i just opened my eyes to cryptid kel after the thorough petting headcanons, you're planting comforting the sad creature in my head and I have to ask (I HAVE NOT READ CALL OF THE VOID BTW ) what happens if you hit him with the "can i hug you, kel?" like, this hypothetical where he's presumed dead and My Ass (another canary) gets sent out there and finds him getting familiar with something that might terrify you the same way Arirals might terrify you at first if you found his ID tag, noted the resemblance, saw his name.... would he even want to hear his name? what would it mean to him? what would that physical human touch mean to Kel after 100 days of this? being able to get close enough to tell him you know, and you care? from someone in the same position he was in? would he just run? i think i'm addicted to comfort in writing..... i'm just thinking about hugging and petting on this wet crying beast and (attempting) cooking him something familiar what the FUCK

Hehehehe. Well, first off, thank you for the amazing, well thought-out ask! It truly means a lot! I'm really glad that Kelryptid is getting into other's brains the same way it is mine. I'm a hugeee fan of comfort, and Kelryptid has always been a "Hmm. Dr.Kel who has gone through the horrors, but worse" and is a prime target for hurt/comfort type things.

Making a cut here because this answer is going to get very long ^w^ I'm just yaptimus prime. Dw about it :}

I always knew that Kelryptid would have gone through something horrible, even before I wrote CotV. I just had to figure out what that would be! Considering the cool animal horns and claws theme I had going on with Kelryptid, I figured having whatever happened to Kel be related to Furfur would make the most sense.

Well, I won't spoil what happens in CotV for you, and of course I would recommend reading it, but I understand that there isn't always time to sit down and read a 32k word fic haha x) I get it! I will say chapter 1 is split kind of cleanly into two halves, and there's a good stopping point about halfway through, right before it speaks of the seasons changing.

I've had a hypothetical scenario for a while now cooking in my head that I actually made up with another person in which another canary comes after Kelryptid, and finds him. However, in order for this to happen, a few things would need to occur.

the arirals don't take Kel with them when/if they leave, OR the arirals haven't left yet and are staying there with him, OR its an AU scenario where he isn't as close with the arirals.

Kel has to convince his superiors, without a shadow of a doubt, that he is either dead, or too far gone to be a functional canary anymore, so that they have to get a new one. This means a few things.

This would mean that:

Kel would have to convince Kerfur to not upload any information regarding his status to their boss

Kel would have to quit doing his job suddenly, in an unexpected way. He'd always been diligent, even in kelryptid form, always sending 4-8 level 3 signals a day. He'd have to go from that, to absolutely nothing, and hide from the delivery drone that shows up each night, and NOT touch the drives and MREs left for him whatsoever. He cannot leave a trace of activity that might hint to him being human or alive anymore

Kelryptid originally chooses to continue to do his job at Dunkeltaler woods to prevent the need for the arrival of another canary. Though he is unaware of the term 'canary' he is aware that the longer he survives, the longer he can save someone else from ending up in the same fate as he did. So he would originally keep working. So, something has to make him snap. Something has to make him choose to stop, despite knowing what will happen. Likely, the loneliness eventually becoming unbearable would do this, but I can imagine some sort of fucked up dream event or entity that feeds on negative emotion kicking off what makes him break and go through with trying to get another canary sent.

He would feel incredibly guilty the entire time, but once he decides to try to convince Bao he's no longer functional by stopping, he wouldn't be able to attempt such a stunt again, because they'd get wise to his antics. He only has one shot at it, and as the weeks drag on without him completing a single chore, and ignoring things, it eats away at him more, and more.

When the next canary finally arrives- it would find that the Alpha Base is left nice for them, full of notes left behind, notes with helpful tips and guides for how to survive. Detailed descriptions of entities, and how to deal with them. Elaborate cork-boards. Pictures of everything. Many notes with "sorry" written down on them. A bookshelf with 25 journals on them, each volume with the notes written about 2-6 days, telling his story, his experiences. His descent.

If another canary showed up in this scenario (the only scenario that I can forsee in which this happens) he would be so terrified to approach it. He would feel responsible. He'd sit, and watch from the shadows, hiding places, where you could only barely see him, and if spotted, he would run away, hiding.

You could still gain his trust though. Let him know it's alright. It's not like you had a life outside of this job, anyway. His notes left behind for you are cryptic, but kind, obviously looking out for you. He doesn't want to be seen, wouldn't want someone to look too closely at the monster that he's become.

To be hit with the "Can I hug you, Kel?" to hear his name would have his ears perking up. That's his name. It would mean good things to him. To him, he's still Kellin. As fucked up as he is, he'd just be happy to hear someone talking to him. Just hearing the voice of another person would soothe him. And, well, it would also break him.

Physical human touch after this amount of time would destroy him. If he even got close enough to allow for contact, there would already have to have been a long period of gaining his trust. But, say this has already happened? And you tell him that you know, and you care?

To be offered a hug- I'm not sure if he'd be able to accept something like that right away. Assuming trust has been gained, first? He probably would accept it. He would crumple and weep and become so, so small, despite some of the monstrous lankiness that has increased his size. He's still human in there. He's still lost. He's still scared, and vulnerable. And just needs to be held. If you showed him any affection at all, he would never leave your side for a moment after that. He would cry from it, absolutely. Big, ugly tears kinda cry. The most vulnerable kind of cry. After that, he'd really just follow you around- warm, fluffy, purring, and perhaps even a bit desperate for attention. He's touch starved. He needs it. He can't bear to be alone anymore.

That whole touch chart I sent would generally just be what happens initially, though after more trust is gained, pretty much anywhere is fair game, he's too needy to be picky at this point. He'd still have some boundaries, of course, but he'd let you even feel his whiskers and boop his nose if he trusts you enough. He'd let you play with his mane, his ears, his tail. The fur on his back. He'd let you scratch the rough spots where his quills bunch up. He'd purr so loud for you, forever in your debt.

All the while, though, he would never be able to stop apologizing. Always feeling like it's his fault you got sent there- even though, truly, you're both the victims of the same situation. Now, though, you have a friend. You can work together. You can survive this horrible place, with a guide, who is changed, but genuinely has your best interests at heart.

Just mind when he starts to get hungry. I've mentioned it before, but I'll mention it here again! Kelryptid does get a set of 'cravings' that can be satisfied in a number of ways:

Mauling something

Eating something

Destroying something

Usually digging his claws into the concrete walls of the ASO is enough. His cravings never get unbearable, nor do they increase to an unsustainable rate- they're about constant. He'll be satisfied for a couple weeks, a week, or a few days, depending on what from that list he does, and what kind of stuff he eats. If he goes without doing any of those things, the cravings increase until about a month out, when they're at their worst, and kind of level off from there, not getting better, but not getting worse, either.

They're still manageable and he'd be able to have the mental faculties to prevent him from killing anything, especially not his new friend. Anything with a pulse though should be advised that he's got a little brain demon screaming at him in the back of his mind to go for the vitals and tear them out and drink the blood from it. It's fine. He'll be fine. Just don't think too hard about it.

He'd get really jumpy and touchy during these times and probably just try to keep himself distant for your own safety until he's gone and found something to become satisfied, and then he can safely come within arm's reach again. Then he would be very apologetic and clingy. No he won't explain what happened. No you didn't see him washing blood off of his face earlier and licking his claws and arms clean like a cat. What. No. You must have been seeing things.

And he would LOVEE LOVE IF U MADE HIM FOOD!!! He'd get big ol' eyes and be like OvO. Hug and pet on the wet crying beast. He's very sopping wet and pathetic. He'd offer scritches with his big ol claws in return if you wanted them. If you weren't too freaked out by his weird hands. If that was ok. If hes not being weird. Poor man is a BUNDLE of social anxiety made worse by being cryptidified

Byeah the "future canary" AU for Kelryptid is SUPER angsty and not the direction I'll be taking CotV, but I'm going to hope to end CotV in a way that other stories can use the ending as a springboard to start off from, and could potentially go that direction still :] there's so many fun things you can do with the cryptid Kel idea and I kind of chew on them all!!
