STEPHENSON BLAKE
Today we're showing a new acquisition from one of the giants of British type founding, Specimens of Printing Types from Stephenson, Blake, the Caslon Letter Foundry, Sheffield, published in Sheffield, England by Stephenson Blake & Co. in 1959. Stephenson Blake claims a lineage directly back to William Caxton, the founder of English type and printing in 1476. We think they stand on firmer ground, however, in also claiming descent from William Caslon, the founder of the first truly British typefaces beginning in 1734.
Silversmith and mechanic William Garnett and toolmaker John Stephenson began foundry operations in 1818 with financial support from James Blake. A year later, they acquired the firm of William Caslon III and IV, an offshoot of the Caslon family business. Garnett left the firm in 1829 and the company was renamed Blake & Stephenson in 1830, but Blake died soon after. Stephenson himself died in 1864 and passed the business onto his son Henry. The company was purchased in 1905 Sir Charles Reed and Sons, but the Stephenson name was retained. In 1937, the company purchased H.W. Caslon & Sons, the other branch of the storied Caslon dynasty, securing its right to claim full Caslon heritage.
Stephenson Blake continued to make some type until 2001, but it finally closed its foundry in 2005, with much of its historical stock going to the Type Archive in London. Because of financial issues, the Type Archive also had to close its doors in 2022, and the Stephenson Blake collection was transferred to the Victoria & Albert Museum as the interim custodian.
Shown here are some shaded typefaces and ornaments from the 1959 catalog.

Poetry in the Pulse of Neon: The Role of Verse in Cyberpunk Media
Racing through the realm of digital entertainment, poetry might seem like an unanticipated passenger aboard the high-speed, neon-lit trains of cyberpunk. Yet, in this clashing world, the true allure comes alive. While Raz has already delved into the connection between poetry and video games, this piece dives into the sprawling, electrified streets of cyberpunk media.
Poetry Amidst the Techno-Chaos Cyberpunk, known for its grungy cityscapes, bleeding-edge tech, and rebellious undercurrents, surprisingly, pulses with a human beat. This genre, teeming with futuristic anomalies, brings poetry into its fold, presenting an emotional counterpoint to the mechanical heartbeats. Think of William Gibson's "Neuromancer", where the prose itself often takes on a poetic rhythm, illustrating the dance between man, machine, and soul.
The Resonance of Rhyme in Rebellion Rebellion is a core theme in cyberpunk—whether it's battling authoritarian overlords, defying mega-corporations, or challenging one's own augmented reality. Poetry, a time-honored voice of dissent, naturally finds its niche here. Recall the cryptic poems in Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner," derived from William Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Experience", they set the tone for the film's exploration of humanity and artificial life.
Emotional Catharsis in the Digital Age Digging deep into the psyche of cyberpunk reveals a contemplation on identity, morality, and the essence of humanity. Amidst the techno-jargon and virtual vistas, it's the emotional crux that anchors the tales. The poetic soliloquies of the protagonist in Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash" offer moments of introspection, bringing to light the character's internal battles amidst external chaos.
An Unlikely Pair The merging of poetry and cyberpunk seems incongruous at first glance. While poetry evokes a sense of timeless emotion, cyberpunk thrusts us into a potentially dystopian tech-fueled reality. However, their combined power is undeniable. For instance, in Richard K. Morgan's "Altered Carbon", poetic reflections interspersed within the narrative amplify the story's exploration of life, death, and what it truly means to be human.
Conclusion As cyberpunk's digital universe flickers with neon and buzzes with electric life, the soft echoes of poetic verse offer a grounding touch. Far from mere ornamentation, poetry in cyberpunk serves as a bridge, connecting the vast digital expanse with the enduring human soul. In a world increasingly interfaced with tech, perhaps it's the poetic word that keeps our human essence alive and pulsating.

OK, now that the Outlast Trials got a full release, I’m updating my list of “repeated themes in the series” to be my predictions for when Outlast 3 comes out:
Shawn Baichoo returns as the (a?) player character.
More recurring actors (i.e. Marcel Jeannin, Chimwemwe Miller, Andreas Apergis, Carlo Mestroni, Karl Graboshas, Edward Yankie).
This is something I noticed with a lot of the actors, but a huge chunk of them were also in the TV show Real Detective, and Andreas Apergis and Tyrone Benskin were also in the same season of Channel Zero. And Lucinda Davis was in the shitty anime spinoff of Supernatural. This kinda reminds me of the old joke about the BBC having like ten actors, five sets, and three props, except it’s Canada.
Based on the above, my first two guesses for new cast members are Tahmoh Penikett and Marina Stephenson Kerr.
One of the characters does a weirdly sexual licking of the player character’s face.
One of the characters does some gross sexual shit (whether it’s offscreen assault like Knoth and Loutermilch, whatever Val did to Blake during their first meeting on top of the lick, or weird surgeries like Gluskin).
Someone gets crucified.
If we’re returning to the old formula of using a video camera, that gets lost for a while.
Prequel comics.
At least one cult. IDK if it’d worship whatever the Walrider became after the events of the first set of comics, or if it’d be your usual religious cult like in Outlast 2 or what.
At least one fucked up elevator like the dumbwaiter that led to Trager or the one in the lobby of Mount Massive or the one that led to the mines. (Based on two of these, bonus points if the elevator leads to the endgame level.)
The player character gets dropped into a pile of dead bodies (or severed limbs).
The floor has to collapse under the player character.
One of three outcomes for the player character: Final Girl Syndrome like Waylon, Tragic Yet Kinda Ambiguous Death like Miles and maybe the Trials reagents, or Still in Murkoff’s Clutches like Blake.
Shitty weather in an outdoor courtyard fucks with the night vision like the exercise yards at Mount Massive or the school roof in the second game.
Traumatic hand injuries like Miles losing fingers or Blake getting crucified or the apple and Futterman jump scare in the Trials tutorial.
A pitch black area where you have to trudge through water like the one section of sewers in the first game or the part where you have to listen for Jessica before ending up in the school’s pool in the second game.
Hanging bodies in a gym (Gluskin’s victims in the gym in Whistleblower, a fuckton of Jessicas in Outlast 2, and the mannequins (and a couple snitches) in the police station trials).
Having to turn on a generator, turn off something electrical, or turn some big valve on or off. While being chased by enemies on the way. Preferably in a waterlogged area.
Someone’s naked.
Whatever it was JT Petty said in the one anniversary Q&A video on YouTube about including at least one genitalia mutilation in every game (i.e. a number of player character deaths - Marta in the second game and Coyle in Trials come to mind first, plus Gluskin’s whole thing in Whistleblower, plus the chapel bit in the orphanage trial).

An Eccentric Bibliophile's (Yet Incomplete) Guide to Dark Academia Reading, Because Who Needs Sunlight Anyway?
Lo and behold, the inevitable moment has arrived. You find yourself engrossed in Donna Tartt's 'The Secret History' for the umpteenth occasion (it never loses its luster, does it?), and you've diligently explored the whole dark academia canon. Or have you really? I've made this post to collect the lesser-known tomes (because, you see, I'm well-acquainted with the exquisite agony of the quest). So, without further ado, let the revelry commence! Disclaimer: the current version of the list has the links that lead to Goodreads. Also, the current version of the list seriously lacks books written by non-white authors. I hope that we'll collectively gain a cultural momentum and make this list better in this sense. I, personally, would love a recommendation!
Dark Academia Canon
Tumblr media
Photo by Giammarco Boscaro on Unsplash
The volumes that are often bestowed with the dubious honor of canonical status, or, simply put, the ones that are most recommended dark academia reads.
The Secret History by Donna Tartt
If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio
Babel by R.F. Kuang
Bunny by Mona Awad
The Atlas by Olivie Blake
Alex Stern series by Leigh Bardugo
Lesser-Known Dark Academia Titles
Tumblr media
Photo by Jez Timms on Unsplash
Intellect reigns supreme, arts and philosophy hold us captive, and we can't forget our undying affection for those delightfully lifeless languages. Oh, and let's not overlook the timeless charm of tweed. Simply put, less known but not less great titles that have all the canonical elements of dark academia. I've also added a few words about those that I love most.
The Flanders Panel by Arturo Perez-Reverte: a 15th-century painting has the key to a Renaissance murder, and the question Quis Necavit Equitem is answered by a modern-day art expert
Cornish Trilogy by Robertson Davies: a defrocked monk, some scholars of a university lovingly called "Spook" and a girl named Maria Magdalena Theotoky try to find out what to do with the vast estate of the recently deceased millionaire and art collector Francis Cornish
Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas: a selective admission process gets Ines in an experimental liberal arts school called Catherine House. The alumni of this school became, at their own time, prize-winning authors, artists, inventors, Supreme Court justices and even presidents. But how exactly did that happen?
The Rule of Four by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason
A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee: no such thing as witchcraft exists in the world. That's probably not the case for Felicity, who is still trying to find out who killed five Dalloway students (supposedly, witches). Enter Ellis Haley, a young prodigy and a literary darling, who writes books about murders by re-enacting said murders...
Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson
Wilder Girls by Rory Power
Hex by Rebecca Dinerstein Knight
These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever
Ghosts of Harvard by Francesca Serritella
The Cloisters by Katy Hays
In These Hallowed Halls: A Dark Academia Anthology
The Maidens by Alex Michaelides
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
Dark Academia Vibes
Tumblr media
Photo by Darran Shen on Unsplash
These books might as well be the quintessential dark academia reads, but the only element that isn't bedecked in romanticism is higher education itself. Murders continue to unfold in the most peculiar manner, occult knowledge flourishes, and suddenly, the folks with a smidge of Latin under their belts are the life of the scholarly soirée. Simply put, a book that a dark academic might read and love if they are not that fond of remembering their own school days.
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
The Magus by John Fowles
Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
Foucault’s Pendulum by Umberto Eco
The Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson
All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness
All's Well by Mona Awad
Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez
Hare House by Sally Hinchcliffe
Tripping Arcadia by Kit Mayquist
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
Ghost Wood Song by Erica Waters
The River Has Teeth by Erica Waters
The Last Heir to Blackwood Library by Hester Fox
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Metropolitan Stories by Christine Coulson
Piranesi by Susanne Clarke
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanne Clarke
The Laundry Files series by Charles Stross
Alchemical Journeys series by Seanan McGuire
The Cadfael Chronicles by Ellis Peters
Dublin Murder Squad series by Tana French
Please, by all means, feel at liberty to append additional entries to the inventory - or, simply put, feel free to add to this list.

Doctor Who at EasterCon
There were a couple of good panels on aspects of Doctor Who over the weekend. On Saturday, Doctor Who and the Industrial Revolution started off with the Seventh Doctor and the Rani with George Stephenson, and then ranged widely around other stories, even including the oppressed workforce of the Sunmakers.
On Sunday, I had my UNIT uniform on, and I really enjoyed the panel on Doctor Who in Audio. There was a late addition to the panel for this, who turned out to be one of the script writiers for Big Finish. Andy Lane has written for the Third Doctor, Seventh Doctor, several Jago and Litefoot spin-offs, and some Blake's Seven.
He had a couple of anecdotes about writing dialogue for the Doctors - in particular, avoiding the letter 'r' for Sylvester McCoy, who rrrrolls them with rrrrelish - and then there was the Third Doctor, now ably played by Tim Treloar. Jon Pertwee had a slight lisp, and Andy Lane had written a story involving giant eels, and the line: "Release the eels!"
Now, recording for Big Finish takes place with the actors each in small glass booths, with headphones on, and when Tim Treloar said "Releath the eelth!" Katy Manning laughed so much she slid down the glass to the bottom of the booth! Apparently it is still possible to set her off laughing with that line.
Nicholas Whyte, meanwhile, was very complimentary about the soundscape of the Fifth Doctor story The Emerald Tiger, and when the panel was asked about favourite music, one of the answers was the Sixth Doctor story where they break into Gilbert and Sullivan song! (that's Doctor Who and the Pirates)
