nielan (maybe Nie Huaisang too?) are immortal and live on a island and Wei Wuxian was also immortal but he gave it up to save Jin Ling and later on reincarnated as A-Yuan’s adopted father and A-Yuan, Lan Jingyi and I think Ouyang Zizhen but I could be wrong, all die in a cave while on a field trip but wake up and find out they’re immortal now too, kinda like that old guards movie. Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng I think are sent to retrieve them and Wei Wuxian shows up at the site where his kid went missing and runs into Lan Wangji but doesn’t remember him or his previous life. I remember Wei Wuxian doing some kind of array to save Jin Ling and Meng Yao I think stole it and used it to save himself by killing Nie Mingjue? and a secret basement/safe that was being kept closed by an array Wei Wuxian created. Also the junior quartet sneaking off the island while everyone was sleeping…Thank you ~^_^~
FOUND! 🧡The World We Made by updatebug (T, 80k, WangXian, The Old Guard fusion, Immortals, Immortal LWJ, Angst with a Happy Ending, Reincarnation, Modern AU, The Old Guard AU, Temporary Character Death)

15. hello! i love your blog :) im looking for a wangxian fic, pretty sure it was a wip, rated E, and an AU of howl's moving castle with lwj as sophie and wwx as howl? i remember the first chapter had lwj meeting with lxc during a festival, but there was a disconnect between them bc they hadn't spoken in so long. thank you!

16. Hi! I hope you can help. I'm trying to find a fic that I only remember vague bits of, but maybe someone will know it. All I can remember is that WWX was at Burial Mounds and LWJ, Nie HuaiSang, and Jiang Cheng were living there too and everyone thought he had a harem. WWX and NHS were writing and illustrating dirty books and selling them pretty much and LWJ was super jealous. Thanks!
FOUND! The Yiling Patriarch's Harem Drama by nirejseki (Not Rated, 3k, WangXian, Crack, Accidental Harem)
NOT FOUND! Come From My Inkstone by magicgenetek (M, 150k, WIP, WangXianSangNing, Crack treated seriously, Canon Divergence, Slow burn, Polyamory)

17. I'm not sure if I'm doing this right(apologies if it isn't) but I'm looking for a fic where wei ying ends up in ghost city and ended up being adopted by hualian as their little brother. Wei ying also becomes a calamity with a title of something knowing dreams. He later on timetravels back to gusu study days where only wangxian is aware that they have timetraveled. Theres also a scene where wei ying basically corrects lan qiran during class and ends up teaching the class for a bit before getting kicked out.
~*~
18. Could I maybe ask for help finding a fic? I'm fairly sure it was multi chaptered and complete. Madame yu was secretly a concubine of jin guangshan's before she married jiang fengmian. I think jiang fengmian couldn't sire children? And jiang yanli and jiang Cheng were both actually jin guangshan's though I think only madame yu knew. It comes out near the end I think. And madame yu becomes jin guangshan's concubine again and both jiang kids become servants I think? And madame yu might lose her arms maybe??? That's all I can remember thank you so much!
FOUND! Pretty sure this one is OOC! by A_flower_in_the_snow (T, 106k, wangxian, time travel fix-it, ooc LWJ, not Jiang friendly, protective LWJ, possessive LWJ, hurt WWX, rogue cultivator WWX, temporary amnesia, dark JYL)
~*~
19. Hi! I've been looking for a fic from a while ago; its a completed fic, where WWX joins as a first responder/fire fighter. NMJ is the chief, and LWJ is one of the best medics. A couple of scenes I remember are WWX descending off a cliff to rescue YZY from a car, LWJ trying to protect A-Yuan during a tsunami, a traffic light issue causing LWJ to hit a car in an intersection with his ambulance, JGS causing issues with equipment that almost cost JZX his arm? I've tried filtering for firefighters, and natural disasters, and even modern aus over 100k, but it seems to have vanished! @rebeccabobecca
FOUND! 🧡 Like a House on Fire by KouriArashi (T, 82k, WangXian, Modern au, Paramedics, Firefighters, Light angst, Mutual pining, Kid fic, Past drug use, Past child abuse, Families of choice, Domestic fluff)
~*~
20. Hi do you guys know a fic that was based on that viral Reddit post where op was concerned because he thought he was homophobic because he hated when his roommate brought home guys to fuck ? The one where it turned out he wasn’t homophobic but jealous? I'm like 95% sure I've read a wangxian fic with this prompt but i cant find it! Thanks so much! @necroissants

Just finished twelve moons and a fortnight. It took almost a week and a lot of emotions. Beware of spoilers!! This is essentially a live blogging of it
I AM BACK ! and more prepared to read this than ever. I think I went long enough that I only remember 3 or 4 major bits from this (meishan yu, the amalgamation of all the dead from lotus pier before the sunshot campaign began and wei ying seeing them as acting sect leader, lxc healing a-Qing [which still hurts my soul,,,,its taking from. His life force :((] and if im not wrong, copious letters)
The rest though may be the same as if I was to Iread it for the first time and im looking forward to it.
I have my notes app on the side while I read this bc I am a serial binge reader and need sth to hold onto my thoughts before j forget them, it has happened way too many times ans I end an incoherent mess at every fix when this happens. BUT!! I want to really show how much I love this and I like being detailed. So if this end up crossing the character limit i am not sorry.
Buckle up for the torrent of enthusiasm bc
Here we go !
"crash of someone falling headlong into his room and stumbling over Suibian; he left his sword on the floor with the all the rest of his belongings, which proceed to trip up his mysterious guest three more times before he finally falls against Wei Wuxian’s bed" the mental image here is so funny twin jade of lan sect, stoic man tripping over a sword qjfjskfks aahh but wangxian are so adorable
"he and Wei Wuxian once spent a whole day trying to see which of them could best imitate the contemptuous flapping of Madam Yu’s skirts while Jiang Yanli laughed at them from her desk, only to be scolded and sent to bed early by Jiang Fengmian for skipping their meditation hour. " am I going to end up crying during work hours? Lets hope not, though I won't be surprised if so. Memories of the siblings Yunmeng days always make me emo
"Who’s going to teach him about romance if not Zizhen?”
“I always thought it would be Jin Guangyao.”
>emotional damage meme starts playing in the background of my head<
" I could have perished at your hands, or Wen Ning’s at your command, and still kissed your fingers on Chenqing as I died. " thats a raw fucking line op holy fuck
DASHIXONG 😭😭😭
Jiang cheng gave him Yanli's clarity bell i -🥺 and ofc he is allergic to emotional convos and tells him to shut up ajfjjwgj
"But—Zhenhong, that was Uncle Jiang’s throne, and Madam Yu’s, and—”
Zhenhong blinks—half out of astonishment and half in what looks like understanding, though Wei Wuxian can’t imagine what there is to understand"
*inhale * FUCK Its a trying effort here to keep my eyes dry I keep tearing up every 5 minutes
Tumblr media
"do you think Jiang-zongzhu and Yu-furen could have stood it?”
“I—”
“And it was not the idea of a supervisory office that made her attack that Wang woman, either.”
“Wh-What?”
“You were hers , da-shixiong. ”
This entire conversation has made me scream inside my head and brought a raging melancholy I stopped breathing for a second.
"What will a mother not say out of worry, when she fears for the lives of her children?” barks the deputy. “Mine has said worse, I assure you! She could have kept you with her to fight, she knew your brother would meet Jiang-zongzhu and Jiang-guniang within hours of his departure—there was no need for you to go with him! She sent you away for your sake just as much as for Sect Leader’s, and I wonder how with your wit you took so long to realize it!”

The art at the end of  chapter 3 is adorable!!!
"Everything was peaceful and sedate and perfect, and then Lan Jingyi grew old enough to venture out of his parents’ quarters by himself.
The Cloud Recesses never recovered. "
Every day I am reminded of my love for lan jingyi <3 (hence the username :3)
Reading Ouyang Zizhen's letter and he is so sweet. I love he
"I think Xian-gege knows,” Sizhui says at last. “He was thinking about it before Hanguang-jun and Zewu-jun took him to the discussion conference, I could tell. But when I found him at the Guanyin temple, he looked like—like everything made sense. Like he understood something he didn’t before.”
He knows but I don't know if the boys are ready for this knowledge,,,
JIN LING!!!! I am delighted at the junior quartets friendship. Also remembered both the clothes and what happens when a-qung wakes up and im looking forward to it.
"His stomach growls, and he claps his hands over it in embarrassment before Hanguang-jun produces a second bowl and sets them both down on the table along with two pairs of chopsticks. “You too, Jingyi. Eat.” 1. I KNOW its because of wei yings letter. 2. Dad wangji!!!! My heart is warm, my crops are watered and my skin is clear
"for upon receiving your last letter I thought of how ill he was when I found him hidden in the Demon-Slaughtering Cave, and how long it took him to reach a normal height for his age—his growth was stunted for years after that, and nearly prevented his forming a golden core. Rest assured that I will make sure he is fed and well-rested, Wei Ying, for your sake and mine as well as his—he will eat at least once a day with me in the jingshi from now on, unless he grows so tired of it that even his filial tenderness can no longer bear my company. "
This>🥺< is literally my face right now. I may look incredibly ugly but I 🥺😭😭 AHH *Clutches hand at chest* my heart
Tumblr media
" I was so happy that it felt as if my heart would break"
I am going to save this for days where I don't have the words. I have felt it before but never had such clear words for it and hhhhh your writing is incredible
"But for now all I can do is pray that Lotus Pier does not go the same way as everything else I have ever tried to protect" actually I think you just like making us sad
The way you capture every characters voice and essence through the letters (in general too but thus isn't abt that) is so good and I am filled with awe and an urge to re read everything though I only have the first volume at home
"kind as well as beautiful, so if someday you wish to marry—you might as well begin here as somewhere else, right? You’ll find someone to match you, sweetheart, someone as brave and good and wise as you are" I am going to go INSANE, xie lian grant me patience for this foolish man. And well. Lwj WILL indeed marry someone from Yunmeng. It IS you wei ying you fool
"“If his first set of standards was because he thought shijie was the best girl in the world, and he wanted a wife like her,” he says at last, “then—Zhenhong, doesn’t it make sense that this set of standards describes someone he already knows? And it’s not Yu-furen, because Yu-furen never—” Wait WAIT IS IT WEN QING
"She sits there for nearly an hour gazing at him in confusion and a little pity, because he wears the same lost look on his face as Daozhang did, right down to the melancholy turn of his mouth and the swollen eyelids that tell of recent tears (because her Daozhang used to cry, and cry often, even though he no longer had eyes to cry with). " EMOTIONAL DAMAGE part 2, electric boogaloo
Lan xichen makes my heart hurt in 7 different ways, 🌊🐴man
Tumblr media
(I can now add pics bc tumblr :D )
"Jin Ling worries his lip for a moment and then runs to join them, propriety be hanged. They’ve only got two weeks, and it’s not as if anyone here is going to tell tales to his Uncle Jiang. He flings his arms around Jingyi, and then Sizhui, and then around all three of them before one of the older Jin disciples clears her throat. " they own my heart, im telling u
Drunk jiang cheng made me sad again :( he does deserve to be happy !!! 😭😭😭
Oh boys,,,,, if it is who I think it is u can't help Jiang cheng. The person may be dead already
“He’ll have to visit me every month,” he mutters at last. “You—you have to share him, okay? He’s mine too.”
“Of course he’s yours too,” Sizhui soothes him, sounding suspiciously near tears himself. “You’re his nephew, he’s never going to leave you. Don’t cry, A-Ling. Don’t cry.”
Each word brings me closer to crying aaaaaaahhhh
Lan wangji's letters to wei ying are going to make me swoon oh my goodness. They're in LOVE ND THEY ARE SOULMATES
Wait wei ying is chronically ill and didn't tell anyone? And he ???? Has been since he was summoned????????? and he didn't ask for help??? What is Going On
...And a little bun has been adopted, my heart really cannot take this
"So she smothered,” says Wei Wuxian, stricken. Jin Guangyao, Jin Guangyao—why does it always come back to you in the end? Is there anyone you did not hurt? Nie Mingjue, my shijie, Jin Zixuan, Jin Ling, Lan Xichen, Lan Zhan—even this poor woman, A-Xin, who died and left her son motherless just as your mother left you." hhhhhhhhh
I love that they'll build a women's shelter, and the soul calming ceremonies written a little while back
"Miles away, in the Cloud Recesses, the third disciple class (including a certain young romantic from Ouyang, who is still a year behind his three best friends in the second group) gets a once-in-a-lifetime glimpse of Hanguang-jun blushing over his morning letters and kissing the pages they were written on until his lips go numb.
(Lan Qiren doesn’t break his jade token. He doesn’t. ) " ah wht a blessed sight, i wish I was there
Junior break!!!! !They're adorable. No I will not stop saying that. Them having a picnic and letter meeting at the rabbit field os the cutest thing aaa♡♡♡♡♡♡
"As it happens, however, his lunch isn’t the only thing waiting in his rooms.
A second plate has been laid out across from his, and two cups of tea are already steaming beside the incense burner—and someone is sitting in Lan Wangji’s place at the table, dressed in mourning white without a single ornament in his hair or even a sword at his waist. The man almost looks like a ghost of Lan Wangji’s younger self, in the days after Wei Ying’s death at the Nightless City and his own forced confinement away from the rest of the clan—but then he turns his face towards the door, and Lan Wangji nearly bites his tongue at the realization that it isn’t a ghost at all.
“Xiongzhang,” he chokes, nearly weeping in relief as his brother’s thin hands rise to clasp his own. “It’s good to see you.”
Screaming and nearly crying again </3
"at last my brother lost his patience and silenced him so forcefully that even the two disciples standing near him found themselves unable to talk for the next twenty minutes. Jingyi was in the room at the time, and he has still not recovered from the shock; Sizhui, on the other hand, is steadfastly refusing to believe that it ever happened at all. "Holy shit I love this. Lxc hath become a parent
I really like Healer Pan
Wei yings more serious letters always leave me feeling stricken with sorrow and yet I keep on hoping hr will realize. He does have a home. With lwj as well as lotus pier
Chapter 11 and holy shit you were not kidding Hanguang-jun is SMOOTH!!!!!
"Don’t let him shirk his duties, or I’ll tell Li Shuai about the time you tried to propose to her with Farmer Tang’s ghoul when we were eighteen.
    In distress, as usual,
        Sect Leader Jiang Wanyin. "
I cannot stop laughing ajfjskfjsjgj
"That settles it, my Lan Zhan. I’ll make you all the soup and seed-cake you want, but stop asking for the porridge.”
“Mn, all right.”
His face is pink again, and this time he’s not sure it’s only because of the congee. " they are SO domestic and this is too cute
“You gave up your life for our son,” Lan Wangji tells him, pressing his chin to the top of Wei Ying’s head. “I could do no less.”
Oh my god. .. oh my god
Story time with wen ning! :D
And the aforementioned trunk of clothes appears!
LMAO HOLY SHIT I FRGIT ABT THE RULE WALL  ! lxc is wonderful
"The elders used that one on my younger brother sixteen years ago,” Lan Xichen says grimly. “He was judged for injuring thirty-three clan members after Wei Wuxian was killed, and this was the punishment. But they knew I would speak out against such a harsh sentence, even if it meant I had to take Wangji and A-Yuan and secede from the clan—so they drugged me the night before the trial to ensure that I would sleep straight through it, and then they decided Wangji’s fate in my absence and held me down on the floor in the hanshi with all their spiritual power so that I could not interfere until the beating was over.” my reaction is the same as the kids,,, DAMN
Also no wonder they danced around that fire they were getting rid of some stuff
“I’ve also defaced the wall of sect rules,” Lan Xichen says cheerfully. “And now there are only about two thousand laws left, so perhaps you and the council would like to spend a few hours contemplating the alterations in the morning.” this may  be one of my favorite chapters i can't stop re reading it and am v much invested here
"It occurs to him then that despite the presence of the disciples—all of whom, if he remembers correctly, are still younger than eighteen—the most helpless cultivator among them might as well be himself." HHH HOLY SHIT
"don’t you dare write me directly unless it’s an emergency, you hear? I might have a dying brother on my hands, to say nothing of a twice-orphaned baby, because if Wei Wuxian decides to leave us all because of a night-hunt I doubt Hanguang-jun will wait even a day before following him. Damn them both, to hell and back—I’ll drag them both back to life and murder them again if they even think about it, but I suppose the healers and I ought to try saving them first. " Iam going to go feral actually. I'll go outside and scream towards a lake,  theres one like a bus ride away, I will go insane. I am having si many emotions i can't name em
I may not have much to say at the hunt this time bc im very drawn in and it must me speechless. But the feeling translated and carried over si well. The pacing incredible
"He pauses, wondering what else might be left to ask, and then—
Was it Yu Ziyuan?
The beast responds to that question by reaching forward and striking him across the face. It doesn’t seem angry, exactly, but the unspoken reply was very clearly a negative one; the cloud of resentful energy looks offended on Madam Yu’s behalf" it has been months, but this scene and what followed throughout the chapter have  remained clear in my head ever since the first time reading this. Legitimately unforgettable
"The ghosts come to a halt, then, standing right in front of Lan Wangji’s ward with pensive looks on their faces. Some have clear death-wounds in their chests, and one of the boys wears a gown covered with dull black blood from the cruel gash in his throat—but all of them are looking straight at Li Shuai, and their lips shape her name with open wistfulness; some of the older ones call her A-Shuai, and the children call her Li-shijie, and then they nod once in Lan Wangji’s direction before stepping closer to the ward and disappearing into it.
He feels their spiritual energy pouring into the seals before he sees it in the ward, reeling back at the sudden shock of ninety-one ghostly golden cores taking up arms beside his—ready to defend their sect in death as they could not do in life, and then he finally understands why the land-eater went unnoticed for so long. The ghosts must have been suppressing it until its power surpassed theirs, and then they sought out Wang Hai for help when they could do nothing more—but for them to have taken shape like this, in something resembling their living selves even though their bodies must long since have rotted away—it should have been beyond them to do such a thing, unless…"
I am both in awe and full of wonder and feel as though I'm there. Words do not begin to describe the intense experience it is to read this
Now to the note on ch 18": If you're reading this as a completed work, stop here and take a break if you need one! The night-hunt arc is officially complete, and the recovery arc picks up in chapter 19. :)" ill take your advice this once bc I have to sleep at a reasonable hour
Started chapter 19 and I am shaking. Oh dear
"He took wei ying from him" NOOOO MY HEART
"“Oh, he’ll like it well enough,” the other man grumbles, shoving the finished dinner tray towards him and then pushing him out the door. “Make sure you eat some of it, too, or I’ll have two sick people on my hands instead of one.” as always showing care with food <3
Lan Xichen’s letter to mingjue is utterly heartbreaking, and so is the whipping, no matter how many times I've read it
LXC joins the shipping !!!!
'"Wei Wuxian finds his gaze fixed on his brother’s left hand, and on the faint sparks rising from the serpent-shaped ring glinting there.
“Di-di,” he gasps, trying to fight against the fire in his knees as Jiang Cheng pushes Lan Zhan away and attempts to lift him up. “Don’t whip me anymore, I didn’t mean to—I won’t make trouble for our family again, not as long as I live, please— ”
An utterly stricken look crosses Jiang Cheng’s face, and he stuffs his hand into the pocket of his robes"
FUCK!!! AAHHHHH!!!!! MY HEART!!
Nie huaisang having a tiger is one of the best things in my life now. Good for him good for him
"Wouldn’t you have learned about it anyway, Nie-xiong? Wei Wuxian thinks wryly, as they walk over the high stone gate that separates the training field from the living quarters. You managed to find out the truth about Jin Guangyao and Qin Su, when the only person alive who knew aside from Lianfang-zun was Qin-furen’s maid Bicao. Is there a secret under the sun that you couldn’t bring to the light if you waited for it long enough?"
Okay tbh you'd find me hard pressed to say a mdzs character im not fond of, and ofc the Nies are also some of my favorites. And thi makes me think so much. Because after all is said nd done, after nhs exposed jgy and his schemes and wit came to light, we do know he is clever but he is then also under constant suspicion and scrutiny. And yes he may scheme but didn't he only do tht to avenge his brother? I do believe he is done with it. And yet I also believe he is also very up to date with news and gossip and going-ons. It brings me to mind, how much does he know, and how much of that weighs on him? He doesn't have much family left, most of his friends from his youth have grown apart or may have died at the war. Anyways im very emotional about nie huaisang
''realizes exactly why Nie Huaisang called out in fear on that night in the Guanyin temple, and why he had refused to let Jin Guangyao leave the place alive.
The very last mystery, a voice in the back of his mind seems to say, solved by the simple fact that Nie Huaisang’s loyalty ran deeper than any of us ever knew. "
Many scenes here just make me go "Holy fucking shit man"
"the knowledge that Jin Guangyao’s death was an act of love as well as an act of hate,"
Tumblr media
"As for the kisses you owe to me, my heart, you must tell our little son that he is lucky to be receiving them in my place. Such tender gifts are rarer than gold and dearer than the stars, and I will count myself blessed if you deign to give me another. "💘💘💙💙💙💙
"I was used to kissing you whenever the mood struck me while we were still together in Yunmeng, after all, and breaking the habit has been most difficult. I even kissed A-Hong once without thinking about it, and this morning I almost kissed the top of Nie-xiong’s head after breakfast. He took it as a slight to his small stature, though, so he chased me all the way back to my rooms and told me he would feed me to A-Yong if I dared to do it again. " screaming again. They're so married already. And nhs forehead kiss abjdsr that's adorably funny
"Shufu always suspected them, Lan Wangji repeats to himself. The next several years—
“Xiongzhang,” he ventures at last. “The trial they tampered with, was it—”
WAS IT HIS MOM'S???????
[lxc, on the podium: and in conclusion, i will make a-qing a wonderful father and will protect her all my life
lwj, supportive but confused: i agree, brother, but where are the elders?
lxc: in a better place now. sit down immediately]
Some of ur notes are really making me laugh a lot akxksfkskf
Nie Shiyong!!!!! I totally forgot abt her!!! One line and I already lover her
"Nie Huaisang closes his eyes and puts his head in his hands.
“When he brought you back, he brought you back wrong. ”
I, too, am putting my head on my hands. Jesus
Tumblr media
“to know the beast is to know the girl, and to know the girl is to know the beast. As a maiden, she is bloodthirstier than most men, and as a tigress, she is gentler than even a house cat." Tbh that's a mood
Ah yes, the qinghe robes
“I was promised a hundred, in your letter,” he whispers, lifting his beloved’s arm again and kissing the heart of his palm. “Will you deny me, my heart?”  this was so sweet !!!!!!
The family having a meal together 😭😭😭💙💙💙 and the yearning keeps strong ah Lan zhan hang in there
"Xiao-Yu refuses to take the bee back as they walk to the the city gates to summon their carriage, content merely to watch Sizhui pretend to play with it until the black-painted conveyance comes rolling up the road—which is when the baby falls fast asleep, right before A-Yuan tucks the doll safely under his arm and sits on the bench opposite him to stare in utter adoration" my heart is full and soft. This is absolutely precious
:And Lan Wangji obeys and lowers his head, nearly sobbing aloud as Wei Ying fastens the necklace just below the fall of his hair—because it feels like a moment of marriage, somehow, as if this oath to return to his heart was the first of their bows before heaven." I should really stop (mentally) screaming everytime something gay or cute or emotional happens, I already get daily headaches. But alas I carry much emotion with me
Yes it was extremely gay and extremely tender and I love them. Jiang cheng pls stop being an angry grape and jealous brother wwx won't abandon you after getting married
Holy shit was madam yu betrothed to zhao zhuliu?
OH SHIT
Oh S H I T this is heartbreaking
Damn the amount of harrowing family secrets for each clan ,,,, p a i n
"But the Unclean Realm was only once a second home, because it ceased to be so, after Mingjue was dead. Lan Xichen has not held the place of the sect master's sworn brother for many years, firstly because his sworn brother was gone, and then because he failed him and Huaisang so completely that he did not notice Mingjue’s murder taking place right before his eyes.
I promised you I would take care of Xiao-Sang, "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH😭😭😭😭
"My heart was broken the day the council refused to use Inquiry as testament for your mother’s trial, and there was nothing I could do "
IT WAS THE TAMPERED TRIAL WASNT IT???? Also, hhhhhhhhhhhhh big oof for lqr. My heart goes out to him too
"To this day, Wangji insists that there is no need for thanks or contrition between sweethearts.
But in Lan Xichen’s opinion, the old saying holds even truer for brothers, and it always will." This while part,,, i keep saying it but its because it's true. The way emotion is captured through the words is breathtaking and leaves me bereft of words and full of feeling
"Was that at the discussion conference when you woke up with a giant boil on your forehead and screamed so loudly that you woke me up?” Jiang Cheng snorts, swallowing his mouthful of pastry. “Let that morning be forever enshrined in the memory of my disciples, who jumped out of bed and got into emergency formation for a hunt before they figured out what all the wailing was.”
“You’re heartless, Jiang-xiong.”
“But not pimply, though.”
This is amazing ajckskkckskfkej discussing skin care has never been more entertaining
"“Don’t be mean!” Lan Xichen cries, pulling him into his arms. Wei Wuxian feels his mouth drop open, completely forgetting to struggle even when the older man tucks him close to his chest like a mother holding a child that matched her in height, and then he looks toward Jiang Cheng in sheer confusion when Lan Xichen points an accusing finger at him. “Wangji’s head is empty of everything but Wei-gongzi, too. You mustn’t say such things!”
“I know that, Zewu-jun.”
“We all knew that,”
This is delightful and I cannot stop laughing
The lightheartedness of this just,  it makes me very happy. Them re doing the list too !!! Amazing,  *insert lady gaga meme here*
Ofc , all in agreement Lan Xichen is incredibly beautiful. No arguments to be made
Ans lmao the rankings andjmakdka
"ensuring that the walking talismans are fully replenished (so that it can follow Wei Wuxian on its own, rather than either of them having to carry it) and that it is stuffed with plenty of soft pillows and blankets, not to mention their son’s beloved bee. " I keep trying to picture this but I cant. Does it Just float around him? Slide through the floor? I have no clue and will remain figuring this out
HHHH the WEDDING ROBES!!! lovely mental image,  we have been blessed on this fine day
"Lan Wangji found himself wondering where she procured it before noting that the dress was made in the light, layered style of Yunmeng and Baling Ouyang.
Ouyang Zizhen, then, he thinks, hiding a smile at the thought of it. Perhaps he even chose this one for her to wear tonight."
Once again: they're the cutest
HOLY SHIT WHAT A START TO THE BANQUET
"At least—at least it wasn’t the fire.”
Be right back, im gonna go stare at a wall until I get myself together
Also Jin guangshan,,, he can meet me in the fucking pit
"Lan Zhan!” he hears Wei Ying shriek, just as he takes a sip to ensure that the drink will suit his zhiji’s tastes. “That’s honey mead from Baling, not fruit tea! Spit it out, now, or you’ll–”
And then the world goes dark around him, like the feeling of falling into a pleasant dream, right before he wakes up in Wei Ying’s bed the next morning with no memory of how he got there. " im so ready for shenanigans
OH I WAS JOT WRONG! I was thinking about it, and wwxs pains,  and nearing the end of this chapter I was like,  wait isn't he regaining his scars also? And isn't it the wen brand this time? And it’s was and I was essential surprised pikachu
... but WHY are they appearing? If it due to the ritual? To zidian? A mixture of both or sth else,???
(Both regarding wwx being ill and the corpses in the water) The mystery solving here Is so interesting and *chefs kiss* amazing. I love me a good case solving
Im so confused about the dagger
[Post data- I finished the fic and am no longer confused]
"In which Wei Wuxian finally discovers the truth behind his illness, and the reader learns that stiltonbasket has been lying about the title all along." WHAT
"I heard Shijie calling me,” he whispers, swinging Xiao-Yu up into his arms. “She’s outside all by herself, so we have to go and get her.” oh no just what is happening???
Xiao yu had been saying his a-niang had the knife, and they just said the lining of the robr may have been removed with it. Was Wei ying possessed? And why was he drawn away???
HE *WAS* POSSESSED
I wonder of the ghost was mo xuanyu. "“I think it jumped with me,” he says slowly. “The ghost, I mean. It kept saying it was sorry, and that it wouldn’t have doomed me to death if it knew any better.” you know? Thats my current theory
"but if death occurred, it always came exactly twelve moons and a fortnight after the patient was first healed, though I was never able to determine the reason why before I stopped performing the procedure, even for those whose cores I was certain would be sufficient. "
WHAT?  W H A T?
"And then the book falls open to the very last page, displaying a half-finished, familiar array with a tiny caption written underneath it in red ink.
Yanghua advised me to make a replicable array for the core sacrifice, in case it should be needed again. Despite her urging, however, I only consented to create one for healing with the sacrifice of one’s own golden core, instead of the core of a willing participant.
Wei Wuxian picks the book up and closes it.
I didn’t have a choice, a mournful voice echoes in the back of his mind. I was dying, Young Master Wei. "
HO L Y SHIT MO XUANYU HAD IT
I know he wrote a will, but there are 10 chapters left so this mf better not die
This is so intense I can barely pause to write. Holy shit. Empathy
"The array he constructed was half of Wei Ying’s and partly his own invention, and the rest was taken from his memory of the physician’s journal he read in Qinghe" /oh/
"but Mo Xuanyu was certain that his jindan would be more than sufficient to heal him; as long as the core was not wholly used up," then tge passage makes more sense now. If the core is weaker, they will die after twelve moons and a fortnight. His core wouldn't be enough, especially considering that even though Wei ying nonlinear had one, before that he was a genius and remarkably powerful
A mistake. There was an accident which may have been the cause of it all. Oh my goodness
"Not a mistake, Mo Xuanyu tries to say. It was written in the belief that two golden cores would be enough to heal you, and your jindan was not there!"
I am losing my goddamn mind
“Wei Wuxian doesn’t need your core, Lan Wangji,” Jiang Wanyin rasps. “He needs his jindan. He needs mine.”
I mean,  I was thinking the same but im still very anxious about it...

“Please,” he sobs, knocking his head against the ground until Lan Wangji can hear the sound of it striking the floor. “I have lived in anguish without a jindan, and I have lived for sixteen years without my brother. I know which between the two is worse, and death would be better than knowing that he suffered and died in such a way, because of me. Please, Lang-furen—I know it will be breaking your healing vows, but this is the only way forth, I pray you—”
Yeah alright now im legit crying,,thank goodness I cried yesterday too or id be sobbing rn
Tumblr media
"Brothers, sharing a single core, Lan Wangji thinks dizzily, slumping to the floor. One flesh and two masters of a single jindan, which loves and obeys them both. "
Im speechless once more.
It was a success. I'm so glad. This was a Rollercoaster of emotions
"Rather, he needs what you and Wei-xiong have: a faithful, steady deputy who can handle matters in his stead if necessary, and stand beside him in all things no matter what he must face. Luo Qingyang was once that for Jin Zixuan" MIANMIAN!!!!!!!
Nothing warms my heart more than seeing Jiang cheng and wei wuxian be brothers and being happy
"he is as well and grumpy as ever, which delights Wei Wuxian so much that he pushes him into the lake as a welcome-back present.
Jiang Cheng yanks Wei Wuxian in after him, and it reminds Wei Wuxian so much of the happy winters of his youth that he bursts into tears" now im emotional again, this is making me wanna see my sister 🥺😭💙
FINALLY !!! BETROTHED!!!!! WWX REALIZED HES IN LOVE!!!
"Lan Zhan would probably rather kiss Jiang Cheng than blame Wei Wuxian for any of his troubles."LMAO
"squeezing poor Xiao-Yu like a laundress wringing out a tablecloth." Poor xiao yu skfwkgkskkgkw
"Not yet,” the baby protests, when Wei Wuxian makes note of his observations to Jiang Cheng. “Xiao-Yu is little! Only Papa can say my big name.” PRECIOUS !!! Did u kidnap my donkey andjsj lmao
The junior's shenanigans will never stop being funny. Lan Qing being exasperated and fond of her boys is super relatable too and brought a smile to my face
I am jittery with excitement as Lan zhan goes to wei ying
[Brief trivia note: the Ouyang cultivator who brought Xiao-Yu gifts is his paternal grandfather; Xiao-Yu's birth father is the young master from Baling who challenged LWJ's choice to adopt Xiao-Yu during the discussion conference.] holy FUCK HOW THE TURN TABLES?!!!! AH?!!!! DUDEE
Wen ning 🥺😭😭😭😭pls come back 😭😭
WA IT WHAT???? "Wen Ning drags in a deep, loud breath, crying Jie, Jie, Jie, and takes another staggering step into his sister’s arms. " im going to have to re read the second half of this chapter aren't i
Did Lan xiyan summon wen qing to her body to cure the plague and her baby? Or is it something else? “It was, I think, only out of desperation that Lang Xiyan managed to find a remedy that would cure the blinding distemper.” my mind is running in circles
THE SERVING GIRL?
/oh/ it *is* wen qing. Im-
You really did that holy shit.  I deeply appreciate tge explanation on the author notes and am happy to see i did understand and realize. I'm gonna have to re re read this a third time to see the foreshadowing again bc its immaculate holy shit.  This is so good
"Upon further reflection, perhaps he ought to think about why A-Hong’s words cheer him as they do.
But Jiang Cheng is nothing if not a master of dismissing such matters entirely, so he finishes the rest of his dinner in silence and hurries off to bed. " must all Jiang men be fools when it comes to love?
“Whatever you may wish from me, it is yours already,” Lan Zhan says solemnly. “Our marriage bows have nothing to do with it. Have we not lived as zhangfu and xiang-gong these last thirteen months, my heart?" Im going to get cavities.
The wen siblings arrived to gusu!!!!!! 💙💙💙
"Wei Wuxian slumps back onto the floor like a miserable red pancake as he stares up at the rafters. " I too am crying over wen qing.  Also 'miserable red pancake 'ajfjskfkskkf
"Wei Wuxian obeys with his heart in his throat, and blushes so fiercely at the thought of the day to come that Wen Qing giggles herself into a coughing fit. " 🥺🤣🤣🤣
lmao MIANMIAN! Telljng the "are you in love with maiden Luo? " story ajfjamfkskgkskgi prime material always to poke fun at wangxian
THEYRE MARRIED YOUR HONOR 😭🥺🥺💙💙💙💙🥺🥺🥺🥺💙💙💙💙💙💙
"Mm, I know. It’s the same with A-Hua, even though I didn’t give birth to her. She’s mine, the best of me, and she’s going to have everything she could ever want.”
MY HEART!
[a look into the future at Ouyang Zizhen and A-Qing's wedding day! Much baby fluff, feels, and hijinks to follow. <^-^>] !!!!!! IM EXCITED FOR THIS!!
"for the Cloud Recesses loves its troublemakers dearly, and nobody weeps more bitterly than its master when one is finally married away from the sect. " you keep coming out with Bangers for lines these are so good
Aaahhhh my heart!!!!! A single tear of joy dropped from my face as I finished reading sjskciaufis. This was so good !!!!!!! I mm going to go on and read everything in this series of course.  I hope I wasn't too bothersome with my long ass coment, quotes and all

《 Without Envy 》 storyboard 11 - concubine/sleeper agent!wwx & prince!lwj
Other snippets and storyboards can be found on [Master List]
Lan Wangji knew his Uncle and the imperial court and the elders of the royal family were never going to be okay with him making Wei Wuxian one of his concubines. The servant status is one thing, but that's not the crux of the issue. The issue is that there's already a rumour circulating about how WWX is a wily fox whose sole purpose in life is to seduce and befuddle the prince. Xue Yang: quite a reputation you've cultivated for yourself. WWX: *kuzo's meme*.........ah yes, everything is all coming together now.
Lan Wangji is a smart boy though. He knows how to get what he wants. As Wei Ying inched towards full recovery from his whipping, the autumn hunt is upon them.
The autumn hunt in the royal hunts ground was a competition. Anyone invited could compete if they chose to, and of Lan Wangji's household, Jin Ziyan, Luo Qingyang and himself were in attendance. Mianmian, being his concubine and a woman, had two escorts/chaperones accompanying her for propriety, but flashed him dazzling smiles of gratitude upon her horse.
"I'm very grateful, dianxia, for your allowing this indulgence." "Of course," replied Lan Wangji from his saddle. "My Luo-furen should have what she wants." "Dianxia, ce-wangfu." Qin Su approached them and curtsied in proper form. "I wish you all best of luck in the hunt." Then to Mianmian, she said quietly, "Be careful, Qingyang." Jin Ziyan paid the two women no mind, but Lan Wangji saw the hand Qin Su had clandestinely wrapped around one of Mianmian's booted ankles. Oh...well, this is certainly a positive development.
The rest of the noble women not participating in the hunt rested in their tented pavilions, with Meng Yao as their hostess. They drank tea and ate sweets and enjoyed their free time to themselves. Meng Yao noted Wei Wuxian's absence from Jiang Yanli's side, as did several other noble women, but Jiang Yanli only smiled and said, "A-Xian has been living at my father's manor for several years and is an excellent marksman. Dianxia thought it a waste if he were kept from participating."
The truth of the matter is like this: when Wei Wuxian cheated and lied his way into Jiang-fu, he'd told Jiang Fengmian and his family that he'd lived most of his life by the charity of a hunter's family, and so had trained to hunt game in the wild. After the hunter's family died of some infectious illness that plagued the region, Wei Wuxian had supposed made his way into the city and found employment as a shop boy. He couldn't reveal that he'd been trained in martial arts, but there is no need to hide his skill as an archer. At first, it was so he could use archery as a common interest to get close to Jiang Fengmian's son Jiang Cheng, but Wei Wuxian soon realized that it could also be used as a way for Lan Wangji to cultivate further interest.
"Lan Zhan..." Wei Wuxian stroked the snout of Lan Wangji's beloved ferghana horse and grinned. "You really want me to ride him?" "Mn." "You...won't be mad then, if I win?" Wei Wuxian's grin turned slightly wicked. "If I beat you?" Lan Wangji's brow twitched with interest, "Not at all. That's rather what I'm counting on." "Yeah? And why is that?" "Because while I can claim victory with the sword -" "- Very modest, you." Wei Wuxian teased, grinning, which earned him a subtle little glare. "- amongst my cousins, my marksmanship is not unrivalled. You may have a greater chance of winning with him. Huangxiong promised that whoever wins today's hunt will be granted one wish." A wish? Wei Wuxian mulled over this information. His own mission turned and circled in his mind. If I could but gain access to... ... Of course, Wei Wuxian glanced at the prince and the saw the light in his eyes. Lan Wangji is probably thinking of something entirely different.
And so it was inevitable that went the count of the hunt came in, Wei Wuxian's name was at the top. Lan Qiren's little mustache just about flew off his face the way he scrunched it up in displeasure.
Gentries, nobles, dukes and princes watched with envy and shock as a servant came forth to accept the Emperor's reward.
"Jiang-xiong," Nie Huaisang leaned close to Jiang Cheng while they watched from the sidelines as Wei Wuxian bowed before the Emperor. "Why do you look so smug?" Jiang Cheng played with the end of an arrow with an air of mock innocence, "I don't know what you're talking about?" Nie Huaisang pulled at the leather of his riding attire in discomfort - this was so not his style - and tsked, "I know you, Jiang-xiong, you're not subtle. What did you do?" "I was the one who told Lan Wangi that Wei Wuxian is an excellent archer when I went to visit Hanguang-fu." Nie Huaisang understood instantly, "Oh....oh I see..." "What? Don't judge me! You know what they did to him. String up like some unruly animal and whipped. I never agreed with my mother's plan to send him along with my sister anyway. Wei Wuxian may be lowborn but..." Jiang Cheng scowled. "He's too good for them. For Lan Wangji. He's clearly not going to do right by Wei Wuxian. I won't stand to see a perfectly good man wasted as some prissy prince's concubine instead of being where he could put his real skills to use." "Shhhhh, ancestors, Jiang-xiong, keep your voice down! Words like that are a great dishonor against bixia, you'll lose your head!" Jiang Cheng shrugged.
Xue Yang *at a later times*: so lemme get this straight, you won the Hunt, and then Lan Xichen asked you what you want as reward - WWX - as a good little servant I said "I want for nothing that wangye and Jiang-zhuzi hasn't already provided me" - XY *rolls his eyes* Right. And then Jiang Wanyin came out of nowhere and said - "陛下,魏婴乃微臣之家生子,是前管家魏长泽 的独子, 因幼年时父母过世一直遗留市井。上天庇佑,几年前父亲将他巡回。魏婴为人端正淳厚,虽未上过学堂,但头脑机智。陛下也看到了,他弓发出众, 是。。。如能加强训练,以后必会为我姑苏所用 - " Bixia, Wei Ying is this subject's home-born servant, the only son of our previous head of staff Wei Changze. Due to the unfortunate passing of his parents in his youth, he has been getting by doing odd jobs in the capital. Heavens be willing, Father was able to find him after these many years and brought him home. Wei Ying is kind and righteous; though never have been taught by scholars, he is sharp of mind. As bixia has seen, he is a great marksmanship, is ... If he could be granted proper training, he would be a great asset for Gusu in the future. - And what a waste it would be if you were left to twindle away within the confines of a harem. I bet Lan Wangji just loved that. The balls on Jiang Wangyin - I do love his style. WWX You're the only one. Jiang-shushu just about had a heart attack when Jiang Cheng dissed Lan Wangji in public. Madam Yu nearly popped a vein too. XY: Yeah well, he's got a point. You may be Jiang Yanli's companion, but you're not Lan Wangji's concubine, you're just a servant with a skill. Honestly why shouldn't they put you to better use than waiting to maybe spread your legs for a prince who might just as easily toss you aside after the newness fades. WWX *slaps him up the head* Rascal! I'm your shixiong. Don't be so rude. Anyways, Lan Zhan, he - he was willing to let me go. I think he loves me you know - XY: He what now - WWX: He said - Lan Wangji came to kneel beside Wei Wuxian and Jiang Wanyin and bowed to his royal brother, "Huangxiong, Wei Ying is the peijia of my Jiang-furen, a servant of my manor. I... I long knew he is an excellent marksman and should have submitted his candidacy for the ranks but -" Lan Wangji looked at him then, eyes huge with something unreadable. "Jiang-xiao-jiangjun is right. Wei Ying is good, his mind is bright. He would be more suited to militia than...than within the walls of the inner court." "Wangye, have you....have you grown tired of Wei Ying -" "Wei Ying, no -" XY: Oh barf. So please tell me you chose to go to bingbu (ministry of war). WWX: Going to bingbu was never the assignment. If yifu wanted me in the ministry of war, I would've infiltrated them from the start. I refused. And it had the intended effect. "No?" Lan Xichen leaned forward curiously. "Joining the ranks will elevate your rank to that of a subject of the imperial government, and if you are truly as skilled and talented as my brother and Jiang-xiao-jiangjun say, you may rise yet to stand in my court as an officer of the imperial military. You will have your own commission, your own manor, marry, have children - all things which will be forbidden to you if you remain as you are now. As you are male, you cannot provide for Hanguang-fu any offspring, and your low-born status has precluded you from the position of consort or even vice-consort. Have you considered your options carefully? " "I understand bixia, and my decision is made. Nothing would please me more than to stay by wangye's side. I regret nothing." XY: >_> And A this has absolutely nothing to do with the fact you're increasingly horny for Lan Wangji? WWX: Of course not. Because of Lan Qiren, I couldn't advance in Hanguang-fu. But now that Lan Xichen had given me his royal decree, I am Lan Wangji's sanctioned mianshou. XY: *insert eye emoji* So...y'all fucked? WWX *wistful, thinking about the night he spent at the autumn palace after the hunt* : We did, you pervert. Ya happy now? *WWX sighed* But I know who we are and what I must do. Yifu needs me by Lan Wangji's side, for what reasons I do not yet know. No matter how he and I are now... one day it will
all end. XY: *stares into the camera like he's on the office*
Note: yifu = Wen Ruohan, WWX's adoptive father.

What kind of careers/life styles do you enjoy seeing for the mzds characters in modern aus? jiang siblings especially
I'm not picky! It's really more about how they behave in whatever context they're placed in than the specific job for me, and I like when they're all astronauts or marine biologists or race car drivers or whatever and so the idea that they're all kind of operating within the same professional circles stays intact. That being said, it's also nice to let Huaisang just chill out being an eternal art student sometimes, and I have a soft spot for modern aus where Jiang Cheng fucks off to do something he actually enjoys. When you remove the dynastic/reconstruction responsibilities that's much less out of character, and a big part of the draw of modern aus for me is a setting where it's easier for the characters to be a) alive and b) happy. Jiang Cheng the wedding planner remains my absolute favourite, as an opportunity for him to go full proxy bridezilla and mount intricate logistical campaigns to his heart's content while judging other people for their inferior aesthetic taste. I have seen people suggest that wedding planning is too soft for him and I'm just going to go ahead and assume those people have never met a wedding planner.
I'm fond of WWX as an engineer, as he strikes me as a STEM baby to his core and it gives him a good outlet for his mad scientist tendencies.
I feel a little bad giving Yanli the most obvious two professions of chef and therapist, though I do think she'd be very good at both of those things. She's actually one of the relatively few characters besides Jiang Cheng and Meng Yao I can see just straight up getting her MBA or JD for family expectation reasons, and I honestly think she'd be pretty straightforwardly competent at most jobs that require a lot of interpersonal skills.

Jin/Jiang/Lan/Nie modern AU family bbq! recreating very specific memories from my childhood of Mandatory Bank Holiday Sunday Bbq Family Gatherings
in this AU the older Jin siblings teamed up and got rid of JGS (JGY’s business skills and eidetic memory + Qin Su’s interpersonal skills and connections + JZX’s reputation and trust fund = Dream Team) and MXY has been in JZX and Yanli’s custody since he was about ten.
notes on the AU under the cut!
Zixun isn’t there because he and his family took JGS’s side in the legal battle, so he’s now That Awkward Cousin We Don’t Invite To Things, and Mianmian is there because she and JZX grew up together so he considers her basically his sister
Yanli and JGY have a very cheerful war of attrition over who does hosting duties at Jin Fam events, and the only reason JGY is currently winning is because Yanli’s pregnant so can’t really chase after him when he carries out all the plates
(JGY’s always happy to rope one or more boyfriend in to handle the heavy lifting, though)
90% of the time it’s WWX who runs around after the kids and he’s absolutely a-okay with that, just so long as LWJ holds his drink and feeds him when he takes a breather
this is WWX’s shirt
did JZX buy the obnoxious grill specifically for this bbq? yes. can he cook at all? absolutely not, he’s hopeless, but he does try, bless his heart. thankfully NMJ is actually a pretty good cook and has Yanli’s permission to step in if needs be
(JZX is pretty sure that Mianmian and Qin Su aren’t interested in each other, but he’s lowkey terrified at the possibility, because if they get together... which one of them does he give the shovel talk???)
there’s always one little prick who brings a fucking Super Soaker(TM) to a squirt gun fight, and this time it’s JC. originally I was imagining he would just use it to drench WWX and wouldn’t dare go after the kids, but @ellethinthewoods galaxy brained and pointed out: JC would get hyped up with competitive spirit, get Jin Ling right in the face, Jin Ling would burst into tears, and JC would spend the next half an hour trying desperately to convince Jin Ling not to tell Yanli.
MXY is only about 13/14 here, so there’s like a ten year age gap between him and NHS (and therefore no absolutely no romantic relationship!). NHS is sort of like his arts/theatre mentor. he’s probably showing him his photography blog.
MXY is emo. his siblings are... bemused, but supportive. MXY loves them a lot but can’t help being vaguely gutted that he got born into such a preppy family. he highkey thinks WWX is the coolest person ever, which literally no one else understands.

June 17: Chengxian 💜🖤💕
childhood friends to lovers/QPPs, ace Jiang Cheng, bi & aro Wei Wuxian, modern AU
(A/N: If you're wondering about a certain other someone, he will have a wonderful, full life of his own in Suzhou in this AU but is not in this story. 💙 There are some brief mentions of offscreen ace-antagonism, not by anyone we know.)
Read on ao3
Jiang Cheng had been Wei Ying's best friend in the whole world for his entire life.
Okay. Well, not quite his entire life, but certainly since Wei Ying’s parents moved to California when he was little little, which was about as far back as Wei Ying could remember anyway. Wei Ying’s baba and Jiang Cheng’s baba had grown up in Wuhan together and been best friends when they were kids, so naturally, when Wei Ying’s family moved into the same neighborhood as the Jiangs, it made perfect sense for Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng to become best friends too.
It was Jiang Cheng who had taught Wei Ying that he didn't have to be afraid of dogs, by introducing him to Princess, Jasmine, and Lil' Love. Lil' Love lived up to her name, coming and quietly sitting in all her fluffy glory on Wei Ying’s lap every time he went over to play.
It was also Jiang Cheng who Wei Ying got drunk with for the first time. They snuck booze from the cabinet where Wei Ying’s parents kept it and laughed at the faces each other made with every shot until they stopped tasting the harsh burn, and then laughing more just because.
(Wei Ying’s mom had not laughed, not at the time, when the two teens had been sick as anything the next morning, but instead made them a gloriously greasy late breakfast and gave them lots of advice about proper hydration.
Then she told Jiang Cheng’s mom and let her scold them.)
It was Jiang Cheng who came out first, their first semester in college, when he told Wei Ying he didn't think he wanted to have sex with anyone, ever, and asked if Wei Ying thought that meant no one would ever want to date him. Wei Ying hugged him tight and told him he didn't know about everyone out there, but he knew Jiang Cheng was the best guy in the world and would be an awesome boyfriend, and he'd fight anyone who said differently.
Jiang Cheng found a group on campus for third culture LBGT kids, and Wei Ying went with him, as a supportive ally.
Which was how Wei Ying figured out that he was not just a supportive ally.
In listening to the others talk about orientation and identity and attraction and cultural expectations, Wei Ying realized that what he'd always assumed was normal—finding all kinds of people physically attractive, regardless of their gender—was actually his bisexuality. So that was kind of cool.
"So yeah, now we can be queer together!" Wei Ying said, when he excitedly shared his newfound realization with Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Cheng snorted. "Yeah, 'all' and 'nothing,'" he joked.
It was Jiang Cheng who'd helped him practice what to say to his parents when he wanted to change his major at the end of sophomore year, and Jiang Cheng who reminded him to eat and sleep and "take a fucking break, Wei Ying," those next couple semesters when he took way too many hours so he wouldn't have to rack up a whole extra year's worth of student loans to finish his new degree plan.
It was Jiang Cheng who graduated first, on a gorgeous blue-skyed sunny day in May, and Jiang Cheng who suggested Wei Ying keep living with him at his new apartment, so he wouldn't have to try to find a one-semester lease until he finished in December.
(They renewed the lease together every time.)
Jiang Cheng ribbed him playfully each time Wei Ying met someone new, but he was always there each times things fizzled out after a few months for reasons that never quite made sense to Wei Ying.
Jiang Cheng occasionally dated too, and Wei Ying was glad he never did have to fight anybody—though he did drive Jiang Cheng to the emergency room the time he came home with split knuckles from punching a guy who, "seemed to think I didn't know my own mind about certain things."
But dating sucked for everybody, right? It wasn't like Wei Ying or Jiang Cheng were in any hurry to settle down and do the whole spouse and kids thing or whatever. Wei Ying tried to imagine it and just... couldn't, though the image of Jiang Cheng with a baby was admittedly pretty cute.
~
It was not Jiang Cheng, but Jiang Yanli, a few months after she proposed to her girlfriend and they started planning their wedding, who Wei Ying finally asked, "Yanli-jie, how does a person decide someone else is their person?"
Jiang Yanli looked across the room to where Jiang Cheng was showing her soon-to-be-wife how to put side spin on a billiards ball and smiled. "I think you just know," she said. "You meet someone and you get to know them, spend time together, then one day you realize you love them and want to build the rest of your life with them."
Wei Ying wrinkled his nose. "I dunno if it works that way for me. Just some random person? I've never met anyone I can imagine wanting to live with all the time. Well, besides—huh..." he cut off suddenly and darted a look over at Jiang Yanli, who just calmly sipped her drink.
"Have you ever told him that?" she asked, after a moment where Wei Ying reassessed his entire life and dating history. "I think he might appreciate hearing it."
"I... huh. Yanli-jie, you're kinda blowing my mind here," he complained.
"I gathered," she said wryly, before fixing him with a smile that made all the hair on the back of his neck stand up. "Of course, I trust," she told him, "that I do not need to explain to you of all people how very dearly I hold my didi's happiness and well-being."
He swallowed and raised three fingers in the salute he'd used ever since the summer that—hah—he and Jiang Cheng had decided as kids that they would make their own oath of brotherhood like the heroes of their favorite show. "I, Wei Ying, swear to you that I would kick my own ass before I did anything to hurt him."
Jiang Yanli leaned over to knock her shoulder against his and nodded. "That's what I thought."
~
Turned out, dating Jiang Cheng didn't suck at all.
It felt easy in a way Wei Ying’s past dates never had, less like trying to keep up with a game whose rules everybody knew except him, more like... well, like spending time with his best friend in the whole world, but on purpose. There was also a tension in the back of Wei Ying’s mind that seemed to have lifted, though he couldn't quite pinpoint what it was that had gone.
It was Jiang Cheng who helped him figure it out.
"I think it's that now I'm able to count on this. On us," he said, when Wei Ying brought it up. "Before, whenever you went out with someone new, I wondered if this would be the time you'd find someone to fall in love with and leave me behind."
"Aww, Chengcheng! I would never!"
Jiang Cheng huffed and rolled his eyes, but his cheeks were pink. "Well, I know that now," he said, a pleased little smile breaking through his attempts at a scowl.
"As long as you're sure—" Wei Ying began, still getting used to thinking about himself with the word "aromantic." Still a so very sure that Jiang Cheng deserved to be fallen in love with.
"Hey!" Jiang Cheng cut him off. "None of that. I know you. And I know you don't see it this way, but I personally think it's pretty damn romantic that you choose to love me, on purpose."
"I simply have exquisite taste in life partners," Wei Ying sniffed, embarassed the way he always got when Jiang Cheng declared something he'd done "romantic."
"You do," Jiang Cheng agreed. "Someone told me a long time ago I was the best guy in the world and would make an awesome boyfriend, and that he would fight anyone who said differently."
Wei Ying laughed. "That's you and your sister I've promised to kick my own ass if I ever break your heart, then. Guess I'll just have to keep you forever."
"Damn right, you will," Jiang Cheng agreed, grinning smug and happy and breathtakingly beautiful. Wei Ying leaned across the couch to give him a sweet, closed-mouth kiss—the kind Jiang Cheng had shyly admitted he actually did like, a lot—and smiled too, at how lucky he'd gotten to be with his best friend in the whole world for his entire life.
🖤💜
Today's (extremely long!) thread was inspired by this WONDERFUL art of ace Jiang Cheng and bi & aro Wei Ying! Go give Midori some love on Twitter!
I spent a nonzero amount of time googling to double check when various terms and flags came into vogue, so if you're wondering, WWX & JC were in college in the early 2000s, before the ace and aro flags were designed. By the time they get themselves figured out, they can get their cute wristbands.
...which, yes, means these dingdongs spent about a solid decade living together before realizing that was what they wanted to do forever. 😉
This also means Jiang Yanli and her unnamed wife here are getting married between when California started recognizing same-sex marriages in 2008 and the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling in 2015! THIS SHIT'S RECENT!!!
Happy Pride, thank you for reading, check out more LGBTQIA+ sweetness on my #PrideMonthSnippets Masterpost!

Hi y'all!
So I realized today that it's been about three months since I started cross-posting my stuff to ao3 (those of y'all who were here for After Each Midnight while it was still a wip will know that I've been writing for longer than that but anyway). With the latest fic I just posted, I now have 30 works published to ao3 within those three months! Which is wild to me!
Since that averages out to ten fics a month and I like round numbers, I decided to celebrate by listing my 10 favorite fics...of my own lol. Narcissistic? Maybe! But it's fun anyway!
This is a really long post as each rec includes a summary, an excerpt (or a few), and some personal notes/anecdotes about the writing process or what inspired me to write the fic, etc. so I'm putting it all under the break. If this doesn't sound like your cup of tea then of course please just skip over this one, but for anyone who wants to revisit some of my older works with me, or if you're curious about which fics I personally like the most, or if you want to talk about your favorite fics of mine in the replies or anything, then that's cool too! I just wanted to find a way to mark this down because it feels like something of an achievement ^_^
Thank you!
1. After Each Midnight Begins A New Day, (54,401 words, Rated E) Ship(s): 3zun, Wangxian Summary: When Lan Xichen wakes up the morning after the fifth anniversary of his life crumbling to rubble around him in Guanyin Temple, he's shocked to find both Nie Mingjue and Meng Yao in his bed, both whole and alive and...married to him?! (A time travel fix-it in which the time traveling and fixing of things has already been done by Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian, and Lan Xichen accidentally gets dragged along for the happily ever after.) Excerpt(s):
1. “Poor da-ge,” [Meng Yao] teases again, this time with a bit of an edge, and Lan Xichen cracks one eye open just enough to see him stripping first out of his shoes and socks, then his third layer of robes, then his second, until he’s dressed much as he had been the prior evening - in nothing but a black under-robe so sheer that it actually almost looks gray. It clings to all the petite, lithe curves of him and the sight makes Lan Xichen’s mouth practically water. “What if I want my turn with you now? What if I’m jealous that er-ge got to have you all to himself for hours , while your poor A-Yao had to go have a drink with Xian-didi just to pass the time.” “Oh gods you’re a beast too,” Nie Mingjue groans as Meng Yao slips on top of him gracefully to lean down and pepper kisses up and down his neck and shoulder. “Get off of me, foul creature. Go tempt our husband, I’m temporarily immune to your wiles.” “You’re never immune to my wiles, da-ge, and er-ge is meditating oh so diligently. He’s certainly not smiling and watching us through his lashes as if we’re not well aware of his tricks and what he likes to watch.” - 2. “It took years of practice, you with your painting and I with my answering, but when you were a teenager I finally decided on the best advice I could think to give you: Do not seek for every answer in this life all at once, Xichen,” he instructs with a smile as he returns to painting. “Let them come to you gently and in their season, and trust that all will be as it should in the end.” Lan Xichen takes another breath and returns to his painting with a slightly trembling hand - a trembling that ends up creating a lovely branch on the tree he is painting that, when he turns his head to look, is modeled almost exactly after the one growing in the garden behind the Gentian House, just beyond the window. “I don’t remember ever seeing this tree,” he whispers and Qingheng-Jun hums across from him in clear understanding. “And yet it flows from your brush all the same. Now we can all know that you have nothing to fear, your memories will also come to you in their season. Until then, allow yourself to rest, and remember that you have the support of your family whenever you need it.” “Yes, father,” he replies with a whisper and a tremulous smile, feeling lighter than he has in days. - 3. “I will go into seclusion.” The statement is a stone dropped into the gently rippling water of a spring-fed pool. The stone is jagged and pitted with all that the world has done to chip away at it, to make it rough and painful to the touch. It is sharp in his hands, heavy with all the hurts he still carries in his chest, all the grief he has no more room to hold. He feels lighter with it out of his grasp, the words settling into the ensuing silence with some bittersweet relief.
Notes: I know I've said it before but it bears repeating: this entire fic exists solely because of the smut scene in chapter 1. I thought of the smut first, and then the lead-in to it, and I intentionally left the end of chapter 1 ambiguous - it could have ended right there as an angsty one-shot with Lan Xichen believing that it was all a hallucination, and there's nothing really in the text to say that it's not because Lan Xichen is a very unreliable narrator in this fic. But then I wanted to write the backstory for the smut if, in fact, it wasn't a hallucination - and everything kind of...butterfly-effected out from there to become what it is now, along with all the extras in the series that's now roughly 120k long altogether and still not finished. Oops. Oh and also: this fic that started the ball rolling only exists because for some reason the servers for Omegle went down for months where I live, and prior to that I used to spend hours rp'ing. Without that creative outlet, I filled the vacuum with writing fic instead and now here we are. So if you're grateful for my fics then thank Omegle for sucking for a few months lol --//-- 2. Loving, Loud, Wild, and Theirs (7386 words, Rated T) Ship(s): Xuanli & Gen (kidfic), 3zun (briefly) - an extra for AEM Summary: A brief look at how in this kinder world, Jin Zixuan managed to find and legitimize his three siblings as well as a snapshot of the chaos of love and fun that is his family with his siblings, his beloved wife, and their seven children. Excerpt:
He had listened to [Madam Qin] and her handmaid, and he had believed them, and he had been unsurprised to find himself thinking quite uncharitably of his father following his promise to Madam Qin that he would do everything in his power to make it right, as much as he could. [Jin Zixuan and Meng Yao] return to Jinlintai the day after the next, once their business is concluded. He’s relieved when nothing needs his immediate attention as it means he’s free to retreat into his and Jiang Yanli’s quarters so he can tell her everything that’s weighing on his mind. “No more surprise siblings from now on,” he sighs into the comfort of Jiang Yanli's chest when he’s finished outlining what has happened and his plans to prepare a new suite of rooms in the family wing of the tower. For Qin Su. His sister. Jiang Yanli just laughs her tinkling laugh and kisses him, her hands gentle as she combs his hair back from his face with her fingertips. “You’ve got more siblings now than any of the rest of us,” she teases with a mischievous smile down at him that is a bit too reminiscent of, weirdly, both Wei Wuxian and Mo Xuanyu for comfort. “Two brothers, a sister, and of course we must keep Mianmian in her spot on the list. If you would like to count brothers-in-law as well you’ve also got A-Xian, A-Cheng, Huaisang, Wangji, Xichen, and Mingjue...” He groans and hides his face properly in the soft silk of her robes even as she laughs again over his head.
Notes: This fic is actually a request fill for someone and I had some trouble ending it because there's a lot more I want to write with this wild family, though I did eventually find what felt like a good place to cut it off with 3zun arriving in Jinlintai for the visit they leave for at the end of AEM. There is something of a follow-up floating around my wips that - if it ever gets written - is a direct sequel to AEM that continues where this extra leaves off, with 3zun getting to spend time with their hoard of niblings in Jinlintai. No promises about if/when that will get written though. --//-- 3. Performance Art (8106 words, Rated M) Ships: 3zun, Wangxian (briefly) Summary: A Modern AU inspired by the 'Hysterical Literature' performance art project. Lan Xichen, Nie Mingjue, and Meng Yao take turns doing their best to read aloud from chosen written works as they're filmed. The twist is that they're trying to do so as they're being pleasured with a vibrator controlled by one of their partners off-camera, each of their turns ending when the partner being filmed/played with has an orgasm. Excerpt(s):
1. “Engage people with what they expect; it is..- it…it is what they are able to discern and.. ngh.. confirms their projections. It settles.. ah settles them into predictable-“ He cuts off suddenly to set the book down flat and slap one hand down sharply on the tabletop. Meng Yao simply clicks another button and Nie Mingjue groans as his newly unoccupied hand twitches back to rest on the edge of the table closer to himself, as if about to drop down beneath it. Lan Xichen and Meng Yao both shift forward in their seats but Nie Mingjue catches himself before they have to intervene, returning his hand to the middle of the table and forcing a deep breath into his lungs so he can continue. “-Predictable patterns of..of response, occupying their minds while you w-wait for the ex- extra-“ he huffs out a sharp breath and curls his hand into a fist as he tilts forward and forces out the rest of the sentence in a rush. “Extraordinary moment — that whichtheycannotanticipate. FUCK!” - 2. It’s a few hours of quiet, peaceful work later when Lan Wangji shifts his weight in the way that means he wants Wei Wuxian’s actual attention and not his ‘ I’m sculpting so I’m periodically looking at you ’ sort of attention which he is, of course, quick to grant. He pauses in his muttering half to himself and half to Lan Wangji to say, “Hm? What’s up Zhanzhan?” “From Xiongzhang,” he says by way of explanation, holding his phone out for Wei Wuxian to squint at the screen. It takes him a moment to understand what he’s looking at, his eyes needing a second to adjust to the small black and white video that’s playing after having spent hours looking between Lan Zhan and the clay form taking shape under his hands. “What is this?” he asks as he leans in closer and squints a little harder. He blinks and his eyes go wide in the next moment as he realizes what’s happening on the screen as the woman’s tension climaxes ( literally ) - and then it’s just a hop, skip, and a jump to figure out just why he’d been asked to create an eerily similar setup in his own studio the previous afternoon for three men he might as well consider his sort-of brothers at this point. His next exhale is a wheeze as his ears go hot and Lan Wangji is instantly shrugging into a robe to stand from his lounging position and approach, concern written all over his features. “Wei Ying?”
Notes: I don't really have too much to say about this one except that it brought me so much joy and laughter to write and it honestly kind of surprises me that it's one of my less popular fics - it's nothing but a fun, sexy time! But I'm also terrible at guessing trends/what people will want to see so that might be on me haha. Oh! Also - a minor thing but something I'm very mildly proud of: the narrator voice is dependent on who's behind the camera! I wanted a way to make the person filming feel just as involved as the other two and I thought that was a fun way to do it since within the narrative it's technically going to be their perspective used for the video they're recording. Just to give y'all a little insight into my decision-making when it comes to my writing style for this one. --//-- 4. Anything For My Nie-Zongzhu (6411 words, Rated E) Ship: NieYao - pre-canon (just barely) Summary: Meng Yao is Nie Mingjue's trusted right hand, intelligent and valued by his Sect Leader, at least, who has learned lately to appreciate him a hell of a lot in private too - and for much more personal matters than the minutiae of running the Nie Sect. Seeing as Nie Mingjue trusts him so much, he finds it in himself to ask for something new - for Meng Yao to top him. [Technically an extra for AEM but can be read as a standalone] Excerpt:
“Am I to play into this boorish act you’re putting on tonight?” he teases instead as he steps closer until he’s near enough to feel the way the steam from the bath has turned the air sticky and humid. Nie Mingjue finally looks up at him and Meng Yao is internally crowing with triumph as he watches the lines of tension around his eyes and mouth fall away, his expression smoothing into quiet contentment. He did that. His presence alone is enough to help Nie Mingjue relax. It feels nearly as good as the day the man had angrily defended him to his own disciples and promoted him on the spot. “It’s not an act, I’m plenty boorish,” Nie Mingjue gruffs, returning his gaze to the letter, but this close Meng Yao can actually watch his eyes do nothing but try to glare a hole through the center of the page. “Of course you are, Zongzhu,” Meng Yao allows, his tone openly humoring - as is the smile tightening the corners of his mouth. “Therefore I can only suppose that you would prefer it if I returned to my walk and left you to continue your...correspondence in peace.”
Notes: Once again not really many notes on this one! I just love NieYao, I think their dynamic during Meng Yao's Nie Sect days has so much potential and I love exploring it every so often. --//--
5. Bite The Hands That Feed (1590 words, Rated E) Ship: XiYao Summary: After being forced out of the Nie Sect, Meng Yao has to come to grips with the hunger that's been chasing him his whole life, and he finds temporary satisfaction over and over in Lan Xichen, who is always so generous with his time and his body and is willing to help him feel less empty even just for a night. Excerpt:
He would never bite the hands that feed him, that stuff him full enough to make him believe for a moment that he’s no longer starving. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t inflict pains. He bites and he scratches and he plants himself in the bloody furrows until flowering moans reward his violent care, until pleasure bursts sun-warmed and sweet between them, berries ripe for the picking. He stains his mouth red with them, his fingers purple with the bruises he paints so delicately on his devotee’s body. If Meng Yao is being clawed to a slow torturous death from within, then it stands to reason that his other half will be ripped to shreds from without. He keeps his nails sharp and his teeth bared to tear into his flesh and drink sweetly of the vintage he offers - sweat, spend, blood, saliva when their mouths meet for crushing kisses. All of it is his to consume. He puts his mouth to the feast of Lan Xichen’s body and eats until the hunger pangs are satiated, drinks until he feels dizzy with it.
Notes: So I wrote this one when I was getting a little tired of the straight narration style of all my other fics and I wanted to try my hand at something looser, a little more prose-like but also a little darker than my usual fluff. I'm not sure how successful I was - this is actually one of my absolute least popular fics, number-wise! - but it's one of my favorites anyway. --//-- 6. A Figure, A Mouth (2788 words, Rated M) Ship: Wenzhou Summary: A quiet, intimate evening spent in the comfort of the Four Seasons Mountain Manor sometime between their arrival/fixing up of the place and the confrontation with Ye Baiyi. Excerpt:
After a while of warming each other up Wen Kexing urges him back up to push the bed under the window just as he’d said he would. Zhou Zishu takes the opportunity to blow out the candles before he rejoins Wen Kexing in their bed, the sudden darkness leaving them free to admire each other clothed in nothing but broad swathes of cool, sweet blue light bisected by deep black lattices of shadow from the trees out in the yard, the shadows from the contours of the wall and decorations around the window blocking and revealing them in turns. Lao Wen is, of course, as beautiful like this as he has been in every way Zhou Zishu has ever seen him, and he takes the time to savor it, to indulge in the decadence that Wen Kexing presents for each of his remaining senses. He’s a feast for the eyes, all hard muscle and skin glistening with glittering diamonds of sweat along his shoulders and the soft curve of his cheek. He’s a symphony for the ears, breathless desire and tender calls of his name that Zhou Zishu never lets go unanswered when they’re like this. By now Wen Kexing is an expert at drawing pleasure from him in every unlikely way there is to make sure that the effects of the nails don’t keep him from reaching his peak at least once, occasionally more in spite of his fading sense of touch.
Notes: Wenzhou makes me so soft and emotional, y'all. The next one on the list is also a Wenzhou fic and I just can't seem to stop writing them in fluffy/smutty situations because it's what they deserve. I really don't have anything more interesting to say about this fic, I just love them haha. --//-- 7. Tease Him Just Enough (2537 words, Rated M) Ship: Wenzhou Summary: A possible outcome if the conversation post-face reveal in episode 6 had gone differently - i.e. if Zhou Zishu had called Wen Kexing out on all his flirting and challenged him to do something about it - and then he does. Excerpt:
They don’t need words to communicate that at least right here in this particular moment there’s no one else they would rather have in their arms, pressed up against their bodies, no one else’s tongue who would find a new home in each other’s mouths or any other body their hands would rather explore. Wen Kexing has already known that they’re fated, but for the first time it feels like they’re agreeing to be so. Even if it’s just for a night. (Not that he thinks it will be just one night for them, but getting Zhou Xu to agree to anything remotely of the kind is like trying to drag a stray back-alley cat into a bath so he’ll take what he can get.)
Notes: My first fic for Word of Honor! The whole time I was watching the show (read: obsessively binge-watching) I was like 'Okay I like this show a lot but it's not nearly as compelling as The Untamed, idk if I'll be motivated to write anything for it'. Then I got to the end and I was like NEVERMIND YES I AM. I played myself. --//-- 8. You Need Tending (12,108 words, Rated T) Ship(s): Lan Wangji & Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji & Lan Xichen, Lan Qiren & The Jades & Wei Wuxian (this is a kidfic so nothing romantic!) Summary: Wei Wuxian is alone and homeless on the streets of Yunmeng, unaware of the presence of his parents' old friend so nearby. Lan Wangji is a child grieving for the loss of his mother in silence, overwhelmed by the world his uncle keeps dragging him out into. It takes their paths crossing more than once for Lan Qiren to realize just who Wei Wuxian is and that he needs their help, but he gets there eventually. Excerpt:
He watches on as the man comes to a stop next to the boys and squats down to check over the one who had been lost and suddenly he remembers lying on the ground and looking up at a stern-faced man with gentle hands and a ribbon across his forehead. The man who had given him medicine and bandages after a small boy had defended him from dogs, and an older boy had talked to him so kindly and helped him to sit up off the dirt. Wei Ying gasps as the memory hits and he scrambles back down off the roof, landing on the packed dirt of the space between the buildings with an oof, excitement bubbling in his chest. Along with the memory comes a name and it flies from his lips as he scrambles up off the ground to push his way into the crowd again. “Master Lan!” he shouts, his tiny voice lost in the din of the market. He tries to shove closer but the little family is already walking away, their backs to him as he strains against the flow of people much bigger and stronger than him. “Master Lan!” he tries again, desperation lending extra strength and emotion to his cry. Wei Ying stops struggling as he watches the two boys in white walk away, the pair of them flanking Master Lan in his sky blue robes as they move through the market, radiating serenity in the midst of the chaos. His vision blurs and he scrubs his forearm against his eyes angrily to dry them, trying to keep the three of them in his sight for as long as he can just in case they turn around and spot him. Just in case they remember him and maybe want to tell him to come with them.
Notes: Baby Wei Ying T-T He just hits me right in the heart, and so does baby Lan Zhan! And baby Lan Xichen. All the babies. This fic was actually completely inspired by an utterly adorable fanart of Lan Xichen giving a grumpy baby A-Zhan a piggyback ride! I'd been wanting to write a kidfic type fix-it for a while and that art was the spark I needed to come up with something workable. (Edit: here’s my reblog of the art I’m talking about!) --//--
9. Familial Circumstances (5393 words, Rated G)
Ship(s): Lan Qiren & Original Characters, Lan Qiren & Jin Zixuan, Lan Qiren & Qin Su, Lan Qiren & Mo Xuanyu - An extra for AEM
Summary: Another kidfic extra for the horde of children in Jinlintai, this time as seen through the lens of their beloved Great Uncle Lan. It's a simple relationship-study-type look at how all the children love their Great Uncle and how much he loves and treasures them in return.
Excerpt:
An unusual stillness accompanies [Jin Ruhai's] playing. Jin Lu stops fidgeting with her fingers, the twins slip into the perfect stillness of those who are utterly aware of themselves at all times - a trait [Lan Qiren has] noticed in every skilled fighter he’s ever come across - and even Jin Ye relaxes, slumping further and further backwards until she’s slouched down against his stomach, legs dangling over his crossed shins.
The piece isn’t a terribly long one, nor as complex as the next score Lan Qiren intends to teach the boy, but Jin Ruhai’s mastery of it is impressive. Again, Lan Qiren is forcefully reminded of Lan Wangji, always most at peace when behind his instrument to play with and/or for the people he loves.
There’s silence in the room until the last note fades with a shiver into the air and Jin Ruhai pulls his hands back from the instrument. The stillness lasts for one more moment before it’s interrupted by Jin Lu sneezing suddenly and her siblings laugh as the quiet breaks.
“I had to hold that in the whole time !!” Jin Lu laughs as she rubs her sleeve under her nose, one eye screwed shut as she giggles. “I didn’t want to mess up A-Zhuang’s song, it’s so pretty!”
Notes: I'm definitely biased because they're all my oc's except for Jin Ling, but I genuinely love all of the Jin children in the AEM AU. If anyone is ever interested in knowing more about their individual personalities and the like please don't hesitate to ask me, I've actually put quite a bit of thought into all 6 of the kids I created wholecloth and I have a lot of feelings about Jin Ling getting the chaotic siblings and loving parents he was robbed of.

10. Opportunities To Practice (5710 words, Rated M) (*WIP)
Ship: Xuanli - An extra for AEM
Summary: Jin Zixuan is nervous for his..marital activities with Jiang Yanli - after all, who could he possibly ask for advice? His father? No thank you. Thankfully Jiang Yanli is sweet and patient and knows her husband well - he just needs a bit of time and he'll get it figured out.
Excerpt:
She shivers with an interesting combination of want and intense vulnerability as she stands there, feeling bare in spite of her remaining layer. It’s of a material so sheer as to be practically nonexistent, nothing more than a delicate veil of a red so pale it’s nearly pink that sits on her body like a second skin. Until it falls gently away at the knee to flutter around her ankles, it clings to every curve, every contour, and as she watches Jin Zixuan doesn’t even bother to hang the robe he had just removed on the screen. He lets it drop into a soft pool around her bare feet, his gaze roaming her newly exposed figure - she would perhaps feel strange about it did he not look so devoted , so in awe of seeing her practically naked in front of him.
Yanli gasps softly as he suddenly drops to his knees at her feet and oh - that’s heady. Her body, which she hasn’t really thought of too much in the past beyond the occasional irritation that it’s weaker than she would prefer, has put the man she loves on his knees. He’s looking up at her now, his eyes wide and his hands reverent as he raises them to rest on her thighs, thumbs caressing her too-warm skin through the barely-there robe that bunches up softly under the pressure of his grip.
“You’re right,” he finally breathes, sounding slightly strained. “I’d like this to stay on. If that’s - are you alright?”
“I am,” she reassures.
Notes: This last fic is technically a wip, the only one in the list! However! - it's going to be a collection of one-shots centered around Xuanli and their sexual exploits that lead to their seven children, and possibly also the ones that are just for fun (horny Yanli rights forever). It's not currently high on my list of priorities or anything and the one chapter that's up so far can stand on its own so it's a wip but it's not? I just love Xuanli so much and I want to explore their relationship in my happy fix-it AU whenever the mood strikes, and whenever that happens this is where those one-shots will go.
--//--
And that's it! My personal top 10 favorite fics of my own as of right now. I thought about doing my top 10 according to statistics like hit counts or kudos, but I genuinely love some of these unpopular fics and I wanted to give them some love and attention even if it's just for me. I know there's a lot here to sift through but if any of y'all enjoyed the list or any of the specific fics on it let me know! I liked taking this little pause to take a look at what I've actually been producing these last few months.
Thanks for reading!

Museum Bonding
Characters: Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, Jiang Cheng
Warnings: Blood and arguing, Modern Au, Sometimes You Just Gotta Punch It Out
Words: 4.5k
Summary: Wei Wuxian wants his brother and fiancé to get along and decides to leave them alone at a museum. It works, but it takes a few punches and a near heart attack for Wei Wuxian. Apparently, punching fiancé's is a family tradition.
Read me on Ao3, Ko-Fi is on Sidebar
“Wei Wuxian you need to come get your fiancé this fucking instant.” Jiang Cheng’s voice hissed through the phone as Wuxian put it to his ear.
With a soft sigh, Wuxian grabbed a spoon and continued his stirring before he bothered to answer Jiang Cheng’s begging. Jiang Cheng and Lan Zhan were supposed to be bonding while Wuxian helped Yanli finish cooking. He’d only been gone for two hours and apparently they were already at each other’s throats.
“Chengcheng, please, what did he do? You know you can’t treat him like me, he and his brother aren’t like us.” Wuxian hummed, thinking about the well-mannered Xichen fondly. They really were so much more lowkey in their arguments.
“I hate you, I hate you so much and I hate him… We’re… bonding and I don’t like it.” The way Jiang Cheng howled it into the phone, Wuxian would have thought he was being actively killed rather than just wandering around a museum.
Wuxian laughed so hard he dropped the spoon onto the floor and had to fall back against the counter. He tried to stifle it with a hand to his mouth but it did nothing to stop the flowing giggles.
In the other room Yanli gave him an alarmed look but that just made the giggles turn into wheezing. Even Jiang Cheng’s angry growling in his ear did absolutely nothing to help cut off the endless stream. He tried his best, he really did, but this was the most ridiculous thing he’d ever heard out of his brother and he would remember this for years.
“Wei Ying.” Lan Zhan’s voice came through the phone, sounding almost as distressed as Jiang Cheng and the laughter only increased.
“Wa-wait…” He wheezed, fumbling around for the spoon and taking the second to grab a clean one to suck in a few breaths. They sounded so upset at getting along, what was Wuxian supposed to do?
“Okay, okay, I’m… I’m back.” Wuxian still snickered to himself as he started stirring again at Yanli’s pointed look. Pregnant and missing her husband was not leading to a happy Yanli and Wuxian did not want to be the one at the bad end of her disappointed face.
“Can I please come stay with you?” Lan Zhan said, and if it was anyone else Wuxian would have said it was a whine but of course his amazing Lan Zhan would never.
Suppressing another round of laughter, Wuxian shook his head and smiled at the pan instead. Was it cheesy of him to still be so excited and fuzzy-feeling whenever Lan Zhan said anything about being with him? Yes. Would Wuxian ever stop? Nope.
“Lan Zhan.” Wuxian finally said, trying his best to use a stern tone that definitely wasn’t working. “Jiang Cheng, you two are supposed to be bonding. Why is that so bad?”
The phone scratched and made a shuffling noise before Jiang Cheng’s voice came back.
“Did you know your fiancé loves art history?”
Wei Wuxian nodded to himself, wondering why that was a big deal. Was Jiang Cheng just grumpy that Lan Zhan knew more about the paintings? Or maybe Lan Zhan had corrected the guide, that had happened the last time they’d gone together.
“Xichen is a well known artist, I’d be more confused if Lan Zhan wasn’t interested in it-”
“Did you know that your brother loves art history?” Lan Zhan’s voice cut in and that was news to Wuxian.
“Uh, no? Jiang Cheng hates it, he failed three art classes in college. Had to get a job and everything to pay for them because his mother wouldn’t pay for them.”
“I didn’t-” Jiang Cheng’s voice cut off and Wuxian just knew his fiancé was giving Jiang Cheng a glare of absolute loathing for daring to lie even if it was to get along with Lan Zhan. “Wuxian, I did not fail three classes.”
Jiang Cheng’s voice dropped into the lowest hiss as if someone was going to crawl out of the walls with his mother to yell at him again. It had not been a good two years and even Jin Zixuan had been trying to offer Jiang Cheng money to just take a different elective so he could pass. Jiang Cheng, like usual, had been too damn stubborn to admit defeat and had just re-taken the same classes even when his parents had cut the college fund.
Wei Wuxian understood not wanting to admit to that, especially when the Jiang name held prestige in the fashion industry, and if it was anyone else then Wuxian would be happy to lie. Not to Lan Zhan though, never to Lan Zhan.
Wuxian opened his mouth to inform him of just that, when Jiang Cheng cut him off with an embarrassed confession.
“Tell your perfect fiancé to stop looking at me like that… I didn’t fail the classes, I didn’t want to graduate yet and have to go into the business so I lied and said I failed them. No one looked at my transcripts, I took a different class each time, I didn’t realize you actually believed that bullshit.” Jiang Cheng confessed sullenly and Wuxian wished he was standing beside him so he could kick his ass.
“You what?” Wuxian howled at the phone, dropping it onto the counter and pressing the speaker when Yanli ran into the room in a panic. “You tell Yanli-jie what you just said right now.”
“No wait- She’s going to be ups-”
“A-Cheng.”
“Fuck.” The phone went silent and Wei Wuxian wondered what silent conversation Lan Zhan and Jiang Cheng were glaring out. If it wasn’t for the fact that Yanli was now in this, he would be driving over there just to watch it go down.
“Okay… fucking… You remember when Mom kicked you out? You left and you said ‘don’t be a pushover when I can’t protect you’.” Jiang Cheng started and Wei Wuxian wailed dramatically, smacking himself in the face.
“I meant don’t let Jin Zixun talk shit, I didn’t mean… Lan Zhan, smack him for me! Twice!” There was a moment of almost audible mutual glaring. “Jiang Cheng, oh my god, oh my god. This is why she hated me, I turned you into a disgrace.”
“Shut up, I have two Master’s degrees from it even Jin Zixuan only has one.” Jiang Cheng shouted back before shuffling came over the phone and Wuxian realized Lan Zhan was probably shoving him out of the quiet museum.
“Enough yelling,” Yanli sighed softly, “A-Cheng, what are you talking about?”
It took a moment but finally Jiang Cheng’s voice came through at a much softer tone.
“I… wanted to get back at Mom for kicking Wuxian out, and I wanted to major in Art history anyways. Dad said that I had to go into business to take over Lotus, the only difference for the degrees were three classes so I just… Did both of them. Told Mom I’d failed to make a point, I’m perfectly fine at fucking up my life without Wuxian in it. Wait, why am I even having this conversation?”
“That backfired real fucking quick didn’t it.” Wuxian growled, he could see Jiang Cheng’s wince and the stubborn set to his shoulders.
How could his little brother be so stupid? He could have just done classes on the side, there was no need to get back at his parents. Wei Wuxian never held that against them, never! If he’d known it was all a stupid childish grudge that caused Jiang Cheng to get kicked out of the house for two years, he would have dragged him back and apologized himself.
“Shut up, I loved those classes! The only part of college that was fucking worth it. Don’t give me that look Lan Wangji, not all of us get to do what we want with our lives.”
“I did not give you a look-”
“You did, it’s the same fucking look you give me every time you see me. Like you have no fucking clue how your perfect precious Wei Ying came to be so amazing with me as a brother, like you’re disgusted with having to see me exist or fuck up-”
“I have not once-“
“Hey hey! You two stop it, both of you now. Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan, can you please walk away for me?” Wuxian barked into the phone, trying to be louder than their arguing but he had no idea if either of them even remembered that he was still there.
“-give a fuck if you hate me, you’re-”
“I have never said that I-”
“He’s my fucking family and I-”
“Wei Ying is-”
“Lan Zhan! Jiang Cheng! Come on you two please stop fighting, guys I swear I will cry.” He tried again but the growling didn’t stop for even a second.
“-I don’t care! Who do think gives a damn about you-”
The call ended with a rather concerning cracking and Wuxian’s head fell directly into the cupboard. Even the pain wasn’t enough to get him to actually concentrate, what just happened?
One moment they’re getting along, and apparently bonding to the point that both of them were actually worried and now they’re screaming at each other because of a lie that wasn’t even involving Lan Zhan! A lie that was completely and utterly Wuxian’s fault for pissing off Yu Ziyuan and somehow convincing his brother to go insane by trying to tell him to not let Jin Zixun kick him around.
“Jie…” He turned to her, eyes wide and hopeful. She would be able to tell him what to do or atleast what was going on. Right?
Even Yanli looked completely taken aback, her mouth moving soundlessly. They stared at each other, both trying to figure out how to fix this.
Atleast when Wuxian had punched Jin Zixuan he’d been fourteen, not twenty eight and in public. Was this going to be a tradition? Was Yanli going to sock Jiang Cheng’s future spouse?
The front door creaked open with a soft call from Jin Zixuan and they both snapped back to themselves.
“A-Xuan, I need you to drive A-Ying to the museum. I have to keep the food from burning.” Yanli said immediately, grabbing the spoon to stir before things started to burn. Jin Zixuan’s face came around the corner looking rather like a kicked puppy at the lack of greeting.
If it wasn’t a matter of life and death, Wuxian might have actually thought it was cute. But it was so he didn’t care and simply grabbed his arm to drag him out. Yanli was too far along in her pregnancy to be running after the two so Wuxian didn’t mind going alone anyways.
“Jiang Cheng and Lan Zhan got into a fight,” Wuxian finally explained as he shoved his feet into his shoes. That got Zixuan’s attention and he picked his keys up again and let himself be pulled out after a quick declaration of love towards Yanli’s stirring form.
“A fight? I mean Jiang Cheng I understand, but Wangji?” Jin Zixuan looked even more bewildered than Wuxian felt, but that didn’t stop him from freezing until he’d scowled Jin Zixuan into a mumbled apology.
“Just… Just get us there and we’ll explain everything over dinner.”
Wuxian tried to call Lan Zhan the moment he was in the car, tapping his feet anxiously against the bottom of the floor. For once, Zixuan didn’t bother to complain about it and just drove a little faster when the phone reached voicemail.
“Are you sure it was a fight? Don’t give me that look! Wanyin has a temper but he doesn’t just attack people… That aren’t you.” Zixuan amended and Wuxian hid his face behind his hands with a loud groan.
That was true, Jiang Cheng had a temper but he’d also been running Lotus LLC. for years and knew how to keep himself calm. Which meant that either Lan Zhan had said something truly unforgivable (for Jiang Cheng atleast) or Lan Zhan threw the first punch.
Wuxian couldn’t even say that it was impossible, Lan Zhan was more than a little overprotective of him. If Jiang Cheng said the wrong thing or it sounded like the wrong thing…
“Oh my god I’ve ruined my family a second time.” He said desperately, wanting nothing more than to just be home, preferably in the arms of his fiancé.
“Hey, hey, if something happens it’ll blow over eventually.” Zixuan said awkwardly before a very hesitant and flat hand patted Wuxian’s head. “Right? Family no matter what, even if you break someone’s nose, I said that before right? Remember you hated me and now you don’t.”
“Oh god Jiang Cheng’s going to break Lan Zhan’s nose and he’s going to hate the rest of my family.” Wuxian cried, pressing his hands firmer against his face so he didn’t actually start sobbing. If he was the reason why the love of his life hated his family then Wuxian would never be able to forgive himself or feel like he deserved to look at any of them.
“No- I… No you don’t hate me, and I don’t hate you and I’m making this worse.” Zixuan cursed tried to squeeze Wuxian’s shoulder comfortingly before he focused on the road, trying to figure out when he started actually caring about Wuxian and his partner.
__
Dark hair took up most of Jiang Wanyin’s vision as he blinked rapidly, the tears still pricking at his eyes. He tried to sniff but agony just shot up his nose instead and he groaned angrily.
“How bad is it?”
Lan Wangji’s hum did nothing to assuage his fears but a second later pale eyes met Jiang Wanyin’s and the man nodded.
“It’s not broken.” Lan Wangji finally said, carefully pressing a few more napkins onto the bloody mess. Jiang Wanyin swatted his hand away and moved to hold it himself, tilting his head to follow Lan Wangji’s movements to the bench beside him.
“You,” Jiang Wanyin started with a bump to Lan Wangji’s shoulder, “have a hard fucking head. Welcome to the family.”
Lan Wangji bristled like an angry bird before he blinked and realized that Jiang Wanyin was grinning at him. He was trying to be friendly.
Lan Wangji quietly reminded himself to tell Xichen just how much he appreciated having a mentally sane brother.
“I’m sorry I broke your phone.” Wangji finally said, looking down at the shattered screen in Jiang Wanyin’s hand.
“Don’t worry about it, I broke yours too when you fell on it… Wuxian’s going to have a heart attack though.”
Lan Wangji winced at the reminder, Wei Ying was incredibly attached to both of them and the last thing he’d heard was Lan Wangji headbutting his brother. Then he winced again at pain rocketing across his face, and reached up to tenderly press against the freshly bruised skin on his eye.
“Oh, right, lemme see.” Jiang Wanyin didn’t bother to wait for permission, just reached over to turn Lan Wangji’s face over.
It took every ounce of Lan Wangji’s patience not to headbutt him again, but after taking a punch to the face it really wasn’t worth it. Besides, if Wei Ying came over while Wangji was fighting his brother it would make things that much worse. He could barely fathom that not even fifteen minutes ago he and Jiang Wanyin had actually started to like each other and now they were both bruised and bloody.
“I didn’t hit hard enough to worry about cracking your skull, so you probably don’t need an X-ray, but if it stays a sharp pain I’d go in anyways, or if you can't move your eye.” Jiang Wanyin said knowledgeably, Lan Wangji wondered how he knew so much but at the same time he didn’t really care about that right now.
“Are you saying that you pulled your punch?” Lan Wangji said blankly. That punch had hurt, and Jiang Wanyin had pulled it?
“Of course I did, If I didn’t you’d be on your way to the hospital with a broken nose and a cracked eye. I grew up with Wuxian, do you really think we never got into scuffles? Got to the point, Dad signed us up for classes so we’d punch other people instead… Never stopped us though.” Jiang Wanyin said fondly, dabbing at the still bleeding nose and leaning back into the bench now that his examination was over.
“Why would you fight your brother?” Lan Wangji was aghast, of course Wei Ying had told him about some of the fights he’d gotten into when he was younger, but he’d never realized how physical he meant. He couldn’t even imagine punching Xichen, or, heaven forbid, Xichen punching him.
“Why wouldn’t I? Oh right, you were raised properly.” It didn’t sound sarcastic so Lan Wangji didn’t react. “Sometimes you just get pissed off and you have nothing else to do but to tackle your idiot brother until Jiejie comes over to help. Don’t look at me like that, Wuxian broke my arm, twice. And the second time wasn’t even my fault.”
Jiang Wanyin’s head turned toward him with an almost evil mirth.
“You got grown-up Wei Ying, I got feral Wei Wuxian. Do you know how many times that little shit would pick fights then bolt back to hide behind me when he realized he was out-sized or out-numbered? Another reason we had to take defence classes, even if we were outnumbered, if we had each other’s back we weren’t going down easy. This way we stopped coming home bloody.”
Again Lan Wangji didn’t say anything, just sat quietly and watched the park in front of them as he thought. Wei Ying had told him multiple times that Jiang Wanyin wasn’t like Xichen, they communicated differently. Lan Wangji had assumed that meant that he was probably more like Nie Mingjue but atleast Nie Mingjue could compliment Nie Huaisang to his face instead of half hearted insults.
Wei Ying said they were bonding, and they had nothing to do until Wei Ying arrived so perhaps…
“You said… You lied for him?” Wangji finally asked, wondering if it counted as an attempt at friendliness.
The laughter drained from Jiang Wanyin’s face immediately and his lip curled slightly like he wanted nothing more than to bare his teeth. If he was looking for another fight Wangji wouldn’t give in a second time, that would only hurt Wei Ying more. Yet Jiang Wanyin’s voice was soft and strained like he was forcing himself to speak and it was painful.
“Mom kicked him out after a fight with Dad. She wasn’t really mad at Wuxian but she couldn’t do anything against Dad but she knew kicking him out would hurt him. Jiejie was already living with her husband and I was off to college so she couldn’t actually do anything but yell over the phone. So when the opportunity to rub it in her face that Wuxian was the reason I was so good in classes showed up, I took it. Wanted to hurt her for hurting him.” Jiang Wanyin’s face slipped into a mask of guilt and shame, even two years out of college and the full owner of Lotus he still couldn’t believe he’d been so shitty to his mother. She’d only wanted the best for him but he wanted his family together and when one went missing he cracked the connections to the rest of them. In the end Yanli was the only one he talked to all those long years of college until the beginning of his last semester when Wuxian returned.
“Your parents cut you off?”
“Of course they did, wasn’t Mom though. She thought I was sick or just rebelling, which I was, but Dad was pissed. Still surprised he even remembered I existed once I left the house.”
“You paid for college yourself?”
“Eh? No, I got a scholarship in the first place, parents paid for my business administration degree and the school paid for my art history degree. Do you think I’d be so good at design if I couldn’t pass an art class? The extra scholarship meant I needed another year and a half of school unless I wanted to stuff it all in at the same time. Kept me out of the house long enough for that idiot to come back… Otherwise I probably wouldn’t have gone.”
Lan Wangji couldn’t stop himself from frowning as he looked at the man avoiding his gaze. He really couldn’t get a read on him, which in itself wasn’t that strange he didn’t get most people, but Jiang Wanyin had literally just told him something even Wei Ying didn’t know and Wangji still didn’t know what was going on with him.
He wanted to put Jiang Wanyin firmly in the ‘I only accept they exist when Wei Ying asks me too’ but he couldn’t help but remember the hour and a half prior when they’d been debating painting styles from the 18th century, it had been almost as much fun as speaking with Xichen over painting archetypes. Now he also knew that Jiang Wanyin hadn’t wanted Wei Ying to leave and waited for him to return to the family. As much as Wangji wanted to hate him for all the arguments between the brothers and for not fighting his mother to keep a roof over Wei Ying’s head, he couldn’t quite bring himself to feel it.
“... I..” Wangji started, mentally chanting ‘this is for Wei Ying’, “I do not hate you.”
“Oh that’s a relief.” Jiang Wanyin said sarcastically but he didn’t glare so Wangji took that as a good sign.
“Earlier… When you said no one cares about Wei Ying and I-”
“I meant the gay thing, Wuxian’s always so touchy about it like I didn’t have to share a room with him for thirteen years and hear him when he saw Nie Mingjue for the first time. I thought you were arguing about that.” Jiang Wanyin said so flippantly that Lan Wangji actually felt bad for head butting him.
“Wei Ying is not a disgrace to you or anyone else.”
“I don’t care about that. Who gives a damn about you and him?”
As Wei Ying would say: Oops.
“I see how fighting works now.” Wangji said with a nod to himself. After throwing a few punches, they were both now too tired to argue in the same way and could only listen and communicate. That made a lot of sense even if Wangji would prefer that Wei Ying never need to throw a punch ever again.
Jiang Wanyin gave him a wide eyed look before he barked out a laugh and shook his head as he stood.
“Uh Huh. Sure you do, atleast you and Zixuan will have something to bond over. Wuxian really did break his nose when we were fourteen.” Jiang Wanyin was still smiling at that and Lan Wangji realized he would never understand anyone in his husband’s family. Not really.
“... Xichen has a painting that was recently added to this museum’s collection.” Wangji said, wondering if the olive branch would be taken. They’d started arguing and debating on every painting and hadn’t even managed to get halfway through the actual museum before they’d both had the panicked realization they had started to like each other.
Jiang Cheng gave him a narrowed eye glare before he tossed the bloody napkins away and shrugged.
“Let’s go see it, who knows when Wuxian’ll show up.”
Half an hour was how long it took and Wuxian nearly screamed when he saw them.
“Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan, your face! Jiang Cheng, how could you- Chengcheng your face?!” Wuxian had gasped, holding onto Lan Wangji’s jacket and looking more horrified then the time he’d watched a documentary where the fox ate a rabbit. “You two! How could you- I cannot believe you two- Why are you both looking at me like that?”
Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji shared an amused glance, keeping quiet over Wuxian’s admonishing. Jiang Cheng passed over the drink he’d been holding to Wuxian’s hands and successfully distracted him from his staring.
“Your fiancé has good taste in coffee.” Was all Jiang Cheng said, walking toward Jin Zixuan instead and leaving the dramatics for the one who signed up for it.
“Your brother has rather interesting ideas on color theory.” Lan Wangji said to Wuxian, his lips only twitching into a more fond smile at the hand waving and bewildered look on his fiancé’s face. “We have bonded.”
“You… broke each other’s faces.” Wuxian cried, holding the drink in one hand so the other could cradle Wangji’s cheek and gently stroke over the unbruised skin. “I’m so so so sorry, Lan Zhan, I didn’t realize he’d punch you or I never would have left-”
“There’s no need for apologies,” Lan Wangji said pointedly, gently reaching up to take Wuxian’s hands and press a kiss to the fingertips, “besides, I hit first. It was a misunderstanding. It has been cleared up. I believed him to be looking down on you, he believed me to be ashamed of my relationship with another man.”
“You two.. You two are never allowed to bond again. If I wanted you to punch each other I would have sent you to Huaisang’s brother’s gym to box it out.” Despite his words, Wuxian had relaxed considerably and spared a glance over his shoulder towards his brother. “So… You don’t hate him?”
“No. I do not understand him, but I know he cares about you. That’s all I need to know.” Wangji said with another kiss to his fingertips.
“That’s the best thing I’ve ever heard… Well other than when you confessed, and when you proposed, and when you say my name and-”
Wangji shook his head, shutting him up with a kiss that Wuxian was more than happy to reciprocate.
Jiang Cheng glanced at their disgusting affection and then the very awkward looking Jin Zixuan.
“... Go ahead.” He finally said with a suffering sigh. In seconds, Jin Zixuan was in his face, carefully checking his nose. The moment they’d found out that Yanli was pregnant Zixuan had devoted himself to all forms of emergency medical training just in case anything happened to their baby. In doing that, though, had somehow unlocked his need to use that towards anyone he considered family.
“Okay it’s not broken, and Lan Wangji… I’m sure Wuxian has that handled.” Jin Zixuan said after glancing at the couple and Jiang Cheng really couldn’t blame him.
“Why are you here anyways?”
“A-Li yelled at me to drive Wei Wuxian here.” He said pathetically, like there couldn’t be anything worse in the world than Yanli yelling at him. And he was right.
“Hmm, we should probably call her and tell her that we’re not dead. I broke my phone and Lan Wangji’s.” Jiang Cheng said, holding out his hand for Jin Zixuan’s phone. Jin Zixuan looked like he didn’t trust him but a moment later he gave in and passed it over.
“Uh… I hope you two are getting along now.” Jin Zixuan said, trying for an awkward smile. “I’m glad my family is getting along.”
“You’re not good at this.” Jiang Cheng said bluntly and Jin Zixuan shook his head rapidly.
“No I’m not. Please call A-Li, the stress isn’t good for the baby, and I mean all three of us.”
“God, I hope I die alone.” Jiang Cheng sighed as he clicked on the contact and started to herd Jin Zixuan out of the gallery before the two behind them started getting handsy.

11 with chengxuan please? i hc that jc has a really nice singing voice
Singing together/catching them singing softly to themselves as they cook/do the dishes.
a prequel of this modern AU where Yanli and Wei Wuxian are missing after an accident that left Jin Zixuan disabled
warning for internalised ableism, and also just general ableism mentions
When Jin Ling is five, Zixuan starts working again.
It is not his choice, though he easily convinces himself that it is. His mother is right after all, he can’t go on forever staying at home doing nothing. Sure he’s taking care of Jin Ling, and still dealing with the aftermath of that day, but he can’t do just that, not when he’s clearly well enough to try doing more. His mother doesn’t want him to become a recluse, and she doesn’t want him to get completely out of touch with his father’s company… and she’s right of course.
It’s easier for everyone when she’s right.
Zixuan’s father is a little less enthusiastic about easing his son back into the family business. As he bluntly explains, there’s just not much that Zixuan can do. Going back to his old job isn’t an option. The accounting department, which Zixuan used to be in charge of, has now been given to Meng Yao who is doing very well there, helping the company make a steady profit. Not only that, but Jin Guangshan explains to his son that Meng Yao has uncovered an embezzlement plot that Zixuan apparently accidentally allowed to fester. Wen Ning has been arrested for stealing money in favour of his sister’s charity, and Jin Guangshan explains he had to use all of his influence to protect Zixuan from being dragged into this.
After something like this, it’s obvious Zixuan can no longer be trusted to lead a team. It’s also better if he doesn’t handle anything to do with finances anymore, because their company just cannot bear with another scandal.
Instead, Zixuan is offered a quick formation in web design, and incorporated into the IT team, just another worker among others. It’s work he can do from home, and he’s never met most of his colleagues. None of them seem to realise that he is the son of their employer, and apparently assume the surname Jin is just a coincidence. During a phone reunion, Zixuan hears someone talk about Jin Guangshan’s son who died some years ago, and doesn’t bother to correct it.
His mother can push all she wants, it’s clear Zixuan isn’t going to inherit the company.
It bothers him less than he should. On the rare days when he still hopes that Yanli will return to him, Zixuan tells himself that they can drop everything and start a new life somewhere quiet. Just him, his wife, his son… and his brother-in-law, if Jiang Cheng feels like it. After those last few years, Zixuan can’t quite imagine living without him, and he knows Jin Ling wouldn’t want to either. Jiang Cheng has been there for all his life after all, and theirs is not the worst of lives.
Which isn’t to say that it’s always easy.
Some days are too much for Zixuan.
Today is such a day. His pain is flaring up like crazy, making it agony to sit for long. Jin Ling is in a bad mood, and determined to make it felt. And three urgent projects have been dropped on Zixuan’s hands, to be finished before the end of the week.
What Zixuan wants is to drop his son with Jiang Cheng, take all the painkillers he’s allowed, and sleep for about three or four days until he’s better. It’s not an option, of course. He can’t let down everyone, those projects are important, his mother will be furious if she hears that he’s using his health as an excuse to be lazy, his father will take it as more proof that he can’t be trusted with anything. He has to pull through, pain or not.
People with worse health than him can do their job, he can’t use disability as an excuse.
So Zixuan pushes himself, sitting in front of his laptop until the pain gets so intense he’s starting to see dark spots at the corner of his eyes. He has to do this, has to…
“I think you’ve been stupid long enough,” he hears Jiang Cheng says, surprisingly close to him.
Zixuan startles and looks up, grimacing as the movement pulls on too tight muscles. Jiang Cheng is glaring down at him, apparently more upset than usual.
“You can’t work like that,” Jiang Cheng snaps, dropping a glass of water and a pill next to the laptop. “Take that and go rest.”
“I have to…”
“You have to fucking take care of yourself. You look like you’re about to have a seizure or something. Take that painkiller and sleep before you make yourself worse.”
Zixuan blinks numbly. The medication he takes mostly helps prevent seizures, but it cannot fully eliminate them. He’s been having them more often since he started working again, and has told himself it’s only a coincidence.
“I’m fine,” Zixuan weakly protests. “I’m almost done with this, and then I’ll…”
“Don’t make me pick you up,” Jiang Cheng warns. “I’ll do it. I’ll fucking carry you to bed in my arms, I swear.”
“I’m really…”
“I’ll text Luo Qingyang and tell her you’re sick,” Jiang Cheng cuts him. “She’ll understand, and she’ll deal with this. So take the damn pill and go rest, Zixuan.”
It feels unfair that Luo Qingyang from HR should have to take care of Zixuan’s messes, just because he can’t pull through on single bad day… but the pain really is awful, and it might have been more than one single bad day. Su Minshan from research has been absolutely awful all month about the launch of a new website to showcase their innovations, and since he has Meng Yao’s full support, it’s been hard to deal with him. And there’s that charity dinner coming up, for which he’s also helping develop the webpage even though his father pointedly asked him not to come because even just using a cane would be bad for PR and he can’t make it through the evening without it. And also…
Zixuan sighs. It’s been a rough couple of weeks.
So he gives in, just this time. He takes the pill, and lets Jiang Cheng help him to bed where he promptly passes out.
When he wakes up again, hours must have passed. Night has fallen outside, and there’s no light in this part of the house, though Zixuan can vaguely hear something happening far away, in the kitchen. Although it is very tempting to stay in bed, Zixuan makes himself get up and, leaning hard on his cane, makes his way to the kitchen to check if Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling have had dinner yet.
Before he reaches the door, he’s startled to hear a singing voice.
The voice in question is good enough that he wonders for a moment if it’s not from a video, but the fact there’s no music is odd. Besides, Zixuan recognises that song as being from a cartoon that Jin Ling loves, but he’s never heard that particular version before.
The mystery unfolds when Zixuan steps in the doorway and finds Jiang Cheng singing with abandon as he cuts vegetables that Jin Ling is very carefully washing for him. The little boy seems very happy to be helping, his previous bad mood completely gone. It’s not such a surprise of course. Jin Ling adores his uncle, and Jiang Cheng has mastered the art of finding the line between too rough and too soft when it comes to dealing with his nephew. It always warms Zixuan’s heart to see those two together, but tonight it is almost too much for him.
There’s just something about the sincerity with which Jiang Cheng sings those stupid lyrics, his smile when Jin Ling joins him for the chorus, the happiness they radiate when Jiang Cheng picks up his nephew so Jin Ling can drop the vegetable into the pan… It is everything Jin Zixuan always hoped his family would be, even if it isn’t happening with the person he’d thought he’d live with.
And that’s what hit him hard tonight.
He’s had that thought before, watching Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling. The right amount of domesticity, only with the wrong person.
But Jiang Cheng spots him in the doorway and grins, blushing at being caught singing yet still happy, and Jin Zixuan realises that after five years of living together, he can’t say Jiang Cheng is the wrong person, not anymore.
It probably makes him an awful person. His wife might still be alive somewhere, and here he is, thinking that way about her brother.
He should be ashamed of himself.
He is, but not as much as he ought to be.
So Zixuan drops on a chair at the kitchen table, and smiles to himself as Jin Ling excitedly explains what they’re making, as Jiang Cheng resumes cooking and singing.
When they reach the chorus again, Zixuan too joins in.

we’re doing it to ourselves (or so the saying goes)
(AO3)
Jiang Cheng swears up a storm and a half when he shoves open the investigation room door the next morning to find someone already there.
The red ribbon hanging long down Wei Wuxian’s back blends in so seamlessly with the red thread strung all over the murderboard that it takes slamming his hand against the wall switch to shatter the sudden imagination of his brother’s photo up there with the rest of the clues, just another person they’d failed to save from this case.
Wei Wuxian gives a hiss of half-startled annoyance, blinking from the abrupt brightness, but it frankly serves him right for standing in the dark like a burglar with only the corridor emergency lights filtering in. Had he even been able to see anything? Even demonic cultivation doesn’t give you night vision, last he checked. “Good damn morning to you too, Jiang Cheng.”
“I’m not even going to ask how you got in here,” he replies, because at least half of what he knows about breaking into places he’d learned after Wei Wuxian taught himself how to one boring rainy day in high school. “Tell me all this has nothing to do with you.”
He doesn’t specify what this is, because there’s no need to. Wei Wuxian hasn’t moved from his frozen stance in front of the board of clues, crimson lines running between the serial murders like a bloody taunt, a web Jiang Cheng has stared at long enough over the past week that the afterimage feels burned into his eyelids.
There’s nothing of Wei Wuxian’s usual brash overconfidence in the answering shake of his head. “No. I meant it when I said I’d never go vigilante again, Jiang Cheng. And I haven’t. I’ll swear it again on anything you ask.”
In a different time, Wei Wuxian would already have sworn up and down that the heavens should strike him down right then if he’d lied, but maybe that’s exactly the problem – he had already been struck down once, in almost every way that mattered, and worst of all is how it makes Jiang Cheng more inclined to believe him now.
It’s still not quite enough, though. “Swear it on Jin Ling’s life.”
He doesn’t need to see Wei Wuxian’s expression to know he’s not happy about that. Which doesn’t matter, because neither of them are; the space Jin Ling occupies among them has been almost sacred especially after they’d nearly lost Yanli-jie, but it’s also exactly why Jiang Cheng is asking him to swear on this. He can’t accept anything less.
Wei Wuxian has to know that, too, because he doesn’t argue, only says, “I swear on Jin Ling’s life that I don’t have any direct involvement with this case.”
Jiang Cheng raises an eyebrow and pointedly does not look relieved. “‘Direct’?”
“Duh.” Wei Wuxian gestures, wide and too-careless, at the grotesque web on the wall. “You’ve got a copycat killer, and a surprisingly thorough one at that. I’d be surprised if the original Yiling Patriarch isn’t tied to this somehow.”
“Careful, they might not be able to see your ego from space,” Jiang Cheng bites right back, even though he’s been thinking the same for probably about as long as Lan Wangji has, for all that they hadn’t acknowledged it aloud until the day before yesterday. “How the hell did you even find out about this?”
“Wen Qing did most of the autopsies, didn’t she?” Wei Wuxian answers, pretty much as he’d been expecting. “And before you think about going to yell at her, she didn’t actually reveal any case details to me, just that you and Lan Zhan were investigating something that I might be interested in. Also that she might snap and add one or both of you to the body count if she has to mediate even one more argument between you two.”
How Wei Wuxian’s presence could possibly do anything except exacerbate that, Jiang Cheng has no idea, but it’s not like he can afford to alienate the best medical examiner they have across all the districts. (And he doesn’t want to, either; Wen Qing’s clear expertise had single-handedly silenced all of the brass who’d had issues with hiring a Wen, but there’s never any telling what might get them started up again.)
Still. “I wouldn’t call that mediating,” Jiang Cheng mutters.
Wei Wuxian laughs, because he still doesn’t have even half an ounce of self-preservation, even against someone who could and would immobilise people with just three well-placed needles. “Speaking of which, how much longer are you gonna lurk there, Lan Zhan? I thought the Gusu bureau had a rule against eavesdropping and all.”
Jiang Cheng gets a crick in his neck from how fast he turns, and sure enough – there’s Lan Wangji stepping out of shadows that had hidden him far too well for someone in so much white. (Even after having no choice but to work this case together with him Jiang Cheng still has absolutely no fucking idea how Lan Wangji keeps his clothes spotless even at crime scenes; he’s starting to suspect it’s some kind of cultivation-related trick designed specifically for this purpose.)
“Eavesdropping would require neither of you to be aware of my presence,” he says, like that isn’t just some bit of pedantry, and inclines his head. “Wei Ying. Jiang Wanyin.”
And that’s definitely intentional, putting his name last like Jiang Cheng cares what order Lan Wangji addresses people in. Which he really, really doesn’t, especially not before inhaling at least half the thermos of coffee that always resides in his backpack in avoidance of the acidic slop from the pantry machine.
Wei Wuxian smiles at Lan Wangji, because of course he does, but it’s strangely gratifying to note that he hasn’t put any effort in making it look convincing at all. “Well, Lan Zhan – do I need to swear my innocence in this case to you too?”
“Unnecessary. I believe you,” Lan Wangji says, bearing regal like he’s some monarch issuing a decree, and Jiang Cheng snorts. How easy for him to say that when Wei Wuxian hadn’t cost his bureau and family almost everything they’d been.
It doesn’t make the back of his throat taste any less bitter when Wei Wuxian’s expression warms a little at that, but at this point Jiang Cheng doesn’t think anything ever will. “Enough chitchat,” he snaps. “The paperwork?”
Lan Wangji retrieves a folder from his briefcase and slides it over to the centre of the table wordlessly, while Jiang Cheng crosses his arms and scowls at Wei Wuxian until it sinks through his stupidly thick skull that the paperwork is for him.
The answering groan, at least, is entirely sincere. “What the hell is that for? You know I hate paperwork, Jiang Cheng, I didn’t quit over it but I very well could have.”
Yes, he’s very aware of that, seeing as their weekly paperwork grudge-match marathons from before everything had gone to hell had been held in his office. “Just read and sign the damn thing, Wei Wuxian, it’s the only bloody reason I haven’t already arrested you for breaking into bureau offices ten minutes ago.”
And that has to be enough for Wei Wuxian to already know, because bureau policy hasn’t changed that much in the years since his defection except to get more annoyingly onerous, but still he looks surprised at the contents of the contract. “A civilian consultant?”
“You have a skillset that could be invaluable to resolving this case. It would be highly remiss not to bring you on board.” Lan Wangji still looks perfectly neutral, as far as Jiang Cheng can tell, but that’s more sarcasm-free words in a row than he’s ever heard from him since the start of this investigation. Possibly since their first acquaintance with each other.
“I wouldn’t call ‘being the prime suspect’ a skillset, exactly,” Wei Wuxian mutters, which is something Jiang Cheng can definitely agree with at least. Though the only reason this is possible at all is because there’d never been an official conviction in the original Yiling case, for a whole chaos of reasons including the public uproar in support of whoever had taken down Wen Ruohan and his cronies for good, and because they already had reasonable evidence to suggest Wei Wuxian’s non-involvement in this spate of murders.
The non-suspect in question is still flicking his way through the clauses of the contract, which Jiang Cheng would feel insulted by except he’d also gone through each and every one just as closely, taken his concerns to Yanli-jie who’d taken them to Jin Zixuan until they could be sure this arrangement wouldn’t jeopardise Wei Wuxian in any way.
He reaches the last page, and from the skip of his gaze Jiang Cheng knows instinctively what Wei Wuxian has to be looking at – the grid of signatures starting with his own and Lan Wangji’s as primary investigators of the case, dated clearly to two days before this conversation had even occurred, followed by Lan Xichen’s confirmation both as Lan Wangji’s superior and because Jiang Cheng can’t very well second his own recommendation even as the Yunmeng bureau chief, and finally a space for Wei Wuxian’s chickenscratch initials.
(It’s frankly mystifying, why someone who can draw talismans that flow like the finest art has never bothered with a more elegant signature, but it’s not a mystery Jiang Cheng cares to solve. Better that than the unmistakable signatures the Yiling Patriarch had left at his scenes, at any rate; even he has had nightmares about that.)
Jiang Cheng tosses him a pen, anything to break the sudden silence, and Wei Wuxian catches it without looking but of course doesn’t get right to signing, because that would be sensible. “What is this for, then? There are easier ways to keep an eye on me. Cheaper, too.”
“The forensic evidence is scant, and the culprit has done something to keep the victims’ souls beyond my ability to communicate with,” Lan Wangji answers without further prompting, which is probably more information than they should be giving out to a not-yet-contracted civilian but Jiang Cheng’s not the one with a stick up his ass about protocol in this room and anyway Wei Wuxian had already broken in here. “An alternative method might help.”
“Last I checked, no one likes the alternative when it means resurrecting th– ah,” Wei Wuxian cuts himself off with a flick of his gaze between them, and has the gall to look amused. “So the old coots are desperate enough by now that anything goes?”
“Not anything,” Jiang Cheng grates out, just to be clear. Wei Wuxian hadn’t been wrong; the investigation methods favoured by each bureau differ even just among the four major ones, but the dislike of the way Wei Wuxian had done things since somehow escaping being taken hostage by Wen Chao had been almost universal.
(There’d been a brief period when it seemed like things might work out after all, when Wei Wuxian had demonstrated how undeniably efficient demonic cultivation could be in comparison to their regular methods – even the Gusu musical techniques couldn’t beat speaking to the victim in the flesh, as it were. But then everything had gone to hell in a massive speeding handbasket and Wei Wuxian had been most of the one who’d sent it there.
Possibly Jiang Cheng is being monumentally idiotic in not assuming this time will turn out exactly the same way, but annoyingly enough Wei Wuxian is also correct in that they need this case solved, or everything might just go to chaos anyway.)
“I’m pretty much the definition of anything, I think,” Wei Wuxian retorts, which Jiang Cheng ignores like the obvious nonsense it is. “Don’t blame me if you lot regret this.”
“Pretty sure it’s already too late for that,” Jiang Cheng grumbles, swiping the thermos out from where he’d set his backpack down.
Lan Wangji can deal with filing that paperwork, if he’s just going to stand there in stoic satisfaction. Jiang Cheng needs his damn coffee.

ok ur top faves wangxian fics go
hey yati! 🥰️
alright, so first things first, here’s a big wangxian fic rec list i made a while ago, if you wanna check that one out too! consider the list below part 2. these are all my faves so far since my last rec list (as you'll quickly see, i have a LOT of faves).
and just a fyi/psa/disclaimer for anyone reading this: some of these fics have disturbing themes and/or kinky/freaky sex! make sure to check the authors’ tags and notes before reading. also, much like my first rec list, there’s going to be a mix of mdzs and cql canon, characterizations, dynamics, etc., so bear that in mind.
....ok GO
live from new york by varnes | rated E | 87K words | THE snl au fic!!!! yes, by snl i mean saturday night live. this is perhaps the best and funniest story i've ever read, period. varnes is a fucking genius. read this fic.
Wei Ying lets out a long, ugly groan. “I am fine, Lan Zhan. Everybody is overreacting, it’s so embarrassing for all of you.”
“You had undiagnosed pneumonia, which you walked around with for weeks until you passed out during dress,” Lan Wangji corrects him. “It got a big laugh, until everyone thought you were dead.”
He keeps his voice even and does not tell Wei Ying that it had been Lan Wangji who caught him, who called the ambulance, and who rode with him to the hospital, where he was yelled at by nurses who wanted to know why he hadn’t noticed that Wei Ying couldn’t stop shivering or string proper sentences together.
“Rumors of my demise have been vastly overstated,” Wei Ying says. “Anyway, I’m already feeling much better. Basically fine. Really almost completely back to normal, so stop babying me and tell me why the fuck you let your stupid brother hire the worst man in the world to host our show.”
-
OR: the one where they all work at SNL, Yanli's ex-boyfriend is hosting, and that's just the beginning of everybody's problems.
swiss cheese theory by varnes | rated M | 19K words | sequel to snl au fic!!!!!! another must-read.
The Swiss Cheese model of accident causation likens human system defences to a series of slices of randomly-holed Swiss Cheese arranged vertically and parallel to each other with gaps in-between each slice. Defences against failure are modelled as a series of barriers, represented as slices of the cheese. The holes in the cheese slices represent individual weaknesses in individual parts of the system. The system as a whole produces failures when holes in all of the slices momentarily align, permitting "a trajectory of accident opportunity," so that a hazard passes through holes in all of the defences, leading to an accident.
OR: Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian go to the courthouse.
OR: “Sweethearts,” the city clerk had said, very gently, “you’re already married.”
best friends forever by varnes | rated T | 17K words | alright, so like, strictly speaking, wangxian isn't the focus of this fic, BUT. this fic is so good!! it is seriously so good, and it made me fall in love with jin ling/lan jingyi. also, it's varnes, so read it!
It happened like this: Jin Ling was a sect leader now, which was, and Jingyi really meant this, fucking hilarious. There were few things funnier, in his honest opinion.
Because he was young, and inexperienced, and also — it had to be said — a real shithead, there was apparently some belief amongst his advisors that the best way forward, to promote the picture of a stable, mature sect leader who absolutely did not cry at the drop of a hat, was for Jin Ling to get married.
-
OR: Jin Ling and Jingyi get engaged.
Things spiral from there.
For a Good Time, Call by ScarlettStorm | rated E | 171K words
The picture is of Wei Ying, that much is clear. It’s of a lot more of Wei Ying than Lan Zhan is used to seeing. He supposes that, technically, Wei Ying is dressed. It’s a bare technicality, since one of Wei Ying’s hands has rucked up his black tank top practically to his collarbone, showing a long expanse of abdomen and one nipple. Sweat beads on his sternum, catching the light like jewels. His other hand is--Lan Zhan feels his eyes widen, as though unable to look away from a train wreck--on his hip, one thumb tugging down the waistband of a pair of red briefs. Wei Ying is biting his lower lip and looking directly into the camera, sultry, his eyes dark and inviting. His erection is obvious, outlined against the red of the briefs and framed carefully with the hand on his hip. Lan Zhan’s brain goes wildly, screamingly blank.
Or: Lan Zhan accidentally finds his best friend's OnlyFans account and has an ongoing emotional crisis.
love, in fire and blood by cicer | rated E | 360K words | i actually haven't finished this one since i was reading it when it was a WIP, i need to reread it and catch up fjdskl;fjsd, but i love it very much!!!!!! oh my god he wanted to look nice for his husband..... 🙃 [screams with mouth closed]
"You want Wen Ruohan dead," the Patriarch continued idly. "You want his corpse puppets eliminated. You want his halls burned to the ground and his soldiers disemboweled and begging for mercy. Have I about covered it?"
He gave another knife-edged smile.
"But what will you give me in return?"
"We would be willing to offer quite a bit in return for Wen Ruohan's defeat," Lan Xichen admitted. "But I'm afraid we don't know what an immortal such as yourself desires. Please advise us."
The Patriarch waved at hand at the front of the tent. "I want Second Young Master Lan."
(In which the Sunshot Campaign ends through an arranged marriage to the Yiling Patriarch, and Lan Wangji suffers the mortifying ordeal of falling in love with his own husband.)
how to fall in love with a catfish: a guide by wei wuxian (disaster rat) by bwyn & Yuisaki | rated T | 55K words
A new plan hatches in Wei Wuxian’s head. If this nocturnal, bottom-feeding, slimy, invasive mudcat posing as a beautiful actor thinks he can sway Wei Wuxian with animal pictures and a sob story and an unbelievably stilted way of texting with still no dick pictures in the first five minutes of conversation, he has another thing coming. Wei Wuxian’s got it, alright, he has this in the fucking bag.

Wei Wuxian plots to expose a catfish using strategic memes and turtle pictures while wiggling his way out of family dinner. Lan Wangji just wants companions.

Jiang Cheng stares at him. “Didn’t you say you broke up five months ago?”
“Yeah.”
“So why do you have a picture of you two kissing taped to your fridge?”
“Because we’re too broke for magnets,” Wei Wuxian explains, then considers that statement. “Well, I’m too broke for magnets. Lan Zhan probably refuses to buy them because he’s trying to have lofty ideas about the moral failings of materialism.”

To say that he runs to his car would be incorrect, as he is a Lan, and running is both undignified and unnecessary unless in immediate danger. Nor does he slam his key into the ignition, or aggressively swerve around the cars on the freeway, or have a mild panic attack at the fact he is picking A-Yuan up late from school for the first time ever.
He comes close, though.
By the time he arrives, it’s 4:35PM, and he has imagined about fifty different worse-case scenarios. The door is partly open when he gets to it, a messy label of 104B—Art Room scrawled with chalk on a placard next to the faded wood. As he opens it fully, he expects to see a wailing, terrified child, or perhaps a scene of utter misery and betrayal.
What he finds is his son, hands covered in paint, being sung to by a beautiful, dark-haired stranger.
“Ducks live in the pond, yellow ducks, happy ducks!”

"Betrothed," Wei Ying says indignantly.
Lan Wangji can't stop his gaze from darting up to him. Wei Ying understands. Wei Ying is looking at him, wide-eyed and upset on his behalf.

"I don't even know her," Lan Wangji says quietly.

Wen Qing traps Wei Wuxian in the Demon Slaughtering Cave, but Wei Wuxian isn’t interested in being the beneficiary of the Wen Remnants’ noble sacrifice. His efforts to free himself accidentally send him back to the beginning of the Sunshot Campaign. Coreless but armed with demonic cultivation, knowledge of the future and his wits, Wei Wuxian takes advantage of this opportunity to come out on top of both the war and its aftermath—before either has a chance to happen—by marrying and swiftly burying the cultivation world’s worst men.

Sometimes Lan Zhan doesn’t work through lunch. Sometimes he makes conversation with coworkers in the halls. Sometimes he goes home instead of spending the last hour trawling through Grindr. But mostly, that’s exactly what he does. The sameness is comforting. His life spools out in easily measured increments: capsule collections, yards of hand dyed textiles, ninety day lead times, sell through figures, cost of goods sold.
Every date in manufacturing can be calculated backwards and forward from a single horizon point: the date that the goods must arrive into the country where they'll be sold. Other than that, nothing else really matters.

It’s not real, not exactly: he can tell the difference between a ghost’s touch and a living person’s, between a spirit-vision and an overactive imagination. His education has been thorough. But the beating has also been thorough, so for now he forgets what he knows and leans into it, into the hand cupping his cheek. It’s soft and dry as those forgotten petals, as the touch of a pillow. He can smell wildflowers, can taste blood and dirt. My baby, his mother says, and he closes his eyes. My treasure. He barely remembers the sound of her voice, but the feeling of it is just the same. When Wangji was eighteen he’d walked into the first class of his fall semester painting module and there’d been a boy in a hilariously ugly floppy knit hat sitting cross-legged on the floor at the front of the room. He’d had a sheet of canvas paper taped to his board and his board clamped between his legs and a tackle box of brushes and tubes—a real fishing tackle box, with a fish-shaped logo on it that said BASS, not one of the nice art supply storage boxes they sold in the campus bookstore, like the one Wangji was carrying—open beside him. Everyone else had settled into the rows of stools and easels, but that boy had stayed on the floor for the whole two hour and thirty minute studio. Wangji had looked at him and thought, that idiot’s back is going to hurt.

"It's good," Wangji says. "You look good."

Wangji sits on a stool and watches him, and after a while Wei Ying slaps the rag into the bowl and glares back. “Are you going to sit and stare the whole time?” he demands. “You want to see me strip naked and give my filthy evil self a good scrubbing, huh?”

The power goes out in Lan Zhan and Wei Ying's rural home in the countryside. Lan Zhan takes advantage of the darkness to give in to one of his baser urges, and Wei Ying's first rural power outage experience is about to get a lot more interesting.

“Not a big talker, hm?” Wei Ying tilts his head to one side. “That’s okay, I’ve been told I’m a good enough conversationalist for three. My tongue is multi-talented and—”
He has just enough time to feel her palm on the back of his neck and think, oh, her hands are so big, before his words are being stolen into her mouth.

“Are you done playing around?”
Knowing that’s not what either of them actually wants, Wei Wuxian reaches up to tickle under Lan Wangji’s chin. Soft little scritches, coaxing motions—Lan Wangji is weak to all of them.
“You know what I want,” Wei Wuxian purrs, reaching up on his tiptoes to throw his arms over Lan Wangji’s shoulders. “Call me gege, won’t you? Call me and I’ll stop.”
(or: five times Lan Wangji paid special attention to Wei Wuxian’s interest in being his gege.)

"Anyway, you make it sound like something lewd is going on," Wei Ying complains. "It's all totally above board. She's just being a nice person. It's just one kind alpha grad student offering one room of her huge house to one beta undergrad in need, what could be more appropriate than that?"
// Wei Ying makes a mistake and finds out the hard way.

“Oh?” Wei Wuxian raises an eyebrow. “The forbidden section, Lan Zhan?”
“Mn.”
“You’re not afraid of being heard?” Wei Wuxian thinks aloud. A smirk creeps onto his face, eyes glinting. “Or could it be that Lan-er-gongzi actually wants to be heard? Seen? Caught?” He skips in front of him, blocking his way. "Disciplined?”
Lan Wangji’s ears, as always, betray him.

The reboot completes, and Wei Ying’s brain smashes this information together into two mind-shattering thoughts. Number one, he knew very well already, and is now further seared by defined muscles and a mouth-watering tattoo into his every waking moment: Lan Zhan is the hottest fucking person on the planet.
Number two: that guy wasn’t visiting Lan Zhan’s neighbour, he was visiting Lan Zhan, which means:
Lan Zhan fucks. Lan Zhan fucks. Lan Zhan fucks.
;
Lan Zhan has been Wei Ying's best friend for years. Literally, years. How did he not already know? How has he missed this most important of facts? And more importantly, how is he ever going to get over it?

Lan Zhan falls apart. As it turns out, that's not the end.

Down in the Yi City Pit: A Recs Post
So as anyone following me may have noticed, I’ve been spiraling ever deeper into a pit called Yi City Feelings. I’m down at the bottom and I’m still digging. This also means I’ve been doing a lot of fic reading, and I figure it’s about time that I wrote a recs list, since I said I’d do it and some people expressed interest.
Heads up that I am a dirty Xue Yang stan first and foremost, so this list is going to skew in, uh, that direction. Just so we’re all aware.
Divided these into canonverse recs and modern au recs, since apparently this is the only thing I’ll read modern aus for! It’s a brave new world out here.
Also like. blanket warnings across the board here for The Inherent Dubiousness of Xue Yang/Xiao Xingchen as a Pairing, Generally. I’ll offer more specific/major ones as they’re relevant/I remember, but please check the tags/authors notes as well.
CANONVERSE
lover to your nightmare by Zaatar (@ameliarating) . Xue Yang uses Xiao Xingchen getting sick as an opportunity to fuck around a little. Second person POV sickfic, except XueXiao flavored sickfic which means it’s messy and full of good things like “delirium” and “people taking advantage of other peoples’ confusion and disorientation to mess with them psychologically.” This fic also does the thing I love really well where Xue Yang’s internal monologue/self-justification is full of indications that he’s having Feelings that he neither recognizes nor acknowledges. Crunchy, delicious.
Samsara / 輪迴 by ForgivenMemes. Upsetting fic full of every content warning ever alert! (Off the top of my head: violence, rape, suicide, self-harm.) I keep going back to this fic and rereading it because it hurts so bad and I love it, because it hurts in the best worst self-sabotage recapitulating-mistakes-over-and-over way. Like, I am a sucker for a time loop fic always, and usually I read them as a route to fixing things - but honestly I’ve always loved the part of time loop fics that’s “everything getting worse first.” And this is a whole fic of “everything getting worse.” Aka, the one where Xue Yang has thousands of chances to get it right, but there’s no getting it right.
compromise by Sectionladvivi. Xiao Xingchen convinces Song Lan and Xue Yang to kiss. (aka, obviously Yi City AU where Song Lan gets folded into things, Xiao Xingchen still doesn’t know about Xue Yang being Xue Yang, and an uneasy detente where the two of them don’t touch each other gets interrupted by Xiao Xingchen Wanting Things, which is, of course, a priority always).
til dawn by Sectionladvivi. Xue Yang takes care of Xiao Xingchen’s body after his death, and mind the tags. This is that perfect Yi City level of “horrifying and also very sad, I feel bad for my boy but also he is sort of defiling a corpse (though it is just kissing).” This might not sound like a recommendation but it is absolutely a recommendation.
Our Antebellum Innocence by spockandawe (@spockandawe). First time XueXiao. Xue Yang lays the groundwork for his first time with Xiao Xingchen with meticulous care.  This author always delivers, both in terms of excellent porn and in terms of characterization, and this is no exception.
life’s illusions I recall by Sour_Idealist (@souridealist). The basics of this fic is just “outdoor sex at a river” and it is delicious for that, but what I love about it in particular is this author’s Xue Yang voice. It’s always good (they are the genius behind the incredible Jiang Yanli/Xue Yang fic - no, really), and this is a fic I come back to a lot for that reason. I also love the tag “two characters experiencing two very different fics” which feels like a very apt description for the XueXiao dynamic, generally speaking.
Selenographia by lightningwaltz. A lovely, short-ish fic about the Yi City years. I don’t feel like I have a good description for this one - it’s just one of those beautiful character/moment portrait pieces, very well done.
Stories from A Lonely City by blackwatervial. A series of snapshots/vignettes from the three years in Yi City. Sweetness, bittersweetness, and of course, ultimately, a sad end. This was one of the first Yi City fics I read.
yi city depression hours by glueskin (series). Just. You know. Some feelings. There’s two fics in this one, both short character study type fics making me feel feelings.
a bird caught in this winter blizzard by cherriru. I do love a good grief/mourning fic, especially featuring someone realizing slowly the sheer miserable depths of their fuck-up. Aka, Xue Yang after Xiao Xingchen’s death. It’s just sad.
all I ever knew of love by Sour_Idealist (@souridealist). See what I said above about the Xue Yang voice and this author; this one also featuring blistering hot porn (first time), a little light praise kink, and huddling for warmth as an excuse for sex. It’s a perfect blend of filth and tenderness and I love it.
revelations wallet wood burn art by Sectionladvivi. This one describes itself in the summary as “grim pwp” and yeah, that fits (and also! is such a XueXiao vibe, whoop whoop); it’s based off the simple premise of ‘Xue Yang tells Xiao Xingchen who he is, in the middle of sex.’ Honestly, one of my favorite things about this fic is the ending, which is horrifying in the best possible way.
Your Heart Inside My Hands by williamshooketh (@ectoplasm-james). This fic is fabulously made for me in the specific subgenre of “Xue Yang thinks he knows what he is getting into when having sex with Xiao Xingchen and, it turns out, does not.” This one featuring some of my favorite things including praise kink and Xue Yang getting extremely fucked up by someone being very nice to him.
Sleep Until the Sun Goes Down by spockandawe (@spockandawe). Love me some Xiao Xingchen seducing Xue Yang with candy. First time fic, second person POV, absolutely delightful.
pass the time by short_tandem_repeats (@yiling). A-Qing and Xue Yang bonding hours. I am actually such a sucker for their weird relationship (I don’t poke at it enough in my own stuff, should work on that) and the way they recognize each other in ways that Xiao Xingchen doesn’t, and also a-Qing having to reckon with the ways in which she’s more like Xue Yang than like Xiao Xingchen. Just a very good fic with a delightful a-Qing.
Three Springs by Verbana. Just a really excellent Xiao Xingchen POV of the three years in Yi City and a developing relationship between Xiao Xingchen and Xue Yang. Beautifully written, a lovely escalation, and I’m absolutely delighted by the gentle loneliness of the Xiao Xingchen POV here.
Red Azalea by CeNedraRiva (@cenedrariva) (WIP). A longfic in progress following the continuing adventures of the Yi City Crew after Xiao Xingchen survives his suicide attempt and Xue Yang reconsiders some life choices. Recently got tag-updated to SongXueXiao which has me absolutely thrilled. Updates every Wednesday.
ephemeral by im_krying (WIP). Xue Yang, traveling around wearing Xiao Xingchen’s face, decides it is time to go looking for the last remaining part of Xiao Xingchen that he doesn’t already possess. That is to say, the eyes in Song Lan’s head. I’m really curious where this is going - it smells up my alley at this point though it’s been a bit since the last update.
Heaven Has a Road But No One Walks It by Silvestris (@silvysartfulness) (WIP). Things I love: beating on Xue Yang, SongXueXiao, terrible road trips, fix-its where there’s a lot of suffering involved. Things this fic has: all of the above. I’m in love.
MODERN AU
(There are other recs to this one but for various reasons (pwp reasons) triggered my self-consciousness slightly too much to put on this post. Go check my bookmarks, you’ll find stuff there.
Most of these are PWP to greater or lesser extents (Rewritten and Misalignment are, I’d say, the exceptions); all very hot and fantastically written.)
circling like vultures by brawlite (@brawlite) (series). Truly quality porn, featuring mostly Xue Yang/Song Lan both pining for Xiao Xingchen, which is a thing that it turns out I really like. The sex is rough and mean and I’m really into it. (Okay, mostly the sex in the first one is mean, the second one is actually XueYao, and the third one is actually verging on nice. Wow! Growth. Anyway, it’s all very good and very My Scene.
Rewritten by incendir (series). This series is like. Everything I want from a modern AU and that was true even before the most recent fic gifted me a beat up Xue Yang suffering, so you know. I don’t have a good summary for this series other than that it’s basically a married Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen adopting Xue Yang as a third partner and it’s just. So well done, such good writing, such good characterization, I would read 20,000 more words of this and probably still be hungry.
catalyst by Ajaxthegreat. If there is a porny fic I’ve reread more than this one, I’m not sure what it would be. I’ve reread this one a lot. It’s very good. It’s very hot. I’m trying not to be self-conscious. SongXueXiao first time rough sex and boy is it tasty.
biting the bullet by Sectionladvivi. Xiao Xingchen doesn’t want to have to choose between his two boyfriends and so he doesn’t. Sectionladvivi in general writes some very sexy modern au PWP (including a few different Xue Yang/Lan Wangji fics which...didn’t see that one coming! But it works when they do it), so general rec for author but this one (as, you know, SongXueXiao porn), is one of my favorites, probably.
sxx configurations by rynleaf (series). This is a SongXueXiao series on AO3 based off of @kevinkevinson‘s modern reincarnation AU and I am in love with both the art for that AU (go look!) and these fics, they’re so good, I’ve reread several times.
Misalignment by Kasasagi (WIP). The one with a reincarnated Xue Yang and a Xiao Xingchen who arrives in the modern world from the past, fresh off his suicide.
And Once Again, if I’m Allowed to Rec My Own Fic
a kindness you can’t afford. Early days in Yi City after Xue Yang wakes up.
lick your exit wounds. I wanted canonverse-era bottom Xue Yang praise kink, so I wrote it for myself in the hopes others would also find this an interesting prospect.
this place could be beautiful. Xue Yang vs. domestic living.
tear out all your tenderness. Xue Yang gets turned on by murder and makes it a project to get Xiao Xingchen to lose control.
the beauty of your repair. PWP, modern AU SongXueXiao; there’s not an inkling of plot here, it’s really just an excuse to get Xue Yang wrecked, but nicely.
