Hey, you! Did you recently complete something big or reach a major milestone in your life? If so, congratulations! Your efforts are paying off, if not now then over time they will show. But first, before doing or planning anything else, you need to sit down for a little while and just… breathe. Breathe deep. Replenish your mind from harrying so much over all that you have had to, have to, or will have to do (that was a mouthful, so I can't imagine how much clutter that is in the brain! I'm feeling that many in this pile are still actively working towards their New Years resolutions. Some in this pile may have had a very busy year, while others here wish to shift gears and become focused on doing more, a lot more than last year. Are you trying to make up for lost time? It's only February, pile one, so you have way more time than it seems to get things straightened out or set into motion. You're not creating a time debt by using your break or time off to actually self soothe, like most people do. Your tenacity is admirable, but in terms of self development, too much push to get things done might set you back.

You must balance between resting and recovery, all while strategically planning for your next course of action. Some of you may be struggling to get organized, but making schedules and lists could help immensely, so you're not spending as much energy trying to remember everything. There are also apps that are designed to help you stay on track, giving you more time to just hang out and be. There is nothing wrong with spending this entire month on decompressing from everything you've had to do. It's not going to happen when you're working on something else. That's a distraction, not progress, to work as a way of avoiding healing. However you decide to relax, make sure it actually involves relaxation. If that means laying in bed and watching TV for the day, then that's what it means. If you relax more by doing a chore, then make it something simple to complete like folding clothes.

Don't feel guilty for taking time off, but don't let the time slip by either. Schedule "Don't-Do-Much" days and see what kind of difference it makes to your productivity and routine over time. Think of this transition as an intermission of sorts. This is your chance to get up, use the restroom, order more popcorn, text a friend, etc. before getting back to your movie. You can choose not to get up, but once the intermission has passed, the movie will not pause for you. So use this opportunity to rest with intention, knowing that when change comes to thrust you into the next phase of life, it may do so unexpectedly fast and you'll be more ready for it.

Keep your ambitions lit up, because even as you rest, those dreams are still at work. Don't think that time off means abandoning any plans or being lazy. It's a matter of decluttering your mind space so you can actually focus on the next thing better, and you can't drain the brain of all your pain if you replace worry with more worry. Life is more than a series of boxes to tick off, saying "what's next? what's next? huh? what's next? HUH??" right after each one is done. If life worked that way, sleep wouldn't be a thing, and likely neither would we, because how can anything sustain that gogogo fever forever? Protect your right to self care, and don't let anyone tell you it's wrong to take time out just for you.

I'm almost reminded of what's it like to delve through Akashic records (or as I call it the Hall of All Knowledge), but this is a more universal, primal energy coming through? The card reminds me of Earth in its early stages when it was all still molten and predominated by immense fiery tectonic activity, fundamental forces bursting from beneath. Instincts can seem basic, but they're powerful. This energy could be coming from within you most likely, but you could be picking up on others' chaotic moods as well. This isn't a force to fight, but to work in your favor. Anger for example isn't wrong, but there's a right and a wrong way of expressing anger. It's a matter of channeling it into a proper medium.

Jay's Love Reading

Well, this is an interesting spread. He seems a bit all over the place when it comes to his love life. He starts with the Trine card, and I usually see this card as a card that shows things falling into place for him when it comes to his love life, things aligning, things coming into balance for him. But most of these other cards don't really show that harmonic energy.

We go to Scorpio energy, along with the 7 of Swords he got. He gave me that card before. He may be meeting someone in secret, maybe others are not aware of this person. He is kind of giving me two energies here, one part he can be pretty cold, logical and strategic. He may be the one who plans out these dates and outings with the other person, but he can also be very romantic and charming and very loving when need be. I can see him going out on dates with this person.

This 6 of Pentacles rv is interesting, there could be a lack of give and take here, one party giving more than the other, this is followed by the Queen of Swords, this could be the person he is sneaking out with. She seems to be mysterious, kept in the dark, and kind of likes it that way. Having the King and Queen of Swords, shows they are quite a pair and a match, they are both pretty intellectual. They most likely stimulate each other mentally.

I am not really seeing too much passionate energy and much love here, but the knight of cup is there. I mean that Scorpio energy he showed in the beginning can show intense passion, so it could be there. I can probably see Jay being the one to put a little more effort into this bond. I am not sure she puts in as much as he does, that could bug him.

His archetype cards are interesting, we got the Monk card, which shows someone who prefers to focus on their own journey and working towards their personal development, so not sure he is completely devoted to build a relationship. He may be trying to work on himself, so this may not be anything too serious. The King of Swords energy also gives me someone who isn't too emotionally invested. Although, the knight of cups can show love. I just see it as him liking to romance his partner and show them a good time, not so much in it for love. He may be reaching towards that goal though. He may see it developing into that.

Now, to this child wounded, he may need to work on some childhood wounds and relationships may help him deal with that, or he attracts or is attracted to individuals with their own wounds, and he works on being understanding and compassionate towards them. Maybe he gravitates towards people like that. He seems to be understanding of other people's struggles.

I can see him showering this person with lots of gifts, but not sure they appreciate it as much. This QOS' just gives me someone who can be pretty cold and doesn't get too excited about things, can be a bit too serious. But this bond does bring some joy and excitement to his life. Maybe he likes the hard to impress type, to win them over. But I can also see him liking her mind and intelligence. I can see them having lots of talks on different topics and having great insightful conversations.

It seems it could be hard for him to balance priorities with his work and relationships. Or he does his best to balance the two, or he tries to create time for both, with his busy schedule, it does seem he puts in the work to meet with this person, so it does seem he does like this person, not sure I see love yet, but he does like this person and puts in the effort to be with them, I say he may put more effort, than the chick, believe it is a female though.

Okay, at first, I thought it would be difficult to decipher this one, but it was pretty smooth sailing. It wasn't that difficult to figure this one out, now the 7 of swords that pops up for him a lot recently makes a little more sense. He was kind of straight forward with this one. So, there is someone, they are dating, he seems to be putting more of the effort, but they seem to enjoy each other's company. The bond seems highly mentally stimulating, more so than anything else.

About Ikegen Management Team Message!

The fact that Ikemen Genjiden Management Team formally send out a statement to thank everyone who send them supportive and kind messages after the announcement of EoS and saying that they themselves are sadder than the players itself really makes me think that Ikemen Genjiden must have been their passion project. This really feels like a shut-down that is forced rather than planned like Ikemen Revolution. Correct me, if I'm wrong, because Ikemen Revolution suddenly stopped releasing new trailers for their game out of nowhere, and sometime after, they formally announced their EoS. Usually, an EoS of a game means that, a new game announcement is right around the corner. Ikemen Revolution was killed to bring out Ikemen Villains. But I feel like Ikemen Genjiden's EoS is out of nowhere. I don't really think they planned this to happen, at least not this year. I don't know. Everything really feels sus, because they just released Kurama and Ibuki's sequel and everything was going well. Let's just wait and watch if there will actually be an announcement for a new Ikemen game this year or not.

According to them the management team haven't changed since the start of the development of the game, which means, every single member in the management team has longing memories for this game.

The story is about Rikka was already in development 2 years before the game's launch, and he is meant to be the counterpart to Tamamo and the starting point of the whole Genjiden story. According to the Management team, the story hasn't even reached its full potential yet. If the game was still on-going, we would have been able to see more crazy things unfold. It's sad that no matter how many kind words and encouragement to continue the game we sent, nothing will change because at the end of the day, it's a business and this is a strategic decision made for making profits.

The management team, did say that they will try and release as many stories as possible before the end day. So lets' look forward to that.

I really love the management team of Ikemen Genjiden. They are so creative and passionate about Ikemen Genjiden that it saddens me that the game did not get the recognition it rightfully deserves. People were asking for the English release, but they don't seem to understand that if the Japanese market doesn't do well, they won't be releasing it in English. That's why I have always been saying people to go play the Japanese app if you're that interested to play the game. But whatever. This was bound to happen someday.

When I saw the introduction of Rikka, I had hope that this game would at least go on until Rikka's story is released but I guess it did not and that makes me even more sad. Rikka is such an interesting character and I'm still dying to know more about him. I wish, if they are not going to release a main story, they at least release an event of something or give out free stories about Rikka just so that the fans could learn more about him. The fact that everything about this character is now going to disappear in fucking space.....I'm sad. I'm really really sad.

I wish that this Management Team really gets the praise that they truly deserve. I hope this same Management Team, comes together again and create new game which could be even better than Ikemen Genjiden. This Management Team has the potential to create stories that truly touches one's heart and soul. A MC like Yoshino who is so beautiful and lovable than any MC I have ever seen in my life. Eccentric but lovable suitors with very unique and some of which have never-before-seen personalities. Hilarious brain-dead nonsensical humor. Amazing and heart-touching dialogues. Beautiful music. Beautiful art style. Best cast of VAs ever. Everything about this game is so positive that I'm dying from the inside when I see my child slowly dying.

I love you, Ikemen Genjiden Management Team. You guys are literally the GOAT!!! I really hope you guys do well in the upcoming years and have more opportunities to shine!!! I'll always pray that upcoming projects get recognition it deserves!

My thoughts: I don't know if there is a wolfstar shipper who hasn't read this story, but it is amazing. A majority of the story is told through text messages, which is a real creative choice and I absolutely believed the author pulled it off!

I Know Not, and I Cannot Know; Yet I Live and I Love

Severus Snape has his emotions in check. He knows that he experiences anger and self-loathing and a bitter yearning, and that he rarely deviates from that spectrum… Until the first-year Luna Lovegood arrives to his class wearing a wreath of baby’s breath. Over the next six years, an odd friendship grows between the two, and Snape is not sure how he feels about any of it.

My thoughts: A fanfiction that explores the relationship between a student and a teacher that doesn't make it romantic??? Hallelujah, never thought I would see the day. Not gonna lie, this is my favorite fanfiction of all time. While I like Snape in the original story, he doesn't develop as a character, like, at all. Which is why I can see why people don't like him, but this story gives him some development, and his relationship with Luna is absolutely heartwarming. And to those fans who think Harry got over his abuse of Snape too fast, I recommend this to you. Not sure you know, but Snape fucking dies in the book (spoilers, I know), and the author makes sure to give Harry some development too. Bring tissues, because you're gonna cry.

how to fall in love with a catfish: a guide by wei wuxian (disaster rat)

Summary:

A new plan hatches in Wei Wuxian’s head. If this nocturnal, bottom-feeding, slimy, invasive mudcat posing as a beautiful actor thinks he can sway Wei Wuxian with animal pictures and a sob story and an unbelievably stilted way of texting with still no dick pictures in the first five minutes of conversation, he has another thing coming. Wei Wuxian’s got it, alright, he has this in the fucking bag. Wei Wuxian plots to expose a catfish using strategic memes and turtle pictures while wiggling his way out of family dinner. Lan Wangji just wants companions.

My thoughts: Another catfishing story?!?! Except not really because Wei Wuxian has issues. Not gonna lie, I've only read this once, but god damn, did it destroy me. I don't reread it because I don't like it, but because I'm afraid of feeling all those emotions again. You know how I said the last story has no consequences, well this one has all of them. Watch Wei Wuxian as he slowly destroys his life, before finally putting himself back together and allowing himself to accept love. Another story you will need tissues for.

My thoughts: I hate zombie movies, but I am absolutely fine with zombie fics. The story starts like how all good Wei Wuxian stories start: with him fucking dying. Watch a dead man build a family and slowing piece himself back together (metaphorically, he isn't falling apart due to decay)

Shen Yuan tried not to think of his original family too often, his parents, his brothers, and sister… Nope. Done with that train of thought. He’s Shen Qingqiu now. This was a new life, and he has a new family to look after. Sometimes a family consists of 12 martial sibilings and a whole lot of disciples. Just a buncha fluff of Shen Qingqiu, Shang Qinghua, their martial sibilings and the kids. Shenanigans ensue.

My thoughts: Another purely fluffy fic, though I have to mention something I really like about it. You see, I have a bit of a pet peeve when canon divergence fanfiction basically follow all of the important plot points from the original story. This story does that, but it doesn't do the scenes in full and only really mentions that it happened, and I think it's great. I don't need to read about Sha Hualing's demon invasion for the 50th time, let's move on and get to the things that matter! Like Shang Qinghua in wedding robes. Also there's a lot of platonic cumplane, which I could never get enough of.

Recovery

Summary:

Luo Binghe returns to Cang Qiong Mountain with a grievously injured Shen Qingqiu. The trouble is, it's the wrong Shen Qingqiu. AKA The original Shen Qingqiu gets a happy ending, whether he likes it or not.

My thoughts: There aren't many fanfictions I have found that depict Shen Jiu in all his cruel glory. People usually sand him down, like, 'oh, he didn't actually give Luo Binghe his cultivation notebook, that was Ming Fan', or, 'he was more neglectful than monstrous'. I don't mind these interpretations of Shen Jiu, but I feel like stories are more rewarding when you try to heal the man at his scummiest. Recovery is a multi part serious that slowly shows Shen Jiu recover (see what I did there??) from what Bingge has done to him, while also finally finding happiness with Yue Qingyuan.

When Shen Qingqiu drew Shen Yuan’s soul sword, it felt like being burned from the inside out. The fire wasn’t cruel, but it was still fire—hot and destructive, searing the softest pieces of him.   When Binghe’s fingers touch the hilt, he is ready for pain. Transmigrated into a version of Proud Immortal Demon Way where cultivators manifest their own souls into spiritual weapons, Shen Yuan finds himself sort of kind of…accidentally blackmailing Shen Qingqiu into taking him on as a disciple before Luo Binghe joins the sect. That should give Shen Yuan plenty of opportunities to make sure nothing goes wrong for his favorite protagonist, right? RIGHT!? A story of twists, turns, hope, despair, and soul swords. Written for the Bingqiu Reverse Minibang 2023, illustrated and conceptualized by the incredible Suzu!

My thoughts: The last fic has Shen Jiu healing arc, this one has his father arc. Another story you need tissues for, and for multiple chapters, my god is it hard to read and cry at the same time. Another really good premise that was knocked out of the park by the authors.

Yet he finds himself helping his protagonist son's adoptive mother anyway. Just this one change won't matter too much, right? One little change leads to more. Shang Qinghua never meant to care, but he becomes invested in making sure that his new family survives the looming plot. With the changes to the world cascading around him, with his position as a traitor pulling him between his sect and a certain ice demon, and with the protagonist growing up so quickly, how is one displaced author meant to ensure that everything turns out all right? A Pre-Canon to Canon Divergence story.

My thoughts: I'm gonna be honest, this is the only story on here that I have not finished. I struggle with reading fics that are 400k words long (and by struggle I mean I don't finish them), but this is a story I come back to and reread (and attempt to finish), mostly for one arc. There is a part of the story where Shang Qinghua help look for Luo Jiahui's (Luo Binghe's mom) missing sister, and it is without a doubt the best arc I have ever read in fanfiction. If you are like me and don't like long fanfiction, I still recommend reading this story at least up to that arc, you wont regret it. I also have to say this is my favorite interpretation of Luo Binghe's mom.

My thoughts: Another Tossawary story! This time Shang Qinghua saves Luo Binghe's mom (wait didn't that happen in the last one?) and dad (ok, so it's different). A Moshang focus story where Shang Qinghua tries to avoid having an awkward (and possibly deadly) conversation with Mobei-Jun, which becomes an impossible task because he is now his personal guard. I love the cocenpt of having Shang Qinghua work under Tianlang-Jun, and the interactions between those two are always hilarious.

My thoughts: Ok, it's been many years since I have last read this story, but I still have to add it to my recommendations because of how batshit insane it is. This is a zombie apocalypses story taking place in yugioh, the story where everything is solved by card games. Do you know how they stop the zombie outbreak? CARD GAMES! Like holy shit, this story is crazy, but it's also on brand. I used to be into thiefshipping and other yugioh ships, so if you're like that then I definitely recommend this one.

Annnddd those are my recommendations. Feel free to judge my taste, but I will unapologetically love these stories till the day I die.

"And I've been a guild member in Team Justice for nearly four years now, and my story... isn't those that's expected. There are those who's born with a special ability, or those who are naturally gifted, or those who grew up in this rough world, conditioning themselves their whole life to be used to this and be expert explorers, but rarely do you see people who has no experience at all to have the guts to join an explorer guild, let alone expose themselves to danger. But, it's never zero, and I'm one of them."

"I grew up in a remote town, surrounded by forestry, and just had a normal childhood. Perhaps a bit reclusive due to my shy and introverted nature." She smiles awkwardly. "But nonetheless, I went to school and studied up until high school, before me and my father moved back to living in civilization."

"When we arrived here, at first I was just wondering around High Soul City, seeing what it has to offer. It may be a bit too busy than what I was used to, but I was still adjusting. At the time, I was also visiting college campuses I would be potentially interested to go one day."

"My life seemed pretty normal, right?"

"Well, not after I met someone who's a guild member here at Team Justice. We first met after an attack in the city park. It was scary at first since I had no idea what was going on and what to do, but luckily the guild was quick to respond and a member came in to save the day all on her own. She was none other than the guild's field leader and head councilor, Aires."

"We became friends after it, and when she told me about her occupation, something sparked in me. A desire that I had back then, that I can only experience through novels. Imagine through novels. The desire to explore the vast world and see what it has to offer." Her mood shifts in a more lively one. Saying each word as it motivates her. "What's good and what's bad about it, what's dangerous and what's worth protecting. Though stories would sugarcoat on this and imagine the many possibilities, I wanted to know the real thing. So I insisted in joining the guild, but...I wasn't prepared, nor aware of what's to come."

"Throwing yourself into danger without any experience of defending yourself isn't really the brightest idea, only a fool would think of coming out of it unscathed, but luckily my friend and now partner Aires has been with me, to protect me...but, it felt burdensome to just stay in the sidelines and try not to get killed while your partner is risking her life to get the job done." Her tone turns into a more sullen one. Feeling guilty of replaying old memories. "That's where I decided to prepare myself, develop skills I haven't had yet to be capable of doing harsh missions." But her energy rises up, refueling that fiery passion. "To be deserving of being in this guild in the first place. And with the help of the guild's training program, as well as providing many areas and facilities to train, I have learned so much to be who I am today."

"I was able to learn self-defense as well as bojutsu. Now, I can only rely on skills that I learned rather than what abilities I wish I could've had. The guild also trains you on strategizing as well as adapting you to specific situations such as fighting badniks, jumping through obstacles, escaping traps, and many others. So the guild doesn't help you develop physically but intellectually as well."

"Though at the time, I still had no purpose yet on why I joined here, admittedly. I only came here for the exploration but...I received something else each time. And yet, I also learn something new each time." Her tone shifts into a more serious one. "In the beginning when I couldn't defend myself, I learned that it's difficult to see someone get hurt because of me, so I trained myself how to be reliable, independent." She clenches a fist. "When I started having my Fangs state, I was so scared and upset about everything, upset about myself, upset about fate. Self-hatred. I started regretting this path I took but eventually, I learned to love something about myself that torn me," she gently raises the mood to a more hopeful one, "I managed to find control and focus. I learned how to turn a curse into a gift. And... I also learned more about my partner through that," her face softens, "understand her struggles hands-on. This field of work, and the challenges you face really makes you see more about yourself, and others."

"And with all of that, I feel like a different Juliet than who I used to be years ago. She...used to be reserved, and inexperienced, scared and regretful, a know-it-all but actually doesn't know anything at all. But now, the Juliet you see right now, it's the opposite of those. A better version of who Juliet was those years ago."

She scratches the back of her head, "Things still might be scary but I'm prepared now to find a solution." She offers her open hand upfront.

"And this, is where I found my answer, the purpose of why I came here. It's kind of on the nose" she chuckles a bit, "but-- I feel like it's the purpose I was born to live for."

"Justice."

"Time and time again, we get missions to help others who were wronged, avenge those who were affected in the chaos, argue on those who have ill intentions. I... didn't know I had this in me but...I want to protect those who couldn't protect themselves, I want outspeak those who only say such heartless words, I want...to give justice to people who couldn't protect themselves from evil!"

"The outside world is a harsh one, and it is uncertain how many heartless people exist. But...the least we can do is provide more goodness in the world, more heroes to protect others, and make it a much safer place to be in."

"Anyway, that's my goal atleast. And maybe it's yours too."

"Please, if you're someone who has no special abilities and thinks that you can't do a job like this, don't listen to those thoughts that restricts you and just do it! You'll learn, you'll be prepared, just like I did." She places her hands in her chest.

"And don't worry, you won't be alone in this either. Here in Team Justice, we require members to have atleast a partner or a team with them before being allowed to go to mission, and to also develop your cooperation skills. But in a more broader sense, the guild has got your back to support you in your own hero's journey."

"So, don't be afraid to step out, feel free to join the Team Justice guild! We're accepting new members anytime." She says the last remarks with her eyes smiling along her bright smile.

"Aaand CUT! Okay I think that's good." The director says as he press the screen of the camera to finish the recording. They are shooting in the technical recording room, that's full of light stands and screens in the corners and other kinds of equipment necessary for shooting media. There's one wall being covered by a big draped green wallpaper, while there's a white one on the other side of the room, where they're currently recording Juliet. Iyro, who's just besides the director and was there to monitor the progress, walks forward to Juliet who just stood up from her chair.

"Was that too much? Feel free to cut some of it if it's irrelevant." Juliet said, shyly.

"Nah, I think it's perfect!" Iyro pats her on the shoulder. "We might cut some of it for a shorter post, but I think the long one will definitely bring those who needs encouragement."

"Well...I do hope it can reach others who are like the old me too." Her face softens as she looks at the ground, her cheeks blushing a bit as she smiles. She softly clenches a fist near her chest.

"Hey, don't be so modest. We think you are the perfect ambassador for this campaign, and, we really thank you for accepting it!" Iyro said. "Seeing your progress throughout the years, how much hardwork you put in making yourself grow and for the guild, your story is definitely worth remembering." He continues.

"Th-Thank you very much, Iyro sir."

"And I'm not just saying that because your Aires' partner, alright. These days, I feel like you're becoming your own person, your own hero if you will."

"My own person?"

Iyro smiles, and kneels down, making her look down at her field leader instead. "Juliet, you're capable of so much more, you're getting there. Look at where you are now. You did this with nothing but your own will, your own desire to inspire others."

Juliet looks in awe, somewhat of shyness.

"Look. I know you're still a young girl, but you're already a wise and strong individual."

Her eyes widens.

"And that's what we want to foster in this guild. Interested in helping make that goal of the guild possible?" Iyro extends his hand to him.

"You mean...I can participate in acquiring more recruits?" She asks nervously.

"Well not necessarily that but... what do you want again? What's your goal?"

"My goal? Is..."

"I'd like--I want to make this world a safer place to live in. One that's not full of malice, but love and care for each other." She said, with complete sincerity and determination in her eyes. She extends her hand as well and grab Iyro's, shaking it to signify their agreement.

He looks a little more at her, a bit with a surprise but it quickly changes to a smile, one that shows pride. "Hm. Guess Aires choose the perfect partner afterall."

"Eh?" Juliet suddenly becomes flustered.

He snickers. "I'm just saying... we're just glad to have you here, and have the honor to train someone extraordinary like you."

Her eyes glistens, and blink rapidly before smiling shyly once more. "Thank you for giving me a chance as well." She nods.

He pats her in the head. The two moves and exits the technical recording room. Iyro offers Juliet something to eat in the cafeteria at his expenses, and she politely accepts it. They're expecting for the promotional video to start circulating by next week. Hopefully, garnering new recruits to the guild.

Won't it be a better option to swim in your hard-earned financial and literal independence rather than drown in suffocating debts, student loans, and unpaid hospital bills?

You need only to learn to be more strategic with how you make money work for you for a few months/years and you'll see the fruits of your responsible financial labors that will help you indulge yourself sustainably. It just takes a bit of an adjustment period for you.

The German Marshall Fund’s 2023 Transatlantic Trends survey discovered that younger respondents view NATO as less important, and Chinese and Russian influence more positive, than older generations do. How can we build resonance in practice? Many in the United States are rightly concerned with illegal immigration on the southern border, a view that many are quite vocal about. The part of the argument that is not often articulated is that failure to support Ukraine will almost undoubtedly lead to a broader conflict in Europe that will embroil the United States and send economic shockwaves around the world. Tackling the southern border under those strategic conditions would be exponentially more difficult.

Be open to connection—but be prepared to walk away. Not being attached to an outcome means being ready to pursue a relationship for as long as it runs its course—but no longer. As the alliance looks to the future, it should pursue its institutional partnerships for as long as the vibes remain good. For example, right now NATO is building connections with Australia, Japan, and South Korea because they are like-minded democracies that have useful insights and capabilities to help the alliance grapple with difficult global challenges. Yet the alliance must also move more quickly when circumstances change; NATO was arguably slow to recognize the emerging threat from Moscow, and many of its member states are finding it difficult to insulate themselves against the risk of Chinese economic and political coercion. Enhancing early warning and intelligence-sharing capabilities can usefully help the alliance understand when it’s time to walk away and pursue other options.

Focus on the benefits, not the burdens. Another good way to get ghosted: focusing conversations on one’s drawbacks rather than strengths. For decades, under the moniker of better burden-sharing, the United States has been pillorying European allies about defense spending and the continent’s collective inability to deliver military effects. It should hardly be surprising, therefore, that many policymakers—particularly in Washington—are convinced that NATO allies are free-riding on U.S. military largesse. Yet a recent study I co-authored for the Center for Strategic and International Studies found that at least 25 NATO allies are spending more than 3 percent of their GDPs on programs that have utility for national security programs. In other words, allies are shouldering collective security responsibility. It’s a good news story and highlights that NATO has a lot to offer.

Be authentic. Many conversations about NATO are inherently technical: what work the allies are doing on a particular issue or who has spent what on military capabilities or advanced technologies. But at the end of the day, alliances are made of people. They are multifaceted pacts among and between citizens and governments to build a better world. Ultimately the alliance must be about, and focus on, the people it serves and the people who work for and serve the alliance.

Ultimately, NATO’s duration and continued relevance is not a foregone conclusion. Perhaps it never was. So if NATO is to make it to 150 years, new generations need to come to their own understanding of why the alliance is—and will remain—a useful national security partnership. And in this, what matters is the journey, the process of the discourse, and the process of continual, open engagement. The process is, in many ways, the product because it is how a renewed understanding of the values and strengths of the alliance gets rooted in our democracies—and will make NATO the partner of choice for global security leadership for decades to come.

I'm sure smarter people have had better takes on Solas's lack of supporters in Veilguard, but since I need this to make sense, I'm developing my own headcanon:

My take is that Solas made the conscience choice to distance himself from his spy network slowly, over time, until he was effectively working alone when Varric & co catch up to him.

He used all those elves in order to keep tabs on how close the Inquisition was, and to subtly redirect them when needed. When the Inquisition gradually became just Varric and Harding and a handful of their old friends, it became easier to keep tabs on them from afar. He kept the bulk of his spies distracted with busy work, or sent them back to their lives, to be his eyes and ears if he called up on them - but other than as occasional informants, most of his people were not active spies.

His agents were a useful tool, but he didn't let himself get close to any of them. He's learned; he won't allow anyone to get as close to him as the members of the Inquisition did. And, just as key, he won't allow himself to get attached.

I can see him being quite distant with his spies. They know very little about him. He makes himself out to be mysterious and unknowable, arriving at night without warning, speaking in riddle.

As elven slaves flee the Imperium, following rumors of some sort of uprising, of a powerful elven mage fighting for a return of elven glory - elven servants leave their posts in crowded cities and Dalish clans follow herds of halla drawn mysteriously north - Solas has his pick of pawns.

But he can't risk his plans by recklessly recruiting every elf who seeks him out. He can afford to be picky. Dalish clans wake to find two or three of their number disappeared in the night with naught but a hasty note. Elven servants show up on doorsteps of nobles all over the south, glowing letters of recommendation in hand. Elven slaves become more and more unpopular in Tevinter, as they've started to disappear from their beds, no matter how strong the magical wards and blood magic that holds them. No one wants to risk losing their money, or their heads, as the populace whispers of another slave rebellion must be imnenet. Templars search fruitlessly for whoever is stealing slaves, but come up empty time and again, and soon even those efforts are abandoned with Magister Pavus's political pressure.

Solas uses his spies just as he used the legions of spirits and elvhen agents in his war against the Evanuris. But this time he keeps them splintered and isolated, in small strategically placed sects, so they can't organize against him. They use codenames, and he reassigns them regularly, so no one gets too friendly. He appears to them in different disguises. He ensures that his movements can't be traced nor his motives pinned down. He doesn't appoint any of them to positions of power or influence over the others, but tells each of them that their work is of utmost importance, and discards anyone who is no longer useful by making it look like a kindness. He takes no one into his confidence. He keeps his own counsel, always.

He's learned his lesson.

The elves he recruits aren't told the full truth. They may think they're working for elven glory, but how many suspicious Dalish would truly, fully trust the Dread Wolf?

He cannot risk his network knowing enough about him to betray him. If they are captured and interrogated, or compelled by blood magic, none can know how to find him.

And none can know how many of them will die when he brings down the Veil.

The closer Solas gets to his goal, the more he pulls away from his spies. Slowly, they get sent through eluvians on missions to distant parts of Thedas, only to return to find their eluvian inactivated. Stranded, their god deaf to their pleas for help.

To others, he simply stops appearing. They presume their leader dead or captured when messages stop arriving with orders. Some are told simply to act normal, go about your lives, wait for a signal that will never come. Some lose faith and return to their old lives, just another failed attempt for elves to regain their status.

A little bit at a time, he abandons them all. He tells himself they are safely kept far away, to spare them the worst of the destruction, but this, too, was calculated.

Solas will not risk betrayal within his own ranks. He will not allow anyone to do to him what he did to the Inquisitor.
