Everyone thought Layton was in charge. Everyone thought The war was fought on His terms. But it couldn't be farther from the truth.

In reality, Layton was a wild dog, on a very short leash. Pike and Zara took turns holding the leash, handing off and they felt they couldn't handle it anymore. His energy was relentless; pulling and yapping and gnashing his teeth at any threat. Even the threats that weren't threats.

Zara was better calming him down. Pike was better at redirecting him. She could take his energy, redirected it to miles, to mama grande, to old Ivan. To the rat breeding and rationing. He could take his anger at the cannibals, redirect it into a strong commander.

But eventually they both broke. Pike defected to the back, Not surprising when you consider the stress he was under. Zarah defected to the front, willing to whore herself out to escape this hell.

And in the end, it was Layton. All alone. Left to do what nobody else was willing to.

so many ways a character can be dog-coded. stray following someone home and begging for scraps. old and needs to be put out of its misery. attack dog. guard dog. lap dog. puppy that pees on the carpet from excitement. shelter dog just happy to finally have feet to curl up on. unsocialized that bites anyone trying to show kindness. silly goofy puddle monster. obedient until the leash comes off
