comparing malevolent and venom (or: why private eyes and symbrock are the same ship in different fonts)

spoilers ahead for the venom movies, various venom comics, and s1 of malevolent!!

Arthur is a PI, Eddie is an investigative journalist. Both of them ran into their body mates through their investigations (specifically movies!Eddie, comics!Eddie does not share this origin)

The Entity takes the name John through experiences with Arthur. When Arthur is in a coma for a month, the nurses don’t know his name and refer to him as John Doe. The Entity notices this and finds solace in it. When Arthur wakes, the Entity tells Arthur to refer to him as John. In the Venom comics, their collective name “Venom” came from Eddie being deranged about losing his job as a reporter. He tells Peter to call them Venom, because that’s what he’s paid to write at the shitty tabloids he’s employed at.

Though the Venom Symbiote has a name from its home world, many characters throughout the comics refer to it as Venom, implying they kept the name Eddie gave them.

In episode 9, John and Arthur argue until they give each other the silent treatment, leading to them getting caught by the police because John did not warn him there were officers. After realizing they need to work together, John and Arthur escape from the officers (and the supernatural lake monster). Towards the end of that episode, John tells Arthur that “you and I are one, and I need to begin to see us as one.” In Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Venom and Eddie have a rather dramatic break up that ends with them separating from each other. Eddie then gets arrested and brought in as a suspect in Cletus Kassidy’s escape. Venom, in Anne’s body, comes back and breaks Eddie out of police custody. After some apologies from Eddie (though if you ask me Venom also should’ve been apologizing but alas) they bond with each other again. Later through the power of love symbiosis, Venom and Eddie acting as one are able to defeat Carnage.

In episode 12, it’s revealed that John is a fragment of The King In Yellow. The cult gives the King the ability to fully realize itself and take over Arthur’s body, but the King is unable to. The part of itself, John, has become so entangled with Arthur that it cannot fully erase Arthur from itself. In the Venom 2018-2021 run (I know, I’m drawing on Cates. i cannot believe I’m using him to prove a point), the King in Black, Knull, is trying to take over Earth. It corrupts symbiotes, makes them nothing more than servants for it. Knull was unable to corrupt the Venom symbiote specifically because it could not burn the light (Eddie) out of it.

I think at least a portion of the Venom fandom agreed in unison that they are married and in love.

And also that the fact that they are a couple and that they even love each other depends a lot on the writer who is taking the run.

Normally I would just avoid and forget those writers who want nothing to do with Symbrock and only undermine him by making him just friends or even less than that. But it makes me genuinely sad when sometimes in comics they say things like:

Eddie was not the favorite and will never be the favorite of the symbiote again because they met Flash, Or that despite everything the symbiote always believed that Eddie was the dumbest of it hosts, and that even after everything Spiderman was always better.

This is a huge win for the other ships, and I respect that. But outside of the whole ship thing, the one phrase that comes to mind every time I see Eddie being crippled by the symbiote. And it's a quote from Frozen, fucking Disney movie xd

I guess it can still be saved and we have more proof that inside it all Symby loves or loved Eddie and that the fact that they thought he was dumb doesn't necessarily mean they didn't love him for who he was. But it also makes me feel that sense of emptiness and that everything that happened before between them didn't mean anything because "Flash was better" or "Spiderman was better".

This run has been a roller coaster of emotions in general. There are so many maybes, because I think the story has been handled so badly. I hope it at least has a satisfactory ending, because they have been trying to end it for almost 3 years and nothing happens.

Anyway. Apparently no one ever really loved Eddie. Dylan I think deep down still wants his dad back, but it's complicated. Symby... they're kind of in a limbo, because it seems like they wants Eddie back, but... no, they does, but it's complicated too. And Sleeper was slipped away from Eddie as if they wasn't his son, and they're just there to help Dylan, so apparently they never cared about Eddie at all. Spectacular🎉

i swear to god, listen, we got the "did you just say that you love me? yeah you did" and the "maybe a little" in that pretty and silly beach scene so they better give me the married couple in the third movie or else.

I don't want to look throughout the whole movie with magnifying glasses to find crumbs of symbrock, no, no. I want their relationship to be as clear as holy water because, guess what, THEY'RE FUCKING MARRIED. So, dont you dare put a love interest for Eddie when he got Venom already and they love each other, your honour.

Been seeing so many amazing demon/ghost!ghost and regular soap and OFMG, beautiful. It’s incredible. I could stare at pieces for 5 hours at a time. (favorite ones of mine are pieces by @/s3rrrpentine on twt)

And now I have random ideas of where demon ghost purposely messes with soap during a meeting. To test his ‘follower’. You know, wrapping cold writhing black tentacles around soaps waist. Maybe some even wiggling over and around soaps chest. Just barely grazing soaps skin. It would cause soaps breath to hitch. Every damn time. It drove soap mad and it turned ghost on. (💀) Normally, soap wasn’t this sensitive. But after a couple of….previous rounds with the demon, soap was left shuddering under the sudden touch. Ghosts deep chuckle reverberated in soaps mind, leaving him shivering from how freezing cold ghosts ‘limbs’ were. If soap wasn’t in a meeting he’d assume he was about to take part in shitty tentacle hentai.

God now I’m thinking about those symbrock fics, with venom playing with Eddie in public. It all happens under Eddie’s clothes of course, and I can see that with demon ghost and soap. Soap struggling so hard when talking to a store clerk, feeling a tentacle lazily push in and out of him. “Johnny. Focus.” A deep voice speaks to him in his thoughts. Soap knew that voice. It was the bastard who was currently messing with him, in public. And also a demon. The one haunting him, ghost. Well he liked to call him ghost, the demon never said his name.

Though when we’re details like that ever important?

“Go fuck yourself.” Soap snapped under his breath, glaring at the tiled ground. But he was answered with a sharp thrust. This time something a bit bigger than the first ‘intruders.’ (Sorry calling tentacles by the term intruders is so fucking funny to me) Soap almost teared up at the uncomfortable burning stretch he felt. “Speak nicer to me.” Ghost responded. If soap could see his face, he knew that jerk would be smiling right now. And if he could? He’d kick that jerks ass.

“Is something the matter sir?” The clerk asked, it wasn’t hard to tell that they were concerned. Who wouldn’t be though? A weird customer flushed pink, shaking, and muttering under their breath. Not to mention, as soon as the customer walked up to the counter, it got cold. Strange. The store was set at a comfortable temperature. The clerk wasn’t even under a vent.

“A-aye! Aye. everything’s fine.” Soap eyes shifted back up to the clerk, god this was embarassing. “…alright then. Will this be all?” The clerk questioned. Placing each item into bags with practiced precision. “Uhm, ay-hng!” Soap was cut off, rude, by a cold tentacle tugging at his hair. The clerk looked at soap. Almost in a judgmental way. (Looking like 🤨) “Sorry- I’m sorry- aye that’ll be all. Please. Thanks.” He quickly paid for his stuff, grabbed his bags, and made a run towards the doors.
