As of precisely 5 seconds ago, I’ve officially finished listening to Epic the Musical, and I wanted to talk about that for a second. For months I’ve refused to shut up about being an ‘OG fan’, because I found Jay Herran’s account before he even released the first saga, but none of that matters now, because the journey that this fandom has been on has been beautiful. Coincidentally, I began studying the Odyssey in my Classics lessons around the time I discovered Epic, so in addition to being an incredible musical, this show has been a comfort and companion throughout my revision, reminding me of key plot points and encouraging me to take a further interest in mythology. I listen to at least one Epic song a day, I truly think that it’s the best musical to ever exist. I was too young to fully appreciate Hamilton when it was released, but Epic is the Hamilton of the 2020s - Jay Herrans is a phenomenal composer and a genuinely wonderful man from what I’ve seen of him on social media. He and the Epic team have achieved ever so much in such a short amount of time - they have a production company, they’ve achieved Billboard success with several chart-topping sagas, Jay and Talya have found love together, and as I type this, they are all in Ithaca together celebrating the release of the final saga of their acclaimed musical. I listened to the final song of the Ithaca saga with tears in my eyes, because the Epic team’s own Odyssey has been awe-inspiring, I’m so proud and amazed of everything that they’ve achieved, and I sincerely hope that Epic is adapted, either to the stage, as a video game, or as an animated film. Epic is too important, too special and sacred, to be forgotten by the world.

To the anon who says they don't understand why people are upset regarding race: I can assure you that if anyone in this musical was recast, it would be a completely different situation.

Just look at Odysseus vs Eurylochus. Odysseus does a lot of horrible things in this musical. He's still the fandom's darling. But ever since Thunder Bringer, the fandom has been vitriolically violent in regards to Eurylochus, whose own actions in what we have Epic's canon are nowhere nearly as severe. Odysseus gets praised for what he does, where as Eurylochus was constantly called horrible things, people saying "If I ever met Eurylochus I'd have [insert graphic act of violence here]",. saying things like fans of Eurylochus have mental problems (and that being the lightest thing people have said).

And most of the fandom refused to call out on that behavior.

If Eurylochus was pale skinned, or at least paler, people would be fighting over who was right or wrong. He'd be seen as "uwu he did nothing wrong, you're all just meeeeaaaaan" like Polities. And more.

And then let's look at Zeus and Poseidon vs Antinous. The fandom's reaction to Zeus, a known rapist, and Poseidon, who did[gestures at the musical] ALL of that, are given an entire AU where they have sex with Odysseus, and any references to assault are either brushed off or a joke. Meanwhile Antinous, attempted rapist, isn't given the same treatment as the other two. Despite people claiming his voice is amazing and that they love his actor, he's not shown nearly the same reverence as the singers for Zeus and Poseidon.

Then look at Calypso vs Circe. How many times have you seen "Talya Sindel's voice is great she's amazing no hate to her BUT CIRCE IS THE WORST" type of reactions vs "No hate to Barbara Wangui she's fantastic BUT CALYPSO IS THE WORST" type reactions? If you can point out more than 20 of the Circe ones, then I'll concede on this point, but I've yet to see even 1 single instance of this happening, where as this is just the norm for anyone talking about Calypso and Barbara.

This isn't just unique to the Epic fandom. This is a pattern of behaviors in most fandoms where any Black characters exist. A pattern the Epic fandom (and to some extent, Jay himself, though probably unintentionally) is continuing to perpetuate.

Black people, particularly DARK Black people, always seem to be treated as pariahs in fandom spaces, and have a habit of being cast in more antagonistic roles. (Did y'all forget Ayron wanted to be Tiresias first? That was the original role he wanted. Jay had him audition for Antinous during his callback for Tiresias.)

And you know what happens to the light skinned Black people?

Unless they're made the leading role, they get made into "uwu so soft" types, like Polities currently is. The fandom seems to forget that he took part in the Trojan War too. Polites is a soldier too. Yet the fandom acts as if he never picked up a sword in his life. Your "Greet the World With Open Arms" fave has also killed people. Yet they act as if he stayed on the boat the entire war.

People are upset because there's racist patterns presenting yet again in fandom spaces and in text and they want people to at least acknowledge that they're there.

And trying to brush it off with "well the actors were okay with their casting so it's fine" is belittling and being willingly ignorant to what fans (particularly BLACK fans) are trying to get across.

(And yes, how a creator views certain characters or portrays certain scenes and themes is a contributing factor to how people will perceive certain aspects of the work. But that's a rant for another day)

Welcome! Been waiting for your account! Meant to ask, Have you listened to the Ithaca saga yet? If so, are you still alive mentally?

I'm gonna be honest, I've asked if you guys want a Tumblr account from me BECAUSE I wanted to yap about the Ithaca Saga lol

@pomiidorii and I stayed up to watch the live, and it was SO much fun. I laughed so hard at the joystick infant, on Polyphemus with Luke being the Cyclops, Luck runs out with the macarena and the face slap, No longer you when Mason just decided to randomly dance with Jorge, or when Talya and Jay swapped roles during their songs. When they brought the ghost of Polites it was a great idea too, and LOL when Jay pointed at Luke during God Games for Zeus cheating on his wife, and his face completely dropped LMAO

But about the Ithaca Saga, I managed to not cry during it but it was really hard, considering the topics of families reuniting (or positive family dynamics) is one of the very few things that make me emotional. (Don't be fooled, I've cried after the live when I listened to the two last songs again...)

What I didn't expect was the vocals of Ayron in Hold them down, that was AMAZING. I fully thought I'd be skipping that song because I personally cannot handle the topic of SA very well in media, but the song itself was so good that I completely detached the meaning and now cannot stop singing it. During the animatic however, it was really hard to watch the part where Antinous sang about Penelope, it was truly sickening.

Odysseus was SO GOOD my jaw completely DROPPED. I LOVE when characters go completely apeshit after being wronged and (rightfully) take revenge (coming from an Ares devotee, this isn't that surprising). The appearance of Telemachus as the new Warrior of the mind?! And the way Ody just straight up refused to listen to any of the suitors, with his little sassy "No 🫶", I was SOLD.

Do NOT let me start about Anna completely SERVING vocals in The Challenge and Would you fall in love with me again, OH. MY. GOD. Her voice is such a beautiful mix of powerful and delicate, I don't get how she's doing it! And the part when Pen and Ody embrace and Just a man starts playing?? ARGHH!! Such an amazing use of literacy, Jorge has outdone himself.

Another little thing, the switch from Ody growling at the suitors and the second his boy asks for him, his voice softens to answer. STOP THIS MADNESS JORGE!! And when Mico and Jay hugged?? Oh my heart...

The interlude of Steven saying he couldn't come to Ithaca because of the beating he got LMAO and the singing in the shower LOL Neal Illustrator already made a great animatic with that part!

I cannot believe that EPIC is done now, it feels so weird. I remember randomly finding Jorge with the blue eye filter on TikTok and thinking, who is this weirdo? And immediately skipping him LMAO I had no idea that weirdo would come back months later with a full musical that I'd love so much! All in all, it was a great experience, even though I joined only around a month before the Vengeance Saga.

On top of my spacedolls fanfic, i wrote a Mishalia fic! I actually wrote this one first bc i intended for it to be my gift for secret santa, but i decided i wanted it to be a personal project so i wrote the spacedolls instead. Here is some Mishalia fluff for the soul

Finally, after the accident, and the time in purgatory, Misha had saved enough money to get a one way ticket to Ukraine. He now lives in a lovely house with his even lovelier wife, Talya. Oh how he loved to say that. All this time she was a ‘fiancee’ and now he could call her his wife. Talya was just as excited to call him her husband. 

Talya is real after all. He had never doubted that fact for a second. Not even when he died and had lost all hope. Although he never doubted that she was real, his friends did. Even his boyfriend Noel.

Noel and Misha had gotten together after purgatory, and despite Misha asking Noel to move to Ukraine with him, Noel refused, so now they are dating long distance. However Misha visits him with Talya as often as possible. 

“How was the tea my love?” Talya appeared behind Misha, wrapping her arms around his middle. “Amazing as always, dear.” He responds

They stand in their kitchen, Misha holding a pink mug, his free hand on Talya’s arm. 

“Oh!” Talya steps back from Misha and comes in front of him, taking his free hand in hers. “Guess who called me today!” Talya looks very excited. “Who?” Misha asks, smiling playfully.

 “It was Ricky! Well really it was Penny speaking, but it was Ricky’s words.” Talya says.

“What did they say?” Misha is intrigued now. 

“Nothing much, just saying hi and checking up on us really. Asking when we can visit.”

Ricky is by far Misha’s best friend. Before Misha moved, they would work together, Ricky giving feedback on Misha’s music and Misha giving feedback on Ricky’s latest comics. And Penny is Ricky’s girlfriend. Penny was the unfortunate girl who lost her head in the accident, becoming the tragic Jane Doe. She is doing well now, she had recently gained custody of her younger brother Ezra, and now they live with the Potts family. They have so kindly offered to host Misha and Talya the next time that they visit Canada.

Misha laughs. “Did you tell them that we’re planning on it?” 

Talya nods. “They are excited. Penny said that she spoke to Constance, she can’t wait for our next visit either.”

They both smile. They didn’t have too many friends, but they had the choir. Misha and Talya couldn’t ask for anyone else. They were always there for them, despite living on different continents.

“How do you think they’ll react when we tell them?” Misha asks, his eyes flitting to Talya’s stomach. 

“I’m sure they’ll be just as excited as we are. They will be the best team of aunts and uncles imaginable.” Talya says, taking Misha’s mug and placing it on the counter behind her.

Misha raises and eyebrow and smirks a bit.

“Oh yes. And Noel will be an excellent second father,” Talya adds, “Best of all, we will be excellent parents.”

Misha raises Talia’s hand and twirls her around a few times before pulling her into an embrace.

“I love you, Talya.” Misha whispers.

“I love you too, Misha.” Talya responds.

infodump about Epic please- I know nothing about it but it sounds awesome and where do I watch it? :)

Okay okay okay. Let me get my thoughts together.

So let's start from the begging. There's this amazing man called Jorge Rivera-Herrans (Jay), who started making a musical adaptation of the Odyssey by Homer because. He can. He's super enthusiastic about the project, if you look up his videos on yt, his enthusiasm and energy is basically contagious. He's also super funny.

So the tricky things about EPIC is that. It's not done yet. So you can't watch it (well you... Can in some way but not like you can watch Hamilton or any other normal musical). Jay puts puts new "chapters" of the story whenever he has one ready (they're called Sagas. There's 9 sagas in the whole musical, 6 of them are out. These are The Troy Saga, The Cyclops Saga, The Ocean Saga, The Circe Saga, The Underworld Saga and The Thunder Saga). 5 Sagas are in Act 1 and 4 in Act 2. Both acts have 20 songs, so a total of 40 songs.

When a new Saga comes out, there's usually a watch party (it's also streamed on YouTube), where Jay streams the songs with the lyrics, and with some scenes they recorded/animatics.

The Thunder Saga came out today, but this time Jay didn't only stream the current saga, but the whole thing (My friend @randomfangirl32 recorded it, if she'll let me, I can send you the links so you can watch the whole thing we have so far, if you want). It was because they had to re-record the first two sagas due to... Financial stuff, idk how to explain it, Jay has a video about it.

And also. The actors. The actors are SO perfect. My favorite ones are Talya Sindel (as Circe), Teagan Earley (hope I spelled her name right, and she's playing Athena), Steven Rodriguez (as Poseidon), Luke Holt (as Zeus), Anna Lea (as Penelope), but seriously, everyone else is awesome too 🥹
