WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH: fossil records, ravens, and layering with dg nanouk okpik

This week we feature Alaskan poet dg nanouk okpik (b. 1966). Born in Anchorage, okpik is Inupiaq, Inuit, though she was raised by a white adoptive family. She’s taught at the Institute of American Indian Arts and served as resident advisor for the Santa Fe Indian School. Her most recent collection blood snow was a finalist for the 2023 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. The poems featured here are drawn from her first collection, corpse whale, published in 2012 by University of Arizona Press as part of the Sun Tracks series. Sun Tracks was established in Tuscon in 1971 to highlight the creative work – writing as well as visual arts – of Native Americans. corpse whale won an American Book Award and the May Stanton Award.

In his foreword to corpse whale, Arthur Sze highlights the layering of time in okpik’s poems, and suggests a “visionary quest” for some eternal element at the core of the work: “Past, future, and present co-exist, and this underlying conception of time strengthens the mythical elements in her work.”

Speaking with Southeast Review after the release of blood snow, okpik explains Sze’s profound influence on her own work – she studied with him at the Institute of American Indian Arts – and the way her poetics is shaped and layered by such influences, as well as her travels: “my diction is a composite of these travels and many stories told. It is comprised of beauty and the agony of man’s struggles. In eight types of symbolism that come naturally to me. I let the writing speak for itself.”

holy shit watch out for the words

"dog" is a later model of the DCA, part of a group that was mass-produced for a short period. he uses the same base code & design, but he's lost the majority of his original characteristics from repeated rebuilds and heavy modding. he's a heel for a bot fighting ring.

once made for much lighter showbiz, dog uses his loud announcer's voice to hype up fights and taunt the audience. his job is to make them hate him, it's all part of the show.

outside of the ring, all that put-on energy and bravado vanishes. sirius avoids talking and direct eye-contact, his pupils always looking up and away in any direction other than the person who's addressing him. it tends to give him a sneering, sarcastic look, even if the rest of his face is entirely immobile. his passive-aggressive remarks and constant deflections don't help.

he's an antagonist(*?) in a fic im working on, but its not in any kind of presentable state yet. i'll be honest. its dca/reader. my bad

I think the problem to me is that people who are mainly into the fandom side of star wars don't get that Maul is not the loud, dramatic monologuing villain he seems like around Obi-Wan. he is only "overconfident" in battle. every time he takes over a place or organization he has someone else be the public leader while he rules behind the scenes. he's nearly impossible to track down. he doesn't want to be the center of attention. he doesn't like when people pay attention to him. unless he wants to kill them

This comic is based on @linderosse 's Weilders of Wisdom comic where EoW and AoL Zelda are the same person. I am obssessed with that concept and the angst potential it has.

I decide to put my own personal twist on it, where Silent's (EoW Link) ghost lingers in the chamber where Aurora/Echo slept, unable to move on to the after life. Phantom (ST Zelda) is able to see spirits and ghosts after the events of her game and reasures Silent that what happend centuries ago was not his fault. Poor boy feels like he failed to protect his princess 😢

the tl;dr: i had the crazy idea of making a small model carousel to display my DCA pins on. and since i'm having a bit of an artblock, this will provide a good break for me.

also apologies for the delay on replying to asks! you're all so sweet and your messages always brighten my day. i will get to you as soon as i can! i'm just arting a little slower as of late :')

so i ordered the youtooz dca pins because i earn adult money now and this is what i choose to spend that adult money on. and i realized i'm probably not gonna wear them because i'd be too scared of losing them, but i also don't wanna just put them in a box or frame them (some are bobble-headed and some dangle! i gotta let them move yknow?)

then this crazy idea came to mind... what if i made a tiny model carousel to display the pins on? that way they're displayed safely, but they are free to move around and be played with and i can remove them if i ever DO feel comfortable wearing them out. and if i ever get more DCA pins or keychains (like fan merch yknow 😍) then i can always add another "tier" to the carousel and make it taller. or i can mix and match what goes on the carousel. i also already have a lazy susan (i bought a pack of them from amazon for my spices and sauces) so, i could just put the model on it to make it spin (so i don't even need to make the spinning base!)

so yeah, this is going to be occupying my time and brain for the next couple of days (i'm somewhat going through a bit of an artblock too, so this will help me take a little break)

everything is now back in stock on my shop, though some items have very limited availability. additionally, i learned a LOT from my first round of sales and made some adjustments! i've dropped prices on all my prints, and untracked shipping is now $1 flat for small prints and stickers in the US and $3 international! sadly large prints will still be $7 tracked and US only since they have to be shipped as a package
