Ngl I haven't found any trans allegories that hit for me because they're all too focused on like. Ideas of a "true self" and performing gender and the like for my autistic ass. My true self doesn't have a gender; when I say I'm a man, that is just as much of a lie as when I say I'm a woman, I just feel significantly more comfortable with lying that I'm a man than any other options. That or it's like. About physical modifications of some sort. Which I really dislike as a trans allegory outside of like . A specific person's experiences or something. Because I hate the idea that transness is hinged on extremely modern medical technology that so many still do not have access to, or that gender and one's physical body are at all inherently related. Which. Because it's allegory it is imprecise and tends to fall into those sorts of unfortunate pitfalls. Not that I think all trans rep has to be like. A character looking into the screen and saying I Identify As Transgender. If that doesn't make sense for the setting, okay, try to figure out language and context that does! Especially with fantasy there's so much room for interesting worldbuilding if you include actually trans characters instead of just metaphors.

Idk it just kinda sucks getting things about me relegated to only allegory and metaphor. There's some things where I think it works fine, like neurodivergence, but it just. Doesn't hit with trans stuff for me for some reason. Give me medieval fantasy trans men with tits because the technology for top surgery doesn't exist but hairy chests because alchemy reasons(tm). Give me worldbuilding that accounts for how different cultures handle gender variance. There's so many matrix type stories and shapeshifters and androids and those are great but it feels Bad when metaphor is all there is and then the metaphor/allegory/what have you is all about a fundamentally alien experience. Sorry this got so long woops

watched more avatar with my best friend and also started SU (expect me ranting abt how much I love that show sometime, my favorite characters are peri (for the feral autistic aroace rep) and ruby (for the unhinged adhd hopeless romantic rep) both of which represent me deeply) BUT that isn't what this post is about I'm talking abt zukka today!

Okay so. Transmasc zukka. Hear me out. We already know that zuko is transmasculine right? He's got the tboy emo energy, the shitty first haircut and then shaves it and it grows out cute and fluffy, and he just has the right vibes. Plus his dad sucks and his clearly transmasculine uncle (iroh IS an elder trans man fight me) is very protective of him. His journey of self acceptance and growth just seems very gender-y to me, like he has to evolve past what his father has taught him about himself and the world and accept his true nature (in the show his true nature is good rather than evil, but that translates decently well). He's also. Literally just autistic. I don't need to explain this, he's autistic the way peridot is, like it's so fucking obvious that it's hard to believe it could have been unintentional (I straight up do not buy that peridot wasn't intended to be autistic, with zuko I can maybe let it slide but I don't want to).

Now for the part that I'm excited about!! So we know that Sokka has his misogyny arc, which a lot of people would assume rules out trans sokka pretty entirely unless you want to change that, but I honestly think it makes a lot of sense. He always wanted to emulate his father and the warriors in his tribe, and his only reference for masculinity was that type of warrior energy, so he assumes the two are inextricably linked- you have to be a man to be a warrior and a warrior to be a man. This is also why he's obsessed with protecting his family and being 'the man of the village' basically. He thinks that that's what makes him masculine. His desperation to prove his masculinity to himself and others is what ends up driving him down the path of Being An Asshole To Women, and suki's arc with him is still about how femininity can be strong and powerful, and how feminity and masculinity can coexist, and nothing 'makes' him a man except for him being one. Idk I like it a lot

Potentially mildly unhinged rant time :] it's about fat representation

Being like chubby/fat like really makes you realise how few fat characters are in fiction, like I'll be like "I wanna see myself represented" and then all there is comic relief number 69 or insecure woman number idek there's too many or they're fat but it's their entire personality, or they're fat but they aren't actually body standards are just insane, like COME ON MAN. Then the few characters who aren't stick thin fans make skinner or buffer if it's a man who has some muscle, OR alternatively if the character is a woman they'll make her waist smaller and her boobs bigger, also as a trans man WHY IS THE SKINNY ONE IN A SHIP ALWAYS TRANS IN FANDOM the other one won't even be fat they'll just have a little muscle or a little chub but it's always the fucking twig fans decide is trans. Obviously the lack of plus size rep is a problem with the original media but then fans somehow make it worse.

It's also crazy seeing like shows praised for their diversity have no fat characters, like Arcane had maybe 2 fat people one of them died like really early on and one of them didn't even talk iirc she was just a backgrounder (ig you could count Vander but he's either missing or a wolf, also ig there's the guy Vi keeps punching too). Why is one of the only shows I can think of with a variety of different plus size characters Total Drama, and even then it's rooted in stereotypes because Total Drama's whole deal is the characters are stereotypes, but hey at least they were diverse with it. Also fat characters are always so sexless and it's weird, like WWDITS they've got Guillermo, that show is horny as fuck, he never really gets in on any of it and I think that's also connected to him being gay (I could write another entire rant just on my opinions on the queerness in WWDITS) (yes you could say Laszlo is fat but he's also played by Matt Berry and all his characters are just the horniest men alive he's just generally the exception to this).

Also have y'all ever seen those lists of like "our favourite plus size characters" and then it's like real fucking people? Like it's cool to see fat people be successful in like tv and music and film but also like THOSE ARE REAL PEOPLE WHY ARE THEY ON A LIST OF CHARACTERS ????? Like that's not the same thing, nobodies making like lists of gay characters and then including irl gay actors.

Also jesus christ I've been watching so many 2000s movies and shows lately and its so insane how fatphobic that shit is, I watched an episode of Smallville, this girl was being called a whale, they had her actress in fat prosthetics… they revealed she was 160lb… THAT'S 70KG I HAVE SKINNY FRIENDS WHO WEIGH THAT MUCH, these fucking movies will call women with thigh gaps fat, like it's unhinged. And yes I've been aware of the fatphobia in the 2000s for years but it becomes insane to see when like all you've been watching is shit from the 2000s.

Um anyway my point was the lack of fat rep in media is kinda crazy and it's been driving me mad lately because at least other rep I can find in fandom, trans rep, gay rep, autistic rep, it's in fandom… fat rep isn't. And just for a Monster High example what fat rep there is fans will attempt to erase, I've seen G3 Catty and Draculaura rebodies (and Drac isn't even fat if we're being honest, she just has thick thighs), I keep seeing fanart of them skinny, I saw someone not rebody a G3 Catty but fully customise a G3 Toralei to look like Catty, like it was insane, not even kids media is safe from fandom being actively fatphobic and somehow it hurts more because as a child G3 Catty and Draculaura (and Abbey, she hasn't been mentioned yet because weirdly she seems to avoid the fatphobia) would've meant so fucking much to me.

My Alice Oseman books ranking (from my least favourite, to my favourite and why). I love them all. This post will contain spoilers.

7) Loveless

I liked it, I'm not saying I don't. Simply I'm not aroace, so I can't fully understand what do people feel when they are aroace. My favourite character is Pip, I loved her so much. I also loved Georgia.

6) Nick & Charlie

I felt bad for Nick and Charlie, because when you read about them you think they are the perfect couple, but they obviously aren't (perfect couples don't exist). But when they had that argument I felt bad.

5) This Winter

I loved to see the multi POV of Tori, Charlie and Oliver. Since I have an ED it's a little triggering, but it's interesting.

4) Solitaire

This is the first book written by Alice Oseman when she was 17, so it's not perfect. I love Tori and Michael relationship (platonic and not romantic). But the things regarding Solitaire didn't catch my attention and I found them a little confusional. It is good to see something about mental health. It's not a book for sensitive people and it's pretty dark compared to others.

3) I Was Born For This

This book has two points of view: the Angel's POV and the Jimmy's one. Angel Rahimi is a huge fan of the Ark, a band. Jimmy plays in that band with his friends Lister and Rowan. In the story we can see how some stars live their fame, and Jimmy struggles with anxiety disorders. We also have queer rep because Jimmy is a trans man and Lister is bi.

2) Radio Silence

Frances Janvier is a girl who is trying to become headgirl of her school. Aled Last is her quiet neighbor with a secret. Frances loves a podcast named "Universe City" and when she knows her neighbor is the creator of that podcast she loves, they start collaborating. But things are going to complicate. I think Aled is an autistic rep, and other reps are: bisexuality, demisexuality (aspec), homosexuality, etc... Aled is my favourite character.

1) Heartstopper

Nick and Charlie go to the same school but they have never talked to each other. When they meet in the same class they start their friendship, but then they fall in love. Nick questions his sexuality and learns he's bisexual. Charlie has to fight against his ED. This is the only comic Alice created and is the book that made me discover the others. It made me happy and when I read it, I felt less lonely with my struggles. I love Charlie, he's so me and he is my favorite character ever.

Representation in MoaH (& GoS)

I don't like to tag my works with a lot of the rep tags they normally would/could have. Personally, from publishing the first book in Word Walkers, my experience is that those tags are more often used to blacklist works and I don't think people should get the opportunity to pretend that queer people, BIPOC people, disabled people don't exist by flagging that. Also like. As a white person, I feel a little weird being like "Look at all my BIPOC characters!" It feels a little virtue signally to me. Telling good stories should just include diverse casts because the world is diverse. You know?

Further, in my experience, particular with Wattpad at the moment, I have a platform to give people the 101 to a lot of these concepts (in particular queer and disability rep, which are my communities) and change their minds that they would have otherwise missed if they'd stayed in their bubble. It does mean you probably won't see things like neopronouns in my works, but if I can change someone's mind about they/them being singular, that's a start. I have a lot of ESL readers according to my stats on Wattpad and translating that can be difficult. But if my work can be a gateway for them learning what that means, that's more good done.

Also, my fics attract a lot of eggs so like. Y'all are finding me anyway, I don't need the tags.

Anyway, here's some of the confirmed rep in book 1 of MoaH and in GoS if y'all need a reference though for what is blatantly in the works so far.

Queer Rep

Marela is a lesbian and in a relationship with Saddiqah by the end of book 1

Link & Saddiqah are both bi-icons (confirmed in the Din's Temple arc) with femme preferences

The fortuneteller in Lake Town (Hart) uses she/they pronouns

The tour guide (unnamed) in Lake Town uses they/them pronouns

Zelda's middle sibling is transmasc, though he is not reintroduced as such until book 2 for plot reasons. His identity and the story around it is given a serious storybeat and is one of the reasons why MoaH Link is my only Link I firmly will say is a cis man, because I'm making a point of in having Link as an example of healthy masculinity (as a cis man) for a trans kid trying to find a role model on it. The series does not use his deadname again though after Link finds out in book 1

They show up later in book 1, but there's a gay couple in the Marksmen, Sorol and Kutt

That's just book 1. I've got an enby knight and an enby Goron in book 2. I've also gone over how some of the Gerudo naming conventions work in my worldbuilding posts to include enby rep like the Gerudo word for nonbinary, vyu, though Dirjaani Gerudo culture doesn't come up in the books until book 3.

Over in GoS, Endeavor is actually a huge part of my coming to terms with my own gender. Originally published with she/her pronouns, the current edits are giving Endeavor they/them pronouns to accurately reflect what I didn't have the language for in high school when I started writing GoS. Endeavor is agendered.

Link has ADHD with anxiety symptoms, chiefly social. This is an intentional conversation on courage and how we define it.

Zelda is autistic. MoaH Zelda is also plus-sized.

Floan is auADHD, she has a special interest in bugs

Kaju, the son of Lake Town's steward, has a prosthetic leg

Ambrose has severe motion sickness (horseback riding is about the most he can handle, but he will not fight on horseback)

Not strictly a disability, but it's a point of worldbuilding that most Hyrulean lineage Zora don't do well in the cold, so there are accessibility enchantments made to allow for traveling extensively in colder regions.

Also not strictly a disability, but sign language is much more widely taught in Hyrule. It's a mandatory lesson for the Marksmen for tactics reasons, so Ambrose, Saddiqah, and Link all have at least a conversational level of fluency in it if not better.

Back in GoS, Link's granddad Lynard uses mobility aids.

Parijan, Guardian of the Spirit Sage, is blind.

Saruo, Priestess of Courage, has anxiety. Again, I like messing with the definition of courage.

BIPOC Rep

Ok, admittedly. MoaH is a little light here. But! In my defense, it's because I want the worldbuilding of MoaH to code countries and cultures with certain ethnicities and not races/species (i.e. the Gerudo aren't just automatically Middle Eastern, there are several cultures where Gerudo are prominent members with multiple influences). So in Hyrule, where the primary culture is Hyrulean coded European generic, there aren't as many opportunities for coded characters ethnically because that's not how I'm handling it. There are characters who are BIPOC, but it feels like a bit of a cop out to include them because then I just list off all the Gerudo who show up because their POC and that feels a little cheap. I am including them too, but I want to preface that other regions of this series are going to be better at this particular beat (I circle back to the enby knight, who is also BIPOC of Faronan-Dirjaani heritage, but that's book 2).

Basic ones, there are three major Gerudo characters in book 1: Saddiqah El Amin, Dragmire Al Iber, and Ayad Al I'Tidal. They are all of the more standard Hyrulean-Dirjaani lineages closest to canon expectation. Dirjaani cultures are influenced by Middle Eastern and North African cultures, so they are all women of color.

Saddiqah in particular, and this gets into spoilers so I'll be brief, is specifically coded to be a biracial woman. For reasons that come up in book 3. It's why her horse, Ajan, has a Creole name which is outside of the typical naming conventions I'm grabbing for the Hyrulean-Dirjaani names.

The Sheikah are coded as Japanese in the games, so Impa is coded as Japanese along with the Hyrulean Sheikah. Sorol is also a Hyrulean Sheikah, so this applies for him too.

The Dreeka in Hyrule are generally coded to be an indigenous group. Because of their relationship with the Sheikah, primary influence there is the Ainu. This includes all of the Dreeka characters introduced in MoaH (Constant, Temperance, Clarity, etc.) as well as the Drex in GoS (Endeavor, Justice, Zeal, etc.)

Over in GoS, Parijan and Dabir are both Middle Eastern coded, we are aiming to be more specific in the edits.

Sayyida and Daniel are both black.

This is loose canon, but I think there's a real read to GoS about making Link black because of the nameless and the felons' rights allegory that that is meant to be. I will not confirm it because Link is meant to be a stand in for the reader and how they see him, but I do like the interpretation.

And again, this is just book 1. There are nine books planned, there will be more.

WIP Introduction: Fate is Just the Half of It

Two hundred years after Earth was engulfed in nuclear fire, Rowan Woods wakes up from cryogenic sleep in the wreckage of his Orbital Ark. As he stumbles through the brave new (and still somewhat irradiated) world, he learns that the man he loved pre-apocalypse may be, impossibly, alive today.

The man in question, genius industrialist Jack Howard, has been given a new life as a self-aware android by the mysterious scientific collective known as the Agency. Earning his keep as the chief engineer of the Agency’s moon base, Jack has no reason to think that Rowan is alive and looking for him. But his obliviousness has never stopped Rowan before.

This is the story of two people who found each other after the end of the world.

Genre: sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, queer romance

POV: 3rd person limited, alternating between two main characters + snippets of diary in 1st person

Status: writing first draft, planning to start serialized release in 2024

Themes: survival and resilience, love and loss, humanity and identity

Vibes: character-focused, dialogue-heavy, angst with a happy ending, some existential moments, soft sci-fi (bordering on science magic where it's necessary to enable plot)
