Close to Vermeer
Tumblr media
Close to Vermeer    [trailer]
Behind the scenes look at how the largest Vermeer exhibition was put together that took place during the first half of 2023 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
It's unlikely that a painting will ever make me feel as highly emotional as it happens more than once to some experts in this doc. But it's still fascinating to get a few impressions of what's going on in preparation of such an exhibition, and to listen to people with expert knowledge.
There's quite a bit of tension towards the end when it comes to the question if one painting is truly from Vermeer. The organisers from the Rijksmuseum "overrule" the Washington experts, who reached the conclusion about their own Vermeer that most likely it isn't a real one. I wonder what the female conservators from the US were thinking when they learned about that decision.
It's a reminder how much uncertainty is involved when it comes to the history of old paintings. Even if the stakes aren't always as high as the recently discovered "Leonardo".
The collector Thomas S. Kaplan remains an odd figure. He seem passionate about what he's doing. But his name dropping of fellow billionaires and telling of anecdotes from auctions is awkward. Though unlike many other filthy rich collectors he's at least willing to frequently share his collection with the public at exhibitions.

"Close to Vermeer"
This documentary has given me the tools not only to see Vermeer's works differently, but has fostered an appreciation and admiration of the artist that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
From February 10 through June 4, 2023 at the renowned Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the largest retrospective exhibition of works by the artist Johannes Vermeer was open to the public. This once in a lifetime exhibition saw and unprecedented 28 of the 37 known paintings by the 17th century master on display, with the museum breaking all attendance records with over 650,000 visitors. Tickets sold out…

Birthday... right, the day mortals celebrate their day of creation, even the souls in the afterlife still did this, you see it nearly all the time. Rae did not remember hers, she's not sure if that's the result of time & age, or if she just never had one.
A tradition of cake & making a wish? What... does one wish for on their birthday? And what would a reaper wish for? The x shaped pupils went from looking at Adam, back to the cake as he gestured to it again, finger resting coming against her chin at those thoughts filtered through her brain.
Whatever she was doing with her piece of paper & pen, they were set aside after a moment of thought, fingers gripped the edge of the plate to drag the cake closer too her. Cheeks puff, surprisingly adorably with air, &...
'I wish... Adam could find his happiness, & I could met his wife.'
... releases the air she stored in those cheeks through her mouth, making the tiny embers on the candle be swept out by her breath.

“Oh yea, I guess you wouldn’t really know. Uh. Let’s see. So, I guess we can’t really tell what day you were created or born so I’ve decided that today is the day that I give you a birthday.”
He motions to the cake again as if just presenting it. “Happy birthday Rae! It’s tradition to have cake and blow out candles and make a wish. I should know, I started it.” Well, Eve did but she’s not here to tell otherwise. “So blow out your candles so we can get to chowing down!”

Notes:
Fantastic capture of this incredibly immersive and beautiful production. there is a bar in the bottom right corner of the screen that doesn't take away except for one moment where Gandalf and Frodo are talking on the stairs in act one, but overall I worked around it and you can always see Frodo and sometimes Gandalf. At points people are in the audience and I wasn't able to capture them but you can always hear them and I do my best to always try to make sure to capture anything in the audience that I could. Some washout and shakiness throughout.

Notes:
Beautiful Capture of Abe, Larkin and Haley's last performance with the company. My camera was having a lot of issues for Act 1, 2 minutes is missing during ready set (still has audio), And then after every song there's a short 2 second blackout. Act 2 is perfect with no issues with my camera. Also the last US stop before a month break and then Mexico! Some washout and shakiness throughout.

To Everyone Keeping Up With The Barbarians
I have been heavily considering postponing the next chapter until next Monday due to everything going on in the US right now, but I think that it's important to remember the reasoning for why Suzanne Collins wrote the original Hunger Games in the first place. I believe that her reasoning hits just as hard now, and it is just as important. This was going to be included in an A/N on the chapter for tomorrow, but I decided that I want this to be a separate post.
This series will continue as scheduled, but if you need to take a break from it to protect your peace and try to keep yourself from spiraling, then by all means, please do so. I understand the reflection onto our own nation can hit too close to home sometimes, I promise that the series will still be here for you when you return. If you want to use it as a distraction from everything, that's also so, so incredibly valid.
No matter what, you are loved, and you are not alone.
(taglist for the series:)
