OK this will be an extremely long ask i am sorry. i love radford

i havent sent an ask to people in years but i am one of the radford fans of all time and demonic possession is a fun concept to me, so the idea of gadreel possessing him specifically makes me INSANE

i just think itd work extremely well. radford doesnt take anything seriously and doesnt understand boundaries, but he always puts his concern for others first and his well-being last. he annoys father gregor and compares him to priests hes seen in the movies, and he does spray holy water + offer free candy against kevins wishes, but he also warns rick about the trouble he could get himself into when not giving the right movie tickets, and helps kevin with his job with no pay in mind. hes annoying, but his heart is in the right place

but gadreel is the Ultimate Prankster. him trying to imitate radford would backfire Hard, because gadreels idea of fun is,, More Extreme. he allows kids to enter adult films, he steals candy and says its fine since hes friends with kevin, he tells his friends and brother to break the rules and disrespect authority, etc etc. im unsure what gadreels motives are other than to ruin everyones day, but hes doing a damn good job at it. all the blame is going to radford, and honestly, its just So Easy to blame him for it

i imagine it takes a while for most people to figure out that somethings wrong with radford. he does what he wants freely, wherever and whenever, so these mistakes could be rationalized by him having an off-day. i assume rad would look extremely tired after a days long session of gadreel torturing him (because he loves pushing the human body. bill cipher behavior). but i think what makes everyone truly concerned is when "radford" starts involving Others in his antics

it isnt like rad to encourage bad behavior. he would never tell rick to swap the prices of two items at his new job, or tell robert the best blind spots to steal from stores, or forcing kevin to take his anger out on someones property. the radford everyone knows is ditzy, but kindhearted. if theres trouble, radford would be the only perpetrator

and god, imagine how much worse it gets if "radford" gets in trouble with the police. john would be frustrated seeing his own nephew be so careless and cruel all of a sudden. itd probably even make him spiral and assume the cult had something to do with it, and that john and his family arent safe like he thought. and i think gadreel relishes in that knowledge

im also so curious as to how gadreel and radford met and how long the possession lasted, maybe it was a week? in my head, he came to radford in the form of a snake before revealing his true self and attacking, leaving no time for rad to fully process it and run away. i also assume skid and pump will have some involvement, and pumps eyes turning blue will be a clear sign that "radford" is associated with a demonic entity, or Is one. either way i love gadreels character being a "twisted" version of radfords if that makes sense

yes i imagine the possession lasted about a week, week and a half. Gadreel can't feel pain (at least Radfords pain i mean, he has a higher pain tolerance, as a demon yknow) so he could very well accidentally snap a bone as Radford and not even notice. patrick hockstetter analysis hi, i realize there was spelling mistakes on my henry bowers one but i'm really too lazy to go over it all and fix em so if theres some on here too then ignore it! don't come at me for the hypothetical disorders i'm saying patrick may have, i do believe he probably is on the spectrum somehow and i will not listen to anyone who says otherwise.

patrick is SO INTERESTING, the disorders that i suspect he has is possibly CIPA as he doesnt show much reaction to pain and possibly some sort of BPD or autism but im more sure of CIPA. but it's confirmed for him to have solipsism he doesnt think other people or things are real, the reason he killed his little brother avery is because he felt avery was real and his parents were taking attention away from him. he doesnt like deviating from his schedule, he expects dinner to be at the same time, parents to be in bed at a certain time every day but the baby took away from that and so he suffocated avery to death. i believe he also has a sort of god complex as he thinks he decides what happens in the world. he doesnt think him harming people and animals matters because they aren't real anyways and meerly toys for him so he doesnt get bored. we don't get a lot of background on patrick let alone his parents but the movie gives us jack-shit about him. he's obviously a pyromaniac and doesnt seem to have any reaction to pain, laughing when henry hurts him after patrick sexually assaults him. he has a sort of psychosis, he doesn't love anyone besides himself but its not in a narcissistic way. he doesnt really have attachments to anyone, his family could die and he'd just be worried about whats for dinner. he'd only be upset cause it ruins his schedule. He would be upset if bowers gang died but simply because they bring him entertainment and its someone to bully kids with. I feel he probably was subjected to some sort of trauma when he was younger, possibly sexual or some form of neglect. people arent usually born acting how patrick does and all the adults shown in derry seem to be abusive or neglectful. his favorite past time is to torture kids and animals, he enjoys taking their lives, he has a fridge full of tortured animal corpses, mainly cats. since the fridge is his favorite thing it gets used as a factor of his demise, after sexually assaulting henry he goes to his fridge and is killed by pennywise. he loves to spend time at the barrens/junkyard since thats where a lot of the violence happens, those places being frequent bowers gang hang out spots. Bowers gang is scared of him, most adults are too. theres rumors floating around of patricks hobbies so people often let him do whatever he wants as to not agitate him. I dont know if victor and belch exactly know about the fridge as its a little hidden away in the junkyard but henry knows, when patrick teases henry for "letting him" sexually assault him henry shouts "if you fucking tell anyone about this im telling everyone about your fridge and you'll be taken away" or something similar. Henry keeps him around since 1, hes deeply scared of patrick and doesnt want to anger him 2, he also finds ways to entertain henry, helping him blow off steam from the abuse at home on other kids and sometimes animals. henry seems to be a big fan of animals but when he starts to go crazy after patrick dies he shows similarities to patricks behavior, growing violent with dogs and cats and being more murder-driven with his bullying. patrick seems kind of obsessed with henry but it could just be finding henry useful or a good source of entertainment and he can torture henry to end up getting what he wants. patrick is only fueled by his own selfish desires, he has no exact motivation for doing anything, other than him deciding he wants to. psychosis can be drawn out by not sleeping sometimes and maybe patrick could suffer from hallucinations, in the movie it seems he's scared of what he's killed coming back to life but honestly i dont think thats really accurate as i dont think that is something he would think about and he already feels no guilt about it so i think it was just the movie being stupid again. so if he does have hallucinations i think he would be indifferent to them, maybe only being annoyed they arent always at the same time every day.

jackson storm didnt even want to be a racer. he was completely fine with being an e-sports player. but he was extorted by a guy that ended up firing him anyways so here we are

because of that, jackson has the world's weirdest form of imposter syndrome. he doesnt belong here. hes the best racer there is. he shouldve been racing since he was a child. he hates being a racer. he wouldnt trade it for the world. he wishes he could be just a gamer again. etc etc

he never really compliments himself, though. he needs to tear someone else down to lift himself up. he needs someone thats "worse" than him before he can boast about how great he is. deep down, he doesnt like being a racer, and he feels that the racing world doesnt deserve him

he also never lets himself feel. hes always distant and his emotions are always disconnected from the present. this started out as a way to avoid having angry outbursts but now he feels shallow. his losses arent painful but his wins arent rewarding. meeting a fan feels the same as meeting a hater. everything just feels.... insincere

i really only watched this bc charithra was in it, but also sometimes you just get in the mood for a cheesy teen romcom.

1. anyway. i hate archie’s character. he is the worst friend ever. like are you sure you like her??? bc hes so mean to her. he basically called her an ugly loser and made her fucking cry and then STILL chose to pretend to be the love doctor, lie to her face, and saboutage her the entire process.

2. that scene where amelia does the whole school girl outfit and then struts past everybody is so cute love her character. i’m so mad it didnt end well for her then they called her splat face girl like yall are DEAD WRONGGG lmaoo

3. yknow ik shes crazy for being in love w/ billie after 10 hours but hes fine as hell so i mean.. i get it.

4. mean girls in movies need to have better digs. they were not intimidating. Propaganda post about my fave medias time! [#1]

Hiiii, I just wanna talk about and recommend some things I like on my blog here! I don't always draw fanart for everything that I like and find inspiring, but I like sharing what I feel are gems with others. (the gifs im adding arent mine)

I've got a small handful of movies that involve animals and a predator+prey relationship, with plenty of cute moments mixed with heart-aching moments. They're all animated kids movies with the potential to hit pretty hard. There's something tragic to the way each movie acknowledges nature and has a character try and fight the standard order of things.

One Stormy Night

Over time, this one has become my favorite of these. This movie can provide such an unexpected comfort with how it approaches friendship as something that can transcend all else, and not need any complex reason to exist. It centers around a friendship between a wolf and goat, from how they first become friends and into how they have to fight to keep their friendship. The art style and protagonists are adorable and goofy, maintaining a delightful levity and earnestness throughout the whole movie. There is still plenty of drama surrounding their romeo-and-juliet-type relationship, and the lengths these characters go to to be friends is captivating. I rewatch this movie every now and then and it still manages to make me cry through it's earnestness and the truths it speaks to.

You are Umasou

The art style for this is extremely bright, unrealistic, cartoony, and adorable. The story is similarly cartoony, and yet it hits on some very grounded topics about family, facing difficult truths, and finding your own path in life even if it doesnt fit what's conventional. This movie gets bonus points from me for having two main predator+prey relationships that mirror each other. It's heartwarming and silly and has plenty of entertaining action moments with a good dose of drama. It's really charming and sticks with me.

Chirin's Bell

Heads up, this one is bleaker than the rest, and I love it for it's tragedy(behind the very cute artstyle for the sheep, no less). The protaganist sheep starts from an understandable position where he is tired of being the prey, the victim. His journey to do something about it pushes him to see and do things he never would have done otherwise. And it's this path he takes that has both impressive and unintended consequences. The film seems to pose questions like "is it better to live in ignorance if you can?", "how far will you go to ensure you can't be hurt again?", and "how do you reconcile with abandoning your origins?". The ending feels inevitable and yet haunting all the same.

Leafie: A Hen into the Wild

This one has held up for me perhaps the least, due to it's specific brand of cartoony-ness and unexpected gross factor(this ties into the original vs english/censored versions of the movie. arguably it's a personal preference thing in the end, but i'm actually glad i watched the censored version first.) However, it has still hit home for me several times before and deserves it's credit! The movie tackles the idea of remaining locked inside a system vs living free in the wild where there are many more dangers and mistakes to be made. It also focuses heavily on motherhood, where love and selflessness win in a fight against the uncaring and unmoving whims of others and nature itself. The protagonist's determination to be free and live the life she wants despite her ignorance and the pain it causes her is very moving to me. There is tragedy sprinkled thru the movie and yet it's underscored by how the protagonist is resolved see it all as worthwhile. The movie is often goofy, often dramatic, and overall bittersweet.

Jack and the Cuckoo-clock heart: Let's talk about it, one last time.

This is my last installment of Malzieu's bizarre creation, following the two previous ones.

PART 3: THINGS THAT ARENT TALKED ABOUT ENOUGH

The ambiguous description and depiction of Acacia’s complexion

I read on an random article of the movie that Mathias Malzieu, the author of the book and the vocalist of Dionysus ( a French rock band that contributed heavily on the films soundtrack), who also voices Jack in the French Version of the film, based his character Jack of himself and Acacia as Olivia Ruiz (who.also voices the character) , his ex-partner of 7 years.

I do not remember ever encountering the exact skin tone of Acacia in the book but I felt like she was white washed in the movie. In the music video,Tais-toi mon Coeur (performed by Mathias Malzieu and Olivia Ruiz), she was depicted similar to Olivia herself: a little more tan. However, in the cover art of the book, Acacia would be light skinned.

Only her dark brown eyes, hair, red dress, small nose and small stature was descriptive of her appearance. All of Acacia’s features, apart from the comically tiny nose (I think Mathias wanted to create a pixie character therefore that feature) including being myopic, are literally OLIVIA. I have no idea why exactly but I found it odd that she wasn't..tan in depiction all throughout , especially when the muse was literally…the voice actress. So why not make her tan? I dunno, HAHA.

EDIT: So I did look up pictures of Olivia, I don't know if it's tge lighting but I think her skintone would be either lightly tanned or warmly fair. I guess her character's skin being ambiguous just might be understandable just for that. Maybe I was just noticing the undertone of Acacia’s skin in the movie and book cover: cool fair. I wished it was warmer.

The resemblance of the 2 of main women of Jack's life

Mathias recalled that Olivia had a disturbing resemblance to his late mother, which shocked his family. I noticed that in the movie, his biological mother and Acacia had similar features.

I wanted to say as well that it was just the same face syndrome that happens in stylistic animations however I observed other characters and they were all unique. Different noses, lips, expressions, height, body.

But these two women were oddly similar.

Probably their most similar features were youthful features (petite stature, small noses, wide spaced doll eyes), their hair, and this is rather by association, but the color red.

In a way, I think Jack had some Freudian thing. He was attracted to someone who eerily resembles his mother, and in the book, he describes her perfectly by detail. Just from the first chapter, his mother seemed to be a very young mother, at best , a teen.

The Snow and the Red Coats

Speaking of his mom and Acacia, notice how the scenes of his biological mother climbing up the hill in a red coat Mirrored Acacia also in a red coat,climbing up to save Jack.

His mother’s warmth, probably visually symbolized by her red coat and warm tones, tried to keep him in her womb just in time to be delivered. Madeleine ultimately saved him, and his mother (movie), with a heavy heart but a made up mind, left her in the care of Madeleine.

In my opinion, it mirrors heavily with Jack's death too. Acacia coming to save him, though Jack already made up his mind, gave him enough warmth to keep him alive. Here, he takes the opportunity to succeed in his dream to be with her and share their first and last kiss. Jack dies, and in my mind, reunited with Madeleine again up in heaven.

There are more mirroring here beside those, such as both of the women cried frozen droplets of tears, pain and anguish (Jack's mother in labor and Acacia losing Jack), I discussed this above but both of them are almost uncanny (the bun, the hair, the lips, the face too), and running out of time.

Madeleine and Jack were tethered.

Madeleine's influence was heavy in both adaptations, especially in the book. He would think about her a lot, imagine that her and Acacia would get along, and …even when he was with Acacia, he would think of her (the book had a scene that probably inspired that weird flashes of Madeleine when he tried to kiss Acacia). The book’s plot showed this relationship to be a classic relationship of parental attachment, where Jack would find it hard to make choices on his own, even forming a substantially fulfilling romantic relationship. I am glad that the book ended with him (though ambiguous) having a chance to grow up without her. But, I still prefer the movie.

In the movie, his heart was really taken very seriously because it WAS serious (I still have a grudge against the book about it being a placebo attachment) and while Jack already did whatever he wanted, her influence does affect a lot of his choices. Still, he was able to form new bonds and even his relationship with Acacia was okay (significantly in the movie). Breaking the three rules gave him the freedom to choose but he wasn't exactly equipped to deal with his emotions. Yes, he was well off on his own, but didn't have much guidance as his handicap was unique.

The gut punch of Madeleine dying was more than just a loved one or a savior dying, it was the ultimate death to what she left behind to keep him alive, his mechanical heart. I like that the film portrayed it like that. Acacia may have been his north star, but Madeleine was his home, now she was gone.

On Madeleine's part, a lot of her love as mother came from broken dreams and genuine love altogether. As a mother who suffered miscarriage and was told that she can never bear any children again, Jack was God's gift to her and of course, she would want him protected at all costs. She already lost her first and second chance of motherhood. Jack was everything to her and her death in prison may have been devastating to her own self too. Maybe it was true what Joe said in the film, she really might have died from a broken heart. Madeleine was said to be arrested before and for sure, she could've survived but I think her fear got the absolute best of her. I have been told before that any mother who loves her child would go crazy wondering if they're alright, even if they stepped out the door to go to school. Jack was Madeleine's greatest dream come true.

It's very sad but poetically beautiful. I like to think that Madeleine was Jack's heart all along and Jack was hers. Yeah. Cry about it.

The Warm and The Cold

Jack was born on the coldest day on Earth, raised in Edinburgh, a cold town, and most of his childhood on screen had a colder and even harsher contrast atmosphere. In Granada, Spain, it was warm and maybe for more contrast, The Extraordinarium was set as a circus by the desert, and Acacia's colors were stark red, contrasting Edinburgh’s bluish tones and blending well with the warm tinted atmosphere in Spain.

In hindsight, the symbolism of contrasting elements could suggest Jack's circumstances, Edinburgh kept him locked up in the dark and Granada set him free into the light.

But there is also one more contrast. In Jack's eyes, the people in his life, especially Madeleine and Acacia, are also seen in different lighting. I noticed that even when Madeleine has gray muted tones, her scenes would show her in warmer light, signifying her comforting nurturing aura as Jack's mother (albeit adoptive). Joe would be shown as dark and blue, even with warm light. Acacia is shown in warm lighting in his imagination, or whenever they are getting close but interestingly, she has scenes where she would blend well in cold blue tones, like when she was floating thinking about her first love. It might be because Jack sees her like a shooting star or a spark, who belongs in the dark blue sky to shine, far away from his grasp. Even by the end, her red coat, though it stood out, felt cold. Speaking of the ending, the transition from the bright cold snow that suddenly invited warm, almost twinkling, rays of sun as he died was beautiful. In a way, it goes to show that his freedom from life was way warmer than his only pursuit of finding Acacia.

The use of bizarre animation for metaphorical senses

The book is a figure of speech vomit, everything is fantastically and overtly expressed with metaphors, imaginative similes and personifications and a whole lot more literary devices I could not list down here. It would make sense that it should be adapted in animated form. Out of all the visual metaphors, I loved the floating to indicate the feeling of being in love and the use of thorns for Acacia's defensive nature. The most iconic use is the paper cut out scenes, describing the excitement of adventure, Acacia’s pixie depictions and her infamous Malaguena performance, and the use of the harmonica train

The use of birds

If Coraline used bugs, Jack and the Cuckoo-clock heart used birds, this is much more apparent in the book and dialogues instead of the visual.

Such as:

●Jack was described as a little white bird by Madeleine on the day he was born.

● Acacia was associated with a sprite. Joe was compared to a raven.

●Brigitte Heim is apparently an evil ostrich, according to Jack.

●His heart is specifically a cuckoo clock heart

●In the book, a carrier pigeon was given to Jack before he escaped the police, of which he used to write letters to his family in Edinburgh.

●Arthur's gift to Jack, which are eggs that remind him of his ex wife.

There are a lot of bird elements, literally the intro of the movie is a red bird that froze and landed on the bun of Jack's mother while she was climbing up the hill.

In some way, I think birds are a way to symbolize Jack's yearning for freedom, to be able to choose according to his wants. Book Jack was basically handicapped and babied by his adoptive mother, suffered bullying and torment by Joe and even his relationship with Acacia, he was trapped and complied to her wishes and neglecting his own wants. It wasn't until the end where he was able to break free from these chains, his heart was replaced and his mother’s death set him free to make his own choices without fear, his love for Acacia gave him the motivation however their relationship was not meant to be, but that gave him a chance to live authentically.

In the movie, his actions did set him free and was able to truly live authentically with his own choices, even with such harsh hindrances and fears. I really think the movie did him a lot more justice when it came to his freedom of will, he faced life head on with fears that didn't hold him back. He was much more sympathetic in the film, making me cheer him on despite the sad ending I knew he’ll get. The book made me want him to leave Acacia, and live for himself, he was really in a toxic relationship, like a bird who was set free from a cage then caged again the minute it found a new owner.

ok so new au post bc it went haywire after the horses

so, all might has to be in a hospital for a while after the fight with all for one. this is a v secretive hospital where u basically have to be a hero, a politician, or heinously rich to get into. coincidentally, there is also a person who is both heinous and heinously rich who decided to send his son there.

ironically, doing the exact same thing that nana shimura did w her own children for exactly the same reason (otherwise what? trust trubasa with his kid?). izuku is kind of sickly, which is hereditary, and quirkless, which is also hereditary. all for one, father of the year, has a dragons hoard of quirks, including passive ones which just increase health. he weighs his options and without asking izuku (of course), figures hed be better off suffering the short lived pain of quirk transmission than suffering the long term pain of a crazy weak immune system.

after doing this, he sends izuku to the best hospital in the country to recover so, in the timespan where hes fucking up all might, in case anything goes awry (which it does). he also uses a quirk to change his eye and hair color, and remove the freckles.

so izuku has an illness nobody really understands (bc its a symptom of forced quirk transmission), but hes a tiny fucking trooper and the whole hospital loves him. hes a tiny ball of sunshine who talks like a little adult but stumbles on the adult words and gives nonsensical advice like kids do, but a little scarier

All might is in a kind of tucked away corner of the hospital that people arent supposed to go into, but izuku gets away with everything (historically) and loves to explore, so inevitably izuku ends up in toshinori's ward. maybe the door's open bc hes recently woken up or smth and the nurse is in there and this man sees a fluffy little dude w them Big Ole Eyes peeking in from the hallway. izuku skitters away after a short scolding from the nurse but ofc he returns later to talk to the thin man w the intense blue eyes whe looks haunted

at this point in life, izuku has encountered a lot of people who look haunted and hopeless, whether while around his father or at the hospital. he likes cheering them up. in a way, its selfless, bc he doesnt expect anything for it. but its also selfish in the way a child is; he wants them to smile for his own self satisfaction rather than bc its actually helping them. hes a bit emotionally stunted empathetically for obvious reasons

all might feels like hes lost all hope and thinks he could probably never use one for all every again. izuku thinks calling something impossible is just giving up on it. theyre both wrong but they help each other and grow together and become very close.

(unrelated but all might does not give izuku his real name. izuku asks and the first thing that pop into his head is captain america, the movie he watched before his shit got rocked, and steve was added into his glorious hall of monikers)

its also assisted by the fact that since izuku has come to the hospital, his father has not visited him even once, despite promising to. all might has never met izukus father *cough cough* but his impression of him already isnt very good. he gets so attached, despite telling himself thay he cant get attached bc look what happened to nana, right?

all for one gets his kid back many months later, when his brain damage is repaired enough for him to be awake a few hours a day, and his adorable mischievous child is going on and ON about becoming a hero. whoever 'steve' was, all for one was gonna beat their ass.

ok these arent all silly but. perhaps a bit billy.

Random Logan Headcanons;

i think logans got a real sweet tooth. but also just poor eating habits in general. like he’ll just eat tubs of icecream and call it dinner. its not really much of a headcanon ig, since its shown a couple times in canon….

ig a headcanon related to that would be that he has no fucking clue how to shop for groceries, mainly just eating whatevers around the xmansion or going to the gas station/corner store for snacks. if he went to an actual grocery store i feel like he’d get easily overwhelmed, overthink it, and get paranoid about people judging him(grocery shopping is peak Normal human behaviour and the standards are EXTREMELY HIGH). he also just hates shopping in general.

for a lot of things in his life he tends to settle for just surviving, not really having much care for the quality of his living conditions, just as long as theres somewhere to sleep n things to eat n alcohol to drink.

logan makes more animal noises when hes around his friends, and even more when hes alone. theyre basically vocal stims.

he talks/monologues to himself a lot. used to a lot more, but now its mostly when hes alone.

despite all the talk of needing to be more Man than Animal, he actually likes showing of his mutant abilities. like hes always up to arm wrestle, race someone, or do a cool trick with his claws. he’ll show off his healing factor too, ignoring the pain for pleasure of just getting a reaction out of someone, especially if hes doing a bit.

watches sports just to have some stimulation for his brain. he doesnt really have an interest in sports, but has picked up some context over just from watching it for so long that he knows the basics of whats going on. mostly comes in handy so he can have an excuse to yell at something. but honestly he’d probably even yell at a cooking show.

sleeps nude, mainly just a texture problem. he can sleep in terrible conditions when out on missions and stuff, but when at home he tries to have it as comfortable as possible.

reads a lot of books(again, as a way of keeping his brain stimulated) and leans towards more slice of life ones, as well as romance.

chews on his dogtags.

Random Victor Headcanons;

also makes animal noises as a vocal stim, but a lot of them are more involuntary. his meowing is also really high pitch compared to his regular speaking voice.

listens to music to keep his brain stimulated. loud stuff. he also gets some noise cancelling headphones at somepoint, and likes that they just look like regular headphones.

flicks his nails together as a stim.

a harmful stim he has is scratching himself, like long lines across anywhere on his skin.

he kept one of logans button up shirts after a fight one time, a super long time ago, and uses it as something to snuggle for comfort when he sleeps. side effect from this is that sometimes when fighting, logans scent will make him sleepy….

likes trench coats that have a fuck ton of pockets. he likes to be prepared, but also refuses to buy a handbag, so hes got all kinds of weird stuff in his pockets.

watches a lotttttt of tv. and movies. hes kind of a cinephile.

the reason his hair is so perfect all the time is that the healing factor applies to stuff like hair and nails as well. unlike logan(who uses a bunch of hair product daily) victor keeps his natural. he rarely even needs to brush it. he took to putting it up in a ponytail for when he needs to look more professional, since normally its fairly big and fluffy. he’ll sometimes put it up in a high ponytail or bun too, and occasionally add accessories n braids to it.

prefers hot showers/baths. also hangs out in his hot tub a lot. makes him feel clean.

huge wardrobe, all kinds of outfits. he tends to keep a lot of his clothes from over the decades, even if he doesnt wear them anymore.

Not that anon that asked you about A Real Pain but I went to watch A Real Pain and I really liked it. Both cousins (felt very real to me) and very honest depictions of what seems to be the case for a lot of people nowadays; being disconnected from life and sincerity and kinda getting by day by day on the hopes that you are a better person than the person you are judging.

Like Jesse's character David is a complete asshole and very jealous and seeing the way he was conflicted about how much comfort he got from the fact Benji was kinda a dead-end loser despite the fact people liked him more.

And then Benji who cant get it together long enough to succeed because of a lot of things including his depression.

Yeah I liked it and I liked that it was set to the backdrop of touring Poland on a heritage trip because they were meant to like find themselves somehow or learn something but in the end that made no difference whatsoever, that horrific past had no real impact, it was just a convinent detour in their lives to pretend that they are engaged with the world outside of themselves but they really arent.

But more than anything I was really impressed by David's character and his casual self-centered, self-pitying cruelty.

Interesting, anon! I do agree that the trip not having any real or lasting impact on either of them was effectively done, but I don't know if I think David was a complete asshole and I didn't see him as a cruel person at all really? I think he was certainly selfish, but I saw his inability to connect with others as being fundamentally about his inability to allow himself his own feelings, something that he'd clearly learned given how much Benji tells us explicitly that David used to be an extremely emotional child.

I thought the movie did a pretty good job of telling us that David was also used to cleaning up after Benji - the little beat with the tour guide after Benji dressed him down I felt was one of the more effective moments in the film - and his emotional eruption at the group dinner which revealed Benji's suicide attempt I think was very much about showing us that David hadn't dealt with his own feelings about that, and how much pain he himself was trying to distance himself from.

I didn't hate the film by any stretch of the imagination, I even did like quite a few things about it, but - - mm. I guess one of my issues was that I don't think the movie could decide how the rest of the tour group felt about Benji and David, together or apart, and would have their feelings change purely for the sake of the plot, which ultimately made Benji's supposed effortless charisma and impact on people feel inauthentic to me. I understand the creative decision to keep us out of Benji's conversations with others, but I actually don't think I agree with it. I think we needed at least one scene where we actually really saw him work his magic on someone to balance the times we saw him go after people, and the fact that all of those scenes were out of earshot I think weakened the movie overall.

I did think the cinematography was beautiful though, and I actually loved all the shots of walls. It felt really poignant and thematically on point to me, but I loathed the score. I felt it often didn't match up to the emotion of the scene at all, which makes sense when you consider it's predominantly Chopin, and not music actually written for the film. I honestly think a more fitting score probably would've made me like it more.
