Syrian rebels begin forming government as Israeli tanks approach Damascus
The armed Syrian opposition will instruct Mohammed al-Bashir to form a new Syrian government for a transitional phase, as the Israeli army continues its massive attack on Syria launched on Monday.
Syria’s rebels begin forming government
The armed Syrian opposition will instruct Mohammed al-Bashir to form a new Syrian government for a transitional phase.
According to the TV station’s correspondent, this was agreed at a meeting between the commander of the opposition’s operations department, Ahmed al-Shara, and al-Bashir and the prime minister of the former regime government, Mohammed al-Jalali.
They met to discuss the order of the transfer of power. According to Al Jazeera, al-Bashir will be appointed as the new prime minister of the Syrian government.
He served as minister of development and humanitarian affairs in the government to save the Idlib revolution in 2022, the TV channel specified.
Meanwhile, the streets of Damascus continue to be chaotic and gunfire can be heard.
Israel destroys military planes, air defence systems, weapons depots in Syria
The Israeli army has launched a massive attack on Syria since Monday. Israeli media reported that “army planes attacked more than 150 military targets in Syria as part of efforts to destroy the Syrian army.”
Among the dozens of Israeli targets in Syria are Syrian army tanks, aircraft and military helicopters.
The Israeli army has carried out the most powerful raids on Syria since the October 1973 war. Israeli jets also attacked the suburbs of Homs city and the southern village of Shinshar.
Israeli troops have now captured the entire former buffer zone of the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel since 1973, and have advanced deep into Syria, reaching settlements on the outskirts of Damascus.
According to local TV channels, Israeli tanks have advanced past the town of al-Quneitra (about 55 kilometres to Damascus) and continue moving towards the Syrian capital.
Local sources specified that the Israeli Armed Forces are now in the area of the town of Qatna, almost 20 kilometres from Damascus. Along the way, they captured several towns and villages, including Aarna, Bakasm, Reemeh, Hina, Qala, Jandal, al-Husseiniya, Jita and al-Hashab.
That Israeli troops occupied several villages and towns in the southern part of Damascus. According to Arab media reports, Israeli drones are continuously attacking the Syrian capital amid the offensive.
Syrian opposition flag raised at embassy in Brussels
The Syrian opposition’s revolutionary flag was raised on Monday at the Syrian embassy building in the Belgian capital Brussels in a historic moment marking the fall of the Assad regime in Syria.
Security around the building was tight, with Belgian police setting up iron barriers to secure the area during the crossing.
On Sunday, Syrians gathered in front of Brussels Central Station and in various neighbourhoods to mark the fall of the regime. The festive gatherings, filled with chanting and waving revolutionary flags, took place under the watchful eye of public security law enforcement.
On November 27, Syrian opposition forces launched a 10-day lightning offensive, capturing key cities and the capital Damascus on December 8. The swift offensive, backed by defecting military units, led to the fall of the Assad regime after 13 years of civil war. Assad and his family fled to Moscow, where Russia has granted them asylum.
Meanwhile, Greece’s former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis wrote on X:
“The duplicity of the Western media is breaking all records. When the jihadists entered Kabul, toppling the American regime, it was the end of the world. Now that jihadists have entered Damascus to topple a secular enemy of the West, it is a triumph of the human spirit.”

Syria's Uncertain Days Ahead
Tumblr media
Photo: A young boy stands outside of a school being used as a shelter for newly arrived families in Northeast Syria.
Over the last few weeks, perhaps the most significant development in the long-lasting Syrian civil war unfolded as Bashar al-Assad and his brutal regime were toppled. Over the following days, stories came out of Syria of families reunited, unjustly imprisoned men and women released, and thousands displaced finally able to return to their homes. These stories are cause for joy. And yet, amidst the joy, there are many more stories these heartbreaking – of renewed violence against minorities, extra-judicial killings, and horrific human rights abuses.
We cannot turn a blind eye to these tragic stories and the individual lives and souls behind each one.
Northeast Syria, where the Kurds have governed themselves for years, has become a haven for minorities persecuted under the new leaders of Syria. Thousands of displaced families have fled to the region to escape the violence – often fleeing with only the clothes on their backs as they witnessed the deaths of those not lucky enough to escape. In the bitter winter temperatures, they have been searching for whatever shelter is available – schools, construction sites, and government offices.

With few humanitarian organizations present and the fragility of the political situation, the relative peace within Northeast Syria is unlikely to last.
Turkish-backed militias are capitalizing on the security vacuum created by the recent conflict and amassing forces near Kobane – a Kurdish town on the border of Syria and Turkey. Many expect an imminent attack that will force more innocent people from their homes in the name of a ‘safety zone’ that Turkey wishes to create along its southern border.
Meanwhile, the new leaders of Syria have stated that no part of Syria will remain independently governed – there will be one united Syria. This directly threatens the Kurdish self-administered region in the northeast and all the minorities that they are protecting. Thousands of families are already in refugee camps in the northeast, having previously fled persecution and still unable to return home.
Amid this insecurity, we are coming alongside Kurdish families facing these attacks.

Emergency food packs have provided nourishment for today, bedding sets have given kids a place to lay their heads, and heaters have been distributed to shelters where the temperature has been frigid.
We pray for a future of peace and stability for Syria, where all people are safe regardless of their differences.
Our calling in the days ahead is clear - to protect the free, full lives of kids until this peace is reached.
This community makes this possible.
You make this possible.
Thank you for having eyes to see and ears to hear and, without fail, responding with love.
Until peace,

Just a genuine reminder, simply liking and reblogging posts or just paying attention to what's happening in places like Palestine, The Congo, Sudan, Yemen, Syria, etc. Does help!
If you can't donate or boycott because you're a minor or in a situation where you can't afford to try signing petitions and spreading awareness so others who can afford to can have information
Edit: there are a lot of good suggestions for what to do in the reblogs that I forgot to mention

British officials meet new Syrian leader al-Sharaa in Damascus
UK officials held a meeting with Ahmed al-Sharaa, the new Syrian leader and former head of the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), according to Arab media.
Al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani, met with delegates from the British Foreign Office. He emphasised the need to rebuild shattered state institutions, which must be based on law and security. The new state leader called for the lifting of international sanctions to allow Syrian refugees around the world to return home.
Earlier, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy confirmed that the UK government had established “diplomatic contact” with the HTS. The militant group has been considered a prohibited terrorist organisation in the UK since 2017.
We will judge them on their actions. We want to see a representative government, an inclusive government in Syria.
The UK also committed £50m (€60.5m) in humanitarian aid to Syria and Syrian refugees. The package included £30 million for food, shelter and emergency medical care. Lebanon and Jordan would receive £10 million each through the World Food Programme and UNHCR.
US President Joe Biden’s administration is also reassessing the status of HTS, with Biden stating that the US would evaluate “not just their words, but their actions.”

On December 30, the interim Syrian government announced a series of military promotions, elevating seven foreign fighters with ties to extremist groups once affiliated with Al-Qaeda to the ranks of lieutenant and colonel.
The promotions were confirmed in a decree signed by Ahmad al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani. Sharaa, a former leader of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front, now serves as the de facto leader of Syria and commander-in-chief of the Syrian armed forces following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government earlier this month.........
