Headcanon about Jason’s and Alfred’s birthday that is five days late BUT:

From any batkid’s perspective other than Dick and Jason’s, it’s just a known fact that Alfred does not celebrate his birthday. No one even knows when it is.

They’ve tried asking him. He won’t budge. It doesn’t help that none of them even know his correct age so they can’t go off of that either.

“Why won’t you let us celebrate your birthday, Alfred?” Steph asked one day while everyone else was around.

“There’s no reason for me to celebrate anymore. I’ve had enough birthdays.”

Not even Bruce will budge on the matter.

Then, long after Jason comes back. Only once he finally reconnects with his family, does anything happen.

Tim walks into the kitchen one day and sees Alfred and Jason at the counter, bowls around them. “What are you two doing?”

“Baking a cake,” Alfred responded. Tim could see the chocolate flavouring from here.

“Can I help?” Cass spoke up from behind Tim.

Jason turned, a stern, cold glare on his face, “No.”

Alfred reached up and tugged on Jason’s ear for a moment before continuing to stir, turning to face the other kids, “It’s a tradition. Best to keep to it.”

That night, they all sat at the dinner table. Alfred set down the cake in front of Jason, who sat at the head of the table with everyone around him.

Damian was the first to notice the writing, “What is this?”

Everyone leaned a little closer. Surrounded by burning candles, in neatly scrawled white icing in cursive font read, “Happy Birthday Jason!"

Then below it, in thick, sloppy, capital letters, read "+ ALFRED"

Everyone’s confused except Dick and Bruce.

“Why is Alfred’s name on the cake?”

“Because it’s his birthday, too? I don’t see what the big fuss is.”

After everything is explained and cake is handed out, there comes to be a mutual, unspoken understanding.

Alfred had lost his reason to celebrate his birthday. Now, after all these years, he had it back.

the batkids will deliberately get jason into their favorite pieces of media so he’ll write fanfiction for it.

dick discovered this strategy when he forced jason to watch one of his favorite shows with him. he’d totally forgotten that the show ended on a cliffhanger before it was cancelled, but rewatching it brought back that feeling of dissatisfaction he had the first time around. so dick opens up the ao3 tag for the show and to his surprise, there’s a brand new fic addressing every single loose end, complete with beautiful prose and amazing characterization. dick practically weeps. it’s only when he realizes some of the things in the fic match up with the rants jason had during their watch of the show that he has barbara confirm his suspicions about who the author is.

somehow everybody but jason gets wind of this and they’re taking unashamed advantage of it. the next time they see a movie together, stephanie leans over to jason to whisper about the romantic potential between two characters. she gets like three fics for her ship out of that. when jason goes outside, barbara switches electronic billboards and redirects taxis with ads for her favorite show. and of course, every targeted ad on his phone and computer are for the same show. when he finally gives in and watches it, barbara ends up with plenty of content to get her through the between seasons break.

everybody in jason’s family is subscribed to the ao3 account that he doesn’t know they know he has. one day, they’re all chilling in the library, and at the same time jason publishes his latest fic (for a movie bruce of all people was very insistent he watch), everybody’s email notifications go off. he narrows his eyes suspiciously. “just some wayne enterprises stuff.” “got a package delivered.” “what’s an email?”

it’s fine. he’ll let them get away with it. besides, he does the same thing to damian to get fanart out of him.

“And how, exactly, did you all make it back here?” Bruce asks his children (children, not even all of them according to the Robins—Robins, that’s another thing that Bruce is going to blame his oncoming headache on. What were any of his future selves thinking?)

“A blood ritual,” Dick answers confidently.

“Alien cube,” Jason says at the same time, shrugging.

“Techno-magical chemical reaction,” Timothy says, raising his voice to be heard over the others.

“Iseki bullshit,” Stephanie & Damian say in perfect unison (as though that’s supposed to explain anything,) before turning to stare at eachother—also in perfect unison—with identical looks of shock. 

(Damian’s face splits into a wide smile as he holds out one hand. Stephanie glances at it, her lips pressed into a thin line, before passing Damian a quick low-five. They both flip their hands back up in fists to rap their knuckles against eachother.

“Hell yeah,” Damian whispers, his smile somehow even brighter than before. Stephanie’s mouth twitches and she gives Damian another tap.)

“…Of course,” Bruce says in the flat tone that only Dick should know means Bruce is utterly lost & out of his depth, but which has five mischievous sets of eyes sparkling at him.

there is not enough femslash in batcest circles. the girls deserve to be just as weird about each other as the boys are. if BruDick gets to be weird father/son/brothers/lovers/friends/rivals/soulmates then it is only fair that Babs/Cass get to be mother/daughter/sisters/lovers too. Something about that deep intrinsic but undefinable love that is born out of trauma, especially if you consider Cass not knowing what healthy love looks like in the first place. i think it's fun and deserves just as much fandom content.

besides that, you can get even more niche with rarepairs like Helena/Steph. Huntress/Spoiler: Blunt Trauma is already a fantastic comic and even though it's their only real canon interaction it has so much potential. very comparable to TimJay in how Helena tries to get Steph to understand her morals and the corruption you could play with it.

that comic also highlights on how both Steph and Helena are outcasts of the Batfamily and don't have the approval of Bruce to be doing what they do in "his city". I think there's so much Potential in Helena taking Steph under her wing because Bruce won't let her in and it becomes a weird codependent toxic sapphic mess. I think the protectiveness Helena feels over Steph from the get-go is so clear and the way she wants to look out for Steph, wants to make sure Steph understands the real world? I love them. Helena should be allowed to steal Steph, actually. I think it'd be fun.

there are a lot of other possibilities too like Babs/Steph or even getting weird with Helena Bertinelli/Helena Wayne and the existential question of "is it selfcest or not." But these two specifically live in my head rent-free, especially Helena/Steph and one day I'll convince everyone else to ship it too.

i saw a handwriting post that i cant find now but they left people out so heres a few more!:

bruce: batman and bruce have completely different handwriting styles, hell matches malone has a different writing style. bruce is the mfer that hearts his i's, handwriting so round and fun that it should be exclusively written in sparkly pink pen, batman is spiky and sharp that is more chicken scratch than anything (its really hard to write in the gloves okay leave him alone)

steph: okay and hear me out with this one, all caps and all of the letters are exactly the same height, like people have told her that her handwriting is "serial killer esq" before and she almost punched that person, like bruce she has a separate handwriting for in costume and its how people expect her to write, purple ink with super curly w's and all (she does this For the Bit)

duke: duke doesn't print, like... ever, he probably Has a print handwriting but no ones' ever seen it, duke exclusively writes in cursive like the old man teenager he is, his handwriting is absolutely unreadable unless you're used to reading cursive i.e. alfred is the only person who can actually read it lmao, duke also at some point probably gets his hands on like a UV ink pen, something he can read no problem but other people need tools to read

babs: you know that girl (this person was almost always a girl lets be real) who had just the most pinterest perfect handwriting you suddenly knew you were very different genres of people? yeah and even when she's rushing it still comes out print perfect

alfred: similar to duke script writing Only, his is more readable that duke's to someone who isn't used to cursive but the fact that he only writes with a fountain pen does make it a little challenging.

Duke Thomas would like to know which god or goddess he had pissed off to warrant the current situation. After his mother and stepfather were attacked by the Joker, and the whole We Are Robin event, Bruce became his legal guardian/adoptive father. Problem is that he isn't entirely without family, quite the contrary, he has too many family members.

Duke Thomas is a demigod.

Son of Apollo.

One of the few children of Apollo that had survived both The Battle of the Labyrinth and The Battle of Manhattan. Events that are known to have made the Apollo children almost extinct. He also happens to have the rare minor ability to control shadows thanks to being conceived during a solar eclipse. Though being a demigod brought a lot of problems like the one he has right now.

He usually goes to Camp Halfblood for the summer to be with his other side of the family. His mortal parents would make it a trip, go to the beach, visit museums, parks and eventually they would drop him off at camp. It helps that Gotham disguises his scent long enough that monsters don't bother him on his way to camp.

Problem was they weren't there this time. Instead he was with a mortal family that happens to be the best detectives in the world and don't know the concept of privacy even if it hit them in the face. They would probably hit it back if that happened.

Of course Duke had to forget about it and only remember a week before that he hasn't told his adoptive family about any of this. Worst part is that he remembered after having done a double patrol, done finals exams and haven't slept for more than 5 minutes in the last 48 hours. This unfortunately led to him making a terrible choice that at the moment sounded like a great idea. That should have been his warning.

Duke in his panic decided to contact camp but couldn't find a drachma. After tearing his room looking for one he remembered that he lives with rich people now. And rich people has expensive wines. Duke has access to the best offering for a certain God.

After sneaking around and taking some extremely expensive wine in the dead of night he makes his offering, explains the situation and prays for help.

Soon he wakes up from the floor to see the wine is gone and before he can process the thought one of his siblings is talking/screaming while dragging him to one of the living rooms. He doesn't understand anything there saying with how fast they are talking but once he gets inside the room he understands what all the fuss is about.

In front of him is Dionysus talking with Bruce Wayne while drinking diet coke.

"Well if it isn't my nephew. Took you long enough to get here. Aren't you supposed to be a morning person?"

From the Personal Notes of Mr. Bruce Wayne:

00.01 - Ability to manipulate gravitational fields allows for advanced gymnastic and combat capabilities. A strong leader, the others look up to him. Loyal to a fault, but needs to be watched carefully. Will choose the other children over himself or me.

00.02 - Determined, focused, strong willed. Has learned to use her ability to analyze the surroundings and formulate a plan prior to attack. Unfortunately lacks any leadership qualities and fails to communicate these plans to the team, preferring to act alone. Still has much to learn, but is eager to do so. My favorite.

00.03 - Adequate marksmanship and proficiency with ranged weapons. Can hold his own in a fight but relies to heavily on his powers. Insolent, can not take instruction or direction. His recklessness will be his undoing.

00.04 - Development of photokinesis is hindered by his unwillingness to fully commit to manipulating shadows as well as light. Charming and a neutral leader. Should Number 1 ever fail, he would be the best choice to replace him.

00.05 - Connection to animals has yet to prove useful. Fighting skills and determination on par with Number 2, but is unpredictable at best. Refuses to admit when he doesn’t know something. Has no respect for anyone but himself.

00.06 - Still fails to reach the full potential of psychometry abilities. Refuses to accept the possibility that he may be able to see into the future as well as the past. Useful for research and not much else.

00.07 - No clear talents. Some enthusiasm for puzzles and mediocre problem solving abilities. To headstrong. Irritating.

i was logged out for a week and life was so peaceful. i read books by and about women. and when i read comics, i only read comics that prominently featured women. and they were fun!

then i logged back in and ventured beyond my peer reviewed 'i swear on my life that this has women in it who matter to the plot' bubble and. well. can you guess what i found. or rather. who i didnt find. can you guess

parts of my music taste that i think the main npmd kids would like:

grace: i love her but she wouldn't fuck with any of my playlists. maybe bits of my pop stuff and the classical music playlist i use during homework or rushing for deadlines but even then she would probably ask me to remove the tango de roxanne instrumental from it. (kinda giving closeted madds buckley listener. i think i would play her a song and she would discreetly write down most of the lyrics to search it up later but then immediately go "oooh no, this is bad, this is very bad." when she's 7 songs deep into my love is sick)

richie: my boy would fuck with shwabadi and fabvl HEAVY. maybe more fabvl but yeah. would listen to their aot stuff and then go in a rabbit hole for more. maybe a bit of halacg and rustage?? definitely a random encounters guy at least. i just feel like he would be the type of guy to listen to nerdcore, whether it's rap or pure singing.

ruth: oh me and her are skipping in a field. musicals (heathers, in the heights, hadestown, epic)? check. gay and horny (chrissy chlapecka, snow wife, 6arely human)? check. dramatic ballads/songs where you have to be lip-SCREAMING or on your knees to be accurate to the emotions (y se fuera ella by jonghyun, tango de roxanne, heaven on their minds)? check.

steph: honey revenge for sure (girl would love airhead), florence and the machine, madds buckley, and hannah bahng. i don't listen to a lot of songs from sycamour but the few i do i feel like could rock with steph. maybe some of chase atlantic but probably their older stuff like their paradise ep and such. (projecting my love of falling onto her. a whole song about being tragically reckless with someone you like, basically saying fuck you to your dad, and calling the love conflict instead of just admitting what it is?? that sounds like steph)

pete: i dunno. i love him but like... taste in music is hard for me to get out of him. he'd probably be near my side where my brother's taste leaks over: more party edm but also nice rhythmic and indie stuff comes through. probably got dragged into richie's nerdcore stuff a bit. do feel like he would be the type of kid to take over their brother's music taste though so i guess it fits... hmmm.... old 90s to early 2000s hits would shoot out and surprise you if he's given the aux, in this universe of taste ig

max: he would claim to not like anything because im clearly a freaky nerdy prude and there's no way we could have anything in common (white girl pop/2010s recession pop. i feel it in my veins. bro would dig through my nostalgia playlist like a fiend. daddy issues is prominent in this man and the 2010s. also a closeted madds buckley listener. saved driver's seat but won't admit it)

part 2 of my npmd fantasy high au! find part 1 -> here

this is mainly rambling about stuff and expanding on some ideas. once again it gets very long!

main themes/major arc

kinda the big theme is discovering the sources of their abilities and in a way they learn more about themselves. steph learns that webby is the divinity that gifted her her sorcerer powers, grace learns that blinky was the god she was worshipping the whole time unknowingly, max learns that wiggly was the source offering him strength, pete learns that tinky was the one gifting him his time manipulation powers, ruth learns more about the spirits that strengthen her bardic magic, and richie learns the root of his druidic powers and how to embrace them.

it then becomes more about learning these discoveries and either finding something that aligns more with the real you or leaning into the skid and embracing your powers, making them your own.

grace, max, and pete are the former. grace changes divinities to align with the tempest domain. max either changes barbarian subclasses or becomes an oath of redemption paladin to webby or someone. (i’m leaning towards paladin bc i love paladins and barbarians aren’t my fav and it fits him in my mind) then pete will either multiclass or switch completely to artificer. (max and pete’s stuff would happen in like sophomore year, but the seeds would be planted at the end of this main story)

steph, ruth, and richie are the latter. they will all embrace what they have instead of being a little scared of it or at the very least wary. it’s diverging away from expectations placed on them by their parents, teachers, and peers. it’s about taking back control and using their abilities to best suit them instead of anyone else. steph doesn’t have to be the sorcerer her father was pushing her to be, ruth doesn’t have to follow her half orc family’s desires or be what is often typical for most bards, and richie can embrace this natural side of him and still bring himself into it. those two sides aren’t separate, but one.

like i mentioned above, i’ve decided to go with druid for richie instead of rogue. i was so worried about making this party even with melee classes and spellcasters, but who cares if it’s uneven, this party won’t be in any actual play. (tho having so many spellcasters with a single barbarian makes me nervous, like that would be rough. there are a lot of healers but still only one tank) and i’m sticking with air genasi because it doesn’t feel wrong and i have no idea otherwise.

the overarching arc of their freshman year is the mystery of the cult of the starry children. the whole point is about bringing to light that they exist and are basically controlling the whole town. i sincerely doubt they could discover them and then wipe them out completely in one school year, which means it would probably stretch multiple years (which just means that this will probably be a big ass series if i ever actually commit to it) the ending point of their freshman year is bringing the cult to hatchetfield’s attention and shutting down their main operation. also dismantling the five churches that worship the lords. they stop some members, but many of the high ranking members are going to scatter with intentions to rise again (solomon and max's dad, to name a few)

the final battle will take place at the ritual site or whatever somewhere in the witchwood with steph ultimately denying to make a choice and embracing webby as her divinity. with all six of them cutting their own individual ties to the cult. this already looks so cool in my head, it’s just hard to describe currently.

like stated above, all of them have a tie in that they discover mostly by themselves and then they eventually bring all their pieces together to finish the puzzle of the cult.

steph obviously is the kid from the prophecy, has webby’s powers flowing through her, and her dad is a high ranking member. the cult is also the reason her mom is gone

grace is connected to blinky because she is unknowingly worshipping him and that’s the dark magic she was exposed to that morphed her into a fallen aasimar.

pete is connected to tinky because he for some reason has an interest in his family and lent him rare abilities and is the thing that snatched ted away.

max is connected to wiggly because that’s his dad’s divinity and he had to follow in his footsteps. so kinda like grace where he doesn’t know he’s devoted to wiggly, but his strength more comes from the devotion to his dad. mom also gone bc of cult

ruth is connected to pokey because i’m going to have him infiltrating the bard kids. feeding them power through his control which initially making ruth feel even more behind before she starts uncovering that. there is a pull to also join into pokey’s hive, which she stays firm on resisting.

richie is connected to nibbly because i think nibbly would be infiltrating the druid and ranger kids and have connections to the witchwood. (man i don’t really know yet) it may be something he stumbles across in an outdoor class and that’s the first battle the party has together as a full group.

and for more on richie: paul looks after him, who is human and so very normal. richie has never really felt that much of a connection with nature as a whole and struggles with his summons. (Circle of the Shepherd Druid) (which one of you suggested so thank you!!) he, much like ruth, is also gaining the confidence to use his abilities and the spirits he can summon, as part of his subclass, will probably eventually be anime characters or something.

i really really want to make their party name “the nerdy prudes” it wouldn’t be intentional or anything, but after they are told they have to be in a party, one of them will say something sarcastic about being a bunch of nerdy prudes because 4/6 are. which prompts the principal to jot that down as their official name and then disappear so they’re stuck with it

other story elements (random bits of lore)

in regards to the cult, solomon lauter is a member, max’s dad is a member, but grace’s parents are not, they are also being manipulated by blinky.

the story would start with a vignette of all of them before they go to their first day, as how it goes for d20 shows, where they each get their own introduction. when they arrive at school, throughout the day they all do something, intentional or otherwise, to end up in detention. which prompts them to miss out on the designated time to create a party which means they are all stuck together.

no one is thrilled about this group, besides steph who is very amused that she’s in the shitty, detention group, something her dad will not be happy about but there’s nothing he can do to change it. they don’t all hang out immediately, it takes a bit. the nerds would reluctantly cling together first and then the rest follow suit after their first fight together.

since this story is in a different medium than the show i’m basing this on, there is no immediate battle in the cafeteria because battles will take much less time written out and i’m not on a schedule where i have to tell the story within like 20 episodes that require a battle every other episode. i get time to build it all up.

another way the lords are trying to gain more control is by infiltrating the different classes. they all have a hand in the cleric and paladins students. pokey is effecting the bard kids, wiggly is in the barbarian kids, bubbly has both the druid and ranger kids, they all probably are also effecting the warlock kids. all in all, they have a lot of control and that control is something all the nerdy prudes must resist.

i’m considering adding some max/pete because i like that barbarian wizard dynamic and it’s honestly a ship i kinda want to explore. there are already some story beats that would go quite well with it. but things are still up in the air and they would be a bigger slow burn than lautity and also secondary to them.

there are a few unintentional things that involve their classes that ended up suiting the character shockingly well. like ruth is a college of spirits bars and their main gimmick is bestowing a completely random effect which ties into her lack of confidence pretty well. for grace, i don’t really want to go the avenue of where she changes from a fallen aasimar to another type of aasimar (like my girl Yasha from the Mighty Nein) because, again, this story is about embracing who you are and grace accepting who she is fits better for me. but, in the tempest domain (which she will switch to towards the end of their freshman year) when she reaches level 17, she gain a flying speed. so by embracing a new divinity that better suits her, she’ll be able to do something that was stripped from her by the blinky faith! it’s crazy how some things just line up unintentionally!

i’m giving steph bangs, much like the ones she had in abstinence camp

they are starting at level 1 and go up to level 5 by the end, but i may give some of them their subclass abilities earlier on because that seems to make more sense to me. like grace would be an order domain cleric from the get go, as well as max draws on his rage from wiggly from the get go too.

general world building

this idea is more for a much later plotline, but i still think it's interesting. holloway and wilbur cross are still destined to fight, it hasn’t occurred yet in this world. wilbur will take the kalina (one of the antagonists in fhsy) role as wiggly’s familar/field agent. so he’ll be a tabaxi warlock of the undead, but i’ll probably give him rogue or sorcerer stuff too. he still wears too much denim. miss holloway will still have the same curse and it’s either directly attached to her warlock deal or something outside of it. but she’s an autumn eladrin bc being from the feywilds fits her vibe and she needs her classic red hair. i think she has a tendency to charm other people and that’s something also tied to her fey step (after you use misty step you can automatically charm two creatures) but she never does that on duke. she’s a warlock of the undying (undead vs. undying, do you see the vision), most likely from the lords in black, but she now draws on power from webby, but her deal and curse still holds. the immortality and not being able to tell anyone about her past remain. she works against the lords in black and uses every ounce of her power against them. she is technically one of webby’s followers, tho she is far from devout and only works with her to stop the lords. she doesn’t fully trust webby. so if the lords want to kill webby, miss holloway has to go too which adds more obstacles for them. wilbur cross has the abilities to deal with her and if they got steph to complete the prophecy it would also be easier.

the retro diner will be this world’s version of basrar's where the kids will often gather at but, during the first year, miss holloway has no idea that they’re trying to take down the cult. which would have been helpful.

duke will probably just be a human with no class. there have to be normal people. holloweane still persists nonetheless. i think he’ll be a social worker OR he could have jawbone’s arc and become the guidance counselor. werewolf duke could be interesting. the details are getting hashed out but this sounds compelling.

paulkins is for sure happening in the background. i might make emma a satyr. i don’t think this effects the main story, but it exists somewhere in the background and that's important to me

i’m still having principal jeff blim being the head of the school, but he’ll definitely have rim tim timmy vibes (who i think would get along with arthur aguefort quite well)

other character stuff

since the nerdy prudes are freshman, that means a lot of the younger hf characters would be in high school too. alice, deb, lex, and ethan are juniors. and i believe ziggs would be a senior. all the other high schoolers in npmd are of course also there. football is replaced with blood rush. the nighthawks may stay the mascot, but i do love the owl bears.

ziggs is definitely a stoner druid kid with Circle of Dreams or Spores. lex is a Psi Warrior Fighter, ethan is probably some paladin or maybe rogue idk. alice is most likely a bard and i still need to think for deb.

some of the hf adult characters will be the different teachers. (some of these are kinda tentative) tom is definitely the blood rush coach and i think he’d be the fighter teacher. becky is the cleric teacher (this is entirely bc she’s a nurse) hidgens is the bard teacher (i can’t even imagine how chaotic those classes would be) emma is the ranger teacher (she's for some reason giving ranger). probably miss mulberry is the wizard teacher. still fleshing these out and, again, would love to hear thoughts on what people think a character’s class would be or if they would be a teacher at all

i fully plan to give everyone a class and race, i just need to go through them all and start matching them

that’s some of the stuff i have right now, i might make another post soon about specific scenes i have in mind, but who knows. also i’ve already rolled for their ability scores and made preliminary character sheets for all six of them bc i’m so normal. so very normal...
