[MDZS] Understanding in Context

Sooooo, I never thought I'd be here, but recently I started reading Montaigne and IDEK man.

The reason I decided to write this post is because I think when people read MDZS specifically in the English side of the fandom they often neglect to see the whole story in the context of ancient China. I'm not saying I'm an expert on this, so I would love to be corrected if I'm wrong, but I specifically wanted to discuss an action from Jiang Cheng.

As people know, one of the biggest betrayals he committed is not protecting Wen Qing's faction (not the word I'd use but yeah), while Wei Wuxian did. Well, I think this is often more multi-faceted than people think it is.

Think about it, the Wen family killed JC's entire sect and family, even if it wasn't WQ's branch. So no matter what, JC as one of the last surviving members and heir to the sect is morally obligated to kill them to avenge his family. Then, people often bring up the debt he should owe to Wen Ning for saving him, which is where it gets difficult and muddy. Because while *technically* he does have a debt to WN, at the same time, WN saved JC for WWX (I think so? Correct me if I'm wrong please) so WWX has more of a debt than JC? and WWX fulfilled it. Of course, JC should to an extent still owe them, but then that would directly contest the whole societal pressure/obligation for him to avenge his family.

Therefore, despite WQ's whole faction being innocent, it makes sense that JC would still choose to be hostile to them, from both personal, societal and cultural reasons (remember, he was also playing a political game the whole time that WWX wasn't).

The final argument I've seen is also that JC can easily make the whole sects spare WQ's faction by saying he owes WN a debt from saving him and ???? That is simply not true??? Just because WN saved JC DOES NOT mean that the rest of the sects should forgive them for the other atrocities that the Wen family committed in the war (ie. burning the Lan sect). All it would do is have the Jiang clan killed for good, and obviously JC CAN NOT have that happen.

Basically tldr, the situation is a lot more complicated than most people give it credit for and people need to acknowledge that.

Man these boys are really bad at feelings. I chose who I thought was the biggest tsundere from each book, but let me know if you disagree and think there is a much bigger tsundere than these 3. (I guess you can argue Shen Jiu over Shen Yuan, but SJ is only a tsundere for YQY and does actually hate everyone else)

I really want to recc some fics rn but I don't have it in me to write a full list so I'm just going to recommend my favourite Jiang Cheng fic. As always I recommend that you read the description the fic gives you cause I only tell you what I like about a fic, I'm not good at plot summary!

This is a character study fic of JC but we get to see some character complexities within the juniors as well. We get to see JC interact normally when he isn't being WWX aggro, we can see him be more than his anger and grief but it's still there. As he's with the juniors we can how he's invested in helping people in his gruff, tough love kind of way. Throughout the fic as JC is helping OYZ (Ouyang Zhizheng) navigate his clan duties we also learn more of JC's struggles of re-establishing his sect through the sunshot campaign. I don't think the fic completely absolves any wrongdoing that JC does/did but he isn't as aggro in this fic as he is in the novels and I feel like that makes sense from how the novel ended (not including extras, I did not read those). OYZ does get a really good amount attention in the fic and it's nice to see him get a plotline (my boy is slept on). The characters that are focused on in this fic are the juniors, JC, and some Wen Ning. We get character moments from all of them. Also this is an outsider POV so we don't get to see JC's internal monologue. We only see his actions and what he says, babyy! (why are outsider POV fic some of the best character study fics btw? like what's up with that)

Prelude to this. This au will continue now, i might even turn it into a fic...maybe...

Cause my hand writing is crappy and so are my dialogue here's basically what's happening:

Jiang Cheng wants WWX to go back to Lotus Pier, but isn't willing to risk upseting the other sects (especially the Jins) by protecting the Wen renmants, he's still rebuilding and doesn't think the Wens are worth the risk. He's also unsure how to feel about having them in Lotus Pier because of it's destruction.

Jiang Yanli argues that if the other sects are the problem she can help. Jin Guanshang is old and Madam Jin wont mind (helping) (she's planing murder so Jin Zixuan becomes the new sect leader). And that if they show that the Wens are just harmless refugees the Nie and the Lan won't care to retaliate cause they are also recuperating from the war. The Yin Tiger Seal is a problem cause it's a really dangerous weapon and everyone wants it so the best option is to destroy it, the Lan would agree, and with JZX in power so would the Jin and the Jiang, the Nie probably would too but even if they didn't they would be outvoted. The main reason why WWX hasn't destroyed yet it's cause it's his bargaining chip against the other sects threats (that thing is basically a nuclear weapon) therefore making a multilateral treaty of protection is the fair option (where the sects promise to not attack the Wen in exchange for the destruction of the seal, to not attack each other while they're are rebuilding(that one probably already existed) and if one is attacked the others gotta protect them) That way WWX would have no reason to keep the seal and would help destroying it, (he probably would start planing to destroy it once he was sure he had the protection of the Jin and the Jiang.)
