#TF feels XL-like

blf: la historia continua

having been one of the fans that was counting down the seconds until the new series started, i have a lot of thoughts on the show now that 4 episodes have aired. i've seen each one a few times now but my thoughts will still be a little scattered!

first of all, i LOVE the production quality, and the stylistic choice they took with the aesthetics of this series. it's sharp, artsy, quick, colorful, and very much giving Mode magazine vibes from Ugly Betty! the on screen graphics are a cute touch, Mila's are a little bit extra, but so is she so it's okay. i especially loved the comedic timing of the graphic from the bathroom scene (XL 😆).

for being 20 years later, everyone is FANTASTIC at getting right back into character. having witnessed other shows that were rebooted years and years later and seeing some people not being able to get back into the swing of things, the ability of this cast just really goes to show the caliber of actors they cast in the original. everyone effortlessly slid back into character, mannerisms, voice inflection, chemistry between characters, honestly i have no complaints. i know some people think don hermes wasn't tough enough on mila in his scenes with her, but do yall have grandparents that love to spoil you and let you get away with things they wouldnt let their kids get away with? i'm not surprised at all he's softer with her than he would have been with betty.

so after all that, my problems with the reboot...

episodes 1&2 are bad. just straight up bad, and it's unfortunate that it took 2 out of the precious little 10 we have to find their footing. episode 1 is filled with "dramatic pauses" which honestly just feel awkward, and having come from Gaitan's never ending monologues, it felt like empty air that should have been filled. Gaitan's silences were strategic and emphasized the emotions of the scenes, and actually set up to be pregnant pauses, where this series feels like they just dont know what the character would say, and not heavy with drama like they think it comes across as.

the writing, ohh the writing...

betty's diary was always used as a tool to give us background, give us insight into what betty was feeling/thinking, and give us context or extra info we didnt see on screen. with so little episodes and so little time to explain things, HUH.....WOULDA BEEN HANDY.....

good writing shows and doesn't tell, and what these early episodes do are NEITHER. something mysterious and bad is happening at ecomoda....too bad you dont get to know! camila and betty's relationship is in tatters, betty abandoned them, camily went to ???? for five??? years!! nahhhh, dont tell us anything about it, just jump right to the resentment!??

the writers made many VERY strange choices in not telling us more about:

what armando and mario did

who exactly is marcela's dude and what he gets out of helping marcela (idfk his name)

giving us background on armando and that lawyer

giving us more background on betty and mila other than just "you abandoned us!" "she's so distant now" where tf was mila and why was she out of the country for 5 years???

why are mila and marce so close??

think back to OG blf...when things were mentioned in passing like the "horrible thing that happened to betty", those werent things that were of importance for that scene/storyline/moment, thats why they were in passing, they just added to the layers of complexity of betty, but it was gratifying when we later found out what it actually was. or think about all the important events that happened because we knew what was going on! imagine if we didnt know what armando's evil plan was, and we saw betty read The Letter and we're not told what it says, and we see betty go through all her trauma and emotions and never finding anything out until she tells armando she knows. there would be no pay off because we didnt know what was happening in the first place so we're not invested! whereas in this series they are just leaving out huge gaps of information needed to feel the anxieties the people we're watching are feeling. we finally find out what armando did during his second time as president at ecomoda in episode 4, and knowing that information from the beginning would have been so much more impactful! we'd be stressed knowing armando fucked up AGAIN, is lying to betty AGAIN, put the company in financial ruin AGAIN, then we would feel the emotion of him finally coming clean to her and telling her he's planning to take full responsibility! there's not as much pay off when learning at the exact same time as betty.

with mila and betty, yeah we can fill in the blanks with what happened to them, but without hearing betty's thoughts or seeing through her eyes how their relationship fell apart, the (majority) of the audience went straight to hating mila and resenting her for their shitty relationship. if we had context around it, the audience would understand her and how everything turned out that way.

episodes 3&4 really found their footing, the humor was back, armando's characterization and development was so nice to see! callbacks to the OG show were awesome, i DIED at sandra yelling at freddy "you're disrespecting the community!!!". i'm worried that mila is manipulating betty with their happy reunion but idk! there's not enough context/foreshadowing/knowledge of mila's character so idk that one's a wild card. but if the rest of the show continues like episode 3&4 i'll be a happy camper, because 1&2 honestly had me really worried.

i wanna know what everyone else thinks! i have tons of thoughts that i already forgot because i dont write things down in the moment lol so i'm sure i'll be back to write some more down the line maybe after a couple more episodes! (new thought i just remembered–why tf is patricia in HR, let alone working? is her old man not rich enough to support her lifestyle? if that's the case, why aren't we told this to have more background on why she's back at a place she very dramatically quit from so we can invest more feelings when she's being "bullied" for having an old husband etc? it's the little things...i dont think i'm asking too much of the writers because other shows do more and more effectively with the same exact run time as this show)

Thought that might be cute:

XL gets immaculately pregnant by HC without either knowing.

My idea is that HC somehow (I personally assumed it would have to be very early on in him being a Supreme or maybe it happened when HX was becoming one and HC was a bit feral due to Mount Tonglu being open) was so consumed by thoughts of his God being alone and wanting to be with him, that he somehow was able to send a special butterfly (he can't see through it or sense it) that, when it finds XL (meditating or maybe sleeping?) it is absorbed into his body. He gets to see the butterfly in his mind's eye, but, being XL he's kinda "huh that was weird, pretty, but weird" and when he gets sick he assumes it's his bad luck.

XL would be extremely confused when he discovers he's pregnant because: 1, that shouldn't be possible and 2, he's still 100% on his cultivation path???

He kinda figures out it has something to do with the butterfly and names his child "Yindie" (silver butterfly. Which sounds feminine to me? Maybe a daughter?) her surname is whatever tf XL is choosing to go by at the time. (so possibly Hua lol)

(I'll be nice to XL and HC and make her immortal too. Why? Uhhh...*handwavey gestures*)

Whenever HC finds XL (preferably way earlier so Yindie can still be a child, but the idea of HC discovering XL and his ADULT daughter has it's charm too) he is shocked by her resemblance to HC's true form. Especially since...he hasn't seen XL in so long, and XL is still pure!

I feel like Yindie would be wary of HC, if not afraid of him, but whenever XL tells HC the story of her birth HC is like: 🥺 "I'm a father?? Dianxia has a child??" and he tries to win his daughter over. (alternative: she figures out HC is her father and plays parent trap, trying to get them together)

(he is weirded out by the whole thing since in my head he doesn't personally want children, but would have them if XL wanted them. Obviously he's not going to harm a part of Dianxia, especially one he clearly loves dearly, and would never ask him to cast her aside, but she's an accident, not unwanted)

Bonding Trip

Post-canon Xianle trio take on kayaking: MQ in the front, XL in the middle (not paddling), and FX in the back. 

Except they keep going in circles. 

XL is supposed to be giving orders but fengqing keep clashing 😭

MQ: “Fengxin, I swear to god you better stop telling me what to do - I’m literally in the front and have the best view of where we’re going”

FX: “ok but just because you’re in the front doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t see, idiot. I’m doing my part so I don’t know why the fucking kayak isn’t turning LEFT for some goddamn reason-“

MQ: “oh, so we’re doing the blame game now?”

Meanwhile, XL is staring down the stream and thinking to himself:  “hmm, the water is moving faster that way hmm”

It’s a waterfall.

Fengqing: [still arguing]

XL: “waiT gUYS”

Fengqing: [not even listening, not even rowing at this point]

XL whips out the backup paddle and accidentally thwacks both MQ and FX on the head.

XL: “GUYS WE HAVE TO TURN AROUND NOW”

MQ and FX finally seeing their impending doom: “…shit”

Fortunately, all three martial gods manage to row against the current and end back up on calm waters. That is when they finally capsize the kayak because MQ and FX try to take a swing at each other and XL ducks right in time to dodge-

SPLASH! They tip over in a fit of shouts, the last thing heard being: “I hate you SO MUCH!”

It was MQ.

MQ who pops up from the water like a wet cat - NOT a happy camper at all - glaring daggers at FX who bobs up and down a few feet away. 

XL is just chilling. At first, he made sure he still had on the necklace with HC’s ashes, but other than that, he didn’t particularly care about what state his clothes or appearance was in.  

In fact, as XL is treading the river, he thinks the water is actually kind of refreshing. 

MQ: *COMPLAINING AND SCREAMING IN THE BACKGROUND*

FX: *occasionally screaming something back when he’s mentioned*

XL, absentmindedly: “Honestly, the river is kinda refreshing.” 😇

Suddenly, the silence is deafening. 

MQ: “the fuck did you just say?”

XL: “I-i just said that it’s not so bad, isn’t it? It was too hot today-”

MQ, popping a vein: “YOU- YOU- Y-“ 

MQ can’t even collect himself enough to speak. He’s visibly trying not to choke on angry tears, just seriously regretting even agreeing to this so-called bonding activity. (Not really though.)

Minutes later, FX and MQ are still arguing - trying to strangle each other at this point - while XL is floating on his back behind them. 

None of them notice how far away their kayak is drifting.

Also, where did their paddles go?

When they finally agree to swim to the shore, MQ is left behind as he isn’t the best swimmer compared to FX and XL. 

It’s only after telling FX, “At least we’re still together, which equals good memories,” that XL looks back-

Right as MQ’s head goes underwater.

“Motherfuc-“

XL gasps in shock. 

“GAHH MU QING JUST DISAPPEARED-“ XL exclaims, doggy-paddling in place as he points to where MQ was just seconds ago.

FX also turns around.

“Let’s leave him.”

XL: 😠

FX: “oKAY oKAY LETS GET HIM”

So something dragged MQ under.

Merpeople? Water dragons ? Human-like sea creatures? Who knows. But there’s a whole underwater civilization that Xianle trio find themselves in. 

The creatures that pulled MQ under were just babies and thought he was pretty, so they kidnapped him. XL manages to communicate through body language and is welcomed enthusiastically - somehow he makes friends everywhere he goes!

And then one of the sea creatures tries to wife FX up. FX is hell-bent on swimming tf out of there, has wanted to leave the moment he was approached. 

World’s away, HX feels it in his bones that XL is getting into some shit: “Someone go collect this man.”

It’s him. HX is the one who ends up finding Xianle trio, tracking XL down to say, ��Xie Lian, get your ass back to Hua Cheng, he’s worried about you.”

Because the spiritual energy doesn’t work in the underwater kingdom, XL couldn’t inform his husband of his whereabouts. The Xianle tiro + HX begin to leave, but the creatures apparently want them to stay and try trapping them.

HX is not having it.

HX: “not on my watch- or else that one-eyed freak will have my head”

HX effortlessly helps the Xianle trio escape. As they break the surface of the unsuspecting lake, HC is already waiting above shore as he had received a signal from HX hours earlier.

HC sweeps XL up from the water and immediately dries XL’s clothes and body. 

“Gege seems to have had quite the adventure today.”

XL smiles up at his husband, leaning in for a warm hug.

“A true bonding experience, haha.”

FX, MQ, and HX: 💀💀💀

HC pulls seaweed from XL’s hair: “I’m glad Gege had fun then.”

MQ pointing at XL: “I’m never letting you plan a trip again”

(I feel like the drama woobified Tang Fan a lot more than the novel.) Yeah, I had the same thought re 诗一行, though it may just be a common type of novel structure building from stories like 包公案 with its episodic but interrelated mysteries. How do you like it so far?

yes!!! i watched maybe 10 minutes of the first ep, went and read the first two chapters of the novel, went back to finish watching the first ep with my buddy, then am now on uhhh chapter 54 of the novel, post-kidnapping arc.

that character intro really does matter, huh? The drama opens on Tang Fan eating and the novel opens on Tang Fan dealing with sexual harassment, the difference is STARK haha. I haven't seen enough of the drama to make up my mind on this yet but I will say I spent the entire first ep asking my friend (who’s seen a handful of eps) "is he really just?? a pouty baby boy????" Not necessarily in a bad way but it'll depend a lot on how the show pans out lmfaooooo. Sui Zhou’s hot tho!! Very much my type, but am i tripping balls or does his VA have a non-Beijing accent??? He’s also not the peak icy steel of the SZ I picture from the books but I’m a fan of his aura and am excited to see how far he takes this service top malewife energy.

novel-wise, i fucking love it dude. I too am a Holmes fan so the cases are very cool, especially how MXS paces her set-ups. It feels like she really gives you a big handful of clues to figure things out yourself as a reader, and it's not super centered around TF's thought process. Also her writing style makes me chuckle ‘cause it’s soooo exposition-heavy. As a writer, I lurch heavily toward the screenplay/stageplay adage of “advance the plot through dialogue,” so it’s very refreshing to read her dense histories and interpersonal connections so confidently interspersed through the action/dialogue scenes. I feel like I’m learning a lot about novel pacing.

(Also another reason I’m excited to watch the drama and see how it adapts such a novel. Already we have the first two mysteries collapsed into one, and the implied efficiency in that move has made me perk up hahaha.)

My mom’s mad because I went to church in a knee length dress, Dr Martens, and a flannel shirt. (To be clear, her normal stipulation is I have to wear a dress, which I more than oblige with)

She says I dress like more of a teenage rebel than I used to.

Maybe it’s because I’m losing weight and like to wear nice things now. I’m losing weight and less afraid to buy something nice that’s in my size because I’m not going to be massively too small for it when all’s said and done.

When all’s said and done I’ll be able to comfortably wear a size medium or large shirt and my XLs that I like now will fit loosely and that’s okay. I won’t be swimming in them.

I have a job and sometimes I get a new flannel or pair of jeans or teeshirt bc I keep finding that my old clothes don’t fit and I need something that does. So what if I wear band shirts and skinny jeans? I’m buying my own clothes now. I’m comfortable in my own skin most days and does it really matter that the knees are ripped out of my pants? That I bought?

Who cares what you wear. Do you like it? How it looks on you? How it makes you feel? That’s what matters, not what other people say.

I’m buying my own clothes, and who cares if I like to dress grunge or punk rock, when there are so many worse things I could be doing with my life.

At least dressing punk rock gives me a false sense of confidence, unlike the chagrined look on my mom’s face.
