Can I just mention that 90s star trek is like, made of this. I mean, it doesn't just have more of it than doctor who, it's actually constructed from it
In the first episode of DS9, the characters are on a space station and a wormhole opens nearby, and they're all "holy shit we have to get over there before the Cardassians take control of it"
The trouble is that it's a partially destroyed space station with only manoeuvring thrusters and it would take them 2 days to get there
But then... Someone has the idea that-
Ok so in star trek you can travel faster than light by generating a warp bubble (using nacelles, those big blue rods that come on the back of the Enterprise and all starfleet vessels), which compresses the space ahead of you so that the distance ahead of you gets smaller
If the space station had nacelles it could get there within seconds. It doesn't have nacelles, but it does have subspace emitters. They're essentially the same thing but much smaller, for data, like video messages and I'm fairly certain the transporters use them too
Anyway, the chief engineer jury rigs it so THEY create a subspace field and the station makes it there within hours.
--
This kind of thing is constant. If you watch 90's trek in order, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, you start to learn that the technobabble actually DOES mean something, and they think a lot about it
The deflector shield is for deflecting microscopic space debris so that it doesn't hit the hull and tear a hole in it (due to the speed they'd be hitting at)
The EPS grid is all the wires that connect everything on the ship so it works
Delta radiation has to do with warp cores
And if you're paying attention, you're rewarded for knowing this stuff... Like a character in Enterprise who worked carelessly with warp cores his whole life and his face is all burnt and warped... Due to delta radiation. They just touch on it in the episode, but if you know what all the technobabble means you'll know anyway
So much is self-consistent. Even the way time travel works, the way languages work, the way Starfleet's command structure works, the way laws and tribunals work, all the procedures, everything, right down to the number of decks each model of ship has.
...
So...
Yeah, sorry I just got really excited about Star Trek there
love it when doctor who characters say some random shit that means nothing. ‘reverse the polarity’ ohohoho hell yeah. ‘your shield density is compromised’ i have no idea what ur talking about but please continue, funky lil sci-fi character

Thinking about if other species becoming insanely obsessed with random parts of human history because it's just so VAST and there's so much. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that other events like the first contact with the Aksani, the Barkonian renaissance, the whole federation-Eminian 'poison saliva dinner' fiasco, or the Lokirrim-Iconian-Risian trading war were all very interesting.
But I can't help but imagine the endless hilarity that involves something like a group of Andorian teens all being like:
"Did you know that there used to be other types of human sub-species living on earth billions and billions of years ago? Yeah! they were called like knee-an-do-thals and erik-toss or something" "Really? So, it was like the human version of Aenar on their planet?" "I guess so yeah" "So, what happened to them?" "The ancient humans killed them all." "..." "..."
"...maybe...on second thought, we should help Anika with her biology project after all."

actually what am I doing I can just ask people on tumblr instead of googling ten million things and getting zero relevant results
So I'm writing a paper for a class about utopias and I'm talking about the ways the view of utopian society/utopian problems have changed in Star Trek over the years as the metatextual societal influences have impacted the writing. I'm trying to find and analyze one episode per series that has to do with the concept of Utopia (or dystopia). I have most of the episodes picked out, but I've never actually seen Voyager or Enterprise (yet, I want to finish DS9 first <3), so I humbly ask the nerds of tumblr for assistance !! If there’s any good episodes from those shows about that concept let me know ! :)

underestimating the power of friendship is the single biggest mistake you can make as a villain in Star Trek. like “your friends will not come for you bro you are cooked. wrap it up, babe.

human things I think Vulcans would be good at:
getting a return processed at Target
COVID compliance
birdwatching, but for like. algae and slugs and stuff. (they’re too advanced for just birds)
dealing with medical negligence
online shopping (they have 2k tabs open at all times)
marketplace bartering (in any locale)
elementary school riddles (green glass door, etc.)
starting underground rainbow loom empires (adult or child, doesn’t matter)
cutthroat pitchfork reviews
letterboxd (rating film by various, limited metrics? they consider it humanity’s greatest contribution in eons; one of the reasons they make first contact)
writing unhinged YouTube comments
patiently discovering, and reviewing, each ending of a choose-your-own-adventure book
you may add your own
