kind of hate that western society jumped from "dark skin is coarse and common and also ugly, whether natural or acquired from sun exposure" to "no actually tanning is The Beauty Standard (if you have naturally light skin) (still going to be racist about it) and anything bad that the entire medical establishment has to say about it is either fake or will Definitely Never Happen To You, Personally. also pale skin makes you look sick :/"
like
I feel as if we should have tried harder to find a more nuanced stance there, guys
#beauty standards#tanning is actually bad for you in any quantity. your skin tone should never get darker than it is in winter#skincare#sun protection

With the intense heat going on at the moment, we thought it would be good to post a little heat protection check list!
We know these concerts are very intense and we all want to be close and have a good spot, but it’s really important to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun in this weather 🏳️🌈🧡🫶

for years id hear people say "don't look at the sun during a solar eclipse, you'll go blind!!" And so i thought that there was something different about the sun during a solar eclipse that made you go blind instantly or something. Well, turns out I was wrong. it's literally just because it's the sun and looking at the sun will damage your eyes. Never understood why there was so much emphasis on not looking at the sun during a solar eclipse but no education on not looking at the sun in general!

Sol Brush: Powder Sunscreen vs. Sunscreen Spray — Which Is Better?
When it comes to sun protection, finding the right product can feel like picking your favorite flavor of ice cream. There are so many options, each with its own unique appeal! Two popular contenders in the sun care arena are powder sunscreen and sunscreen spray. Both have their strengths, but which one truly reigns supreme? Let’s break it down.
The Case for Powder Sunscreen
Powder sunscreen, like the innovative Sol Brush, is gaining traction for good reason. Imagine protecting your skin from harmful UV rays without the greasy residue of traditional sunscreens. Powder sunscreen comes in a compact, easy-to-apply format that fits seamlessly into your daily routine.
Here’s why people love it:
Mess-Free Application: Powders glide on effortlessly and don’t leave your hands sticky or greasy.
Perfect for Touch-Ups: Unlike creams or sprays, powders are ideal for reapplication throughout the day, especially over makeup.
Travel-Friendly: The lightweight packaging makes it easy to toss into your bag without fear of spills or leaks.
Great for Oily Skin: Powder sunscreens often have a mattifying effect, making them a go-to for those with shiny or acne-prone skin.
That said, powder sunscreens aren’t without limitations. They typically offer a lower SPF range and can require a bit more diligence during application to ensure full coverage.
The Case for Sunscreen Spray
Sunscreen sprays have been around for years, celebrated for their convenience and efficiency. With just a quick spritz, you can cover large areas of skin, making them a favorite for beach days and outdoor adventures.
Here’s why sunscreen sprays are a fan favorite:
Quick and Easy: Sprays are perfect when you’re in a hurry or need to cover hard-to-reach places like your back.
Great for Families: Covering squirmy kids in sunscreen has never been easier!
Even Coverage: When applied correctly, sprays can provide a nice, even layer of protection.
However, sprays come with their own set of challenges. Windy days can make application tricky, and it’s easy to miss spots if you’re not careful. Plus, some sprays can feel sticky or leave a shiny finish.
So, Which Is Better?
The answer ultimately depends on your lifestyle and personal preferences. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide:
On-the-Go Professionals or Makeup Lovers: Powder sunscreen, like Sol Brush, is your best bet. It’s discreet, compact, and perfect for touch-ups.
Outdoor Enthusiasts and Families: Sunscreen sprays win for their speed and ability to cover large areas quickly.
Why Not Both?
If you’re serious about sun protection, there’s no reason you can’t use both! Start your day with a sunscreen spray for base coverage and carry a powder sunscreen for reapplications throughout the day. This combo ensures you’re protected no matter where life takes you.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, the best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually use. Whether you gravitate toward the lightweight ease of powder sunscreens like Sol Brush or the breezy convenience of sprays, the key is consistency. Sun protection isn’t a one-and-done deal; it’s a daily ritual that keeps your skin healthy and radiant.
So, which team are you on? Powder sunscreen or sunscreen spray? Let us know in the comments below—and don’t forget your SPF!

☀️Daily Sunscreen Review (with swatches)☀️
Review is for sensitive dry/combo skin without breakouts. Skin color is fair olive/neutral. No makeup. Current environment is dry and cold with no sweating. Price range is $-$$ and none of the products will go to waste 😉
Im on a few medications that make me sensitive to the sun. I usually use Bare Republic Mineral Matte 30 for my face but recently discovered I’ve been having reactions to shea so I needed to find a replacement. Below is my review of several promising products:
TLDR: Vanicream Face SPF + Supergoop Powder in “translucent” for a daily SPF that’s easy to wash off. CoTZ “lightly tinted” Face Moisture SPF for days when I’m going out and need my SPF to be more durable and inconspicuous. All SPFs will be applied over an emollient moisturizer (Vanicream Face Moisturizer) to prevent skin drying and irritation. Lip SPF will be COOLA brand with Dermatone as a cheaper backup. Don’t forget to patch test. I used SkinSort app, EWG Skin Deep and product reviews to find suitable products and still had some reactions during this trial.
Here are my requirements:
Can’t be too expensive to use daily
Has to be a sensitive formula & without shea
Vegan and cruelty free
Preferably leaning matte rather than dewy or greasy
Layers well on top of moisturizer
Untinted or lightly tinted mineral formula but without a super noticeable white cast when applied on fair skin

Swatch Notes (in order of application)
Vanicream Facial Moisturizer with SPF 30 // Cheapest formula I tried. I use a lot of Vanicream products so I was confident it would be sensitive enough. Goes on white but blends out to be clear & shiny. You can use powdered sunscreen on top of it for a matte effect. ($13.97 for 2.5 oz)
Sun Bum Mineral Sunscreen Face Lotion SPF 30 (untinted version) // Formula was the most similar to the Bare Republic formula which has a very soft and powdery feel that I like. It dries matte but has a white cast. ($20.49 for 1.7 oz)
Cetaphil Sun Sheer Mineral Face Sunscreen SPF 50 // Haven’t tried it on my face yet. Reviews say it can be drying and leaves a white cast. That combined with it being twice as water resistant as the others makes me hesitant to use it daily on my face. It might be worth having if I know I’m going to be out in the sun & possibly getting wet. Second cheapest formula but I the Vanicream is a better value for me. ($12.59 for 1.7 oz)
Sun Bum Mineral Sunscreen Face Lotion SPF 30 (tinted version) // I had the highest hopes for this one and it was the biggest disappointment. While the untinted version was a dupe for Bare Republic this formula was more similar to CoTZ. CoTZ ended up being my favorite so I was hoping I could use this as a cheaper dupe but I had a pretty quick allergic reaction to it. When I did a larger swatch of the three tinted SPFs my other arm I quickly started to swell and turn red where I had applied the SunBum. I washed it off with Dawn and took some H1 & H2 blockers. I still ended up with a 3” goose egg on my arm that’s hard to see in pictures. This is why we patch test instead of lathering it on our faces! ($20.49 for 1.7 oz)

5. CoTZ Lightly Tinted Face Moisture Mineral Sunscreen SPF 35 // The most expensive sunscreen I tried (not counting the powders). Goes on creamy and dries to a semi matte finish that is suitable for a no makeup look. The color is neutral and blends perfectly into my fair olive skin tone so much so that it’s hard to see where I was applying it. It’s water resistant for 80 minutes. Feels a little moisturizing when applying but does need to go over an emollient moisturizer or it will start to feel drying later in the day. ($29.50 for 1.5 oz)
6. First Aid Beauty Weightless Liquid Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 // It’s a little too dark and orange for me but might be passable in the summer? An oily formula that needs to be shaken often during application but blends well into the skin and ultimately dries matte. I don’t think it feels particularly drying but I haven’t used it much. It’s the second most expensive sunscreen I tried (even more expensive if you buy it in store) and I won’t be repurchasing. ($24.99 for 1.5 oz)
NOT PICTURED…
Block Star Bliss Sheer Tinted Daily Sunscreen SPF 30 // Way too dark and orange for my skintone but practically disappeared on husbands face. He works outside in the sun all year and wears SPF everyday. He likes it and has started to wear this brand daily although he’s not picky and will gladly use up any of the SPF I don’t use. Dries matte and isn’t super expensive for a tinted face SPF. ($14.99 for 1.4 oz)
Supergoop Resetting Mineral Powder SPF 35 // Very expensive and probably shouldn’t be worn on its on because of the inconsistent coverage that powdered SPF offers. It is amazing for topping off other sunscreens throughout the day and adds a nice matte finish to greasy or dewy looking sunscreens. It’s also easier to apply to your hairline than a wet sunscreen. The “Light” tinted version is darker than I would prefer but the “Translucent” works well and doesn’t look like white powder when applied to fair skin. ($35 for one)
Hawaiian Tropic Mineral Powder SPF 30 // I tried it first to see how layering a powder sunscreen would work before buying anything more expensive. It doesn’t have shea but it does have mango which is another ingredient I’m allergic to but I had overlooked. I was fine with the patch test but had a reaction when I applied it to my face. The dispenser doesn’t really work and is no where near as effective as the Supergoop powder dispenser. It looked fine on fair skin and was on sale for $10 when I bought it.
Lip Balms
Coola Liplux SPF 30 // Not mineral. No white cast. No sunscreen taste. Nice container and firm smooth texture. ($12.00 for one)

Dermatone Lip Balm SPF 30 // Not mineral. No white cast. Very subtle sunscreen taste or smell. Goes on really smooth and works well in cold temperatures but may be too soft for summer use. Green Tea is my favorite flavor from the variety pack. Very mild pleasant and refreshing flavor. Coconut & Original are both good as well. ($9.99 for 3)

honestly the positioning of common-sense sun protection- hats, parasols/sun umbrellas, sunscreen, etc. -as either prissy and affected or unnecessary anti-aging obsession is one of the most dangerous lines we've collectively been fed as a society, for 100 years now
like I get where it all started, I do. there ARE health benefits to sun exposure in moderation, those were starting to be understood around the 1910s, and the 1920s fancied themselves the inventors of science and Women Doing Things OutdoorsTM because of some discoveries made and voting rights gained around that time. tanning was the new miracle cure! it meant you were outdoors and active- with no consideration that the "active" part might be what made people feel good, not so much the endless sun exposure! it spoke to European or tropical holidays!
(if you were white. if you had natural, healthy dark skin, no dice; keep rubbing heavy metals on your body to look lighter. there's just no winning)
and unlike forcing factory workers to ingest radium and other harmful fads of the day, the negative effects took years to surface and weren't yet fully understood for what they were
but it took root so deeply that when sunscreen began gaining just a BIT of a foothold...it became associated with the kind of people who use special wrinkle-prevention straws. and some idiot who thinks skin cancer is caused by eating seed oils just reblogged one of my comments on the matter, linking a weird study that claims tanning-bed use is somehow good for you
god
we are never getting out of the Skin Damage Is Beautiful Industrial Complex, are we?
#sun protection#skincare#fun fact: no sun protection is 100% effective so you still get the UV benefits even if you wear sunscreen#because you're not applying it perfectly. you can't! you're human!#the only vitamin d-deficient person I've known wasn't one of my fellow sunscreen militants#she actually made fun of us after her diagnosis...only for her doctor to explain that it actually wasn't related to sun exposure#in her case#she owed us an apology and a half
